Compulsory Heterosexuality
You might’ve heard the term “comphet” on socials lately. It’s the cute, shortened term for Compulsory Heterosexuality. What is Compulsory Heterosexuality? Adrienne Rich wrote about the concept in her essay “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” published in 1980. In the essay, Rich argued that heterosexuality is not natural, but instead an institution imposed on women to keep them subordinate and subservient to men in society. Comphet basically assumes that heterosexuality is the default sexual orientation of all people. Rich wrote this essay as a way of challenging the erasure of lesbianism from scholarly and feminist literature, and it’s now making a major resurgence in LGBTQ+ discourse (THANK YOU!).
More and more Queer people are realizing that comphet is actually hella applicable to their sexuality and situation. Many of us didn’t grow up with queer representation in the media, and only straight relationships were encouraged and promoted around us. Dolls were for girls, and toy trucks were for boys. “That’s just the way it is,” still echoes in our brains. Nothing was telling us that it was ok to be queer and nothing gave us permission to act on what we felt inside of us.
A narrative has been constructed in pop culture about bisexuality where it has been looked at as a joke, a “stop on the way to gay-town,” or simply a fake term used for people who can’t make up their minds. All of this also plays into the idea of comphet. Bisexual people are told that their attractions aren’t real, so many of us default to identifying as straight, then end up eventually (hopefully) coming to terms with our sexuality a bit later in life.
Bi-Imposter Syndrome
A lot of bisexuals face an internal battle because of our attraction to different genders. It’s like we have Imposter Syndrome, but the bi kind. This is when we doubt ourselves, doubt our attractions, and feel influenced by the messages we hear about bisexuality that are out in the world. When we hear negative messaging about bisexuality, it can really impact how we view ourselves! Even if it’s just a joke or an innocent stereotype (like cuffing our jeans). We can still feel like if we don’t do certain things, or act a certain way, that we aren’t actually bi.
Having a lack of representation can also make us doubt ourselves and lose trust in what our gut is saying. The media we consume, and the narratives within that content, can impact how we come to accept our sexuality — particularly when the bisexual identity is a joke or “not real.” It’s like being gaslighted by the media. We’re told that we’re just at the pitstop before we “become gay,” or we’re just “acting bi” to be shocking. Ugh.
Coming Out
Bisexuals don’t always come out. Sometimes it feels like we’re living a life shrouded in mystery. Bisexuals (particularly bisexual men) don’t come out to their family or partners because they fear they’ll be ostracized by their loved ones. If this sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone!
A lot of bisexuals in straight-passing relationships are hesitant to come out. (Hiiii!) There can be a sense that you’re not “bi-enough” that can harbour hesitation about coming out because you’ve never had a partner, or experience, with someone of your gender. Maybe you’ve been with your partner of the opposite gender for years and don’t want to come out to avoid questions or criticism. That’s totally fair! You do what’s best for YOU!
If you do decide to come out, there are so many ways that you can choose to do it. It can feel like a weight off of your shoulders, but it can also feel like you’re intruding into a space that’s not totally welcoming to your sexuality.
Biphobia
Biphobia is the belief that bisexuality is lesser than, or not-as-real as, other sexualities. People can view bisexuality as unnatural, a choice, and something to be ashamed of or looked down upon. It’s often not taken as seriously as other sexuality-based phobias, but biphobia can be just as impactful as homophobia, transphobia, or any other form of discrimination against someone in the LGBTQ+ community.
Studies have shown that bisexual people don’t come out to the people in their lives as much as lesbian and gay people do. We can hold a lot of confusion about our identity and sexuality, and there can be a lot of negative messaging around bisexuality that leads to the development of mental health struggles like anxiety, depression, and more.
Internalized Biphobia
Ok, so we talked about feeling bi-imposter syndrome. But now we’re going to talk about something that many of us don’t want to confront — internalized bi-phobia. Yes, you can be biased and phobic against yourself…and it feels awful. Like we said, as bisexuals we tend to question our sexuality more than our queer counterparts.
