Hey! Sorry for the bother, but I'm extremely new to ArtFight! I wanna join in this year, but I'm not exactly sure what ArtFight even is. All I've done is read the rules 😅 could you maybe summarize what ArtFight is, how to join, and anything else that might be useful for me? Thank you!! 🥰

Hi, no worries at all! Art Fight is, at its core, an event held once a year where the goal is to make art of others' characters. It starts on July 1st at 12:00 PM Mountain Time every year and lasts for one month only.

By submitting art (attacks) to the site, you can also gain points for your assigned team; the team with the most points at the end of the month wins! We have a unique theme for each event - this is where we get our teams! Last year was Vampires vs Werewolves and the year before that was Bloom vs Wither. The theme is just for fun, though, and the main goal of the event is to gift art.

You can join by making an account on the site through the "register" button in the top right corner. You can also upload any original characters you have anytime, regardless of if there's an event going on or not.

Every year without fail I will: 1. Realize artfight is coming up again only bc my dash over various websites explodes with team cards and then I go: "oh shit, gotta prepare refs". As if my brain can only compute 1 or 2 weeks ahead at most. You'd think 2 weeks are plenty of time to still get all the stuff sorted and ref sheets done right? Wrong. 1 week crunch time between attack to get that stuff sorted out because 2 weeks obviously is too little time after all I need at least three nevermind all the months in between that were free and available to do all that nah, nah.. before being alerted to AF starting up again July does not exist apparently and after AF concludes all the other months equally do not exists I am in the void doomed to timeloop through the same process each year girlfailure style.

2. Bookmark like crazy and then despair bc mathematically the amount of booksmarks cannot be realized as artworks in a singular month but does that stop me? No. I will try anyway. (it never works out for me ever but I learn nothing I will go ham on it like a woman on a mission)

3. Due to memory problems and a lack of idk... object permanence? Mental blindness? I will realize somewhen around this time too, that I might have said to myself last year: "I will comment on this defense for me a lil later when I am less exhausted" and forgotten to follow suit with that plan. Cue the internal crisis of "should I comment fashionably super late on this or simply not engage at all at this point bc commenting now feels even ruder" but not saying anything at all is even worse and flipflop on that anxiously for a couple of days and there is a good chance it might slip my mind again. 4. So I follow my crazy bookmark system religiously and forget that other people can and will attack during AF and suddenly I have a piece I need to revenge on and that flips my entire system over. I do indeed simply forget this is a thing. Gets me every time. I just wanna throw art at people can u maybe wait with throwing back I have a system ahhhhhh.

5. What is food, sleep. normal creature comforts even. Why am I subjected to the whimsy of a flesh vessel I wanna do arting and arting only for a month straight. Why am I made to endure corporal woes. Embarrassing.

6. were in gods green earth is my pen. I just held it to do art where did it go.

7. How do you explain a therapist how you willingly succumb to madness with a smile on your face and a cramp in your shoulder each year.

One Year Later...

So it's been a bit! Exactly one year since I started this account, and not much has happened! Seemingly!

First thing's first, today's a holiday! It's been exactly 7 years since The Patriots was first created back in 2017 and exactly 1 year since I started the website! (I know it says 2 up there but I'm tired and making this at midnight alright?), it was so long ago when I threw together a cheesy communist supervillain to paper and built a show around him! Which eventually became a web-comic after I realized the animation industry is hard and evil and scary right now!

As I said on my main blog I have answers, not INTERESTING answers, but ANSWERS!!!!

>The Patriots is still happening! Just a whole litany of life stuff's been going on, attempts at college, invoicing, as well as me realizing that making a web-comic is a LOT harder than a lot of folks make it seem! Since I first launched the website (with help from the ever lovely @docilepillow), Episode 1: Boston Commune has been wholly edited twice! Episode 2: Generation Evil! has finished its first couple drafts, and much more recently Episode 3: Rip & Terror has FINALLY been outlined after months of mulling! A bit more obvious: Patriots art still happens sporadically via my end of month art-dumps over on my main blog, though like most of my projects I have been sluggish to put together an area where all the characters and their biographies are spread out (Commie King, the first character and namesake of CK Day, doesn't even have an article!), which is where I segue into articles!

