WRESTLING’S MAIN EVENT: March 1990
WRESTLER OF THE MONTH
BY JOEL EISENBERG PHOTOS BY JOE ZANOLLE
WELCOME BACK HOT ROD! – “ROWDY RODDY PIPER” DECLARES WAR ON THE HEENAN FAMILY
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper is back in the WWF and up to his usual mischief, with the solid backing of the fans. He has declared war on “Ravishing” Rick Rude and the rest of the Bobby Heenan Family. Heenan has a few tricks up his sleeve as well and has promised a big surprise for Piper. What is it? Can Piper handle the challenge Heenan will confront him with??
He came. He saw. He conquered. Twice. It certainly took him long enough, but Roddy Piper - ‘Rowdy Roddy’, ‘Hot Rod’ or ‘Prime Time’ to you and me – has finally returned to his roots in the wrestling ring and his timing, as usual, couldn’t be better. It’s ‘Weasel Hunting’ season.
While Rowdy Roddy may have had one of the most fabled careers in sports before his initial full-time World Wrestling Federation tenure over six years ago, Vince’s league just cemented the impending legend. Here, he’s credited with the birth of “Wrestlemania” – stemming from an incident where rock superstar, Cyndi Lauper, appeared on his controversial ‘Piper’s Pit’, thus indirectly initiating an all-time classic feud with perennial champ Hulk Hogan. Piper, the most despised individual to ever step foot in a ring in those days, bitterly warred also, and most notably, with ‘Coconut’ Jimmy Snuka, a current partner of his at the 1989 'Survivor Series’ as a team member of ‘Roddy’s Rowdies’ (!). Hot Rod disappeared for a few months to film the forgettable “Body Slam” With Captain Lou Albano – remember him? – then returned to find his cherished ‘Pit’ replaced with the late, and missed, Adrian Adonis’ ‘Flower Shop’. Another feud developed, Piper won handily, and he’s since become one of the most popular grapplers in history. Talk about your turnarounds!
[Rick Rude is first to fell Piper’s wrath against the Bobby Heenan Family]
Roddy Piper officially retired during the record-breaking “Wrestlemania 3” extravaganza, defeating Adonis at the Pontiac Silverdome. A few more films (John Carpenter’s “They Live” was the number one box-office attraction in the country for two consecutive weeks) and some years later, he returns to the WWF in an integral, special appearance for “Wrestlemania 5”, humiliating both Brother Love and Morton Downey, Jr. in what can best be described as a bizarre series of events. A co-hosting spot on cable’s weekly ‘Prime Time Wrestling’ followed, replacing the ousted Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan, whose proceeding ill fated “The Bobby Heenan Show” ultimately lasted less than one month. Mr. Gorilla Monsoon, always mindful of maintaining order on his set. Reluctantly allowed Mr. Heenan a commentator’s post in the isolated Studio B, as Piper remained with Gorilla in Studio A. You got this so far?Tensions arose as Bobby, seeking company, brought on “Ravishing’ Rick Rude as his guest. Together they taunted the proud Piper, not a smart move, who left his post to infiltrate Studio B. However, Heenan was there but Rude had gone to Studio A, insisting he was looking for Hot Rod. ‘Prime Time’ Piper did all but get on his knees imploring Rude to stay where he was. Piper arrived back in Studio A as Rude argued with Monsoon and hit Rick with his kilt belt from behind. Both men were physically restrained but the “Ravishing One” did manage to throw water in Piper’s face. Aaah yes, but another day in the life…
[Piper can handle all of Rude’s tricks.
All the rules are being ignored.]
“Summer Slam 1989”. Meadowlands Arena, New Jersey, Inter-Continental Champ “Ravishing” rick Rude has the advantage over former titleholder, The Ultimate Warrior, as the enthralled crow rises to its feet. The arena explodes as an unannounced Hot Rod walks methodically to ringside to approach Rude, who returns the less-than-welcome favor with his patented swivel hips routine. Piper proceeds to turn his back to the champ and flips up his kilt for a rather premature “full moon”. Thus with Rude distracted, Roddy leaves, Warrior revies and defeats the champ, and poor Rude and manager Heenan blame it all on the innocent one who wears hardly anything under his kilt.
