Summary: Dean is sick. Has been sick for a few days – ever since they came off their last hunt – and all looks hopelessly bleak as more blood-soaked petals clog his airways. Hanahaki disease is a deadly curse that sees flowers grow and bloom inside a person whose heart is filled with a romantic love for another, and the only way to cure it is to have that love returned to them. But Dean is adamant that this person doesn’t love him back and he refuses to speak their name.  If Castiel’s words would impact his condition he would say them loud and proud every day, but that's impossible. There is no way that Dean could be in love with a broken angel. He wishes he was the one who contracted the wretched curse just to take away Dean’s burden, he can't stand watching the man he loves wither and die right before his eyes. He will do whatever it takes to see Dean get that cure, even if it means breaking his own heart in the process.

Excerpt: One of Castiel’s downfalls of losing his grace was he now needed to rest more to help what little grace remained to revitalize quicker, but this night it wouldn’t be the hum of the circulating air or the clang of pipes that would keep Castiel from sleep. It was the hacking, retching cough that echoed down the hallway.  Dean had been coughing nonstop since he went to bed less than an hour ago. He had started in his room, the spluttering muffled behind his closed door, but he quickly moved from his room to the bathroom – which was adjacent to Castiel’s room. It had been five minutes, and that coughing hadn’t slowed, it was an intense chesty cough that sounded like it rattled every bone in his body, and after another heaving bout of it Castiel was out of bed and across the hall to see if he could help.  He knocked on the bathroom door gingerly as he pushed it open, “Dean?” The bathroom was a small space compared to the rest of the bunker and clad in an off-white tile. Three shower cubicles stood to the left and a row of three sinks sat under large rectangular mirrors to the right, which is where he found Dean. He was hunched over the middle sink, his hands gripped tightly around the porcine rim as he heaved and choked out another retching splutter.  The back of his hand wiped at his mouth as he lifted his eyes to Cas. For want of a better word, he looked awful. His skin was pasty and pale which made the heavy bags under his eyes even more prominent. His usual perfectly manicured hair was misshapen and at odd angles with dry days old product flaking from it, and those bright dazzling forest green eyes were dull and red-rimmed. “Sorry. Did I wake you?” he wheezed. Castiel shook his head as he took a single step inside the room, “I was just coming to check on you. See if I could help.” Dean opened his mouth to speak – probably to argue – but all that came out was another hacking splutter. He turned sharply back to the sink to cough violently into the bowl, like a cat trying to bring up a fur ball. Castiel hurried to his side, rubbing a soothing hand between his shoulder blades as Dean continued to choke and wheeze. He looked down and noticed tiny flecks of bright red blood splattered into the white of the bowl. No doubt due to the irritation his throat was suffering thanks to the violent coughing, but still alarming to see nonetheless.

The Rain on our Faces Read on: AO3 Ginny watched as raindrops collected into little streams, slowly flowing down the thin misty window. She had curled up in a large woolen blanket, a small rug spread out under her. Her back comfortably against the cold stone wall, she closed her eyes, listening to the dull noise of rain hitting the window. Minutes passed while she just sat there, taking in every little noise her dorm room gave off, the muffled cracks of old wooden support beams, the faint blowing of the wind as it rushed through stone and brick alike. Lavishing in the peace bestowed upon her for once, between all this suffering and chaos.

Her eyes flew open and she slowly moved her hands, clenching them tightly, feeling strong and at ease with herself. Pulling herself upright she slowly reached to grab the steaming cup of tea she had prepared for herself earlier, a well-rehearsed heating charm keeping it at the proper temperature. Bringing it up to her lips she took a long revitalizing sip, her cold lips tingling at the warmth of the cup. A sensation traveled through her body as she felt the hot liquid rekindling a burning flame inside her. She felt ready.

The cup was put back down and through newfound energy, Ginny jumped to her feet, sending the thick blanket flying off her knees in the process.

In one breath she stormed from the tower room, a clear goal in mind, as the door flew closed behind her, she had someone to find.

