Reyna: I'm turning in this month's evaluation, anything you want to report?
Annabeth: Piper put my stuff on Jell-O again.
Piper, eating a cup of Jell-O: how do you know it was me?!
Jason, raises his hand: Leo tried to kiss me. I didn't tell anyone because I'm not really sure how I feel about it.
Leo: Jason, don't report that!
Jason: I'm not really making a formal complaint, I just think we should talk about it.
Hazel: I'd like to report a hate crime. Frank paid me to do the dishes.
Frank: that's not a hate crime.
Hazel: well I still hated it!
Nico: well I have a real problem. Percy turned me down for the third time, is there any way to kick him out of the group?
Reyna: well you need a cause, Nico.
Nico: I have a cause. It's beCAUSE.... I hate him now.

Re: Reyna joining the Hunters and why I think it’s actually really depressing
So for a variety of reasons I’m not a huge fan of Reyna’s arc ending with her joining the Hunters of Artemis. Part of that is rrverse characters should be allowed to be single without joining the eternal celibacy club, but that’s not a problem exclusive to Reyna. I also think handling asexuality in the context of celibacy by choice is… messy by default, especially if it’s your one confirmed ace character.
Beyond that, though, there’s a bunch of context surrounding Reyna’s life and personality that just make that choice seem really sad to me?
I’ll split this into three thematic subsections and put the second and third one under the cut because this got pretty long
Reyna and her sense of duty:
I highly suspect Reyna’s fatal flaw is her sense of duty. This is never explicitly confirmed (because no one except Percy and Annabeth has confirmed fatal flaws), but duty is the theme her entire character revolves around. Basically from birth she’s raised to believe the fate of New Rome lies on her shoulders. A lot of her actions in the books explicitly link back to her sense of duty.
She runs herself ragged trying to find Jason and trying to manage a job made for two people on her own before Son of Neptune.
A lot of her conflict stems from the fact that what is necessary to protect her home (leaving her post and following Jason) inherently clashes with the rules of that home.
Reyna also actively chides others (like Lavinia in ToA) for leaving their posts and not sharing that same sense of duty.
Because of this, like Jason, Reyna is never really able to be a kid.
Joining the Hunters sort of does a good thing in that it allows Reyna to gain some distance specifically from New Rome, which her fate and also a lot of her trauma regarding her upbringing revolves around.
But it doesn’t allow her to be a kid any more than being a praetor at Camp Jupiter did. Potentially less so, actually, seeing as the Hunters are basically always on the move doing something important while at Camp Jupiter you probably have regular days off and a city to visit and relax in always right around the corner.
Reyna lays down one duty and immediately commits herself to the next one. She doesn’t grow and learn that she doesn’t have to carry the fate of the world on her shoulders. She just trades one burden for another.
—————————
Reyna and her emotions:
The timing of Reyna’s choice to join the Hunters seems really off. New Rome is mostly destroyed and just suffered a catastrophic amount of losses. Reyna absolutely has a right to step down as a leader, but this seems like an odd time for her to do it, especially considering she just completely up and leaves instead of at least sticking around to help rebuild her home and then join the Hunters after. As someone so fundamentally defined by her duties and her loyalty to New Rome, why does she spend half a day off-screen and then suddenly decide actually she’ll leave her destroyed home and all those grieving people for someone else to deal with? It just seems really out of character for her.
This begs the question: is Reyna really making that choice because she figured out it’s what she wants, or is it because she can’t deal with what happened? Because looking at all the destruction and attending all the funerals—deaths that happened while she was technically in charge but unable to be present, people she was supposed to protect—reminds her of every way she’s failed her home?
Also, Jason just died.
Jason was Reyna’s best friend for years. He was the first person she allowed herself to grow close to after her sister left her, and very possibly the first person she ever fell in love with. She never properly got to make up with Jason. Very likely they were both afraid to be hurt again. They both thought there’d be time for it later. But there wasn’t. There isn’t. She only got her best friend back in a coffin, and even in death, returning to New Rome (to her) wasn’t Jason’s choice.
Reyna leaves the place where they grew up together, the duties they used to share and all the memories—memories that were just hers, no longer his, since he never properly got them back—two days after she watched his pyre burn.
How much of that is her leaving because she wants to, and how much of it is the fact that she can’t keep her walls up and keep herself going in the place that used to be theirs, where Jason’s ghost is staring back at her at every corner? How much of her leaving is her unwillingness to deal with her grief?
Reyna running away from her feelings is an ongoing theme. It makes sense from a lot of different angles why she’d do it.
She was raised by an abusive father who often turned his feelings (what child Reyna would have seen as “love”, but was primarily paranoia/anger) against her and Hylla.
It’s also addressed directly that Reyna worries if she feels nervous or scared, her emotions will cause the camp to worry as well—her power is quite literally to project her own emotions outward, so if she does that with negative emotions (intentionally or unintentionally), it would cause problems. Suppressing them feels safer. On top of that, in her role as a leader, she has to provide a certain sense of confidence and assurance even when she herself doesn’t feel it.
Joining the Hunters instead of facing those feelings is not exactly a great way to heal in that regard.
————————
Reyna and the weight of Bellona’s prophecy:
As far as we’re aware, Camp Jupiter has faced more threats in the few years Reyna was in charge than it has in centuries. First the Titan war (which Reyna must have arrived partway through, depending on how early the Romans even knew about and were involved in what was happening there), then the war with Gaia, then the Emperors.
And obviously that’s not actually Reyna’s fault—Reyna is, in fact, a huge contributing factor to why these disasters weren’t a lot worse and didn’t claim even more lives. But this is all put on the shoulders of a girl who knows her fate is intricately linked to the legacy of Rome.
A girl who is already convinced that her love is fundamentally destructive and keeps other people from being happy. Her father spent her entire childhood suspicious of Reyna potentially betraying him—and, because she ended up killing him in self-defense, it’s very easy for a traumatized ten year old to internalize that maybe that suspicion was totally warranted. Then Circe’s Island gets destroyed. Then Hylla finds her happiness with the Amazons by leaving Reyna. Then Jason leaves her, seeming so much happier with Piper and Leo than he ever was with her.
Everyone she loves always seems to be happier without her.
So maybe the best thing she can do for New Rome—a home that she loves and that has faced so much destruction in the short time she’s spent there—is to leave.
Maybe the best way to keep New Rome safe (because New Rome’s survival is linked to Hylla and Reyna’s bloodline continuing to exist) is to make herself immortal and preserve it that way. Because, unless Reyna dies in battle, she could live centuries—potentially thousands of years—as a Hunter. She can’t ever properly go back to the home she loved, because that’s not how the Hunters work. But she’s still bound to her fate by her blood. She’s still doing her duty to New Rome by living as long as she can.
It’s not something she can ever be free of.
The worst thing about this is I think Reyna choosing to find a fate for herself outside of New Rome could have actually been a great way to conclude her arc, but god do I wish it was executed differently and actually given proper exploration/space to breathe instead of just resolved by taking her off-screen for a few hours and then sticking her with the group of female warriors that barely gets to have any plot relevance outside of conveniently coming to people’s rescue.

obviously I'd be thrilled to just get the whole PJO series adapted and then end it there. However: Heroes of Olympus as a story can be cleaned up sooooooo much in a way that PJO just doesn't need to be, and a tv adaptation offers the perfect opportunity to do so
like honestly my hottake is that I think Disney could solve both the problem of adapting a long, convoluted sequel series and a lot of the problems HOO as a story has if they a) do The Lost Hero and Son of Neptune in the same season and b) deliberately wait until the PJO actors are in their 20s to do it
Just thinking about this a bit more:
three 12-14 episode seasons, with TLH/SoN in S1, a modified MoA in S2 that deals with some of the Argo crews' HoH subplots, and then HoH/BoO in S3
Percy and Annabeth are in their 20s and newly engaged when he disappears. This sets up the arc of Percy dreaming about settling down with Annabeth in New Rome in a more organic, functional way and also gives us as viewers a chance to see that the aftermath of the Titan War has resulted in tangible, lasting change for the demigods of Camp Half-Blood
Grover replaces Coach Hedge as the Seven's collective Protector+chaperone, which solves the series' problem of Grover's absence and the absence of the PJO Trio's friendship
the whole show/story takes place over ~6 months instead of the year it did in the books, and Percy+Jason's individual quests happen concurrently (simply not letting Percy sleep for 8 months and making an episode where he establishes himself at the Roman camp for awhile before he's forced on the quest with Frank and Hazel would solve about half of the problems on the Roman side of the series)
Season-wise, things mostly sort themselves out:
The first season starts off introducing the Lost Hero trio and we find out that Percy's missing at the end of the first episode. The second episode opens with Percy waking up at the Wolf House and starting his journey to New Rome. We get one episode entirely devoted to amnesiac Jason and Percy integrating into the new camps, making friends, and learning about their missing counterpart before the quest plots start up.