[Piper posts Rude right where it will hurt him the most.]
Roddy makes his first appearance on “The Blubber Love Show’ since ‘Wrestlemania 5”, teaching the self-absorbed preacher a much needed lesson in ‘hygiene’, in yet another classic scenario. He washes his hair, he brushes his teeth – through it all Love manages to keep hold of the microphone – until Prime Time himself is assaulted by vengeful Rick Rude, who blinds the Scotsman with a bottle of mouthwash for his eyes, followed by a ‘Rude Awakening’.
Through it all, “Prime Time Wrestling” undergoes a format change. Heenan returns to Studio A with Monsoon, Piper is comfortably nestled in Studio B. Words fly back and forth weekly and Roddy promises to destroy The Heenan Family one at a time. So far, he appears to be winning the mental war with Rude, anyway. When Rick recently, in a nationally televised event, less than impressed a less than turned on female recipient of his ‘Rude Awakening’, Roddy got her to join him in the ring minutes layer following his own match. He grabbed the house microphone and asked what the problem was. “Bad breath” was the humiliating reply. Piper retorted, “Honey, you’ve felt the Rude Awakening. Now it’s time for the ‘Rod Awakening’.” He kissed her. He got on top of her on the mat, still going at it. He stopped, smiled and stood up. She had momentarily passed out. In a few moments she stands, somewhat disoriented, and exited the ring arm in arm with her new hero.
It’s somewhat obvious that “Rowdy” Roddy Piper is back in a big way in the WWF. He has always been the man that makes things happen, the straw that stirs the drink, if you will. He has cleanly pinned, since his return, the likes of Randy Savage and Heenan’s charge, Haku. Rude is getting his now. That leaves Andre and…does Weasel have any surprises up his sleeve? Personally, I’m nagged by a persistent suspicion that perhaps a certain ‘Superfly’, after all he’s getting increasingly vicious in that ring as of late, and Piper was never really paid back for that coconut incident… A wait and see attitude is the best for this one…

By Choice or By Blood pt. 12
The bustling gym was filled with the sounds of grunting, punching, and the rhythmic squeaks of feet on canvas. Mika stood ringside with Jason Jeopardy, the newest addition to the WVBA legal team. Nearby, Dudley Bruce, the fight choreographer for Gemma's upcoming movie "The Birmingham Butterfly," listened in, his expression one of curiosity mixed with professionalism.
Jason, in his distinct New York accent, was explaining to Mika, "Gemma's personal legal team has been scouring this contract trying to find a way out of this fight for two days. But, they hit a brick wall. Gotta tell you, the WVBA contracts are pretty much bulletproof."
Mika's eyes widened in realization. "So, the fight's definitely going ahead? They’re gonna have me fight an actress with no practical training or experience in a real match?"
"It's not just that," Jason continued, tiredly rubbing his temples as if he’d like to be anywhere else. "The WVBA doesn't do one-offs. This fight contract means she's officially part of the roster now."
Dudley, slightly taken aback by this revelation, stepped forward. "Pardon me, I couldn't help but overhear. What exactly do you mean by 'part of the roster'?"
As Jason started to respond, Gemma arrived. Her stride was brisk, but she was obviously tense as she caught the tail-end of Jason’s explanation, “To have a sanctioned WVBA match, you must be a boxer on the active WVBA roster.”
“Excuse me,” Gemma spoke up as she approached ringside, “I didn’t sign up for the match, much less to be on any roster.”
Jason turned to face her, eyes tired but voice firm, “Miss Golden, your duly appointed representatives sign a WVBA fight contract on your behalf. Part of that includes a standard WVBA Boxer’s contract which lasts for a period of no less than one year and means that you are subject to future bouts as determined by the league. In layman’s terms, you’re a boxer now.”
The actress’ reaction was explosive. “I am an actress, not a bloody prizefighter! I’m playing a boxer in a movie, not becoming one! Were I to get hurt, it would jeopardize the entire production. Absolutely not! I won’t do it. I absolutely will not do it!”