She rushed down the stairs and through the common room, not caring nor stopping for the many whispers and curious looks the other students threw at her. Her target clearly outlined in her mind.

Like a breezing gust of wind, she rushed through the castle, eventually leaving the old candle-lit hallways and stepping into the courtyard, the rain violently whipping at her face in greeting.

Drenched to the skin, yet not freezing, strong winds blowing back her hair, yet remaining firm in her tracks.

Ginny came to an abrupt halt, the grass so soaked water splashed under her feet, and she spotted him.

And he spotted her.

Soaring down, the broom landing on the muddy ground as he jumped off it, sprinting towards her.

And Ginny ran too.

Arms open they collided, and in deep embrace they remained, melting into each other, their clutches tight.

They spun and turned and tears fell between the pouring rain, yet not of sorrow, but of the greatest joy imaginable

No words needed as they spoke through their love, and Ginny cupped his face as she saw his heart through the eyes of shining emerald, wet black hair framing his beautiful face.

Yet no rain, no wind, and no frost remained as their lips gently touched, they were levitating, a connection stronger not to be found.

And her body glowed brightly as if drying up her wet skin, and kiss followed kiss, time slowing down, two stars in their own galaxy, drifting together. She was home, here, where she belonged, with whom she belonged, they could never be whole, not without each other.

And Ginny knew, neither fate nor eternity would keep them apart, they would be together at last.

Chapter 8: Acensionism

Sam, Ghoul, Delgado This chapter has been on my mind since I started really planning out this entire miniseries of Starfield Tales. Chapter 8: Ascensionism

Everything was uncomfortable. The air was heavy, cold, and hard to breathe. It seemed the life support functions on this side of the station were just oxygen and gravity. The only heat this room retained was whatever was left over from the deck above which, if Ghoul was right about placement, was Delgado’s private quarters. Her body ached from the beatings she had taken the past 72 hours and the one in particular Delgado gave her when they were alone. She was angry at herself for giving in so quickly but she was tired, hungry, and whether she wanted to acknowledge it or not desperate for connection. Even if that connection was only skin deep. 

Ghoul knew she wasn’t strong enough to bust out of here if she could and let herself reveal too much, but there was also something about the way he commanded a room that made her want to give him even more. His prowling nature and dominance over his Fleet was something that lit a fire inside her. The way his eyes always lingered on hers like she had answers for him only she knew. Ghoul knew she shouldn’t feel this way about him even if the way he took her body made the nerves inside her tingle with electricity. Delgado was still a mother fucker for throwing her in this hole. The ‘cell’ he referred to was more so a storage room closet and it was big enough for her to fit in it and maybe one other person without their feet touching. 

She banged her head on the wall behind her to keep herself awake. The dull pain was enough to keep her alert and conscious. She stayed up through the whole night cautious of what the Fleet would have in store for her now that she was an outed traitor. She expected Delgado was holding his meeting with his second in command and a few of his trusted captains of the Fleet preparing something extra gruesome just for her. Ghoul was still shocked she didn’t have a bullet through her head yet and was even allowed to shower before she was thrown in here. It felt unusual for Delgado to keep her alive for this long considering it’s widely known how he disposes of people for less. The heavy sigh that escaped her chest revitalized some of the memories Ghoul purposely had repressed. Images of her Constellation friends, the enemies she had killed along the way, and Sam. 

“Fucking kill me already.” She said to herself with such boredom that it made the corner of her lips curve slightly. Ghoul was starting to feel the immense weight of some of her decisions but what was done was done. She knew she had to admit to herself that a lot of those decisions were made because she could have made them with or without the influence of the Crimson Fleet. She could blame her ‘mother’ but nothing would come of that. It had been so long without anyone she was finally allowing herself to call a friend that she thought perhaps they were smart and moved on. It would be a suicide mission to come after her now. The SysDef wouldn’t bother not that she wanted them to, because fuck them too. 

Her web of complicated thoughts and feelings were interrupted by the sound of metal screeching. There was a little extra light that appeared in the room she was in and her eyes immediately squinted at the sight of it. There was a dark figure that blocked the light that shone through to the room and Ghoul wasn’t entirely sure who it was while her eyes still adjusted. 

