"Mr. Trump’s voters are granted a level of care and coddling that defies credulity and that is afforded to no other voting bloc. Many of them believe the most ludicrous things: babies being aborted after birth and children going to school as one gender and returning home surgically altered as another gender even though these things simply do not happen. Time and again, we hear the wild lies these voters believe and we act as if they are sharing the same reality as ours, as if they are making informed decisions about legitimate issues. We act as if they get to dictate the terms of political engagement on a foundation of fevered mendacity."
"We must refuse to participate in a mass delusion. We must refuse to accept that the ignorance on display is a congenital condition rather than a choice. All of us should refuse to pretend that any of this is normal and that these voters are just woefully misunderstood and that if only the Democrats addressed their economic anxiety, they might vote differently. While they are numerous, that does not make them right."

Help me decide what to read in November. My theme for this month is "non-fiction" (specifically memoirs).
Please reblog for a larger sample size.

I also learned the word dendrochronology- analyzing the patterns of tree rings to know everything that has ever happened to a tree. This is how I love you. I am peeling back my skin, layer by layer, so you will finally know everything inside me.

I think about this often too and have, at different times, grieved the life I could have lived and the person I could have been, and I remember this idea from Roxanne Gay from Rookie podcast in 2017 (note that she is talking about experiencing sexual assault at a young age so it’s not a comparable experience, but the idea still resonates with me as someone who has experienced mental illness for most of their life, and it gives me comfort in those moments of grief):
"Nothing good comes from magical thinking, but I think it’s inevitable. When you look at yourself and consider the ways your life has been shaped by external forces [or mental illness in this case]….. you have to wonder, ‘who would I be if I had grown up in a bubble? You know, like who would I be if I were untainted by life?’ And that’s a really seductive idea, like this idea of a *pristine* me - unharmed, unbowed. But I also tend to think that.. I don’t know if I would have been as interesting. My best friend tells me that all the time. We talk about-you know-I definitely, when I’m talking to her, I do wonder, ‘who would I have been?’ But she thinks I would not have been the ‘me’ that I am. And so, not that it was ~worth it~ but something decent did come out of something terrible.”
every now and then I start reflecting on how much mental illness has fucked up my life and it makes me feel sick, I could have been so much more

The biggest challenge of our lifetime will be figuring out how to combat the American willingness to embrace flagrant misinformation and bigotry.

I embrace the label of bad feminist because I am human. I am messy. I’m not trying to be an example. I am not trying to be perfect. I am not trying to say I have all the answers. I am not trying to say I’m right. I am just trying - trying to support what I believe in, trying to do some good in this world, trying to make some noise with my writing while also being myself.
