every month of 2023! 🎉
rules: link your favorite and/or most popular post from each month this year <3 (it’s totally fine to skip months!) and tag some CCs you love!
tagged by @ambivartence @dongkwan and @xiaojuun thank you beloveds 💓
I'll tag @woodziecup @lunetual @dreamaze @hwichanis and @mizugucci, but if you haven't been tagged and want to do this, consider this your tag!
I did not post nearly as much as I thought I did this year, and my gifs really got increasingly niche 😅 I'm just linking to my favorite set from each month since there are few months with only a couple posts
jan: txt sugar rush ride studio choom. these aren't the best since they were the first gifs I made in 3 months, but this is what got me giffing again, so it feels important
feb: tnx sungjun love or die. here's where the niche content starts. my other tnx sets from this month did better, but I liked this one best
march: vanner hyesung vlive. this was my busiest month as I made my way through old vanner content and vity groovy stages
april: dkb lune 24/7 compilation aka the time I made 27 lune gifs and then only posted 15 to look less insane
may: ikon jinhwan u. when will my husband return from the war 😞
june: vanner on idol league. my belovedest peak time winners ♡
july: jinhwan solo concept photos. remember when I went off with this coloring? I still can't believe how well these came out I'll never color something so well again
august: vanner gon performer ending fairy. everyone needs to perceive my wonseo it's not optional
sept: vanner hyesung performer ending fairy. I only posted 4 sets (all of vanner) this month, but even if I posted more, my cutest hamji would probs still be my fave
oct: ini masaya hana ending fairy. my one and only post for the month. this started my jpop posting, which somehow has a smaller audience than my kpop flops
nov: ini drop choreography video. despite me not discovering this song until like august, it was my second most played song of the year. this was also probably one of my most rewatched yt vids, and i do think everyone should watch it at least once
dec: jo1 takumi radiovision. I've barely posted this month, but expect more jo1 and ini gifs next week since I'm done with work for the year. it's just me and my audience of 4 against the world

Doctor Who: The Five Doctors
I rewatched this story on 25 April 2023. It's not quite forty years after I first saw a version of it in Australia during an amazing thunder storm that put static through our video recording of it. I recall the nervousness of whether or not we’d lose the picture if the electricity cut out. Anyway, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen this adventure in a few different forms. The one I watched for this was the 1999 DVD special edition… Lawks, that's 24 years old now... Anyway, 20 years of a TV show! Not many can claim such a record…
We begin with a short pre-credit grainy monochrome clip of William Hartnell from when he farewelled the first travelling companion to leave the TARDIS. That was the first real time I ever saw him as Dr Who.
We then join Turlough sketching outside. In the TARDIS, we see a brand new console and Tegan in a new outfit. The Doctor and Tegan join Turlough outside, and the Doctor suffers a twinge of cosmic angst. Meanwhile, the Doctor (Richard Hurndall) is snatched up by a weird thing; he later pairs up with Susan. Then we go to UNIT HQ where the Brigadier (retired) is looking forward to a reunion… he should be careful about what he wishes for! The Doctor (Patrick Troughton) arrives and they are both snatched up by the weird thing. The Doctor (Jon Pertwee) is driving Bessie, when he’s snatched up by the weird thing. Sarah Jane Smith pays attention to K9 issuing a warning, but ignores him when he mentions the Doctor, and the weird thing snatches her. The Doctor (Tom Baker) and Romana are punting on the Cam (a scene from Shada). The weird thing fails to snatch them.
And then we turn up on Gallifrey, looking once more like it has for each time since The Deadly Assassin. This time, the Master is invited to rescue the Doctor who has been trapped in Gallifrey’s death zone to play the game of Rassilon. It’s a rather fun framing device for an adventure bringing in so many old friends and foes together, plus a few new foes. Not all of it makes sense — and there are hilarious trips and falls — but that’s fine. So many quotable quotes! Yes, I love this story.