>The site is not abandoned, just outdated! I've been thinking of redesigns and perhaps simplifying how I do bios so you can get the regular scope of the character as well as it being just Easier for me, the hardest part of course is always the ref itself, but I've also thought of a myriad of other updates to the characters themselves (hint: a simpler description of Red's powers and the dropping of Lucy's boyfriend maybe probably!), honestly with my creative process expect edits to be a normal occurrence! The Patriots kinda-sorta-sister-series, Phenomenal! Made waves during Artfight over The Patriots themselves this year, and I look forward to giving them bios too, just...not here, duh, but I feel like that's worth mentioning. Quick update + A little treat!

Hello! I won't be very active during July because of ArtFight and a few illustrations i have planned (on top of my job, send help), so to make up for the upcoming lack of content, here's some insight on how i animate my Twst Chibis :)

(shoutout to the person who sent an ask about this topic! idk if i misclicked or if you took it down yourself, but it made me really happy to be asked and i spent 4 hours writing this as an answer, so i'm posting anyway lol)

I'll be taking Mafuyu as the exemple here, because he's the most complete one i made so far.

Firstly, here's some WIPs i saved showing off his faces and hair bones

Basically i went ahead and made an entire rig for him, since i know i'm eventually going to come back and make him more reactions and outfits. I started from scratch so it took a while, but at least now i have a nice base ready to go!

The original sketch was made on CSP, then the model itself and animation were made on Toon Boom because i haven't learned to use Live 2D yet.

Great thing about that is that it ended up being fully vectorized, which is always a plus if i ever need to resize him.

Here's a zoom (or huh, as close up in as my screen will allow) on all the elements, and their hierarchy. From the left are the elements that show up on top of everything (pearls, hair, head & face), to the ones that are behind everything on the right (cardigan back, braid, shadow):

It's kinda tricky to describe but all elements have their individual pegs (the green bits), which then get linked up additionally and in groups, so for example if i start selecting from the hand and go up, it goes:

Hand -> Hand + Forearm -> Hand + Forearm + Upper arm -> Both Arms + Torso + Head + Hair -> Upper Body + Pelvis + Both Legs

Once the model was done it was onto animating!

No secrets here, i really just tried my best to match the rhythm of how the in-game models move, what movements came back regularly etc... So typically: the heads often bop up and down in a specific way when they laugh or look up, the entire body stretches slightly when they jump or get startled, things like that.

I keep thinking that technically i shouldn't have animated the bangs because the in-game models have pretty limited hair animations, but hhh it felt too important to skip for Mafuyu (and mostly i was just having fun lol).

Just for fun, here's what most of my timeline looks like for the idle animation:

I'm confident that the og animations are fully tweened, so i did that too. But ofc with some adjustments to the timing so it doesn't look stiff. Since everything is on ones I didn't have the patience to go back and modify frames by hand lol.

It was especially tricky to figure out how to make the elbows look good, because of the pattern on his cardigan. I had to redraw the arms like 4 times to have them work in all positions. I spent many minutes looking at in-game models that had checkered sleeves (White Rabbit Deuce ended up being my main reference) to analyse how they made theirs work. I could've bothered making a clipping texture that I could warp to match the movement of the arm but,,, that probably would've killed my motivation entirely, i was determined to make this look good, but not THAT much lmao

The bangs, braid and cardigan were the only elements that i animated with bones and warps, for everything else i just used basic pegs to rotate and stretch the limbs

After that i just threw a Ramshackle themed bg behind him and gifed him up, and Voilà!

Random/fun facts, because why not:

The shoes took me 4 hours to make, because im really not used to drawing with vector tools, all those details made it hell lol

His proportions are mostly based off of Ruggie's model :)

I think that about covers it! I tried going into details without being boring, so hopefully it's still understandable, and maybe even interesting for curious folks 🤞

You guys know me, I CANNOT! CANNOT stop myself from doing things over the top so that’s pretty much what I DID! AGAIN! Hey, IS SUMMER DON’T JUDGE ME! I LOVE SUMMER AND THE SEA! And, it is my first time in ArtFight so why not make a good impression? Huh? Am I right or am I wrong? 👀

Anyway, this was such a fun time to draw my ocs once again since this year of college had literally stopped me from doing any kind of personal art, however, I was finally able to rest with God’s help and finish the first year of art school torture 🥲🫡

