bing bong bootleg SS au
very long ramble under the C
stuff are subjected to change
The working title isn't solidified but I'm leaning on either Candy Castle or Pastry Castle
Tho I think I'm gonna go for pastry cuz it has the same amount of letters as castle much like pizza and tower have the same number too
The tower is a gingerbread castle. According to a friend of mine (It's Beefy, it's always Beefy go follow him) that Hispanics love their bakeries and yeah, I guess that makes sense. Not only do I have a theme based on the protag's culture but also the theme gets narrowed down to just baked sweets. Candy in general is too broad, I would die figuring out how to put every kind of sweet in it, and if I did it's gonna be really cluttered hooboy
Noise is called Theo because that's Peppino's name formula. Peppino is a nickname for Giuseppe so I thought I'd give Noise's swap a nickname to Theodore as the main name
Hazel Nutt is pretty self explanatory cuz Noisette means hazelnut in French
Their outfits are pretty simple to mirror Peppino and Gustavo's with just coloured shirts and aprons
Hazel doesn't get a mount because she would have Theo's prototype rocket skates. Just like Gus, she would have different stages of getting used to the skates per floor. First she gets blasted from end to end cuz she can't control the thrust. Second, she manages to turn it off but she's trying to keep balance on it. Third, she catches her breath now that she could stand still without moving or slipping. Next she would make a card castle, in reference to the very castle they're inside. and lastly she'd be holding a box of sweets without giving a shit about the scary floor.
To parallel the og Noisette, Hazel would smile bigger when Theo faces her direction.
Hazel is also Theo's delivery gal to match and switch with how Peppino WAS Gustavo's delivery guy
The "kick the rat" function would be Hazel swinging one of the skates and the cops grabbing Brick would instead hold a weapon detector that also functions as a magnet
Unlike Peppino, Theo is more aggressive than anxious. Imagine an injured cat defending itself from what it thinks is a threat
the name of Pizzaface's swap is Pieface for obvious reasons 😭
but HEAR ME OUT
both pizzaface and pieface are used as insults. pizza face is used for people with so much acne and pie face is used for someone with a flat face or dull expression. It isn't just a pun on what food the characters are made of. Pieface is also a reference to the trope where people headshot other people with pies. With the mech floating towards the protag, it would look like a pie is being thrown and targeted at Theo
Honestly drawing what food makes his face is so fun. Did you know that before the croissant smile it was supposed to be syrup shaped to a smile? The nose was a long whip of cream before turning into a cut strawberry for the mustache effect
Pizzahead's candy version would be called Gingerhead because of how ridiculous it sounds.
Gingerhead is based on Willy Wonka much like how Pizzahead is based on Ronald McDonald which is why he has more of a showman look than a clown look
okay side note, it just occured to me how ironic PH being based on Ronald is considering McDo's isn't a pizza place
actually Wonka doesn't even sell cakes and shit so, I guess it's fair game
Theo has the nickname Muffinman to reference the rhyme. but this time, it's the gingerbreadman chasing the baker
Next up is Mr S, who would be Peppino but he becomes rich. Mr S is the stage name he uses. He is a known celebrity much as Noise is but he is more of a boxer than a host. Like Dwayne Johnson or something. His name is partially a reference to ResEvil's Mr X, another absolute unit of a guy
also the reason why he doesn't wear a shirt. He's committing to the bit. If he needs to cover himself when he isn't playing a role, then there's his robe. He doesn't take out his mask most of the time tho
Mr S's mask is based on the Chef Raider design but also part of the scrapped superhero design much like Pizzano. Actually speaking of Pizzano, S is characterized so similarly to him cuz Pizzano is the only SS character who was actually written well to my standards. To be fair we've seen too much of Peppino to flunk characterizing him sksksk
Since this is Peppino that Mr S is based on, he's not as tech savvy or as self centered as Noise so he doesn't have robots that look like himself. Instead he has ants for a crew
the ants swap the place of rats. the rats in PT reference the new york pizza rat while ants just generally eat your food especially if it's sweet when left alone for five minutes
the ants come from Mr G, who would be Gustavo's swap with Noisette. He's Mr S's lawyer. at the end of S's bossfight, G would snatch him away with Click (the ant) because S would make a foul and embarrassing move on live camera
I can't seperate Gustavo and Brick so Click stays with Mr G instead of assisting Hazel
inside what would be Noisette cafe, instead of Mr G and Click being behind the counter, they would be sitting as customers next to Caraman. the barista isn't seen anywhere
Honestly when I'm writing everyone, my logic of swapping them isn't "make them switch places AND personalities" but more of "write every single one of them with the og personality because giving them a different lifestyle/role would drastically change their motives and how they behave"
I'm practically just swapping each character's place of birth
I mentioned this because it's kinda funny with Noisette and Gus since they play the exact same role of assisting Peppino/Noise so swapping them won't change much in how they act. They also have the same cheery and welcoming personality by default so Hazel and Mr G would act REALLY similar to their og