“Look who’s awake. The Rook or should I just call you the traitor?” The raspy sounding shrill was no one other than Naeva. It was clearer now with the way she casually leaned against the door frame and how her shoulders jutted forward with importance. 

“Oh, look you found me. Here I thought you all would just forget about me down here.” Ghoul said with a snide. She was not going to act like a hurt animal even though she felt as low and a bit hopeless like one. The flash memories of her ship mates panged at the shadow of her heart. It dragged her down while simultaneously encouraging her to do something irrational and impulsive. Plus, maybe if she played Naeva’s anger right, she could get out of this fucking dump. A foolish thought but when did she ever have a rational one. 

“You still got jokes. That’s reaaaal funny coming from a dead man.” Naeva loomed over Ghoul and she seemed to enjoy the display of power she had over Ghoul in this moment. She took a few steps over to Ghoul and bent over to have their faces only half a foot apart. “I know it was you who stirred up all that trouble in the bar. You still owe me for that mess you made. Now you owe me for vouching for traitorous scum. I warned you what would happen if you fucked me over.” 

Naeva spit on Ghoul after she let out a disgruntled growl and before Ghoul could respond to her mini monologue Naeva’s foot kicked her head back. The force of the boot against Ghoul’s chin made her teeth grind with immense force and her head to ricochet off the metal wall. The spot of dull pain that was on the back of her head from keeping herself awake was now a little warm and wet. Ghoul’s vision took a moment to set right again but even if she couldn’t see exactly where Naeva was about to kick her next, she knew the woman wouldn’t be able to resist doing it again. Ignoring the shockwaves of pain pulsing throughout her skull, Ghoul used her hands that were tied up to push her off the wall with enough force to lift her body at an upward angle. The rest of the momentum was focused on pushing her legs up enough to kick the bitch back. Ghoul missed and her body was flat on the floor, her frustration building while Naeva stood for a moment laughing at her futile attempt.

“You dumb bitch. You aren’t shit when you don’t have your little knives or high off your aurora addiction.” Naeva’s fingers were soon wrapped in Ghoul’s hair, lifting her off the floor and tearing at her scalp. The amount of times someone went for Ghoul’s hair was really starting to make her lose her shit just a little more than usual. 

“Say’s the bitch that follows a man’s orders all the time.” Ghoul croaked feeling like there was blood running down her throat. She probably bit her tongue enough to make it bleed again. “You wouldn’t dare hit me like this if my arms weren’t tied behind my back and we both know it.” 

The array of insults Ghoul spat back was enough to light a flame in Naeva’s eyes and the energy was matched with her fist directly into Ghoul’s face. Another impact that sent stars into Ghoul’s vision and there wasn’t much Ghoul could do to avoid the impact with her head held in place by her own hair and Naeva’s determination to give Ghoul her taste of punishment. She was preparing herself mentally for another hit to the face but Naeva threw her down and kicked her in the abdomen. 

“Are you fucking satisfied yet? Or do you want me to moan your name too?” Ghoul coughed out hoarsely and spit a bit of blood onto the floor. She wasn’t sure if she was determined to make Naeva kill her or if it was the masochist in her that made her want to goad this woman. Her head was down on the cold floor and her knees barely held her up at all. The pain was just consistent ripples that flowed throughout her body dulling with time but still felt in every inch of her nervous system. 

“You’re just a real fucking jokester.” Naeva now bent down and grabbed one of her arms and forced Ghoul up to her feet. When Ghoul started to fall from not being able to balance on her feet immediately, she just roughly pulled her up even more, forcing her on her two feet one way or another. “You know I had real high hopes for you, Rook. You were one I was looking forward to rising in the ranks.” 

“How sweet of you.” Ghoul wheezed as she leaned against the wall by the doorway. She wasn’t ready to move yet her stomach was nauseated and her head ringed from the impacts. Her body had already started to get the unpleasant side effects of aurora withdrawal a few hours ago so all the hits she felt from this woman were magnified tenfold. 

