I was unreasonably excited to see Echoâs ears this episode. Like really excited.
Iâm also highly distracted with concern over him being able to get his tbb armour backâŚ
Feels like things are forever changing and Iâm not sure I can handle it đ I just hope the enormous number of unravelled threads means a new show is gonna be announced. Hopefully on the 4th đ¤
And finally, what fun it was to see him messing about with that droid hand! He should magnetise it to his armour (you know where) so he can keep it ⌠ahem ⌠handy.
As for Omega telling Emerie about the Batch⌠my poor heart canât take it!

A really underrated part of how the inhibitor chips are handled in canon is the fact that they can't be removed without an invasive procedure that has some risk. Whenever a character has his taken out itâs never necessarily an easy choice, a symbolic reminder that it takes bravery to choose not to be controlled by a system, and it gives these moments a lot more emotionality and impact because itâs not just a convenient plot device to restore or preserve their agency.
The most heroic moment Fives has is when learns he has this thing in him and he doesn't even hesitate to tell AZI to get it out, even if trying might kill him, because it so brazenly defies the way all clones have been positioned as powerless pawns whose individuality and choices ultimately won't matter in the big plan. When Rex has been activated and manages to get out just enough words to tell Ahsoka what to do to help him, it's a pretty powerful way of showing how much he trusts her at the end of their journey together throughout the war. Wrecker is the most hesitant to have his removed because he's scared of surgery but sees it's what is safest for everyone.
And thinking about it this way makes me appreciate why Rex's resistance has generally only been acting to help clones that have already willingly turned on the Empire, even though they always try not to hurt the others who may still on some level not be in control of themselves and, some could say, also need help. It makes me understand why the Batch couldn't just try to capture Crosshair at some point in season 1 and make him get his chip removed, something he'd never agree to while still under its influence.
It's implied that the Kaminoans subjected the Batch and Omega to a lot of scary and probably painful tests and procedures as they grew up - so much that Omega understands Echo being triggered by waking up hooked up to monitors and she dreads going back to being used in a lab. Fandom plays this up for angst in fanworks and rightfully calls the Kaminoans horrible for denying them agency over their own bodies in this and many other ways. Even if for a much better reason, the clone troopers who've left the Empire don't really have the right to treat their brothers that way and risk their safety when they're not in a state of being able to consent to it.
Just as none of the clones can reasonably hold themselves accountable for things they've done because of the inhibitor chips, they also can't be considered responsible for saving each other from being controlled by them. It's the Emperor and the Kaminoans that did this to all of them.

