I need advice,

I have a terrarium that I’ve been working on (bio active) and currently the only animals I have in it are some isopods, which are my clean up crew, eventually I plan on eventually getting an animal to put in there like a lizard or gecko. However, the tank came with a loose fitting metal mesh top that wasn’t keeping in moisture, so I began to temporarily use a thick plastic sheet. That worked for a while, but then it began bending upwards at the sides due to the heat from my grow lights, and the isopods began to escape. Now I have to weigh the sides down with heavy books and it’s just not stylish. Plus I need to still have a way to air out the tank, as I believe the plants are too moist and may have developed root rot. Does anyone have some good tank lid recommendations? Preferably not too expensive? If so please link it.

Kill 'em with love.

This morning I was busy congratulating myself on how magical I am -- because I can take one lovely, albeit decidedly not-thriving, ornamental begonia and turn it into four smaller begonias.

However, when I pulled the begonia out of the pot -- which was plenty big (so why was it not thriving?!) -- I realized the plant had root rot.

I had watered it too much, and rot set in. In other words, I was killing it with love.

You'd think if a little water is good, then a lot of water is even better! Nay, think again. If the plant's roots aren't allowed a bit of respite between waterings, the entire foundation just turns to slop.

I'm hoping that by pulling the plant out of it's murky grave, separating the suckers and putting them into fresh, dry-ish, airy soil, I will be able to pull them back from the brink.

Will keep you posted on whether this attempt to save them will work.

Sclerotium rolfsii is widely distributed and economically important soil-borne pathogen causing root rot and southern blight in bell pepper. During 2015-16 and 2016-17 cropping season, farmer’s fields/greenhouses/low plastic tunnels of bell pepper were surveyed to assess the percent disease incidence in Pothohar Plateau (Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Jhelum, Attock and Islamabad territory) Punjab, Pakistan. The mean disease incidence at seeding stage in greenhouses varied from 0% to 8% with the average 4.1%. In low plastic tunnels at seeding stage the mean incidence was 0% to 15.5% with the average 7.4%. At maturity stage in greenhouses, the mean incidence varied from 0% to 12% with the average 4.5%. However, the mean incidence at maturity stage in open fields varied from 7% to 26.9% with the average 14.4%.Morphological characterization of 50 recovered isolates of Sclerotium rolfsiis howed silky-white or white to light cream colonies with submerged, thin flat, medium fluffy and fluffy texture. The sclerotia were round, shiny, cream to brown or dark brown and developed at aerial hyphae or surface. The formation of sclerotia was scattered throughout the plate or formed at peripheral ring of Petri dish. The hyphae were hyaline, thin walled and have infrequent cross walls with clamp connections. Mycelial branching was at right angle and developed hyphae were slightly constricted at the branch origin. The DNA of 5 highly virulent isolates were extracted and amplified using Large Subunit gene (LSU). The sequences share 99-100% similarity with S. rolfsii reference isolates and submitted to GenBank (accession numbers MG195620 to MG195624 respectively). S. rolfsiiwas ascertained as the causal agent, based on morphological & molecular evidence, which suggests further investigation for the management of this potential threat to bell pepper production in Pakistan.

I read this as an ARC.

This is such a weird novella that mostly works.

I liked the writing style with its nameless characters aside from some identifiers (we're at the Lake House, with our adults and nine children--the Baby, the Liar…). We're following sort of interconnected events…scenes? in which our kid characters witness some truly bizarre stuff that is difficult to explain. I found that this worked and grew increasingly uncomfortable the longer it went on. For me, the middle of the story was the strongest and I would recommend this horror story to those looking for something truly weird.

But also, can we talk about that stunning cover??
