#Revali the rito warrior

You know what I havn't heard anyone talk about yet?

The fact the Rito use what look like their own simplified version of compound bows.

So - for anyone who doesn't know archery, there's different types of bows you can use. The type you'll usually see in media is a long bow. (There's also flat bows, recurve bows, crossbows, etc.)

A compound bow is a more modern bow - and the most common type you'd probably use now days if you joined an archery club.

You can see the familiarities - the wheels, the supports, the shapes. The Rito bows are like a wooden version.

So why is it interesting? Well - they made the design choice to chose a more modern bow style rather than a more traditional one like a longbow dispite the fact the enviroments aren't modern. So this was a very specific design decision they made. Why are compound bows more commonly used now days? Because they take less strength to pull and fire. Simple as that. To shoot a long bow, you need very good upper arm strength. Compound bows distribute the pressure to make them easier to wield if you don't have that.

Birds have hollow bones so that they can fly, and the Rito warriors seem to mostly have slender builds for dexterity. The liklihood is that they don't have incredible muscle strength. So using compound bows makes perfect sense. They can also be lighter, because a long bow or a flat bow must be made of a solid piece of wood so it can bend without breaking, but a compound bow is usually made from hollow pieces of metal (though theoretically could be made from wood), because they don't have so much pressure on them. So they'd be able to be flown around with much easier.

This probably isn't of any interest to anyone, but it was something interesting I noticed that I wanted to share!

Revali stirred in his sleep, a subtle groan escaping his beak as he slowly became aware of the new day dawning. He blinked his emerald eyes, trying to chase away the remnants of sleep that clung to him. Training awaited, and he was determined not to waste a moment.

Sitting up on the side of the lavish bed in the Hylian palace, he took a moment to collect his thoughts. The soft sheets and plush mattress and grand windows were a stark contrast to the simple homes of Rito Village, but Revali had come to appreciate the comforts of their temporary home.

With a determined sigh, he pushed himself to his feet, wincing as he stretched his wings and limbs. The tension of sleep slowly loosened its grip, and he felt the grogginess dissipate. As he walked towards the mirror, a small, self-deprecating chuckle escaped him. "I used to look better in the mornings," he muttered to himself, running a hand through his mussed feathers.

His reflection revealed his somewhat disheveled appearance, but he couldn't help but smirk at his own vanity. Revali's gaze then fell to a lone string on the dresser, one of the four he used to braid back his hair. Revali deftly gathered his long hair and swiftly tied it into a ponytail, securing it with the string he had found. "That will have to do for the moment." he murmured to himself as he moved about the room.

I'd love to hear all your thoughts about rito Link. How Revali would go about courting him, how he would go about mating with him, the rituals, everything. I'm sure you have many interesting and captivate things to share!

hiii!! I didn’t forget about this ask I just wanted to properly answer it!

so I think that no matter what story iteration it is Revali would be unbelievably infatuated with Link. Rather shy but super duper obvious about his interest in him. My rito hc’s about courting rituals involve a LOT of subtle body language and gift giving. so we have Revali out here giving all the signals with his body language while Link is just : T about it. It wouldn’t be until Revali’s crush wears down a little bit and he starts focusing on his archery more that Link would start to really consider Revali’s advances.

I don’t think they’d get into allopreening until they were well into their friendship. Their crushes would wax & wane against each other. Never fully receding but not always aligning (they’re also both cowards I think when it comes to feelings. so they never confess.) When someone does finally make a move (probably Link at first) they both fumble with how to court one another. Neither of them really expected to find someone long-term and so they never really thought about ‘romance’ in that way. Revali would want to go all out but overthink it constantly. Link would probably underthink it a lot and be worried he’s not doing enough. Their first gifts for each other are violets (for Revali. his favorite flower) and nutcake. And a nice piece of jewelry and hair beads (for Link because he loves to accessorize). {he also stole one of Revali’s scarves and Revali told him to keep it but he doesn’t like saying that was his first gift because that doesn’t seem as thoughtful}.

They often like to fly together. That’s one of their favorite pastimes when they’re not both busy with village duties. In this au I don’t always like having Revali be rito champion but I do like the idea that he finds Vah Medoh’s head buried in Hebra and goes and sits with her. She’s not active but something draws him to the place. So later on in their courtship/friendship Revali takes Link there and they just sit together and watch the aurora.

the only thing against the grain that they do is they often share a hammock before they began courting and share all throughout. It’s also why over half the village knew they were a thing before they knew they were a thing. Link stays in Revali’s hut more often than his own and the two of them become inseparable.

Revali’s final proper gift to Link is a complimenting bow that’s design fits Great Eagle. So they both match <3

I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about how Revali in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a little difficult to control because he has two ways of fighting; one on the ground with some basic attacks and the other using his Gale and perform more airing attacks.