The Bet
Pairing: Kix x fem!Reader / Kix x Nurse!Reader
Words: 8,981
Tags/Warnings: 18+ only! coworkers to friends to lovers, some blood/wound care but it's very minor, fluff, smut, unprotected sex, fingering, dirty talk, oral (f receiving), a hint of a praise kink
Summary: You and Kix have been dancing around each other for months. When losing a bet finds you alone in your apartment together for the first time, sparks fly.
A/N: I honestly was not a Kix girlie before writing this, so hopefully he's not too ooc!
Previous Work | Next Work | Masterlist
âYou donât have to do this, you know.â
Kix watches you move about your small kitchen from his seat at the counter. The beer he nurses in his hand is still cool, the condensation softening the label enough for his thumb to peel, a nervous habit you notice but are too polite to mention.
You pause your stirring momentarily to throw him an exasperated look over your shoulder.Â
âI know.â
âIâm just saying you donât need to do all this for me,â he says, gesturing towards the stove where a large pot bubbles, a delicious scent wafting through the air. âPizza wouldâve been fine.â
âAnd miss the opportunity to show off my excellent cooking?â you ask with a scoff, though it lacks any real conviction.Â
You turn to face him. He looks so out of place in your tiny apartment, perched on the stool that is dwarfed by his size. His shoulders hunch as if he's trying to make himself seem smaller, a feat in itself for someone so large.Â
You try to give him a smile that's more encouraging than teasing. âNot a chance.â
He shakes his head, returning the grin with one of his own as he looks down at his hands. The smile falls away when he sees the state of the label he had been absently peeling. He grimaces and balls up the ruined paper before throwing it at the trash can, a small ping echoing through the apartment as it lands in the center of the bin.
The corner of your mouth twitches into a smirk, and you roll your eyes playfully. Kix chuckles softly, and some of the tension dissipates from the room.
It's nice to hear him laugh after the week you've both had. You'd been near dead on your feet by the time the Resolute docked on Coruscant, but you'd promised Kix a proper home-cooked meal, and you weren't about to renege on your deal. A bet was a bet, after all.
Bets between the two of you were far from an unusual occurrence. Normally, it was simple things: what they were serving in the mess for breakfast, how many hangover remedies you'd have to administer after shore leave, or even just something as silly as who could finish their work faster. It had become so common to the point that the 501st was more than used to seeing you and Kix going back and forth, betting on just about everything.
This time was no different. You'd been arguing over a patient's chart one morning, and it had escalated until the two of you had settled on a bet. Whoever could get the most patients through their physical would win.
The only thing was that, by the time the two of you finally had the opportunity to settle the score, Kix had gotten the entire company in on it, and had somehow managed to get Rex to take his side. You had been absolutely furious at the time, but you got over it quickly when he made his request.
He could have chosen anything. He could have made you stay late or fill out paperwork for a week. He could have had you do something embarrassing.
Instead, he asked you to cook him dinner.
You don't have a lot of time outside of work, so when you do, you cook. It's your favorite hobby and one you're actually pretty good at. You take great pride in it. Cooking for Kix though? That's different.
It's not that you don't want to do it. On the contrary, you're thrilled by the opportunity. It's just that you want it to be perfect.
The apartment is quiet save for the sound of your work. You have the radio playing, the volume turned low so the music is more background noise than anything. You don't mind. You've always liked the sound of rain, and it gives you the opportunity to listen for Kix.
You'd noticed over the course of your friendship that Kix is usually quiet when he's comfortable. It had taken a while, but you learned his different silences. It was the same way he analyzed you: by the cadence of your footsteps and the tone of your voice. You'd learned to read him through those subtle indicators, and he had done the same.
Right now, he's content. There's no tension in his shoulders, and his breathing is even. You know he's watching you, his eyes tracking your movements. He looks a lot more relaxed here than he does at work, which isn't surprising. You've seen each other nearly every day since the start of the war, but you've never been able to spend time together like this. You're friends, sure, but you're also attracted to him, and you'd like to think he feels the same.
You've been dancing around each other for months, but neither one is brave enough to say something about it.
You make small talk, talking about nothing and everything while you cook. It's pleasant and comfortable and nice. You can feel his eyes on you as you work. The kitchen is small enough that he can watch you easily without having to leave his seat. You know he's enjoying the show.
âSo, what are we having?â he asks.
You can hear the curiosity in his voice and grin.
When he'd made the request, he'd said he was up for anything, but you wanted it to be special. You have a plan, one that you hope he'll like.
You turn around, propping your elbows on the counter and leaning forward. He mirrors your position, and you're so close your noses almost touch.
His eyes widen in surprise, but he doesn't pull back. You tilt your head. âItâs a surprise.â
And a good one, you hoped. You werenât sure the last time you put this much effort into a single meal, but if you were going to impress him, you wanted to do it right.
You'd started the process early this morning and had been checking and rechecking your progress throughout the day. You're making a traditional Alderaanian dish, one of your favorites, and one you're pretty confident you can pull off. You're not a chef by any stretch of the imagination, but you know your way around a kitchen and have been told by those who love you that your cooking is exceptional.
You can only hope he'll agree.
Of course, this was a man who preferred to subsist entirely on ration bars and caf, who forgot to eat unless you forced him out of the medbay, but you still found yourself hoping to wow him with your familyâs recipes.
When Kix showed up at your door, you could tell that he was nervous. You were too, but you tried not to let it show. You were doing this because you liked him, not to get a reaction out of him, but the anticipation of his response was enough to make your heart flutter in your chest.
He looked more than a little disarmed at the sight of you in your civilian clothes, and the feeling was mutual. You didn't think you'd ever seen him out of armor. When you invited him inside, he pulled out a bouquet of daylilies from behind his back, sheepishly explaining that Jesse insisted he shouldnât show up empty-handed.
The bouquet heâd given you was beautiful. You didnât have a vase to put them in, so they were soaking in water in the largest coffee mug you could find with âGalaxyâs Best Nurseâ in gaudy red letters on the side. You hoped they wouldnât wilt before you could find something better to put them in. You honestly couldnât remember the last time anyone had bought you flowers.
Kix was sweet, sweeter than you ever anticipated from your first meeting. On your first day aboard the Resolute, when Captain Rex first introduced you as the resident nurse aboard the ship, Kix took one long look at you and promptly rolled his eyes.
âShe's not gonna last a week.â
Rex had looked ready to throttle him, but you merely gave him a wry grin and told him you were more than capable of doing your job.
He was quick to apologize, though you could tell he was more than a little skeptical, and the two of you had spent the better part of that first month trying to get on the other's good side. The first time he laughed at one of your jokes, it was like the floodgates opened. After that, it was easy, and the two of you quickly fell into an easy friendship.
You came to realize being blunt was just his way, though Kix was never as short with you as he was with his brothers. Jesse said it was because he had a soft spot for you, but you were more inclined to believe he just didnât want to create a hostile work environment.
That was months ago, and a lot has changed since.
You enjoyed Kix. His dry humor always caught you off guard, even if you were getting used to it. He seemed to enjoy making you laugh. And at the end of a long day, he was always the first to ask if you needed help cleaning up the medbay, always the first to offer to walk you back to your quarters.
You shared plenty of late nights together, sometimes going over patient files or stocking supplies. Other times you simply sat together in the quiet, enjoying each otherâs company.
You grew close. It was only natural.
Still, it didn't feel natural to invite him over for a home-cooked meal. You'd never been anything but professional with each other, even in private. You'd never seen him in civvies before and had certainly never imagined that his hair, longer now than youâve ever seen it, might curl a little in the humidity.
It wasn't fair, really, how much you enjoyed the sight of him.
You had spent the day wondering if this was the right decision. You worried you were reading too much into his request, that you were imagining the interest you thought you saw. But if nothing else, you hoped tonight would provide some insight.
You wanted this to go well.
You didnât know how much of that was for your sake or his.
You push back from the counter, and Kix makes no move to follow. You turn back to the stove and continue working, a grin pulling at your lips. You donât think he realizes that you can feel his gaze on you. He doesn't make any attempt to hide his staring.
The silence between you isnât uncomfortable, but there is an undercurrent of something else, a tension you're not sure what to do with. You know that you aren't the only one feeling this way. He'd been nervous when he first arrived, and though he was more at ease now, the tension hadn't dissipated.
It's not an unwelcome feeling. If anything, it's the opposite. You enjoy knowing he's watching you, that youâre having some kind of effect on him. You enjoy having him here, alone. It's a different sort of intimacy, a different kind of closeness. You wonder if it's a step in the right direction.
You're not sure what to expect from him, but whatever it is, you're ready for it.
âHow long until dinner is ready, doc? I'm starving over here." You don't have to turn to see him smile. You can hear it in his voice.
"Don't rush me," you scold, and he chuckles. "Dinner isn't ready until it's ready."
"I can't believe you're making me wait. It smells delicious."
"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself," you say, and you glance over your shoulder at him. "I was worried you wouldn't."
Kix raises his eyebrows. "Worried? About what?"
You turn away. "I don't know. I thought maybe you'd be disappointed."
"Why would I be disappointed?" he asks, sounding genuinely confused.
"I don't know." You shrug. "Maybe because we haven't really hung out before, and maybe you didn't want to, andââ
"No," he says, cutting you off. "I like spending time with you. I wanted to come."
You swallow, trying to keep your expression neutral despite the sudden tightness in your chest. "Oh."
"Besides, I've been meaning to ask for a while."
"Ask me what?" you ask, looking over at him.
He gives a half-shrug, the corner of his mouth twitching. "To have dinner with you."
Your face grows warm, and your stomach does a flip. You try to focus on the food, but it's difficult when all you can think about is the man behind you.
You hadn't realized just how much you wanted him to say that until he did.
"If it helps, I can promise that you won't regret it," you say, throwing a grin over your shoulder.
He leans his chin on his palm, grinning back. "I'm sure I won't."
You set a pot of water on the stove and turn on the burner.
"What're you doing?" he asks, sounding concerned.
"Boiling water."
"For what?"
"Kebroots."
He looks confused. "Aren't we having that stuff you're making now?"
"This is the sauce for the main dish," you say, gesturing with your spoon. It's easy to forget that he's never had a proper home-cooked meal in his life, and the thought of him getting to taste this one is more than a little thrilling. "The kebroots are going in the water."
"Why?"
"Because they need to boil."
He gives you a flat look, and you roll your eyes. "Do you want to know the answer to everything, or do you want to enjoy the surprise?"
"Fine," he says, sitting back. "But don't think you can keep me from learning your secrets."
You raise your eyebrows at him. "Is that so?"
He nods, grinning.
"Well, then," you say, smiling down at the pot. "I'll have to make sure you don't."
You're not usually one to play your cards so close to the vest. It's not like you to keep secrets, but there's something fun about the intrigue, something thrilling about keeping him in the dark.
"Can I at least have a hint?" he asks, resting his elbows on the counter.
You turn and prop yourself against the stove. "No. I already told you. It's a surprise."
"Come on, doc. You can't give me something?" he wheedles, his brown eyes sparkling with mirth. "Just a little something to tide me over."
"No."
"Please?"
"Nope."
"You're no fun."
"And yet, here you are,â you say with a teasing tilt of your head.
Kix grins, then sighs.
"Fine," he says and pushes back from the counter. "If that's the case, then I'm going to need more beer."
He disappears into the fridge. You don't turn, focusing instead on the task at hand. The sauce is nearly finished, but there are still a few steps left to complete.
You hear him move to your bookshelf, fingers lightly tapping along the spines of your books. You'd been surprised when he mentioned enjoying reading, since most clones you'd met didn't bother with it, preferring instead to watch holodramas or listen to the radio. But Kix liked books, which you were sure he kept to himself for fear of teasing from his brothers. You had a sneaking suspicion he was a romantic.
He stops to pull one out, running his fingers down the spine. "The Time Machine," he reads.
"It was one of my favorites as a kid," you explain. "I'm surprised it survived the trip here."
Kix puts it back in its place. "Have you ever read any of the Corellian Civil War holonovels?"
"No.â You shake your head. âI've never been a fan of war stories."
Kix snorts. "Me neither. There's only so many ways they can tell the same story."
"There's nothing like real-life experience," you say, and you immediately regret it.
"True," Kix agrees and doesn't press the matter. Youâre thankful, your heart in your throat, that you hadnât ruined the moment entirely, but you canât help but feel a little on edge.
The two had been working together for several months, and though it wasn't uncommon for clone troopers and nat-born people to befriend one another, there was still an underlying tension between you, one that neither of you had the guts to address.
He'd asked you for dinner because he liked you. You accepted because you liked him.
Neither was quite sure what to do next.
The tension between you had grown more pronounced, and though neither of you made any effort to stop it, the unresolved feelings were starting to affect your work. You were both professionals and did your best not to let it interfere, but it was still there, a constant reminder of what was unsaid, a potential opportunity squandered.
Still, if you were going to pursue a relationship with anyone, you were glad it was him.
You had a fondness for him, and it had grown into something deeper. It wasn't just his looks. Though he was definitely the most handsome trooper in the GAR, that was never a primary consideration for you. Youâve spent nearly every waking moment around men who looked almost exactly like him, after all. But it was the differences, the small nuances that made him stand out, that drew your eye.
With the water finally boiling, you turn back to chopping the kebroot. The vegetable is a bit tricky to handle, its tough outer skin resisting the knife's edge. You steady your hand, apply more pressure, and try again.
Youâre grateful Kix seems to be distracted by your books, allowing you to focus. If he saw you struggling, heâd probably try to offer help, and you want to do this on your own.
He was right earlier, when he said you didn't need to do all this for him.
You don't.
But you want to.
He's a good man, a hard worker, and you want to show him your appreciation. He deserves someone to take care of him for once.
When you think about it, the whole thing seems silly. You're grown adults, not hormonal teenagers. You can't believe you're making such a big deal out of something so simple.
But it is a big deal, and not just because he's the first man you've found attractive in a long time. It's the fact that you've been dancing around this for months, if not longer, and now you finally have an opportunity to explore the potential between you.
Youâve been trying your best not to picture him here, but with him in the apartment, it was difficult not to imagine. You worked together. You were friends. It was easy for you to forget that, and even easier to let your imagination run wild.
You can see him in the kitchen, helping you chop vegetables, or washing dishes at the sink. You can see him on the couch, his arm draped over the back, his legs spread wide, his head tilted back in a laugh. You can see him in bed, and that's where your mind wanders to the most.
You imagine how it might feel to kiss him, to touch him, to have him touch you. You wonder if he'll be gentle or if he'll be rough. You don't have a preference. You don't care as long as it's him. You want him to hold you. You want to feel him pressed against you, his chest against yours, his mouth against your neck, his hands running up your sides, slipping underneath your shirtâ
You hiss out a curse as the knife slips, nicking the fleshy part of your finger. Blood wells up, a stark contrast against the green of the ruica.
"You okay?" Kix asks.
"I'm fine," you answer quickly.
You reach blindly for the towel, wrapping the cloth around the cut, trying to apply pressure. The cut isnât deep, but it stings like hell.
"What happened?" he asks, appearing at your side.
"Nothing. I'm fine."
"Let me see," he says, and grabs the wrist of the hand holding the towel.
"It's not bad," you say and are about to pull away, but he doesnât let go. He guides you to the sink and holds your hand under the tepid water. His eyes flicker from the wound to your face and back again, brows furrowed in a way you know means heâs gone into medic mode.
âKix, Iâm fine,â you huff. You try to withdraw your wrist, but he holds fast.
"Stop moving. You're bleeding all over the counter."
âSorry,â you say. You can feel your cheeks burning. You should have been more careful.
His hands are warm. The pressure feels good. You can't remember the last time someone touched you like this. You want to pull away, to spare yourself the embarrassment of being this close to him, but he doesn't seem to mind. If anything, he seems determined.
âWhereâs your med kit?â he asks, eyes still fixed on your hand.
You tell him where to find it, and he firmly instructs you to keep your hand under the water before he breaks into a jog toward the bathroom.
âSit,â Kix commands when he returns, his tone no-nonsense.
You can't help but laugh.
He shoots you a glare as he opens the kit and begins removing the supplies. "I'm serious, doc. Sit."
He's so cute when he's bossy.
"Alright," you relent, pulling out a chair and sitting down. He grabs the chair across from you and drags it closer, positioning himself directly across from you.
"Gimme your hand," he orders, and you do as you're told, holding it out for him. He gently peels the towel back and sets it aside. You don't dare look. You're too embarrassed.
âSeriously, you donât have to,â you assure him, but he just shakes his head and dabs the blood away with a clean corner of the towel.
âShouldâve known youâd be a Code 5,â he says your code word for a difficult patient with a roll of his eyes. He's only half joking.
âItâs a cut, not a stab wound,â you reply indignantly.
Kix shakes his head and reaches for the alcohol wipe. He opens it with his teeth and begins cleaning the area around the wound.
"I know that," he says, his voice softer. âI just donât like seeing you hurt.â
He looks away to discard the wipe, and when he meets your gaze again, his eyes are filled with warmth and something else.
You donât know how to respond.
It's a look that speaks volumes.
His touch is gentle, his fingers brushing against your palm. It's not necessary, but he does it anyway.
âJust let me take care of you,â Kix says quietly, his gaze locked on yours. âPlease. For my sake.â
âAlright.â You nod, biting your lip once he turns away to grab a bandage. The intensity in his gaze surprises you. Itâs different than the look he wears when youâre in the midst of surgery, different from the easy smile he wears when youâre with the men. This is something new, something unexpected.
It feels personal.
He tears the backing off the bandage and presses it gently over the cut. You try to focus on his hands instead of his face. His fingers are rough and calloused, and you how they'd feel against your bare skin.
The thought makes your stomach flutter.
It's not a foreign feeling. You've thought about this before, more times than you care to admit, but this is the first time you've been so close. This is the first time you let him.
When he finishes, he presses a kiss to your bandaged finger. The action is quick, almost thoughtless, and it catches you off guard. Kix freezes. His lips linger for a moment too long, and his cheeks flush pink.
He pulls back. "Sorry," he mumbles, not meeting your eyes.
"It's okay," you say, smiling shyly.
You're touched by the gesture. It's sweet and considerate, and exactly the sort of thing he'd do. His cheeks are flushed. You can't tell if he's embarrassed or if it's the proximity.
Your hand folds back into your lap. You can still feel the warmth of his lips on your skin. You don't know why the kiss affects you so much. It's not the first time you've been kissed, and it certainly won't be the last, but something about his touch makes your pulse quicken.
"You're sweet," you say, trying to lighten the mood.
He grins, shaking his head. "Don't let that get around."
"My lips are sealed."
He glances down at your mouth, his grin fading. You feel a thrill rush through you, the hair on the back of your neck standing up. Your heart starts to beat faster.
"Good," he whispers, his voice low and husky.
You don't move.
You don't want to break the spell.
Kix's eyes search yours, looking for some sign of reciprocation. He's giving you a chance to tell him no, to push him away.
Instead, your hand comes up to cup his cheek. Your thumb brushes across his bottom lip. You feel the breath leave his lungs, feel him lean into your touch. His eyes are hooded, pupils blown wide.
"Kix?"
"Yeah?" he whispers.
"You should kiss me," you breathe.
Kix rises to his feet, leaning down so that his face is only inches from yours. You take in his features, his warm eyes, the way they're trained on your lips, the way he's watching your every move as if waiting for you to change your mind.
His thumb caresses your cheek, and he waits a breath more before leaning in to press his lips to yours.
You sigh into his touch, bringing your other hand up to grab the back of his head. The kiss is soft, unhurried, a slow slide of lips.
Your tongue slides across his bottom lip, and he groans, pulling you closer, deepening the kiss. His hands roam over your shoulders, down your back, over your hips, his fingertips brushing the exposed skin above your waistband.
You part, and you let your forehead rest against his, both of you catching your breath. Eventually, you pull back, swallowing nervously.
"I'm sorry," you say. "I don't know why I did that."
"I do," he replies.
You look up in surprise and find him watching you. His eyes are bright, and he's smiling, a real smile, not the forced one he sometimes uses around others.
"I've wanted to do that since the day we met," he admits, his cheeks reddening slightly. "And I'm not sorry it happened."
"Really?" you ask, trying not to sound too eager.
He nods, the hand on your cheek moving to play with the ends of your hair. "You're beautiful. And smart. And you take no shit, especially from me. Whatâs not to like?"
You laugh and lean in to kiss him again. He returns the kiss eagerly, his hand resting on your lower back to pull you closer.
"I wasn't going to say anything," he continues between kisses. "I didn't think you would want this."
"Well, I do." You grin. "Very much."
He groans and leans in to capture your lips again, but you stop him with a finger to his lips. He raises an eyebrow, waiting for you to continue.
"The food's burning."
Kix's eyes go wide, and he rounds the counter in a flash, quickly grabbing the pot off the burner and setting it aside.
"Shit," he curses, and you can't help but laugh at the panicked expression on his face.
"Relax. I'm kidding," you say, and you follow him to wrap your arms around waist. He relaxes into your touch, his hands coming up to rest on your hips.
âCan it be reheated?â he asks, his expression hopeful.
You quirk an eyebrow. âYeah.â
âGood.â
His hands slide up to cup either side of your face and pull you into another kiss, one you can feel all the way down to your toes. He presses you up against the counter, his body flush against yours.
You whine into his mouth at the feeling of his tongue against yours, your fingers gripping his hair to ground yourself. He tastes like beer and something else, something dark and earthy.
It's delicious, and you can't get enough.
His lips leave yours to trail across your cheek to your neck, peppering kisses along your jaw, his teeth scraping along your pulse.
"We should probably wait until after dinner to do this," you breathe, tilting your head to give him better access.
"I can't," he replies, his voice rough, his hands roaming across your body.
"Me either," you agree, and let him lift you onto the counter. Your legs wrap around his hips instinctively, your hands cupping his face as you bring him in for another kiss.
His hands are everywhere, his touch electric, and you want him to touch you everywhere, his hands and his lips, his mouth and his tongue.
Your hands slide underneath his shirt, pushing the material up until he has to withdraw to pull it off over his head. You take in the expanse of his bare torso, the way the muscles ripple under your touch, and your heart feels like it's about to beat out of your chest.
"You're gorgeous," you say, your hands coming to rest on his chest. You could feel the steady beat of his heart beneath your palm, his chest rising and falling with each breath.
"You are," he says. "And I've wanted this for so long."
He reaches behind you to remove your shirt, leaving you in your bra and pants. You feel exposed, vulnerable, and you want him to touch you, to make you feel good, to ease the ache that's been building inside you since the first time he smiled at you.
He dips his head to kiss you again, his hands sliding up to tangle in your hair. Your mouth opens to his, and he takes advantage, deepening the kiss and pushing his tongue against yours. He nips at your bottom lip, sucking it between his teeth, and you moan, pulling him closer.
His lips travel across your jaw, down your neck, along your collarbone. His hands find the clasp of your bra and make quick work of the latch, leaving you bare. You shiver, the cool air hitting your skin, goosebumps breaking out over your skin.
"Fuck, you're beautiful," he whispers, and he leans down to take one nipple into his mouth.
"Oh," you gasp, arching your back into him.
He sucks the sensitive bud between his lips, swirling his tongue around the peak, teasing you. He takes the other nipple between his thumb and forefinger, tugging and twisting, sending sparks of pleasure through you.
Your head falls back, and you moan his name, your fingers holding tight to his neck, your thighs squeezing his hips.
You can feel the heat of him against you, the hard ridge of his cock pressing against your center, and you grind down against him, desperate for friction.
His mouth leaves your breast, and he kisses you, his tongue tangling with yours, his hand coming up to cup your cheek. You drag him closer, your hands running over his back, exploring every inch of his warm, firm skin.
His lips trail across your cheek, and you gasp as he presses open-mouthed kisses down your neck. He pauses to suck a bruise into the sensitive skin where your neck meets your shoulder, his hands massaging your waist.
"What do you want, meshâla?" he murmurs, his mouth trailing along your collarbone.
"You," you reply, your voice breaking into a moan when he bites down gently on your shoulder, and you can't help but buck your hips.
You can feel him grin against your skin. "You have me."
"Bed," you manage, your hands gripping at his shoulders. "Now."
Kix chuckles, his hands sliding down to cup your ass. He pulls you flush against him, your arms wrapping around his neck as he lifts you off the counter. Your legs tighten around his waist and you bury your face in his neck to muffle your gasp as he walks you down the short hallway toward your bedroom.
Kix kisses you deeply as he lays you on the bed, hovering above you for a moment before he ducks down to press a kiss to your stomach.
His lips trail lower, dipping just above the waistband of your pants. Your breath hitches at the feeling of his mouth on you, the scratch of his stubble against the sensitive skin there. The idea of what heâll feel like between your thighs has you nodding before heâs even asked the question, his hands hovering on your waist.
Kixâs fingers hook into the waistband, slowly sliding your pants and underwear down your legs. You help him, lifting your hips so he can pull them off. Your panties stick to the slick dampening your center, and Kix lets out a barely concealed moan at the darkened patch there before tearing them away.Â
You expect him to discard them over your shoulder with your pants, but he shocks you by giving you a bashful smile and tucking them into his back pocket.
"Really?" you ask, trying to stifle your amusement.
"What?" He gives you a look that's almost innocent, if not for the fact that he's hovering above you, half-naked and fully aroused.
âNothing. I just didn't expect you to want to keep them."
"Do you mind?" he asks, his expression turning serious.
"Not at all," you say, and watch with rapt attention as his expression turns devious.
"Good. I plan to treasure these," he teases, and he presses a kiss to your bare knee. You shudder at the touch, at the implication behind his words.
"Now where were we?" he murmurs, his voice husky, his eyes dark as he lowers himself to his knees on the floor in front of you.
He grabs the back of your ankles and tugs, and you let out a squeak as you're pulled until your ass is nearly hanging off the edge. Itâs a precarious position thatâs immediately rectified by Kix arranging your legs so theyâre thrown over each of his shoulders, his face level with your exposed center.
The feeling of his breath against your cunt is almost too much to bear, your legs wanting to close instinctually, but he quickly stops you with a firm hand on either thigh.
âHold still, beautiful,â he commands softly, his eyes fixed on your wet, swollen folds.
âKixââ
Whatever you meant to say evaporates as soon he darts forward, tongue flattening to lick a stripe from your entrance to your clit. You nearly forget your own name when he parts your lips with one hand to give him better access, zeroing in on your clit without any direction from you.Â
His licks start out soft, then steadily increase in pressure until you're nearly grinding on his tongue. The scratch of his stubble against you feels as good as you imagined. He eats you out like heâs starving, with a passion you knew he possessed but never dared to dream heâd apply to you in this way.
He withdraws for a moment to take a deep breath, his eyes flicking up to yours, pupils blown wide. âMore?â
You nod frantically, though you arenât sure what you're agreeing to. Anything to keep his hands and mouth on you. âPlease.â
Kix dives back in, lapping up the juices leaking from you before returning back to your clit. Zaps of pleasure jolt up your spine and turn into a burning heat when you feel something nudge your entrance. His finger slips inside with ease, stroking your walls and the fire building inside of you, your eyelids fluttering shut.Â
He finds the spongey part deep inside you within seconds, hooking his finger upward to press firmly and drawing a gasp from you. With his target found, he adds another finger and begins to slowly curl them, pushing his hand in and out in a rhythm that has you seeing stars.
His lips close around your clit, suddenly sucking hard, and you gasp.
Your hips jolt off the bed, thighs closing involuntarily around his head, and he groans loudly. Your eyes open abruptly, worrying you've hurt him somehow.Â
Instead, you find his eyes closed, brow furrowed in pleasure, and the hand heâd been using to hold you open has retreated. From your vantage point, you can only see his arm moving, and you realize with a moan that heâs languidly palming his cock in time with the thrusting of his fingers.
As if he can sense you watching, Kix opens his eyes. Though his mouth doesnât let up in its assault on your clit, you can see the smile in his eyes as he stares back. His fingers speed up as he pulls back to speak, punching the air from your lungs and sending you falling back against the bed.
âCan you take three?â
âYe-es.â You hiccup at the feeling of a third thick finger slowly breaching you, stuffing you fuller than you've ever been able to manage on your own. The coil in your stomach tightens with each push and pull into your wet heat. Every thrust of his fingers sends you higher and higher, your entire body writhing with the force of it.
âLook at you," he groans. "So tight and wet. Taking my fingers so well, like you were made for me."
Your hands come up to fist the sheets at your sides, the coil in your belly winding tighter and tighter with each word, the way he moans between your legs, the way his eyes flutter closed in bliss as he fucks you with his hand. You can feel yourself approaching your peak, your walls clenching and fluttering around his fingers.
"Are you gonna come for me?"
"Yes." You gasp, your thighs starting to shake with the strain.
"Come on," he encourages, taking your clit between his lips and sucking, his tongue flicking rapidly against you. "Let go, beautiful."
Your eyes slam shut, and your orgasm slams into you with a force unlike anything you've felt before. It rips through your body, the heat coiled inside your exploding, your walls clamping down on his fingers as you writhe. You feel yourself nearly come out of your body, tingling pleasure coursing through you in waves.Â
Just as you're beginning to wonder if itâll ever stop, it begins to fade, leaving you panting and sweating as your body collapses against the bed.
âHoly shit,â you say breathlessly. Kix chuckles from the floor, and you push yourself up on your elbows to look at him after you regain control of your limbs. Heâs staring back at you, a dreamy smile on his face, the entire lower half dampened with your arousal.
âHow was that?â he asks.
âI think you know,â you laugh, breathless. âI thought I was about to suffocate you there for a second.â
âWorth it, trust me.â He sighs wistfully, his eyes a little unfocused. âI don't think I've ever seen anything so hot in my life."
"You're such a charmer," you tease, reaching down to run your fingers through his hair.
"Just telling the truth," he smiles, and presses a kiss to your inner thigh.
Kix helps you lower your trembling legs from his shoulders before glancing down at the hand that was just inside you. He lifts it up to his mouth, sucking his fingers and tasting your release with a thoughtful hum before he moves to stand.
âJust as I thought.â
âWhat?â
âI knew youâd taste incredible.â
He kisses you, tongue pushing its way inside your mouth to tangle with your own. You moan when you taste yourself on his tongue, chasing after him when he pulls away to push his pants off completely.Â
You want to keep kissing him, keep feeling his mouth against yours, but you're distracted by the sight of his cock springing free from his small black briefs as he slides them down his strong thighs.
Your mouth drops open in disbelief.
âYouâre kidding.â
Kixâs fingers, slick with his spit and the remnants of your release, circle the head of his cock. Itâs half-hard from his concentrated efforts on your cunt, but it quickly springs to life under his attention. Even not fully erect, itâs by far the most impressive cock you've ever seen. Thick, a sizable length, and now curving up toward his stomach, you canât look away.
Saliva begins to pool on your tongue at the thought of having him in your mouth, but before you can lean forward to act on your desires, heâs pushing you back on the bed.
âIf I knew all you clones were packing ââ
He cuts you off with a bruising kiss.
âCareful, meshâla.â The Mandoâa comes out in a growl as he crowds you against the bed, slotting himself between your legs. His hand slides up your thigh to your breast, pinching a nipple. âIâm not big on sharing.â
You let out a breathless giggle as his mouth descends to follow the path his hand has taken, sucking your other nipple into his mouth. The feeling of his mouth and teeth on your chest makes you moan, your hips bucking against his.
"Kix, please."
He kisses back up your chest and throat to press his forehead against yours. You can feel the way his fingers tremble against you as he reaches down to line himself up with your entrance, and your hand comes up to cup his cheek.
"Are you nervous?"
"Yes," he admits, eyes closing as he takes a deep breath.
"We don't have to do this," you assure him.
His eyes shoot open. "I want this more than anything."
"Okay," you smile.
He lets out a sigh, his body relaxing above you. "Sorry, it's just... I've wanted this for a long time, and I just don't want to mess it up."
"You won't." Your arms come around to wrap around his neck. "But I'll tell you if I'm not liking something."
He nods, ducking down to kiss you deeply. Your legs come up to wrap around his waist, and he groans into your mouth as the head of his cock rubs against your clit.
"Please," you whine as he begins to rock his hips. His cock glides easily through your slick folds, and his lips drop back to your neck. "Inside me, Kix."
"Maker, you're wet." His cock slips back down to your entrance, and you bite your lip as the head begins to breach you.
"That's what happens when you make a girl cum," you quips, moaning as he slowly inches inside of you. You feel every inch of him, the stretch more than you're used to but still deliciously perfect. "Oh, fuck!"
He stops, pulling back to look at you with concern. "Are you okay? Am I hurting you?"
"No! No, it's just... " you laugh breathlessly, your hand coming up to caress his cheek. "You're huge. Fuck, Kix."
He smirks, leaning down to kiss you as he continues to push inside of you. The stretch is unlike anything you've ever felt, and it's making your head spin. He feels amazing, thick and hot and throbbing inside of you.
"Fuck, you feel good," he grunts. "I wish you could see how good you look taking my cock."
Your cunt clenches around him at his words, and he groans. He buries his face in your neck, pressing kisses along your jaw, his breath coming out in hot puffs against your skin.
When he bottoms out, you both let out a shaky breath.
"Stars," you gasp, your fingers digging into his shoulders. "Kix, you feel amazing."
"So do you," he grits out. "You take my cock so well, mesh'la. Like you were made for me."
You moan at his words, his hips pulling back to thrust shallowly into you. You can't help the whine that escapes you, your legs tightening around his waist to pull him closer. The slow drag of his cock against your walls is almost too much, pleasure bordering on the line between pain.
"Faster," you pants, your nails scratching down his back. "Harder, Kix. I need it."
"Anything you want," he replies, his hips picking up speed.
He kisses you, tongue plunging into your mouth as he begins to snap his hips against yours. Your eyes roll back at the feeling of him filling you, the slick sounds of your cunt and his thrusts echoing throughout the room.
Kix fucks you like it's his last chance, hard and fast and rough, like he's afraid youâll disappear at any moment, and you can barely do anything but hold on.
He changes the angle of his hips slightly, and your mouth drops open as a strangled cry is torn from your lips. His cock rubs against your sweet spot with each stroke, and his head drops to your chest as his hips slam against yours.
"Stars, meshâla, you feel incredible," he grunts, pressing his face into your neck. His teeth sink into the juncture where your neck meets your shoulder, and you let out a strangled gasp.
"Oh, fuck. Don't stop, Kix," you pants, your voice breaking into a sob, your hand tangling in his hair to tug on it. His hips stutter for a moment before he picks up the pace, your entire body jolting with the force of each thrust. He's fucking you so hard, his cock driving into you with enough force that your entire body rocks with the force of it. "Kix, oh kriff."
He withdraws from your neck, his mouth returning to yours. He swallows your moans, hips pumping into your faster as you squeeze around him. The feeling of him stretching you is intoxicating, and you never want it to end. You wonder if it would be too much to ask him to stay inside your forever, his thick cock plugging you up so nothing could slip out. You feel him everywhere, all around you and inside you. It's overwhelming in the best possible way.
"Kix," you whimper, breaking the kiss to bury your face in his neck. Your teeth scrape along his skin, and you revel in the groan that escapes him. His hands tighten on your hips, thumbs pressing against the bones there.
"Meshâla," he gasps. "Kriff, I'm getting close."
"Me, too."
You can feel the fire burning low in your stomach, your walls fluttering around him. You dig your heels into his ass, encouraging him to go even deeper, and you see stars when he hits the spot inside you that makes your toes curl.
"Right there, Kix!"
He changes angles so he's hitting your g-spot on every thrust, his mouth dropping back to your neck. You can feel the sweat beading on his skin, the way his muscles flex under your hands with every movement. You scratch down his back, hips jerking to meet his, and you know he must be close. His thrusts are becoming more erratic, his breathing heavier.
"Kix, I'm gonna--" you gasp, your hand cupping the back of his neck.
He buries his face in your neck, placing open-mouthed kisses on every inch of skin in his reach. The hand on your hip slides between you, and you nearly scream when he begins to circle your clit with his thumb.
"Cum for me, beautiful," he mutters, biting your earlobe.
Your orgasm comes out of nowhere, your body seizing up as you cums. White-hot pleasure courses through you, your thighs shaking around him. You can vaguely hear him whispering praise in your ear, but you can't focus on anything except the feeling of his cock still pounding into your as you ride out your high.
"So good, mesh'la. I love the way your pussy squeezes my cock. You look so pretty when you cum, you know that?â he babbles with a low groan, hips beginning to stutter. âFuck, I'm not gonna last."
You manage to regain your bearings after a moment, your body feeling like jelly. Your limbs feel like they weigh a ton, but you're determined. You need to see him lose control, need to see him fall apart because of you. You know he's close, can feel his thrusts becoming more and more uneven.
"Cum for me, Kix," you order. You can't help the smug smirk that overtakes your features as he groans loudly. "I want to see you."
"Mesh'la," he chokes out, hips losing their rhythm as he fucks you.
"Let go, baby." You lean up to nip his jaw, the hand on the back of his neck tangling in his hair. He looks so beautiful above you, eyes screwed shut, a flush coloring his cheeks. His skin is shining with sweat, muscles flexing as he pushes himself further.
"Look at me."
His eyes flutter open, and you nearly cum again. The sight of him, eyes half-lidded and mouth hanging open, is almost enough to tip you over the edge.
"Fuck," he gasps, hips pistoning into your erratically.
"Cum for me," you repeat.
The grip on your hips is almost bruising as he buries himself inside you. His hips jerk once, twice, and then he's gone, moaning loudly as he cums. You can feel the pulsing of his cock inside you, the warm wetness flooding your cunt, and you can't help the whine that escapes you.
"Kriff," he grunts, head dropping down to rest against yours. You stay like that for a moment, both panting, the only sounds in the room the faint hum of the rain outside and your heavy breathing.
You feel boneless, completely and utterly spent. If you were to die right now, you'd die happy. Kix props himself up on his forearms, brushing your sweaty hair from your face with a grin. He presses a soft kiss to your lips, and you smile tiredly.
"Hey," you whisper.
"Hey," he replies. He ducks down to kiss you again, his smile widening. Has he always had dimples? How did you not notice those before? "How are you feeling?"
"Messy,â you laugh. You glance down at the place where your bodies are joined, feeling him twitch inside you.
"Let me take care of that," he says, gently sliding out of you. The sound he makes when he leaves your body is positively sinful, and your thighs clench at the feeling of his cum leaking out of you.
Kix brushes another kiss against your temple before standing from the bed. You watch with half-lidded eyes as he disappears into the refresher, returning a moment later with a damp washcloth. He cleans you up gently, tossing the cloth in the direction of the refresher once he's finished.
"Come here," you murmur, reaching out for him.
He climbs into bed beside you, and you roll onto your side to press yourself against his chest, throwing your leg over his. His arms come around you immediately, holding you close as he peppers kisses on your hair. You snuggle closer, sighing happily as the warmth radiating from him cocoons around you. His hands run over every inch of available skin as if he's committing it to memory.
"I can't believe we waited so long to do that," you mumbled against his chest.
Kix laughs, the vibrations running through his chest and into yours. You're suddenly aware of how bare you both are, how you're pressed together from shoulder to toe. It should be unnerving, but it isn't. You feel safe.
"Me either. We should've been doing that this whole time."
You giggle, your hand running across his side to rest on his ribs. You can feel the steady thump of his heartbeat beneath your palm. "Maybe next time you can fuck me on a med table."
He groans, the hand on your waist moving down to squeeze your ass. "That violates about ten different health codes."
"Fine. The supply closet, then."
"Meshâla â" The words are a choked moan, and you canât help but laugh.
"You're cute when you're flustered."
"You're a menace."
You lean up to press a kiss to his jaw, smirking. "But you like it.â
"You're right," he chuckles, leaning down to capture your lips in a gentle kiss. "I do."
You hum happily, your eyes fluttering closed as his lips move slowly against yours before a rumbling sensation under your hand makes them shoot open.
"Was that your stomach?"
Kix blushes and looks away. "Maybe."
You roll your eyes fondly, pushing away from his chest. He whines, trying to pull your back against him.
âYouâre hungry,â you laugh.
"I am not," he protests weakly.
You stand from the bed, grinning when his eyes immediately drop to your body. His gaze is so heated that you can't help but flush, and it only burns brighter when you bend over to pick up your pants, and he lets out a low groan.
"Mesh'la, if you keep doing that, I'll never let you leave this bed," he growls.
You bite your lip, your eyes flickering down to the sheet barely covering his growing erection. The sight is mouthwatering, and your mind fills with a thousand different ideas about what you'd like to do with him. But your stomach growls again, and you sigh, walking toward the refresher.
"Where are you going?" he pouts, propping himself up on his elbows.
"You're not the only one who's hungry." You stop at the door, giving him a mischievous smile. "And if you're a good boy, I'll make it worth the wait."
Kix is quiet for a moment before he speaks. "I can wait."
"Good boy."
His responding groan has you grinning from ear to ear as you disappear behind the door, your laughter echoing off the walls.

One of my favorite moments between Echo and Omega that always hits me right in the feels occurs in "The Return" :
Echo: "See? They always work it out. And I don't even see any blood this time. That's progress."
Omega: "Do you think the intel we recovered will help you and Rex?"
Echo: "We still don't know the coordinates of Tantiss, but between the datapad and all you and Crosshair have told me, we're closer to finding and freeing those clones."
Omega: "I wish I could have done more to help them."
Echo: "You did all you could, kid. And you did exactly what you're supposed to do: you got out of there."
All the ways Echo flawlessly mediates between Hunter and Crosshair when needed deserves a post of its own; and I love that it culminates here in Echo addressing Omega's concern over her brothers with practicality and good humor.
Then, Omega brings up her other main concern: helping the other prisoners
Echo doesn't just give a flippant conciliatory answer, though, instead treating Omega as he always has by giving her the full truth while also reassuring her: he acknowledges that there is still work to be done, but also encourages her by telling her the intel she provided is helpful. And when Omega expresses regret over not being able to help the other clones, Echo reassures her that she did the right thing by saving herself.
And I just think that is so important, so crucial for someone like Omega, who is so compassionate and altruistic, to hear: she proves time and again that she will put others above herself, and Echo implicitly reminds her that her own welfare is important, ensuring her own safety was the right call, and she did the best she could - and that's enough.
(Also, given Omega's downcast expression after her talk with Echo clearly showing us that she still feels remorse and concern even with Echo's assurances, I just love that Echo doesn't hesitate in the finale to let Omega join him in carrying out a mission that has become so important to her: saving the other clones.)