The only difference is that Gustavo can be threatening whenever Peppino fucks up. It fits right in with being a lawyer for the same goon
Now we got Mel Caraman who would become this au's Vigi. Lemme just say off the bat that Caraman is just as delusional as Vigi. He gets hired as a guard for floor 2 and took it way too seriously that he thinks he's some sort of sentinel. Hired as a guard but thinks he's an ancient guardian or something
his name vaguely references James Bond because you also VAGUELY get "caramel" out of "Caraman, Mel Caraman"
Caraman is a caramel apple but he's half glazed to form an eyemask. he's also got a stick poking out his head that stretches his chorro hat. the big hat makes him look cooler anyways. Bro I was so ready to settle for a shitty wild west mayor hat and I owe Beefy one for suggesting a new hat. I was gonna make him look like Doug Dimmadome with the short brimmed tall hat😭😭😭
but yeah Caraman doesn't have the same dignity as Vigi does. He can fight crime decently on normal circumstances and badass when he's full serious. But like day in day out he's so obnoxious about looking for crime that people get tired of him nor would they take him seriously
he would also be mistaken for a pepper
Next to last, Cam M. Bert or just Bert who would take place of Pepperman. he's an artist who appreciates the world instead of himself, a freelancer also. There was only a bossfight because he was coincidentally commissioned to make a mural for the castle the same time Theo busts in. He didn't like how Theo ruined some of his works with his rush to open the door
Bert is a cream cheese instead of a cheese slime. his beret is actually a little cherry to distinguish him from the other creams.
Bert is really chill and humble, He's like Bob Ross, whenever he can, he'd try to talk about how every beauty in the world should be immortalized through a canvas
In parallel to Vigi's delusion of thinking he's a human, Bert thinks he's actually a living painting (which is completely possible for someone to be in the PT world since Pepperman was able to do it with his own art)
instead of a :{ face that Vigilante has, Bert has a :3 face
the naming formula is taken directly from Vigi
Vig E. Lantte
Cam M. Bert
There is a type of sweet cheese that's really creamy called camembert which his name is a direct reference from. Here is a picture of a camembert since it's hella cute
Tumblr media
Camembert cheese was also suggested by Beefy, brother thank you for not allowing me to name this cunt Creamlad
Mr Lardo would be in place of Mr Stick but his motive is that he's collecting Theo's money on BEHALF of Mr Stick. They're probably the only ones who completely stay intact because there's not much canon info of Stick WITHIN the game itself I also feel he's a crossover character from his own "series" with how long McPig has him prior to PT so I just swap the character who makes the "cameo"
The toppins are still called toppins because they'd be used to decorate a cake or pie. They would be
Strawberry - Mushroom
Cream - Cheese
Cookie - Tomato
Icing (in a piping bag) - Sausage
actually I dont know yet for the pineapple but I'll get to it. I've only been figuring out this au since four days ago....
Lastly (of the characters), the Faker in this would be mechanical to match the original Noise's familiarity in robots
Fake Theo (temp name) would be engineered to be "Theo but way better" while actually being succesful with it. Faker would also sort of look like a mini figure of a ballerina. Referencing The Nutcracker
Opposite to Fake Peppino, Fake Theo is more graceful than terrifying but it's so uncanny how unnaturally pretty it is
and now some misc stuff
Title of the final level is When The Cookie Crumbles
the pepper pizza will be replaced with an extremely sweet pie and the immunity is caused by the sugar rush from it
Pizza Time is called Crunch Time
Pillar John would be a giant graham cracker since the walls are made of cookies instead of bricks. Gerome however, is a solidified bar of brownies. like a shittily made brownie that it just turned into a construction brick
Snotty is a pure white cream cheese and that's cuz he's actually made of glue. His name is Sticky
Pigs would either be bears or rabbits with how many times those two animals represented sweets
I'm gonna be clear with everyone here. I literally made this au cuz I'm going insane trying to make swap stuff with Pascal/Stefano when the au itself is so empty. sure it's colourful but it's so empty like I can't draw SS characters outside of poses
I tried like doing fanon modifications as I always do then there's so much I "modified" that at this point it's not Sugary Spire anymore. Just straight up a completely different au. The only similarity is that it's a swap au with sweets
it is what it is yknow. this is my life now. I said fuck it and went with the flow and boom, new personal au that I poured too much into
basically I blame Pascal for this

Records Day (prod 131)
Original airdate: June 9, 2005
Story by Magnus Scheving
Written by Noah Zachary, Cole Louie, Magnus Scheving
Directed by Magnus Scheving, Jonathan Judge
Executive producers - Magnus Scheving, Ragnheidur Melsted, Raymond P. Le Gue, Mark Read, Brown Johnson, Kay Wilson Stallings
Starring Magnus Scheving, Stefan Karl Steffanson, Julianna Rose Mauriello
Puppeteers - Ronald Binion, Gudmondor Thor Karason, Jodi Eichelberger, David Matthew Feldman, Julie Westwood, Sarah Burgess
Twas a time in history where this was my favourite LazyTown episode in history. I loved the plot, the song, the climax, and I liked the quality of production. This was the thirty first out of thirty five episodes of the first season of LazyTown to be filmed.