currents.24/2023
selections from my week in media [11-17 june 2023]
Tumblr media
[anticipating]
The SHINee comeback is so close I can taste it. The skirt suits in the teaser photos they dropped this past week killed me dead. They all look gorgeous.
[listening]
Bouncy / ATEEZ - I’m not sure what I love most about it. Hongjoong’s electric blue hair? The goat? Conga line choreo? Chipmunk effect? Mingi in that hat? Yes to all of it. (But especially the goat.)
[reading]
Heart of the River by meyari - Jiang Yanli pov MDZS elementals fix-it AU - Stayed up way too late reading, but boy was it worth it.
Horns of Light by Morlin Lorenz - A darling little graphic novel about a young cow and her quest for horns. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very sweet, with a touch of fantasy. I have the Kickstarter book, but I’ve linked the webtoon comic.
Old-Fashioned Cupcake by Sagan Sagan - The English language edition of the manga was released this week.
[watching]
Big Dragon - A quick and easy rewatch for when I couldn’t concentrate on new stuff. It was so much better the second time, without the expectations I had going into it and knowing in advance the general tone and quality I was in for. This is why I rewatch shows. They are almost always better the second time through (especially if I originally watched week to week.) I don’t know if we’ll be getting a season two, but I’d love to see the two leads do another project together.
Bokura no Shokutaku, ep 10.5 - I am a bit disappointed we didn’t get the epilogue from the manga. They followed the rest of the book so closely, that I was sure we’d get that last glimpse of the future. Other than that, I liked it as much as the rest of the show. I’m going to miss this little family.
King the Land - Lee Junho! Yoona! Together in a chaebol kdrama! I’ve been looking forward to this since it was announced last year and the first episode did not disappoint. The first ep covered a lot of groundwork, but I think it did it well. We’ve got a good sense of who Yoona’s character is (less so with Junho’s - I have so many questions) and an even better idea of the worlds that they inhabit and how they will intersect. I’m going to really enjoy watching it this summer.
Love Tractor - I’m enjoying it, despite the uneven tone. This might be another one I like better on rewatch when I can run through the episodes all at once.
Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (April in Tokyo is) - I love this show so far. My first impression is that it’s beautifully filmed and the two leads are very comfortable with each other. They’re so easy with each other, it’s a joy to watch them. And the young actors in the flashbacks are also very good. I’m excited to see where the story goes and am resisting looking up the manga it’s based on to see what I’m in for.
Step By Step - Episode 8 was a rollercoaster: a painful break-up; a delightful “not date-date”; moody sunbathing; drunken crying in a bar; and the best lightbulb moment to cap it all off.

I didn't know this when I decided that today, April 23, 2023 should be when I start my Star Wars Rebels rewatch, but turns out April 24, 2017 is when I first started watching. Off by one day. (The force is strong with me right now).
So anyway, 6 years ago today (ish) I first watched Star Wars Rebels, and got caught up fairly quickly. I watched the final season, S4, week to week as it aired, so I was able to go through that with SW: Rebels fandom on twitter at that time, which was a very enjoyable experience.
Sharing my own earliest tweets about this series below. This show grabbed me immediately. I sure was going through it.
My first reactions:
Tumblr media
It was fine, perfectly fine, all good here. Turns out I was absolutely correct about how the emotional arcs would deepen.
Tumblr media
Hahaha within one day of starting this series. There in a nutshell.
Tumblr media
Once you start...that's it. It will grab hold of you. Trust me.

