After 7 seasons and 176 episodes Star Trek the Next Generation came to an end. The series finale aired on May 23, 1994. The episode book ended the series with Q (John de Lancie), who first appeared in the series premier Encounter at Farpoint (1987). Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) found himself unstuck in time, traveling both to the past, present, and the future. The episode won the series their second Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. It was the first time Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) was seen since her controversal death in Skin of Evil (1988) and the last time Q would appear until in Picard (2020 - 2023). The series would continue on as theatrical movies (Generations - 1994, First Contact - 1996, Insurrection - 1998, Nemesis 2002) and then the series Picard. The Prisoner of Zenda is an 1894 adventure novel by Anthony Hope about the fictional King of Ruritania and doppelganger English cousin. Adapted many times over the years to stage and screen, Ramón Novarro, Ronald Coleman, Steward Granger, Christopher Plummer and even Peter Sellers have all starred in the title roles. Who, one wonders, wore the costume best?
And back to Grainger

Possibly the most terrifying space photograph ever taken on February 7, 1984 . NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless floats untethered 320ft from his spacecraft using only his nitrogen-propelled, hand controlled backpack called a Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU) to keep him alive. Photo was taken by Robert L. "Hoot"Gibson pilot of the shuttle Challenger using a Hasselblad camera.
In the close up photo Astronaut Bruce McCandless II, one of two STS-41B mission specialists participating in a historic spacewalk is a few meters away from the cabin of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Challenger in this 70mm frame using a Hasselblad Camera. This spacewalk represented the first use of the MMU which provided greater mobility than that afforded previous spacewalkers who had to use restrictive tethers. Robert L. Stewart later tried out the MMU McCandless is using here, and the two of them tested another similar unit two days later. Inside the spacecraft were astronauts Vance D. Brand, commander; Robert L. Gibson, pilot; and Ronald E. McNair, mission specialist.

New-Who style Historical Author Episode where the second doctor and co meet Tolkein (cybermen in oxford, of course) and end up inspiring some hobbit spirit. Tolkein is also excited to converse with a fluent gaelic speaker (Even tho he kind of disliked scottish gaelic; his celtic interest was in welsh.)
#i actually tohught about this because i was thinking of the war games#and that famous quote from About Fairy Tales about the prisoners right and duty to escape and go home or talk of it#unrealistic as it may be#also 'Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart :D!' voice '! John Ronald Reuel Tolkein!! :D!'#bonus point if you get cameos or full on secondary starring of either Edith Tolkein or another Inkling

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.

Felt like it was important. Marvelous Marvin was a champion boxer during Dean's childhood (mid- to late 80s)!!!
Marvelous Marvin is also a nod to a Marvelous Marvin Hagler, a middleweight boxing champion and a callback to Dean's psychosexual crush and wrestling interests in Beyond the Mat. As far as angels go, Cas is something of a middleweight champion--not a "heavyweight" archangel, but not a lower-ranking angel either. Ergo, Marvin is also a stand-in for Silvia's unseen love rival.
FYI, this also strengthens my feeling that Dean and Cas may have bought Marvin together for Jack. Cas, because it's his style to buy soft, fluffy things for his loved ones (Claire & Grumpy Cat) and Dean, because he would've kinda wanted it too for the reference to a beloved boxing figure. (Dean was at least along for the ride, and he found it hilarious.)
Cas & Dean also bought Grumpy Cat together, after all. They went to the mall together. Cas is Grumpy Cat, and Claire is also Grumpy Cat. Cas's also Marvin, and Jack is also Marvin (and Dean can be Marvin too, if you like).
I also feel like Marvelous Marvin is a relatively new item in the household, or else we'd have seen it next to the photo of Kelly, combined with Kelly's laptop message, or on Jack's bed. There's a good chance it's also a birthday gift, like Grumpy Cat was.
BONUS: There are red boxing gloves in the Dean-Cave! AU Bobby boxes with Jack in 14x01. Jack dresses like Rocky Bilboa when he's training as a human! (It's the gray sweatsuit of the infamous Gonna Fly Now running scene!)
Dean's the wrestler. Jack's the boxer. I love it.
(Cas gets a cinematic boxing scene too in Purgatory, complete with slow-mo uppercuts. It's right before they get to the rift. Actually, a lot of snippets in season 8 are boxing-like for Cas, such as when he's hard to knock down in the warehouse when they try to save Samandriel. Or even as early as his season 4 fight with Uriel. In several scripts, like Good Intentions, Cas is referred to as "bobbing and weaving," which is a fighting phrase that derives from boxing.)
Anyway, I was delighted to notice these motifs.
ADDENDUM: Realistically, I think Jack may have been present when they bought the bear, and it may have been Dean who originally told the cashier that the bear was, "for his stepson, Ronald," which is an ominous reference to James "Jimmy" Stewart's stepson, Ronald McLean who was famously killed in Vietnam as a Marine.
#jack stuff#marvelous marvin#wrestling is also john adjacent since dean worshipped john growing up#and john took him to see wrestling matches