Jason looked her square in the eyes, totally unimpressed. "Please let me be crystal clear, Miss Golden. You are contractually obligated. Your studio knows it. Your lawyers know it. If you fail to meet those obligations, you're in breach of contract and that will jeopardize a lot more than a production.”
Gemma began seething as Dudley subtly moved himself to her side. Jason continued, “The WVBA has the finest training facilities and training staff in the world. It is my recommendation that you make use of them." With that, he excused himself, leaving and muttering under his breath, “... damn primadonnas.”
“What was that?” Gemma yelled after him. “What did you call me, sunshine? Maybe I should practice on your…”
Mika, stepping forward, rested a hand on Gemma's shoulder, her voice calm and reassuring. "Don't worry, Gemma. I've got a plan."
Gemma spun around to face Mika. "And tell me, does your plan involve pummeling me senseless?"
Mika chuckled and smiled warmly. "Well, yes, but… but it also involves you possibly doing the same to me."
Before Gemma could retort, Dudley interjected. "Respectfully, Miss Mika, what exactly is your plan? We have less than two weeks before the fight."
Mika's eyes sparkled with excitement and determination. "Until the fight, Gemma and I will be training partners. Dudley, you'll supervise and coach Gemma, of course. But we’ll train together and spar regularly. That way, Gemma will be as comfortable in the ring with me as possible before the fight. Think of it as practicing for improv. It’ll be a real fight, unrehearsed, but you’ll know your partner."
Gemma's expression shifted from anger to confusion. "I don’t understand. How is beating me up before the match supposed to help me?"
"Miss Golden, just a moment,” Dudley stepped in, his tone patient yet firm. "The idea is certainly unorthodox, but it has merit. Normally, I would advise against training with your opponent, and vigorously protest the very idea of sparring them, as it would give away information. But in this case, you have nothing to give away."
“Have you both lost the plot?” Gemma looked at Dudley incredulously.
Dudley looked at Gemma with a stern, but confident expression, “Not at all. This gives you the chance to see and learn how your opponent moves and attacks, to see the holes on her defenses. Put simply, you have nothing to lose and everything to learn.”
“And Gemma,” Mika looked her in the eyes, nothing but warmth and trust in her gaze, “you confided in me your worries and fears about this. I’m not going to take advantage of you. I will do everything I can to help you and get you ready for our fight. I told you in the cafeteria, I’ll give my all when the bell rings on fight night, but I don’t want to beat up someone that can’t defend themselves.”
Gemma took a deep breath, the reality of her situation finally settling in. She searched Mika’s eyes, then looked to Dudley, before finally nodding her agreement, her voice resigned. "Fine, let's do this."
Mika's enthusiasm was infectious as she clapped her hands together. "Great! Let's get started then!"
While apprehensive, Gemma knew deep down that she had to embrace this challenge. In less than two weeks, she would be in a ring, fighting a trained prizefighter, with the world watching. Like it or not, she was no longer just playing a boxer in a movie. She would have to become one for real.

court sketch artist dives into the details
Tumblr media
BOOKS
Power of the pastels
From quick draws and celebrity trials, a court sketch artist dives into the details
Jane Rosenberg keeps her “go” bag by the front door.
She never knows when she’ll get the call and have to head to court — not to argue a case but to draw it.
For more than 40 years, Rosenberg has traveled the country and sat ringside for some of the most dramatic high-profile trials, including those of Bill Cosby, Bernie Madoff, Harvey Weinstein, John Gotti and Donald Trump.
In her new book, Drawn Testimony , she describes some of the costs of sitting that close to the action.
“I have drawn scenes, including a man’s execution in the electric chair, that have left me feeling guilty, washing and rewashing my hands to expunge something more than pastel dust,” she writes.
Court sketch artists are a dwindling breed.
But they remain vital because photographers aren’t allowed into many courtrooms, and artificial intelligence isn’t quite ready to take over.
It’s a stressful and often wrenching job.
“Oh no, it’s not happy,” Rosenberg said.
Rosenberg must work quickly to memorize the details of her subjects and capture them as precisely as she can using messy pastel pencils.