The episode begins with a recycled cold open from 'My Treehouse'. I guess it was recycled because Sportacus set a record of how fast he could get into the skutla (twelve seconds).
Tumblr media
In the lair, Robbie is being awarded the Laziest Person award by Milford and Sportacus. Sportacus is giving him the crown on an orange fluffy pillow, bowing down, praising Robbie, asking for an autograph and Milford is talking about how Robbie has always been his favourite. This sequence is just so funny writing-wise, not to mention Magnus' acting! Only one minute in and you can see why I love this episode.
Tumblr media
However, it turns out to be a dream and the crown on his head is his underwear. He screams at the sight of his red heart boxers. LOL! The only thing that's real is him grasping the LazyTown Book of Records in his arms. So he opens the book up and Sportacus has won every record - Fastest Run, Highest Jump, Most Races Won, Most Flips, Longest Throw, Most Energy, you name it and he's won it! Except Laziest Person. Robbie declares that award his. Also, has anybody noticed the descriptions for the records are just Lorem Ipsum text?
Tumblr media
So Robbie decides to set that record, but outside, where Milford can see it. Speaking of Milford, he is bringing Bessie a cup of fruit juice and asks if she needs anything else a buncha times and only stops when Bessie yells at him. (The kids ask Robbie what he's doing and he tells them about Record Day, then they ask Milford to do it again but Bessie is against it because things were getting broken by balls. They promised not to break anything this time and they go to tell the others.
Tumblr media
While the kids are walking to tell the others, Robbie tells them to be quiet and Trixie tells him that they're setting their own records and he gets super mad. I don't blame him either. Trixie is going to throw a ring through a.. life ring and set a record, Ziggy is gonna set a world record in ping pong until Stingy takes his idea so he does a record in golf, Pixel is gonna set a world record in video soccer (isn't the whole point to be active..?) and Stephanie is gonna hit a baseball as far as she can, but when they try, they fail miserably.
Tumblr media
Sportacus sees their failure, and he rides to LazyTown to help them. The sound of the airship wakes up Robbie. Sportacus asks the kids what's wrong and Stephanie tells him everything. So he says that they should do a team record, but they need some energy. Stephanie goes under a tree and Sportacus does the flying kick from Defeeted - a ball hits the tree and an apple falls into Stephanie's hand. Then they perform Energy, but with some different clips. This is personally my favourite version of the song.
Tumblr media
During the song, Stephanie kicks a ball and it almost flies through Milford's open window, but luckily Sportacus does a flying dive to catch it. The song ends and Milford asks to play, but he kicks the ball flying to Bessie's flowerpot. They can't play soccer anymore and Robbie fake cries. LOL!!
Tumblr media
Then Milford has to bring Bessie the LAZY ● TOWN NEWS which has a very captivating headline - 'MAYOR MEANSWELL SNORES TO LOUD'. Anyways, the kids decide to set a baseball record but Robbie has a ridiculously smart plan to catch one of their balls, break something with it, and blame it on them. He tries the plan, and what do you know?
Tumblr media
It makes a hole in Bessie's copy of LAZY ● TOWN NEWS which she has been reading since My Treehouse, apparently and she declares that they can't play with balls anymore. Who in the world voted HER for mayor? Not me that's for sure. LazyTown'd turn into FashionTown. While Milford is a good character, Bessie takes advantage of him too much times in this show and never stands up for himself.
Tumblr media
So the kids are super sad, but then they have the genius idea to ask Sportacus for help. But Robbie isn't having it. So he grabs a soccer ballsack and tries out the newest gadget he has - a soccer ball launcher. Stephanie sends Sportacus a letter to say that they want him there.
Tumblr media
You can see his visible happiness when he finds out the kids want him. So he decides to use the Sky Chaser (I always found the Sky Chaser epic, but not as epic as the skutla), but Robbie's flying soccer balls almost hit Sportacus and he dodges them all. A ball flies into the airship and hits the steering wheel, and the airship starts turning.