This is particularly prevalent in men. Men don’t have a lot of bi-representation, so many are left battling their sexuality from a perspective of legitimacy and acceptance. Are they bi? Are they gay? It seems to be more culturally acceptable for women to be bisexual, so men are sometimes left wondering if it’s even possible for them to be bi. We’re here to tell you — it is absolutely possible! It’s also possible for a trans person who defies the gender binary to be bisexual. It’s all about connecting with a label that feels right for you!
Often as bisexual people are discovering their sexuality, there’s a growing confusion about the emotions and attractions they feel. This can lead to self-esteem issues, self-hatred and other mental health issues. And these issues aren’t helped when the messaging from your family and friends isn’t supportive and loving.
From Friends and Family
Many bisexual people choose to keep their sexuality under wraps and never reallyyyy come out. You might tell some trusted people in your life, but many bisexuals aren’t known for making an announcement or a coming-out post on the ‘gram. This is because we don’t feel like facing any criticism, scepticism, or backlash from our closest friends and family.
Family and friends often overlook the attraction to people of the same gender and see bisexuality as a curiosity or a choice. Some people experience their family and friends avoiding the topic of their sexuality, or asking about relationships only with people of the opposite gender.
We just wish that our parents would support us and that our friends would accept us with no questions asked. When that doesn’t happen, it stings, it hurts — and holy crap does it suuuuck! But we see you and we’ll always be here for you! No coming out post needed!
In the LGBTQ Community
Bisexual people search for a welcome space in the queer community but are sometimes met with hostility. Bisexual men are assumed to not be ready to claim the title of being gay, and bi women are looked at as “just experimenting.” But both men and women are shamed for being in straight-passing relationships. Even though we’re part of the acronym, many bi people still feel like they’re the invisible “B” in the LGBTQ+ community.
A study in 2016 found that biphobia persists in all communities. Research has found that bisexual people are marginalized by both heterosexual people and those in the LGBTQ+ community. Oof! Some Queer people see a bi-person in a straight-passing relationship as less queer, and less legitimate, than if they were in a relationship with someone of the same sex.
The Need for BiCons (Bi-Icons) in Pop Culture
There are many stereotypes about bisexual people that are perpetuated by society. We can be seen as sexually promiscuous, rebels against lesbian and gay communities, and attention-seeking dramatics. And bisexuals are often criticized (and then fetishized) by straight men who see bisexual women as an opportunity for a threesome — as though a woman’s bisexuality is actually a way to play into the male gaze.
Bisexual men are judged by society because they are seen as only just beginning their journey to homosexuality. The male bi-identity is so overlooked, forgotten and looked down upon because of the toxic masculinity that is so prevalent in all aspects of our culture. Unfortunately, so many prominent male bisexuals have been categorized as gay — like Freddie Mercury. So, bisexual men don’t have many role models in pop culture to look up to for encouragement and direction.
The internal struggle of bisexual people could be made so much easierrrrr if pop culture and media would portray bisexuality in positive and complex ways.
Bisexuality Affirmation
If you’re struggling to accept your bisexuality, you’re not alone. Like we said, so many bisexual people struggle to accept their sexuality because of confusion, cultural messaging, internalized biphobia, and biphobia from other communities.
Accepting Your Bisexuality
If you’re still questioning then think about this…straight people don’t spend all of their time wondering if they’re straight. They don’t worry about how their relationships are perceived. So if you’re worrying about if you’re bi enough, let us be the first to tell you that YOU ARE. You’re 100% bi-enough. 100% queer enough. And you’re worthy of accepting yourself regardless of your dating history, or what anyone else might tell you.