The season then alternates between Jason, Piper, and Leo's "Find Hera" quest and Percy, Hazel, and Frank's Alaska quest, with intermittent jumps to the Greek and Roman efforts to find Percy and Jason. It ends with Percy and Jason regaining their memories and each camp realizing their leader is on the other side of the country in "enemy" territory.
The second season opens around a month later as the Argo II docks in New Rome. Percy and Jason have both been given time to make friends, integrate themselves into the opposing camp, and become adjusted to a different way of life with all of their memories intact. They haven't physically returned to their home camps as they've both independently come to the conclusion that Hera switched them to initiate inter-camp unity and are wary of doing anything that would disrupt that goal. However, Percy and Jason have both managed to get messages to Annabeth and Reyna respectively at some point in that month, so everyone knows everyone is safe when the Greeks finally arrive in New Rome.
Cue MoA's various plotlines, which would be cleaned up and streamlined significantly while also integrating in some of the HoH arcs like Hazel learning how to manipulate the Mist, Frank learning how to use his shapeshifting powers, Piper coming into her own as a daughter of Aphrodite, Leo's seventh wheel arc and the Calypso subplot, Jason struggling to figure out what his place is, the Jason-Nico friendship, etc. Also set up the Greek v. Roman dispute and Reyna following them to Greece. Season ends with the Annabeth-Arachne confrontation and Tartarus fall.
The third season combines HoH and BOO; the season alternates between Percy and Annabeth's journey through Tartarus while the rest of the Seven finish their various character arcs via gathering the elements for the Physicians' Cure and journeying to the Doors of Death. After they rescue Percy and Annabeth and close the Doors, they plan to head straight to Athens to take on Gaea. Reyna reaches them just after, and Annabeth sends her and Nico off with the Athena Parthenos with Grover as their Protector.
The final battle switches between The Seven+Gods vs. Gaea+The Giants at the Acropolis and the Greeks vs. Romans at Camp Half-Blood. The Gaea plotline is resolved at the Acropolis, the Greek-Roman plotline is resolved as Nico and Reyna triumphantly arrive at Camp Half-Blood with the statue, a functional Greek-Roman working relationship, and the gods' blessing. This helps streamline the mess that was Blood of Olympus and actually provides a workable story resolution.
We get a final aftermath/epilogue episode that sorts out and ties up all remaining plot threads, teases Solangelo, and ends with Percy returning home to see his mom and planning out how to move to New Rome after he and Annabeth get married.
Obviously this is the roughest possible sketch of how it could be done, but I genuinely believe doing something like that could fix some of the biggest issues HOO has conceptually while streamlining all of the quest bloat. It'd be interesting to see them try, anyway.

Hiya, guys! Who's ready to see the dawn of Piper's uncharitable thoughts about Percy and the sinking of the ship Pipabeth? :D This will be the first of THREE chapters posted today, so I look forward to seeing you all again in a few hours!
Then she heard something from Festus. A series of clicks and whistles that echoed through the still air. She frowned up at the ceiling. She knew Festus and Leo talked to one another with Morse, but the dragon never really communicated directly with her or Jason like that. “Festus? What’s wrong?” SOS. LEO. TOP DECK. Piper felt the blood drain from her face. “Keep an eye on him for me!” she ordered the empty room before leaping to her feet and tearing down the hall. Her heart was thrumming soi fast and high in the back of her throat, but she didn’t have time to worry about that. She stumbled onto the deck, eyes wild, expecting to see swarms of Romans with wings sprouting from their backs swooping and attacking her crewmates. Instead, what she saw was Leo, eyes so wide that she could see the red-rimmed whites, plastered against the main mast with terror etched onto every one of his pale features. Percy Jackson was standing right in front of him, his hands fisted in the front of Leo’s shirt and their faces uncomfortably close. He was very obviously shouting something at Leo, but the blood was roaring in Piper’s ears far too loud for her to hear. *** The immediate fall out of Leo firing on New Rome
Piper clenched her fists as she looked down at Jason’s still form on the infirmary bed, and she couldn’t help but wonder how everything had gone so wrong so fast. Their arrival at New Rome had been… fine. It hadn’t gone down exactly how they’d planned, but that was okay, they made it work. Jason and Reyna had been incredibly awkward around one another, especially once Jason realized Percy had replaced him as Praetor and there were three people wearing fancy purple robes, but even that had been mostly smoothed over by Annabeth stepping forward as their leader and breaking off with Reyna to discuss everything. At the same time, Leo had volunteered to show Octavian around the Argo II to get him to maybe calm down or at least get him away from the crowd he was trying to whip up into a frenzy. Neither Piper or Jason had been all that thrilled with the arrangement, but one look from Leo had shut them up, so they decided to go on a walking tour of New Rome instead. She’d kind of wanted to hate the place because of everything it stood for, but it was bright and clean and pretty and Jason bounded around with a big, goofy grin like an overeager puppy, so she’d found that kind of hard. So, instead, she just relaxed and let herself enjoy this place Jason had called home for so long.
That’s when the fireballs started.
Piper wasn’t sure what was going on, really, she just knew that the Romans were so angry they weren’t even listening to her Charmspeak or Jason’s desperate pleas for them to stop. In theory, the lack of weapons should have been an advantage, but demigods were masters of improvisation, and Romans apparently loved throwing things. Jason had puffed up in front of her just like he always did when he sensed a threat, but he’d crumpled back into her waiting arms when a brick slammed into his temple. She’d screamed in horror and outrage, which was enough to make the Romans listen for just as long as it took for her to haul Jason’s ragdoll body over to the awaiting rope ladder. She’d clung to it and called for Festus to pull them up, which he did without hesitation. Then she’d somehow managed to drag Jason into the infirmary and now here she was dribbling what looked like movie theater popcorn butter into Jason’s slack-jawed mouth.
Then she heard something from Festus. A series of clicks and whistles that echoed through the still air. She frowned up at the ceiling. She knew Festus and Leo talked to one another with Morse, but the dragon never really communicated directly with her or Jason like that. “Festus? What’s wrong?”
SOS. LEO. TOP DECK. SOS. LEO.
CRACK!
Percy stumbled backwards a few steps, clutching his jaw in what was probably a mixture of shock and pain. He blinked a few times to get the stars out of his vision before scowling. “What–”
“Back the fuck up,” Piper snarled, and she could practically feel the power of her Charmspeak radiating off her body. Everyone on board took several steps back, the younger kids – Frank and Hazel, maybe? – were already so close to the edge that they almost stepped off the decking. Piper didn’t care, her gaze was solidly fixed on Percy, who was glaring right back at her. She clenched her fist. Her hand was on fire with sharp, searing pain, and she was pretty sure she’d broken her finger, but if Percy Jackson needed to be decked again, she’d happily volunteer for another go at him.
Annabeth was the first to speak and she stepped towards Piper, hands held up in a placating gesture. “Okay, Piper. Let’s just calm down before–”
“‘Calm down?’” Piper spat back. “I come out here to see your boyfriend has my best friend cornered while you stand there and watch, and you want me to calm down? Maybe get your dog on a leash before you try and tell me to calm down!”
Percy bared his teeth at her, but Piper bared hers right back. She was far too angry to be scared of much of anything, and besides, it’s not like he was all that intimidating in the first place. Jason did the whole wolf-thing better anyway.
Then warm fingers grabbed her wrist, just shy of tight enough to bruise. “Pipes,” Leo hissed, his voice still a little thicker than normal. “It’s fine. Just chillax.”
It was not fine, and Piper wanted to scream until everyone on Earth knew just how not-fine it was, but she refrained. Leo didn’t want her fist-fighting Percy Jackson, so she wouldn’t. This time. Instead, she took in a sharp breath and turned so she could properly look Leo over. Then she asked, “What’s going on here?”
“We were just trying to figure out what happened!” Hazel piped up. She and Frank hadn’t gotten any closer, but Frank was standing in front of her, trying to be as big as possible, which was kind of funny, seeing as he looked like he was also on the verge of tears. Hazel was peering around him, her eyes bright and eager, but she still mostly stayed under cover.
“Fantastic detective work, Jackson,” Piper sneered.
Percy’s scowl deepened. “Wasn’t a lot of ‘detective work’ to do, McLean. I got up here to see this guy firing his damn warship at New Rome without a care in the world. Sorry if that was more of an ‘ask questions later’ moment.”
Piper paused and looked at Annabeth, who crossed her arms and refused to meet Piper’s gaze. “That is what it looked like,” she admitted, her tone sharp and defensive. “Percy basically caught him red-handed. What exactly would you have had us do?”
Piper pursed her lips before turning around and in a deliberately friendly tone asked, “Leo, did you fire on New Rome?”
“No!” Leo said emphatically. Then he gripped the hair on the sides of his head. “I mean, I-I did, but I didn’t mean to!”
Piper’s frown deepened. “What do you mean?”
“I… I don’t know what happened!”
“You mean you don’t remember?” Annabeth asked sharply.
“I– No, I remember, but it’s fuzzy,” Leo explained desperately. “I could see myself doing things, but I don’t know why I was doing them!”