Tumblr media
While Sportacus is looking at the airship, a ball hits him in the head. He dodges every ball coming his way, and as Bessie says, 'saves himself' by going back to the ship. As he tries to go back to the ship, a ball hits him in the chest and he grabs onto the platform.
Tumblr media
How some people can watch this episode, see Robbie almost kill Sportacus because he wants to set a world record and still ship them or have Robbie as their favourite character is just BEYOND me. Then a ball hits him in the hand, and he's hanging on with ONE HAND!! Two wouldn't work for me. Sportacus is so epic! Sportacus grabs an apple he kept in his shirt, then a ball hits his hand and lands on Robbie's head. He tells him to 'WATCH IT!!'
Tumblr media
Excuse me, but he is hanging from a platform thousands of feet in the air. He can't hear you and even if he did he wouldn't give two f- fuji apples. Anyways, the kids finally decide they have to get him some Sports Candy. In positions. Ziggy has a golf club and is below the apple tree. Stephanie has a bat and is on the baseball court. Trixie is on the sports field with a ring. Stingy is in the treehouse with a ping pong paddle. Trixie hits a box full of soccer balls and it opens. Milford kicks it as hard as he can. BAM! I'd purposefully just hit Robbie with the ball (what type of ball..??)
Tumblr media
Pixel hits the soccer ball with his head (which is how he scored the winning goal in Soccer Sucker - oops. Spoiler alert! Eh, screw you, the production team already spoiled it themselves in Dear Diary and you had no problem with that. IT'S CAUSE I'M BLACK!!!!) and it hits the tree. The apple falls on the ground and Ziggy hits it with the golf club to Stingy's ping pong paddle.
Tumblr media
Also, it might just be me, but Stingy moving his eyes is totally unnerving. Stephanie hits the apple with her baseball bat as hard as she can and Sportacus catches it! I'm just surprised eight year olds thought this up, because Milford definitely didn't. So, Sportacus takes ONE single bite of the apple and suddenly has enough energy to climb up the platform and Stingy is laughing happily, like a maniac.
Tumblr media
So, another ball flies into the ship and hits a lever. The inbrake has released and the airship is moving! Sportacus hits a flying ball like Bruce Lee (Cheng Zhen) delivered his punches in 'Fist of Fury'. and the platform is up, and plays a recycled scene from 'Dr. Rottenstein'. It might be reused, but I enjoyed watching it in this episode more then that one. It's like how drinking water makes the rest of the day calmer. Watching the prior scene just made the ending of the climax cooler.
Tumblr media
While Robbie is leaving to the lair, Sportacus leaves the airship and tells them they were fantastic. They actually were. Sportacus, I can't believe YOU, a superhero who lives thousands of feet in the air had to be saved by some eight year old puppets. Eh, you're still my favourite. Milford tells them all that they've set a new record for the world's longest team flying disc soccer golf ping pong apple relay. They all sing Bing Bang to celebrate. Then Robbie trips and sits on the soccer launcher.
Tumblr media
He is launched into his lair and he lands on his orange fluffy chair (wasn't it outside the entire episode...???) and sends it flying back to the lair. He then says that MUST have been some type of record. LOL!!
10/10. It has been years since I watched it and I still love it the same!!

Ronald Johnson Boxer soccer formation describes how the players in a soccer team are positioned on the field. Different formations are used from match to match depending on the skill of your opponents. If Ronald Johnson Boxer opponents are ultra defensive then of course a more offensive formation like 4-3-3 is preferable.
But if Ronald Johnson Boxer opponents are ultra offensive than a 4-4-2 formation is more preferable. For example the 4-4-2 describes the formation of playing with 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and two forwards/centers, and is the most widely used formation in soccer today.

I found this posting in a "YARD SALE". I was surprised at its condition and after watching it, I feel it was a great buy. I never heard that "THE ROCK" made this movie. I also loved all the different characters that are stars today. Southland Tales by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment SOUTHLAND TALES is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy. https://item.mercari.com/gl/m99871415532/ #wellnessjames #Entrepreneurs #Jamesthehealthycoffeeguy my Passion http://jameslockettrepairs.blogspot.com https://www.instagram.com/p/CMFV96cjXvG/?igshid=cea69fsylj5h

Southland Tales (2006)
Tumblr media
Southland Tales is an incoherent, dull, and frustrating mess that amounts to a big waste of your time. It's as if the first draft of two different films were stapled together, or it could be that writer/director Richard Kelly had so many "genius" ideas that he couldn't be persuaded to cut any of them. Some are actually genuinely interesting, but they're buried in a heap of dung that has no idea what it wants to be. A satirical dystopian comedy? an engaging high-concept science fiction film? a cautionary tale about censorship and totalitarian regime? Every potential avenue leads to nowhere.
