when a planet is in retrograde (rx), it appears to be moving/rotating backwards from our point of view on earth. it's important to note the planet is not actually moving backwards - it just looks that way because of its position in relation to earth and the sun. with that in mind, the sun and moon cannot be in retrograde.

𝒊𝒊. 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆?

when a planet is in retrograde, often it makes it harder to deal with its energy. it could cause a lot of internal conflicts that also impact connections with people throughout one's life.

having a planet in retrograde in your natal chart is not a bad thing or a bad placement - it just means one has to work a little harder to understand and harness the energy of the planet compared to ones that are direct.

technically, this post was made to read for natal retrogrades, but it can also be useful if you want to know general challeneges that can occur during transit retrogrades also!

𝒊𝒊𝒊. 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒕𝒔

𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐘

this retrograde is what's most known when people talk about retrogrades. with this planet in retrograde natally, you could find it hard to communicate with others. this could be in that you have a stutter, or you could be too harsh or too passive when addressing others (depending on the sign). you could be too impulsive in your actions, or you could overthink and inhibit yourself from taking charge in your life. i could also see people with this planet in retrograde finding it hard to write and learn new languages.

𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐒

you could find it hard to fall in love and/or to find, be in, and maintain relationships of any kind - but especially romantic ones; it could take a long time for you to start dating compared to others. this planet in retrograde can also make it hard for people to develop and sustain self-love and self-attraction. you may not see yourself as handsome or beautiful and/or others may look down on you or ignore you because of your looks. this is another planet that could make it hard to get along with people because venus is also associated with harmony overall, but the issues with beauty and love are more prominent.

𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐒

you could find it hard to bring your drive and passion to the surface. you could find it hard to be self-motivated and may prefer to take things slow throughout life and see how things pan out versus taking control. if you know the musical hamilton, you could be similar to aaron burr in waiting for things to happen to or for you versus making things happen. i could see natal mars retrograde manifesting as someone being asexual and/or having a low libido. you could have issues with bottling up anger, creating anger issues; if underdeveloped, i could see this leading to self-harm or other violent tendencies - this is not absolute

𝐉𝐔𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐄𝐑

it could be hard for you to recognize your luck and/or you may feel as if you have no luck even if you actually do. this is a "the glass is half empty" type of placement. you might have taboo beliefs, and people may make you feel as if you’re weird or wrong for them. although people may make you feel that way, your belief system may still be strong depending on your jupiter sign. there's a possibility of not being fit for tradtional higher education. you may feel like you have to create your own luck and could have trouble trusting the universe and your guides to provide for you.

𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍

you could be too harsh on yourself when it comes to having structure. you may burden yourself with responsibilities no one else is giving or expecting of you. you may put more boundaries and limitations on yourself than is naturally expected of you. i could see this placement manifesting as asceticism in some people. you might feel like people never live up to your expectations, or they always let you down, so you only trust yourself to get things done. with this placement, there's an emphasis on self-motivation and high ambition.

𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐔𝐒

it could be hard for you to express your individuality outwardly. maybe you’re too worried about how much you’ll stand out amongst others, and so you try to fit in with the majority instead of recognizing how different you can be. you may be more cautious about expressing your rebelling views. you could be more focused on individuality on a more personal level versus on a societal one. in the case of rebellion and innovation, you may feel the need to rebel against yourself and ideas you put on yourself versus ideas society puts on you.

𝐍𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐄

your dreams could be more intense and grandiose than other people's dreams are - this could be in visual dreams you get while sleeping and/or in terms of life goals. you could be deeply spiritual and in tune with your intuition; you might even be able to predict when things will happen to you, or you could get deja vu often. you could overly daydream when it comes to personal goals and ideals; you might use daydreaming and other forms of escapism as a way to constantly ignore everyday life. the idea of realism could be foreign to you.

you may go through life transformations regularly. you could change your appearance often, or explore different religions all throughout your life, or your beliefs could change drastically as you get older. you could have strong power over yourself and possibly others - even unkowingly. you could find comfort in traditionally taboo things, espeically the occult and/or horror and things of that nature. in addition to constantly going through transformations, you could have fond memories of the past and have a deep connection to the concept of nostalgia. you could constantly look to the past in order to change who you are in the present or future.

Transits or progressions in your chart causing sudden, temporary introversion.

