Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers! Spread the self-love ❤
Palmful of Stars - part of the Recovery Series I've been working on with @firondoiel, @luvvewan, and @happygiraffe. this particular chapter focuses on Obi-Wan gaining back some of his mobility, yet finding it difficult to truly celebrate it when the achievement feels small next to what he was capable of before his injury. this series as a whole is a very special work for us, and I think it shows in every single chapter, but I feel lucky to have written one of the moments where Obi-Wan looks back and has to make some kind of peace with the difference between his past abilities and present. then again, the theme is a pretty universal one, I suppose (if I might be permitted to poke some fun at our aging userbase :') )
Cords of Honour - I'm super glad I told myself not to care about historical accuracy for this one. Cords of Honour walked so Auspicious Match could run, etc.
Taking Root - a hanahaki fic. this one is very sweet and full of yearning.
Care and Feeding of Ancient Manor Houses - look. apparently I'm as weak for the cranky old house as anyone else.
See a Sunrise in the West - though not an sw fic by any stretch, it hits a couple of my absolute beloved-since-childhood tropes, throws in a polyamorous romance, grief, etc.
and one day, when Ambitious Fools is longer than 1 chapter, or when the Navy fic finally gets written, I will add them to this list.
I'm very lucky to be somewhat spoiled for choice, with 100 sw fics 👀
honourable mentions: In the Hollow of Your Hand - short and sweet smut, with a bit of exhibitionism. tbh one of my favourite smutty pieces I've written.
there are a couple of fics I feel like I can't claim as entirely mine, notably Notorious (Hitchcock steal lol) and A New Year's Night. But I have to admit that I do like how New Year's Night turned out.
also I don't think any of these would've existed without Sound the Abyss.

[ask prompts]
🌈 is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?
I don't think anyone would guess that I worked really hard on desperate times, on account of it being deeply shallow filth from start to finish. And, in all fairness, I didn't really work that hard on it (though I did spend several hours trying to get them to shut up and start fucking), but it represents the culmination of three years worth of efforts trying to write a sex scene for them. There are a few reasons I know of that I have so much trouble writing smut for that pairing, and probably way more that I'm not aware of, so being able to write that after MANY abandoned smut wips was a triumph.
what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
I was surprised that To Whom It May Concern— got such a positive response! I think generally most people are much kinder in their interpretations of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon than I am (at least when it comes to my corner of the fandom), and though that fic isn't exactly putting their worst selves on display, they're not exactly pleasant or particularly functional people. I'd guess it got a pass from most readers because they're funny about being terrible (it is a comedy) and the narrative rewards them in the end, but as the author it's clear to me that a lot of misery sits in store for them just because of who they are (though they do eventually get it together).
#one day I WILL write a fic where I get to interrogate how dysfunctional and unhappy I think they are. and all of two people will read it.#but i'll be happy#thanks for asking!#ask game responses#roselightfairy

Posted this one a little while ago, but does an abandoned fic even know time...? (Answer: clearly not.)
The premise of the fic is a what-if? canon-divergence idea where both Gandalf and Aragorn die in Moria, leaving the Fellowship to struggle on without either of their leaders.
And unfortunately, I did not leave any notes for my future-self when I started working on it originally, so every time I've tried to go back to it since my initial burst of work has run into the roadblock of my having no (middle-)earthly idea what was meant to HAPPEN?
I still don't know, but here's the immediate aftermath at least, while the Fellowship tries to pull themselves together in Lórien and figure out how to go on with the Quest without Aragorn or Gandalf there to guide them. We make it as far as the Anduin...
And there we leave them, to sink or swim as chance wills.
@goodintentionswipfest
#if anybody else feels like picking up the threads of this story you have my permission btw#i'm also very much open to having ideas thrown my way#and who knows? maybe after my much-more-divergency celebrimbor-joins-the-fellowship-au that i'm working on now finishes#i'll have more ideas of what the hell to do with this story. we'll see!#at any rate i think even unfinished there's still some bits in here worth reading (and thank you everyone who encouraged me to share it)#(especially you roselightfairy for telling me about this in the first place!)#such as: merry being a practical badass#boromir and gimli and legolas getting some bonding-time#frodo literally stitching-up boromir after he gets wounded#and legolas being his delightful cryptid self and creeping everyone else by being able to recognize the taste of orc-poison in blood#good intentions wipfest#good intentions 2023#my writing#my stuff#lotr fanfiction#lotr au#two fell into shadow au

Do you think that elves heightened senses would be similar to what we now consider sensory issues? For example keen hearing is useful but loud noises must be overwhelming, right? Or odd textures? Has Legolas ever struggled with having to leave a function or being unable to wear something or be somewhere because of heightened senses that cause distress in your universe? Love your work! Keep it up!
"enjoy your repulsive squishy fungus, im gonna go eat some river weed."
Haha truthfully I don't spend very much on practical application of this in elves, but you know who does and who has explored it a bunch? :) @roselightfairy - almost all five senses, I think!
IMO I think it would be all about sounds - like in modverse, a car alarm in the city would be enough to give an elf tinnitus for the rest of the week.

