Yes! I do write some things, I have a few of my fics from the past year on Ao3. I wrote some Bluefour (the name I gave to the 4 boys: Trip, Searles, Rawlins and Sharts) fics as well as some Trearles, as they are my main interest. I had also written a short but fluffy Shaforbes, because well...its the most popular ship in this small little fandom xD

There's some fics on Ao3, though they are mostly Shaw/Forbes. Don't get me wrong, I love that, but we really need some more angst (and Trearles someone please write for Trearles, God I love them so much) please I beg ALL of youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

As for my headcanons...boy do I have a lot from my obsession last year. My first one I think about is ADHD Trip. This one I could elaborate on more but that's for a different post ":) Then ASD Searles, I also think he's Achillean! Actually you know what here are myBluefour sexuality hcs:

Searles - Gay (Claims the male physique is very attractive, has gotten some weird looks. Never shown interest in women before and sees them as friends rather than potential partners. Just a man-liker in general)

Trip - Also gay, just doesn't realize it ┐(´ー｀)┌

Sharts - Bisexual. Just a curious little guy

Rawlins - Heteroflexible, I liked the idea of him in the original script as having a wife and children, and tbh it's too cute. I do see him forming a very very close bond to another man, one that can be considered romantic.

Some of my other headcanons include a post-Fort Wagner Colonel Forbes, he sort of grows depressed and other angsty things, but he gets through it trust! Also, hc that he is just an alcoholic.

Sharts and Rawlins father-son dynamic very true in my heart. I also hc that they both survived Fort Wagner (Trip and Searles die, just as meant to happen), after that they grow even closer.

I have so many other headcanons, I just can't remember them all. I had them all in a chat with a person I no longer associate with, so a good chunk of the written stuff is gone :( But I'm sure I'll remember when I watch the movie again.

Horace Gifford (1932-92), just like his peer Andrew Geller, designed a significant number of houses on Long Island or better Fire Island (which he also helped transform) that suited the leisure gay lifestyle developing there. The houses Gifford designed are modest in size but rich in formal and spatial inventiveness and showcase the architect’s design talent. At the same time they occasionally reference Gifford’s mentor Louis Kahn’s architecture. Predominantly built in the communities of The Pines and Cherry Grove the 60 beach houses Gifford realized in just twenty years between 1960 and 1980 were often, but not exclusively, tailored to the wishes of gay clients. Gifford, also gay, was a dashing fellow who not only charmed his clients but sometimes also entered into relationships/affairs with them.

In 2013 Metropolis Books published Christopher Bascom Rawlins’s „Fire Island Modernist - Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction“, a fantastic and page-turning monograph that, as Clifford Pearson wrote in Architectural Record, „…is not some musty tome from the shelves of a university library“. Instead it is more of a double-polar exploration of the architect’s work and life that focuses as much on the architecture as it does on the particular circumstances it came to fruition in.

That Gifford later died due to complications related to AIDS lends the narrative a bitter dimension as it also sheds light on the hedonistic and careless life on Fire Island that should later be overshadowed by the dreadful disease. But despite this somewhat bitter ending the book lives up to its title and in carefully selected photos and materials plastically displays the seductive qualities of Gifford’s houses. And we have to thank Gifford’s long-term partner Robert Greenfield who placed his heirs under the obligation to preserve the architect’s archive. Thanks to this and Bascom Rawlinson’s efforts the present monograph is an enchanting and important book on a wonderful architect!

As Reformation Day Approaches...

Many will wish to talk about Martin Luther. Which makes sense because he famously nailed the 95 theses to the church door at Wittenburg on October 31st.

But what better time to commemorate all of the OTHER important figures and reformers of the Protestant reformation? Of whom there were many.

Wikipedia lists 284 people burned in England under Queen Mary I, as she attempted to consolidate her power. Her new laws declared anyone teaching against Catholic doctrines to be guilty of heresy and subject to the death penalty. The Catholic church has never denounced these murders committed by its members on its behalf.

These laws affected famous and regular people alike. Over time I may make a series of posts with more detail about some of these persons.

Arabian Nights

Arabian Nights is a 1942 adventure film directed by John Rawlins and starring Jon Hall, Maria Montez, Sabu and Leif Erikson. The film is derived from The Book of One Thousand and One Nights but owes more to the imagination of Universal Pictures than the original Arabian stories. Unlike other films in the genre (The Thief of Bagdad), it features no monsters or supernatural elements.

This is the first feature film that Universal made using the three-strip Technicolor film process, although producer Walter Wanger had worked on two earlier Technicolor films for other studios: The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936) at Paramount and the 1937 Walter Wanger's Vogues of 1938 for United Artists.