Piper considered that for a moment, then she shrugged and turned back to the rest of the group. “There you go. Something weird happened, but it wasn’t his fault. Case closed, suspect dismissed.”
“That’s bullshit,” Percy growled. “Why the hell should I believe a word out of his mouth? I don’t even know this guy.”
Piper wanted nothing more than to punch him in the face again, even if it broke even more of her fingers, but instead she leveled Annabeth with a heavy stare. “Well? What about you? You know him.”
Annabeth furrowed her brows and pulled her arms even closer to her body. “I do,” she confessed, likely remembering all those many many nights she and Leo had stayed up together designing and perfecting the very boat they were standing on. Annabeth had probably spent even more time with Leo over the past six months than she had Piper, which was saying a lot, considering all the afternoons they’d spent in the Athena cabin discussing mythology.
“And you didn’t think to take a moment to figure out why he’d be doing something like that?” Piper demanded. “That didn’t seem even a little out of character to you?”
“It didn’t seem like something he’d do,” Annabeth said. “But what else were we supposed to do? Piper, you weren’t there, you–”
“You’re damn right I wasn’t there,” Piper interrupted. “If I’d been there I would have asked at least one question before I bit someone’s head off!”
“Yeah, your entrance just now really sells that point,” Percy drawled.
“Shut up,” Piper ordered, and allowed herself to feel smugly satisfied with the click of teeth that answered her.
“Piper, we can’t just let him go,” Annabeth said, her tone somehow both gentle and frustrated. “Not until we figure out what happened. Right now we’re fleeing a crime scene, and he’s our main suspect.”
Piper gave her a stare so cold and hard it would put Khione to shame. “He’s your friend, not your enemy,” she reminded her, tone biting with frost. “And if he is your enemy, then I am, too.”
Silence fell, and no one would meet her eye.
Piper gave them all one last disgusted scoff before she turned to Leo. “C’mon. Let’s get the hell out of here,” she muttered, then grabbed his wrist and dragged him below deck.
They walked for a while in silence before Leo finally spoke in a voice far too tiny and fragile to have come from her best friend. “I didn’t mean to.”
Piper froze, then she yanked Leo into a hug. They stood there in the dimly lit hallway clutching one another tight. “I know you didn’t,” she said, her voice soft with conviction. “I know you’d never do that.”
“That-That was Jason’s home,” he stammered. “I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” she said again. Leo didn’t respond, he just trembled in her arms, so she just squeezed him tighter in response. They stood there in silence, holding one another in the gloom.

Percy Jackson X Star Wars
The Percy Jackson characters lightsaber colors + Fighting styles!!
(These are focused mainly on personality. And yes, I did my research lmao)
Tumblr media
Percy Jackson: A yellow lightsaber with a controlled and adaptable fighting style. His main focus is protecting others, it doesn’t matter whether he dies while doing so.
Annabeth Chase: A purple lightsaber with a calculated and ambitious fighting style. She has more of an offensive fighting style, but she calculates every move carefully. Her wisdom will ensure her win.
Grover Underwood: A green lightsaber with a more calm, defensive fighting style. He doesn’t fight unless it’s in self defense, and his main focus is to survive.
Luke Castellan: A red lightsaber with a more aggressive and competitive fighting style. He’s determined to win, no matter the cost. He’s fighting for his own beliefs, but he’s taking the wrong path to do so. If he dies while fighting, then so be it. But he won’t go down without a fight.
Thalia Grace: Thalia would have a white lightsaber with an easygoing and fearless fighting style. She does what she wants, and she doesn’t follow the rules of life. She fights with honor and devotion, and she’s always ready to help her friends in a fight.
Nico Di Angelo: This one was harder to decide, but I think he’d have a dark saber with a more adept and confident fighting style. He’s not afraid of death; he invites it, even. He’s not fighting to survive, no, he’s fighting because the battle has to be fought. He’s fighting to defeat a threat.
Jason Grace: Jason would have a blue lightsaber with a diplomatic and independent fighting style. He’s skilled, experienced, and highly focused.
Piper McLean: Piper would have a red lightsaber with an observant and passionate fighting style. She may get distracted by a certain blonde boy every once in awhile, but she stays focused and fights well.
Leo Valdez: Leo would have a purple lightsaber with a quick-witted, and resourceful fighting style. He uses the force to his advantage, managing to multitask between fighting and fixing the ship so that he can get the hell out of there. If something goes wrong, he’s quick to find another solution.
Hazel Levesque: Like Leo and Annabeth, Hazel would have a purple lightsaber with an elegant and fearless fighting style. She’s completely focused on the task at hand, fighting off enemies with amazing skill and grace.
Frank Zhang: Frank would have an orange lightsaber with a mix between an aggressive and controlled fighting style. He fights to survive, and sometimes to win. He acts with lots of thought and careful consideration, and he never kills unless absolutely necessary.
Reyna Ramirez: Reyna would obviously have a dark saber, with a diplomatic and rational fighting style. She’s the leader of the fight, and she tries to take the route that will cause the least amount of casualties but will still ensure victory.
Will Solace: Just as you expected, sunny boy would have a yellow lightsaber with a gentle and calm fighting style. No worries, he knows that a certain Italian boy has his back.
Bianca Di Angelo: A white lightsaber with a calm and determined fighting style. The reason for her fight doesn’t matter, she’s doing things her own way and causing the least amount of casualties she can.
Clarisse La Rue: Another hard one, but I imagine she’d have either a red or white lightsaber with a more aggressive and competitive fighting style. While she does enjoy fighting, she doesn’t kill unless necessary. She mostly fights for sport or self defense, but she’d never attack someone without reason. She also desires to make her loved ones proud, and she wants her accomplishments to be recognized.
Selena Beauregard: Selena would probably have a pink lightsaber with a more elegant and graceful fighting style. She doesn’t fight often, and she only does so when necessary.
Charles Beckondorf: Charlie would have an orange lightsaber with a Courageous and dependable fighting style. When he’s not in the forge making weapons for his allies, he’s fighting for the cause he believes in. He’s fighting to make sure that the next generations will have a better life, and perhaps a better future.
Chris Rodriguez: I feel like Chris would go from a red lightsaber to a white lightsaber, with a passionate and competitive fighting style. He’s had some ups and downs, and he’s learned that there’s better ways to fight for his cause without the need of brute force and unnecessary war.
Travis and Connor Stoll: Our little pranksters would have a pink lightsaber with a creative and dynamic fighting style. They’d win battles by their pure unique fighting style alone. They would switch up between forms during each fight, making them unpredictable and, to be honest, kind of a wildcard.
Ethan Nakumara: Ethan would have either a red or purple lightsaber with an ambitious and diligent fighting style. He believes that war is the only way to get what he wants, and he focuses more on emotion than logic.
Tumblr media
A/N: This took forever but it was so worth it lmao😭 I tried to go really in depth on the characters and their personalities. It was a little harder with Jason and Piper, since their characters just don’t really speak to me that well. I hope I did them justice.

honestly like going through your asks i agree sm how underwhelming heroes of olympus was. like in the og series there was so much death, betrayal, and character development and in hoo we see percy and annabeth in tartarus (which i felt like their disappearance should have had waayy more of an affect on the rest of crew but without annbeth as their leader and percy as their glue how are they serving) and Nico's forced coming out ceremony (poor boy was tamazatized by cupid and ric didn't even delve into much more after that?).
gaea was so underwhleming and i don't belive at all that she could have been beaten after she was fully formed. like there was no actual counter against a primordial and percy and annabeth only defeated luke bcuz he killed himselves. like i don't think celestial bronze can actually do enough damage to kill a god, yet alone the earth! (divine weapons be looking a little enticing here) and at least with kronos their was a personal connection. like i get that she tried to kill the people in the prophecy like with leo but i felt like it was so long ago leo had already comes terms with his mom's death. there was no emotional charge that should have been there and the romans vs greeks was so disappointing. i didn;t like at all that the greeks were good and the romans were evil and i felt like jason was to easily accepting within greek ranks. like yeah i get it, greep camp is more chill but their was no promised internal hostility and it just felt like their big battle wasn;t that big of a mutal battle, just greeks tryan stop another invasion. and don;t get me started on the athena statue. that was written SO weird and it definitely should have been established way earlier in the series. and poor nico and reyna tryna haul it across the world when they could have contributed much more. their perspectives was such a snooze-fest and i was just like what the hell is this side-quest?
like the second series was more mature and professional writing wise so i expected much more blood and gore. every demigod was a tragedy is the og series so it was so weird to see everyone live happily ever after after. and like i felt like he forgot how to create chemistry after percbeth. like japer??? was lacking like any flavor and hazel and leo had more chemistry than frank. like frank and hazel could have been such a good sable couple if they were written better. and the foced interactions with the mini-quests in the books were so awkward. rick should have created so much more interactions with each other or killed them off if he couldn't manage that many characters.