Good Intentions WIPFest 2024
HELLO! Halloween is less than three weeks away, and what could possibly be spookier than abandoned WIPs? Here at Good Intentions WIPFest, we invite you to let your ghosts come out to play!
Good Intentions WIPFest is a celebration for the dead and abandoned, but never unloved. The skeletons in your WIP folder, the vampires that you just couldn't finish lest you be drained dry, the ghosts that haunt you with the promise of what might have been. We believe those fics deserve to see the light of day - even if they are of the kind that can only come out at night - and Good Intentions WIPFest is a space for you to share them.
If you would like to join us in the spooky celebrations, it's very simple! On October 31st, post your unfinished stories or artwork to the Good Intentions AO3 collection. Lift the burden off your shoulders. Free yourself from those fics you are never going to finish. Give them a space in the world to come out to play!
There are only a few main rules:
Use the "Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued" tag on AO3 so that your readers know what to expect.
If you're posting on Tumblr, please mention this blog and/or tag "good intentions wipfest" and "good intentions 2024" so that I can find it to reblog.
No harassing other authors to finish!
Don't beat yourself up about not finishing! This fest is not a challenge to finish anything, it's an opportunity to let go guilt-free.
If you want more details, feel free to read through the FAQ, or to send me an ask here or on my main blog @roselightfairy. And please spread the word far and wide!

(Relevant text below the poll)
Inspired by this post by @roselightfairy and replies by @herrhasen, @enide-s-dear, @unnamedelement, @dragonfirez, and @carlandrea.
If you'd like to refresh your memory of the Fellowship at its bitchiest (and Boromir at his best), the relevant text is below the cut.
Excerpted from The Fellowship of the Ring, Book II, Chapter 3: The Ring Goes South
Gimli looked up and shook his head. 'Caradhras has not forgiven us.' he said. 'He has more snow yet to fling at us, if we go on. The sooner we go back and down the better.'
To this all agreed, but their retreat was now difficult. It might well prove impossible. Only a few paces from the ashes of their fire the snow lay many feet deep, higher than the heads of the hobbits; in places it had been scooped and piled by the wind into great drifts against the cliff.
'If Gandalf would go before us with a bright flame, he might melt a path for you,' said Legolas. The storm had troubled him little, and he alone of the Company remained still light of heart.
'If Elves could fly over mountains, they might fetch the Sun to save us,' answered Gandalf. 'But I must have something to work on. I cannot burn snow.'
'Well,' said Boromir, 'when heads are at a loss bodies must serve, as we say in my country. The strongest of us must seek a way. See! Though all is now snow-clad, our path, as we came up, turned about that shoulder of rock down yonder. It was there that the snow first began to burden us. If we could reach that point, maybe it would prove easier beyond. It is no more than a furlong off, I guess.'
'Then let us force a path thither, you and I!' said Aragorn.
Aragorn was the tallest of the Company, but Boromir, little less in height, was broader and heavier in build. He led the way, and Aragorn followed him. Slowly they moved off, and were soon toiling heavily. In places the snow was breast-high, and often Boromir seemed to be swimming or burrowing with his great arms rather than walking.
Legolas watched them for a while with a smile upon his lips, and then he turned to the others. 'The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf or over snow-an Elf.'
With that he sprang forth nimbly, and then Frodo noticed as if for the first time, though he had long known it, that the Elf had no boots, but wore only light shoes, as he always did, and his feet made little imprint in the snow.
'Farewell!' he said to Gandalf. 'I go to find the Sun!' Then swift as a runner over firm sand he shot away, and quickly overtaking the toiling men, with a wave of his hand he passed them, and sped into the distance, and vanished round the rocky turn.
The others waited huddled together, watching until Boromir and Aragorn dwindled into black specks in the whiteness. At length they too passed from sight. The time dragged on. The clouds lowered, and now a few flakes of snow came curling down again.
An hour, maybe, went by, though it seemed far longer, and then at last they saw Legolas coming back. At the same time Boromir and Aragorn reappeared round the bend far behind him and came labouring up the slope.
'Well,' cried Legolas as he ran up, 'I have not brought the Sun. She is walking in the blue fields of the South, and a little wreath of snow on this Redhorn hillock troubles her not at all. But I have brought back a gleam of good hope for those who are doomed to go on feet. There is the greatest winddrift of all just beyond the turn, and there our Strong Men were almost buried. They despaired, until I returned and told them that the drift was little wider than a wall. And on the other side the snow suddenly grows less, while further down it is no more than a white coverlet to cool a hobbit's toes.'
'Ah, it is as I said,' growled Gimli. 'It was no ordinary storm. It is the ill will of Caradhras. He does not love Elves and Dwarves, and that drift was laid to cut off our escape.'
'But happily your Caradhras has forgotten that you have Men with you,' said Boromir, who came up at that moment. 'And doughty Men too, if I may say it; though lesser men with spades might have served you better. Still, we have thrust a lane through the drift; and for that all here may be grateful who cannot run as light as Elves.'
'But how are we to get down there, even if you have cut through the drift?' said Pippin, voicing the thought of all the hobbits.
'Have hope!' said Boromir. 'I am weary, but I still have some strength left, and Aragorn too. We will bear the little folk. The others no doubt will make shift to tread the path behind us. Come, Master Peregrin! I will begin with you.'
He lifted up the hobbit. 'Cling to my back! I shall need my arms' he said and strode forward. Aragorn with Merry came behind. Pippin marvelled at his strength, seeing the passage that he had already forced with no other tool than his great limbs. Even now, burdened as he was, he was widening the track for those who followed, thrusting the snow aside as he went.
They came at length to the great drift. It was flung across the mountainpath like a sheer and sudden wall, and its crest, sharp as if shaped with knives, reared up more than twice the height of Boromir; but through the middle a passage had been beaten, rising and falling like a bridge. On the far side Merry and Pippin were set down, and there they waited with Legolas for the rest of the Company to arrive.
After a while Boromir returned carrying Sam. Behind in the narrow but now well-trodden track came Gandalf, leading Bill with Gimli perched among the baggage. Last came Aragorn carrying Frodo. They passed through the lane; but hardly had Frodo touched the ground when with a deep rumble there rolled down a fall of stones and slithering snow. The spray of it half blinded the Company as they crouched against the cliff, and when the air cleared again they saw that the path was blocked behind them.
'Enough, enough!' cried Gimli. 'We are departing as quickly as we may!'
And indeed with that last stroke the malice of the mountain seemed to be expended, as if Caradhras was satisfied that the invaders had been beaten off and would not dare to return. The threat of snow lifted; the clouds began to break and the light grew broader.
As Legolas had reported, they found that the snow became steadily more shallow as they went down, so that even the hobbits could trudge along. Soon they all stood once more on the flat shelf at the head of the steep slope where they had felt the first flakes of snow the night before.