The plot is an unintelligible mess that follows at least seven main characters. Set in a post-World War III United States, in the then-futuristic year 2008, action movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson) has been brainwashed and is being used in a smear campaign by a group of rebels to destabilize a presidential candidate. At the same time, the rebels are using one of two twin brothers, Ronald and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott) to push their agenda further. Officer Roland has been kidnapped and his brother has taken his place. Pretending to be racist and trigger-happy he is caught on tape and will expose the corrupt police system. There is also a plot about a mysterious, seemingly infinite source of energy dubbed "Fluid Karma" that threatens to tear the fabric of time and space apart, but is necessary because of an energy crisis; a new policy that keeps a close eye on the citizens to the point of censoring the internet; another about a former adult film star (Sarah Michelle Gellar as Krysta Now) that wants to create her own Reality TV Show; conspiracy theories and back stabbings.
It’s not even a well-formed turd. We get a long introduction about how the United States was hit with nuclear missiles in 2005, but there are no food shortages, no radiation suits to combat the nuclear fallout, and not even a single mutant wandering around. There’s a fuel “crisis” but we're just told this. We never see people stealing gasoline or being forced to take alternative modes of transportation. You might think that this element is to lead the audience into the super-secret “Fluid Karma” subplot but it has so little to do with the actions of the principal characters that I think it was thrown in just to simulate depth.
There are constant references to literary works, biblical quotes or scriptures tossed in with the kind of theoretical science fiction that Kelly previously explored in Donnie Darko. As icing on the cake, the film begins halfway through the story and not in the way you’ve seen before. Typically, a story will “hook” you by starting midway through an exciting action scene then flash back to show you how we got there. This story literally begins at part 4 of 6, the first three of which have been published in graphic novel form. Have you ever heard of a movie doing this? You have to do research in order to understand the film and we’re talking homework: 360 pages!
In the end, several plots have no bearing on the final “revelation” that is the conclusion of the film. Then, it just ends without telling you took place. You mean Parts 5 and 6 are actually going to be made? I just spent 2 hrs and 24 minutes getting pissed on, and I have to ask for more?
Southland Tales is moderately infamous. If you’re the kind of masochist that delights in watching the worst, most abysmal failures in Hollywood history just to make fun of them with your buddies on a Friday night like me, you’ll be thoroughly disappointed. There aren’t a lot of “so bad it’s good” moments, just one memorable quote and fewer iconic moments. The movie is exhausting, it sucks the life right out of you, leaving you desperate for any kind of genuine stimulation. With it’s inhumane running time, it takes so long to finish there’s just no way you will be able to gather the strength and mental energy to get up off your seat and find something better to throw in your DVD/Blu-ray player. Your only desire will be to turn off the TV, crawl into bed and die in your sleep. Southland Tales is without a doubt one of the dullest, most scatterbrained abstract films I’ve ever seen. You’d rather have a chimpanzee shave every hair on your body than flush your time down the toilet by watching this film. (On DVD, May 24, 2013)

32 years before Kingston, Jamaica-born, Ronald A. Blackwood broke the color barrier and became the first Black mayor of the city of Mount Vernon, New York, and 48 years before Richard W. Thomas, the youngest elected MV City Councilman would be elected as the youngest Mayor in Mt. Vernon, a former Grace Baptist Church pastor was paving the way as he became the first black to seek the mayoral seat in Mount Vernon. For those who do not know who I’m talking about, his name was Reverend Dr. Samuel Austin.
I came across Dr. Samuel while doing another story for Black History and was surprised this is not taught in the Mount Vernon City School District. Yes MLK, Frederick Douglass, Rosa Parks and other are important, but this is Black Westchester history, this is Mount Vernon history.
During this time a young loudmouth boxer from Louisville, Kentucky, born Cassius Clay was on trial for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War, a move and decision that was cost him his heavyweight championship belt and the prime of his career. Stokely Carmichael, a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), coins the phrase “black power” in a speech in Seattle. He defines it as an assertion of black pride and “the coming together of black people to fight for their liberation by any means necessary.” The term’s radicalism alarms many who believe the civil rights movement’s effectiveness and moral authority crucially depend on nonviolent civil disobedience. Dr. Austin’s bid for Mount Vernon Mayoral seat the Independent ticket shared the headlines with these events in Mainstream media outlets like the New York Times, black magazines like Jet Magazine and historical African-American newspapers like the Pittsburgh Courier despite the fact is not well-known n the city of Mount Vernon nor taught in the Mount Vernon City School District, this was major new nationwide.