YES 👏 YOU 👏 GET 👏 IT
heroes of olympus honestly seemed so... poorly planned to me? like with pjo, a lot of plot points connected so well together whereas hoo was a mess and i genuinely think the amount of main characters was what rick had a lot of trouble with.
the first two books, the lost hero and the son of neptune were actually pretty good and that's because both books strictly focused on just three characters and three povs each. but then when the seven finally joined, things went downhill 😭
the last book was super disappointing. the seven + gods vs the gigantes went by really quickly and most of the "fighting" was just a paragraph or two of each battle. as for the gaea battle.... yeah 💀 i think it would've been cooler if the demigods (roman and greek) worked alongside the gods to take gaea down since, like it was mentioned many times before, that gaea would've been hard af to beat once she formed 💀
A DETAILED TEAM UP OF THE DEMIGODS FIGHTING ALONGSIDE THEIR GODLY PARENT??? POSEIDON AND PERCY SQUARING UP??? ZEUS AND JASON????? ANNABETH AND ATHENA???? I WOULD'VE LOVED THAT!!! 😩 (i definitely believe athena would be nagging her daughter throughout the whole fight about how she still doesn't approve of her boyfriend and annabeth is just "omg moooom 🙄 focus on the battle!!!)
octavian could've been better written too! it was clear that he was supposed to be the "luke" of the second series with gaea as "kronos", but his death was meh to me unlike with luke who i genuinely felt bad for especially since his reasons made sense. octavian... i didn't feel any sympathy for.
rick's favoritism for piper was also an issue for me too, especially as i grew older and out of my 'not like other girls' phase 😭
pls im just hoping that if hoo gets made into a tv show too, that there's MAJOR changes to it 🙏

More Hunger Games Au stuff!!
This will be more explore the changes for characters and how they're like in this au.
Percy Jackson
Victor of the 74th hunger games, from district 4. Afterwards he was positioned as a replacement mentor for district 10 as the last viable victor had passed due to unknown circumstances. He works with Annabeth and Grover as part of the rebel force. Very beloved by the capital citizens.
Annabeth Chase
One the leaders of the rebellion and district 13. Her father's family came from a line decent of D13 survivors who settled in D3. When she was about reaping age she ran off and was found by Grover who took her to Chiron and D13. She was introduced to Percy by Grover after the 74th games and world's with them for the rebellion.
Grover Underwood
Set undercover as a tribute escort why working with Percy, he's worked in disguised for multiple tribute escort positions, including D4. He's quick to find demigods tributes and tries to keep them alive best he can in his positions. He also tries to help people escape their districts when he can.
Luke Castellan
Took care of Annabeth when she was still in D3,was reaped right before he turned 18 and was the Victor of his games. Had started with a rebellious look on the Capital but President Nomiki took interest in him and steered his hatred towards Hermes and other similar gods instead. He's one of few from districts to be given a capital position, now assisting the head Game Maker despite knowing what the games are like.
Thaila Grace
Formally born in the capital, she was separated from her younger brother when their mother gave him up to President Nomiki. As she grew she became very anti-Capital, and when her mother died she was found by Artemis first before news reached the President. Artemis took her in as a hunter and she joined the rebellion. She had once been close with Luke, but drifted apart when she saw what he was becoming.
Jason Grace
Jason is the youngest of all Zeus/Jupiter's kids at the moment, he was abandoned by his birth mother and taken in by President Nomiki when he was still quite young. Despite this, Hera/Juno took attention to him and made sure that he wouldn't become a repeat of Nomiki. Why he had not the best guardians, he continued to keep a big heart and was ultimately tasked as the tribute escort for district 2 why still pretty young himself. He's not aware of the rebellion as no one really considered pulling him into it, but he's very much supportive of tributes best he can. He is escort for the 74th-75th games.
Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano
Reyna and her sister were born in district 2, but their father had became high enough in ranking military wise, they were moved to the capital. Shortly after their father passed and they were cared for by Circe for a short time before she went missing. Leaving just her and her sister.
At a certain point her sister ran into and joined the Amazons, leaving her in the Capital on her own. She grew to know Jason and often studied with him. She soon joined D13 after the 74th games, working alongside her sister and others in the rebellion.
Bianca Di Angelo
Bianca was born in District 1 with her younger brother Nico, early on she been taken in by Artemis but was captured by peacekeepers and had been rigged to be reaped for the 74th games. She had trusted D4's Percy Jackson and followed him closely as well as the other demigods that had found eachother during the games. She had been killed by her fellow tribute from District 1, making Percy promise to look for her little brother if he survived.
Silena Beauregard
Silena was the female tribute from district 8 for the 74th games, she had allied with other demigods that had been reaped that year and had fallen in love with District 2's Charles Beckendorf. She was killed by a acid rain beast during one of the game arena's events why trying to defend the others.
Charles Beckendorf
Charles was born into District 2,he had managed to be led to his other half siblings in that area. Immediately taken up caring for himself and four younger siblings. He was reaped for the 74th games and allied with the other demigods reaped that year. He fell in love with D8's Silena Beauregard and was close friends with D10's Lee Fletcher and was saddened by his death. He died why blowing up a enemy tribute's camp.
Lee Fletcher
Lee Fletcher was born into District 10, he had taken in his younger four half siblings and helped where he could around the District. He was reaped for the 74th games and was well liked by the capital viewers for his more laid back and nurturing nature. He joined in with the other demigods that year and was the group's medic. He was the second of them killed when he stayed back to let the others escape why he held off District 1 and 7's male tributes. He was killed by District 1's tribute by his head being smashed in, yet shortly after his death the tribute was swarmed and killed by a unkindness of ravens sent by the mourning furious godly twins outside of game maker's controls. The death really sticking with viewers afterwards even without seeing the full attack.
Nico Di Angelo
Youngest brother of Bianca, he already was suppose to be sneaked out to D13 after his sister joined the hunt. However, her forced reaping left him alone in District 1. Percy found him after the games, why their relationship is tense Nico still somewhat trusts Percy. Percy manages to find a way to let him take him back to D4 to live with him and his mom and stepfather in Victor row. He still can be reaped, but his name will be add amongst D4's tributes instead.
Will Solace
The third, now second oldest of his half siblings, Will was born in D10 and was taken care of by both his mother and older brothers. He was devastated after his eldest brother Lee was reaped the 74th, then he had been reaped for the third quarter quell, but his older brother Michael Yew volunteered in his stead. He's protective of his siblings and greatly loved by his district. He's one of their best medics.
Michael Yew
Michael Yew was the second and now oldest of his siblings. He was born in D10 and had lost his mother after she was punished for making bows on her own merit. He's a small ball of attitude but is greatly valued as a hunter and a medic in his district. He's often called "Raven" for how he looks when running or jumping from place to place to get somewhere. The nickname only strengthening after Lee's death.
He shocks others by volunteering for his younger brother during the 75th reaping, which most didn't expect volunteers for. His attitude was actually a charming feature to capital citizens, some finding it amusing. Though many underestimate him for his size.
Jake Mason
After Charles Beckendorf's death Jake became the oldest of his siblings,he was reaped for the 75th games hardly a year after. Being from a career district he definitely has more people thinking he has a chance, especially when the strength and skills his brother had shown the year prior.
I'll add more but this main gist of characters for my idea hdgsf
Yes it's gonna be more an excuse to write Jake x Michael... ^^'
I'm thinking so much about this it's taken my brain.

