Quilts
Quilting has a long history that can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The earliest known evidence of quilting is an ivory carving of the Pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty, which dates to around 3400 BC.
A quilt is decorative textile, often used as a bedspread, made by stitching together a top, middle, and bottom layer of fabric.
Quilts are practical and beautiful bed blankets that keep you warm on cold nights. Some Quilts are works of art that can be hung on a wall for display. The Tristan Quilt (14th century), made in Sicily, is one of the earliest surviving examples of a decorative quilt.
But Quilts can also be so much more!
Quilts can be loving memories of someone we lost, of our past, of family and can tell a story.
Quilts can be a tribute to our life's work or military service.
Quilts can be a security blanket and support for a frightened child or the sick.
Quilts can be used on windows or doors as draft stoppers like tapestries of old.
Quilts can be used as tents or forts for children's play time.
Quilts can be beautiful, unique gifts for someone else or yourself.
Quilts can be made into practical garments such as jackets, capes & skirts. (Crusaders in the Medieval Days, wore quilted garments under their armor)
Quilts can be used to recover upholstered furniture like stools & chairs.
Prior to the development of the sewing machine, quilting was always done by hand, sometimes with a long running stitch or by hand tying. Women would get together to hold a "Quilting Bee", a group to help complete the hand stitching of a large quilt. Quilts were traditionally made from cotton and when times were tough people would turn old clothing into quilts.  The original Reuse, Repurpose, and Zero Waste!
In today’s world, some will try to tell you that Quilts should only be made from Top Brand Quilting Cottons but really Quilts can be made from almost any fabric: cotton, polyester, wool, flannel, t-shirts, uniforms, etc.

The Hour Glass
Artist: Evelyn De Morgan (English, 1855-1919)
Date: 1905
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The De Morgan Collection
Description:
Evelyn De Morgan's sister Mrs Stirling wrote the following description in 1924:
In an ancient chair, inlaid with ivory, a woman is seen seated. Behind her on the wall are glowing tapestries; a gold lamp of medieval design is suspended above her head. Her draperies, in wonderful hues of yellow and russet bronze, are thickly sewn with pearls, the delineation of which in correct perspective constituted a tour de force. Jewels of barbaric design accentuate the richness of her attire and gleam again from her quaint head-dress, beneath which shows the first indication of age - her whitening locks. Meanwhile, with a brooding sorrow, her gaze is fixed upon an hourglass, clasped in her slender fingers, wherein the sands are swiftly running out: at her feet is a dying rose.

Etymology of “Virgin Mary” 🌹
By now you’ve probably heard/read that the word “virgin” was not always what it has meant in the English tongue for centuries now. Perhaps you’ve been told that the word meant things like “free” or even a term for “goddess”. But were you also told where those definitions came from? I find most folks just say these things and leave it at that but I’m here and nerd enough to give some historical hints.
First of all, virgin is not a term synonymous with “goddess”. Many Greco-Roman goddesses were given this title when they were not married, retaining their great powers by virtue of this virginity as self sovereignty. Considering how Queer ancient Greece and subsequently Rome was, the contemporary postulations (finally releasing from that suffocating leftover Victorian culture grip) that virgin goddesses, such as the lunar huntress Artemis, were lesbian goddesses isn’t so far out there. This manlessness condition of virginity morphed to meaning unmarried, even among males, in Hellenistic culture such as is in the case of Mary of the Gospels, which were first written in Greek btw. It is only centuries after the contemporary time of the New Testament’s original recording that the term “virgin” was firmly cemented in the context of sexual inexperience in order to attach the idea of spiritual purity to chastity. This is clearly traceable. No need to speculate. Obviously a political move by the Church who gained control of all European monarchies during the medieval period, decimating local indigenous pagan cultures. Still the original Latin root of “virgin”, despite as much as is known about the term applied to Hellenistic deities, is debatable and mysterious. The Latin use likely arose by analogy with “vireo”, meaning "fresh or flourishing", typically in a botanical sense, specifically in the sense of growing WILD and FREE, and not having been tilled and planted agriculturally by man, yet fertile all the same. 🌱🍎
But what about Mary herself?
The etymology of “Mary” is vastly more mysterious than her “virgin” title…
