In a vow of vengeance, Millard's mother mixes her son's ashes with a secret gingerbread cookie mix, which makes its way into Sara Leigh's bakery. It's my favorite time of year! Time to make my annual blog post about the best queer books I read in the last 12 months!
I've been doing this since 2017 so here, go back and see some trends: 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022
Now, you may look at the covers of this year's batch and think... Four out of five of those are... kind of intense looking. Are you okay. And the answer is no, but are any of us? These books will help! Probably!
The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson (lesbian, gay, bisexual, poly characters)
Ok so this book comes with like. All of the trigger warnings. Government sanctioned homophobia, racism, eugenics, graphic depictions of violence... read this one when you're feeling strong. It's a fantasy novel about characters who fight against those things in a world colonized by a profit-driven (and often, too familiar) empire. Brilliantly written, but steel your heart.
Twelve Percent Dread by @emilyscartoons (nonbinary characters)
Let's lighten up a bit, shall we? This one's a graphic novel that, as promised on the back cover, is fast paced and action-packed. Follow the adventures of Katie and Nas as they navigate jobs, adulthood, and the whims of one eccentric tech CEO who's going to change the world, one way or another.
The World We Make by @nkjemisin (ace, gay, lesbian, trans characters)
This one's a sequel, so sorry (not sorry) you're going to have to read The City We Became first. You'll love it, and you'll love this sequel. It's about New York manifested in human avatars, and it's about home and the power of being where you belong. The characters deal with some very real, familiar problems - and then they STOMP ON THEM WITH AWESOME GIANT CITY POWERS. Very satisfying read, highly recommend.
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (wlw characters & general gender shenanigans)
This one's the third in the series, also not sorry about this one, start with Gideon the Ninth. It's sci fi! It's necromancy! God is there and he's depressed. It's really hard to describe.
A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow (bisexual, lesbian characters)
A novella for when you are short on time or attention span and want a Sleeping Beauty remix told by an author who knows her folklore. Definitely have the second novella in the series, A Mirror Mended, on hand for when you finish - you'll want more.

Thinking about the locked tomb and how there is a story underneath the story. About how john and the lyctors technically fill the role of villain and supporting characters—at most, considering half of them are dead the whole time—and yet somehow when I’m learning about them it never feels like backstory but rather just another story, another part of this story. There’s a story underneath the story, and to we have to unearth it in order to come to any sort of conclusion for either. This story is ten thousand-odd years long.
#me#the locked tomb#tlt#gideon the ninth#this is one of the things that makes harrow the ninth so good I think#muir’s ability to write history as one long winding thread of lives touching other lives and having an effect on them#why is this sci-fi space opera with memes the most realistic story Ive ever read#bc it’s about relationships!!#Robin hobb does a similar thing with rote not that anyone’s asking#but it’s partly why I love both of them so much

Books of the Month: March 2024
A look back! I read more books in March than I thought I had, but it's getting busy in my world of finishing the academic semester/prepping for summer camp, so the reading-for-pleasure pace is slowing considerably. Here's some books from my March that I liked and would recommend!
Raven Black, by Ann Cleeves: First in the Shetland mystery series (I think there is a TV show based on these; from what I can tell there are several differences between show and book series). I've been reading a lot of mysteries that are a little shorter, and feel more quickly written? or something - they aren't bad, but don't take time with the narration. Cleeves writes thoughtfully about people and place and plot. I enjoyed it.
The Seas, by Samantha Hunt: What a funky little book. Is the young woman narrator psychotic, or is she actually a mermaid? Don't go in expecting a solid answer to that question. The book keeps you guessing.
Point of Honour, by Madeleine E. Robins: Not quite like other Regency mysteries, this is set in an alternate historical world where the Queen is regent (but her health declining). Meanwhile, Sarah Tolerance is a Fallen Woman who lives at her aunt's brothel, but prefers to earn her keep by being an inquiry agent who dresses in men's clothes regularly and is very very good with a sword (thanks to her deceased lover). Maybe you can see why I liked this book. Now I just need to get my hands on the third in the series (not at my library! or available through ILL!)
Nona the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir: I guess if you haven't read this yet I can't convince you to? I will say that I don't have the same exact kind of brain rot over the characters in the lesbian space necromancer books as some tumblrites (this is not an insult, I get brain rot over other characters, it's just very subjective) but I do find myself thinking almost obsessively about the plot threads and reveals and everything whenever I read these books. And tearing up occasionally. It's just good writing. And plot ideas/setting concepts that no one else has ever had in the history of the world.
