Sonic the Hedgehog series reached over 1.6 Billion sales

In a new integrated reported published by SEGA, the Sonic the Hedgehog series has reached a new high of cumulative 1.6 Billion sales and downloads. SEGA of Japan CEO Haruki Satomi also commented on the recent acquisition of Rovio, the developers behind the Angry Birds series, and what he learned with the success of Sonic Frontiers.

Sonic reaches a new landmark

As of current, SEGA has relayed that the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has sold over 1.6 Billion units in regards to its games (worth reminding that these numbers also includes the free to play mobile games), also mentioning how Sonic Frontiers was an important release for the franchise.

Citing Sonic Frontiers as a hit "all over the world", SEGA also expressed that it marks a turning point for Sonic in the 3D space, showcasing how Sonic is one of SEGA's most important brands.

SEGA of Japan CEO Haruki Satomi on current landscape for SEGA

Haruski Satomi, when asked about the current trends in the gaming world, expressed that "there's a growing tendency of users carefully checking out reviews and impressions of games before making any purchase, and those titles that are universally praised can do record sales all over the world." With Satomi mentioning that SEGA's main goal will be to create games that bring new experiences to users and also their attention.

Satomi also commented on what he learned with Sonic Frontiers, saying that "the team did various testings and field learning, and was extremely rigorous on bringing its' quality to the maximum it could be, even if that meant the game being delayed from its' original planned release. As a result, this game has become one of the best of the entire [Sonic] series."

In regards to the recent acquisition of Rovio, developer for the Angry Birds series, Satomi expressed that it meant that SEGA could compete even more in the ever growing mobile gaming market. With Satomi stating that "we feel that it's the perfect partner for us to fill the pieces that are missing that will help our group reach even more growth."