WELP it’s become unavoidable
how about a Riordanverse one because the new episode came out yesterday
so every country has a Jaegar unit, you know? America’s is the biggest, then Japan, and then idk from there but you get the point
welp. Greece
they have twelve total, each named after a Greek Mythology deity, and the unit is called the Pantheon
the leader of the unit, Zeus, is piloted by siblings Jason and Thalia Grace. it’s technically… the second biggest, but they’ll deny the extra three and a half feet Poseidon has on them til the day they die
Poseidon is second-in-command and piloted by husband and wife Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase. it’s got a bigass trident and water canons. one time they shoved Ares right into the Mediterranean because of a petty argument😇
Hades…… technically is also taller than Zeus. but the pilots tend to be quiet, so who would know that? Nico di Angelo lost his sister and copilot in battle, but her replacement, Hazel Levesque, is quite lovely and they get along great. it’s pitch black and carries a scythe like some kind of grim reaper
Demeter, often sent as a guard on diplomatic missions. she’s piloted by half sisters Katie and Miranda Gardner
Ares. the ‘war god.’ piloted by Clarisse LaRue, who managed to win a fight on her own after her copilot and boyfriend, Chris Rodriguez, was knocked out. she lasted four minutes solo-piloting and kicked a very large kaiju’s ass
Athena was piloted by Annabeth Chase in her rookie days, before Poseidon was officially commissioned. now it’s run by Malcolm Pace. she’s a solo rig, but big enough to be pushing the label. she makes up for it in agility
Apollo has the longest range accurate projectile weapons out of all of them except for its design’s twin, Artemis. fun fact about the ‘twins’— they both used to be double-pilot, but in back to back battles, each lost a pilot. as they were being rebuilt, they were modified to be solo. Apollo is run by Austin Knowles and previously Michael Yew (deceased), and Artemis is run by Reyna Avila Ramirez-Arellano and previously Zoë Nightshade (deceased)
Hephaestus was actually made to be piloted remotely. back at home base (fittingly named Olympus), there is a small group of engineers that cycles through battles. Leo Valdez (married to Jason Grace and the head of Jaegar engineering), Nyssa Barrera (lead mechanic at Olympus) and Harley Barrera (young but very bright; passed initiation in half the registered time). anyways Hephaestus has a giant hammer and its arms turn into flamethrowers (:
Aphrodite is piloted by wives Piper and Shel McLean— fitting for her namesake, the goddess of love. she’s not built for stealth, as she is bright pink, but hey. she has knives and sonar weapons; what more could you want
Hermes was once piloted by Luke Castellan and Travis Stoll— one dead, the other retired. it is now run by Cecil Markowitz and Ellis Wakefield (partners)
Dionysus is small enough to be piloted solo, and it is, by Pollux. no first or last. he says relationships are for the weak (and he’s kidding………. probably)
now the techies at the command center are referred to as Hera, as they’re the other pillar of the Pantheon’s function
Olympus is in charge of protecting Greece and the whole Mediterranean, so they have to get places fast
the Big 3 each have a special way of transportation— Zeus has high-precision thrusters so it can fly, Poseidon can literally walk across the bottom of the ocean and is completely waterproof, and Hades can “teleport” with shadow travel tech within dark spaces and has advanced camouflage as well
between the three of them, they can pretty much get everyone where they need to be
during the time period where Annabeth still piloted Athena and Percy was in training, he trained a lot with his best friend Grover— they were highly drift compatible and kicked ass in the simulator. they have ghost drift tho, which is sometimes inconvenient during missions when they’re in two completely different places, but they think it’s funny otherwise
back at Olympus, Will Solace is the head medic. somehow Nico ends up in his office a lot. the others are starting to get suspicious. I’m sure it’s fine🥰
Connor Stoll was in the cadet program and went through all the training with his older brother, even piloted Hermes once, but he didn’t like the feeling of someone in his head. not even Travis. so……. he ditched and decided stealing decommissioned Jaegar parts was a better use of his time. not even to build his own, just cause he’s an adrenaline junkie. when his bf is sent to arrest him there’s an interesting conversation that has to happen there
the cadet program for Olympus is also funny because there’s just so many people to train them?? so there’s different classes and shit built into their schedules and Athena is actually the main overseer
Zeus teaches history of like the Jaegars and Pantheon history
Poseidon teaches combat, and Percy is happy to let Annabeth demonstrate all the techniques on him (but oh lord watching the two of them spar)
Hades teaches drifting shit and run the simulator
Demeter is all about international relations, learning other languages, and working with other Jaegar units around the world
Ares runs the workout program💀 Clarisse will kick all their asses and then when they’re all laying on the floor dYING that’s when Chris will be like “all right guys time for the cooldown! gimme a hundred jumping jacks and fifty pushups”
Apollo, Artemis, and Dionysus teach xenobiology🥰 we’re here to learn about kaiju! and also where to hit them.
Hephaestus is all about showing the pilots how their Jaegar actually works— all the inner workings and engineering shit
Aphrodite teaches emotional connections (because gods know none of these military idiots are very good at that) to strengthen drift
Hermes is mostly in charge of recruiting and introduction. they teach short classes in regular schools all over the place about the Greek Jaegar Program and the Pantheon
anyways I kinda wanna talk about bot design later but I have too many drafts so it’ll have to wait
Love how Pacific Rim became its own genre of fanfic AUs because the concept of soulmate-powered giant robots was just that good.

Percy v Jason could’ve been about anything, Jason had exactly one person looking for him and it’s implied that Octavian didn’t really look, and Percy had his entire camp looking for him, Jason only reunited with his sister because Thalia was out looking for Percy (talk about a punch in the face. Jason’s own sister is looking for this missing son of Poseidon, but Jason doesn’t know if anyone is looking for him), and then Jason arrives at Camp Jupiter to learn that he’s been replaced by Percy, when nobody at CHB would ever consider Jason as a replacement for Percy. Yet somehow, they fought because of possession, not because of anything else, or even just ideology differences (Jason considered leaving Nico to die, suggesting this in front of Hazel, but Percy cannot begin to understand leaving a friend behind to certain death. Percy should’ve attacked Jason right then)
You've hit the nail on the head literally Riordan had SO MUCH to work with. Like with a lot of things with hoo - all the elements were there for something so spectacular and RR manages to choose a route that's so lackluster.
With how much buildup the fight between Percy and Jason had (being that this battle was on the literal cover of the book) I was really expecting something explosive with a lot more narrative significance. Riordan had planted a few seeds of potential animosity between them as they were both trying to automatically assume the leader position (which is also what happened with  Thalia and Percy) but that’s really as far as RR takes it, and then pulls such a lame move with their “fight” not really being a fight between them at all but ghosts.
On Jason’s end, he really could’ve been boiling with this whole inferiority complex thing. Like you said, he’s at CHB for months, he sees everyone just overcome with worry for Percy, all trying to get him back, and then he waltz back into his own camp and the entire ordeal is so wrapped up in formality and procedure that anyone that might be happy to see him can’t even really act on it. Percy gets tackled by his girlfriend. Reyna stiffly calls him a former colleague. Ouch. And it’s not exactly as if Jason was trying to become a leader at CHB, but if I came back to my home camp and found out the guy who had been there for like a week and half had been so amazing that he’d been elevated to my status and was overtly blasé about the entire deal, I’d start to get a little agitated.
And then you could really drive in with this whole Thalia angle. The fact that he first finds Thalia again because she was searching for Percy. Percy has much more shared recent history with Thalia. You could have Jason over hear conversations between Annabeth and Percy where they’re talking about Thalia and there’s such a familiarity there that comes with fighting alongside someone for years and Jason starts to get that burning sensation of jealousy. (Not to mention, people regularly comment on how similar Percy and Thalia are, while Jason gets comments on how dissimilar he and Thalia are, so again, ouch.)
And then the ideological differences!! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but their fatal flaws were set up to clash one another perfectly. Percy would sacrifice the world to save a friend. Jason would never allow himself to do such a thing. That whole discussion on whether they should rescue Nico would be the instance that Percy starts to side eye Jason like who the fuck do you think you are.
Finally, and perhaps most significantly - Percy and Jason are symbolic figureheads of the Greek v Roman tension. Their fight absolutely should have elements of that whole debacle within it. (And I remember when the cover for moa came out that’s exactly what we thought their fight was going to be about).
Like, this fight really could have been the boiling point of all of these factors. It could have been the Percy v Thalia fight 2.0 where we just watch their powers escalate and are reminded that fights between big three kids are dangerous. Instead we got an uninspired battle that was frankly just boring.

Reyna and Octavian as Foils
Looking for more? Here's my master list of Octavian analysis.
Reyna and Octavian are foils to each other in many ways.
Octavian wears his heart on his sleeve, expressing his thoughts and opinions through emotion, raising his voice, and generally dramatic gestures. Yet, at the same time, his actions are actually quite analytical and logical. To the point of almost being cynical.
On the other hand Reyna is very stoic. She rarely raises her voice and talks with restraint and composure. It’s not often that a character can tell what she’s really thinking through her expressions and tone of voice alone. Yet, she often makes decisions based on a gut feeling. She has a strong amount of scepticism when it comes in prophecies and legends, but in the here-and-now she will trust her instincts.
Interestingly, both characters will often make quick decisions in the heat of the moment, but with very different thought processes.
Both of them also attempt to achieve the ideal of being “Roman” but what they do so differently. We have a quote from Son of Neptune about Lupa’s tenants. And the goddess is a good guide:
Demigods like Percy were still responsible for carrying on Roman traditions in modern times – fighting monsters, serving the gods, protecting mortals and upholding the memory of the empire. [Son of Neptune, 36]
We can see that’s a long list, and the last point is especially broad. Which monsters should they fight, and which ones do they make a truce or even ally with? Does serving the gods prevail over protecting mortals, which is more important? And, lastly, the empire lasted a long time and even within a single time period there was a diversity of things that was deemed “important”.
So while the general ideas hold the same, each character is going to have a different interpretation and understanding of that. And I think we can see that with Reyna and Octavian, even down to the emperor they look up to. For Octavian it’s Augustus, the first emperor, a son of Apollo*, someone who fought and schemed his way to the top but managed to end an age of warfare in the process. For Reyna it’s Diocletian, the last pagan emperor*, a son of Jupiter*, someone whose parents were once slaves, who fought his way to the top, and eventually retired peacefully.
*Riordanverse history
How Reyna and Octavian Lead
Reyna herself seems to be the kind of leader who believes in great heroic deeds on behalf of her people, often going out solo to face the greatest challenge.