You are worthy of owning the bisexual label if that’s what feels right to you. Bisexuality doesn’t have to mean that you’re only attracted to two genders either. You can be bi and still attracted to everyone within, and beyond, the gender spectrum. And, bisexuality is not limited to just men or women…you can be agender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, gender fluid, or any other gender expression! If the label of bisexual feels right, then that’s what matters most of all.
It can be hard to start owning and accepting your bisexuality. Saying it out loud for the first time can be a bit scary! (And if saying it out loud 10 more times is still a little scary, that’s ok too.) So take it slow at first. Only do what’s comfortable for you at this point in time.
Connecting With Others
If you want to go a step further, reach out and talk to other people in the queer community that might be open to acting as a guide as you start down the path of acceptance. And follow other bisexual people on social media! The more bisexuals you follow, the more you’ll realize that our stories are all very similar in nature. Reading their stories and seeing their journeys can help you come to accept your own.
If you want to start connecting with other queer people, check out Taimi! Taimi is the world’s largest online LGBTQ+ platform (with over 10 million users — and millions identifying as bisexual+ spectrum), featuring a social network, dating app and streaming all wrapped in one! It’s a safe and secure space to look for long-term romance, make friends, network, or just talk to someone for fun! The best part is that they’re open to everyone regardless of where they identify on the gender and sexuality spectrum. Plus, they post blog articles like this Drag Race review, this list of binge-worthy LGBTQ+ TV shows and this Dark Side of Valentine’s Day post. Taimi’s goal is to create an LGBTQ+ community where diversity, inclusion and love are the core values. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to be part of that?!
Learning More
There are also a number of books that you can begin reading to help you learn more about bisexuality and what it might look like for you! Here are some of our favourites:
– Bi America: Myths, Truths, And Struggles Of An Invisible Community by William Burleson
– The Bisexual’s Guide to the Universe: Quips, Tips, And Lists for Those Who Go Both Ways by Nicole Kristal and Mike Szymanski
– Bi Lives: Bisexual Women Tell Their Stories by Kata Orndorff
– Bi Men Coming Out Every Which Way edited by Pete Chvnay and Ron Jackson Suresha
– Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out by Loraine Hutchins and Lani Kaahumanu
Representation
Bisexual representation is becoming more and more prevalent. Apps like TikTok have bisexual content that’s basically guaranteed to land on the fyp of a questioning bi. For years, the media and entertainment industry has gotten the portrayal of bisexual people reallyyyy wrong. But it seems to be changing for the better!
It’s important to see ourselves in the characters we see on TV, read about in novels, and hear about in songs. It reminds us (and everyone else) that we’re normal! We exist! It gives us hope and encouragement that one day, we won’t have to defend our sexuality to anyone and that we can work towards acceptance.
We hope that this article was helpful! We know how difficult it can be to fully accept and love your bi-identity.
Your sexuality is valid.
You are worthy.
You’re deserving of love.

hey mesa!! looking very intently at your wip titled "rockrose and thistle". i am an amazing devil fan first and a human being second. anything you wanna share from that?
also love to see that the cursed bird au has a working title now. got anything else new from that au?
Hi Rainey!! :D
So Rockrose and Thistle is a Berniegard fic from fe3h and I know you don't go here so I will Provide Context
The Rockrose and the Thistle in question:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edelgard (red lady) and Bernadetta (purple girl). So just from the colors they're already pretty rockrose and thistle coded but the themes/lyrics of the song is important too!!
Fe3h is a game revolving around a war and it has multiple (4) routes depending on which faction the player sides with. This fic takes place where Edelgard loses ;( whump whump 🎺
As the spearhead of the war, Edie's got a lot of weight on her shoulders. Meanwhile Bernie, the local shut in, has been largely avoiding direct involvement. But as the tides take a turn for the worst, Bernie musters the resolve to stand by her emperor 😤
I really want to lean heavily on the parts in the song where it goes from "I know the kindest thing is to leave you alone" to "I know the kindest thing is to never leave you alone" ;w;
Cursed Bird AU is a pile of paper clippings and conspiracy yarn rn but I'm having fun with it XD the title "Making Noise" is inspired by Hozier's To Noise Making (Sing) as well as a double entendre referring to being vocal, disruptive, or popular. So basically perfect for Grace >;3c
To the uninformed, Cursed Bird AU is my Stray Gods wip where the Idols steadily regain power after the events of the game. Following the ending where Grace punched Athena, the goddess curses her to become a bird monster that can't speak, and therefore can't sing >:0 !!