She wears plastic covers over some of her fingertips, which have worn down over the years, and sometimes uses binoculars.
The hectic nature of the job hasn’t kept critics at bay.
Writing in Slate, Luke Winkie called her work a combination of “majestic” and “bizarre.”
Then came the 2015 trial over a scandal known as “Deflategate,” featuring NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
Rosenberg, who is not a football fan, was one of the few living Americans who didn’t know who Brady was.
When she saw him in the courtroom, she writes, “I couldn’t quite work out what defined him, what made that face Tom Brady … he was all chiseled and cropped, smooth and almost disconcertingly featureless.”
Tumblr media
The drawing she produced had a certain Herman Munster-like quality, and the internet went mad.
Rosenberg had her 15 minutes of infamy, appearing on television and radio shows to explain her creation.
In between Brady’s first and second appearance in court, Rosenberg studied his visage like a quarterback watching film.
“For that two weeks, I lived and breathed Tom Brady, sitting in my studio as sketch after sketch of him piled up around me,” she writes.
Although she was not completely satisfied with it, her second sketch was good enough to get a simple thank you from the seven-time Super Bowl champion.
Despite the pressure, Rosenberg says: “I love what I do. I love drawing. I love being paid for drawing, and I love having a front-row seat at the most exciting trials.”
During our exchange, she explained her technique, her brushes with fame and how she continues to do what she does.
This interview has been edited for clarity and length.
How did you become a court sketch artist?
After college, I did portraits for tourists in Cape Cod.
Tumblr media
But I got tired of that and I came back to New York and went to a lecture of the courtroom artist Marilyn Church, and I thought, wow, I’d really like to do that.
I had some lawyer friends who took me to night court, and I put together a portfolio.
One day the court officers let me sit in the jury box with two other artists [during an arraignment].
I did my sketch and I went home and I thought, I’ve got to try to sell this.
The case was Craig Crimmins, who was later convicted of murdering a violinist on the roof of the Metropolitan Opera House. I sold it to NBC.
After that I kept getting calls. Next was the trial of Mark David Chapman, who was convicted of killing John Lennon.
Tell me about a typical day in the courtroom, if there is such a thing.
I will get a call from a news service and run downtown with my kit and a change of clothes — I tend to wear a lot of dark-colored clothes because I make a mess and I don’t wear an apron.
Hopefully I’ll be the first one there and choose the best seat and set up all my art supplies.
I have to finish the sketch right then and there.
I have to memorize my subject right then and there.
I never bring the art home.
When I’m done, it goes right on the news.
What’s the fastest you’ve ever had to complete a drawing?
If it’s an arraignment, like the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, very fast.
Six or seven minutes.
But sometimes arraignments last a long time.
Like the Trump arraignment for the hush money trial.
There were a lot of arguments before they actually arraigned him.
Then the prosecutor read the 34 counts out loud, and that took some more time.
When I sat down, I started drawing all the court officers, the security — I’ve never seen that much in the courtroom. They were lined up in every row.
And then Trump walked in, and I drew him. I did one sketch. I didn’t finish it, and then suddenly he spoke into a microphone and said, “Not guilty.”
So I took out a sheet of paper, because now I thought, I have to draw him speaking into the microphone.
But as soon as I had this blank sheet up, I looked at him and now he was turning and facing the prosecutor, kind of glaring at him, and I got to see him from a front view. So I decided, I have to get this face.
How often do people on the stand acknowledge you?
Occasionally. It depends where I’m sitting. Though when I was on Trump’s civil fraud trial, which was in a state court, they put all the artists right up against the rail.
Whenever anybody entered the courtroom, including ex-president Trump and Don Jr. — whoever walked in, they walked in right behind us and could see what we were doing. Donald Trump started to acknowledge me, because he had seen me in D.C., he’d seen me in Florida, and so now I’m a familiar face. So he started to say, “Hello, how are you?” Sometimes he just mouthed a greeting, or I would get a nod.
But one day it was Don Jr.’s turn to testify, and he didn’t say anything to me at first. But during a break, he walks by me and says, “Look what they did to Sam Bankman-Fried, they made him look like a superstar,” and showed me a drawing on his phone from that trial, insinuating I should do the same for him.