Meanwhile, we have Octavian. His leadership style seems far more unit-based. Everyone acts as one, as per his orders. He’s rarely seen away from the central unit when it comes to combat. Notably different from Reyna.
Examples:
- Battle in Son of Neptune: Reyna is seen in the air, riding Scipio, facing off against Polybotes. While Octavian is on the ground with the First and Second legionaries.
- Mark of Athena: Reyna hunts down Annabeth while Octavian leads the majority of the legionaries against the docked Argo II.
- House of Hades: Reyna chooses to go on a quest, alone; something that strikes Octavian as unthinkable (and potentially unforgivable).
All of these indicate a general trend for how Reyna and Octavian choose to lead. Neither option is worse or better.
Leaders They Admire - Diocletian:
We also know that Reyna is a fan of Diocletian (along with Jason).
“Reyna and I used to talk about Diocletian,” [Jason] said. “We both kind of idolized the guy as a leader.”
We can see that, in the Riordanverse, that Diocletian is a son of Jupiter. And upheld the old Roman pagan society – notably by executing thousands of Christians.
“He wasn’t a total villain,” Jason said. “Yeah, he persecuted Christians, but otherwise he was a good ruler. He worked his way up from nothing by joining the legion. His parents were former slaves . . . or at least his mom was. Demigods know he was a son of Jupiter - the last demigod to rule Rome. He was the first emperor ever to retire, like, peacefully, and give up his power. He was from Dalmatia, so he moved back there and built a retirement palace. The town of Split grew up around…” [House of Hades]
And in Blood of Olympus,
Reyna used to dream about going there with Jason to admire their favourite emperor’s home. She pictured romantic walked with him through the old city, sunset picnic on the parapets. […] Don’t be bitter, she chided herself. Aeneas suffered, too. So did Romulus, Diocletian and all the rest. Romans don’t complain about hardship.
We can see Reyna’s own story reflected here. Reyna wasn’t someone from a great family in New Rome. When her sister decided to join the Amazons instead, Reyna was left without a support system at all. Yet she rose quickly through the ranks. And eventually “retired” peacefully (by joining the Hunt).
And while Reyna’s thoughts on Diocletian are pretty limited, we can assume Reyna and Jason had a similar thought process. I would even argue that Reyna might have been the one to idolise him more since it’s Reyna who first assumed Jason would go to Split to meet her. Not to mention her romanisation of the the palace.
Even her understanding of bitterness and how to process disapointment is filtered through this idealisation of Roman figures. Aeneas and Romulus are obvious, they are mythical heroes, but Diocletian was a real historical figure. Yet to her, they all represent who she is striving to be. Who she ought to be.
On that point, let’s talk about Jason and Reyna for a moment. The emperor Jason and Reyna bonded over was a son of Jupiter. They both idolised this emperor. And for that reason, a part of me wonders if Reyna might have been one of the people who placed their expectations upon Jason as the son of Jupiter.
She expected him to live up to the legacy of their favourite emperor: Diocletian.
They were close friends, of course. But it’s possible that Jason, in his heart, knew they couldn’t be anything more. Even before coming to Camp Half-Blood, Jason tried to resist the pressure of those expectations. And he might have feared that Reyna wouldn't accept him if he failed to meet those high standards.
And in Mark of Athena, it's Reyna who comments on how Jason has "changed". But I would argue Jason has simply come to understand himself more.
“And Jason… well, he has changed. He seems distant, no longer quite Roman.”
Part of Reyna’s romantic feelings may very well have been simple admiration, which was born from the façade Jason presented to the world. Jason did everything he could to be a great "son of Jupiter". And when he came back changed? I think Reyna lost some of the admiration – and therefore the romantic feelings. Not that that stopped her feelings of friendship. But it certainly made her confused and bitter (I'll get into that later).
Not only that, but they both have very different recollections of their time in Camp Jupiter:
Her four years at Camp Jupiter hasn’t been easy, but they’d been the best time of Reyna’s life. [Blood of Olympus 59]
Compared with, only a couple chapters earlier, Jason’s thoughts:
This has been the story of his life, he thought bitterly. Everyone had always watched him, expecting him to lead the way. From the moment he’d arrived at Camp Jupiter, the Roman demigods had treated him like a prince in waiting. Despite his attempts to alter his destiny […] he had been made praetor anyway. [Blood of Olympus 28]
Overall, I think at minimun the fact that they shared a favourite emperor - one so intrinsically tied to their hopes and desires, their understanding of leadership - placed those expectations on Jason. For Reyna, it was a choice to take up the mantle of praetor, but Jason it was a duty thrust upon him.
Diocletian was a die-hard pagan, one who persecuted Christians. But what Reyna and Jason seem to have admired was how he reorganised the empire, stabilising it. His reforms helped fend of the Western half’s fall – and enabled the Eastern half to flourish.
This is the emperor that Reyna admires most. Not a conqueror, but a strong leader who brought stability and who retired once their job was done. And the way Diocletian chose to retire peacefully reflects a fundamental Roman ideal. One seen in the story of Cincinnatus returning to his farm after holding the Dictatorship for only fifteen days. An ideal Reyna fuflils by joining the Hunt.
Leaders They Admire - Augustus
“Besides, the first day of August is most auspicious – the month named after my ancestor Augustus. And you know how he united the Romans?”
“He seized power and became emperor,” Mike rumbled.
Octavian waved aside the comment. “Nonsense. He saved Rome by becoming First Citizen. He wanted peace and prosperity, not power! Believe me, Mike, I intend to follow his example. I will save New Rome and, when I do, I will remember my friends.” [BOO 66]
So let’s get into Octavian. It’s important to note that Octavian is speaking in front of an audience here (Jacob), so the words he says are measured. But I think they give us a good enough insight.
We know that Octavian admires his namesake (and ancestor), Augustus. And we can see here what Octavian admired. The fact that Augustus stopped the 50-year-long streak of civil wars that had ravaged the Republic.
Obviously, he’s dismissive of Augustus’ less than moral means of getting into power here – but we know that Octavian follows Augustus’s example there are as well. Augustus when he was “Octavian” was ruthless. But after he was in charge, after he changed his name? He changed his tune, switching from an image of power to one of benevolence.
And much like how Reyna and Jason can look passed Diocletian’s cruelty against the Christians, Octavian also sees the best of his ideal leader. “Peace and prosperity” might not be some hollow promise. But an end goal of Octavian's.
Not that this is the last war they wil have to fight. Octavian, more than any other character, is aware of the impeding threat that is the Triumvirate.
As I’ve also discussed, Octavian didn’t hate the Greeks. Not really. Not until they attack his city, at the point they (from his perspective) declared war.
Summary
I think it's fascinating that, by Riordan lore, Octavian admired the first emperor while Reyna admired the last (pagan) emperor. Both rulers came to power during a time of instability. And both were able to lay out a foundation of prosperity. Augustus was able to pass away peacefully, dying of old age; Diocletian was able to retire peacefully, living out his days in his palace.
Interestingly, neither of these emperors count among the martial emperor, the ones famous for their military prowess. Augustus had Agrippa. Diocletian had Maximian.
There's is one notable difference - one that I think is important. Augustus was a son of Apollo, Diocletian a son of Jupiter.
Augustus brought Egypt into the empire (it was still technically independent until that point). He patroned a golden age of art - integrating the Hellenistic influence that had been such a controversial idea a couple generations before. He ruled to the end of his days, never letting go of power.
Meanwhile, Diocletian's retirement, as I've mentioned, mirrors an older ideal. One of the Republic. Where power was something a person only help for a short time. And even that power ought to be shared.
Neither interpretation is wrong. But I think we can see where Reyna and Octavian's enmity might have begun. Reyna would never allow Apollo to become the patron god of the legion.
The Legion That Failed
I’m going to on a little side-track for a moment, just to discuss why Reyna might be resistant to changing their patron god (Octavian’s idea). We get a few hints throughout the series that there was other groups of Roman demigods out in the world, at one point in the past. We also know that Reyna is aware of them.
“I think – well, this is the part I don’t know, but Reyna always said there were many lost legions. The Twelfth founded Camp Jupiter.” [Son of Neptune]
Some carried tattered lightning-bolt banners of the Twelfth Legion, Fifth Cohort – Michael Varus’s doomed expedition from the 1980s. Others carried standards and insignia Hazel didn’t recognise, as if they’d died at different times, on different quests – maybe not even from Camp Jupiter. [Son of Neptune]
The name “Camp Jupiter” shows this particular legion’s strong association to Jupiter. He is their patron god. The eagle’s power comes from Jupiter himself. It’s not so strange of a concept that the other groups (potentially in the form of a legion, potentially as something else) had other patron gods.
However, they have all failed to last. They were defeated or simply withered to nothing.
So perhaps Reyna sees the changes Octavian was proposing not as starting a “new era” but instead an abandonment of the divine patron who had seen them through the ages It would harm the legion, not help it.