Plot (it may contain spoilers)

In ancient Persia, the young women of a royal harem read the story of Sherazade, unfolding the film's story. Sherazade, a dancer in a wandering circus, captures the attention of Kamar, the brother of the caliph, Haroun al-Rashid. Kamar's infatuation influences his attempts to seize the throne from Haroun and make Sherazade his queen. His revolt fails, and he is sentenced to slow death by exposure, but Kamar's men storm the palace and free their leader. Wounded and forced to flee, Haroun chances upon Sherazade's circus and is spotted by the young acrobat Ali Ben Ali. Aware of Haroun's identity, Ali hides him in the circus. Later, upon awakening from his injuries, Haroun beholds Sherazade and falls in love with her.

Meanwhile, Kamar assumes the throne, but Sherazade is not to be found. He orders the captain of his guard to find her, but a scheming grand vizier, Nadan, approaches the captain with the order to make Sherazade 'disappear.' After finding them, the captain sells the troupe into slavery. When the captain is found out, Nadan murders him in order to conceal his treachery. Haroun, Sherazade, and the acrobats escape the slave pens, but are found by Kamar's army and taken to a tent city in the desert. Kamar reunites with Sherazade and proposes, but she has fallen in love with Haroun instead. Nadan, recognizing the caliph, uses this knowledge to blackmail Sherazade into helping him remove Kamar from the throne, in return for safe conduct for Haroun out of the caliphate. In secret, however, he plans to have Haroun killed once he has crossed the border.

Upon learning of this insidious scheme, Ali and his fellow performers rescue Haroun, who then decides to free Sherazade with the help of the acrobats. But Haroun and the others are quickly captured, and Sherazade finally learns his true identity. Kamar engages Haroun in a swordfight, while the acrobats set fire to the tents; and the arrival of the caliph's loyal troops, summoned by Ali, triggers a massive battle. In the end, as Kamar prepares to deliver the deathstroke to Haroun, Nadan assassinates Kamar. But as he prepares to do in Haroun, Ahmad and Ali interfere, forcing him to flee. Nadan is stopped by a thrown spear and dies inside a burning tent, leaving Haroun, Sherazade, and their loyal friends to celebrate victory.

Mary & George, a new period drama which will chronicle the affair between King James I and George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, promises to be one of the most highly anticipated shows of 2024.

In fact, the romance between the two is referenced in Casey McQuiston's Red, White, & Royal Blue novel, wherein the fictional Prince Henry writes, "I feel that James I, who fell madly in love with a very fit and exceptionally dim knight at a tilting match and immediately made him a gentleman of the bedchamber (a real title), would take mercy upon my particular plight." In a fun turn of events, actor Nicholas Galitzine stars as both Henry in Red, White, and Royal Blue and as the "very fit knight," a.k.a. George, Duke of Buckingham.

Mary & George is adapted from The King's Assassin by Benjamin Woolley, a nonfiction book that details "the conspiracy to kill King James I by his handsome lover, the Duke of Buckingham."

I don’t mind a juicy coincidence to get a movie ignited, but this story depended upon them so much, perhaps it should have been called It Must be Fate. Netflix categorized this as a Christmas movie, because it begins and ends a year apart during the holiday season. But in between it is a romance. Nothing against Meryl Streep’s character, but Frank (De Niro’s character) lost interest in his attractive, supportive, and funny wife and good mom to their kids in favor of an attractive, funny woman who could lead to his losing his kids. That’s true love, I guess. As for Streep’s Molly, her husband didn’t seem like a prize. But I think the story should have shown those spouses a bit more. More depth. Still, it was fine. Okay, move along, nothing more to see here.

The Impact of Post-World War II Films on Modern-Day Cinema

Some major changes seen in the films produced after World War II can be observed in modern-day films. For example, post-war Hollywood realism, styles from the 1960s and realistic documentaries are relevant to films of the 21st century. 

Regarding post-war Hollywood realism, the 1948 film He Walked By Night demonstrates realism after World War II since the settings and characters depicted in this film are true to life. This film takes place in Los Angeles and tells the story of a police hunt for the elusive and clever criminal Roy Morgan, a man who committed multiple crimes and killed a police sergeant in the late 1940s. In addition, the setting of this film demonstrates realism as the homes the characters live in depict middle-class suburbia. This can be seen by the image of the average house that Roy boards himself up in that the milkman visits. As said by Rober Brustein in his text from Film Quarterly, “In limiting its world to the domestic scene, the realistic movie provides the adolescent with scenes that he can recognize” (Brustein 31). In other words, viewers can relate to the homes and day-to-day lives of the settings and characters shown on screen. 