G Watch: Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Watched:  12/23/2023 Format:  4K disc Viewing:  Second Director:  Adam Wingard This is the first Monsterverse movie that finally understood why people show up for a Godzilla movie.  That seems remarkable given the money spent, audience participation in prior films, etc...  This was maybe the first one not made for the edgelord 18-24 y.o. market in mind.   Way back in April of 2021, Godzilla enthusiast Stuart and I discussed the movie for the podcast.  I invite y'all to listen to that podcast at your leisure. On a rewatch, and knowing what I was getting into, it's still a fun watch.  I don't know if I'd say "this is a good movie" because it's definitely YMMV territory.  It's big and ridiculous, and, arguably, there's way too much continuity in these films and not enough "hey, a new monster for Godzilla to fight".  Like, Godzilla existed over at Toho for decades and decades just showing up from time to time, and no one was trying to worry about 10,000 years of Titan history.  Godzilla just was, and everyone had to deal with it. But when I get to see Kong slug Godzilla across the jaw while both are standing on an aircraft carrier, I almost want to stand up and salute these filmmakers for giving me the thing I did not know I needed to see in a movie, but had waited my whole life to see.   This movie seems to also be aware that by this point, you're winning over 12 year olds, but the odd seriousness with which adults were suddenly watching Marvel and DC movies in the 2010's was not going to apply here the same way.  So, let's just make it for that younger audience, make it ridiculous and fun-forward, and by that virtue, everyone else will just come along.  And I think it works better than anything we saw in prior films. There's a lot of ridiculous pseudo-science thrown around, so much that they almost choke on it from time to time, but the movie is about BIG IDEAS, so, yeah, an Astrodome that houses Kong?  Why not.  A single scientist at Monarch authorizing moving Kong and a fleet of naval ships?  Why not. What is important is that we play by 1970's comics rules, and the two heroes will fight until a bigger threat emerges, and then they'll team up.  And, wow, does that work.   The human stuff is nowhere near as tedious as the two previous films.  MBB's story is limited to her becoming a conspiracy nut and dragging her funny friend along as they team up with a grown man whose backstory is on the cutting room floor, but they all wind up neck deep in the action of the movie.  Meanwhile, Rebecca Hall is a Kong-Scientist for Monarch and is talked into taking him to test a Hollow Earth exploration theory by Alexander Skarsgaard, who is employed by the shady APEX Corp.  Hall is also shepherding an orphan from Skull Island who has taught Kong sign language.  It is a really neat idea. There are, technically, a few things that this movie does that the prior Monsterverse G movies didn't do, that Kong did do well.  1)  They show G and Kong in full daylight, fighting and otherwise.  2)  They lit the night scenes in Hong Kong in the most fun and exciting way with all that neon.  3)  They clearly used motion capture for the characters, getting quality movement surpassing Man-in-Suit, but making it feel organic.  4) They know where to place the camera.  It's not the same terrifying impact as G Minus One, but it's right for this movie (I loved the wide shots and then the inside-the-vehicle POV shots). Anyway, there's like an hour of conversation on the podcast, and I welcome you to give it a listen.     https://ift.tt/NM0WXkJ via The Signal Watch https://ift.tt/1lYMw5y December 25, 2023 at 11:06PM

Slept last night at around 11pm after me and Eddie took a shower. We sometimes have pillow talks before we sleep and he told me the sweetest things. He told me how lucky he was to have me. I asked him why and he told me that because I loved him so much. I told him it's either that or nothing. He gave me a kiss afterwards and told me how much he loved me. It was a moment that will forever stay with me, I think. He never initiates these kind of conversation but last night he did. I love this guy so much.
Woke up initially at 5.15am because Ed set his alarm at this time. He prepared for work and gave me a kiss before he left. I slept until 10am. It's so good to have a good night's rest for 2 consecutive days. Lost in today's Wordle. Took a shower and fixed the bed and left to go to Earls Court to buy myself some Safeguard White because my pimples are afraid of that shit. Ate at Leon's near the station and I can't say that I love their rice box menu. Went to Tindahang Pinoy Oriental store and bought the soap and some Cheez Whiz which I think Eddie might like and I bought some Kutchinta. I'm so happy that I got to eat some kutchinta today. Instant mood lift! Arrived at Kingston and dropped off some Kutchinta for my baby girls at work then went to the shops to buy some food containers and did some grocery shopping for my lunch tomorrow. Called mommy and Aira on the way to the shops and took a selfie with mommy because the light was on point. I miss mommy so much. I wish I could just go home and hug her. Arrived at the gym and did back, chest, abs, and a bit of cardio on the threadmill. It was raining when I tried to get home so I took the bus home.
Got home and started cooking chicken afritada, rice, and boiled some eggs for breakfast. Ate the protein pudding and made some protein shake which will serve as my dinner. Did my laundry and cleaned my room. Took a shower and now I'm playing Mobile Legends and Pokemon Unite.
Had a 2 hour phone call with Danica. She’s sharing her frustrations about life lately. I’m glad that the exchange of energies between us both, though dragging and somewhat the same every conversation, we get to lift each other up with whatever that we may be experiencing.
Gave Eddie a call and watched Demon Slayer. The episode was so good! I plan to rewatch it tomorrow night.