Warfare, Peace, and Stability
Reyna
Reyna seems to have the general attitude that she will only fight a defensive war, though she is aware that is not the “Roman way”. As I’ve discussed, her ideal emperor wasn’t a conqueror – he was more of an administrator (Diocletian did wage wars, but mostly he worked on fixed the mess of an empire he had come to rule, such as reconquering Egypt when it declared independence).
Reyna acknowledges the Roman way here:
“You see, Romans have always believed that offence is the best defence.”
[…] “It doesn’t have to be that way,” Annabeth said. “We’ve got to work together, or Gaia will destroy us both.”
“I agree,” Reyna said. “But is cooperation possible?” [Mark of Athena 39]
Even after the attack on New Rome, Reyna is hesitant to go into full war-mode.
The blond scarecrow-looking kid, Octavian, was speaking to the mob shaking his fist. Piper couldn’t her him, but the gist was obvious: We need to kill those Greeks!
Reyna, the praetor, stood to one side, her face tight with suppressed emotion. Bitterness? Anger? Piper wasn’t sure. [Mark of Athena]
Reyna is not ready to call it ‘war’ yet.
“Reyna,” she said, “what happened at Camp Jupiter was Gaia’s fault. Eidolons, possessing spirits–”
“Save your explanations,” Reyna said. “You’ll need them for the trial.”
The dogs snarled and inched forward. This time, it didn’t seem to matter to them that Annabeth was telling the truth. [Mark of Athena 249]
Reyna isn’t there to listen to Annabeth’s ‘reasons’. She might not be keen for this war, but it isn’t due to her trusting the Seven (outside of Jason).
“It wasn’t me!”
“It doesn’t matter!” Reyna snapped. [Mark of Athena 249]
And again, Reyna rejects Annabeth’s attempts to tell the Romans about the eidolons. For all the Seven’s assumptions about her listening to them – Reyna at this moment isn’t ready to hear it. She retains her scepticism because of that she’s between a rock and a hard place. Does she accept this war or does she accept the excuses the Greeks? She wants to do neither.
“You see?” Reyna said bitterly. “The spear is thrown. Our people are at war.”
“Not if I succeed,” Annabeth said.
Reyna’s expression looked the same as it had at Camp Jupiter when she realised Jason had found another girl. The praetor was too alone, too bitter and betrayed to believe anything could go right for her again. Annbeth waited for her to attack. Instead, Reyna flicked her hand. The metal dogs backed away. “Annabeth Chase,” she said, “When we meet again, we will be enemies on the field of battle.”
The praetor turned and walked across the rampart, her greyhounds behind her.
[Mark of Athena 251-2]
In this scene, Reyna allows Annabeth to go off and return to the Argo II. And it’s Annabeth’s words here, ‘not if I succeed’ that convince Reyna to let her go.
And this happens again in House of Hades,
“A Roman leader returning the most important Greek statue to Camp Half-Blood – she knows that could prevent a war.”
“This isn’t a trick,” Rachel added. “We’re not lying. Ask your dogs.”
The metallic greyhounds didn’t react. Reyna stroked Aurum’s head thoughtfully. “The Athena Parthenos… so the legend is true.” [House of Hades 252]
Once again, Reyna is swayed by the idea of preventing a war that has already begun. Logically, this doesn’t make a sense, but I think it’s a key element of her character. And to see it happen multiple times – I don’t think it’s a momentary thing. A potential war is a completely different beast that a war that is already raging.
Because Reyna knows that to be an ideal Roman leader, she might fight. She must lead the legion in this war. After all she says this to Percy:
“The praetorship will be yours for the taking. Together, you and I could expand the power of Rome. We could raise an army and find the Doors of Death, crush Gaia’s forces once and for all.”
But in action, Reyna doesn’t seem to think like this. Her goal isn’t to expand Roman power. It’s to solidify it.
But Reyna is ultimately burdened by this question of what it means to uphold the memory of the empire. The need to expand, to build, and – most of all – to conquer is a fundamental part of Rome. Reyna doesn’t go against tradition very often. Except on this note. And I think that bothers her.
I wonder if that is the conflict her character is undergoing throughout Mark of Athena. Why she seems so tired, bitter, and on edge. So knows that as a Roman she should be readying for war.
Octavian is ready to fight this battle. He’s out for blood. Like a proper Roman. So what about her? What’s stopping her? I think this might be why she seems to flip back and forth between being against the Seven and helping them in MoA, and even in HoH.
Because if they are at war – then she must fight. If the war has yet to begin then she can stop it. And if you are wondering what I mean by her flipping back and forth.
Reyna:
1. Agreed to bring the Seven to trial, potentially to execute them
2. Gave the legion to the location of Camp Half-Blood [probably]
Annabeth wanted to sob. Camp Half-Blood was the only real home she’d ever known, and in a bid for friendship she had told Reyna exactly where to find it. She couldn’t leave it at the mercy of the Romans and travel halfway around the world. [Mark of Athena 250]
Why is this the case?
Well, Jason is the one to explain to the legion his version of events. And he doesn’t necessarily say where Camp Half-Blood is.
Jason explained how he’d arrived at Camp Half-Blood without his memory, and how he’d gone on a quest with Piper and Leo to rescue the goddess Hera (or Juno, take your pick – she was equally annoying in Greek or Roman).
There this isn’t the conversation Annabeth is referring to – no, it’s where she tells Reyna, in private, her life story.
She talked about how she had run away when she was only seven, finding her friends Luke and Thalia and making her way to Camp Half-Blood on Long Island. She described the camp and her years growing up there.
As Annabeth predicts, the Romans seem to know exactly where they are going after this. They beeline it to New York (coming to settle and start scouting Long Island within a few days of leaving Charleston).
While, sure, Octavian could have seen it in an augury or possibly from Nero (if he was already working with the emperor at that point).
But Annabeth at least seems to think Reyna will inform the legion. And, at least, on face value she seems to do it.
Octavian
Obviously, Octavian doesn’t have the same qualms about this war that Reyna does. The war has begun – that’s not up for debate. And while Reyna stands back, Octavian takes over, rallying the legion.
When it comes to war, Octavian is one who veers towards the tradition.
“The Romans have honour to think about. They’ve been attacked. They’ll shoot first and ask questions posthac.” [Mark of Athena 107]
Yet despite Octavian’s aggression, he see that the war takes a physical toll on him. In the twelve days between Charleston and the meeting on the rooftop, Octavian’s condition has worsened.
Octavian stood to one side, thin and pale, his eyes red-rimmed from sleeplessness or anger. [House of Hades 247]
In Blood of Olympus, we see this again,
He stopped so close that Nico could see the bloodshot veins in his pale watery eyes. His face was gaunt. [Blood of Olympus]
But also the mental toll, Octavian was certainly losing his grip on reality in the final battle.
Octavian's laughter was brittle and quite insane.
With that in mind, let’s talk about Octavian’s intentions when it comes to this war. Because I don’t believe it was wholesale destructions into very late.
In Mark of Athena, he says,
“Surrender to Rome!”
In House of Hades, he says,
“I hope you’ve come to discuss surrender terms.”
So we can see that Octavian has a strong focus on ‘surrender’ in both books. These are his opening statements when dealing with the Greeks.
And it’s even possible, there was a third attempt at getting a surrender in Blood of Olympus. This would have occurred just before the councillor meeting at Camp Half-Blood. It would explain why Will Solace seems to be hate Octavian. And why Jake Mason seems to have heard Octavian’s last name, then forgotten it, in his comment “Octavian what’s-his-name”.
Now the question of ‘why’ comes. What terms does Octavian want to bring to the table. Well, as I’ve send before, Octavian does seem to have locked onto “unity” at some point.
And while, by the time we get to the quote below, Octavian has given up on getting the Greeks to surrender, he stills mentions the idea twice.
[Octavian] rose and stretched. “Don’t worry, old friend. Our siege teams have the Greek camp surrounded. Our eagles have complete air superiority. The Greeks aren’t going anywhere until we’re ready to strike. In eleven days, all my forces will be in place. My little surprises will be prepared. On August first, the Feast of Spes, the Greek camp will fall. […] We demigods will be strong and unified, as we were in the old days of the empire.” [Boo 65]
And we can see that this goal of unity under Rome is Octavian’s interpretation of upholding the memory of the empire.
“We eliminate the division. We wipe out the Greeks. We return the gods to their proper manifestation as Roman. Once the gods are restored to their full power, Gaia will not dare rise.”
Obviously, at this point Octavian has given up on the Greeks surrendering, so his plan has been modified. But the general gist is the same. He wishes to eliminate the division and make the gods fully Roman. It seems to me reasonably likely that Octavian desired the Greek to surrender to Rome and join it. This would have expanded the legion’s power and unified all the demigods under one banner.
I think, as well, Apollo would have been more willing to go along with that plan. I doubt Apollo would have been willing to overlook the death of his kids but having the join the legion would solve a lot of headaches (literally).
Summary
Much like any good foils, Octavian and Reyna seems to have almost-aligning goals. Stability and strength for the legion. But they differ on a few key points - and that has caused them to come into conflict.