On 6th November 2014 Colonel Sir Ronald Thomas Stewart Macpherson known to his friends as Tommy, and his enemies as the "Kilted Killer"passed away.
Tommy was born October 4th 1920 in Edinburgh, the was youngest of seven children of Sir Thomas Stewart Macpherson and Helen Cameron, he was educated at Edinburgh Academy prep school before Cargilfield, in Barnton. At 14, he went to Fettes College, where he joined the Officers' Training Corps. He also attended Trinity College, Oxford, where he was awarded a first class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.Tommy represented Oxford at rugby, hockey and athletics and was also an international student athlete at 1500 metres. His older brother, Phil was captain of Scotland's first Grand Slam winning rugby side in 1925.
At the outbreak of WWII Macpherson was commissioned in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders before joining the commandos a year later, he was captured by Italian troops during a reconnaissance on the headquarters of Field Marshal Rommel in North Africa, after two failed escape attempts they sent him to, another camp at Gavi, near Genoa, then onto several Stalags, during which of course he tried again to escape!!! He was almost shot this time it was a countermand from the German Officer that saved him. By 1943 he was in Stalag XVIII-A in Austria and on September 21st after several attempts he managed to make good his escape.
Macpherson and 3 others managed to travel to Sweden via Bromberg and Gdynia before flying back to Kinloss, Scotland on 4th November 1943, two years after he had been captured in Egypt.
BUT!! Yes men like Mcpherson rarely lay on their laurel, he was seconded to a special operation named “Jedburgh”. Under this operation three man units were to be dropped into occupied Europe to carry out sabotage and guerrilla warfare, acting as a high-profile focus for the local resistance.
Two days after the Allies had stormed the Normandy beaches, he was parachuted behind enemy lines in France wearing his Highlander’s battledress aye, including his kilt. The unit was tasked with liaising with French resistance and causing mayhem and boy was he successful, the Germans soon had wanted posters plastered all across France with a 300,000 franc bounty placed describing and he was described as "A bandit masquerading as a Scottish officer and extremely dangerous to the citizens of France". His appearance caused quite a stir among the local Resistance fighters, many who had never seen a man in a kilt before. One excited young man even mistook him for a French officer’s wife!
On one occasion when a German staff car was approaching a level crossing Macpherson booby-trapped the barrier arm so it crashed down on the vehicle, decapitating the local commandant and his driver.
Macpherson’s finest hour came that summer in 1944, around 23,000 hardened German troops were travelling to Normandy so it was imperative that they were stopped, or at least, delayed. A small band of the French resistance held a vital bridge in the Loire valley, preventing them from passing. But with 23,000 soldiers, there was only going to be one victor if it came to a battle. Armed with this information, Macpherson stole a German jeep and drove through ten miles of enemy soldiers, until he reached their field headquarters.
Stepping out of the vehicle, the star of so many wanted posters demanded an audience with the commanding officer, Major General Elster. Elster was stunned. The king of bluff, Macpherson cooly informed Elster that he had 20,000 of his own men nearby, along with tanks and RAF bombers waiting in the wings. Surrender, laddie, or die he threatened, Tommy was only 21 at the time!
Of course, this was all complete and utter guff but Elster fell for it, hook, line and sinker. 23,000 enemy soldiers, spearheaded by the feared SS Panzer Division, had waved the white flag to MacPherson.
With France freed from Nazi rule, Tommy was quickly dispatched to Italy to do it all again. It was here that he faced a new enemy, Yugoslavian leader Tito, who was intent on taking parts of Italy. Given Macpherson’s tried and tested methods of killing sprees, blowing bridges and destroying supplies and communications, a second bounty was placed on his head.
After the war he continued to serve in the territorials for a number of years, he also loved his rugby and was a regular player at fly-half for London Scottish as skipper of the 2nd XV but playing mostly for the 1st XV.from 1946 to 1955 when he hung up his boots.
There’s a wee bit more about this very brave man here. https://dirkdeklein.net/2016/03/11/forgotten-history-major-tommy-macpherson/