This was just a few months before Thurgood Marshall was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Lyndon Johnson, becoming the first Black U.S. Supreme Court justice. A staunch opponent of discrimination based on race or sex, he would serve on the bench for 24 years. Months before Carl Stokes becomes the first African-American to be elected in Cleveland and Richard G. Hatcher becomes the first African-American mayor Gary, Ind.
This is a year before Dr. Martin Luther King, at age 39, is shot as he stood on the balcony outside his hotel room, in Memphis, Tennessee and a week later President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.
…a Negro Baptist minister, Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin, pastor of Grace Baptist Church at 32 S. Sixth Ave., in the downtown commercial area near City Hall, announced that he will file as an independent Democrat for mayor. Dr. Austin said he feels sure he can win the Democratic nomination and defeat his Republican opponent in the general election. Mt. Vernon has approximately 52,970 whites and 19,948 Negroes as residents. – Pittsburgh Courier – Saturday, April 22, 1967

The Rev. Samuel Austin, 63, died Friday (Jan. 23, 1998) in Los Angeles while attending a board meeting of the National Baptist Convention USA.
An internationally known evangelist and close friend of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. Austin suffered a heart attack after the church’s annual mid-winter meeting. He was attending as president of the 8.5 million-member denomination’s National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, which he had led since 1994.
For the last 24 years of his life, Mr. Austin had been pastor of the 3,000-member Brown Memorial Baptist Church in Brooklyn. In addition, he had served since 1993 as president of the Empire State Missionary Baptist Convention, which is made up of more than 500 Baptist congregations across New York State.
A native of Montgomery, Ala., Mr. Austin came to Buffalo as a child and was educated in the city’s public schools. He was a graduate of Buffalo State College and attended Canisius College and the Buffalo College of the Bible.
A gifted athlete, he set a number of records in basketball and track at Buffalo State and won a National Junior Olympic Championship.
Mr. Austin was only 19 years old when he became pastor of Buffalo’s Pilgrim Baptist Church in 1955. During the seven years he served as pastor, he founded the Buffalo chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
He also taught special education in Buffalo public schools.
A civil rights activist, Mr. Austin was a closely associated with King and participated in several marches and demonstrations with him and the late Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy. In 1964, Mr. Austin became pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. While there, he served as chairman of the Human Rights Commission and was the first African-American to run for mayor. During a long tenure at Brown Memorial Baptist Church, Mr. Austin founded and administered Transitional Residence Home for young men in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant area.
Mr. Austin has received awards from President Clinton, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes and Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden. He recently was awarded an honorary doctorate from American Baptist College in Nashville.
He was survived by his wife, the former Naomi Brown, and a son, Samuel Jr.
His services were held at noon Thursday, January 29, 1988 in Brown Memorial Baptist Church, 484 Washington Ave in Brooklyn, NY and at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 1988 in Pilgrim Baptist Church, 655 Michigan Ave., Buffalo. He is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetary, 1411 Delaware Ave in Buffalo, NY.
Black Westchester Magazine salutes Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin, a true Black Westchester and Mount Vernon legend!
BW Black History: Rev. Samuel Austin, First Negro To Run For Mayor. 32 years before Kingston, Jamaica-born, Ronald A. Blackwood broke the color barrier and became the first Black mayor of the city of Mount Vernon, New York, and 48 years before Richard W.

New world news from Time: The Deep History Behind Barack Obama’s Speech for the Centennial of Nelson Mandela’s Birth
When Barack Obama delivers the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg on Tuesday, to mark this week’s centennial of the late anti-apartheid champion Nelson Mandela’s birth, the moment will be a deeply personal one for the former president.
His speechwriter Ben Rhodes has said that Obama considers it to be the most important speech since leaving office, and Obama has written that his political awakening began with a speech against apartheid, South Africa’s official government policy of racial segregation: Addressing students briefly at an anti-apartheid rally on the campus of Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1981 was “the first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics,” he said when the former South African President died on Dec. 5, 2013.
But the speech will also have implications that stretch far beyond the personal. After all, the histories of the fights for racial justice in the United States and in South Africa have been closely intertwined for more than a century.
Here’s a look at the evolution of the overlap between the anti-apartheid movement and the U.S. civil rights movement, and what to know about the context that surrounds Obama’s historic speech.
American Inspirations and Early Cultural Exchange
The histories of both South Africa and the United States are deeply connected to stories of one race trying to dominate another. In the former, a minority of white colonial rulers exerted control over the black population in the region into the 20th century, with the apartheid regime persisting after independence; in the latter, slavery was followed by the passage of state and local “Jim Crow” laws that enforced racial segregation in many places.