Fanbind of "Rebuild your Seawall (brick by brick)" by @deheerkonijn & @roselightfairy

I am so so happy to be able to share with you the complete project, and I really want to thank both Deheer and Roselightfairy for giving me permission to bind their work!

This fanfic has a special place in my heart and I'm happy to be able to give it a proper place on my bookshelf. I think it resonated with me a lot in ways that other depictions of depression never have- it really reflected my experience of depression as the gutting feeling of something that you've never experienced, yet you feel is the right way things should have been, and you never stop longing for it. If you're at all in the mood for some introspective fanfic, I highly reccomend it.
Much more unnecessary details under the cut and how the entire binding experience went, and as always thank you to the @/renegadebindery discord server without whose members I would be doing nothing at all!
Okay so! To say that this book is rounded and backed would be an insult to all bookbinders in the world but there was a sincere try at it, and it didn't really come out, but it did just enough that there's a real noticeable roundness at the spine which I am OBSESSED with. I WILL be trying to do this again with every single one of my future projects.
This project actually originally started as a way to use a ton of scrap materials I had that would have been more noticeable on a bigger project. The textblock was printed on alternating cardstocks because I didn't have enough of a single type left, and many of them are a bit faded because my printer was running out of ink. I actually kind of like the effect, but I wish the title illustration came out more defined and less foggy, since it was already pretty blurred as a file. This is also the first time I put in a bookmark! It looks different in the pictures but it is almost IDENTICAL to the colour of the endpapers, which was a wonderful gift my mum brought home from a trip. I love it in contrast to the more minimalistic cover pattern, even if those blues clearly do not match.
This is also the project with which I discovered the magic and miracles of using wheat paste to adhere the endpapers to your covers instead of glue and oh my god. I was blind this whole time. Wheat paste goes on so smooth and uniform and gives you SOO much wiggle room to adjust things. I am never going back go endpapers with pvc ever again. It does have the side effect of being very moist and it did warp the textblock inside a bit, but that's very much my fault since I keep using cardboard instead of actual press board for my books since press board is so uncommon here. And hey some might say using professional material instead of substituting medical gauze for fraynot might help your book be better but what do I know. I am just an idiot who made the mistake of letting glue dry WAYYYYY to much TWICE on the same project. (Once before rounding; once after making the cover and forgetting cardboard warps when glued. I am very bright).
Making the title graphics was also so rewarding yet so so so difficult. Mostly because I've been overwhelmed by my life so it took me ages to sketch out a design I did like. And when I finally had it, and I asked my aunt to borrow the machine she uses to print on fabric, we had to keep delaying for different reasons that kept coming up. But I'm SO glad to have a proper cover on there. It's difficult to keep being proud and happy of it since it's been so long since I was done with the actual object, but honestly it's really satisfying to have a book with your OWN, personalized cover on it. I'm also very proud of the nautical theme inside- in general I put a lot of care in making the textblock feel coherent.
After this experience I do think I'll order some proper board since I want my next project to come out as good as I possibly can. Though I am still on the ledge about what my next project will actually be. Maybe in the meantime I'll stick to figuring out a logo and name for myself.
And maybe next time I'll remember to take some decent process pics too!