A resurgence for Idols and insurgence from Athena means higher stakes god conflict!! This also means an expanded cast and one of the developments I like so far is the new Artemis. Name pending but she's blind!! Which I think will make her interactions with Medusa interesting, and also Laelaps will be more than happy to be a guide dog uwu 🦮
The real question is: do you trust her with a bow 🤨
Ask game in question btw

Been horribly depressed lately, my new combination of meds just don’t work as well, but they’ll also make me stop gaining weight, so it’s a damned if I do damned if I don’t. I’m also back on my bullshit trying to learn Korean again because Rabbit requested it. He wants to take me with him Korean next April when he’ll be there for work for a month, so I think he wants me to try and learn some basic survival Korean so I can go out and sightsee while he’s at work. Don’t worry about Denny my husband will be watching him, I don’t know if I’ve mentioned I’m Poly lately but I am. Rabbit has also been upgraded from SD to boyfriend which is nice because we have a good relationship. I’m sad though he’ll be out of town for a while because he’s spending Christmas with his kids up in Canada and trying to get his house ready to rent. I’m not super happy he’s moving back in with his ex-wife but I understand him wanting to spend more time with his kids so I can’t be upset. Thankfully he’s still going to be working at his job which is roughly 20 mins away from my apartment and he’ll at least have to work out of the office twice a month or so, so he’ll still be able to see me which I’m very happy about. So things are at least going well relationship wise. I just wish I could get over this resurgence of depression, I feel guilty because I realized I don’t love Denny (my Golden Retriever) the same way I love Jäger (my deceased German Shepherd), I’ve been assured by friends who have also dealt with pet loss that it’s completely ok to love them differently but I feel like Denny deserves better than this broken ass version of me who’s too scared to love him as much as Jäger. My heart was so throughly shattered by losing Jäger it just hurts to much to love with my whole heart again, and I don’t even know if I can, Jäger took so much of my heart and soul when he passed I don’t think I even have a whole heart anymore. I don’t know things have just been really hard lately and I don’t know what to do anymore. I just needed to get it out though so if you read this, thank you. I hope you lovelies are all doing well though and if you aren’t I’m sending love and hugs.
XOXO

Literally so many super practical accessories were replaced with elastane, and I mean so so many, but also different clothing design elements that are not only gorgeous, but super practical and also comfortable, were replaced by elastane, and now if you see those elements in clothes it's "aesthetic" and no one realizes the function these elements had.
Corsets and stays were the precursor to bras because they support breasts, but they had a different and arguably more important function: keeping up all those layers of skirts and petticoats. The whole corsets cause injury and deformity thing is a total myth by the way, I mean modern mass produced corsets probably cause injuries because they're ill-fitted but back in the day they were fitted to your body, not sewn off of pattern blocks. They were pretty damn comfortable, if you wanted to tight lace it was about as uncomfortable and harmful as really tight shape wear or pants, and any injury caused was similar to wearing a chest binder for too long.
Mostly what corsets did was distribute the weight of your skirts and petticoats from your waist across your pelvis, which if you've gone hiking before you'd know that backpacks have a strap across the hips for the same reason, which is that redistributing weight like that takes it off your core and onto your legs which are typically much stronger. But you don't want your skirts to start on your hips because they'll ride down all the time.