So it’s no surprise that comparisons and exchanges between the two cultures are long-established.
Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, African-American missionaries and entertainers visited South Africa and black South Africans began to enroll at U.S. universities, both historically black colleges and universities as well as predominantly white schools. For instance, John Dube, who would become the first president of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1912, studied at Oberlin College in Ohio. He also wrote newspaper articles that kept black South Africans informed about what was happening with African Americans; black American publications such as the NAACP’s Crisis and Marcus Garvey’s The Negro World were available at libraries, and African-American sailors who docked at ports like Cape Town brought pop cultural influences with them. South Africans came to idolize African Americans actors and boxers like Joe Louis and Jack Johnson. (Mandela did too, as an amateur boxer himself.)
That exchange continued for decades, and cultural and political interchange often overlapped; for example, the famous South African singer Miriam Makeba married Stokely Carmichael, founder of the Black Panther movement, and Langston Hughes introduced many Americans to the facts of apartheid by publishing the work of black South Africans who couldn’t get published at home.
As black citizens of both nations struggled with discriminatory systems, progressive ideas spread between the two countries, even if the political activists who conceived them could not always be there to share them in person. In the 1920s, the South African government started becoming increasingly cautious about allowing African Americans into the country, launching a crackdown that would last until the end of apartheid in the early 1990s. The University of Fort Hare was established in 1916 to educate black South Africans so that they wouldn’t go to America to be educated, censors banned albums by Makeba and Harry Belafonte, and when Martin Luther King Jr. was invited to speak in South Africa by student groups in 1966 the government denied him a visa.
“The exchange that started in the 1890s made them [the South African government] nervous,” says historian Robert Trent Vinson, author of The Americans Are Coming!: Dreams of African American Liberation in Segregationist South Africa. “When blacks did come to South Africa, they were missionaries, apolitical blacks, or entertainment or sports figures there for a special reason [who] were closely followed by police.”
Some African-American civil rights leaders, like Malcolm X, made a point of traveling elsewhere in Africa and avoiding South Africa. Still, during this period leading into the 1960s, even though much work remained to be done in the United States, many South African activists found inspiration in what their counterparts in the U.S. were accomplishing.
“Black South Africans who couldn’t go to America idealized the African American position on some level, and saw them as racial role models who came out of hundreds of years of slavery and created some type of advancement for themselves — [whether] as sports heroes or writers — despite Jim Crow,” says Vinson. “Black South Africans were a generation behind in creating their own institutions.”
Nelson Mandela, Robert F. Kennedy and Civil Rights
In the 1960s, however, as the modern U.S. civil rights era reached its most famous moments, the dynamic between the two nations shifted.
A turning point came with the Sharpeville Massacre, when South African police on March 21, 1960, killed 69 black protesters in the town 40 miles south of Johannesburg. Shortly after, the government banned the ANC, which Mandela had joined in 1944. Among many in South Africa, there was a general sense that a new strategy was in order, moving away from the American model of nonviolence associated with the leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. (Interestingly, both King and Mandela were inspired by the thinking of Gandhi, whose own time in South Africa helped shape his thinking on nonviolence.)
“In that context, the ANC leadership, including Mandela, took a very difficult decision to say, ‘We tried nonviolent protests every which way for last 50 years and have gotten nowhere. In fact things have gotten worse. We have to go underground. Either we submit or try to fight back,'” says Vinson. Later actions that made headlines included the car bomb that killed 19 outside of the headquarters of the country’s Air Force in Pretoria in 1983 and the explosion at a bar in Durban that left three dead and more than 60 wounded in 1986. (The ANC later apologized for the deaths of civilians in these cases, which it said was the result of “insufficient training.”) But as early as 1964, Mandela delivered his ‘I am prepared to die‘ speech, which resonated even with King, who wrote shortly after that he realized nonviolent resistance of the sort practiced in the United States was not really possible in South Africa. King had also warned shortly after the massacre that the incident “should also serve as a warning signal to the United States.”
Even as their tactics sometimes diverged, American civil rights activists continued to link their struggle to the struggle of black South Africans, to show that what was going on in the American South was just one of many black struggles for equality around the world.
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) declared its ties to “the African struggle” during its founding conference in 1960, a nod to the continent-wide decolonization movement, and in 1964, for example, it sponsored a protest at the South African Consulate to the United Nations in solidarity with Nelson Mandela and other ANC members who were trial for acts of sabotage designed to bring down the apartheid regime. Martin Luther King corresponded with the first black African Nobel Peace Prize recipient Albert Lutuli, who won the award in 1960, and called him one of “the dedicated pilots of our struggle who have sat at the controls as the freedom movement soared into orbit.”