I said: “That’s fake. That’s not even what he looks like.”
It was an artificial-intelligence sketch. And another time he walked by and said, “Make me look sexy.”
You have witnessed some emotionally harrowing moments. I’m thinking, for instance, of Susan Smith, who drowned her children in 1994, and the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, Derek Chauvin’s trial. How do you cope with the weight of all this?
I’ve witnessed some horrible, horrible things, but I have to stay neutral, to the best of my ability. During the trial of Susan Smith, my child was the same age as her children. I remember listening to the testimony of how she strapped them in the car seat and let them roll into the lake. I was heartbroken. And then had to listen to what happens to a body when somebody drowns. I was horrified. I was actually crying. I had to be careful that the tears didn’t land on my pastels because they would have ruined them.
How do you find the strength to go out and do it again? What do you do to unwind?
I meditate every day, twice a day. And I have been doing that every single day since 1973. I’d say I’m addicted to the meditation at this point, because if I don’t, all I can think about is: I need to meditate. So, that centers me and gets me going and ready for the day in court.

How much did your senior prom dress cost you? Not much, I think it was just around 5k? My school even imposed a maximum amount we should only spend on the dress, and had each of us show the receipts for it to prove we didn't go over. Quite controlling, but honestly also made sense considering not everyone was well off so I don't mind it in retrospect.
What dreams have stuck with you since childhood? I've always wanted to see a WWE show from ringside. And to travel to Chicago.
Have you ever been in a serious romantic relationship? Sure.
Did you ever take your dog to school? Just once. I brought Kimi in since it was graduation photo taking day and I wanted him part of my portraits.
If you had had a baby in high school, what would you have named him or her? 100% I would have named them April if I had a girl. For a boy, Owen was always a top pick of mine after Owen Hart, even in high school.
If you had a baby now, what would you name him or her? I'd go for a first and second name that would make their nickname Mia.
Have you ever seen someone throw up on a plane? Nope.
Do you get motion sickness? Yeah, they're frequent and bad.
Has God ever healed you of anything? If so, what? Um, no.
What is the most boring church you have ever attended? All of them?
What is the most lively church you have ever attended? None of them.
Do you find church fun or boring? Boring and personally unnecessary. Also thinks very highly of themselves.
What do you hate the most about summer? The heat, the humidity.
Which part of your body is the most muscular? I never work out lol but if anything, probably my arms? I'm used to doing chores at home and carrying a lot of heavy boxes and other things at work.
Did you ever take Latin in school? No. They tried teaching us French at one point but it didn't catch on.
Which major holiday is closest to your birthday? It is almost always usually days away from Easter Sunday.
What is your favorite Japanese name? Mitsuha, Michiko, Akiko.
Have you ever ran a cash register? I have not.
Did you collect Bratz dolls when you were younger? Not dolls, but I liked Bratz nonetheless and had other stuff with their branding on it. I had Bratz boots, tops, skirts, lunchboxes, and bags.
Do you think your mom is attractive? Yes, she's pretty and also looks very young for her age. People are usually surprised when they find out she's over 50.
What was the last thing that disappointed you? Uhh very minor but I was looking forward to learning from this mini documentary I found on YouTube only for it to have commentary/a clear bias right off the bat.
Do you like the feeling in your stomach on a big drop on a roller coaster? It's the worst. I experienced it once when I gave the Singapore Universal Studios kiddie rollercoaster a chance – never rode one again, lol.
Skeletons or scarecrows? Idk, skeletons I guess?
Do you own pumpkin earrings? Nope.
What computer game did you used to play all the time? That bartender game where you had to mix drinks, only for the dude to hate like 99.9% of the mixes.
When was the last time you read a book? Around a month ago when Drew had me read this leadership self-help book.
Would you allow your children to date prior to 16? (assuming you want any) That's fine. What I'd prioritize above all is communication, so it would be great if they can open up to me about this sort of thing so that I could at least help where I'm needed.
What was the last restaurant you made a reservation at? a mano.