“Yeah, shut the fuck up. You were requested by Delgado.” Naeva said with annoyance as she waited for Ghoul to get back up. Naeva led the way as Ghoul slumped behind her. The way up the stairs seemed longer than when she went down only 24 hours ago. Naeva consistently looked over her shoulder to make sure Ghoul was still following and for once she was just following. Ghoul knew she didn’t have many options left to choose from and at this point she couldn’t fathom why she was even still alive. It was one thing to have been coerced into helping the SysDef but it will be a whole other mountain entirely to assist the Crimson Fleet to evade what the UC has planned.

The final hall before the command center was dimmer than usual and it felt ominous. The two Fleet members that stood guard opened the doors as soon as Naeva was in sight and their eyes were locked onto Ghoul. Watching her as if she were going to attack them at any moment.

Ghoul walked into the low lit command center, the crimson fleet logo lit in the background and a few command consoles lit up and in use. Delgado stood in the middle of the room under the one yellow ray that fell from the ceiling as if he was about to put on a show. Naeva stopped at his right and turned back to Ghoul, the both of them staring at her with impenetrable glares.

“I see Naeva had her fair share of you.” Delgado’s voice was husky and mixed with amusement. Ghoul held her stance, arms tied behind her back, and held her glare. She wasn’t going to die looking like a coward.

“Only because I couldn’t defend myself.” Ghoul retorted with a sly smile as she looked back at Naeva with challenge. The only reason Ghoul followed her so diligently was because she didn’t have a way to try to pay her back for being her temporary punching bag.

“Shut the fuck up, traitor. You should be fucking dead but-.”

“Naeva” Delgado barked her name as a command for her to stop while she was ahead. His arms were crossed and he didn’t bother to turn Naeva’s direction. “Normally in your case, you wouldn't even be breathing right now. But you have options and you better think real carefully before you run that fucking mouth of yours. I’m not interested.”

Ghoul looked at him intently, curious or what these options could even be. She assumed dead right now or dead later but Delgado seemed to have that ambitious look in his eyes that made her want to hope there was something better.

“Are you listening? I am not going to make myself clear twice.” He demanded before proceeding with her ultimatum.

I really wanted to finish this one, I really did. Though I guess you could probably tell by how much effort I put into the gif itself. Sadly, it suffered from a shift in my writing style and focus. Mainly my realization that while I like media with more physical conflict, it's not translated super well on paper at least with my current skill set.

Things had been uneasy in Gotham, turbulence in the sea of crime and violence wasn't unheard of. 

But this... this was different. A raging typhoon had brewed underneath the filth and grime. The death of the bat revitalized the weeds of the dark seedy underbelly, growing, moulding Gotham to their twisted designs.

Rain pelted her shoulders, working into every nook and crevice it could. 

A familiar neon eyesore sears bright in the horizon, the Iceberg Lounge.

Penguin needed a visit

A deep breath as her fingers coil around her grapple hook, something so familiar, yet so foreign.

Was she ready? 

It didn't matter.

Gotham needed a protector.

Her grip tightens, almost forcing a grimace onto her face. Was she worried about living in her successor's shadow?

Surely not. 

Her movements, deft and graceful swooping through the sky, a swipe across her wrist guarantees there are no lights on in the lounge. 

Fear ripples through her as her feet collide with the skylight, her calves tighten as the glass caves underneath her boots and so does her fear.

Her eyes trace the shattered glass as it flutters like snowflakes through the cold crisp air of the iceberg lounge. 

Soft and delicate.

Her cape catches the air at her command and in that instance, she feels the tension and fear hang thick in the air like toxic smoke.

There was a bat amongst them after all.

Rain pours through the ceiling like a waterfall, melting into her tension-filled shoulders. 

They make the first move, but she's already won this chess match of flesh and steel. 

A lunge comes from one of the dissident elements within the iceberg. 

Predictable, wild and ineffective, like a Barnes opening.

