Wild how we know that Elizabeth Woodville was officially appointed to royal councils in her own right during her husband’s reign and fortified the Tower of London in preparation of a siege while 8-months pregnant and had forces gathering at Westminster “in the queen’s name” in 1483 – only for NONE of these things to be even included, let alone explored, in the vast majority of scholarship and historical novels involving her.
#lol I don't remember writing this - I found it when I was searching for something else in my drafts. But it's 100% true so I had to post it.#elizabeth woodville#my post#Imo this is mainly because Elizabeth's negative historiography has always involved both vilification and diminishment in equal measure.#and because her brand of vilification (femme fatale; intriguer) suggests more indirect/“feminine” than legitimate/forceful types of power#It's still bizarre though-you'd think these would be some of the most famous & defining aspects of Elizabeth's life. But apparently not#I guess she only matters when it comes to marrying Edward and Promoting Her Family and scheming against Richard#There is very lacking interest in her beyond those things even in her traditionally negative depictions#And most of her “reassessments” tend to do diminish her so badly she's rendered utterly irrelevant and almost pathetic by the end of it#Even when some of these things *are* mentioned they're never truly emphasized as they should be.#See: her formal appointment in royal councils. It was highly unconventional + entirely unprecedented for queens in the 14th & 15th century#You'd think this would be incredibly important and highlighted when analyzing late medieval queenship in England but apparently not#Historians are more willing to straight-up INVENT positions & roles for so many other late medieval queens/king's mothers that didn't exist#(not getting into this right now it's too long...)#But somehow acknowledging and discussing Elizabeth's ACTUAL formally appointed role is too much for them I guess#She's either subsumed into the general vilification of her family (never mind that they were known as 'the queen's kin' to actual#contemporaries; they were defined by HER not the other way around) or she's rendered utterly insignificant by historians. Often both.#But at the end of the day her individual role and identity often overlooked or downplayed in both scenarios#and ofc I've said this before but - there has literally never been a proper reassessment of Elizabeth's role in 1483-85 TILL DATE#despite the fact that it's such a sensational and well-known time period in medieval England#This isn't even a Wars of the Roses thing. Both Margaret of Anjou and Margaret Beaufort have had multiple different reassessments#of their roles and positions during their respective crises/upheavals by now;#There is simply a distinct lack of interest in reassessing Elizabeth in a similar way and I think this needs to be acknowledged.#Speaking of which - there's also a persistent habit of analyzing her through the context of Margaret of Anjou or Elizabeth of York#(either as a parallel or a foil) rather than as a historical figure in HER OWN RIGHT#that's also too long to get into I just wanted to point it out because I hate it and I think it's utterly senseless#I've so much to say about how all of this affects her portrayal in historical fiction as well but that's going into a whole other tangent#ofc there are other things but these in particular *really* frustrate me#just felt like ranting a bit in the tags because these are all things that I want to individually discuss someday with proper posts...