Which app on your phone do you tend to get the most notifications from? Mail or Viber.
What is something you gave up on after many failed attempts? Writing stories.
Do you watch political shows? I've only seen The Crown. Generally, I find the genre interesting but just never have the time to watch any of them.
Do you play any fantasy/roleplaying games? What? Nope.
Do you like salami? Not really.
When was the last time you ate meat? This evening, alongside spicy Chapaguri noodles. So spicy my tummy has been feeling like its own ring of fire the whole evening :( I have milk now which is helping, but the burning sensation is yet to go away completely.
What was the last hot drink you drank? I can't remember. I usually skip on hot drinks because I do not find the 'hot' in hot drinks enjoyable.
Have your parents met your boyfriend/exes? Yes.
How about your boyfriend’s parents? Met them? Yes, we were legal with her parents too.
Do you know how to say I love you in at least 4 languages? I love you, te amo, saranghaeyo, mahal kita.
Do you find the sound of a cat’s purr relaxing? Yes!!! I will admit I never really knew or bothered to learn the ~science behind purring, then we got Max who purrs like 80% of the time and it's one of my favorite things to listen to.
Do you know your mum’s first pet’s name? Nope.
Would you ever want to be famous? If so, for what? The most I'd ask for is to be associated with someone famous, like being their best friend or whatever lol. I wouldn't want to be the famous person myself.
Would you ever get a heart tattoo or your back? No.
What fruit can’t you stand? All of them, but most especially bananas. Or mangoes.
Do you know anyone autistic? Yes.
How about someone bipolar? Yeah.
What do you consider private to you? My peace and healing.
Name somebody you know who deserves a better life than they have: My eldest cousin, mom's side. He and his brother.
Name something that you’re good at but don’t like: Folding laundry.
Name something that you’re bad at but DO like: Singing (when I'm alone).
Name somebody who has tried to help you and ended up hurting you: My mom.
Name a date that has a lot of significance to you: April 7th.
Name something in your life that was a blessing in disguise: My breakup.
Name something that you’ve done that would be considered rebellious: Attending political rallies.
Name something you wish you had enough money to do: Fully pay for a condo.

Figured out a friend of mine unfriended me and unfollowed me on everything and I suspect it's got something to do with our last conversation and I think she thinks it was wrong of me to post the dog show photos that I took?? But like they weren't very good anyway. And there was no ringside photographer at the show. And nobody said anything to me about not being allowed to be there. There was an official photographer there taking posed photos at a little pop-up studio, but there was nothing ringside. Plus it's not like I was selling the photos. I wasn't taking away from anyone else by posting those. But she mentioned to me it's considered bad form to do that without permission depending on the show and what kind of official photographer they have. Which I get. But, again, nobody said anything to me when I was there, very obviously taking photos, and there wasn't anyone else doing it ringside...
So like it sucks that she felt she had to end our friendship because of that. Or at least that's my best guess, because I can't think of any other reason she would have done it. I really valued her friendship so this.....sucks.

does anyone have a favorite roddy piper promo/moment?
i think mine is from the July 10, 1982 episode of Mid-Atlantic where he was to defend his mid-atlantic heavyweight championship against jack brisco under the condition that wahoo mcdaniel and ricky steamboat leave the studio. they also essentially had to raise $10,000 to get piper to wrestle (piper: i got a bit of WAAHOO'S MONEY *chuckles* i got a bit of STEAMBOAT'S MONEY *chuckles*). after wahoo and ricky leave, piper gave his title and 10k to a ref at ringside and literally screamed at him saying:
"IF YOU TRY AND LEAVE THE STUDIO, I'LL KILL YOU, MISTER!"

RINGSIDE WRESTLING : JANUARY 1997
Ringside Roundup
All the News from Coast-to-Coast
We would like to welcome everyone to our Ringside Roundup. Since our last issue quite a bit has happened on the wrestling scene. For starters the nWo continues to grow. Depending on who’s counting, there appears to be eight members in the organization: Hollywood Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Ted DiBiase, the Giant, “Six” (formerly known as the 1-2-3 Kid), the “fake” Sting and the new CEO of security, Vince.