Hunter x Jedi!reader
Spoilers for the bad batch season 3 :)
Summary: After a long time, you're finally reunited with your family and your lover.
Warning: Canon violence, Mention of mental and physical torture, slight depressing state, hurt/comfort. Fluff!
A/N: Let me know if anyone would like part two. I was planning on making it spicy ;}
Word count: 2.4k
Part two
It's been months since you got a distress signal from one of your fellow surviving Jedi. Months since you managed to rescue your Jedi friend but sacrifice your own freedom. Months since you've seen your family and your lover.
The last thing you remember from when you were still with the batch was when you were all on Pabu, helping the people restore the beautiful ocean city while you were waiting to get any word from Echo as he helped Rex.
When the only thing missing was Crosshair.
You got the distress signal the same day Echo said he would visit. You knew you couldn't wait for your friend to visit, so with a tight hug, a long and loving kiss and a promise to return safely and quickly, you set the course for your Jedi friend.
Unfortunately, your plan wasn't Vader proof and you ended up captured, switching your place with your friend who managed to escape. You waited for your end, silently apologizing to Hunter and your family, but it never came. Instead, Darth Vader decided you would make a great addition to the imperial inquisitors, so they tried to break you, in every possible way.
For months, they tortured you mentally and physically, leaving you crying and barely alive at the end of every day. But you never broke, no matter what they did to you, you didn't break. There were times when it came close, but thinking of your batch and Hunter gave you strength to fight on.
So when the first opportunity to escape came, you took it. Doing everything in you capacity, even if it meant you'd have to tap into the dark side of the force. Your body had been weakened in the past months, your skin now covered in scars but that didn't stop you and you managed to escape, hijacking an imperial ship and running.
It seemed that even the force was on your side once you coincidentally run into Echo, Rex and the newly forming Clone resistance. But all your happiness disappeared once Echo informed you of the loss they suffered almost immediately you were gone. All those months, just the idea of coming back to your family and how everything would be perfect once again. Everything fell apart and you felt like you were once again in that cold prison cell, waiting for the inquisitors to torture you again. You were falling into the dark abyss, ashamed to even show yourself to Hunter and Wrecker.
It wasn't until Echo came looking for you, four days later. His body radiating happy energy as he practically jumped on you, hugging you and telling you that both Omega and Crosshair managed to escape and were now safely with Hunter and Wrecker on Pabu.
That made you hyperactive, filling you with energy and will to live and both you and Echo were in the ship only few hours later, crossing the galaxy to get back to your family once again.
Three days later you finally made it to Pabu, docking the ship at the top of the city. But while waiting for the ship to touch the ground in a matter of those seconds, your mind betrayed you. Suddenly all you wanted to do was to hide in the corner and dissappear, all those happy thoughts dissappeard, instead being replaced with dark and hateful thoughts. You imagined how Hunter must hate you now that you only returned once everything was alright again. How you dissappeard when they needed you the most. Maybe he's even blaming you for everything bad that happened to his family. Or maybe Omega's the one who hates you now, maybe she thinks that you betrayed them, leaving your family to help someone else.
Your whole body was shaking and you felt like you would faint and when the ramp finally began to descend and the sun shined on your face, Echo had to gently grab you because you swayed like a fragile flower in the wind.
Both you and Echo managed to take a few steps down the ramp before you heard a loud yell. Omega screamed yours and Echo's name, sprinting full speed at you, making you react the same. You yelled her name and she jumped in your arms as you quickly prepared to catch her, hugging her close to you as you began crying, peppering her face with kisses and petting her hair. You managed to crouch with Omega in front of you as you grabbed her cheeks and looked at her more closely, checking for any injuries as she cried telling you how much she missed you.
But as soon as Omegas eyes fell on your face her expression fell as well.
"What happened to your face!" Big tears began rolling down her cheeks as she looked at you. Similar to your body, your face was now littered with both small and big scars, some more visible than the others.
It's been months since you've seen Omega, the young female clone that had unexpectedly entered your life and become like a daughter to you. And after so long, you didn't want your scars to be the first thing you talk about, it was too dark subject to address in the first moments of reunion. So you moved your hands up to her hair, trying to change the subject to something happier.
"Look at your hair! It's grown so much!" You laughed through your tears as you played with the little girl's hair.
"I know, now you can finally braid my hair!" The young girl knew what your were trying to do and played along giggling as she mirrored your hands movements and played with your hair.
You were just about to respond when you both got interrupted by someone whispering your name. Your head snapped behind Omega, falling on a frozen figure, Hunter.
Your body went rigid, completely frozen in time when your eyes meet with his golden ones. Omegas eyes followed yours and once she saw Hunter standing there silently watching, she hugged you one last time before slowly removing herself from you and running towards waiting Echo.
Now that Omega was no longer in front of you, you stood up slowly, your eyes never leaving his as he watched your every move like he couldn't believe you were really there.
Your hands began shaking again and you grabbed your sleeves to try and stop them but to no avail.
"Hunter?"
You whispered back to him, taking a small step towards him. He said nothing, but his body moved and he was by you in the next second, his hands enveloping your body as his own crashed against yours. He squeezed you almost as hard as he could, fearing that if he wouldn't, you would've disappeared again. Hunter buried his face in your neck, inhaling your scent as your hands slowly stopped shaking and you moved them up into his hair. Your forehead fell on his shoulder as you finally closed your eyes, taking in his warm presence. You both stood there for a long minute, not moving as you both tried to soak in each other's warmth.
You felt Hunter deeply inhale once again, his breath tickling your neck, before his lips pressed against the same spot and he kissed you. Repeating the movement kissing up your neck, slowly coming to your face as his hands moved up to your neck, and his thumbs landed on your cheeks as his eyes found yours again. Hunter breathed out your name again, his face so close to yours.
"I thought I lost you..." His normally smoky voice sounded broken, quiet, like he was worried he would scare you away if he'd talk any louder. His own hands began to shake slightly as he gently turned your face around, his eyes jumping from scar to scar.
"Hunter, I'm so sorry. I tried to get back to you, I really did but they-" You tried explaining yourself as his eyes found yours again.
"When your ship returned I thought to myself at least I got one of my girls back...but then only General Prima came out and she could barely look me in the eyes to tell me what happened..." Hunter let out a sigh as his thumb traced the scar across your lips.
"...I thought I lost you and I couldn't bare to even think of what they're doing to you...I tried get you back every day, you and Omega..." He went on slowly and quietly, his other thumb tracing the scar across your eye.
"I'm so sorry Hunter-" You tried to apologise again but he interrupted you again with his thumb on your lips.
"Just...just promise me to never leave me again...I...I can't live without you." Hunter whispered as one tear left his eye and you moved your hand to his cheek, brushing it away as he leaned into your touch.
"I promise Hunter, never again." You nodded your head as you promised him, your own tears escaping you again and you moved your head, leaning your forehead against his.
Hunter let out a gentle puff of air, making your lips tingle as the air hit them. His own lips ghosting over yours as he whispered. "Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum ner ka'ra."
A small smile appeared on your lips and you gently nodded. "Ni kar'tayli gar darasuum ner ashi dul."
You responded and finally moved, pressing your lips against his into a long and loving kiss.
Hunter's hands moved back down to your waist and he pulled you closer again as his kiss turned more desperate.
Your own hands moved around his neck as you pulled yourself impossibly closer, a small sound escaping you as Hunters hand squeezed your hip and he took the chance to deepen the kiss. His tongue prodded against your lips as he entered your mouth in almost like urgent matter.
You let him take the reins and followed his tempo, enjoying the feeling of his arms around you again.
"Okay, you can continue doing that later! Now it's my turn!" You heard Wrecker before another set of arms snaked around you and Hunter, squeezing you even further and lifting you in the air. Both you and Hunter gasped, breaking the kiss to look at the gentle giant as he hugged you, leaning his head on your shoulders. You chuckled, grinning and squeezing one arm out and moving it to gently pat Wreckers head. "I missed you too Wrecker." Even Hunter managed a chuckle as he heard his brother sniffle quietly.
"We're never splitting ever again." Wrecker decided as he slowly put them down and brushed the tears from his eyes away. "Agreed." You nod, grabbing the giant clone's hand and squeezing it.
"What, no hug for me?" Crosshair's sly snake like voice asked as he came closer and crossed his arms in front of his chest an amused frown on his face. Your head turned in his direction and a wide smile grew on your lips and you gently let go of Wrecker and moved around Hunter, letting your hands to drag across his chest as you stepped closer to his youngest brother. "Crosshair!" You grinned and quickly moved closer to him, enveloping him into a big hug. Your movement surprised him greatly as he was expecting a glare and a witty remark instead you hugged him.
His arms were awkwardly waiting at his sides, debating if he should hug you back or push you away. Alas, you were the only one that hugged him so far and he'd be lying to himself if he'd say he didn't need a hug. So he let his arms slowly sneak around your body and he hugged you back, silently laying his head on top of yours.
"I'm glad you're back with us again." You whispered just loud enough for him to hear and you felt his breath hitch.
He slowly let go of you and stepped back a little, watching the scars across your face.
"Come on, you have to meet Batcher!" Omega gasped, grabbing your hand out of nowhere and pulling you towards what looked to be a excited Lurca hound, running around and chasing Moon-yos. You chuckled at the enthusiasm of the little girl and looked back behind you to your lover and the rest of your family, only to see Hunter slightly glaring at Crosshair and Echo rolling his eyes and pushing the former Sergeant, encouraging him to move, while Wrecker only laughed and followed closely.
Omega managed to introduce you to the lively hound, telling you how she helped her and how they bonded over the time as they managed to survive the empire. Batcher seemed to be the perfect energetic pet for Omega as they began playing together, almost forgetting everyone else that was watching them.
You felt a warm hand on the small of your back and a moment later a warm body pressed against your side as Hunter lowered his head to whisper in your ear. "Come on, you must be starving." He pressed a delicate kiss to your forehead as you turned your head to look at him. "A little, yeah." You confirmed and Hunter motioned with his head to his brothers, before gently pushing you towards the house reserved for the batch.
Hunter whistled, making Omegas and Batchers heads turn, motioning them to follow too.
The shining sun had slowly began to descend as they sat down around the table after they put on some food. They snacked on the delicious fruits, talking about everything, just like they did in the old days, while they watched Omega and Batcher play.
The moment felt perfect, besides the one empty chair, remaining everyone that they will never be complete again. Everything else felt normal, Crosshair's witty remarks, Wrecker's compliments to the food, Echo trying to talk about another one of his missions and Hunter silently trying to listen to everyone as his hand slowly fell on your thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze to reassure you and himself that this moment is in fact real.

The clones with drugs and alcohol - HCs
In no particular order. Obviously TW for mature themes.
REX:
Thinks of himself as a very responsible drinker, only occasionally indulges and usually when talked into it by his brothers.
Won't touch spice or any other drugs.
Able to be coaxed into shenanigans SO easily when drunk
Therefore his brothers have IMMENSE motivation to get him drunk when they want to pull Nonsense
Can also be a very sad drunk, I think. Please give him hugs.
Can hold his liquor... fine. His tolerance isn't great because he doesn't drink often but he's got engineered supersoldier metabolism so he holds up alright, to his relief.
CODY:
Who do you think Rex got his responsible drinking and drug habits from?
Except Cody is the kind of mf who learned through EXPERIENCE.
His batchmates have stories about teenage drunk Cody that they are sworn to secrecy about on pain of death.
Drunk Cody is TWICE as ready to throw down and is five times LESS inhibited about bodily tackling someone with no regard for his own safety.
Cody can probably hold his liquor but wouldn't it be so funny if he couldn't. Marshall Commander two-sheets-to-the-wind-from-four-glasses-of-wine.
WOLFFE:
He's the guy who will make direct, unwavering eye contact (ha. just the one.) with you across the table as you're both taking a sip from your drinks and suddenly you're in a competition for who can keep chugging their drink until the whole thing is empty and he's so scary how is he DOING that-
Wolffe has a naturally competitive and snippy personality but I do actually think he softens more around the edges with a few drinks in his system.
Not in a sloppy way just smiling a little more and being more affectionate.
Doesn't like or trust any substances that aren't well known to him, won't touch anything other than alcohol.
FIVES:
Sloppy, loud, kind of peevish drunk. All the shit that's always simmering under his skin has an excuse to come out.
âListen, man. We need to start a revolution. Why hasn't someone bombed the Senat- oh, they have? Shit, can I be in on that?â
Will drop space acid or smoke space weed but only if Echo does. And Echo is smart enough to know that the paranoia Fives gets when he smokes weed is not worth it.
Type of guy to run across some random person in the desert and take psychedelics with them and go on an intense spiritual journey where he communes with dead gods. And then he shows back up at camp a couple hours later having achieved six new levels of enlightenment looking none the worse for wear. Only ever tells three people about this.
ECHO:
Echo is the kind of guy to have an Excel spreadsheet of dosages so he can bake the world's most precisely engineered edibles.
It doesn't work anyway because Fives keeps sticking his fingers in the batter and now the damn ratio is slightly off, why would you do that-
Also cannot keep a secret for the absolute life of him so he cannot pretend to be sober and he must be kept contained while drinking/stoned illicitly.
Maybe a very loving drunk. Or very sad. I'm not sure.
HARDCASE:
You already know he's in the club taking shots dancing on tabletops with his shirt off.
Life of the party, BUT he also doesn't mind being the designated driver. Flyer? Designated sober friend.
Type of guy to cheerily carry his drunk, passed out besties home and dump them into bed.
He's actually an explosives expert not just an enthusiast and heâs kind of a genius and everyone forgets that until he gets drunk and starts writing the equations to create insane explosive devices on his napkin while enthusiastically explaining it to his friends.
Very high alcohol tolerance.
GREGOR:
This man dresses like he's from Bangor Maine. I just know he was on that void planet smoking wild amounts of weed, and wearing Birkenstocks and a Patagonia puffer vest over a flannel shirt while doing it.
Thinks alcohol is a crutch.
FOX:
World's most miserable drunk.
But also can act really embarrassingly flamboyant so he stays away from alcohol at all costs.
Heh... I should kill my boss heh... wouldn't it be fucking hilarious if ... haha if I just walked into his office with a grenade right now and pulled the pin... fine, fiiine, yes, stop yelling at me. I would neeever leave Thorn with that much paperwork.
Zero tolerance, complete lightweight, doesn't matter how often he drinks. Can't hold his liquor for shit.
DOOM:
He either does mind-boggling amounts of coke or he's completely 100% straight edge and always has been. Don't ask me how I know this.
BLY:
He's so normal about alcohol I bet.
But he is giggling and kicking his feet and twirling his hair while talking to his brothers about Aayla and about the adventures of his men.
Absolutely incorrigible gossip.
Not braver after a few drinks just more prone to melting into a puddle.
Tried space MDMA once (spice?) just to say he did and hated it.
Uhhh if I do a part two it will include the bad batch and some other clones I missed.

How about how the bad batch boys (female reader) react to you giving them unexpected HUG? đŤ because we all need a hug in our lives đ as fluffy as you can make it please! Congratulations on 4000 followers đ
Unexpected First Hug
The Bad Batch X F!Reader
warnings: Mostly fluff, maybe a mention or two of reader feeling down/homesick. First hug with the Bad Batch. Some mutual pining if you squint. Female reader but can probably be read as GN too. Crosshair reunited with brothers. Not proofread.
authors note: thank you for the request! Enjoy some hugs đŤ
Echo đ¤
You missed him.
Actually, you found yourself missing him. deeply. But Echo's decision to go with Rex and Senator Chuchi had filled you with pride. However, as days turned into weeks, the void left by his absence grew more noticeable.
When you said your goodbyes, something felt incomplete. Perhaps words left unsaid or a simple handshake would have sufficed. But in the solitude of your bunk, thoughts of him kept creeping into your mind, and you couldn't help but picture him right beside you.
Then came the day when Echo surprised everyone by announcing his return to Pabu. Excitement surged through your stomach, eager to hear his tales and, most of all, to just be close to him again.
What neither of you expected, judging by the surprise on Echo's face, was when, as soon as he hopped off the gangplank, you raced over, outpacing even Omega and Hunter, and embraced him.
Your arms encircled his shoulders, your chest flushed against his, and Echo stammered your name in astonishment at the unexpected impact.
âH-Hello,â he appeared flustered by the emotion, and yet, the hug, something you'd never shared before, just felt so right.
âHi, sorry I just,â you pulled away yet your arms lingered around his shoulders, âreally missed you.â
You see his eyes widen ever so slightly and a shy smile etched on his face. âOh, well, I missed you too.â He says softly, hands ever so gently placing onto your hips. âA lot.â
Hunter đ¤
âHey, come with me.â
Hunter's voice pulled you from your thoughts as you observed Omega playing outside. You turned to face him on the gangplank, watching as he disappears inside.
You followed him back into the ship, a curious brow raised, inquiring about his intentions.
As you walked, you asked, "What do you want?" But Hunter remained tight-lipped until he stopped and faced you, arms folded. "What do you think?"
You stood before him, perplexed. "What do I think about what?"
"Your new helmet," he replied with a mischievous smirk, moving aside to reveal - of course - a brand new helmet.
For weeks, you'd been pestering Hunter for some equipment, just to enhance your safety and readiness on missions. His responses had usually been along the lines of 'maybe one day' or 'not right now,' which was understandable, given the constant struggle for credits.
Your excitement couldn't be contained as you exclaimed, "No way!" You eagerly picked up the helmet, admiring its design and paint job.
Hunter asked, "So, will that do?"
Instead of a simple "yes," you showed your gratitude by wrapping your arms around Hunter's waist, drawing him into an embrace.
Hunter felt his skin warm at the unexpected contact, and he awkwardly patted your back, his mind racing with thoughts of doing more, but uncertainty held him back. "I'll take that as a yes then," he chuckled softly, instantly missing the warmth of your touch as you pulled away.
In his own thoughts, he berated himself, thinking, "Idiot!" for not giving you a proper hug in return but seeing you ecstatic with your new gear was enough to satisfy him.
Wrecker đ¤
"Hey, are you comin'âwhat's wrong?"
Wrecker's voice broke through your thoughts at a vulnerable moment. You were overwhelmed with homesickness, and as you sought solace, Wrecker happened to discover you wiping away tears from your cheeks.
You put on a brave face, replying with a soft laugh, "Oh, nothing, don't worry. Just homesick." You felt grateful as he quietly took a seat beside you.
"Yeah, bet it's not easy being away from home when you're with us lot!" Wrecker said with a sheepish grin, but your smile didn't quite reach your eyes. Sensing your distress, Wrecker gently wrapped his arms around your shoulders, and despite your efforts to contain your emotions, tears began to flow.
Your lips quivered, and tears streamed down your cheeks. You turned into Wrecker, wrapped your arms around his neck, and pulled yourself close to him.
The contact initially stunned him, and he wore a shocked expression, but as he felt your tears on his neck and saw you burying your face, he sighed softly and embraced you just as wholeheartedly. His large hands gently rubbed your back, offering you the comfort you desperately needed.
Tech đ¤
"I believe I have something of yours," Tech announced as he walked into the cockpit, instantly piquing your curiosity. You couldn't quite recall giving him anything of yours, so you shot him a confused look. In response, he raised your datapad and playfully wiggled it in the air. "You should be careful where you leave things, especially during missions."
Your stomach plummeted, and your jaw dropped. You felt foolish for being so careless. Hunter had always stressed the importance of keeping your gear with you. The potential consequences of someone finding your device and tracking the others' locations weighed heavily on your mind. In a hushed tone, you asked, "Does Hunter know?" To your relief, Tech shook his head.
"I thought I'd do you the decency of giving you a warning. If it were Hunter who had discovered your oversight, the consequences would have been far more severe." Tech's reminder left you both relieved and also sincerely grateful for his discretion.
You stood up quickly, taking the device from Tech's grasp, and expressed your gratitude, saying, "Honestly, Tech, thank you. You didn't have to do that."
Tech remained nonchalant, replying, "I'm aware." But then, you took a step towards him. He watched you curiously, not used to being so close to you and especially as you gently wrapped your arms around his waist and pulled yourself into a hug, chin resting just in his shoulder.
He nearly dropped his own datapad at the unexpected physical contact, feeling his heart thump in his chest at the unfamiliar sensation. Tech had never been hugged before, and having someone he was growing fond of embrace him was certainly intriguing.
"Thanks again," you whisper softly in his ear before pulling away, leaving him in a state of surprise and curiosity.
Crosshair đ¤
You had been sitting there for a while, twiddling your thumbs and contemplating how to express your immense appreciation for Crosshair after the day's mission. He had saved you from a dangerous situation, and thanks to him, you were still alive and kicking. However, Crosshair was known for his intense and stoic demeanor, and you hadn't seen much gratitude directed his way since reuniting with his brothers and Omega. But, you wanted to change that. It was about time.
As you watched him at his makeshift shooting range, knocking down old canisters and bottles, you slowly made your way beside him.
"Don't say anything," he stated without even looking at you as you approached, causing you to pause with your words caught in your throat. You had anticipated this reaction from him, but you still felt the need to express your feelings.
"Butâ"
"Don't," he interrupted, lowering his rifle and glancing over his shoulder at you, his steely eyes piercing through you. "It was... nothing," he grumbled before turning his gaze away.
To him, maybe.
Disheartened, you turned to walk away, but an impulse tugged at you. You turned back to him and boldly wrapped your arms around him, pressing your cheek against his back.
Crosshair took a deep breath and stumbled slightly in his spot. But he didn't push you away. In fact, for a brief moment, he lowered his head and allowed the embrace. He hadn't felt this level of comfort in a long time. His rifle fell to the ground, and for a moment, he considered resting his hand on your arms, to touch you in return, but he resisted, not wanting to reveal his vulnerability at that moment.
"Alright, get off," he finally said after just a few seconds.
As you let go, he looked back at you however and there was just a faint hint of a smile. "You're welcome."