Last Line Game
I miss your writing, RLF! We must end up writing in the same fandom again one day, lol. (Reblogging to my Fantastic Beasts account instead of my Tolkien primary.)
I don't know what the last line I actually wrote was, but this is the last line I edited. (I have a...long sentence problem. But I was raised on Tolkien & then got a theory-heavy sociology degree, so I can't be held responsible lmao)
Theseus watched him briefly let go of her when there was a sudden roar of sound from a group in the corner; and he danced in a small circle and shook out his hands’ tiny sparks of magic before he settled into her shadow again, at which point Theseus was engulfed in a mother’s hug that felt like home.
I’m tagging @afrenchaugurey @themysteriousphoenix @oenothera5 @delphiniumblooms @scamanderishredmayniac @salamanderscamander @exasperatedtinagoldstein @katisfania @gellalaer to participate, in any language or medium. No pressure to join, of course, and anyone not tagged may feel free to join! (I honestly have a hard time keeping up with who's inactive on here when /sweat emoji)
Last Line Game
Tagged by @tathrin, and frankly I'm just happy I have something to use for this! I'm assuming this is the last line you wrote?
Could anyone who had asserted their will over this knowledge resist the urge to leave a trace?

Tagging @enide-s-dear @brasspumpkinspice @unnamedelement and anyone else who wants to do it!