If Vince looks familiar it’s because in his former life he was Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard, Virgil. More members are expected to be added to the nWo in the very near future. The Nasty Boys will be nWo members shortly and both Bam Bam Bigelow and Bret Hart have been mentioned as possible nWo members as well.
[ECW head honcho Paul E. Dangerous, along with wrestlers Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, Taz, Bubba Ray Dudley and Pitbull #2 were at ringside for the start of the WWF “In Your House” pay-per-view, but they didn’t last long. By the end of the first match, WWF security had asked them to leave. Is this the opening salvo in another inter-promotional war?]
Hart incidentally is a free agent and has yet to resign with the WWF. Meanwhile, the Hitman is being wooed heavily by the nWo. They have reportedly offered him a three year contract at a million dollars a year as well as a guaranteed three-movie deal with one of Ted Turner’s movie companies.
Right now Bret is living in an apartment in Los Angeles and he is taking acting lessons. In addition he had been going on auditions and making the rounds of the TV and movie studios. Although Bret would like to make it in Hollywood on his own, Ted Turner’s deal sounds awfully enticing.
[Will Bret Hart resign with the WWF or join the nWo?]
Just when the nWo and WCW have begun to fight it out, the WWF and ECQ have also begun an interpromotional war. At the recent “In Your House” pay-per-view from Philadelphia the ECW contingent was in full force. Sitting in the first row were Tommy Dreamer, the Sandman and Paul E. Dangerously while in the lodger were Saturn from the Pit Bulls, Bubba Ray Dudley and Taz. As soon as the ECW guys entered the Core States Arena, the ECW chants begun. Then the moment the pay-per-view went on the air the Sandman, Tommy Dreamer and Paul E. began to taunt Savio Vega.
[“Zillionaire” Ted, who seems to be providing the New World Order with much of their financial backing, shares a moment with RINGSIDE editor George Napolitano.]
At one point the Sandman even threw beer in Savio Vega’s face. Finally when the ECW crew refused to stop they were escorted from the arena. Obviously their outburst gave ECW the international exposure that they have been craving. If nothing else ECW received more exposure out of this than they ever imagined. Paul E. owes “super fans” Charlie Vladimir and Chris big time for giving up their usual first row WWF seats so that the ECW guys could sit there.
[The Nasty Boys are rumored to be nWo-bound]
First there was a fake Stinge. Now there are a fake Diesel and Razor Ramon too! While the “orginal” Diesel and Razor Ramon, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall respectively, are now doing their thing in WCW as part of the NWO as “the Outsiders,” the WWF has replacements to reprise the roles of Diesel and Razor in the WWF. Playing “Diesel” is Glenn Jacobs better know to WWF followers as the awful Issac Yankem. The Razor Ramon character is being played by Rick Bogner: AKA Big Titan in Japan.
During an ECW appearance since Titan came out as “Slice and Dice” Ramirez and in all honesty he was a better “Razor” than Razor! With Brian Lee still around, chances are good than he may reprieve his role as the Underfaker, I mean the Undertaker, should the real Undertaker leave for WCW when his WWF contract expires in a few months. One really knows what the WWF hopes to prove by having two other wrestlers portray characters that have since left the company. On the face of it, this does appear to be a very stupid move, but it may actually work out to the WWF’s advantage as the fans will surely boo the two new guys unmercifully. If they get the reaction that they are hoping to, the WWF will have created two new characters that should get a lot of negative reaction.
[Playing “Diesel” these days is Glenn Jacob’s better know to WWF followers as the awful Issac Yankem]
The September 23 editions of Monday Nitro and Monday Night Raw were sensational.  The highlight on the first hour of Nitro was the WCW tag team title match between Public Enemy and Harlem Heat. When the final verdict was rendered, Public Enemy was declared the new WCW tag team champions by controversial referee Nick Patrick.
During the second hour the nWo took WCW hostage. The nWo took control of the set and ran the entire show. The Giant was the ring announcer; “Billionaire” Ted DiBiase, Hall, Nash, and Hollywood Hogan served as the color commentators; while new CEO of Security, Vince, held Eric Bischoff in check the entire hour.