selections from my week in media [18-24 june 2023]
Tumblr media
Click through for kpop ramblings, underwhelming dramas, entertaining dramas, and way too many parenthetical thoughts.
[anticipating]
SHINee - It’s finally comeback week! Maybe we’ll get a performance in the suits? And I’m excited that Minho & Taemin will be on Amazing Saturday.
[listening]
Bouncy / ATEEZ - It’s an earworm at this point, but I’m not mad about it.
Pentagon - Based on this post, I made up a bunch of playlists and have been working my way through them [standouts so far: Like This, Daisy, Shine, Do or Not, and Critical Beauty]. I like them, although I will say they sound “stereotypically kpop” to my ears right now. I don’t consider this to be a bad thing, it’s just that it’s what I would have expected kpop to sound like before I actually started listening to it. For reference: the first kpop I heard was SHINee thanks to Boys Over Flowers, but BTS is who got me started listening to it. Then I figured out who SHINee were and have mostly stayed there. I tend to like groups with clear-cut ‘leader’ voices* so SHINee is exactly what I love.
But it is still early days, and I have not watched any of Pentagon’s promo content so I have very little idea who the members are or what their voices sound like (that said, there is one guy that is starting to stand out - Kino I think?). In that vein, if you are their fan please feel free to send me links (or tag me). I’ll be looking for guides to watch too, but I’m sure some are better than others.
*What I’m calling groups with one or two people whose voices are distinct enough to stand out without knowing the members (whether that person is the official ‘leader’ or not). SHINee is of course my prime example, with both Jonghyun’s and Onew’s voices clearly standing out. This isn’t a quality or value judgement, my ears are just very good at voice recognition so that’s the thing I focus in on most of the time.
TL;DR: Pentagon is great and I want to keep listening/learning until I know them better. (I wasn’t kidding about the playlists. I think I’m up to six. LOL)
[reading]
An Elegant Solution by giraffeter - MDZS fix-it - reread
[watching]
The First Responders - If I had known it ended on a cliffhanger I would have waited until season two was out (MDL says it’s coming August 2023). It was mostly okay. There was a corruption subplot that wasn’t integrated well at all and felt shoe-horned in. On the flip side, I really liked Dojin, the firefighter of the lead triad. Said triad is a great candidate for ot3-ness (which I loved), even though the show went with the tired old love triangle trope. The cases of the week were all interesting and heart-breaking by turns.
King the Land - This show is still firmly in romcom territory and honestly I’m loving it. I haven’t watched a chaebol kdrama in awhile, so the tropes aren’t old or annoying, but instead cheesy and funny.
Love Tractor - It’s still just okay. It’s a critique cliche, but the two leads feel like they are in different dramas. One is in a light and cute country mouse/city mouse romcom, the other is in a moody finding yourself YA romance. (It will surprise no one who has read anything in my #tmtrx watches drama tag which one I prefer.) The appearance of the boyfriend this week was the highlight of the episode. That final conversation was so so good. I hurt for both of them. It’s a painful truth that high school-to-college relationships rarely work out.
Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Tokyo in April is) - I think I should have waited on this one. We’re two episodes into an eight episode show of 30-minute episodes and I’m getting the slow drip feeling. The problem is that I love it so I’ll probably keep torturing myself by watching week to week.
SHINee World IV concert - Wow. SHINee is back! It was an incredible concert. They really are live vocal kings.
Step By Step - Fits neatly into my ‘delicious angst’ file. What a great episode.
W Two Worlds - Rewatched the whole series this week. I love it so much. I wish they’d made a tie-in manhwa (or at least printed a collection of the manhwa art), because I love the art style they used for it in the show. I also wish the boxed set wasn’t so ding-dang expensive because apparently it includes a director’s cut?!

Doctor Who: The King’s Demons
I rewatched this serial on 24 April 2023. It’s been quite a while since I saw it last… in fact, I have little memory of it. I know I have seen it before… Oh, that song. Oh, my.
We begin in a ye olde medieval banquet. A king is rude to his hosts and a challenge is issued. Then our heroes arrive, and the king calls them demons. There are fights, jousts, singing, and cod French accents. There’s also a plot against Magna Carta, a robot, a TARDIS disguised as an iron maiden, and an old enemy… well, it is the twentieth anniversary season and of course the Master turns up.
This serial is only two parts long, which is long enough to introduce the robot as a travelling companion — so, welcome, Kamelion, even if it doesn’t stick around too long.