Smocking is another thing, when I discovered it (I was browsing through a huge open source database of traditional skills and trades with antique training materials that I've since lost) that I went HOLY SHIT! because not only can it he incredibly incredibly gorgeous and intricate, seriously go look at smocking patterns on pinterest you'll go insane, they were the elastic trims of clothes before elastane. When I'm rich with a lot of free time one day and get to make all my clothes it'll all be smocked, not shirred, because fuck elastane and also it's so much prettier.
Pleats? Yeah functional. In several different ways too! Pleats serve as a way to shape garments, to give them volume and help them lay in a way that's elegant and comfortable, but they're also sometimes there to make clothes adjustable. You ever see those vintage shirts that have vertical pleats all along the front panels? Yeah those were there so a single item of clothing could be taken in or let out easier as humans naturally fluctuate in size. Was it their main function? Idk probably but it was a function and an incredibly useful one!
Lacing has been making a comeback in fashion these last few years and I think y'all can guess the purpose of it easily enough, it's pretty obvious, making sure your clothes are snug as a bug without having to take it in or let it out every time you lose or gain weight or get bloated or take a huge dump. You also typically don't have to tailor clothes if it has lacing panels, because those are responsible for the fitted look, and if the creases under the laces bother you, you can get or make a little panel that goes between the laces and the fabric. I forget what it's called, but it was used with stays iirc to both provide extra support to the front and make everything seem neater, though it's entirely likely I'm remembering this tidbit wrong so if you have the correct information you're welcome to correct me.
Gloves used to be such a societal norm that there were codes for which types to wear in which settings, what fabric signified the class you were in, and wealthy people used to literally just toss a pair and buy a new one if they got dirty or damaged apparently. Now we mostly wear them as protection when working manual labor or crafts, or from the elements, or in medical settings.
Gloves have more uses than you'd think though, and I personally would love to see a resurgence of gloves in popular fashion. Gloves protect you from the cold sure, but they also protect you from the sun, from disease, from injury. I have a pair of lacy fingerless gloves just for driving because in the summer months my steering wheel gets so hot I can't touch it with my bare hands, and the backs of my hands almost always get sun while driving, so I figured why not get a little protection from both and look elegant as fuck while doing it? It worked! And I look elegant as fuck doing it.
Head scarves are a bit of a doozy, much like masks, because of the cultural associations with both. Masks obviously due to the pushback in the last few years due to enforced covid measures, but head scarves due to racism. Y'all remember those vintage pinups with women wearing head scarves and victory rolls (I think that's what it's called)? Yeah they wore them because they had to take over manual labor during the war and their hair kept getting in the way. Later we developed better headbands and pins and they became more in fashion, and then women were all forced to be housewives where stronger hold and protection wasn't necessary, and then when we entered the workforce again we had gel and mousse and hairspray and elastic hair ties.
Head scarves not only keep your hair out of your face, they also protect intricate styles (whether longer term protective styles or shorter term styles for specific events). Ask any black person why they wear a bonnet (in good faith) and you'll get a delightfully detailed explanation, which includes but isn't limited to the fact that it protects their braids, locks and hair in general. That's because it reduces friction on the scalp and hairstrands which often leads to scalp irritation, breakage and hair loss.
You wanna know how head scarves help on finer, straighter hair textures? When the wind threatens to destroy your million pin and half a can of hairspray updo, you tie your scarf up over it loosely, and boom your updo is safe. I've used it a couple of times before going to fancy events, and gotten a lot of looks because they're all conservative white Christians (I grew up around them didn't have a choice) and they were uncomfortable with it looking a little (but not really at all) like a hijab.
There is so much gorgeous, intricate and beautifully useful history to fashion, and people seem to really take it for granted due to fast fashion and consumerism and planned obsolescence. There's so so much you can do to make your clothes fit better, look better, be more comfortable, have more function, and I truly wish everyone had the opportunity and resources to learn about these things.