The ties between the two movements were further cemented in 1966. And at a time when many political black activists could not enter the country freely, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, who had become a white ally of the U.S. civil rights movement, delivered his famous so-called ‘Ripples of Hope’ speech to white students at the University of Cape Town on June 6, 1966. “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope,” he said, “and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
And more militant American civil rights tactics were also influential in South Africa. Anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko “developed the black consciousness movement directly out of Black Power,” says Peniel Joseph, Founding Director Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the University of Texas at Austin. Experts say the movement played a role in fostering a climate of discussion that empowered the students who protested mandatory classes in Afrikaans, the language of their colonial oppressors, in what’s now remembered as the Soweto Uprisings of 1976. What started as a peaceful protest ended with hundreds dead nationwide, and photography of the violence mobilized the international opposition to the regime.

The Anti-Apartheid Movement and Progress Made
Among white Americans, awareness of the inequality of apartheid regime in South Africa increased in the ’70s and ’80s, as President Ronald Reagan faced increasing pressure to impose economic sanctions on South Africa.
“By the 1970s, most of Africa is independent except South Africa, so South Africa looks strange. [People were thinking], didn’t we get rid of colonialism?” Vinson says.
Black activists urged Americans to boycott U.S. companies that did business in South Africa. Young African Americans were especially galvanized by the death of Biko, who died in a Pretoria jail cell after an assault by a white policeman. When Jesse Jackson ran for President in 1984 and 1988, he promised that as president he would restrict U.S. investments in South Africa and increase foreign aid to African countries. Awareness increased even more during the demonstrations that started outside the South African Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 1984, that, a year later, had lead to nearly 3,000 largely symbolic arrests, including 23 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, in what TIME called “one of the longest continuing demonstrations in U.S. History.” Protesters were joined by MLK’s widow Coretta Scott King, Arthur Ashe and Harry Belafonte, and even the children of Robert F. Kennedy, Rory and Douglas. Rosa Parks demonstrated outside the Embassy almost exactly 30 years after she became famous for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus.
“For black Americans, a response to South Africa is a response to them,” leading anti-apartheid activists Randall Robinson told TIME in 1985. “This is a test of our own democracy.”
The work began to pay off in October 1986, when Congress passed economic sanctions on South Africa. By the end of June 1987, more than 100 U.S. companies had left the country in the prior two and a half years, TIME reported. The dismantling of the apartheid regime would officially get under way in the early 1990s, when Mandela was released from jail and South African President F.W. de Klerk legalized political parties such as the ANC as long as they renounced violence as a tactic.
The regime officially ended with South Africa electing Mandela President in 1994. His election, to some African Americans in the U.S., represented the start of a multiracial democracy.
“There’s almost a reversal in the historical relationship,” says Vinson. “Now it’s African Americans looking up to black South Africans like Mandela, people who fought to overturn the worst racial domination in world since Nazi Germany and could replace it with a democratic, non-racial society. Mandela becomes this great example for what African-Americans could possibly do. We in America are still trying to work with the idea of multiracial democracy.”
Of course, the end of apartheid didn’t mean the end of racial problems. The transatlantic dialogue on how to work through them continues — Obama has played a major part in that effort, from the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders started by his administration’s State Department in 2014 to this week’s series of workshops and leadership trainings for more than 200 promising young people. And, as a former anti-apartheid activist who became the first African American President of the United States, he is himself an embodiment of this history.
“There’s a struggle going on!” he said in that first 1981 speech. “It’s happening an ocean away. But it’s a struggle that touches each and every one of us. Whether we know it or not.”

Speaking about Johnson and his overall toughness as a player, McDermott went as far to compare Johnson to a little known boxer known to some as Iron Mike.
“The thing that I love about Leonard is how tough he is, he’s like a little Tyson in terms of just the way he approaches the game. He gives us an edge on defense, which is important.”
Johnson seemed to like the comparison, especially since he grew up idolizing the boxer and his toughness relative to his overall size.
BILLS NEWS: Things we know this week about the Bills
“We’re both sort of short and stocky and aggressive. Mike Tyson was fearless. He knew every time he stepped in the ring, he was going to dominate somebody. So to be compared to that, that’s pretty good. But I have to uphold my part.”
Following the departure of former starter Stephon Gilmore to the rival New England Patriots this offseason, the Buffalo Bills had a big opening at the cornerback position. While Ronald Darby is the likely long term replacement for Gilmore, the team still needs to find an answer for the number two cornerback spot.
While one can assume that Tre’Davious White is the long term answer there, if he is not ready as of yet, then a short term solution will need to be found in order for the Buffalo Bills to be successful. That short term solution now looks to be Leonard Johnson.
