Cactus flowers, Joshua Tree National Monument (now National Park), California, 1994.
When we lived in Seattle, we tried to take an annual late winter trip to a sunny place, usually a week in Southern California. Sadly that tradition was broken when we returned to ole Virginny in the mid-aughts, and, although we went to SoCal for a wedding last winter, no such trip in 2024. I miss the desert!

Here in California we have a lot of environmental protections other states don’t. They really help the people and natural environment to be healthier and happier here. But there are a lot of places in the state where air and water pollution are huge problems. All over the state there are pockets with extremely bad air quality, giving hundreds asthma, making them sick more often, causing cancer rates to exceed the norm, and even shorten people’s lives! Same with water, there are many places in the state where the water that should be clean for people to drink and wildlife to use is so polluted it causes serious diseases and health problems. There are places like San Bernardino county where the tap water is of such poor quality people have to avoid drinking it whenever possible. That’s why there is a potential solution coming up in a proposed amendment to the California state constitution. It could make it so all these pollutants are made illegal, forcing those with power to be rid their harmful business practices and improve California. This amendment will literally save lives, but not enough Californians know about it. That’s why we want to spread the word as much as possible before November when the vote happens. We want as many people to be aware of it and to know why supporting it helps them and their communities.
The California Constitution declares various inalienable rights of the people. The right to enjoy and defend life and liberty, to acquire, possess, and protect property, and to pursue and obtain safety, happiness, and privacy. These are things that cannot be taken away from us. This measure would amend the California Constitution to declare that the people have the right to clean air and water and a healthy environment. The people shall have the right to clean air and water and a healthy environment. The people must have the right to a clean air and water and a healthy environment

Feb. 7, 2024 - KTLA
Record-breaking rainfall has drenched Southern California over the past four days, leaving the entire region soaked and causing extensive property damage.
According to National Weather Service reports, some of the highest rain totals in the entire region were in Los Angeles County.
Downtown Los Angeles saw the most rain over a two-day period since 1956, NWS said, adding that nearly half of the average seasonal rainfall for Los Angeles fell on Sunday and Monday alone.
Rainfall totals for Southern California communities can be found below:
Los Angeles County
Cogswell Dam (13.86 inches)
Topanga Canyon (13.48 inches)
Bel Air (13.04 inches)
Sepulveda Canyon at Mulholland Drive (13.02 inches)
Woodland Hills (12.62 inches)...
See article for more rain totals from Ventura, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties!

PSA: A scholarship for LGBTQ and Nonbinary Film/TV critics of color in Southern California!
A wonderful organization I am on the board of has partnered with Rotten Tomatoes to award a scholarship to three talented LGBTQ and/or nonbinary critics of color in the Southern California.
So far, we have mostly gotten submissions from trolls and racists, and we really want to award some fresh writing talent!
“The Crimson Honors scholarship is open to qualifying community or state college students in the Southern California area who are seeking a career in entertainment criticism. A select panel of GALECA members will review and consider all student submissions of film/TV criticism and/or commentary featured in a campus media outlet in 2022. After deliberation, the panel will honor three students who demonstrate excellence in their craft. The grand prize winner will receive $3000, with two finalists each collecting $1,500. All three winners will also receive $100 Fandango and VUDU gift cards to watch movies in theaters or at home, and a complimentary yearlong GALECA membership, with opportunities to meet editors and Advisory Board members in the group. “

Hello community, my name is Adele and I am reaching out to you with an urgent need for support. I am currently facing a situation where my civil rights were violated and I was assaulted and illegally arrested by a Riverside County Sheriff officer. This has caused great emotional distress, but it has also caused a significant financial burden on me and my family as I seek justice.
youtube
A little back story of the incident... On July 3rd, I was enjoying my backyard with my family, laughing and talking, which caused my Karen neighbor to call the cops as it interrupted his sleep. Not knowing there was a cop outside my home, a friend went to leave and when he opened the door, saw a cop about 20 feet from the door. He then closed the door to come and get me to deal with the visitor. (I wanted to clarify this as there are many people assuming I opened the door to this cop, I know better.) At that time, the cop decided he had every right to rush my door, open it, and enter without consent or a warrant. As I made my way to the front door, I saw the cop inside my home. Not very happy about this, I tried to get him to step outside to talk to me and figure out what his reason for being at my home was. He refused, exerted his power of a badge and a gun to try to intimidate me and power trip me. He had no regard for me in my home, the law, my civil rights, or my family. He claimed he "owned my home" now and was very unprofessional in every aspect. As I expressed my frustration, raising my hand, he decided that was his opportunity to gain the power he needed and assaulted me, throwing me up against the wall, forcibly pulling me out of my home, and arresting me. Absolutely no suspicion of a crime, or crime committed, ever. He was there on a noise complaint. I was arrested and am now facing resisting arrest/obstruction charge. This "officer" had 4 cameras, knowingly recording the whole entire interaction and still behaved this way. Can you imagine what these tyrants do when there's no cameras recording? This is absolutely unacceptable and deplorable. It is sad that we have to learn to never open the door for the people that are supposed to be out protecting us. Instead, they are the violators and criminals, dangerously, with badges and weapons.
I am now left to navigate the legal system on my own.
I am in need of legal representation, for the civil and the criminal parts of this situation, to hold those responsible, accountable and to ensure my rights are held. The cost of hiring a lawyer who specializes in cases of police misconduct and civil rights violations is substantial, and unfortunately, I do not have the resources to cover these expenses on my own.
Your support will help go directly to:
Legal fees for specialized attorneys in criminal and civil rights against this cop
Court costs for my criminal case
And all other necessary legal expenses to build a strong case
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS:
This is not just about ME: It is about standing up against injustice and ensuring that those who are entrusted to protect and serve do not abuse their power! By supporting me with this, YOU are helping to make sure that my voice is heard and that justice is pursued. I will fight until I have exhausted every avenue of resources to get this disgusting, unacceptable misuse of power recognized with an attempt to change.
I will continue to use this unfortunate, disgusting situation to bring awareness to what is happening in more communities, not just our own. This kind of misuse of power needs to be addressed and recognized. We need to stand up and make sure we protect our families and our rights. This cannot keep being brushed under the rug and getting a slap on the wrist. We need to abolish Qualified Immunity!!! These animals that behave like this need to feel the consequence, personally and financially. We the people don't deserve to have to pay for their egotistical, tyrannical behavior and we have to fight for what is right!
I will keep you all updated along the way on the progress of the case and how your contributions and support are making an impact. Your support means the world to me, and I am deeply grateful for your help throughout it all.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering a donation. Together we can stand up for JUSTICE and make a difference!!
Also the more calls we make using our voices, the better!
