As a member of the Kree Imperial Starforce, you were used to bending at the knee to Yon-Rogg’s every command. Or, really, any command. It’s a nice technique -- the whole be a better you line, y’know? And you really listened at first, obeyed.

It came second nature in a place like this. 

But, with Vers now defected and rumors flying of supposed war-crimes around Hala’s capital, you found it a bit harder to follow the sandy-haired commander blindly. 

Everyone was second guessing their place in things. 

You were one of the lucky ones -- taken from a young age with an affinity for flying. They’d drilled you through the flight academy, ran you into the ground through the naval academy, and seven long solar cycles later? You were the pilot -- the one that the Supreme Intelligence assigned as Commander Yon-Rogg’s, and his elite squadron’s, personal valet. 

And you fucking hate it.

“Buckle up, folks.”

You miss Vers. She, at least, had a sense of humor.

You kick the hyper-drive into overtime, hull cutting through the clouds as you lock yourself in a manual nosedive. Your fingers fly above you, dialing up the orbital gravitation field -- you’re trying to make the G’s a little more bearable for aforementioned Commander and his small task force. 

Not trying too hard, though. 

One of the boogies follows, un-phased by the fast drop in altitude to the desolated planet’s surface -- some desert world on the outskirts of Kree’s far moon -- and proceeds to pop a round or two against the rear shields of your ship. 

You scoff. 

Yon-Rogg isn’t impressed.

“Get us out of here, soldier.”

“Trying, sir.”

“Try harder.”

You snarl as you punch it, not bothering to warn him of the sudden burst of G’s as you tear away from the planet’s surface and far into the atmosphere.

Once back on Hala, on solid ground, you’re not surprised at the reaming you’re given. It’s about time -- Yon-Rogg, finally back in action after a three week stunt in reconditioning -- hadn’t blown up on any of the special operatives yet. Back in the barracks, soldiers had been wondering when it would finally happen.

And here you are.

“We don’t play with our food, soldier.”

“My apologies, sir.”

“And what are those supposed to do? Track down the two Skrull transports we lost in the firefight? Need I remind you we are at war, solider?”

“No, sir.”

You can tell your sense of control is getting to him. All the more reason to keep your expression on ice and eyes set forward. He hates seeing his soldier practice the lessons he teaches, you think. He gets off on fixing the problems the brain-washing doesn’t. You don’t bother to drop your chin. Not today.

Yon sees it. His fingers snatch your jaw, his golden eyes set in a burning type of anger that should scare you. It doesn’t, because you can see the same sort of rebellion there. You and him? You’re one in the same.

His run in with Carol Danvers has him scared.

“Wipe that smug look off your face, soldier,” Yon-Rogg says finally, “Or I will myself.”

“Yes sir.”