You know what, since I'm thinking about it anyways, let's talk formalwear accessories. Most of these are traditionally menswear but a bit of gender fuckery is good for the soul, and frankly most of these are about making your mass-produced clothing fit and lay properly without having to go to the tailor.
Shirt stays: these go around your thighs to hold your shirt down, so that it stays smooth and tucked in. They're usually elastic, with 1-3 clips, and if you wear skirts frequently this is a GREAT way to make sure your top doesn't ride up. The clips will be visible if you're wearing something tight, so loose pants or skirts are where these do best. There's also an insane version that clips to your socks, but that is for lunatics. If you wanted, you could also use one of these clips to hold up thigh-highs.
These do a great job of smoothing and narrowing the waist area by keeping your shirt from bunching there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sleeve garters: usually metal, leather, elastic, or silk. These are usually worn with button-down shirts to adjust where your cuff falls on the wrist or hand. They're properly worn on the upper arm, and you pull the fabric of the sleeve above the garter until you cuff is where you want it. Because this creates a puff of sleeve at the bicep, it also broadens the appearance of the shoulders. It's great if you're working with your hands or if your sleeves are often too long for your preference.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waistband clip or belt adjustment clip/buttons
Three different ways of tightening the waistband of a pair of pants or a skirt. You're not going to get more than an inch or so tighter without weird bunching, and for most of these you'd want them to be hidden under a shirt or jacket, but they do the job if that's something you're having issues with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Collar pins: There are so many fun ones out there, both with and without chains. They're not terribly practical, though the slight weight may help keep your collar where you want it. Also consider collar tips, which pin (surprise) to the very tips of your collar points.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sweater clips/guards: meant to hold your sweater or cardigan mostly closed. Great if your cardigan doesn't button, or if you don't like it to be buttoned all the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's tons of other stuff out there like this--etsy is a great place to find this stuff. A lot of these are old solutions to the very modern problem of mass-maufactured clothes not being as one-size-fits-all as advertised, but they're also a fun way to put a bit of personality into businesswear.

Grandma’s 2-Step Skincare Regimen
Yes, I’m serious, it’s only two steps.
My grandmother had the nicest skin I’ve seen. In her 80s, she was commonly mistaken for someone 20 years younger. These are the two products she swore by.
1. Witch Hazel - Toner - AM
If you’ve read my other posts where I talk about toners, this is the reason why I think most toners are overrated. Everything they’re trying to do, witch hazel already does, and it does it for a fraction of the price. And unlike those new products, where I feel like I don’t know if they really work, witch hazel has been around long enough that its results are proven.
Witch hazel is a small tree/large shrub bush. We distill the leaves, bark, and twigs to make the liquid we see sold in stores. It is used as a toner and astringent, and has a whole ton of uses you can read about here. As a toner, it is great for oily, acne-prone, and combination skin. It removes dirt and impurities, brightens and tightens, helps with texture and the appearance of pores and skin redness, has a mild antibacterial effect, and rebalances skin’s pH.
Use this in the AM. Put a small amount on a cotton ball or pad and gently wipe over the face, avoiding the eyes. My grandma always said you do this twice. Once to open the pores up and a second time to really get in there and pull out dirt and bacteria. Then splash your face with cool water to rinse and close the pores.
Witch hazel is sold at pharmacies. There’s witch hazel that’s mostly used for first aid and tends to be sold in generic bottles. These tend to be higher in alcohol content because they are intended to be used as an astringent or wound wash. If you pay a little more though, there are brands like T.N. Dickinson’s or Thayers, who have a higher quality product suitable to use on the face.
If you want your toner to do a little bit more, try using a Witch Hazel + Rosewater blend. Thayer’s also has a few other witch hazel blends you can look into. I recently tried Thayers Witch Hazel + Cucumber blend. (Honestly, it’s not for me. The smell bothered me a lot. But it’s not a bad product; I just didn’t like the smell.)