Chapter Three: Shadows of the Second Earth
New York never stopped moving. Taxis sped by, people rushed across crosswalks, neon billboards flickered against the night sky. But none of it felt real.
Not with that thing hanging above them.
Valeria Richards glanced up. The second Earth loomed in the sky—silent, massive, an impossibility made real.
Valeria (softly):
“Every time I look at it, I feel like it shouldn’t be there. But it is.”
Spider-Man walked beside her, hands in his hoodie pockets. He followed her gaze, then quickly looked away.
Spider-Man:
“Yeah, I’ve been trying to pretend it’s just a really aggressive optical illusion, but that’s not really working out for me.”
Valeria checked her bracelet. Data scrolled across the screen, the numbers shifting too fast for most people to process. But she wasn’t most people.
Valeria (focused):
“I’ve been running calculations based on my father’s work. The energy readings from that second Earth match the kind of distortions that teleported my family away. My godfather is tracking it, but until he finds something, I need to gather as much intel as I can.”
Spider-Man tilted his head.
Spider-Man:
“Godfather, huh? Is he the ‘offer you can’t refuse’ kind or the ‘buys you socks for Christmas’ kind?”
Valeria smirked slightly.
Valeria:
“Neither. More like the ‘rules a country and speaks in third person’ kind.”
Spider-Man blinked.
Spider-Man:
“…Wait. Back up. Rules a country? Who is this guy?”
She considered him for a moment. It was strange—Peter Parker was famous in her world. He and her father had fought side by side. But this Spider-Man had never even heard of Victor von Doom.
She could explain. But right now, there were bigger concerns.
Valeria (shaking her head):
“It’s complicated. I’ll fill you in later.”
Spider-Man exhaled through his nose.
Spider-Man:
“Cool. Love being kept in suspense. No problem at all.”
They kept walking. Valeria’s eyes scanned the skyline, watching for anything unusual. Spider-Man, however, was watching something else.
They were being followed.
He didn’t turn his head, didn’t slow his pace. But he noticed. The way certain shadows weren’t quite right. The occasional glint of metal from the rooftops. He didn’t know who—or what—was tailing them, but he’d spent enough time getting hunted to recognize when he was being watched.
He said nothing. For now.
Instead, he kept his tone light.
Spider-Man:
“So, whats the plan? We just keep walking and hope the big floating apocalypse ball in the sky drops a clue in our laps?”
Before Valeria could respond, the air hummed.
Not a sound. A vibration. Deep. Unnatural.
They both stopped.
Ahead, the streets were too quiet. The usual city noise—the chatter, the honking, the distant sirens—felt muted. People kept moving, but something was off. It was like they were subconsciously avoiding something they weren’t even aware of.
Then—near the financial district—a ripple of golden energy flickered into existence.
A portal.
Jagged at the edges, unstable, its glow casting warped reflections against the glass buildings.
Figures emerged. Cloaked. Moving with eerie precision. Their forms flickered, like they were being stretched and compressed by an unseen force. Their faces remained obscured, but their intent was clear.
Valeria’s bracelet spiked with data.
Valeria (eyes widening):
“This… isn’t good.”
Spider-Man flexed his fingers, cracking his knuckles.
Spider-Man:
“Yeah, I kinda figured. Any chance they’re just here for a friendly meet-and-greet?”
Valeria didn’t answer. She was already moving.
Spider-Man sighed.
Spider-Man:
“Of course not. Alright, let’s go crash their party.”
They took off into the night.
And from the rooftops, the Doombots adjusted their positions, keeping perfect pace.
Spider-Man still didn’t say anything. Didn’t look back.
But he noticed.

"Oh hey, I think I've heard of you! You're someone the council always mumbled about.." - Quantum Morticia (@therevivedcouncil)
Of course, they mumbled about me! I was above them in every way.
I have to admit I actually thought they were dead...
I don't think I've met you... you're one of those Morticias, aren't you?
*he leaned down to look into their eyes*

“Much has been written on the extent and effects of the Woodville influence on Edward of Westminster, but the nature of his mother's [Elizabeth Woodville's] role has usually been overlooked, or subsumed into the general picture of her family's activities. Initially her position was probably the most prominent in his household. She was the only member of his original 1471 council not already on the king's council and her name headed the list of those appointed as administrators in Wales during Edward's minority. It was, therefore, not only with the queen's 'assent' that the council (or four of them) made their decisions, but with her 'advise and exp[re]se consent', and this included nominating the prince's officers when posts became void. The interests of many of Prince Edward's council were not primarily focused on their role in this council, so ten new members were assigned prior to the prince's departure for Ludlow in 1473, among them the queen's cousin Richard Haute and her confessor, Edward Story. Lowe has argued that of the twenty-five members of this council, only fourteen were fully active, the three principal members being the queen, Rivers, and Haute, and that of the remaining eleven, at least eight had prior connections with the Woodvilles. The queen was one of the three members to hold a key to the prince's treasury; she travelled with him to Ludlow and she, along with the prince's other councillors, appears to have been the 'driving force' behind efforts to restore peace in the area by punishing those responsible for disorders in the previous autumn. Elizabeth, 'oure Sovereigne and Liege Lady the Quene', presided over the commission to hear trials in Hereford with the infant prince until the king himself arrived."

Camden leader says he backs Khan's Oxford Street plans