Ready Or Not
Howzer x fem!S/O | 1.9k words
Content: blind dates, bad first impressions, Howzer has some thoughts and feels to work through, maybe some demi vibes?, no real fluff but I think it's sweet in its own way
Prompt: I came across this concept of a "Meet Ugly" and thought it'd be interesting to explore. Used this scenario: Getting set up on a blind date and not having the best reaction when they first see each other.
Part of Operation #MoreHowzerFics
He did not have time for this.
Maybe the rest of the galaxy had been duped into thinking the war was over, but Howzer knew better. There was still a fight to be had, and a more dire one at that. A fight for his brothers. Their fates were hanging in the balance... and here he was, sitting at some cafe on Pabu waiting for a date.
He wasn't even sure how it had happened. Rex had insisted there was a reason soldiers took R&R, and even though they technically weren't soldiers anymore they should still try to relax every once in a while. Fireball had taken to saying "you need to get laid" every time Howzer was in an even slightly bad mood. Greer was always going on about how they needed to think of the future, find a dream worth fighting for, like a home or a family. And Gregor was weirdly interested in figuring out what everyone's "type" was; everywhere they went he'd point someone out and gauge their reactions.
All of that somehow had culminated in setting Howzer up on a blind date the second they touched down on Pabu. As if he had time for such things. As if he cared about such things.
And yet... here he was. Wearing his armor and a frown, but he'd still shown up. If he wasn't so busy cursing his brothers in his mind, he could have analyzed why he was here. Or whether he maybe secretly did care about such things.
His leg bounced and his narrowed eyes stared unfeeling out at the planet's glistening waters. He glanced down at his watch every few minutes, growing more upset at how the time passed without this supposedly "cute" date of his showing up. A memory of Echo whispered in the back of his mind, saying something about "Pabu time", how people here didn't need to move with the same urgency he was used to, but he didn't listen to it.
A few people passed by and gave him pleasant smiles. Some entered the patio and gave warm hugs to neighbors they recognized. An elderly couple went up to the counter, leisurely reading the menu as if they had never dined here before. One girl confidently strolled in, at first acting like she knew where she was going, and then halting in the middle of the tables and looking about in confusion. She then tried to cover and got in line to order, as if that had been her plan, even though Howzer had seen the whole thing and knew she had probably absentmindedly gone to the wrong place.
He fought back the urge to roll his eyes at these people. He wasn't really annoyed at them. If anything, he envied their peace. They didn't have family enslaved by the Empire. They didn't have uncertain futures. They were allowed to wander and smile and act a little silly. It's what he would want for his brothers once they were freed. No, he was annoyed because they weren't free. This peace was not theirs. But here he was, sitting in a cafe overlooking a beautiful view and waiting for a date as if he had earned it. How in the galaxy had he let Rex and the others convince him to do this?
Just when he started to entertain the idea of bailing, the girl from earlier caught his eye. She had made it up to the counter now and the worker was pointing over in his direction. Howzer subconsciously shifted, his back straightening and his hand settling on his thigh next to his blaster holster. Usually he'd pretend not to have noticed, let any potential threats think they were catching him unawares while all along he had the upper hand. But here, he decided to send a different message. I am aware, I see you staring, try to mess with me.
The girl followed the path that the worker had pointed her in, right to Howzer. She didn't look like a spy or some other kind of threat, but these days, who really knew. Especially when she seemed determined to appear pleasant and confident, despite the nervous gulp Howzer clocked from across the patio, not to mention the little display of carelessness he had seen from her earlier.
"Hi there," she said when she came within a few feet of his table.
She gave out a breathy laugh and Howzer frowned, waiting to see what she wanted from him.
"Um," she gulped again, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Another nervous tell. What was she hiding? "I uh... Phee told me to meet someone here. For a... a date?"
Howzer's eyes widened in realization. Kriff.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to walk right past you," the girl continued to fill in the silence. "I guess I wasn't expecting, um..."
She trialed off as she realized how the thought was sounding out loud, and then quickly tried to save face by hurrying over to the seat opposite him and pulling it out. But Howzer wasn't going to let her off the hook that easy.
"Weren't expecting... what?" he asked once she sat down. He eased his hand away from his blaster but kept his posture upright. She may not be a threat but he wasn't exactly comfortable.
She exhaled quickly with a sheepish smile. "Well, a clone."
Howzer's eyes returned to their narrowed state, sizing up this girl he found himself sitting across from. She interpreted the silence as offense and immediately started babbling.
"I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's... it's just... You know, you've all just recently started coming here... I mean, I guess I shouldn't be surprised... Of course Phee would set me up with someone I don't know, I know practically every other guy here, and there's a reason I'm not with any of them... And she's been working with clones more recently... But like, I know only a few of you are sticking around for good, so I guess that's why it didn't occur to me that..."
Howzer wasn't sure when he had started zoning out. He felt bad, but also couldn't help it. He didn't have much time for this date to begin with, and certainly no time to listen to a stranger ramble without getting to any sort of point. He was a soldier; he valued conciseness. Whatever suppressed little hope he had that maybe this date wouldn't be so bad after all, maybe he finally would find a romantic connection with someone, dissipated into the saltwater breeze.Â
He sat forward and the girl stopped spewing her thoughts, eagerly awaiting him to interject and contribute.
"Look, you seem like a nice girl," he lied. He honestly didn't really have an opinion about her one way or the other. He'd been hit on plenty of times back on Ryloth but had never felt anything by it, other than occasional annoyance when it interrupted his duties. "But it seems like we both have some disappoints over this arrangement. Why don't we cut our losses now, get some time back in our days, and part on good terms?"
Now it was her turn to frown.
"You... you're disappointed?"
Howzer was already scooting his chair back to stand. "It's nothing personal against you," he tried to reassure, though even he could hear how impolite it sounded. He hated that he was in such a situation. He should have never come in the first place.
He gave her a formal nod, almost like a salute, and then strode through the patio gate and down quiet, cobbled streets back toward the town square. Each step felt heavier and heavier and he did whatever he could to ignore the guilt twisting in his chest, even trying to look at his surroundings and focus on taking in the architecture and flora and beauty. It was a hollow focus, but he was determined to keep walking, believing he'd soon forget about this awkward encounter and the rude behavior he'd displayed, and things would go back to normal... as normal as they could be in a war.
But then a voice started to cut through to him from behind.
"Sir? Sir!"
He turned in confusion to see the girl jogging toward him. She pulled up a few feet from him, only slightly out of breath.
"Sorry. Um, I don't know your name. Or your rank."
"My rank doesn't matter anymore," he said, immediately regretting how defensive it sounded. He really was a mess today, wasn't he.
"Sure it does," she said with a small smile. "It was an accomplishment, something you should always be proud of."
Without realizing, the tenseness in his shoulders started to loosen. He took in a deep breath and said the first normal thing all day. "My name's Howzer. Captain Howzer."
Her smile grew just a bit more. "It's nice to meet you, Captain Howzer. And... I'm sorry if I came across rude or annoying before. I understand if you don't find me attractive, but I really don't want that to be your impression of me. I really wasn't disappointed to find out you were my date. In fact, I'm disappointed I didn't actually get to have you as a date. But, like I said... it's okay if you're not interested."
Howzer's heart was twisting again. She was a nice girl. Sweet, thoughtful. Still used too many words, but he supposed he didn't use enough sometimes. As far as attraction, he wasn't entirely sure he knew what that felt like, but those bright eyes and soft smile weren't so bad to look at.
"It's not that I'm not interested," he started to say slowly, but then realized he wasn't sure how to finish the thought.
The girl stepped closer. "You're just not ready?"
"Honestly, I don't know if I ever will be ready." He gave a sheepish shrug, though he was starting to feel better. He appreciated that she was helping him sort through these confusing feelings. Her eyes were closer, swimming with the reflection of the sky and what he believed to be genuine care. Before he knew it, he was elaborating. "I mean, do I like the idea of sitting down for coffee with someone and getting to know them? Of course. But to what end? I don't know what the future holds. I don't know if I can be a good friend, let alone... something else."
She nodded in understanding but still offered a different perspective. "To be fair, no one really knows what the future holds. And relationships come in all different forms. There's no one way to be a good friend. Or a good something else."
Howzer's eyes slipped away from hers, pulled toward the glistening sea in the backdrop behind her. He mulled over her words as he watched the waves, nothing but tiny little ripples from this distance. It reminded him of some of the paintings he saw back on Ryloth. He'd always been impressed with artists who could make small details seem real. They were only small strokes on a canvass but they captured a whole entire feeling.
He shook himself, not sure why he was thinking about such a thing right now. The girl was still watching him with a small but knowing smile. She stepped back and returned the nod he'd given her back at the cafe.
"I'm really glad to have met you, Captain. I wish you all the best."
She turned and started walking back the way she'd came. Howzer let her get a few steps before finally calling out.
"Wait. I didn't get your name."
She paused and smiled at him over her shoulder.
"Hope."

Massive fandom salt under the cut:
You know, if it were any other character besides Tech, if it was any other character in the exact same situation, I donât think âheâs deadâ would be the default conclusion. I really donât.
And just to be clear, Iâm not talking to people who related to or identified strongly with Tech. A lot of us feel like Star Wars kicked us in the face and weâre so used to autistic characters being disposable. I think Tech is alive*, sure, but Iâm also sympathetic to the idea that hoping he might come back is just an ask too farâespecially after the finale. I get it. Weâve got a reason to land at that conclusion.
The rest of the fandom, though?
Iâve seen people argue that Fives could be alive for years. Fivesâa secondary character (yes, heâs a secondary character, I love him and yes he got his own arc in The Clone Wars because that show was an anthology and could take time to do that, but he was a secondary character) who got shot in the chest and breathed out his last on screen in Rexâs armsâis someone who comes up every time we go to a location clones could turn up. Iâve seen arguments that Maydayâwho had an agonizing on screen deathâcould have been alive. People argue that Maul could come back. Ventress had a very unpopular on screen death and burial and DID come back. And Iâm okay with that! Iâd be cool with any of them coming back. But they all had far more definitive deaths than Tech did (Maul several times over).
So why
Exactly
Is the default position in the fandom
That the ONE main character
In the entire TBB show (in fact the only character in that show besides background stormtroopers) and most of Star Wars as a whole
Who supposedly dies off screenâremove everything else, take out the foreshadowing, take out every suspicious line, take out the total lack of confirmation and the lack of closure, remove ALL of that, we donât even need to touch it all, letâs just look at the fall itselfâin a long fall that we donât see the end of because the camera cuts away while heâs still alive
Whose body neither we NOR THE PROTAGONISTS ever see
Is totally and irrevocably dead
In Star Wars?
You know, the franchise where Echo and Gregor both got blown up and were fine, and where Fennec got shot in the gut and then laid facedown in the sand and then in a bantha for hours, and was also fine? That Star Wars? The Star Wars franchise where people live just because? Why have we collectively decided that the rules of storytelling, let alone Star Wars, donât apply to this one guy in particular?
And to be clear, I donât think the default would be, âOh heâs just alive and coming back in the next thing,â I think it would be, âHe might be alive, he might be deadâwe donât know.â
But justââheâs dead and always will be,â is such a wild conclusion for the fandom at large to come to about something this ambiguous.
*To be completely clear, when I say Tech is alive, I donât mean he was supposed to come back and then got cut. I just think heâs alive, is still coming back, and was planned to do so.
#fandom salt#not putting this in the main tag#not a chance#hereâs the thing I donât even think itâs because people donât like Tech#the fandom loves Tech as far as I can tell#with a few outliers the response has mostly been either#âI donât like it but I have to make myself accept itâ#or âignoring that so anyway he came backâ#so I donât know why âno. impossibleâ is the default here

hiiiii ! I love your writing :) I was wondering if I could request a echo x reader where itâs sorta like long distance so they only saw each other when they came to pabu or the finale, and if you could make it a hug scene like the ones he shared with omega (like the whole running and jumping blah blah blah) sorry if itâs extensive, thank you ! đŤś
[Echo x gn!reader]: Come back to you
----
----
Summary:
Emerie and Echo left Pabu a few weeks after the events on Tantiss. You haven't heard from him ever since and you hope he comes back.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: TBB S3 FINALE SPOILERS, fluff, kissing, a bit suggestive, a bit of angst. Not proofread.
Enjoy!
----
Since the attack on the beautiful island you settled in, you didn't hear anything else from Echo. Pabu had always managed to rebuild itself, adapt and go back to living normally.
Before the Empire found the small island, you and Echo had been in touch for a while, either from commlink calls or messages. After the events that made Tantiss burn to ashes, Echo came back. But, only for a short time. He left with the doctor, Emerie Karr, to try find safe homes for the remaining clones.
It made you angry, yes. But then again, it was Echo. He'd do anything for his brothers.
----
It had been a few weeks since clouds showed up in Pabu and released the water inside of them. Maybe it was the weight of the Empire on the Universe that made the rain stronger, and the mood seemed to be less...heavy.
You were standing inside your shared apartment, looking at the droplets of water falling. It had always brought a sense of comfort to you.
You had asked Hunter several times if he had any news, to which he'd always shake his head. It made you even more depressed.
If it weren't for the rest of the Batch, you'd be alone. Wrecker always forced you to go out, since he knew you wouldn't do it on your own unless it had to do with news about the rebellion, Rex, or your boyfriend.
You sighed. You truly missed him.
Suddenly, your commlink beeped, and got up. You grabbed your comm, and nervously spoke up. It wasn't the commlink that you and the Bad Batch used, it was a private 'channel' you had with Echo.
"Echo?" You whispered, nervously.
You heard a small hum and chuckle.
"Hey."
Adrenaline shot through your veins at the sound of his voice.
"Wh- What? How? Where are you? Are you okay?" You asked, a thousand questions running through your head.
Though you could only hear his voice, a wave of relief washed your body.
"Yeah, I'm alright. I'm currently in Coruscant, in Rex's Underground level base. We're trying to collect all the remaining stuff before he leaves. I'm helping him out." He explained.
You sighed in relief.
"I'm so happy to hear your voice. Why haven't you said anything for the past three week until now?" You asked.
"I've been very busy. We're still trying to find out anything about the nameless clones. I haven't been...that close to my commlink, either." He said, mumbling the last part.
"It's...fine." You replied.
Echo seemed to pick up your tiredness and your sadness, maybe disappointment even, in your voice.
"How... about you? Are you doing alright?" He softly asked.
"Yeah, I just really miss you." You answered, with a small sigh.
Echo let out a small chuckle.
"I miss you too."
You considered telling about how you felt.
"I'm actually not doing great. It's been a rough few weeks and I really needed you but I'm not sure you were free and I didn't want to bother you and-" You stopped, closing your eyes and pinching the bridge of your nose.
"I just wish you were here."
Silence came over the comm channel, before Echo finally spoke up.
"I'm coming over." He suddenly said.
Your eyes widened.
"Wha- no! You can't. You're a thousand clicks away-" he cut you off.
"I'm coming over. That's final, okay?"
You sighed. Your boyfriend was stubborn.
"Okay. I'll wait for you." You replied, before he left the comm channel.
...
A few hours later, the dark night sunk into Pabu. Not that it was super visible, as the clouded skies still let the rain fall.
It was endearing to see how much Echo cared for you, even though he was busy most of the time.
You decided to get dressed, and wait for him on the side of the landing platform, below a huge tree root that provided you shelter from the pouring rain.
Your heart rate sped up, and your knees slightly trembled at the sight of a ship, most likely Echo's, approaching the landing platform.
The big shuttle eventually landed on the island, and you took a step forward. The rain didn't matter anymore, not even when it was soaking your clothes and body.
The ramp lowered, and butterflies filled your stomach, taking your breath away.
And there he was, the guy that had stolen your heart the second you saw him walking inside your coffee shop all those months ago; the man that had swore to you loyalty, even if your relationship was distant; your boyfriend. Echo.
He came down the ramp. Just when his feet touched the ground, you ran towards him and hugged him.
Echo hugged back, burying his nose on your neck.
"Hey." He said.
You smiled.
"Hey."
You two stayed there for a long time, not caring about the rain, not caring about anything at all. What mattered was that Echo was there. Your Echo. He was real. It wasn't a dream.
"I missed you so much." You mumbled, bringing your lips close to his.
"I missed you too." He answered, finally pulling you into the kiss you were desperately yearning for for a long time now.
You kissed back, bringing your hands to his hips, as his hand rested on your cheek.
However, his hand lowered to your butt, giving it a light squeeze: enough to make you squeak and let his tongue explore your mouth.
It had been such a long time since you felt him so close to you it almost felt like a dream.
He pulled away.
"We better go home, seems like rain won't be stopping for a while." He suggested smiling.
You nodded.
"Let's go."
Echo had finally come back home.

Through Your Eyes | Part 2 - More than Meets the Eye (Joel x Reader)
A/N: ITâS FINALLY FUCKING HERE!!!! Iâm so sorry it took so long! Iâve been sitting on this for almost a year and itâs just been evolving and marinating and improving, and I hope it lives up to the hype. Itâs time for it to be set free. ⨠This is truly a hybrid of game and show Joel. I see them both, hence both gifs.
I do not own The Last of Us or itâs characters. Sadly. But I carry them in my heart. Does that count for something? My soul says yes.
Warnings: Oooo, this oneâs a doozy. So many things. (Let me know if I miss anything.) đŽâđ¨ Some original characters, mentions of an elderly family member passing, lots of canon violence and swearing, (this one is a big one. Like a lot. Thereâs a hefty amount of swearing.) mention of attempted sexual assault (not to reader) without detail, graphic description of injury (not to reader) and blood, attempted abduction? Reader is a badass and sports a black eye and bloody knuckles with pride. Panic attack? But Joel scares it away. đ We round it all out with obscene amounts of fluff and humor between it all, sweet moments, and just soft things. Itâs me. I canât not. No use of Y/N.
Word count: 11,928
Thank you to @fordo-kixed-rex for reading over this five bazillion times for me and fangirling over it when I was having my down moments. Youâre a real one.