If you are worried about the natural alcohol content in witch hazel, some brands have released alcohol-free versions of their original formulations just for the beauty connoisseur.
2. Cold Cream - Makeup Remover, Cleanser, & Moisturizer - PM
If step one blew your mind, you’re really gonna lose it now.
Cold creams are a very old school beauty product that have been around for ages. They are emollient-rich, waterless cream cleansers that take the place of at least three products in your skincare regimen. Whoa, I know it’s crazy, right? But seriously, a good cold cream is worth its weight in gold. You smooth it on the face and neck at night, and it takes off all your makeup, gives your skin a deep, non-drying, non-stripping cleanse, and re-moisturizes it. Depending on the ingredients in the cold cream, it might also take the place of a treatment. These guys are multitasking powerhouses! They’re a skincare staple in places like France.
I know what you’re thinking. Okay, so why aren’t cold creams more popular?
I think the first reason is pretty simple. It’s because companies want you to buy more stuff. They don’t want you to have one product that does almost everything you could want. They want you to buy into the idea that you need a 6-step skincare regimen. But you don’t. A lot of my favorite products are ones that multitask.
The second reason you don’t hear much about cold creams anymore is that the skincare industry has changed, but a lot of the traditional cold cream producers haven’t. They’ve got ingredients in their products that aren’t good for your skin. Take a look at the ingredient list for Pond’s Cold Cream, which is a classic cold cream in the U.S. Even though they’ve revamped the formula, the base ingredients still aren’t great for your skin.
Third, the wording has changed. I have seen a resurgence of this type of product over the last decade or so, but they’re being called things like ‘facial balms’ or ‘melting cleansers.’ I guess to distance them from the reputation cold creams have developed or try to distinguish them as something ‘new.’ Here’s a few keywords to look for:
Cleansing Balm
Facial Balm
Melting Cleanser
Cream Cleanser
Cleansing Cream
Cold Cleansing Cream
Cold Cream
The idea is that you’re looking for a multitasking, emollient-rich product that’s going to remove makeup, cleanse, and moisturize in one step.
That being said, I do have some good Clean Beauty options for you, organized on this handy-dandy table from least to most expensive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If none of these offerings are doing it for you, it’s also easy enough to make your own cold cream. There are plenty of DIY recipes out there. I’ve made one with vegetable shortening, jojoba oil, and ylang-ylang. Works great, although some may want to avoid it because vegetable shortening has a high soy content. And, if you haven’t heard the news, we just found out through longitudinal study that soybean oil damages DNA & causes permanent changes in the brain. Given this new information, I’m now doing my best to avoid it. You could easily sub any DIY recipe that calls for vegetable shortening with coconut oil, as it has a very similar texture.
Anyway, that’s Grandma’s 2-Step Skincare Regimen for those of you who are interested in paring down your products and simplifying your routine.

She back with the goals 😎 I had a whole long post for this but it deleted itself so, here's my second attempt 😩
I've been struggling with thinking in unhealthy thought patterns again, which I tend to do when I'm very stressed. I just left an old job, started a new job, and I'm getting married in two months! So good stress, but definitely still stress lol. My solution for combatting the impulsiveness of E.D. thought patterns is introducing more structure in a healthy way (because I am still trying to lose weight, but I want to do it in a positive and sustainable way!). Hence revisiting the monthly goals, even though we're close to the end of August now. It's all about building habits!
More in depth explanations for each and a pic of the bullet journal tracking page under the cut:
1. No soda - Right now, I'm unable to have a healthy relationship with soda. It's a very big trigger for me to feel out of control and I'm unable to control myself with it and have it in a healthy amount. So until I can do that, I'd rather just not have it for now. I'm also working much longer shifts at the salon and I need to be properly hydrated!