But I honestly don’t have a hard time playing as him. He’s been on the journey throughout most of the game (except for certain parts of the story) and I have fun playing as him.

Murmurs of awe and excitement sweep through the village. Not only had the blizzard lifted, but their champion had returned!

"A true miracle of the day! Forgive me my excitement, Master Revali. The fact that you have returned I feel is a cause for celebration. After all, I'm sure my son and Link would like a chance to relax a bit after such a hard fought battle." Teba reasons.

Revali nods in agreement. "Indeed. A warrior needs his rest after all." He says before he spots something on Teba's back. "Forgive me, but is that...?" He asks pointing at the bow he spotted.

"Hmm? Oh, yes. It is your bow, the Great Eagle Bow, Master Revali." Teba replies, before taking it off and holding it out. "I believe this should return to the wings of its rightful owner." He adds.

Revali slowly takes it back in wing, examining its condition. "...It's the same one too. A hundred years, yet it's been kept in a remarkable state." He muses, feeling the weight of the bow in his wing. Tulin just looks amazed and excited that Revali has his weapon in his possession once again.

Link for one is glad for the rapidly improving conditions as they travel back to the village. Despite his warm clothing and resilience that didn't mean he wasn't cold and tired of all the snow. So to see it just vanish was not only a wonder to behold but one of relief too. For now he focused upon getting back to the village with his companions.

Once they're close enough and Teba calls out in surprise the Hylian gives a small smile. He knew that the Rito would be awed and amazed that their Champion has returned to them but it also made him wonder if the other Champions were like this as well.

His attention snaps back to the present when Revali says his name and he merely smiles, as if taking on the heart of the blizzard to cleanse the temple and free the Rito had been no problem at all. Hopefully he didn't look as exhausted and sore as he felt right then as to not dampen the joyous occasion. He would be fine until later.

Here is Archery Nerd fact #3! Something that the game actually does inaccuratly, unfortunatly.

So, when you draw a bow - you should never grip the handle. You're actually supposed to let it rest in your purlicue (the skin bit between your thumb and forefinger) and keep your hand open, letting the arrow rest on your pointing finger to aim and keep it straight.

"Oh, but won't the bow just....fall out of your hand when you release the shot???" - Yes!!! It is actually supposed to do that. Many archers wear a little strap around their wrist to catch it as it falls - but if you have good reflexes, you can just grab it.

But why can't you grip the handle? Well - because the force when you release the string will cause your grip to shake, and the shot will be skewed.

Anyway - here is a super rough reference for any artists wanting to draw the bird bois shooting accuratly!

This may sound like a strange question, and I hope it doesn't actually happen, but how do you think you would react if Link showed up to Rito Village somehow having been changed into a Rito himself?

Probably shocked at first, but it’d eventually wear off if the condition isn’t life threatening or permanent.

Link would make a great Rito Warrior with the power of flight on his side. Who knows, maybe Master Revali would finally admit defeat if Link bested him as a Rito…so long as he doesn’t use the Master Sword.

All Rito are paid the same regardless of the job we do. Master Revali doesn't pay me, the Elder does. I'm interning in this position to train to some day become the Village's apointed artist.

The Warriors like to call me a coward for not being a fighter, they say my job is so easy and fun and I just get to laze around draw pictures all day.

*Tears of the Kingdom Spoilers*

Playing through the Wind Temple quest has given me even more love and respect for Revali in retrospect because now it’s confirmed that he was literally just a guy™️.

All of the other champions were direct descendants of the sages who fought in the Imprisoning War, except him. He had no special powers or magic passed down through his bloodline, he was just some guy who was good with a bow. He had to develop and perfect his own technique to help him in battle on his own, no other Rito had ever done it before.

Which makes the fact that he, without any noble blood or fancy magic, was able to fight alongside the descendants of the sages AND the Hero of Destiny AND the divine princess/descendant of Rauru and Sonia even more impressive. His outward confidence and ego makes sense when you consider that he was constantly trying to prove himself to everyone, that he was a strong warrior despite not being born with power.

It’s also really sad that in the end, Revali’s bloodline ended with him whereas the other champions at least got to die knowing that their family and loved ones would live on. The only things that serve as a reminder of his existence are the Great Eagle Bow and Revali’s Landing. Almost everyone in Zora’s domain remembers Mipha and honors her memory with an entire courtyard for her statue, Daruk has his face carved in a literal mountain, but Revali is rarely mentioned in TotK. (Urbosa doesn’t really have anything but shhh this aint about her) No one that knew him is still alive, except maybe the former chief owl guy?

That also begs the question of wtf was the Rito sage doing at the time of the Calamity, but honestly they probably were just some random person with no combat experience, given that they didn’t know they were a sage :P

tldr; Revali is the best champion no I don’t take criticism