Another realistic element of this film is the characterization of each real-life person depicted in the film. For instance, Robert Rawlins, the police sergeant who is murdered by Roy, is shown driving home from work eager to see his wife before his untimely death. A film that relates to post-war Hollywood realism is the 2011 film Moneyball which tells the story of Billy Beane, the manager for the Oakland Athletics. Similar to He Walked By Night, this film is also based on a true story. Often, modern-day films will depict true stories as honestly as they can, which is why realism is prevalent in modern-day cinema. A realistic element of Moneyball is the shot of Billy Beane driving home from work in his beaten down pick-up truck just as Rawlins drives home to his wife in He Walked By Night. These elements, while small, add to the realism strewn throughout the films. 

Another element of Moneyball that illustrates Hollywood realism is the choice to use a fictional name for the supporting role of Peter Brand instead of the real name of the man the character is based on. This is also seen in He Walked By Night as some of the names of the real people in the story are changed to protect their privacy. On another note, a historical event that can relate to post-war realism is the 2008 Great Recession as the true story of this economic downfall was realistically depicted through the film The Big Short. In this way, this film also serves as an example of realism in modern-day cinema. 

Though realism can still be seen in today’s films, the trends of the 1960s are also prevalent in today’s cinema. For background knowledge, some of the trends in the 1960s represented a change in films after World War II. The styles of directors such as Billy Wilder catapulted cinema in a new direction that is still evident in current-day films. For instance, Billy Wilder’s 1964 film Kiss Me, Stupid was influenced by Wilder’s air of cynicism. This film is about a songwriter named Orville Spooner who wants to provide for his beautiful wife and who’s friend Barney plots a scheme to sell one of their songs to Dino. One scene that shows Wilder’s infusion of cynicism in the film is the scene of Orville spying on his wife out of paranoia. Regarding his style of cynicism, “Wilder does not believe that innocence can survive unscathed. He does not believe that faith and trust are a reasonable basis for human relationships. His films chronicle the corruption of innocents, the fall from purity” (Winter 12). In this way, Orville’s general outlook is cynical as he cannot trust that his wife will remain faithful. 

Another scene that evokes cynicism is the moment when Orville and Barney pitch the song they wrote to the famous singer Dino, played by Dean Martin, at the gas station. This scene shows cynicism since the juxtaposition of Dino in a black suit next to sweaty Barney at the gas station undermines the audience’s confidence in Barney and Orville’s ability to persuade Dino to buy their song. As this style of cynicism was a trend perpetuated by Wilder in the 1960s, this trend is still relevant to  21st century films. For instance, the 2016 film La La Land brings a fantastical story down to earth with a realistic, not-so-satisfying ending. In this way, films such as Kiss Me, Stupid and La La Land use a trend of cynicism to base stories in reality. Additionally, La La Land serves as an example of cynicism since the plot revolves around the love story of Mia and Sebastian who, despite being deeply in love for many years, do not end up together. Two moments from La La Land that point towards a cynical view are the scene when Mia and Sebastian argue at the dinner table and when Mia and Sebastian sit on a bench to talk and realize they are growing apart. 

Another change in cinema after World War II that is seen today is the prevalence of realism in documentary films. For example, the 1960 documentary Primary which depicts the campaigns of John F. Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey during the Wisconsin primary election uses realistic elements that are utilized in modern-day documentaries. For example, the extensive use of b-roll and minimal use of narration relates to the format of modern-day documentaries. To demonstrate the true-to-life elements of Primary, this film reveals the “personalities and politics of the campaign trail as they had never been seen before…Primary’ offers a compelling glimpse into the early career of one of the world’s most captivating leaders.” Realistic elements of Primary can be seen by the shot of John F. Kennedy interacting with children and the shot of Hubert H. Humphrey speaking to a crowd of farmers as these two moments illustrate realities of a political campaign. With this, a historical event that relates to realism in modern-day documentaries is the campaign of the Russian politician Alexei Navalny as the story of his controversial campaign was depicted in the 2022 documentary Navalny. Overall, films released after World War II influenced the styles of modern-cinema since realism, trends from the 1960s, and realistic documentaries are common among today’s films.

Page 5. ---- Coal Shipment Arrives by Boat - Fred Bush Released From Custody ==== NAPANEE, June 20 - A collision between two cars occurred near the Sans Souci camp, which was investigated by Traffic Officer Rawlins. One car was in charge of Ross K. Campbell, R.R. Kingston, and the other car driven by Harvey Belcher, of Napanee. The latter car was coming out of the camp while the other car was proceeding to Napanee. The left front fender of Campbell's car came in contact with the right rear fender of Belcher's car. The damage to Camp-bell's car was about $15 and to Belcher's car about $50.

Coal Shipment The barge Cadwell arrived in the Napanee River on Monday with 590 tons of coal for the Napanee Fuel and Supply Company. This is the third shipment which has reached Napanee during the past week.

James E. Johnston, daughter, Miss Jean, son Percy, and friend Miss Taylor, all of Peterboro, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Milsap, Adelpha Street. Miss Jennie Johnston is remaining for a few days.