nico, hazel, rachel, reyna, and jason as a team in a superhero au 👁‍🗨(ik this is a lot of characters so if u don't feel like doing All of them ofc don't feel obligated to!!)
Omg omg so :
I actually am cheating because I have a vague X-men au already :
Nico :
vigilante 1 he’s not here to win popularity points.
Hades fell in love with his team-women with powers of the earth, magic, and herself and once defeating Nyx and taking her powers away they were able to give their kids all that they were and could be
With that in mind Nico takes after Maria (clearly favoring her appearance) but he isn’t blessed particularly with his family’s powers outside of his father-though he shows talent with Nyx’s and an aptitude for the theories and inner workings on everyone and everything-very curious and has the drive to back it up (a side effect from his momma-can’t back down when you know what you want)
Called the ghost king not because he truly commands them but because they listen to him he just has a way with people when he believes in himself
Loremaster and co leader of the team-stepped down to co leader for his own health-was made leader in the first place when Bianca passed. Is the one who gets the final say over battle plans -though often defers to Reyna to it
Was apprenticed under Hestia for magic- still does apprenticeships under different people in all diff positions-knows everyone
Their usual spy
Absolutely still fights with swords will cut a bitch. Uses two-gifted from his father and Hestia-one burns and one freezes. Either way it makes for some drama.
Hazel :
As said w Nico is her family’s legacy. Shows active promise in the earth and magic-true power-though lacks the technical precision she wants-so still is apprenticed under Hecate and studies under her brother and family.
Is 100% the teams powerhouse. Wants to be more in charge with decisions ect but admits she doesn’t always think everything through...and she is a lil young
Not ready to be the face of the team quite yet-knows Jason/Reyna feel uncomfortable filling in for her siblings-it’s not their place but Bianca fell and Nico just couldn’t do it. And she’s..she’s just not ready
Absolutely still rides a horse into battle-gifted from the Amazon’s themselves
Fights with her mothers scythe
Rachel :
her dad got in trouble for some stuff and she started working as a hero-she eventually joined their team-they needed four people. To their surprise when she met the fates something clicked and she now has visions of the future
Feels guilt for not seeing Bianca (who was her gf) fall-not saving her-being there and just..failing-how could she look them in the eyes? She didn’t leave the team (Nico begged her not to) but she just..couldn’t be on the ground anymore. Not again.
She helps as their medic and patches them up when they get back-otherwise she helps Nico w research or works on her visions
She knows Hades blames her-she knows he does. Maybe she is a lil over dedicated to them now but she needs to make it up to them. She knows her guilt messes with her vision but she’ll just learn to live with it-after all at least she gets to learn to live with it.
Worked on a team w Percy and gang but just couldn’t after their breakup and Annabeth being mean to her when Percy and her were dating-it just wasn’t professional-it was effecting their jobs so she has experience
Reyna :
Her and her sister shipwrecked onto the lost island of the Amazon’s. They were blessed with their abilities and trained but while her sister found comfort with them Reyna..she just wanted to go home-wherever that may be. It wasn’t here. More and more people get shipwrecked and she doesn’t think anything of it but eventually it clicks what’s wrong-the women join the island-the rest disappear-she flees with the prisoners at night-taking a ship (she knows her sister kept them from following her-she just knows it)
She starts “New Rome” with the survivors-many of which have no one to return to and keeps up her blessings-to her shock one by one they’re claimed or show signs of gifts and she just knows-at least it was the right thing to do-she does her best to command them-to lead them and ignore every bad feeling she has
She starts a team with Jason, Octavian, and a few others-eventually they’re betrayed and while Octavian faced punishment it doesn’t change the fact that people died and Jason and her are alone again.
Nico’s team helped fight Octavian during his rise to villainy and in the fight Bianca fell-saving them-helping them-the least she’s could do was fill her space.
And she does she doesn’t know it and she can never admit it (she hates herself for even thinking it) but Bianca dying might of been the best thing for her-she found a family, she found a home, Jason is still with her and she has siblings now-Nico just imprinted on her and Hazel thinks she’s the coolest and shes like half sure Rachel has a crush on her-she still is thought highly of-still commands-but it’s different-it’s different when you know they still see you as a person and not an obstacle to get around
She has no powers that help herself but she can boost anyone else’s
She fights with anything and everything
Jason :
While on the run from their father (a highly respected anti meta politician-a meta himself just trying to hold onto power) Thalia manages to get him on a ship heading out-it doesn’t matter where-he cries and screams as Thalia fights and falls distracting their enemies-it doesn’t matter-nothing breaks Thalia’s barriers-and once sound finally comes out he’s far enough away it doesn’t matter
Is saved by Reyna and brought to New Rome-on a mission he is taken by the wolves and while he comes back he’s never the same
Werewolf baby
Had wings like his dad but his father removed them-later on it’ll turn out he didn’t even need them to make him fly (turns out his mother was a meta too)-along with the lightning stuff but doesn’t like using it-makes him sad, mad, scared, he just. Can’t.
That changes as he grows closer to Reyna and Octavian but when Octavian betrays them any words of comfort are just. Hollow and he’s back to square one.
Meeting the new team and attempting to click with them (Hazel didn’t like him at first. Thought he’d be mean to Nico -most guys are) he is starting to get himself again-it isn’t until an incident where he attacks Nico (as a wolf) and Nico forgives him that he realizes oh. They’re a team-and they like him no matter if he hurts them-it happens-and they’ll be there afterwards.
Yes he’s dating Nico they’re werewolves together. They had a life changing mission together and came back besties and Hazel finally stopped oppressing him every five seconds (personally the rest of the team kinda misses that..it was kinda funny)

since your hogwarts house is decided from what you value, this is my personal theory on what house the heroes of olympus character would be in + my reasons for it :
Percy Jackson : i wasn't too sure at first, but i think he's a hufflepuff since his fatal flaw is loyalty and because he values friendship, loyalty, and team work.
Annabeth Chase : i at first thought that she could be a slytherin since she's ambitious and all, but i think she's a ravenclaw. she values knowledge and enjoys learning new things just because she enjoys the feeling of having a lot of knowledge. she's wise, creative, street smart and book smart, + despises the fact that she's prideful.
Piper Mclean : i considered her being a ravenclaw at first since she posseses a lot of traits from that house, but then i remember that she values bravery the most. she always wants to be there for everyone and is willing to do anything to keep her friends and family safe, so gryffindor it is.
Jason Grace : a gryffindor through and through. no ambitions, just wants lesser responsibilities and more freedom. values bravery, chivalry, and all that gryffindor jazz.
Leo Valdez : i thought he'd be a great fit in gryffindor, but then i changed my mind and would put him in ravenclaw instead. perfect for a street smart genius like him who's insanely creative. he would probably feel less pressured being in ravenclaw and he can definitely bring some fun to that house. also, he values creativity and prefers working individually.
Frank Zhang : i hesitated at first, but then decided that he's be a greater fit in gryffindor instead. he's like the neville in this series ya know, he even managed to defeat 3 snakes i think at the same time, idk i forgot. main point is that he values bravery, friendship, + whatever gryffindors value. like he'll feel pressured at first, but then dicover that he's more than what he seems and become an excellent leader.
Hazel Levesque : still not sure if i'm being honest, but maybe gryffindor as well. she values bravery, friendship, and is determined to lead an adventurous life.
Reyna Avila Ramirez Arellano : gryffindor. basically female version of jason, just more adventurous and strict at the same time. isn't ambitious, takes her duties serious, then took off with her dead ex best friend's sister. good enough reason i think. is brave as well.
Nico Di Angelo : genuinely questioned on whether he was a hufflepuff or slytherin, but then decided that he'd be a better fit in slytherin. not too sure what he values, but i just know that he won't fit in hufflepuff. ambitious when he has a goal, his fatal flaw is grieve i think or just holding grudges, is determined, gets his job done.
Will Solace : the embodiment of a hufflepuff
Octavian : slytherin. ambitious, values power i think. smart, cunning, and is the draco malfoy of the series, just he died and was way more goal driven?

The Seven as BTS members
Frank: Yoongi (quiet but cute. Also the resemblance between their chubby wittle cheeks is uncanny)
Hazel: Taehyung (astoundingly beautiful. Going through a lot of changes from being a kid to acting like an adult)
Leo: Jin (dad jokes for daysssss)
Percy: Jungkook or Jimin (I honestly couldnt decide smh. Good at almost everything. Also duality is his middle name)
Jason: Namjoon (smart, kind and straightforward. Is a natural born leader)
Annabeth: Also Namjoon (is also a natural born leader. While Jason is more like Joon off-stage: calm and collected, Annaebeth is Joon onstage: fierce and powerful.)
Piper: Hobi (knows how to make everyone feel better with one simple gesture. Is also absolutely B R E A T H T A K I N G.)
BONUS: Reyna as Bang PD (is low key the reason the group was created, coz she let Annabeth get away with the others in MoA.)
BONUS BONUS: Nico as Manager Sejin (pops in whenever need be and helps out where he can. Also has everyone whipped for him)