》 Gossiping can be something that holds you back in life. Don’t ever gossip

》 Mercury rules over our speaking/communication/mind so sometimes people with this placement may have some sort of problem in these areas (ex: speech impediment, anxiety, depression, autism, adhd, etc) - I have this placement and struggle with anxiety & adhd

Venus rx

》 You are good at understanding how relationships work and the meaning of love but bad at expressing your love to others. These are the type of people who give amazing relationship advice to their friends yet still seem to struggle with their own love life

》 In general you may struggle in being affectionate to others or being vulnerable even with people that you love

》 Lots of insecurities about being attractive enough for people

》 Insecurities about being accepted. People with this placement tend to be people pleasers

》 You’re very observant and wise but struggle to show off your wisdom to others leading them to underestimate you and your intelligence

》 A downside to this placement is you won’t have an abundance of luck in this life. You won’t always be in the right place at the right time or any of that. You’ll have to work a bit harder for success or wealth

Saturn rx

》 You may have a lot of fears in general which can prevent you from coming out of your comfort zone. Often these people isolate themselves in times where their life is challenging which only makes things worse

》 You may struggle with your work ethic. You may be someone that needs a lot more than just motivation to work hard. You need lots of self discipline which you also may struggle with

》 At times you may be irresponsible

》 You may have a distant or absent father figure

Uranus rx

》 These people may be very unique but struggle to accept the unique parts of them out of fear of others not liking them

》 These people may struggle with love due to how independent they are

Natal Retrograde Exercises

When a planet is retrograde (RX) in your natal chart it typically indicates an almost "rebellion" against that energy OR struggles with the function of the planet. Some also describe it as a muted or distant energy.

For example Mercury RX may suggest in general difficulties with communication, roadblocks to education, or freely exploring ideas and intellectual curiosities. On top of that is possibly a disconnect, lack of growth, or delayed development with the placement of the planet. E.g. Mercury RX in Aries which is known for being very honest, maybe loud and extroverted, and harsh can actually be more shy, secretive, and tactful and this more boisterous or brave side of Mercury could be suppressed somehow. This suppression could come from events in one's past or life and this DOES NOT mean they won't eventually get in touch with that side of the planet. Venus RX can indicate struggles with getting close and relating to others. Venus in the 8th House typically craves very deep, passionate, and intense relationships but Venus RX in the 8th may shy away from this.

A Natal RX planet can also indicate that the planet's energy and influence is turned inward, making it more of a introspective experience. Mercury RX could actually play a major role in self-awareness in this case. Mars RX could indicate a lot of silent or hidden battles.

Exercises

Below are a few thought experiments you could consider when trying to analyze your natal RX planets.

Consider the signs that are incompatible or opposite of your placement. For example Mercury in Virgo's opposite sign is Pisces or the incompatible signs - Sagittarius and Gemini. Imagine what a Virgo Mercury might be like or feel life if they were forced to operate as the other sign. Mercury in Virgo is detail-oriented, communicative, maybe quick-witted and funny, can be brutally honest, critical, and practical. Whereas Pisces is impractical, highly sensitive, vague or indirect. Sagittarius may be blunt and honest but they can be impulsive, maybe more outgoing than a Virgo Mercury, and is all about the abstract, hypothetical, and big picture. Gemini might share a lot of traits with Virgo but they have their differences with potentially being extroverted, open-minded, and maybe more argumentative. This exercise can help visualize and understand the challenges of the retrograde with communication, intellect, and decision making. This shouldn't be confused with taking on the traits of these other signs, rather it is a thought experiment.

Practice or embrace associations with the planet itself. For example Mars is about competition, taking action, drive, and desire. If your Mars is RX consider entering a competition, taking more initiative, being more athletic, or even dare to be more impulsive. This type of exercise is especially helpful for those who may experience the RX in a more introspective way. 3. Focus on the House and Aspects to the RX planet. Let's say your Venus RX is in Scorpio - a distinct Venus that is known for its passion, depth, intensity, devotion, manipulation, possessiveness, etc. If Venus is in the 6th House which revolves around themes of practicality, the mundane, cooperation, and the more predictable or even "boring" then its expression and involvement is going to be different. That same Venus trine Mercury also indicates a greater closeness to a need for mental connections over emotional ones. Study and really focus on the house and aspects because the house describes the environment the planet is in and the aspect is like a "relationship" between planets and is a direct influence. Doing this will paint a bigger and understanding picture of that planet and can help you maybe "see" or "feel" the planet more. 4. On a more emotional level accept and work through the potential challenges of a planet RX with tools outside of astrology. For example many with Venus RX struggle to accept and express love, Mars RX has challenges with conflict, competition, ambition, or intimacy, Saturn RX can indicate a lot of heaviness within the realm of limitations, lessons learned, and maturity, etc. These challenges have many coping methods, paths to healing, and opportunities outside of astrological practices. Having an RX planet can be helpful in pinpointing a generalized struggle overall in a chart.

Mercury's retrograde in Aries, starting on April 1st and lasting over the next 24 days, coincides with the last quarter lunar phase and indeed presents an interesting energetic mix.