#books of the month#book recs#raven black#ann cleeves#the seas#samantha hunt#point of honour#madeleine e robins#nona the ninth#tamsyn muir#look it took me a while to read nona but i wanted to wait a bit and then reread gtn and htn first

Ooo! Thanks for the tag! @virtie333 ( who 100% believes in couples saving the world together and then falling in love in the process)
Okay let's start. uumhm...
Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe
Robin Hood and Maid Marian
The Doctor and Rose Tyler
And
Captain Gregg and Mrs Muir.
show your 4 favorite ships and let your mutuals assume what your concept of romance is
Thank you both @randomfoggytiger and @agent-troi for the tag
Rey and Poe (obviously)
Mulder and Scully
Han and Leia
The fourth one was hard! It made me realize I don't 'ship' in my media as a necessity, which it probably why I get so peeved with people 'shipping' in almost everything. I've always enjoyed strong friendships and bonding over situations than romance, but when I do see something more, I run with it.
I almost chose Marc and Layla from Moon Knight, but I had to go with one I was even more strongly attached to years ago. I know a lot of fans didn't like it, but I thought they were perfect for each other.
Rodney and Jennifer
No pressure tags: @marieziffer, @jewelsrulz, @ophelialoveshandsomemen, @sperastella, @diplomaticprincess, @closerundone, @coneygoil, anyone else who wants to play!
#favourite ships#I have no one to tag really?? idk I'm bad at this#play along if thou wantest!#the ghost and mrs muir#doctor who#robin hood#anne of green gables

Written for @corrodedcoffinfest.
Let's Hear it For the Boy
Day #10 - Prompt: Pride | Word Count: 1000 | Rating: T | CW: Language | POV: Eddie | Pairing: Steddie | Tags: Famous Older Corroded Coffin, Pride Parade
Eddie tugs at the hem of his shirt, feeling more than a little uncomfortable.
"What's wrong?" Steve asks, showing up behind Eddie in the mirror.
"Well, for starters, it's mesh," Eddie says, "and I feel a little on display. I'm not exactly twenty-five anymore."
Steve runs his hands around Eddie's middle, hugging him from behind.
"You look damn good and you know it," Steve says, fingers pressing into the bare skin of his stomach under the mesh crop-top.
Eddie isn't so sure about that, but he appreciates the thought, anyway. He doesn't have time to argue, because the hotel room door bangs open, and Gareth is standing there.
"How hot do I look?" Gareth asks, and Steve laughs as he heads over to greet him.
"So hot," Steve says, and Gareth twirls around, like he's a six-year-old girl and not a forty-six-year-old man.
"Am I the first?" Gareth asks, and he is, nobody else has turned up yet and they are supposed to leave for the parade in ten minutes.
Corroded Coffin was asked to be grand marshals of this year's Pride parade, and they decided to go for it. The community embraced Eddie long ago, and it's about time he really did something to pay that kindness back.
Gareth is wearing the sparkliest eye makeup Eddie's ever seen, and Eddie lived through high school in the 80s. He could put Chrissy Cunningham to shame, Eddie thinks, and feels a pang in his chest.
Before he can dwell on it, the door swings open again, and Goodie's there, decked out in all leather, his hairy belly on full display.
"Well, don't you look beary sexy?" Eddie teases, grinning ear-to-ear as Goodie tips his leather muir cap.
"You can call me daddy if you want, big boy," Goodie says, and Eddie would really rather not. And, using Eddie's turn of phrase against him, is honestly dirty pool.
"I think I'll pass," Eddie laughs, but he's impressed Goodie's gotten into this as much as he very clearly has. "Where's Jeff?"
"There was a pants problem," Goodie says, and that's as much as he chooses to elaborate, before adding, "Robin's helping."
And Steve laughs, which makes Eddie smile. He's sure they're both getting the same mental image of Robin trying to dress Jeff. Too tight pants? Split up the ass? Eddie doesn't know, but he's sure it's hilarious, either way.
"We can't be late, we're the grand marshals," Gareth says.