Tagged by @roselightfairy, thank you! I never remember to check my stats on this stuff, so it's always interesting to see when somebody reminds me that that's a feature that exists lol.
How many works do you have on AO3? Ninety-six, which is nearly everything I've ever written, although there are a few very-very-very-old-and-abandoned fics that never made it off FFnet (and do not need to shhhh!).
What's your total AO3 word count? 2,010,650 (we're not going to talk about how I discovered a little while ago that there's a character-limit for individual google doc; thank goodness for Ellipsus!)
Your Top 5 Stories by Kudos:
Green-Eyed Snake - an old HP fic from back before the TERF-in-Chief made even thinking about that fandom unendurably vile, and it's funny to me that this one has accrued the most kudos because it's a canon-compliant take on Slytherin!Harry which means it makes a lot of readers very very angry even to this day, since I refused to write this bewildered ten-year-old as a suave and sexy machiavellian mastermind lmao.
The Filth of Saruman - a gap-filler Gimleaf story which I am delighted to see take the second-top spot, because it's one that I'm quite fond of myself. It features the obligatory post-Helm's-Deep-bathing-together-scene, in which Gimli is Having A Lot Of Feelings That He Is Not Interested In Articulating To Himself Yet, Thank You! which has definitely become a common feature of my stories.
A Slip Of The Tongue - another Legolas and Gimli post-Helm's Deep one, albeit set in Movie!Continuity which is a rarity for me, in which there is a little more articulating, if only by accident. Also featuring Third Wheel Aragorn, which is my favorite flavor of Aragorn. This one is short and cute and I like it a lot for what it is, so I'm pleased to see it's a popular one too!
Green-Eyed Snake II: Heir Of Slytherin - book two of the aforementioned series. Alas, I only made it through book four before her vileness became too prominent to make writing this stuff palatable, which means we never got to the stage of their adolescence in which we would have gotten into all the queerness and gender-fuckery that would have really pissed her off.
A Broken Bridge In Erebor - Oh I think this is my first romantically-inclined Gimleaf fic, actually? So it's lovely to see that this one is well-liked too. Not that they get to the point of articulating/figuring out any actual romantic feelings here either, so it could just as easily have been tagged with the & as the / — but one of the joys of gimleaf as a ship to me is that there's no real notable difference in how their relationship is written on either side of the romantic/platonic divide. They're together, whether they're kissing or not, and that's what really matters.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Oh, yes! Yes yes a thousandfold. The whole point, to me, of sharing fanfic is having people share their thoughts back. Otherwise you might as well just leave them sitting on your hard drive, right? Fandom is supposed to be a shared space, where we can all squeal and gush and flail and talk to one another about the stuff we like, so I absolutely answer back when people are generous enough to share their thoughts or feelings with me!
Do you write crossovers?
Nope. Although I do have an old Star Wars/LotR cross-over from way back in college that never made it past the opening chapters that I might dig-out for the briliant @goodintentionswipfest next year, now that I remember it exists!
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do, as of pretty recently. I'm not sure how to define "what kind" because I'm not really sure what kinds there are, uh...cross-cultural/cross-species stuff that is heavily centered in world building, I guess? I'm not sure if that's what the question is asking exactly, but that's an accurate way to describe what I write at least lol.
I started mainly because I wanted to get my fantasy-biology-headcanons down in more coherent form than just random unwritten musings, and I admit that's still what I find most fascinating about the concept, most of the time. But the more of it I write, the more I enjoy the characterization and emotional moments you can get into those scenes, so that's fun.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not so far as I know. Although I did have some of my fics kicked off FFnet before.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Somebody once asked to do one but I don't think they ever did, or at least, I don't have a link to it if they did; but I suppose since I wouldn't be able to read it in any other language because I suck, it doesn't really matter (except that I'd love to have linked to it from the story). I think it's incredibly cool that there are people who both can and want to do that stuff, though!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not, although I've done a lot of shared-world-building with @babybat98 for Green/Mirkwood which is sort of fic-co-writing adjacent I guess (and is also loads of fun).
What's your all time favorite ship?
About that... yeah. It's funny, really, because I spent my early years of LotR fandom virulently opposed to the very idea of them being a ship (thanks to personal issues with romance-vs-friendship at the time, due to being terrified that someday I would fall prey to icky-romance-grossness myself eww) and now, I am clearly not only very invested in them (shh) but in fact, I would say that I literally "learned how to ship" from them lmao.
So, yeah. I loved them together even before I was willing to accept that they were "together," tbh. (Adolescence is complicated when you don't even know your sexuality exists, okay?) Now that I have, I'm quite happily besotted.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but probably never will?
Ugghh definitely Shadows Creeping. It's a mess of a fic that would take SO much effort to fix, and thus all but impossible to even think about finishing, but it's sooooo close to the end of the story, and I feel bad forever that I let it languish like that.
What are your writing strengths?
Descriptions and world building for sure. (A little too much so sometimes lol.) I'm also pretty good at chameleon-ing—adapting tone/style to match or at least mesh with somebody else's (see: the Celebrimbor Fellowship AU, my Animorphs AU Series, or even the aforementioned HP crap, in all of which I've tried to ape the original author's writing style, sometimes to the point of even sliding excerpts from the original text right into the story, hopefully seamlessly). Oh, and fight scenes! I'm told those are a real struggle for a lot of people, but I find they generally come pretty easy to me, and are fun to do.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Too much description and world building. I get lots in the exposition-weeds way too easily. I struggle to find the balance between telling enough and telling way way way more than anyone wants to actually read. And tend to err very much on the side of the latter. Oops.
What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet, but want to?
I haven't actually written Celebrimbor/Anntar/Narvi together on the page yet, although I've come close. Honestly if I had all the time in the world, I would love to sit down and work on putting together that Huge Epic Rise And Fall Of Ost-in-Edhil Fic that feels like has been lurking in the back of my brain pretty much since the first time I read the Silm, if not longer.
What's your favorite fic that you've written?
Ohhhh I have such a hard time picking favorites for anything, really, because "favorite" always depends on "of what sort" to me...but if I have to, I'll probably go with this one, because it's the story I'm currently fixated on. For completed stories, probably this one. And for best thing I've ever written, it's hands-down this one. (Once I have the remaining two parts of that trilogy written, I think I want to get them all printed so I can put them on my bookshelf, that's how happy I am with it!)
Thank you so much for tagging me for this @roselightfairy, it was loads of fun to look at and think about stuff I don't often spend time/though on. And I shall in turn tag: @babybat98 @sallysavestheday @thescrapwitch @mossy-thing
