In hindsight I kind of find it a little weird that the toucan from the first Rio film (I've forgotten his name) was extremely invested in Blue ( Blu?) and Jewel's "love story" despite him only knowing them for a short amount of time. It feels rather invasive. He even calls Blue and Jewel "Romeo and Juliet" after they have their first argument, merely calling them melodramatic and obviously not paying attention to the extreme cultural and lifestyle divide between the two of them that was evident even then.

I think you mentioned him trying to play mediator/get them back together in your Rio2 Divorce AU? I might be misremembering though.

Oh yeah, Rafael was weird as hell in the first movie and downright awful in the second, pushing that "happy wife, happy life" garbage on Blu at every opportunity. My personal overthinking-it-but-maybe-not-really headcanon is that his relationship with his wife makes Blu and Jewel's look like a damn Norman Rockwell painting...that she's not just emotionally abusive to him, but physically.

Because let's face it, Eva's pretty much canonically the mom in this, and a bird on top of that.

I hc that Rafael is firmly of the mindset that men can't be abused and that their dynamic is fine and is about 90% okay with being pecked and having things thrown at him when their arguments get way out of hand. It's that last 10% that he tries to avoid thinking about, hence the romantic guru shtick.

In my thing, when Blu and Jewel split up, he gets way too involved in it and makes every effort shy of kidnapping them and chaining them together again to fix it. Probably even convinces Eva to talk to Jewel. It's definitely more for his benefit than either of theirs, something I can sort of see him realizing towards the end, although I don't think he'll ever admit this.

When Blu starts dating Lola, Rafael's supportive, but in an uncharacteristically hands-off way. Blu's surprised by this and half-jokingly comments on whether he's going to try and give him some advice, maybe micromanage what he should say to her. Rafael just smiles sadly.

"Nah...I think you've got this."