"We won't be late," Steve assures, and Eddie's sure that's true. Steve Harrington never lets them be late to anything. Hasn't yet, in nearly thirty years. He's not gonna start today.
They stand on the street corner and look out over the sea of color. Rainbow flags waving in every direction. Everything, and everyone, is just so bright. It's a vast change from looking out over the crowd at a Corroded Coffin show where the majority of clothing is just shades of blacker than black.
But this is full color. Everything about it is, and it's fun in a different way. A rainbow in every direction he looks. They're branching out, and Eddie is determined to embrace that. There's no reason not to, he figures, and they were invited for a reason.
Because they were all wanted here.
The float they're supposed to get on is garish and bright, but everyone seems excited to see them, so Eddie smiles back. Accepts the hand offered to help him up onto the platform. Steve is with him, and with Steve, he can do anything. Even this.
Jeff's stuck zipper problem fixed, Robin is now hugging person after person, and it's her they have to thank for this whole idea, Eddie knows. Without her, they'd have never been asked. Eddie's absolutely sure about that. And that's fine. This isn't really his scene. But if they want him to participate, wave a rainbow flag, whatever, he'll do it. It's the least he can do for the community that accepted him, and his friends, when that wasn't always a given.
They didn't grow up in a time or place where being this out and proud was ever even conceived of, let alone done so publicly. So it's nice to see the change that has occurred in just a few decades of his lifetime. Things are different now, and that's pretty damn cool.
He may not want to be so front and center here, but being asked, being seen as some sort of gay icon, is flattering. He can't deny that.
The metal band, filled with members that are all some sort of queer, wasn't always destined to make it. They did anyway, beating the odds that were stacked against them.
They built up a whole community around themselves, and later a fandom, honestly, that loves them for exactly who they are.
The music is pumping off the float, and it feels straight out of Babylon. The thumpa-thumpa, alive and well. Gareth's found some sort of rainbow streamers, and he's waving them above his head.
Goodie has to be sweating buckets in all that leather in this heat, but he's standing at the edge of the float with Jeff, throwing out beads like it's Mardi Gras. Only, these are in rainbow colors. Jeff is wearing jean shorts that are cut so short, Eddie's scared anyone beneath him might be getting a free show.
Steve's standing on a chair, clapping and screaming with the music, creating a chant, "Let's hear it for the boy!"
Eventually, this ends with a mic in Eddie's hand as he climbs up to the top of the float, where he can see and be seen.
He raises both hands over his head and waves, and hears the screaming pointed back in his direction.
He finds Steve's eyes, blows him a kiss, and tips his head back and laughs.
"Happy Pride!" Eddie screams into the mic, and the crowd goes wild. It's not a Corroded Coffin show, that's for damn sure, but he feels very loved.
If you want to write your own, or see more entries for this challenge, pop on over to @corrodedcoffinfest and follow along with the fun! 🦇

Hey quil, I trust your book taste, can you give me some reccs perchance? I’m not picky, whatever your faves are
of course! you'll have seen some of these before in my dragon recs list, but I'll throw in some other ones too :)
A Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons; My favorite book series of all time. I can't tell you what it's about because discovering that is part of the plot. Genuinely changed how I think about fantasy and writing. This post goes into a tiny bit more detail but I cannot stress enough it only covers like 2% of the story it makes me FERAL you just need to trust me and stick it out through the confusion (trigger warnings)
Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators' Revolution by RF Kuang; young Robin is taken from his home in Canton to England when his family dies, his knowledge of Cantonese invaluable in a world where language, via silver bars, can literally become magic. The British Empire is working to collect all it can for its own gain, but as Robin grows up and learns more of how the world works, how it wants to use him, the more he finds it shouldn't be this way. A beautiful story on loss, oppression, imperialism, injustice, and language's role in identity. I cried.
