A Thousand Times

Summary:

A cobbled-together series of snippets from an unrealized story in which Legolas and Gimli struggle through adversity, plan to go on a quest, and get married many, many times. (Most of it is just that last part.) Unfinished work, posted for Good Intentions WIPFest 2023.

I held onto this story for so long even though I think I'd kind of given up on it about two months in - but there's some writing here I desperately wanted to share, so finally, for @goodintentionswipfest this year, I am letting it into the world. It is sketchy and full of outliney bits, but it also contains some writing I'm very proud of. If you take a chance on it, I hope there are bits you'll enjoy, at least!

Reminder that Good Intentions WIP Fest is coming up on October 31st! Dredge up those stories taking up space in your documents and in your mind and release them to the world! Let us see all that writing that would otherwise be denied to your readers! Let your dead come out to play!

This is a fest for people like me, who would rather have some of an amazing fic (or piece of art) than none of it at all. It's an invitation to free yourself from your guilt - and it's an invitation to readers to take a chance, read a story, and talk to an author. Who knows - maybe inspiration will strike again! Or at least you might learn how the story was going to end.

Posted this one a little while ago, but does an abandoned fic even know time...? (Answer: clearly not.)

The premise of the fic is a what-if? canon-divergence idea where both Gandalf and Aragorn die in Moria, leaving the Fellowship to struggle on without either of their leaders.

And unfortunately, I did not leave any notes for my future-self when I started working on it originally, so every time I've tried to go back to it since my initial burst of work has run into the roadblock of my having no (middle-)earthly idea what was meant to HAPPEN?

I still don't know, but here's the immediate aftermath at least, while the Fellowship tries to pull themselves together in Lórien and figure out how to go on with the Quest without Aragorn or Gandalf there to guide them. We make it as far as the Anduin...

And there we leave them, to sink or swim as chance wills.

Jaiden: What can I say, I'm just super friendly.

Cellbit: You know, Cucurucho liking you isn't that much of like, a good thing, ok? Just don't- don't get like, super–

Jaiden: No, I mean like, I'm not- I'm not saying that, you know, I like him back or anything, I'm just saying that they- they have a soft-spot for me. Whatever that means.

Cellbit: How is your relation with Cucurucho going? Like, have you seen him recently?

Jaiden: Uhhh, what do you mean?

Cellbit: 'Cuz you have like, a rocky relationship with him, don't you?

Jaiden: Yeah, yeah, yeah, last- last time we- I– he took me away for a bit, but uh... It's been, you know, normal. I feel like he treats me the same as he does everyone else. Yeah, he gave me a task.

Cellbit: What's your task?

Jaiden: To research rhinos.

Cellbit: Oh, yeah, you told me about that! [...] You think the Cucurucho that likes you is the like, cheerleader one or is it the gun one?

Jaiden: Um, I- I'll be honest, I think both of them like me.

Cellbit: Wow, ok.

Jaiden: What can I say, I'm just super friendly.

Cellbit: Yeah...

Cellbit: Yeah, when– like, if you ever see them with a chainsaw, you know, you probably want to go to the other direction, that's just like, an experienced hint I can give you.

Jaiden: Yeah, yeah, yeah...

Cellbit: But I don't think they would do that to you, they seem to have like, their own preferences and stuff.

Jaiden: Yeah, I mean, they've only done that to you, so they must– they just really don't like you.

Cellbit: Yeah, but they kinda like did some shtty things to other people, they shot Bagi, they shot- they shot most of the Island, at this point.

Jaiden: Yeah, they did, they did shoot Bagi. That's- that's not good.

Cellbit: Maybe they just like Hatsune Miku, and they- they confused stuff.

Jaiden: That is true! Actually, they're– I don't even know if this is like, who this is in the Federation, but someone um... Mouse was like, showing me a picture of– Sorry, I have to tab in. [She punches Cellbit] Um... [Laughs]

Cellbit: Ow, that was rude! [Chuckles]

Jaiden: I had to tab in! [Laughs] My Animal Crossing music had to restart!

Cellbit: [Laughs]

Jaiden: Mouse was saying that someone in the Federation uh, was placing tiny Hatsune Mikus in there, so someone in the Federation likes Hatsune Miku.

Cellbit: Hmm... That explains a lot, then.

Jaiden: [Laughs] What do you mean? No it doesn't!

Cellbit: No, no. Now I understand that it's a whole– it's a whole scheme, it's a whole corruption scheme, now I understand.

Jaiden: Ah no, it's not corruption–

I was robbed of what could’ve been an amazing star crossed lovers romance of two people from another world, it didn’t even need to be romance, I just wish that the star could’ve been this amazing character design of a boy with a glowing cape made of a galaxy, instead we got another quirky marketable star plushie that I kept forgetting was in the movie half the time

this time last year my dad and i had just packed the car in a rush and set off on our moving roadtrip, out of the awful situation i grew up in that only got worse over the years. we'd spent the year dealing with food insecurity, financial insecurity, a shitton more trauma and pain.

and today we have a nice apartment in a much better state where both of us can live as openly as we like or not. We get to choose now, and money is now, i'd say 15% the problem it used to be; it's amazing.

i like it here, its cold it snows there's simple ways to make money when youre not scared to death that the survey site might deny you the handful of cents you need to cash out the five dollars that could feed you for the night.

If nothing else in our life, my dad and I succeeded in our first 'life goal:' Escape. so whatever happens next, we made it through that at least.