As she twists her body she notices one of their friends ready a gun, a flick of the wrist and the call is answered by a Batarang. She catches the lunge with practised ease and redirects him to a more suitable target.

Exhilaration and adrenaline flood her veins like old times sake, yet she tastes something off on the horizon, gunfire echoes through the lounge.

The explosive rattle of clashing metal and wildfire sparks.

Foreboding, as it wasn't aimed at her.

Too focused on her twisting trepidation, a bad move she's forced to reconsider as she's launched over a nearby railing. 

More out of practice than she thought.

Her instincts still honed to a fine edge, her grapple hook saves her. 

A lifeline from a less than ideal landing. 

A groan escapes her lips as her legs collide awkwardly with the floor, pain ripples through her legs, a sensation she wished stayed foreign.

A dull thud echoes across from her. 

A cocky laugh escapes from its owner's lips.

"Should've stayed in retirement," probably accompanied by an annoying cocky smirk. 

Yet something calls to her, begs for her attention.

Anger and rage flare to life flowing through her like coursing red-hot lava.

A cracked flickering bat-signal with a single bloody handprint.

Perhaps the raging typhoon hidden amongst Gotham's filth and grime was her.

You pull your red hoodie over your school uniform, a small comfort against the coiling rain cresting your skin.

A comfort nonetheless.

The last good gift from your parents.

"Yo, Hoodie," Soyeon calls, offering a tenderly lit cigarette, smoke pulling from her lips.

The embers fight desperately to stay afloat in the pool of cold weather and despair.

Concrete and brickwork, your only shield against the incumbent rain. 

Though you preferred the rain over trust fund kids.

Soyeon and her gaggle of cohorts were a weird paradoxical exclusion. 

Money didn't fix screw-up parents after all.

Your hand waves her off, a path best avoided.

She rolls her eyes slightly, taking another drag. Her eyes narrow across the rooftop, a glint of mischief dances in her eyes.

A barely hidden smile.

A lioness on the hunt.

"Gotta say a rebellious streak wasn't on my bingo card."

A shrug rolls through your shoulders, trust fund babies deserved it.

Even if you were technically one now too.

Your tongue scrapes across your teeth, you preoccupy yourself with your phone. 

You just wanted to return to the cave, Nightwing was supposed to train you tonight.

Gunshots, spark crackle and bloom against you like the explosive dying embers of the stars in the night sky. They echo and ricochet through your ears like a dull alarm. 

You're almost enraptured by the scattering flecks of metal dancing like fireflies, you had the Bat's last gift to thank for that.

Your relationship had always been tumultuous, your fists bludgeoned the unjust before you, your anger vents with each collision but you know it'll never be enough.

Your fingers itch for the guns at your hip, the easy way. But your mentor deserved respect in their death, something you wished for.

You watch as the last goon crumples before you, a solid hit to the stomach. "Stay down if you know what's good for you."

The sound of shattering glass distracts you before you can earn a response. None of the family should be here.

This was your penance and your burden.

You quickly hit your stride, bounding over and across abandoned tables and stools, you weren't as smooth or as graceful as Jiu, you were used to running through your obstacles.

Another shattering noise sends worry shivering through your spine, Jiu was supposed to be in Bludhaven. Rain poured like a river as you came across the scene, a shattered rail leading into the depths of an abyss.

Voices echo and boom across the scene, and your body aches, wishing nothing more to rampage. Yet you halt in your tracks. 

"Looks like Big Boy got her," a smile blooms across the thug's features. All you can think about is lodging a bullet between his eyes. A primal urge itched at your fingers, abated only by the promise you made. "I didn't realise the original flavour was back in stock."

Anger flares through you, a beast gnawing at its tether. Your teeth grit as a deep breath soothes your lungs, water to cool the fire of rage. 

Your eyes prowled over their forms, planning your assault like links in a chain. 

Twenty goons all up, it wasn't gonna be a fair fight.

For them.

A flash bang and smoke grenade cocktail to get the party started, you're disgusted with the part of you that enjoys being a hunter. 