The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan; Isabella, now an old woman, recounts how she became the most renowned dragon naturalist in the world--overcoming misogyny, maneuvering through politics, and more. Follow her from childhood to present day around the world, studying dragons in the field. This story has wonderful characters, critiques the "not like other girls" trope, has beautiful relationships (including platonic!), a lot of action and intrigue alongside the fascinating science, animalistic dragons, and!! SO many pictures! the artwork it's seriously incredible. Love this series
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd Jones; around Colbren, the dead don't stay dead. Ryn, a young gravedigger, agrees to take the mysterious visiting mapmaker, Ellis, to the abandoned castle, because she needs the money to support her two siblings and in hopes of stopping the worsening curse. Ellis, found near the woods as a babe, hopes to find some remnant or clue to who his family was, who he was. together, they must face the walking dead, find the abandoned castell where this all started, find the answers, and find themselves. I adored it's tone, characters, how it handled death and grief, everything. it reads like a fairytale in the best way
The Martian by Andy Weir; Mark Wattney's an astronaut on Mars when a storm hits, forcing the mission to return to earth prematurely--but he doesn't make it to the shuttle in time, they presume him dead, and leave devastated. now alone on Mars, Wattney's got to figure out how to survive--and how to get in contact with earth and let them know, hey, uh, I'm still here guys. one of my favorite hard sci-fi books of all time. Wattney is such an entertaining, intelligent guy; he'll have you laughing, then on the edge of your seat as Mars tries its best to kill him. this one also comes with a movie :)
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn; Bree's in an early-college program, grappling with the very recent death of her mother. when she stumbles into creatures that shouldn't exist, magic, it starts to look like her mom's death might not have been an accident. she finds a secret society of the descendants of king arthur + the round table, inheriting their powers to defend the world from a different plane--and Bree needs to find out what they know. but getting in is difficult as a Black girl, especially when their guard dog is convinced she's a demon. a beautiful story on grief, Black generational trauma, racism, identity, and more. we're eagerly awaiting book three this spring <3
The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir; of course I had to include this one--tonally similar to ACOD in that you WILL be confused <3. The Emperor Undying needs necromancers; Gideon doesn't give a shit, but the girl she's been raised alongside, Harrowhark, the heir of the house on their far away planet, doesn't give a shit that Gideon doesn't give a shit. She contracts Gideon to serve as her guard, her cavalier, as Harrowhark travels to the Emperor's planet to compete to become one of his right hands. Except as the competition progresses, something's...wrong. fatally, lethally wrong. people keep turning up dead, and if they don't figure this out, they could be next.
I'll stop there, but I hope you find something you like on that list! If you (or anyone else) have any more specific requests or guidelines for recs, feel free to send them :)
#book recs#book recommendations#quil's queries#nonsie#these are in no particular order except for acod at the top#i think i gave all of these five stars?#okay yeah. these are all personal 5 star reads#look upon them and realize things about me <3

Fav Books with Lesbian Characters
Oh ho ho it is Lesbian Visibility Week?? We have books for that.
There are SO MANY good books with lesbian characters out there these days! In my day, we had to walk 15 miles in the snow uphill both ways for just a lingering look between two ladies that might be interpreted as sapphic. Now we have CHOICES. Here are just a few of my favs:
The Wayward Children Series (particularly Down Among the Sticks and Bones and Come Tumbling Down) by @seananmcguire
I'll stop reccing Wayward Children when everyone has read it. The whole series features queer characters, but Down Among the Sticks and Bones (book 2) and Come Tumbling Down (book 5), featuring horror twins Jack (lesbian mad scientist) and Jill (I won't spoil it) are particular favorites of mine. And don't be intimidated by how many books are in the series - they're novellas!
All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages edited by Saundra Mitchell
Speaking of not having time for full-length novels, how about an anthology of short stories? It's so wonderful to have story after story centering queer characters, especially for historical fiction fans. You'll find plenty of wlw rep in several iconic eras, from the 1700s to the 1950s.
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir
Yes, yes, we've all heard the lesbian necromancers in space tagline, but a catchy tagline isn't the only reason people rave about this book. The storyline is absolutely wild, and so is the writing style - a dizzying blend of baroque gothic intensity and modern linguistic turns of phrase. And that's before you even get to whatever is going on in book 2 (second person???? How? Why??) It shouldn't work, but it does. There are murders, conspiracies, politics, duels, horrors beyond human ken, and yes, lesbians. Start with Gideon the Ninth.
The Great Cities duology by @nkjemisin
New York City is awakening into a Great City, and each of its boroughs has manifested a human avatar. There's a big cast of characters, but you'll never feel confused about who is who, or bored with one particular viewpoint. The character work in this book is phenom. There's also Lovecraftian horrors, very little romance, the best found family on the Eastern Seaboard, and a lot of love for New York. If you liked Neverwhere by @neil-gaiman, you'll like this. Start with The City We Became.