You rocked in the saddle of your horse as she slowly followed behind the first few people in the group.
Left.
Right.
Left.Â
Right.
Over.
And over.
And over.
Some quicker footfalls to your left made you turn your head, seeing Joel atop his horse come alongside you before slowing his steed back to the slow crawl the rest had fallen into.
âYou okay?â He mumbled. âLook like youâre about to fall asleep.â
âDonât tempt me,â you groused, turning back to face forward with a yawn.
He huffed out a laugh before shaking his head at you almost imperceptibly, nudging his horse to go a little faster toward the front of the group.
Watching him with narrowed brows, you saw everyone else make sure to steer clear of him, giving him a wide berth and a clear path to the front. Tommyâs words from that first day rang in your head.
âYou saw a side of Joel right out the gate some wait a lifetime to miss.â
Joel whistled loudly, gathering everyoneâs attention, as the whole party came to a stop. âAlright! Listen up!â Some grumbles began to go around, but stopped with one crook of his brow. âThatâs an awful lot of yappinâ for people suppose tâbe listeninâ.âÂ
If a pin had dropped in the grass underfoot, it would have echoed in the vast forest around you. Even nature seemed to heed his warning, only a few stray birds chirping somewhere in the distance brave enough to break the silence. A lone frog echoed in a nearby creek bed. A few bugs buzzed by, trying to ease the tension, and it seemed to work, because finally Joel went on after staring at everybody.
âWe need to pick up the pace. This isnât a leisurely walk to the park and back. We have a goal we need to get to, and back, and we got one week to do it.â
âWho made you the boss?â Some poor brave soul asked from behind you. A young man, maybe in his mid twenties from how he sounded. You didnât dare turn to look at him, not wanting to move your eyes from Joel, because if looks could killâŚ. Joel would currently be facing a serious charge for the way he was glowering at the faceless voice behind you.
âCommon sense.â A few small laughs went around the group, the corner of Joelâs mouth twitching up just slightly when he saw you shake your head with a smirk. âThis was my run- our run,â he pointed to you then back to himself before retaking the reins to his horse, âand the council thought it best you all tag along to bring the most back we could. Now I donât mind-â
âYes, you do,â another voice behind you said, female, almost teasingly, making another round of soft laughter go around.
âFine. I mind. A lot. But weâre here now. So, since youâre tagging along on our run, what we say goes. Agreed?â When no one protested, he gestured you up to the front with a tilt of his head, going on while you nudged your horse forward.Â
âNow, we need to move faster. Any bandits or infected we pass by would pick us off like flies at this pace. The cart will be the slowest, I want the four of you to stay with the cart at all times and watch all four sides.â He pointed to four individuals who nodded, moving toward the cart pulled by a single horse and rider.Â
âThe three of you pull up the rear.â More pointing and nodding. âThe rest of you, in the middle. Keep your eyes open. Everyone keep at a steady pace, we camp at sundown wherever that is. Donât push your horses too far.â He began to turn his own mount to move forward. âNot their fault weâre a bunch of dumbasses.â
âI think thatâs the most Iâve ever heard him say at once,â you heard someone mutter behind you, making you smile.
âAt once? Try ever,â another retorted.
Joel looked over at you. âWhat? Why you grinninâ?â
âThey respect you.â
He scoffed. âThat so hard to believe?â
âItâs a side of you Iâve not seen before. Iâm used to bad puns and screwdrivers, notâŚ.â You made a swooping gesture to the group behind you, âthat.â
He shook his head once, tisking at you. âShows what you know. Iâm actually partly in charge of security around Jackson.â
Your eyes widened as you turned as much as your saddle would allow to look at him, the leather creaking against the movement. âReally?â
He nodded once in confirmation, a proud smile starting up his face. âOnly a part time typeâf thing, and itâs purely on a trial basis right now, butâŚ. Yeah.â He grinned brightly at you. âThe jokinâ and woodworkinâ are just for fun.â The smile turned somewhat dopey and lopsided.
âThereâs more to you than meets the eye, Joel Miller.â He rolled his eyes at you, the grin melting into a scoff and his signature sour expression with impressive speed. Though his eyes still shone brightly, giving away his true amusement. âAnd Iâm gonna try to see it all.â
Shaking his head at you again, Joel looked back forward, nudging his horse to go a bit faster and pull ahead of you. âNah. Not that deep, darlinâ.â
Urging your mount forward, you maneuvered to your right, and fell in beside him with a grin. âThatâs what you think.â
Joel tilted his head down and to the side toward you as he spoke for emphasis, keeping his eyes forward. âThatâs what I know.â He cut his gaze to you briefly after a moment to try and drive his point home before straightening back up in his saddle, his eyes going studiously back to the wide expanse of land ahead.Â
Your grin melted into a smirk, seemingly a new permanent fixture since moving to Jackson. Or more specifically, since moving in with Joel and Ellie. That thought made the side of your mouth tick even higher. âWeâll see.â
Xxx
In the chaos of starting up a new life in Jackson, youâd overlooked one little detail. While you could repair and paint just about anything on your own, you were shit at stitching any stuffed toys back together Joel happened on during runs. It was possible, but it was slow going, and to be honest, looked a bit like field dressings for a battle wound instead of repairs.Â
Youâd thrown the last attempt of an old wrinkled teddy bear at Joel when heâd called it Sargent Cuddles, Ellie only adding to the confirmation when she asked if you could make an eyepatch for the bear instead to cover the deep scar youâd given it by way of cross stitches.
Halfway through that first week, youâd walked into the townâs seamstress with the best smelling cinnamon loaf the bakery had to offer, fresh and steaming, under your arm. When the girl behind the counter stopped what she was doing, setting down the socks she was darning while her nose went high in the air like a bloodhound as she took a deep sniff with her eyes glassed over, you grinned.Â
Target acquired.
âCan I help you?â Her voice was soft and kind, and her smile as she rose to her feet from the chair helped settle any trepidation you felt about reaching out.
People hadnât always been kind about your hobby, for one reason or another, hence why you came with bribes at the ready. But you had a feeling this time would be different. You smirked as she nonchalantly eyed the loaf under your arm.
âHi! Yeah! Iâm the one who restores the toys? I opened up in the old bookstore down the street?â You introduced yourself, and recognition went off behind her eyes at the sound of your name.
âOh! Joelâs girl!â
Your breath caught in your chest as your head gave a little shake of confusion at the declaration. âWhat?â
She chuckled somewhat nervously. âNo! No, not like that, I meanâŚ. His neighbor. His new lodger. The one in the attic.â She was talking a mile a minute. âNot his âhisâ girlâŚ.â She slapped a palm to her forehead, cradling her head in her hand as she rocked it back and forth before pulling back just enough to look at you conspiratorially. âBut can you imagine?â
After a moment of silence where you both simply stared at each other, soft laughter took over, melting the tension between you.
âLet me start over,â she huffed, lowering her hand from her face to extend it to you in greeting. âIâm Jane. Nice to meet you.â
As you shook her hand, you couldnât help but smile at her antics. âLikewise.â
Jane turned her attention back down to the socks she had abandoned when you came in, fiddling with them absently before she looked back up at you, a soft tint of embarrassment staining her cheeks. âSo, what brings you here?â
âOh! Right.â Setting the loaf on the counter, you shrugged the backpack off your shoulder and set it down beside the bread, fishing out the few stuffed animals Joel had brought back that needed the most help. âI was hoping we could work out a deal. I can do some basic stitching, but even then, Joel and Ellie have compared my work to that of a field medic more than anything.âÂ
Jane snickered at the comment as she took one of the worn stuffed animals, turning it over in her hands and analyzing it as you continued.
âPeople trade me all sorts of goods for these, like this loaf.â You gestured to it with a bob of your head, then placed your hand on the still steaming bread. âThe bakerâs son has a birthday coming up, and she wanted something special. Joel and Tommy donât always bring back stuffed animals so it wouldnât be constant work, but I was hoping when they do, I could bring them here, and we could work out some sort of trade system for the repairs-â
âNo need,â Jane said, smiling down at the stuffed tiger in her hands. You arched a brow at her, waiting for her to go on, and she finally tore her gaze away from the toy and up to you. âI had one just like this as a kid. Loved it to bits. It looked like it had been through the wars before I lost it, patches everywhere and stuffing missing so it was lumpyâŚ. I learned to sew on that thing.â Jane looked back at the toy again fondly. âIâll help you. All I ask is that I get to keep this one, and maybe one every few runs if they happen to stumble on any others like I used to have. IâŚ. I had a collection.âÂ
When she brought her gaze back up to meet yours, her eyes were misty. âIt was small, but it was everything to me. Got a new one every year when I was little from my grandparents. Stopped when I hit that certain age where adults deem you too old for those things. Which was fine.â She sniffed, a tear falling silently down her cheek. âThen my grandpa heâŚ. He started having memory issues.â She took a deep, shaky breath, smiling sadly at the toy. âRegressed a certain amount of yearsâŚ. Just so happened to be when I was a certain age, still, in his mind, and he got me a stuffed toy every year for my birthday, untilâŚ.â
You reached out, placing your hand over hers. âKeep whatever you want. You donât even have to do repairs to keep them.â She began to protest, swiping at her tears with the back of the hand still holding the tiger when you squeezed her other hand gently. âThe whole reason Iâm doing this in the first place is to help bring some joy back into the world. And I want you to be happy, you deserve to be happy, without me lording something over you like demanding a trade in exchange-â
Jane flipped her hand in your grip, squeezing you like you had her. âAnd doing this will make me happy.â You studied her for a long moment. âDo you know how boring it is to darn a sock?â You snorted a laugh, and she smiled. âEverybody in this damn town needs to take better care of their socks, I swearâŚ. Iâm up to my eyeballs in them. Nothing would make me happier than to work on something that would be giving back more to the community than dumb stinky, holey, wool.â
With a nod, you gave her hand still in your grip one firm shake, a grin crawling up your face. âItâs a deal. Iâll try to tackle the easy ones and send the few in need of more love your way. But!â You let go of her hand and held up a finger, wagging it like you were lecturing a petulant child. âIâm also dropping some of these goods by, too.â Patting the bread on the counter before softly pushing it closer toward her, you laughed at her show stopping grin and good-natured roll of her eyes in response.
âFine,â she mumbled around the smile, the sound anything but angry. âIf you insist.â
A few days later, youâd dropped a few stuffed animals off to her that Joel had stumbled on during patrol, Ellie tagging along with you. She had opted to stay outside the shop while you went in though, leaning against the doorframe by the front window, taking in the sights and sounds of the city street.
âNot a fan of needles,â she mumbled, glancing into the shop as you opened the door to go in.
âThis isnât that kind of needle.â
âI said what I said.â
You didnât press her on it, just nodded and mumbled an âokayâ before disappearing into the shop.
âHey!â Jane greeted you, pushing aside her current project immediately to make room for the box you were carrying. âOh, these are cute!â She picked one up in each hand, lifting them up to look at them better before trading them out for another and repeating the process until each patient had been analyzed. âTheyâll be easy.â She turned to you with a smile. âIâll be done by this weekend.â
âNo rush!â You assured her as she set the box behind the counter. âIf youâre not done until then, youâll have to leave them with Tommy, though. Iâm going out of town with Joel on a run, itâll take a few days, maybe a week max. We leave tomorrow. Though, no, actually, you can just leave them with Ellie, what am I saying-â
âYouâre doing what?â She interrupted you.
Focusing back on her face, you tried to get back on topic. âWhat? Oh, yeah! Weâre going back to where I lived right before Jackson to get the stores of paints and stuff I had. Bucket loads of it, no pun intended.â You turned to look at Ellie over your shoulder. âSheâs rubbing off on me in more ways than one, I guessâŚ.â
âIs it just you and Joel?â
Her question caught you off guard, pulling your gaze back to her with knit brows. âIt was going to be, but the council decided it was a âwaste of resourcesâ, so we have to take a little group with us. Why?â
âIâm coming with you.â No hesitation, just straight to the point.
Your eyes went wide. âWhat? Why?â
âYou said you lived about a week north, right? Near the university?â
âYeah. Because of the university, there were storage units nearby, used to be climate controlled before everything, now theyâre just enclosed spaces with extra security to keep clickers nâ shit out. I lived in one, worked in another, and stored in a third. Got pretty good at picking locks, too.â You smirked.
Her eyes were wide and serious. âThe ones by the north end of campus?â
Your expression went flat. âDonât tell meâŚ.â
âI lived in an abandoned place on the south end of campus.â She had started to grin like a Cheshire Cat. âWe probably were within spittinâ distance of each other and didnât even know it.â
A laugh barked out of your chest, several more tumbling out after it until you were bent over her counter on your elbows, wheezing. Pushing up to rest on your forearms you met her gaze again, amusement on both your faces. âNo fucking way.â
âI left a sewing machine behind. It was there when I moved in, and I hope itâs still there and still works, heaven knows, butâŚ. The buildings by the school had power when the Fireflies were there. Iâd use it when I could, and I was able to do so much more work. Now that Iâm here I could actually make use of it with all that I have on my plate, and the dam giving us electricityâŚ.â She sighed dreamily. âIâm going. Thatâs final.â
Before you could respond, the bell over the door jingled, making you stand up straight and turn to look at the newcomer.
âEverything okay?â Ellieâs voice was soft as she poked her head in, causing you to do a double take. âI heard raised voices.â
You nodded once. âYeah. Yeah, weâre all good. Just excited. Turns out we lived right by each other before moving here.â
âOh shit! No way!â She stood up straight with a wide grin, stepping fully into the shop and letting the door close behind her.
âLanguage,â you scowled.
âSorry, Miss Fanny,â she looked sheepish, spinning on her heel dramatically before exiting the shop.
You turned back to Jane who looked on amused. âShe thinks sheâs funny because I use a fanny pack.â Plopping onto a tall stool that sat in front of the counter, you stared at your friend.
Jane let out a low âahâ as if she now understood everything.
Knitting your brows before arching one, you leaned on one elbow on the counter. âWhat?â
âWhy is she outside?â She asked as she fiddled with some projects behind the counter.
âSaid she âwasnât a fan of needlesâ,â you mumbled, air quoting her words as you turned to look back at Ellie through the window. âWhatever that means.â
Jane hummed in understanding, drawing your eyes back to her. âTommy got really drunk at the bar one night after I first got here. Saying all kinds of shit. People kept walking off because he wouldnât shut up, so I opted to walk him home to Maria. It wasnât far, and heâs a good guy. Anyway, on the way to his house, he starts mutterinâ about his brother and his new kid, how they just got back from some failed medical something or other with the Fireflies, most of it was unintelligible.âÂ
She crossed her arms over her chest, looking at Ellie. You followed her gaze, finding the teen walking back and forth in the shade in front of the building, scuffing her heels as she went, and kicking rocks.
âThen, he got real sad, and said somethinâ about how heâd sent them to the university right after seeinâ him for the first time in months. It was to get info on where to go for the medical procedure, I guess. Anyway.â She took a deep breath. âApparently they got ambushed there, and Joel got stabbed real bad, almost didnât make it. That girl out there had to care for him for weeks, drag him somewhere safe, stitch him upâŚ.â
Your breath caught in your chest as she paused for emphasis, unable to tear your eyes from Ellie as emotion swelled in your gut for your fellow housemates, but especially the tiny redhead on the other side of the glass.
âTommy was real broken up about it. Said Joel almost died, and he felt like it was his fault. Ellie had to hunt, and somehow got Joel medicine.â
You turned to face Jane again. âHow?â
âThose details werenât real clear.â She shrugged. âLike I said, he was plastered. Maybe this whole story is some drunken imagining, but the way he sounded compared to all the shit he said in the bar?â Her face melted into something between sadness and understanding. âIâm inclined to believe him.âÂ
She took a hesitant breath, but stopped before letting it out slowly, then closed her eyes for a moment. After another shallow breath, she opened them to focus on you, and tried again, her voice even softer still.Â
âWeâd made it to his house by this point. Maria had come out and was helping me to get him inside, up the porch stepsâŚ. And he just broke down halfway up. Sat down, broke down, and started sobbing. Made it even harder to understand.â She rolled her eyes and you chuckled softly. âHe said something about the medicine came at too high a cost. That Ellie paidâŚ. Would be payingâŚ.â Jane swallowed roughly, looking to the girl through the window with something akin to admiration, then back at you. âHe said it changed her.â
âChanged?â You could only whisper.
âBroke her. He said whatever happened was enough to take a spitfire, and make her an ember.â You both looked back at the teen one last time. âSheâs improved a lot. Iâve seen her grow, come out of her shell just since Iâve been here, butâŚ. Itâs her eyes. Theyâre haunted. Whatever happened out thereâŚ. It didnât stay out there. And it ainât leavinâ anytime soon.â
âThat explains a lot. About both of them,â you mused quietly.
âJoel I donât know much about. Heâs just the town grump.â
Despite the dark turn the conversation had taken, you burst out laughing, seeing Ellie turn toward the window at the sound with a grin.
âEveryone keeps telling me that, even him, but I just donât see it!â
Janeâs face turned up in amusement softly. âWell, maybe youâre just one of the lucky ones like Ellie, and he likes you.â
âI think he tolerates me.â You looked across your shoulder at her, getting back to your feet from the stool youâd been perched on and faced her fully. âI live in his house. Itâd be awkward if we hated each other.â
âTrue,â she grinned smugly.
âWhat?â
âYouâll figure it out.â
Xxx
Jane came riding up beside you, smiling wider than the canyon youâd passed a few miles back.
âIâm gonna regret askinâ but what in the hell has you happier than a butterfly on a daisy?â
âThatâs not a real saying,â Jane mumbled, looking at you through skeptical, knit brows.
âDoesnât mean itâs not applicable,â you countered, your own brows arched high in challenge.Â
With a roll of her eyes and a sigh, Jane circled back to the topic at hand. âWeâre out in the open!â She whispered, excitement lacing her tone. âI love Jackson, donât get me wrong, but itâs so nice to be able to breathe.â
A smirk made its way up your face. âI know what you mean. Problem is you trade security for a great wide unknown. The possibilities of things that can go wrong out here are much scarier than anything in Jackson.â
She pulled a face. âNothinâs gonna go wrong when we have a man like Joel leading us. He knows what heâs doing.â
âMost of the time,â you mumbled. âThe rest heâs just winginâ it.â
âHeard that,â Joel grumbled as he passed by your other side, pulling in front of you from the back of the group where he was making rounds. âYouâre one to talk.â He looked over his shoulder at you, face stoic as ever, but his eyes showed his amusement.
âI know things,â you shot back, head tilted back to look down your nose at him. âLots of stuff.â
âOh, I see,â his tone was condescending, but playful. âStuff.â
âAnd things.â
âOh, we mustn't forget the thingsâŚ.â
âYeah, okay.â You looked to the side with an unamused grin. âFuck you, Joel.â
âI mean, if youâre offerinââŚ.â
Your jaw dropped as your head turned slowly to face him, eyes wide as you simply stared at him in shock.
He smirked. âWhat? You can dish it, but you canât take it?â Joelâs tone was nothing but teasing, his eyes dancing with unspoken amusement.
Narrowing your eyes at him, his smile faltered slightly. âYou have no idea what I can take.â Nudging your horse forward to fall into step beside him, you held his gaze with your head high, brow arched. âAnd I donât think you want to find out.â
âWhaddya mean?â
âWhen I push back. You wouldnât be able to handle it, Joel.â
He cleared his throat. âLook, I was just messing around. This wasnât supposed to take such a serious turn. Iâm sor-â
You couldnât take it anymore. The laugh tumbled out of your mouth before you could catch it, more and more coming out to join it.
Joel lowered his brows, glaring at you. âThat ainât funny.â
Wheezing, you pointed at him. âYou should have seen your face!â
A horse trotting up beside you made you turn, expecting to see Jane once again at your side, but all you were met with was her horse, sans rider. You thought quickly enough to grab the reins and guide it along with you, before you looked back at Joel, finding his eyes already searching the group. Turning, you tried to sit higher in your saddle for a better vantage point, when movement out of the corner of your eye caught your attention.
Near the tree line, Jane struggled in the arms of a man as he yanked her back towards the cover of the woods, none too delicately, one hand over her mouth to keep her quiet.
âJane!â You yelled at the top of your lungs, and you could see when she heard you, her body going rigid in her captor's hold.
The man yelped, pulling his hand back from her mouth and shaking it.Â
She must have bit him.Â
Before you could fully process much of anything else, Jane was screaming at the top of her lungs, âRun!âÂ
The hand was back over her mouth before she could say anything else, the raider pulling them both back until they disappeared into the trees, Jane putting up a violent struggle as they went.Â
Not willing to look away from where she disappeared, you called out for Joel, and he was beside you in an instant. His horse picked up on the sudden unease spreading over the group, shifting its weight from foot to foot restlessly.
âWeâll get her, darlinâ,â Joel reassured in a low voice. âDonât you worry. We ainât-â
Suddenly the entire group was surrounded by raiders, guns and knives of various sizes pointed towards every member of your party, violent threats being traded back and forth from both sides.Â
While you had thought your group was large, this bandit raid made your numbers pale in comparison. At least double your head count at first glance, easily. And you had a feeling more were lurking in the shadows somewhere, if what had happened to Jane was any indication.Â
You noticed that while several of the men aimed menacing looking rifles at your party, they lacked the magazines full of ammunition to back them up. Leaning toward Joel as subtly as you could when they ordered everyone to dismount their horses, you mumbled under your breath, âThey have no bullets.â
He looked at you in confusion for just a moment, brows knit until one of the raiders yelled loudly and pulled his attention away.Â
Falling in behind him, you whispered again, âTheir rifles. They have no ammunition. No magazines. Itâs all for show.â You saw the moment the information registered for him, his shoulders setting a bit broader, and his head held just that much higher.
A raider a few feet to your right was eyeing you skeptically, looking like he might dismount his horse any second and make a move toward you, so you pretended to trip into the back of Joel, smirking into his chest when he caught you.
Without missing a beat, his arm firmly around your shoulders to steady you, Joel went straight for negotiations, trying to talk the men down, offering supplies, whatever they wanted. You werenât far from Jackson, it was a smart move. You could get back and recoup your losses in no time. But people? You canât replace them.
âNah,â the head honcho said with a sarcastic sneer. âWeâve got somethinâ elseân mind.â
You didnât like the sound of that.
The raider in charge gestured Joel over to a smaller group of his men, which he obeyed reluctantly. After looking down at you for a moment, offering the most subtle nod youâd ever seen a person give, he began to move toward the small group of raiders.Â
The boss stopped him just short of the rest and asked him a question in a low voice, which Joel answered softly, shooting you a look which you couldnât quite read. You couldnât quite make out what he said, either, but then the head raider decided to make a scene, show who was in charge, and it all made sense.Â
In a loud voice, full of bravado and misplaced charisma, the raider turned back to your group with arms spread wide, rifle held lazily in one hand, and called for Joelâs second in command - Will - to hop down and join his âfearless leaderâ.Â
Surrounded by the smaller group of thugs, you could tell what the goal wasâŚ. They meant to make a spectacle for the rest of you. Take the leaders down, the rest will follow. But Joel didnât let them get that far. He mumbled something to Will so subtly, you almost missed it, but you saw the younger manâs eyes dart to one of the raiderâs guns, and you immediately knew where this was headed.
It all went by in a blur, and yet it was like you could see every detail in painful accuracy. And you couldnât look away.
In an instant Joel had dropped three of the men in the smaller group surrounding them.
Will another two.
They both had commandeered their own rifles back off of those men, and they were now aimed at the remaining two raiders around their small group.Â
The one in front of Joel began to move forward, only making Joel smirk as he jerked the bolt action on the rifle. âTry it.â The raider stopped, making Joelâs smirk only rise higher up his cheek. âGood choice.â
Thatâs when all hell broke loose.Â
It was almost like someone kicked a pile of ants. The stillness of the valley you were in was broken and everyone swarmed at once. A cacophony of sounds clashing all around you.Â
You went on autopilot for most of it, simply fighting for your life and that of those in your group. It could have been hours or only minutes later, but the next time you really started to pay attention, or frankly, were able to focus on any one thing in particular, you saw a raider sneaking up on Will a few paces in front of you, and you lifted the rifle youâd snagged off of one of the men youâd taken down.
âHey, bucko!â The raider froze and turned to you with a sneer, the expression falling off his face when he came nose to nose with the muzzle of your rifle. You cocked the bolt action just for added effect, chambering a bullet as you somehow had found the one locked and loaded gun the raiders had. Hands lifted in surrender, he slowly took a resigned step backwards, grip tightening around the knife still clutched in his right hand. âDrop it,â you ordered, narrowing your eyes at his slight smirk. âNice and easy, now.â
Will turned to see what the fuss was, his eyes going wide when he realized what had happened. He looked between you and the raider from over the banditâs shoulder, raising a brow at you in question, but you motioned him on with a jerk of your head to the left, keeping the rifle braced on your right shoulder and aimed at the raider. âI got it. Go help the others.â
Nodding, Will took off toward the remaining chaos, leaving you with the scumbag at the end of your barrel. He started to move after Will but you tisked, taking a step closer. âNot a good idea.â The lowlife hissed through his teeth in aggravation, but you cut him off before he could even start in on an actual sentence. âKnife. Ground. Now.â With a half step forward for emphasis, you gestured toward the field underfoot with your rifle before centering your sights back on their target.Â
The man arched his back away from you as you took the small step closer, his hands shooting up higher beside his head. He then began to slowly lower to his haunches to lay the blade on the grass, his other hand still held up in surrender. His eyes flitted from the weapon to something behind you, and before he could set it all the way down, or you could turn to look, an arm wrapped around your neck, cutting off your air supply.
Both the man behind you and the man in front of you laughed, cheering at your misfortune as you dropped your rifle, the weight of the weapon jerking its strap across your shoulders as it fell to your side.Â
You clawed at the arm wrapped around your neck, gasping for air, and grunting as you tried to get a shot in with your elbow, but he pinned down your arms with his other arm wrapping around your torso.
A voice close to your ear leered, âDonât worry, sweetheart. Itâll all be over soon.â
The raider in front of you suddenly started screaming, dropping the blade in his hand in order to clutch his knee, blood pouring violently from a wound made by a large pocket knife youâd know anywhere protruding from its side.Â
âDonât move!â
All three sets of eyes pulled over to find Joel standing just a few feet away, rifle raised and aimed at the raider now in a heap on the ground. His gun swung over to the man still holding you hostage, a dark chuckle rippling out through the chest pressed closely to your spine at the movement, and it made your skin crawl.
âLet âer go,â Joel said in a low voice, something dark and menacing thrown right back at the thief trying to steal your life away.
âNah,â the man said after a minute, amusement heavy in his tone. âWeâre just havinâ too much fun, arenât we, sweetheart?â He tightened his grip around your neck as he pulled you closer, squishing his cheek to yours in mock affection.
You mumbled something as best you could, but it came out all garbled from the pressure on your windpipe.
âAw, Iâm sorry, Iâm beinâ mean, arenât I?â His tone was mocking. He loosened his grip slightly, the arm around your midsection disappearing altogether as he twisted slightly to get a better view of your face. âNow, try that again?â
âI said,â your voice was hoarse from the struggle, so you cleared your throat, shifting your weight slightly as you looked to Joel with wide eyes in mock fear. âI said-â In one smooth motion, you swung the butt of your rifle up and back, and slammed the man in the face, squinting when blood sprayed out of his mouth and onto your cheek.
Taking the opportunity, you elbowed him in the ribs, before stomping on his foot, spinning around once his arm around your neck released you and kneeing him in the crotch.Â
Stepping closer to him once he fell to his knees cradling his damaged manhood, you looked down at him as you wiped his blood from your cheek with the back of your sleeve. âI said fuck you.â
With a quick jerk of your knee to his face, the raider fell backwards, out cold. You turned to face his friend who laid in a ball on the ground, hands gripped tightly around the knife still protruding from his knee.
âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry!â He began to try and scramble back, looking to Joel for some sort of help as you approached.
Joel only shrugged, looking at you with wide eyes for just a moment before turning back to the poor man. âHell hath no fury ân all thatâŚ.â
Kneeling in front of the man, you smiled disarmingly sweet. Reaching out to grip the knife, you looked up at Joel. âThis yours?â Lifting a brow at your rhetorical question, you knew very well it was his, he nodded. With a yank, you pulled it out of the manâs leg, his screams cut short when you elbowed him in the face, knocking him out like his companion.
Lifting your rifle slightly, Joel began to make a fuss, âDarlinâ, theyâre down-â but he stopped when you over exaggeratedly clicked on the safety, lifting a sarcastic brow at him. Rising to your feet, you wiped the blade off on your jeans before closing it and handing it back to Joel.
He took it cautiously, watching as you rubbed at your throat with a wince. âThanks.â
âNo, thank you. If you hadnât shown up and distracted them, I wouldnât have been able to get the jump on âem.â
He looked at the two men before looking back at you, his eyes flitting down to the rifle for the briefest of moments. âLooks like you wouldâve been just fine.â
You leaned in closer to him, adjusting the weaponâs strap across your chest. âTake the compliment, Joel.â
He grinned softly. âYes maâam, Miss Fanny.â
You groaned at the nickname. âYou know what? I donât even really mind.â
It looked like Joel wanted to say more, but other members of your group came running up, looking around frantically only to find all the enemies already taken care of.
âWe didnât hear any shots,â Will said absently, staring at the two motionless forms on the ground after a wary glance. âThought you might need some help.â After a long moment of silence, he looked from you, to Joel, then the raiders. âThey still alive?â He pointed toward the men, one of them stirring with a pained moan.
âOnly just,â Joel mumbled, watching the one man begin to roll to his side, the one who had held on to you, before his gaze flicked to the other, noticing his breaths becoming shallower and shallower. Gesturing to the latter with his rifle still held in his hands, he looked back up at Will. âThat oneâs not longed for this world if you donât get something to stop the bleedinâ. Need information from both, preferably.â
Will nodded, motioning to the others with a nod of his head, quickly moving toward the raiders.
You had turned toward Joel, your back to the men when a twisted voice rose up behind you, slurring around laughter as if it knew the funniest joke in all the world.Â
âWell, sweetheart, Iâm just so goddamn sorry things didnât work out âtween us.âÂ
Joel glared at the raider over your shoulder. âStop talking, asshole,â he grumbled, rolling his eyes as he took a step closer to the man, slightly in front of you. Turning to face the man yourself, you thought youâd steeled yourself for whatever youâd see, but the twisted smirk you were met with made your stomach drop.Â
Laughter turned to wheezing, wet coughs before the man spit off to the side in front of him, blood painting the ground an ugly, violent color. He lifted his head just enough to look at you again, snickering as he peered through his lashes. âI had such plans for youâŚ.â
âI said be quiet,â Joelâs voice had grown more firm, and he opted to step to the side, obscuring your view of the creep instead of taking any steps closer.
âOh, but they were nothinâ compared to what we were gonna do to that little friend of yoursâŚ. That blonde? Whoo! She was feisty!â
âCan somebody shut him the fuck up!â Joel bellowed, turning to the group simply standing by and watching the exchange.
Will shrugged off his outer layer flannel, balling it up as he stomped toward the man and began to shove it in his mouth.
The man weaseled back away from the cloth, shouting with wild eyes, âYouâll never find her!â His following laughter was muffled around the material, manic and unhinged.
âWill, I need you toâŚ.â Joel trailed off when you put a hand on his shoulder, pushing him to the side gently. He tried to stop you walking towards the lunatic, but you met his gaze with your own, unwavering, and he let you go, following close behind, one hand adjusting his grip on his rifle as he held it loosely just in case.
Kneeling down in front of the man, you got close to his face. âWhat did you do with Jane?â Your voice was so low and quiet, you barely recognized it.
âWouldnât you like to know?â The man mumbled around the shirt, eyes wild and sure of himself.Â
Looking down toward the ground, you huffed out an unamused laugh. âIâm going to ask you one more time,â you lifted your gaze to look at him straight on again, âand youâre going to tell me, or else my friends are going to be not so nice to you.â The man scoffed. âWhat did you doâŚ. with Jane?â
The man leaned forward, his nose almost touching yours. âGo fuck yourself, bitch.â
Without hesitation, you slammed Joelâs pocket knife youâd swiped from his jacket a moment ago into the manâs hand where it rested on the ground with your left hand, yanking the shirt out of his mouth as he screamed with your right, and tackled him backwards onto the ground, pinning your right forearm against his throat. As he struggled against your hold, you twisted the knife still gripped tightly in your hand, making him settle into the dirt.
âOkay! Okay! Okay! Fuck! Just stop!â He looked at Joel with wide, wild eyes. âGet the bitch off me!âÂ
You noticed some of your party moving toward you, but they stopped with a hand motion from Joel.
He studied you with an unreadable expression before looking back at the man and jutting his chin toward you. âTell her what she wants tâknow.â
âGet her off me first!â
âTalk!â You growled, digging your arm in further, making him gasp. When he turned a defiant look up your way, your knee âslippedâ where you straddled him and landed dangerously close to his ego once again.
âOkay, okay, goddamn!â He wheezed, collapsing fully into the ground below him, eyes fluttering shut as his face twisted in pain.Â
It was all you could do to repress the triumphant smirk wanting to crawl up your face, your brows arching in amusement instead.
âSheâs back at our camp. âLeast thatâs where we left her. Donât know how sheâd move much after what boss did, though.â He looked back up at you again, everything about his expression amused, and nothing seemed to dull it, even as you pressed your arm harder into his throat, only causing his words to take on a sinister hiss. âHe stuck her good. You think this little knife is somethinâ, you should see the one he used on-â his words trailed off on a gurgled chuckle as you continued to lean into him.
âHey,â Joelâs calm voice near your ear made you pause, staring down at the creep. âWe need him alive, darlinâ. Stop.â A warm strong hand gripping your upper arm firmly made you lift off the man just slightly, glaring down at him as he sucked in a breath and started coughing, grinning up at you triumphantly. He hissed with a wince when you yanked out the knife, bringing the hand close to his chest to hold it tight with his other, and wrapped it haphazardly with the flannel Will had shoved in his mouth to stop the bleeding.Â
âYou Jacksonerâs are all the same,â he shook his head in amusement. âBleeding hearts, all of ya!â He grinned up at the group in the most sinister way youâd ever seen. âAnd that is why youâre all gonna burn.â
At that, Joel was yanking you off the raider and pulling him up to a seated position with both hands twisted into his jacket, getting right into his face with the most menacing voice youâd heard yet. âWhat did you just say?â
The man just smiled a tight lipped smile, eyebrows shooting up before he used his good hand to pantomime locking his mouth and tossing away the key.
âThey had a bunch of dead guns. No ammunition. How in the hell were they planning to do something to Jackson?â You mused offhandedly, mostly talking to yourself.
âGuns ainât the only way to make somebody bleed,â the freak singsonged, looking at you gleefully.
You glared at him. âI liked you better out cold.â
He guffawed. âI liked you better up closeâŚ.â
Joel gave the man a forceful shake by the front of his shirt still in his grip. âWhatâd I say?â The man rolled his head back to Joel with a bored look, his lips twitching up just slightly. âYâeither start talkinâ âbout somethinâ important I want tâhear about, or Iâll reach my hand so far down your Goddamn-â
âThis oneâs not doing well, Joel,â one of the party mentioned, checking the pulse of the other raider. âWe need to get them back to camp.â
The man in Joelâs grip slowly melted into a wide grin. âLooks like you need me now more than ever.â
Joel began to smirk, and it made the raiderâs sure grin falter. âYeah, but that can change real quick.â He shoved the man back, rising to his full height before turning back toward you and walking quickly. A hand closing around your arm once again, you followed where it led.Â
âGet them to camp. Will, get a party of four together and come with us to go get Jane. The rest of these assholes are dead, thereâs no one to keep her there anymore. She probably tried to run, and if sheâs injured, we need to spread out and cover as much ground as possible.âÂ
He stopped, looking over his shoulder when no one was moving. âLetâs go!â
When he turned to look down at you, you saw something in his eyes close to fear. âWeâll find her, Joel.â
He held your gaze as he kept moving you further away from the scene. âI know, darlinâ.â He looked forward again, walking a bit faster. âI know. Now letâs get goinâ. Sunâs gonna be settinâ real soon.â