On Raw, meanwhile, Marc Mero defeated Faarooq to win the vacant Intercontinental title and the WWF introduced their new “Razor.”
Besides having WWF Intercontinental champion their are new WWF tag team champions, too. On September 22, at the Philadelphia “In Your House,” Owen Hart and the British Bulldog defeated Billy and Bart of the Smoking Gunns to win the tag team title. Now the Gunns are at odds with Billy feuding with Bart. Meanwhile, the devious Sunny is the real reason that the Gunns are at odds.
[The lovely Kimona Wanalaya is among the talent being used by the new AWF!]
Brian Armstrong, better known to WWF fans as the Roadie, has returned to the Federation. On his return, Armstrong revealed that it was he and not Double J who actually was the voice behind Jeff Jarrett’s song “With My Baby Tonight.” This time around however, Armstrong will be wrestling and not working as someone’s gofer.
Doug Furnas and Dan Kroffat made their ECW debut and wrestled Sabu and Rob Van Dam in an incredible tag team match. After the 30-minute time limit had expired neither team had captured a fall. Look for Furnas and Krofatt to wind up in the WWF.
Look for the American Wrestling Federation to make its 1996 debut on your local television station within the next few weeks, On September 15, AWF Champion Tito Santana, Sgt. Slaughter, Road Warrior Hawk, Missy Hyatt, Kimona Wanalaya, Ken Resnick, Rico Suave and CEO Paul Alperstein were in New York at the All Star Cade to announce that the AWF were coming back on the scene. With the way WCW and the WWF have been drawing in the past several months it looks like there is room for another organization. That’s all for this issue. Look for us again on your favorite newsstand next month!
Until then, see you at RINGSIDE!

Charlie reminded Kerry Morton that Starboy isn't a member of the Southern 6 and that they had something good going in CORE before Kerry brought Silas Mason and Alex Taylor here. But Starboy said this isn't about Morton choosing The Southern 6 over their faction. And this isn't about Starboy choosing Marcus Mathers over Kerry Morton. Starboy said it's about him choosing himself. With that Charlie walked off the set where Marcus Mathers could be seen waiting for him.

Tumblr media
Tim Bosby vs. "King Of Jersey Shore" Zack Clayton Tim Bosby defeated Zack Clayton with a rip cord lariat.
- Shaw Mason and Hunter Holdcraft made their way to ringside after the match. Bosby asked Mason when this was going to stop. Mason said that last week during a tag match against The Andersons, Hunter Holdcraft knocked a foreign object out of Brock Anderson's hand, and instead of picking that weapon up Hunter kicked it out of the ring. Mason said that yes, they almost lost the match because of the time Hunter spent making that decision, but that in that moment Mason gained some perspective on the value of doing things the right way. Shaw Mason admitted that while he still believes Bosby cheated in their first match, he couldn't prove it, so during their match on Thanksgiving Shaw planted the foreign object on Bosby to frame him. Bosby thanked Shaw Mason for finally telling the truth, but that he also has something to confess. Bosby said Shaw was right, he did cheat during their first match and he also cheated in his match against Tom Lawlor. Shaw Mason told Bosby that he admired his honesty, but what he admired even more was his competitive spirit. Mason said when he saw Holdcraft debate picking up that weapon but deciding not to, and that all that accomplished was almost costing them the match, he realized that he doesn't want to be partners with some goody two shoes that is afraid to do whatever it takes to win. Mason said that he wants the match on Christmas night against The 37KAMIINA, but that he needs a man with guts like Bosby re-join him in folkstyle so they can beat the 2023 Trios Kingdom winners. Hunter Holdcraft interrupted, saying that he has no idea what has gotten into Shaw and Bosby, but folkstyle can't have a trios match because he wants nothing to do with either of them. Bosby said that's alright, because he has the perfect replacement member in mind already. Mason told Bosby he should have said that sooner, and the two men attacked Hunter Holdcraft. Mason and Bosby each grabbed a leg and applied the ankle lock to Holdcraft until Giant Baba Yaga and Fuego Del Sol made the save.