You dive into the fray, your armoured boots collide with flesh as you land, the sound of broken ribs is hardly a surprise.

One down.

The smoke obfuscates you and every move you make, you'd never felt closer to your mentor than in moments like this. 

An apex predator amongst sheep, you'd found it harder than any of the others to toe the line.

You fire a stray bullet, loosening one of the many gaudy chandeliers.

A whole squad is gone.

You hear the familiar bloom of bullets against your suit, the pain is nothing but a dull echo of what it should be.

Bruises instead of blood. 

Sparks instead of scars.

Minor inconveniences, as you dive into the smoke. You can almost feel their palpable fear as their friends disappear one at a time.

Nothing but echoes and whispers. 

The boom of your boots, a haunting siren of pain. Primal rage etched into every stomp, a beast you desperately fight against.

A flash of fear haunts the last man standing, his eyes linger on your holsters. 

A deep gulp.

A gun levelled to his temple, everything in your core begs for the return of the executioner.

A raging beast tempered against a cage.

Insert line here.

The cage remains strong.

Her fingers itch capriciously against the hem of her dress shirt, her father's scoldings ring still in her ears.

The only time they really shared.

Well aside, from the times she donned the mask. But that didn't count.

She chews at her tongue, cornered by Soyeon of delinquent fame.

A small drop in the bucket of ne'er do wells she's washed over. Her fist clenches at her skirt.

"Does dear daddy the commissioner know you're here?" An infuriating smirk lines her teeth, so deliciously punchable. 

Her hands were tied... figuratively of course. It'd be a simple gesture, a right hook to her smug face.

A more becoming smile.

Yet all Ryujin can offer is a weak smile as fingers lock in her hair.

"How about we do the commissioner a favour? Teach his daughter to avoid the rats in the gutter," a scowl etched into her features, her eyes haunted with a twisted sense of pleasure.

Weak without the mask, pain tickles its way through the nerves in her scalp. Her brain shifts, survival mode a must... at least for her father's sake.

She's prepared for more, a blow to the ribs or the stomach, maybe even a hook to the face.

Her eyes snap shut.

Even among the pews of her thoughts, there's a surprise when she feels a shift. With a soft... hesitant release of her scalp, her feet stumble with the sudden adjustment.

A red hoodie, a defiant grip against Soyeon's wrist.

Everything was uncomfortable. The air was heavy, cold, and hard to breathe. It seemed the life support functions on this side of the station were just oxygen and gravity. The only heat this room retained was whatever was left over from the deck above which if Ghoul was right about placement was Delgado’s private quarters. Her body ached from the beatings she had taken the past 72 hours and the one in particular Delgado gave her when they were alone. She was angry at herself for giving in so quickly but she was tired, hungry, and whether she wanted to acknowledge it or not desperate for connection. Even if that connection was only skin deep.

            Ghoul knew she wasn’t strong enough to bust out of here if she could and let herself reveal too much, but there was also something about the way he commanded a room that made her want to give him even more. His prowling nature and dominance over his Fleet was something that lit a fire inside her. The way his eyes always lingered on hers like she had answers for him only she knew. Ghoul knew she shouldn’t feel this way about him even if the way he took her body made the nerves inside her tingle with electricity. Delgado was still a mother fucker for throwing her in this hole. The ‘cell’ he referred to was more so a storage room closet and it was big enough for her to fit in it and maybe one other person without their feet touching.            

She banged her head on the wall behind her to keep herself awake. The dull pain was enough to keep her alert and conscious. She stayed up through the whole night cautious of what the Fleet would have in store for her now that she was an outed traitor. She expected Delgado was holding his meeting with his second in command and a few of his trusted captains of the Fleet preparing something extra gruesome just for her. Ghoul was still shocked she didn’t have a bullet through her head yet and was even allowed to shower before she was thrown in here. It felt unusual for Delgado to keep her alive for this long considering it’s wildly known how he disposes of people for less. The heavy sigh that escaped her chest revitalized some of the memories Ghoul purposely had repressed. Images of her Constellation friends, the enemies she had killed along the way, and Sam.