As the two of you made your way in the direction the thug had sent you in, your mind began to wander.
âWhat if itâs the wrong direction, Joel?â
âHe said go east-â
âNo, I know.â You closed your eyes briefly as you took in a sharp breath through your nose before looking forward once again. âBut what if he lied?â
Joel sighed, looking down at his feet as he continued to walk. âDarlinâ,â he looked deep in thought but also at a loss for words at the same time. It was such an inextricably Joel thing to do, it almost pulled a smile up one side of your face.
Almost.
Glancing over his shoulder toward the small group that was following along to help, the rest staying behind with the two assholes, he then took a step closer to you, speaking in a low voice.
âHe very well mayâve.â When your eyes went wide, Joel was quick to continue on. âBut,â he smiled at your now narrowed glare. âIâve been patrolling these hills for a few years, now. Never out this far, mind you, but I know the general area. Thereâs a stream that runs not far from here. Anyone with any brains would camp near it. I know the worlds gone tâshit, but I refuse to believe we as a species have fallen that far that fast.â
His smile spread a little further at your soft chuckle.
âTouchĂŠ, Miller. TouchĂŠ.â
Grinning like a child, Joel turned back to the rest of the group, his expression turning stony in an instant. âThe rest of you, fan out!â His voice was a low hiss. âKeep quiet and keep aware. These trees are dense from here on out to the creek. Keep a lookout. Iâm not responsible for your own stupidity.â
Good-natured eye rolls went around as the few people spread into the trees starting to populate the clearing youâd been passing through.
Joel grabbed your arm when you went to take a step forward. âNot you.â He shook his head gently when you looked up at him. âYouâre coming with me.â
âIâll stay within sight,â you argued, pulling your arm from his grip. âIâm not a child, Joel.â
âNo, you donât-â
âI can take care of myself.â Taking a few steps forward into the tree line, you looked for any signs of life, but before you could get far, Joelâs voice was at your ear again.Â
âDonât-â
He yanked you back into him, making you stumble into his chest. Lifting your head up to glare at him, you came nearly nose to nose as he looked down at you and you looked up at him. Your breath stopped, catching in your chest as your eyes scanned his face.
âTripwire,â he mumbled, his eyes firmly watching your lips as they moved soundlessly in shock.
âThanks,â you finally managed, closing your mouth and clearing your throat.
Joel nodded.
You went to take a step back, looking over your shoulder towards the trap, but his grip on your upper arm wouldnât let you move.Â
Turning back to look at him in question, your curious expression melted when you found him even closer than before, his eyes cast down as his nose lightly bumped the side of yours.
The distance continued to close, only a breath left between you when a faint scuffle then a thud was heard, making you both pull apart like lightning.
Turning, the two of you saw Will suspended upside down by his ankle from a nearby tree.
âCareful. Tripwire,â you grinned.
Will smirked sardonically, arms coming to cross over his chest after batting away his flannel outer layer that hung in his face since he was inverted - heâd dug out a spare from his bag after using his original to shove into the mouth of the crazy raider. âWe found a blood trail.â
The smile fell off your face as your gut sank. âThatâs-â
âA good thing,â Will cut you off. âMeans she was moving. She was alive.â After a loaded moment of shared looks, he cleared his throat. âCan someone cut me down, please? Iâm getting woozy.â

You only encountered a few stragglers at the camp, Joel earning some bloody knuckles and you a black eye, but the remaining members of the bandit group lay in lifeless heaps at the feet of your group when it was all said and done. There was no chance for prisoners, they werenât going to be taken alive.Â
Which meant that one idiot back at the camp whoâd tried to kill you had to stay alive if you wanted any answers.
The thought of that made you start to hyperventilate.Â
Which wasnât like you.
You took everything in stride, this new world required it, but suddenly you felt his arm around your neck again, and you began to claw at the phantom limb, gasping for air as tears began to stream silently down your face.
You couldnât look anywhere without seeing a body, violence, bloodshedâŚ.
Canât breatheâŚ.
Everything blurred by as you faintly registered your feet moving you forward, a warm hand around your forearm pulling you gently along before the firm press of tree bark met your back with a gentle thump.
The soft trace of rough, callused fingers making their way past your cheeks to rest behind your ears drew a shiver from your bones. âIâve got you. Youâre okay. Youâre good. Itâs over. Iâm here.â Joelâs mumbled words vibrated somewhere in front of you, desperately grasping at you to give you something to hold onto. Cradling your face in his hands, Joel stood toe to toe with you. He took a small step closer and leaned down, pressing his forehead to your own as you fought for air. âNothingâs gonna get you. I wonât let it.â
The phantom touch of that assholeâs arm around your throat still constricted your airway, threatening to make the world cave in.
Joel reached up to gently grab your hands still frantically clawing at your throat, placing them on either side of his ribcage, and you clutched onto his flannel under his jacket for dear life. The warmth from his body heat radiated into your palms and sent a wave of something down to your toes. Worrying the threadbare fabric between your fingers mindlessly, Joel seemed to notice and step even closer still, enough that a deep enough breath would close the distance.Â
Though, as you thought about it, how he still had room to maneuver any further into you was a mystery, you didnât even know it was possible. It seemed like every part of you was wrapped up in every part of him.
His voice drew your thoughts back to the present. âHey, hey. ShhhhâŚ. No more. Heâs gone.â Did his voice just crack? âItâs over.â His voice grew a little firmer, if not quieter. âItâs over.â
If only he knew, you werenât struggling to breathe because of the remnants of a panic attack anymore. No, now it was his proximity. His warm breath fanning across your face as he mumbled words of peace. The press of his skin against yours as he cradled your face so gingerly.
Time stopped, the world ceased its spinning, and suddenly all that was left was this right here between the two of you. This quiet moment, in the middle of a forest, painted in violence and hope, in fear and tenacity, inâŚ. Vibrant shades of both of you.
Will walked up around the tree quietly, clearing his throat softly. âSome of these men were dead long before we got here.â
âJane,â you smiled.Â
âThat girl sure is a spit fire,â Joel remarked with his own grin, pulling away from you just slightly, but still keeping you in his hold.
Turning to Will, you steeled your shoulders. âTake me to the blood trail.â

It took all of ten minutes of tracking to find Jane leaning against a tree with her back to you, heaving breaths as the right side of her shirt was stained crimson. The violent splotch was spreading, whatever wound obviously still angry and weeping under her white shirt, her outer layer long gone and forgotten in the chaos by now.Â
âJane?â You called out softly from several yards back. A twig snapped under foot, causing a flock of birds in the trees above to startle and take flight in a whir of wings and wind.
She whirled around, knife held out in front of her at the ready, eyes wide and wild from the adrenaline. When she realized who it was, relief washed over her features so strongly it brought tears to your eyes. She dropped the blade to the ground with a clatter and slumped the side of her shoulder against the tree with a huff.
âTook you long enough,â she breathed in amusement, turning so her back was to the tree with her head thrown back, her face toward the sky, wincing in pain.
Before you could even make a move towards her, Will was there helping her back to her feet, scooping her up bridal style and carrying her back towards camp, her head on his shoulder as she went limp, finally able to rest.
Will glanced back when no one else moved. âCome on!â He whisper shouted. âShe needs help as soon as possible, or Iâm going to-â He caught himself. âWeâre going to lose her.â
As the group moved in unison behind a speedwalking Will, you glanced up at Joel in amusement. âDo you think he knows?â
Joel shook his head with a grin. âEveryone else does, so no, probably not.â
You chuckled, despite the situation. It was probably the relief that she was alive finally catching up with you. âThat girlâs got his number.â
Huffing a laugh, Joel looked at the back of Willâs head as he rapidly disappeared at the front of the group. âWrapped around her little finger like those little things she uses to protect herself when she sews back at her shop. Oh, whatâre they called?â
You stared at him for a long moment before quietly suggesting in hesitation, âThimbles?â
Joel slapped his thigh before pointing at you with a renewed grin. âThatâs the one!â
With a shake of your head, you turned back to face forward and head up toward the front with your friends. âEllie was right. Youâre losing it, old man.â
âAinât old,â he grumbled, his face instantly turning sour. âJusâ âxperienced.â
âThen you should know all the words, Joel.â You smirked. âNo excuses.â
âI do know all the words,â he groused. âThatâs the problem. I know too much, my brain canât keep up.â
You turned to face him, walking backwards. âSure. Thatâs the problem.â
âI know things,â he shot back, echoing your words from earlier, his head tilted back to look down his nose at you in a mirror image as he continued to mock your earlier statement. âLots of stuff.â
âOh, I see,â your tone was condescending, but playful as you mimicked him right back. âStuff.â
âAnd things.â He was trying so hard not to smile.
You were not, letting the grin spread broadly across your face. âOh, we mustn't forget the thingsâŚ.â
âYeah, okay.â Joel looked to the side to try and hide his amused grin. âFuck you, darlinâ.â
âI mean, if youâre offerinââŚ.â
His head snapped back to look at you in surprise as you threw his words right back at him yet again. Joel opened his mouth to refute, but you cut him off with a grin.Â
âIâm going to go make sure he doesnât promise her his house or something. Boy would give her half of Jackson if he could.â
âHe can have your half, you jackass,â Joel grumbled playfully as you turned back to face the front of the group. âMine ainât for sale. Donât care how pretty you are.â
You glanced over your shoulder, fluttering your lashes ridiculously. âYou think Iâm pretty?â
âI meant her,â Joel gestured to your friends with his rifle still loosely gripped in his hands, strap slung over his shoulders, at the ready just in case, like always. âAinât nothinâ pretty âbout what you just said.â
âI only spoke the truth.â
âYouâre only makinâ it worse.â

