One year after the explosive defamation trial played out between ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard—becoming a grotesque pop culture spectaclealong the way—Depp is set to debut his comeback film Jeanne du Barry at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of the premiere, supporters of Heard have launched a campaign online using the hashtag #CannesYouNot, calling out the festival and Depp, whom Heard accused of verbally and physically abusing her repeatedly throughout their marriage. A jury found both parties responsible for separate instances of defamation, but awarded Depp $15 million, with Heard winning a $2 million judgment.

“If you support Cannes you support predators,” journalist Eve Barlow posted on Instagram. “Cannes seem proud of their history supporting rapists and abusers.” One slide of her post features Depp alongside photos of other Hollywood men with various abuse allegations made against them, including Roman Polanski, Harvey Weinstein, Woody Allen, Gerard Depardieu, and Luc Besson.

“We think it’s hypocritical for the Cannes Film Festival to have an anti-discrimination, anti-abuse policy, while opening the festival with a film starring Johnny Depp,” the operator of the Twitter account @LeaveHeardAlone told Variety. “The Depp v. Heard trial became the vehicle through which the backlash against the #MeToo movement went viral. Hollywood industries seem to be riding that backlash to return to the status quo.”

Also on Tuesday, Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, who is a Cannes juror this year and a historically outspoken advocate of Time’s Up, dodged a question about Depp during a press conference.

“You’re asking me that?” she responded when asked whether she’d attend the Jeanne du Barry world premiere. “I��m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically. You’ll see, I guess, if I will see it. And I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do.” (Depp’s film is not playing in competition at Cannes, and thus Larson, as a juror, is not required to see it.)

Another star who gave a similarly noncommittal response to the Depp debacle was Natalie Portman. When asked by Vanity Fair in May if she had an opinion on Cannes opening with the Depp movie, Portman responded, “I haven’t read much about that. But it can always be better. We will keep pushing for it to be better.”

I think part of what makes "Chinatown" such a heartbreaking and devastating movie is that...it honestly starts off as kind of a comedy.

Like seriously, there are a lot of good jokes at the start of that movie. There's the scene where the farmers let their sheep loose in Mulwray's presentation on the dam. There's the scene where Jake is sitting by the pipe and gets hit in the face by water. There's the scene at the mansion where the doorman (played by James Hong if I remember correctly, btw) just casually shuts the door in JAke's face like he's just some annoying salesman. There's poor Jake being basically just a glorified marriage counsellor who gets wrapped up in ridiculously convoluted city politics like a blue-collar Ned Stark. And there's also the kind-of offensive but also dang thematically important joke that Jake hears from his barber and then repeats to customers at his office. It's a pretty funny and witty screenplay for that first half or so.

And then the big swerve happens. And everything changes and is recontextualised, to the point where you can easily see Jake hearing the racist joke from his barber and then repeating it to his customers as a metaphor for generational cycles of violence.

And that's all I'm saying.

There was violent stalking Greg Ellis committed, he lost visitation rights to his children, and was violent to his family in which his ex-wife and children accused him of abuse. In 2003, he worked in another movie with JD, 3 movies in total with JD and they knew each other well. JD also wrote a forward to Greg Ellis's book, The Respondent, stated he sided with Greg Ellis, said Ellis deserves to tell his side of the story, and in JD's own words exactly said as, “If you’re trapped in the dungeon that is the family court system, The Respondent should be your constant companion."

October 16th: 1960s Horror | Rosemary's Baby

Rosemary's Baby was released in 1968 and was directed by Roman Polanski. Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) and her struggling actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes) move into an apartment with a less-than-stellar reputation in New York City. Things start out alright enough for the couple, but when Rosemary gets pregnant things start to take a strange turn. As her isolation increases and interactions with her neighbors become more unsettling, Rosemary begins to wonder if there's something bigger going on or if she's simply going mad.

Although psychological horror began to gain interest in the 50s, it wasn't until the 60s that the sub-genre truly began to take off. The majority of the reason behind that was thanks to Alfred Hitchcock, as he was one of the most prominent directors at the time with most of his films belonging to this sub-genre. Films like The Birds, Psycho, The House of Usher, and Rosemary's Baby became the staple of horror at the time, placing emphasis on tension and suspense rather than the shock value of jumpscares.