Maybe some of you might wonder and realize that some of my ocs look… slightly different or the word “slightly” is a bit said*ahem* Let’s just SAY my ocs had gone through a second puberty this year or I did overall with my style too 💀👌🏼✨

TO BE HONEST, I REALLY CAN’T BELIEVE THAT I DREW THIS- I still can’t believe how much God helped me improve! 🥹🤍💖

I’m just so happy with how much God helped me improve and surely I didn’t realize until I drew my ocs again and saw God’s hand over me, not just through art but maturity as well. Sometimes we need to go through fire and pain to see the mistakes or things that harm us in life and let go in order to get closer to the Lord! Who knows? In what way God can use me and you as well to spread the word of God even in this yearly art challenge?

silly question but: does wolf alík look any different from a regular wolf? when she's fully transformed, is there anything that sets her apart, or does she just look like an average, straight up wolf?

look at her hands and feet. human joints should not be like that, and wolf paws do not look like that. her claws.. god just look at them. blazys art explains alíks messed up wolf situation far better than i ever could. her ears, too, are just... god, look at them!! i have to move on from this art or ill just keep saying "look at it!!" but, well. Look at it.

some of my own alík wolf art:) the first one is when shes fully transformed, but also the first ever art i did of her like that, so take it with a grain of salt, but still take it. the second is her like... in her metamorphisis era - my internet connection is kinda MEAN and EVIL right now so i can't add them rn .. ill either rb with them later or edit them into the post. for now i just put links to the images :( sorry! plus the mentioned image from before. now Onto serious business

something that alík always has, no matter form, is her human eyes - but they're not really human! their colouration is one of a wolf's, and her eyesight is also almost as good as that of one. this is messed up when she's in full wolf mode, because its really.. just, weird. can you imagine looking at a dog with human eyes? a cat? a cow? no!! because its weird!!!! shes a FREAK!! (affectionate)

another weirdo thing about her face is her teeth. hes got canine teeth, no doubt about it, but i do think she has a bit more teeth than she should have.. maybe three more... ? two more? i think the amount of teeth is not equivalent with neither the amount humans should have nor the amount wolves should have.. like 38 or smth. this doesn't change in her transformation, but her jaw and gums do! it hurts! Ouchies! it also shifts her teeth around.. tbh i wouldnt be surprised if she lost a tooth or two transforming sometime.

as you may have noticed, alík has most of her fur on her head! this is because of hair! she has a big ol' tuft of fur on her head when she's in wolf mode and it makes her look silly. depending on how far along in transition they are, their fur is like... its in blotches over their body. a tuft here, a tuft there, no fur at all someplace else... her spine gets covered in fur first. bc its like !! hair to tail:)

her limbs are weird, too. her arms are more humanoid than her legs - my friend mikey @/monstertsunami shows this wonderfully in his art of alík and their gf idk who she is i heard shes some kind of loser? ermmm what the freak🔥

oh wow it let me add an image that time Awesome!!! anyway, you can see how her feet are pretty pawsome, huh?? shes got pawpads - is that what its called for wolves? i cant find info :( - and her joints are more.. like, look at how she's standing! her ankles! everybody say thank you mikey... !!! this stays in her wolf form, in a way

in the 'mentioned image' from before, you can see - ifyou can read my handwriting lol - that there's text around her feet/paws (peets...) that says 'human hands - fucked up paws'. in the linked image 'first one' , you can see her fucked up wolf hands more clearly! thats something that ive kept. i think she could grab you, even as a wolf. she keeps her thumbs. even if they dont work as well. this makes running as a wolf difficult for her, because her fingers are very much in the way !! herr back feet are more wolf-like in her wolf mode, even twisting her hips to work better !! opposite goes for her hands, though - her arms, like.. theyre not good for wolves ! her elbow is forced into a shitty position, her shoulders are.. bad...