The sun was setting by the time Joel was able to pry you away from Jane. You hadnât wanted to leave her side as Will took it upon himself to treat and dress her wound.Â
You held her hand as she grunted in pain while he disinfected the area with a bottle of alcohol someone had brought, then stitched it up. Luckily the blade had missed anything vital, and hadnât been rusty, thank goodness.
So far this whole trip had been getting by by the skin of your teeth, and that didnât bode well with you.Â
Once she fell asleep, Joel coaxed you over to a clearing not too far away for a breath. A bucket full of water from the nearby stream had been brought to wash the blood off your hands.
Staring down at the water as it turned pink under your touch, tinged with the blood of your friend, you looked up when a shadow crossed over the little bit of sunlight left in the day.
Joel stood just in front of the dying light, backlit and a silhouette as he extended aâŚ. rock? to you.
âThat creek is fed from the mountains. Snow melt. Coldest thing around. Best alternative to ice weâve got right now.â You narrowed your brows at him, making him sigh in frustration. âFor your eye,â he said as if it were obvious.Â
âOh,â you said dumbly and took it, lightly resting it against your left eyebrow where you felt the worst of the black eye forming. The cool, smooth stone instantly offered some relief for an ache you hadnât even realized you had, making you groan softly, and shut your eyes with a grateful sigh. âThank you.â
He nodded. âMmm-hmm.â The side of his mouth twitched up as he lowered himself to the ground beside you with a quiet groan. âTâainât nothinâ.â
Pulling the stone away to examine it for a moment, you arched a brow when Joel slowly pressed it back to your head. âDonât work if you donât keep it there, darlinâ.â
âReally?â You said as sarcastically as you could muster.
âHuh-uh,â he confirmed with a gentle shake of his head, keeping the stone pressed firmly to your skin. âItâs not a comfort by osmosis thing.â
âNo healing by proxy?â You groused, despite the smile working its way up your face, your one good eye squinting from the held back laughter you were just managing to reign in as you looked up at him.
The corner of his mouth lifted so high a dimple creased his cheek. âNow wouldnât that be somethinâ,â he mused softly.Â
The two of you sat in comfortable quiet for a long moment, his hand still holding the rock to your head gently until you finally decided it was time to break the silence.
âSo whatâs the plan from here, Mr. partially-in-charge-of-security?â
Joelâs hand fell from you with a sigh as he shook his head slightly in disbelief, his gaze turned forward as if he couldnât even bear to look at you after an attempt at a joke that bad. âIâve been goinâ over it in my head since we left their camp-â
âThat mustâve been painful,â you muttered, grinning innocently when he cut his eyes over to you.
They shut briefly with another loaded sigh before they fluttered open and he turned to look at the forest on his right while he continued. âBest I can come up with-â he held a finger up in front of your face without a glance back your way. âI donât wanna hear it.â
You stared at his finger inches from your nose. âI wasnât-â You totally were.Â
The finger began to wag as his head rolled back to level you with a look. âNow, we both know thatâs a lie, darlinâ.â You shrank under his continued stare and he went on. âBest I can think of is to send the majority back home since weâre still so close to Jackson. Have them protect Jane and those two raiders we got to interrogate.â His arms were propped up on his bent knees, and his fist clenched at the mention of the thugs.
After he stared off vacantly for a moment, he brought his gaze back onto you. âThat means the cart is going to have to go back with them, though. Janeâs in no condition to walk, and you did a number on asshole number one.â He chuckled.Â
âDonât even worry about the cart,â you waved him off. âJane is more important. What about asshole number two?â Rubbing your throat absently with the hand not holding the rock to your head, you stared into the trees straight ahead before you realized what you were doing and lowered your hand, turning your gaze back to Joel. âHe can still walk just fine.â You tilted your head in thought for a moment. âMay be a little bit more of a waddle, butâŚ.â
Joel chuckled darkly, hanging his head as his shoulders shook with the laughter. Finally he looked up at you through his lashes, a conniving expression twinkling in his eyes. âLet the little ugly duckling waddle back, then.â
âHow will we be sure he doesnât waddle off?â
âIâve been known to tie a knot or two in my day.â
As the novelty of the whole situation wore off, you turned to face Joel a bit more fully, letting the hand that held the rock fall from its spot against your face to rest in your lap, ignoring Joelâs scowl in protest.Â
âYou said most of the group. Joel, we should all go back. Safety in numbers. Making sure everyone is safe is more important than my paint-âÂ
âSafety in numbers. Exactly. Thatâs why mostâfâem are goinâ back. We only need a few tâdo this run. It also made us a target beinâ such a big group. The council made a shit decision âbout that. Thereâs a reason patrolsâre only two people.â He looked out at the woods again. âIt was temptinâ to leave it just the twoâf us as originally planned, but, after yesterday, even you could see the perksâf havinâ a few extra people should somethinâ happen.â
âQuality not quantity.â
Joel bobbed his head, his eyes shining proudly as you understood. ââxactly.â
Something wasnât sitting right. âBut what about the threats, Joel? They said somethinâ about Jackson was gonna burnâŚ.â
âPeople say all kinds oâshit when youâve got a pocket knife in one hand nâyour knee pinninâ their crotch to the dirt.â
You let out a snort, unable to contain your laughter at his blunt explanation. âCanât say youâre wrong there.â
Joel leaned back with a contented sigh, propping his arm up on his bent leg. âIâm never wrong.â
You let out another snort of laughter, more bubbling up and out when he shot you a glare.Â
Xxx
That night, just as the sun began to set, Joel slammed the back tailgate of the cart shut after helping Jane up into it.
âYou good?â He asked quietly, his voice soft and kind.
âIâll be fine. Thank you, Joel.â Jane reached out a hand to rest on his shoulder.Â
âNot worried âbout you, sweetheart,â he mumbled, his eyes darting over to the wounded raider sitting as far from him as he could get in the front corner of the cart. The bandit cowered under his stare but stayed silent. âWas more worried âbout him.â Joel looked at Jane pointedly as he explained, his head tilted forward while he looked at her through his lashes and arched brows.
âLike I said,â Jane spoke firmly, her voice low and even as she turned to look at the asshole, making him cower even further. âIâll be fine.â
âWhaddabout me?â The second bandit who had tried to choke you said loudly and amusedly from where he stood behind the cart a few feet away from Joel, his hands bound by one end of rope and the other end tied to the back of the cart. âDo I get a send off from tall, dark and brooding?â
Joel turned to him without even fully looking at the man, cocking his rifle as he spoke on a tired sigh. âThat can be arranged.â
The raider guffawed as he stumbled back a few steps, Joel striding forward the ground he lost, while you stepped in between, hands extended.
âStop. Thereâs no time for this.â Turning to face Joel, you lowered your arms. âJoel, let the little shit leave.â
The raiderâs voice rose behind you like a forgotten tendril of smoke, thin and pungent, just enough to remind you it was there. âAinât nothinâ little âbout me, darlinâ.â
Without a second thought, you whirled around and clocked the thug in the eye, making him stumble back further, the rope stretching to its limit and yanking him forward to his knees.
âExcept your brain, apparently.â You shook out your hand to your side, the impact from the punch leaving a searing sting across your knuckles. âYou donât get to call me that.â
âWhat do I get to call you then?â The man sneered, bringing his bound hands up to swipe at his face.
You took a step closer, smirking, and enjoyed how the amused sparkle in his eyes faltered slightly at the sight. âWhatever you say when youâre begging for your life, tough guy.â
The man swallowed nervously, despite his narrowed eyes of contempt. âI donât beg for anything. From anyone. âspecially not you.â
You let your eyes travel up and down the length of him slowly in an unnerving appraisal. âWeâll just see about that. Wonât we, Joel?â
âLookinâ forward tâhearinâ just how loudly he wonât begâŚ.â Joel mused behind you.
âFuck. You,â the man hissed.
âNo. Thanks,â you sneered back.
Will pulled your attention away as he stepped up on the wheel of the cart to lean in beside Jane, his weight making the whole thing squeak under the pressure. âAre you sure you donât need me to come with you to keep this asshole in line?â He jerked his head toward the guy tethered at the back.
Jane smiled and patted Willâs cheek lightly. âI think Iâll be just fine. Like I told Joel.â Her eyes flicked between the two of them. Her voice sickly sweet. âNow if you two donât stop coddling me, one of you is going to be injured and sitting beside me on this trip back to Jackson. So shut,â she looked at Will, âyour,â Joel, âpiehole.â She looked at you.
You raised your hands in surrender. âMe? â They turned out in question. âWhat did I do?!â
She shrugged, her head tilting just slightly. âIt was preemptive.â Leaning towards Will again, she kissed him on the cheek, smiling when he began to sputter and turn six shades of red. âStay with Joel. He needs you here more than heâll admit.â
âI heard that,â Joel grumbled, walking past the end of the cart as he began to check in with the rest of the group.
âGood. You were meant to,â Jane grinned, lurching slightly as the cart began to move forward, Will jumping from the wheel before it could turn fully.
As the bandit walked past Will, he turned to him with a sadistic grin. âDonât I get a goodbye kiss, handsome?â
âSure,â Will said with a disarming smile, making the other man stumble for a moment. The next he was stumbling further after Will sucker punched him in the mouth. âHow was that? Was it good for you, too?â
The raider in the cart was looking on wide eyed, but you caught him grinning slightly at the exchange, looking away quickly to try and hide it when Will glanced his way.
Jane was laughing as the cart began to disappear into the sunset. Her head thrown back, eyes closed, hand over her stomach type laughter. âDonât make me laugh! It hurts!â
Will gave a dopey grin as he watched them disappear into the dying light, Jane and the bandit tied to the back of the cart bickering back and forth about nonsense that you couldnât quite make out at this distance, but you could tell she wasnât taking any shit.
âSheâll be okay.â You walked up to Will, putting a hand on his shoulder.
âYeah, I know.â He was distant, his mind a million miles off. âI know.â

"The Bad Batch" Series Review
Now that this show is over and I've had some time to think about it, I'll give my overall thoughts, its strengths, weaknesses, and how it compares to other two main popular animated shows. In general, TBB is a solid show with fun characters, beautiful animation/music, and moments of truly peak Star Wars. Is it perfect? Definitely not, but I love it all the same. It's probably a solid 8/10 for me. In many ways, TBB is the type of show I absolutely love. It's dark, character driven, and touches on mature themes. I love seeing how different characters came to terms with Order 66 and the birth of the Empire. At a time when hope seemed at its bleakest, seeing characters try and find it again is very compelling.
Tbh, I think one of the reasons why I love this show so much is because it really hits home for me. A lot of the themes and ideas that are explored by the characters are also things I've been exploring at the same time. TBB has been a comfort show for me as the world becomes even scarier and I grow as a person. It was the show I needed right now. Also, the Batch remind me of my own friend group. So, I might be a bit biased here.
In comparison to the other shows, I think I love TBB about the same as much as the others. Some days, I'll prefer TBB, other days, I might prefer Rebels or CW. Each show has something I truly love and something that frustrates me. For example, Rebels has a lot of emotional moments I enjoy, but Zeb was really slept on after S2. CW had an amazing scale and scope, but some arcs were just awful. You know which one I'm talking about. TBB is the same. It really depends on the vibe though. At the end of the day though, I truly love all 3 shows and all the joy (and tears) they give me.
Alright, let's get into the nitty gritty.
Weakness:
I'll start off with the flaws just to get them out of the way. I think TBB's biggest flaws are regarding balancing the character dynamics and arcs. I understand that Omega is more or less the main character since she really changes the Batch's life, but they needed to do more. I wanted to learn more about the Batch. However, sometimes it felt like characters could only grow when Omega was with them. Granted, this wasn't the case 100% of the time. Crosshair is the most notable example of this and I loved Tech's interactions with Romar and Phee. Unfortunately, it does affect the characters if they only get characterization with one character. Echo is the biggest victim of this imo. They had a goldmine to explore how he felt in the aftermath of Skako Minor, but they didn't. Crosshair wound up being the Batcher who would've understood him most, except they only exchange two lines of dialogue together in S3. That's it. Imagine how impactful it would've been for Cross if he talked to him. Echo truly understands the horrors of being turned into a lifeless machine. It was an opportunity that was practically gift wrapped for the writers. Sadly, it did not come to pass. Overall, this show just needed more Echo.
Btw, TBB wasn't the only show with this problem. As mentioned above, Zeb didn't get much to do after S2 and I'm disappointed in that. Even Rex and Kallus also got sidelined after S3. CW's format was more forgiving with this, but certain characters like Savage became more irrelevant once more popular characters showed up. Additionally, Echo not learning about Fives was a massive missed opportunity.
Branching off of that, having Omega as the centerpiece also means that the emotional moments tend to happen with her. Now, that's not a bad thing, except it only seems to happen with her. In S1, it really felt like no one cared that Crosshair was gone. This is their brother who they've known forever. Why is Crosshair the only one who seems to be really emotional about the whole thing? Since the Batch have only ever had each other, I would've expected them to be more upset/bothered when one of their own suddenly does a 180 in personality. And again, it's not like it's not there, it is, but it really needs more. I'll be honest, I really didn't like S1 Hunter at all. The man tunnel visioned on Omega.
I'm more forgiving about the rough start since both CW and Rebels were also kinda rough. However, I think the lack of clear focus did hurt the show a bit. Rebels and CW had a greater scope: fighting in a war/revolution. TBB doesn't have this since everything just got uprooted. Had the show been a bit more focused, I think it really would've helped a lot. S2 and 3 both established what the overall focus was pretty quickly. But with S1, it seemed to jump from the inhibitor chips to whatever Omega's purpose was to Project War Mantle and I was like: so, what was the Batch's goal other than survival?
There are other things that bugged me as well. Tech's death should've been handled better. I get that the Batch are soldiers so they aren't expected to cry in each others arms. Except the closure for Tech's death wasn't enough. What wound up happening was half the fandom questioning if he was really dead and searching for hints that he was alive. I covered this in my S3 review, but to summarize: the writers needed more time and more deep character moments. TBB thrived on those deep, mature conversations.
I know I just went off, but I truly love this show with all my heart. I know it's capable of so much more as shows in its strengths. It just frustrates me when it falls short.
Strengths:
Crosshair. Looking back at his overall journey, Crosshair is easily the most compelling character. I'm linking my study of him because his arc is just that good.
https://www.tumblr.com/marvel-starwarsfangirl/750696139213471744/crosshairs-character-in-tbb-a-study?source=share
What's so impressive to me about Cross is that he doesn't need to be in a lot of episodes in order to tell his story in a satisfactory way. Everything he's in is so well written that I can easily tell how he's feeling, why he feels that way, and why he makes the choices he does. In S2, not once did I have to wonder why he decided to betray the Empire or befriend Mayday despite that arc being only 2 episodes. The subtext really said it all perfectly. TBB does such a good job with his character, but I won't go on any further because we'd be here forever. Anyways, I love Crosshair and he has the best redemption arc in Star Wars. You can't change my mind.
TBB also touches on mature themes and I love that they are explored in a thoughtful way. Tech's conversation with Omega is really beautiful. It speaks to a lot of people and I love that the writers chose to take a thoughtful route instead of just having Tech say something nerdy and calling it at that. The same thing with Crosshair's PTSD. It was a genuine issue that affected him and not just when the plot needed it. I also appreciated that he was given time to actually try healing. Letting the characters sit down and have deep moments is what really connects the audiences to them because we see what makes them vulnerable. Light-hearted action is fun and all, but there is so much more to these characters than "blaster go pew." I really resonated with Crosshair's story and I know many people did the same with Tech's. I also loved how the show showed Omega adapting to the change around her; it can be very difficult sometimes and I appreciated that it wasn't still sunshine and rainbows after. Echo had a role within the Batch and his absence definitely shook the dynamics.
The animation and music are just perfection. It speaks for itself, but it's perfect imo. (yes, I'm aware of the errors, but it doesn't impact the actual quality).
The Empire was really freaking scary. TBB did a great job showing how the Empire started encroaching on the entire galaxy and began phasing out the clones. Occupations started, Rampart began his chain code system, and any form of dissent was immediately silenced. There was no question as to how ruthless they were. And there were genuine consequences to the actions of characters. Rampart was thrown under the bus for something he was ordered to do. The Empire doesn't protect anyone except Palpatine. "The Outpost" is so brutal and raw, but it perfectly shows how the Empire can drain a person until they break. Both Rampart and Hemlock are two fantastic villains that capture the true horrors of humanity. Rampart is a cold and greedy man. We all know people like him and he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Not even humble juice in prison could make him reevaluate his views. Hemlock is a monster that only cares for his experiments. He was such a different villain compared to the Sith and greedy imperials we tend to see and I appreciated that. Even Crosshair was a good example of how misguided beliefs can turn people against one another. Like with Rampart, we all know people like Crosshair. It grounds TBB that much more.
I also loved the main focus on family in this show. It's a value that I hold dearly because of my beliefs and how I was raised. At the end of the day, the Batch's greatest strength comes from the bonds they have with each other. In times so dark, it's the people they love the most that will help them get through their struggles. I honestly love that. Whether it's friends, siblings, or parents, those bonds are so important. People aren't meant to tackle the world alone. TBB does a great job showing how hard it is when you're stuck in a dark place and how impactful it can be to have people who love and support you. Overall, I really loved it.
At the end of the day, I just really love the Batch. They mean a lot to me, especially Crosshair and Omega. Omega herself is such a sweet bean and her light truly is beautiful. I've loved watching her journey over the last several years. She's a wonderful character and I love her dearly. I love Crosshair (he's really hot, ok). I love Tech's charm and quips. I love Echo's strong drive for justice. I love Wrecker's big heart. I love Hunter's... fatherly instincts.
Ok, I know that was long, but I am so grateful for this show. I love TBB with all my heart and there's so much more to say. For now though, I'll just say that TBB has truly made an impact on my life. It gave me something to enjoy when times got rough and it gave me Crosshair. I will always be thankful for him.

Citadel Arc Strikes Again
Sooooo... I got to the bit of my Clone Wars rewatch that I've been procrastinating for weeks. And obviously, because the Domino Twins are involved, I have thoughts
Of course you all get dragged along as well đ
Including you @saturn-sends-hugs @inkstainedhandswithrings and @the-bi-space-ace
Straight off the bat, look at our boys!!! I get so proud of them when I see them in their ARC armour. And I wanna know how much of a say Cody and Rex got in who came along on the mission because I like the idea of them just being like "our sons are coming and we will accept no objections"
Also, why does Echo look like he's ready to deck someone? Chill, dude. It's literally still the briefing.
But something I wanna talk about is how nervous Fives seems about this entire thing. While Echo seemed to be on board with the whole reprogrammed battle droid plan, Fives was less than enthused. And he was clearly unsure about the carbon freezing thing as well. It makes me wonder if he's been on edge about the mission from when they first found out about it and whether Echo had been comforting him and telling him that it was all going to be fine.
Because nothing makes this episode more gut-wrenching than the idea of a stressed out Fives feeling like something is going to go wrong and Echo telling him that everything is going to be okay. đ
I don't know what happened to these guys during ARC training but Fives has become the one that's all "are we sure this is a good idea?" and Echo's in the briefing room like
And then we have "They're not about to let one of their own be tortured in the handing over of information that will help The Separatists win the war"
Oh the irony
OH THE FUCKING IRONY
How does this show get more depressing with every rewatch? You think you're prepared but haha NOPE
Of course I have to mention Fives handling carbon sickness like an absolute champ đ¤
This pic is also an accurate representation of my mental state after watching this arc
And I'm not sure why this following pic makes my heart melt so much but it just does.
I think it's because we never got much of these three in action together and just seeing them all in a shot like this just makes me think about how far the Domino Twins have come. Rex found these two when they were shinies and now they're all working together with Echo and fives as ARC troopers. They grow up so fast (literally). đĽ˛
Edit: Looking back at that pic for a second... are there two Echos? That's not Fives in the back. That's Echo's helmet design. And I'm not convinced that the pouches on the chest plates are on the opposite sides like they should be. Rex is talking to two Echos???
Next episode! Oh boy...
Every other clone death aside for a moment, this show really just glossed over the whole "a clone getting cut in half by a door" thing.
The idea of these three being stuck between two sealed doors with half of their brother is horrifying. And the show just moves on like this didn't happen. THEY JUST WATCHED ONE OF THEIR OWN BROTHERS BE CUT IN HALF BY A DOOR WTF
What a happy kids show đ
And unfortunately it doesn't get much happier.
But I do want to talk about design for a moment because I feel like we don't talk about the clone helmets enough, especially when it comes to things like this shot.
Animating emotion well is hard. Animating emotion well when you can't see your character's face is harder. But what I love is that because of the fact that the top of the visor is just a straight line, you can change the emotion being shown by simply having the character tilt their head.
The first shot clearly shows Echo realising what he needs to do and the next is this very strong look of determination. Just a split second apart, with no change but the tilt of the head, and the emotion changes. It's so cool and I feel like it doesn't get praised enough.
A three-part tragedy:
I think what makes this so heartbreaking is not just the fact that Fives has now lost his closest brother, and the last remaining member of his squad besides himself, but also the fact that it's so sudden. It so quickly went from Echo and Fives to just Fives.
And this is going to be gutting for Rex and Cody as well. They found the Domino Twins as shinies, they would have watched them settle into the 501st, they watched them grow up, were the ones to promote them ARC troopers and were just so freaking proud of these two.
And they not only lost one of them, but they watched this pair of clones, who have been stuck together like glue from the beginning, be torn apart. They didn't just see Echo go, they saw Fives lose Echo as well and that's heartbreaking.
None of them have time to process it either. They have to get out of there and leave Echo behind.
This scene where Fives warns them about the hounds approaching hurt as well because he just sounds so... hollow. He sounds like a man whose lost all hope, and I don't blame him. There's an emptiness now.
Rant Incoming
THESE POOR CLONES. THESE POOR FUCKING CLONES WHO HAVE JUST WATCHED THEIR BROTHERS DIE AND COULD DO NOTHING BUT LEAVE THEM BEHIND ARE NOW HAVING TO PARTICIPATE IN A JEDI FUNERAL DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY HAD NO OPPORTUNITY TO HONOUR THEIR FALLEN BROTHERS!!!
I'm not saying that Piell doesn't deserve to be honoured and have his body burned (side note: it's really convenient that there was lava everywhere for the whole burning the body thing) but this feels like such a kick in the teeth for the clones.
Also I just want Five's internal monologue here because he literally just watched his closest brother die trying to protect a Jedi who is now also dead. The important info still got back to the Jedi council but Echo gave his life to protect a man who didn't even make it off the planet.
ALSO THEY WATCHED ONE OF THEIR BROTHERS BE CUT IN HALF EARLIER WHY ARE WE IGNORING THE FACT THAT THAT WAS A THING???
Ngl I think I would rather just die than crawl across a wire like this
Despite being depressing as all hell, I do really like these episodes. I love something with actual tangible stakes and having points where they feel comfortable killing off important or well-loved characters is something I appreciate and respect (even if it just leads to endless despair about the Domino Twins).
It's a shame that Echo never gets mentioned between here and the final season because I would love to have explored Fives' response to his loss more. I do like how they handle it in these episodes though. It feels like there is at least some recognition of how Fives would be struggling with all this and it doesn't just have him trotting around like nothing happened.
Fives seemed so nervous for this mission and it's devastating to know how tragic it would be for him and Echo. They didn't go into this knowing that it would be the last time they ever saw each other, but it all got ripped away in an instant and there was nothing they could do about it.
And I think I'm just going to end it on this screenshot because I feel like it just sums it all up.
#this has no cohesion#it's literally just ramblings#but I can't be bothered to turn this into a well-structured essay#it's just my unfiltered thoughts#was putting off these episodes for a while#because I didn't want to get to the last point where the domino twins were ever together#but I pushed myself through it#time to procrastinate getting to the umbara arc instead :D#ALSO A POOR CLONE GOT CUT IN HALF BY A DOOR#the clone wars#star wars#the domino twins#echo and fives#echo#arc trooper echo#fives#arc trooper fives#captain rex#commander cody

Delivery
Summary: While on the famous Nerf Nugget delivery for Cid, Hunter and Echo clash over their philosophies and future plans.
Word Count: 1,323
Read on AO3
***
âWas that the last crate?â Echo asked as Hunter made his way up the step of the marauder.
âUhuh,â Hunter replied, tossing the case of credits at him in the pilot seat.
âWhatâs our cut?â Echo asked.
âNot enough,â Hunter grumbled.
Delivering nerf nuggets wasnât exactly the best use of his expertise he thought as he sank into the co-pilot seat.
âIâm not sure why Cid only sent the two of us on this mission.â Echo said, flicking a few switches above him and making the Marauder roar to life.
âItâs a delivery, Echo, not a mission. It didnât require the whole team.â
âMaybe sheâs got something else in mind for the others that she didnât share,â Echo said pointedly.
Hunter paused and sighed, âI wouldnât put it past her. The sooner we get going to sooner we get back and see what theyâve been up to.â
âWell, letâs hope she doesnât try to sell any of them.â Echo said, eyebrow raised.
Hunter rolled his eyes and chuckled, âI did apologize for that multiple times.â
Echo laughed as he guided the ship through the dark grey clouds, âI know. Maybe next time weâll sell you.â
Hunter laughed. âIâm not sure Iâd make a very good droid,â he said, taking a bite out of a ration stick and putting his foot up on the console.
âYou ever think of going into the entertainment business? There are a couple of Twiâlekâs at Cids who I know would pay for your company,â
âECHO!â Hunter threw his half-eaten ration bar at his brother. Echoâs Arc trooper training came in handy as he ducked out of the way and shoved Hunterâs shoulder, grinning from ear to ear.
As they cleared the atmosphere Echo pulled the lever sending them into the hypnotic blue swirls of hyperspace. Hunter watched his brother relax in the pilot seat and tear the top off his own ration bar. He sniffed it wearily before taking a hesitant bite. Â Hunter smiled, Echo did this every time he ate.
âItâs probably time to cut ties with Cid.â he said, his mouth full and muffled.
âI know,â Hunter said, running his hand though his hair. âBut then what do we do? We need credits, clothes, food, fuelâŚâ
âWe could get in touch with Rex. Join his networkâŚâ Echo said. The blue light of hyperspace bouncing off the metal parts inserted into his skull.
He mentioned it casually, like it had just come to mind but Hunter knew heâd been ruminating on it since theyâd last seen Rex on Bracca. Hunter hung his head as silence permeated the air and he thought how to respond. He wanted to be sensitive, show Echo that he understood the pull to his old squad mate. But his hesitation to speak seemed to give Echo impetus to continue.
âIf we worked with Rex we could use his support system, senators, mechanics⌠we could do something that matters.â
âKeeping us safe and together matters, Echo.â Hunter said quietly.
He felt Echoâs eyes on him and lifted his head to meet them. The Arc trooperâs intense golden gaze was impossible to turn away from and very difficult to say no to. Hunter had learned that the hard way over the last few months.
âWeâre meant for more than this, Hunter.â Echo said seriously. âYou know that.â
âYou sound like Crosshair,â Hunter said, involuntarily wincing at the mention of his lost brotherâs name.
âHeâs not right about a lot these days. But he was right about that.â Echo said gruffly.
Hunter shot him a look but again said nothing. Time as the leader of the squad had afforded him some perspective and learning to hold his tongue or wait to voice an opinion was one of the enduring lessons he took with him.
âI understand your hesitation, but weâd not be putting much more on the line than we do now.â Echo continued unabated.
âYou know why we canât do that.â Hunter said firmly.
âWhy? because of Omega?â
Hunter sighed. Of course, it was because of Omega. She should have a peaceful life, An actual childhood. Over the last few months sheâd been shot at, chased, kidnapped and almost died in a sinking city. She needed a break. He needed a break.
âSheâs a child. She deservesâŚâ Hunter looked around as though the right words would fall from the blue clouds of hyperspace, ââŚI donât know, safety, peace, a familyâŚâ
âWe tried to give her that with Cut and Suu, Hunter. She ran. She chose us, she chose this.â He gestured to the Marauder, scattered with bits of machinery, blankets, empty food wrappers and debris.
âSheâs our responsibility, Echo. We have to make the best decision for her and the rest of the squad. Even if itâs not necessarily what we want.â
Echo stood up in frustration and slammed his scomp into the durasteel siding. Hunter watched as he walked to the back of the ship, left hand on his hip, his boots clanging on the grated floor.
It was rare for Echo to lose his temper. That was one of the reasons Hunter enjoyed having him as a member of the squad. With the big personalities of Wrecker, Tech and Crosshair, when he was with them, Echo was steady and sound. He was another voice of reason that Hunter could always rely on.
The light on Echoâs metal headpiece flickered rapidly and Hunter wondered if that was a visual clue to Echoâs racing thoughts. Hunter forced himself up to continue the conversation, knowing he probably wouldnât like the outcome.
He sank into the red chair next to the communication array and swiveled. Echo knew he was there but kept his back to him for a moment longer. They had had a similar conversation on their way to Serenno, in the exact same spot.
âI understand that this isnât what you signed up for when you joined us,â Hunter said softly âIt isnât something I would have signed up for either. But this isnât a fight we can win. I donât like running anymore than you do, itâs not in my nature but some things are more important. Keeping Omega safe is more important. Keeping you all alive is more important. I canât change the fundamentals of our situation. But I understand if this isnât where you want to be anymore.â
Hunter kept his head down but looked up at Echo, like he was taming a wounded animal. Echoâs large eyes flickered left and right as though searching for the right words.
âI lost so much time on Skako. Iâm not sure how much more time Iâm willing toâŚsacrifice, when I know I could be making a difference.â Echo said.
âI respect that.â Hunter responded gently, trying to keep as much emotion out of his voice as possible. He didnât want Echo to leave. Didnât want to be responsible for the desertion of another brother. But just like Crosshair, if thatâs what he chose, who was Hunter to get in the way?
âI donât want to leave,â Echo said. The corners of Hunter mouth ticked up and he tried his best to hide it but failed, âI know your jobs not easy, keeping us together and in one piece.â Hunter nodded, thankful for the acknowledgement. âBut Iâm not going to be able to do this forever.â
âUnderstood.â Hunter said. He clapped Echo on the shoulder and started to head back to the cockpit.
âHunter?â
âHmm?â
âI canât believe Iâve never asked this before but what do you want?â
âWhat do you mean?â Hunter responded, confused.
âOut of life. What do you want?â Echo asked again, his gravely voice curious.
Hunter shrugged, âI dunno, nothing much. Settle on a remote planet somewhere. Watch Omega grow up. We could all have our own space but be close. You know, peace, I guess.â
âHmmâ said Echo with a wistful smile. âSounds nice.â
âMaybe one day,â Hunter said.

Hey guys. I know Iâve been relatively quiet on here since the finale, and I wanted to let you all know I havenât just liked all your posts but not reblogged for the sake of lurking đ
. I had an insanely chaotic week in my personal life/schedule and the finale hit me hard, in some ways that I wasnât expecting, so Iâve been processing a lot behind the scenes and trying to play catch-up.
I know thereâs a lot of opinions, a lot of hurt feelings, and a lot of processing going around, no matter what your opinions about the finale itself. And even if it had satisfied every one of us, it still is hard to say goodbye to our Bad Batch in canon media. Iâve been crying every time I see shots from those last few scenes and the epilogue đâ¤ď¸
Iâll be sharing everyoneâs thoughts and my own as I have the bandwidth this week/ongoing. I have a lot of things I want to address:
- How Tech was handled
- Project Necromancer and Omegaâs m count
- the death trooper batch and what worked and didnât work for me
- how Crosshairâs hand was handled
- my reaction to the finale, as well as the pros vs cons of how it was executed
- the pros and cons of the season overall
- potentially analyses on Hunter and Crosshair throughout their arcs
- some posts that I had been compiling before the finale that will now have a very different tone đ
𫣠(youâll know what I mean when I get there)
- final update on my Crosshair Sighs count
- additional chapters of the Be There one-shots I started at the beginning of the season. I have Hunter and Crosshairâs perspectives, and I will add in Wreckerâs, Echoâs, and Omegaâs.
- I still have an upcoming Hunter short fic and my long fic Compass Pointing North (Rex and Echo leading the clone rebellion) that will fill in all the gaps of the last two seasons and potentially more (I have so many ideas!)
In short, Iâm still here, not going anywhere, just need some time to process and get my thoughts together. For those of you grieving or feeling let down, I see you and feel the same way about certain things. For those of you ecstatic and fulfilled about certain things, I see you and feel the same way as well.
And lastlyâIâve been seeing and hearing both behind the scenes and publicly making fun of, tearing down, or vehemently shaming people for their various reactions to this finale. I have to say Iâm a bit disappointed at some of the backlash that has been happening between fans for holding differing opinions and emotions. If someone else has a different favorite character than you, a different perspective, a level of difficulty that you are not experiencingâdo not shame them for that. Do not go on anon and harass them. Donât try to tell people who are upset that they should just be happy and get over it. And donât tell people who are really satisfied with what we got that they shouldnât be expressing that or that they are inconsiderate for feeling that way.
In short, donât let the end of this show tear apart all of the good and wonderful and fun moments that weâve built together over these last three years. This fandom has been a special place and a very meaningful place for most of us, I believe, and those who are in this fandom do not deserve to be treated poorly simply for having their own perspectives. Be kind to each other. Please. I know you all are capable of it đđťâ¨â¤ď¸

***TBB FINALE SPOILERS***
"The Cavalry Has Arrived" aka MY OTP IS CANON NOW
A truly absurd amount of meta and thoughts and screaming under the cut:
Overall
⢠I...loved it????? This is the biggest plot twist of all for me. Like I've said incessantly, I've had so many issues with the writing choices for this show, and I'm so grateful the brainrot set in so I could start watching it through a fandom lens and have way more fun with it than through a media critic lens and being a hater. But like...that was actually really satisfying to me within the parameters of where the show had led to in the last four episodes??
⢠As everyone on the planet probably knows by now, I would've been much happier if this show had led to the Batch choosing to do the right thing and joining the clone resistance, and if we never get another clone series, I will continue to be unbearable and salty about the lost potential of telling that story. But after Echo left and we stopped following his story, I gave that hope up. And ofc nothing about my criticism of this season is invalidated. But given the pieces on the board, I'd pretty wholeheartedly give the finale my stamp of approval!
⢠I'm ultimately glad that this show ended on a "We don't leave our own behind" note, because that's the clone energy and general Star Wars energy I'm looking for, and they did a great job of applying that theme to every non-villain in this episode, minor and unnamed characters includedâbut it's still so darkly funny for them to have continued to push this idea even though the first season is literally about them leaving their own behind and moving on. And then Crosshair calls them out on it. And then he just...leaves himself behind. Even in their first appearance in TCW, the Batch's entire vibe is that they keep trying to convince Rex to leave his own behind lmao. I just feel like the show wanted this adage to tie everything together, but then forgot to keep applying it somewhere along the way. But hurrah for this abundant use of it!
⢠My overall biggest criticism was that even within this one episode we got back on the rescue/captured/rescue/captured treadmill. It's the biggest plot crutch of the show. It's so goofy that Omega and Echo rescued both the children and the imprisoned clones by themselves. The setup made it so that by going to rescue Omega, Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair actually put her in more danger. And because they were there, more clones died, wtf!! But I do like the narrative flipâEcho and Omega were both saved by the Batch in their introductions in this era, and here are they are being the ones to save them in return. Omega and Echo also are the characters in the main cast who deserve the rescuer plotline the most, since they have been consistently portrayed as helping those in need no matter what.
⢠Hilariously, one of the most pivotal roles that the Forest Trio plays in regards to the GFFA at large is that they were essentially Rampart's rideshare drivers, thus enabling him to be there and force Nala Se not to hesitate to destroy Project Necromancer.
Rampart and Nala Se
⢠Hemlock saying his work makes him indispensable is fantastic dialogue; it just seems like some dickish thing he would say to shit on Rampart, but it ends up giving Rampart the idea to try to leverage his work to become indispensable himself, and in saying that line, Hemlock ushers his own ruin!!! This is the kind of script work I've been begging for.
⢠Also I was so right about Rampart being like a Kallus foil! That infamous shot of him in his sad, sterile room after Bahryn is mirrored here with Rampart sitting in pretty much the same position, except his path is the opposite from Kallus's.
⢠They did an EXCELLENT job with Rampart's fate. I was worried they were neutering him these last couple eps, even if the comedy was gold, but this was very well done. Everything that happens leading up to his death makes complete sense for his character, and it accomplishes the very key plot point of destroying Tantiss. At the start of the season I couldn't figure out how and why the Batch was going to end up delaying Project Necromancer for like thirty years, so I feel validated that they pretty much don't. Very typical of this show to not have the protagonists do the heroic work, but fuck it, I like this instance.
⢠The humanizing of Nala Se in this show has always been a bit of an interesting choice given that this is feels like such a direct successor to TCW and she was so clearly a villain there. But although they don't quite redeem her, her motivations and her fate were also artfully executed here. Her conversation with Omega pretty much takes into account every Nala Se scene in this show, which is a great way to wrap her character up. And I really like the mirror of Nala Se giving Omega her datapad in the season premiere, and Omega giving Nala Se a datapad here. Both times, Nala Se is determined to set Omega free.
⢠And I'm so glad there was a follow-up to the destruction of Kamino as well! Nala Se getting a bit of revenge against one of the beings responsible for the genocide of her people and destruction of her homeworld is not something I expected at all, and I love it. And the setup of Nala Se picking up the detonator and Rampart picking up the blaster is just fantastic, because you know from just those two shots that Rampart is willing to kill to gain Palpatine's favor for himself, and Nala Se is willing to die to make sure the being she loves will be free.
Echo and Omega supremacy
⢠Give me an Echo-led rebel show where he convinces all sorts of people in the Empire and the underworld to defect/help them, please!!! He's so good at it, completing Emerie's turn so efficiently! We have to assume Rex is also good at it given his cell and that he has clone spies and even undercover agents, but every time he sees Hunter he has tried and failed to recruit him lmao. Also REX'S NAMEDROP but him not showing up surely means...we'll see a continuation of his story soon after this...right??? Also this means Howzer still lives, oh, thank god.
⢠"Because it's exactly what I would do." Strategist Echo comeback yessss!! A nice little callback to the Techno Union arc that kicked this story off as well. And HELL YEAH Omega's relationship with Echo is my favorite out of all of her connections, and I'm living for their spotlight together this ep. I'm extremely invested in found family stories not relying on nuclear family narratives, and I love that you see throughout the show that Echo doesn't "raise" Omega like a kidâhe trains her like a cadet. Like someone who he intends to be his equal, which is a nice and very appreciated contrast to others treating her like a precious sheltered baby.
⢠Their goodbye scene in "Truth and Consequences" is one of my favorites in the show, and I just adore that when Omega is upset, Echo doesn't coddle herâhe reminds her of her duty to watch over the others, giving her a purpose and a reason to stand tall. When he conveys that he was worried about her and thinking of her while she was captured, he gifts her a weapon he designed and made for her during that time, so that she won't have to be defenseless after being defenseless for so long in captivity. It's so clone trooper, and I love it and the glimpses these details give us about clone culture and how the older clones cared for the shinies and the cadets and showed their love for each other.
⢠I also liked that Omega couldn't have escaped without Tech's training, since slicing was so vital. And all her stealthy stabbing is of course reminiscent of Hunter. And finally some emotional payoff for the ongoing bit about Wrecker being afraid of heights! I'm weak for inspirational Star Wars quotes, and this show hasn't had many, but "Just stay focused on what's ahead, not what's below," is a lovely one.
Forest conversations, my beloved
⢠The Kiners scored the fuck out of this episode!!! So many clever, thoughtful reprises. This is the first reappearance of Crosshair's theme that's played on the synths since he began healing! And then it segues into a soft violin tremolo version that makes me cry, and then it intertwines with "The Sacrifice" from Tech's death, ouchhhh. I have a lot of meta I need to write out about the tracks "The Reunion" and "They Always Work It Out" and how they say so much about Hunter and Crosshair, but I can't believe how well my analysis paid off in the cues in this scene! More on that in another post.
⢠Gosh, Wrecker's injury scared the shit out of me. But I love him so much and I'm glad he got at least a little moment, even if he didn't really have a story arc here. Or you know, in the entire damn show. And I ultimately liked that the purpose of it wasn't just to freak us out but to give them a plausible disadvantage and to give Crosshair someone to fuss over the whole time and act more recklessly because of it, thus reiterating this key character trait of his.
⢠I love Crosshair being worried about Wrecker and Hunter and them being worried about Crosshair. That's the squad content I crave and have been missing!! Unfortunate that it specifically has been happening when Omega is out of the picture. Writers, I swear to you, you can do both.
⢠Can't believe it took another half season for someone to say something about Tech's death, and it was Crosshair, who wasn't even there?? Cool line and sentiment, but man, so frustrating. I like this callback to his conversation with Rampart, though. "Depends on who's giving them" and in this first act he keeps trying to give those orders himself. Thinking of Rex on Umbara: "We're not programmed. You have to learn to make your own decisions."
⢠God the forest conversations in this ep and the previous one fed me so much. Hunter saying, "And so do those clones" had me literally jumping out of my seat and cheering. Baby boy, it took you so goddamn long, but thank you for finally actually giving a shit before the conclusion of your story. And "It's what I deserve," hnghhh that's the good shit, and it hearkens back perfectly to "I belong in here." And Hunter immediately telling Crosshair hell no made me very happy. And then later Hunter saying "Crosshairâ" when he's worried Crosshair is still going to sacrifice himself, but Crosshair reassures him that he'll be right behind them... My heart! What a Crosshunt feast we got in this ep!!!
⢠Can't believe we also got so many Crosswrecker moments from the get-go and they kept coming! And my three precious little Techwrecker crumbs: the way Crosshair specifically chooses Wrecker to say the cutting remark about Tech to; the way Wrecker bows his head because that was right on target; and Wrecker being the one to watch Tech fall and to scream, "Don't do it, Tech!" in "Plan 99" yet the one to say with such conviction here, "We've always known the risks. And so did Tech." That's just so...finally accepting your beloved is gone ;_; Not really deserved by the text, which kept all but a total of like maybe one total minute of mourning off screen for some fucking reason, but.
Clone X, more like Clone Sexy
⢠There aren't nearly as many Clone X dudes as I expected?? I guess Crosshair's situation wasn't that rare after all? Or do they just run through them super quickly because Rex's team keeps taking them down?? Regardless, god, THEY ARE ALL SO SEXY. The way they animated their movements was so creepy and hot. And them not speaking was so eerie, I loved it. And then the moment that CX-2 did was so effective and terrifying!!! But remembering that those were clones in there is so, so heartbreaking.
⢠I really like that Echo really felt like both a clone trooper AND the resistance agent he is now this whole episode, and Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair actually briefly got to feel like commandos. The slick stealth and silent communication was also very sexy.
⢠MY GOD, I loved these action scenes. They were lit and choreographed so cool, they were super intense and had real consequences and close brushes with death, and the logic of the fight flow was really good, too. A character being incapacitated because they went to try to help an ally is always a wonderful driving force for action and gives it that crucial character-driven element that raises the stakes, and is great for making sure the main characters aren't too OP, and there was a ton of that here.
⢠Hunter and Wrecker getting shot by laser cannons and Hunter pushing Wrecker away from the blast made me shriek in terror AND THEN CROSSHAIR SHOOTING THE PILOT DEAD ON NO HESITATION NO ANXIETY NO TREMOR BECAUSE HOW DARE YOU HURT MY HUSBAND I'M FUCKING LIVINGGG. And then Wrecker stumbling over to Hunter and lifting the debris like he does in TCW. Boom, three pivotal character-driven action scenes in a row that divulge a key characteristic of each character! Excellently written and directed.
⢠Also I am SO SO SO HAPPY that we're getting to see this protective Crosshair come out in full force!!! This is the Crosshair who risked his life to try to save Mayday, who shouted hysterically when Hunter fell into the ice and was so desperate to get him out, who worried over Omega on Teth. I also really like this contrast with how he was about Echoâ"Echo's on it." He knows Echo will get the job done and be safe and that's despite his former prejudice against regs. He's worried about Hunter and Wrecker and that's despite previously spending time trying to hunt them down. And when he suffers consequences, it's because of him worrying about them, and that's so delicious.
⢠Finally got to hear Crosshair screaming! And Hunter was already the screamer in this show, but goddamn does he get to scream in this episode. Thank you, directors, for this whump material! My man Steward Lee never lets me down.
⢠THE WAY THAT WHEN CROSSHAIR IS TRYING TO SAVE WRECKER HE REACHES FOR A DC-17 OMG!!!! I feel so validated! And just like with Mayday, he's incapacitated afterward...
⢠God the way CX-2 waits to be tossed the vibrosword and then leans down with it while Crosshair is already incapacitated is SO brutal, like this is not a battle injury. It's straight up what Anakin fucking Skywalker does to Count Dooku just before he becomes a Sith Lord, like holy shit, dude. This scene is so cool and I've watched it 10,000 times over the past 24 hours, but also why did he do that lol, is he just supposed to be particularly cruel?? Obsessed with tormenting Crosshair for some reason?? Also, these vibroswords are exactly how I've pictured Ahsoka's being in A Future for Us :D
⢠At this point I was like, uhhh, the messaging of Crosshair struggling with this psychomatic hand tremor since the first episode of the season and then the symptom literally being taken out of his........hands sure is a Choice, especially coupled with how they've treated Echo (or you know, not). When they showed him still with the symptoms later, I was very relieved, AND THEN HUNTER LITERALLY CURES CROSSHAIR THROUGH THE POWER OF THE LOVE AND FAITH AND TRUST HE HAS FOR HIM IS THERE ANYTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD???? But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Echo is the GOAT
⢠"You were helping us, Dr. Karr?" / "I am." I love this subtle line and how Emerie acknowledges that she wasn't sure of her loyalties before but is certain now. And I love that she says such a clone trooper thing, "You have my word," and then doing the clone shoulder pat, especially in direct contrast to the natborn kids hugging Omega just before.
⢠"Hey, kids. ...And other kids." is just so fucking 501st, I can't explain it. I'm just so ecstatic that they did Echo such justice in the end, giving a nod to everything about his character, even his dorkass cadet personality. And it wasn't just so he could die, thank god!!!
⢠Like Echo even got a DARTH VADER homage??? That's his mass-murdering general (affectionate). More on this here!
⢠Also is there anything more Big Dick Energy in the world than Echo eviscerating Rampartâwho either the clones would recognize as a former vice admiral or at least see his captain rank plaqueâwith what may not be a theme this show really earned but is ABSOLUTELY a theme that Echo deserves and has shouldered for over two seasons...and then just straight up shoving him out of the way so that he can talk to his brothers???? And with his stormtrooper helmetâwhich is like Echo refusing to dirty his hands (including his new, long-awaited one) by touching Rampart oh my god??? Sexiest man alive.
⢠So the answer is no, there isn't. Fives is hollering from the afterlife. Half those clones immediately developed a crush on him in that moment. That one clone later placing a blaster in Echo's arms so gently confirmed this for me (remember the symbolism of Echo making the energy crossbow for Omega? He even gives her his borrowed blaster in this scene), but it's so sad that he died because of it, whyyy.
⢠Also I love the "Clones don't leave our brothers behind" riff on the "We don't leave our own behind" adage. It's very fitting that Hunter would put it that way because he only means his squad (+/-1), whereas Echo would see it as meaning his people.
⢠And I love how when Rampart first shoves Echo, the clone in front that Echo's been talking to prickles and makes brief eye contact with him, to be like, "Should we take him? I've got your back." I felt that girls (gender neutral) in the bathroom energy so hard.
⢠The clones helping each other out of their cells made me so emotional. And it's the same way that Hunter and Crosshair do later...
⢠Echo asking for volunteers, just like Rex did on Umbara..................
⢠I think this post is breaking and I'm still only two-thirds of the way through my rewatch, oops. And yesterday I stayed up until 8 a.m. after I put it on again after watching it for the first time... I'm so normal about this show. More tomorrow!
⢠Part 2!