and, as mentioned, her nose is fucked up. the smell of blood is an intimate friend of hers 💥it like.. god, her face goes through So Much. her skull gets absolutely , like ... goddd shes definetely broken bones transforming before... her nose is like, stretched out ? idk how to explain it .. its like if you used the 'free transform' tool on it

in short, id say theres a few main things that set alík apart from a regular wolf:

human eyes

human hands (sometimes covered in fur)

teeth

body isn't always fully covered in fur (its not easy for his body to bust out ten thousand fur strands all over his body, ya know? needs resources for that to happen)

movement (can't run as well, vocal cords arent probs in the best state after her neck fucking... look at it)

smell. she smells weird. oyou dont care about that but wolves would i think

then there's like, little basic anatomy stuff, like she will Never have the proper body of a wolf . maybe if she was like, for a year as a wolf, or two, or maybe even fine her body would be like Ok were wolf now . and her bones would settle ... but this is a question of years and time she does not have. her lifespan is also all kinds of fucked up. if she wasnt being experimented on evey day of her life ever, she'd probs live until her 40s? maybe late 40s if she had a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE filled with JOY and WHIMSY!!!! but i think now she'll die like, in her pafl au, i dont think she'll make it to 35.. sad! ouppy gone

so, i'm raka. i've lurked around the internet for a little while now--since I was about five. restricted internet access? don't know her. i only started really participating in online communities when i was about 10, on quotev and amino (rip, it was a shitshow but i had a good time for the most part). at some point i just kinda...fell off of trying to find internet spaces? it didn't really feel fun anymore, y'know? i went back to lurking, looking at stuff i enjoyed/making things in silence.

well, fuck that. if i wanna have fun, i'm gonna make it fun. i love drawing, i always have!! i've been drawing since i was about five or six. it's always been an escape for me during REALLY rough times--it made me happy to draw my favorite characters, and even create my own! i love interacting with fandom spaces too, finding folks who are into the same stuff i am. connecting with strangers is fun, when you don't really know anybody irl who shares your exact interests!

i wanna make/reblog fandom art on here, and maybe make moots/friends. i also have OCs i love and adore that i'd like to share--with lore, of course.

Weekly Update July 5, 2024

I’m very sleepy because I was kept up with fireworks and then woke up in the middle of the night from nightmare. Still in a good mood because I found the dumpster guitar though. I tried to work on bigger projects between Artfight attacks, but I do want to try to finish off a few more this weekend. But tonight I’ll probably sleep early. Probably.

Artfight is going well, I have around 9 more attacks sketched that need to get digitized, I’m going to try pixel art again for some of them, since I do want to get good at it and I have slacked off for a while. Also got a couple comic panels outlined between attacks, because I thought they’d be quick. They weren’t but I’m going to keep going at it. Took another shot at comic writing as well, but no progress yet.

Other big thing I was messing with this week was music. As mentioned before I found a free guitar in the dumpster and I plan to make another push to learn it. I also fiddled with vocaloid again, and have effectively retuned OEB, just need to finish up harmonies which I’ll do once I’m home. Again I found out last week that I can speed up future pruning significantly with midi files, so I’ll try to record some if I’m getting art burnout this weekend. I also *tried* finishing up another instrumental ambient piece, but decided I didn’t like the piano and will be redoing it once I’m in the headspace. Big thing as far as music goes is I finished up a first draft of instrumentals for RR, which I’ll try to get vocals done alongside any other midi files I need to record, and get mixing done between Artfight attacks. I know I will at some point get that big inspiration hit for music and unload, but for now, I’m just kinda waiting and doing the easy stuff. Next steps will be finishing off the OEB vocals and mixing those in, finishing off RR, and probably redoing the instruments for BATB for the third time because I actually know what I’m doing now. That sounds bad but really it’s just a bunch of copy-paste and picking out instruments again. I really have been enjoying music, I just need to slog through my unfinished stuff before starting something new.

Really that’s it as far as this week. This month is going to be slow on projects due to Artfight, but that’s okay. I guess I just don’t have a lot to say. Tonight I’m going to try to get rest, probably going to change my mind but for now I’ll anticipate either going right to bed once I get home, or going and getting the dumpster guitar looked at and maybe getting the string fixed. If it’s not too expensive.

i was like "hm. so I want to make something like breakcore, cuz that's got a y2k-ish vibe. but breakcore is WAY too intense. so what is breakcore but less intense?"

For those who don't know, DnB (Drum and bass) music is the predecessor to breakcore. I have know idea how well known this is, so I might look really stupid right now.