2. Exercise - I'm intentionally keeping this vague so I don't feel like I "messed up" by not meeting whatever goal I set for myself. Usually I like to set more measurable goals but, since I'm feeling vulnerable to unhealthy thought patterns, for now I'm just trying to get back into a habit of being more mindful of and tracking my movement. And this includes any sort of intentional exercise, even if it's just walking for 10 minutes! It's better than no minutes and it was a conscious effort to move my body 👍
3. Stick to your meal plan - Because I'm at the salon for 3/4 days for 11+ hours now, I've had to start planning my meals more so I can eat lunch and dinner at work. This has resulted in me doing really well for those three days....and then sort of floundering around and eating whatever for the rest of the week 😅 So my fiancé and I came up with the solution to make a plan for the entire week including "free spaces" and treats to have so we're not overindulging (and subsequently feeding into that "messing up" mindset that comes with the resurgence of the E.D thoughts).
I think that about sums it up! Overall, this is a "progress, not perfection" month for me. I started falling back into a toxic mindset, but I noticed it, and am making plans to get back into a healthier one (while also being mindful of not pushing too hard while I'm still feeling vulnerable!).
So here's to the end of August! Do you have any goals you're working on/ready to start working on? For me it's time to get back on the horse that is healthy thinking, sustainable life changes, and just overall positivity 😎

like if Ashlyn gets dropped as the starter fr - not alternating - I think she’ll be gone. but idk… do you think that equates to her taking the weight? Scott may get to stick around bc of that. is he getting any of the blame with fans - outside of not starting Betos?
Pride would have held on for the second half if they managed Ashlyn / Erin / Brittany better. ik Erin was at the Olympics and I’m really glad she got to be there for the gold. Ashlyn played well last yr (what is going on with the pks this yr?), but like the Dash match that killed the unbeaten streak… I would have had Brittany for the KC match and Erin for the Dash. and I was truly annoyed at how they had like 10 players in the box defending set pieces but like 5 when attacking. I really got to let last season go lmao. Ali had a resurgence halfway through that season just as Pride started flatlining! she did so good toward the end. but they maybe should have let her breathe a bit more at the beginning - is that a fair assessment? this is me totally letting it go 😂
Hmm I’m not sure honestly! Because I don’t even know if she’s going to lose her starting spot?? Like I was a little surprised Betos didn’t start today and if she didn’t start after the Portland game then when would they make the move?? Scott clearly just thinks things are fine (he even said so again after todays game like he’s so oblivious I swear) and thinks it’s just a mental thing once they get behind but like?? Is he really just gonna continue to play the same players everywhere and hope things change? Like besides playing Betos for load management purposes (which he’s sucked at doing too tbh) I don’t see them making a real change at GK even if you can argue they should. But a lot of people on twitter and woso journalists not just Gotham related are starting to hint that it’s a coaching issue even if they won’t outright say it so idk. I think he’ll stick around until the end of the season at this point though.
Yeah last year was something because obviously Ali didn’t play great for most of it but it was understandable and like you said she ended up redeeming herself by the end but of course the team had collapsed by the end of the season. I feel like that was another coach that played Ali to death and to pair that with caring for a newborn it wasn’t a good mix lol. And I guess they did the same with Ash since she was playing so well but yeah the GK rotation wasn’t the best then either. And I don’t know why they keep playing Ash to death this season when she’s not even playing well. At her age and with her wear and tear it’s only going to be a negative affect in the long run for her and the team so it’s stupid. I will never understand anything this man chooses to do though and when he’s saying things are alright after a game like this…well that just says it all.

But yeah, besides the more immediate nutrition situation as came up in that last venty reply?
I'm also very concerned about my physical state over the longer term, and actually trying to recover from that medical crisis in spite of some of its aftermath. And my partner seems to be the only other person here "IRL" who even seems to have thought about that? Never mind actually caring about my quality of life in the meantime.
I mean, going into the hospital (and fairly major emergency surgery) I was physically a complete mess after SEVERAL WEEKS of The Septic Slump at home. Knowing what I do now about signs, I lay around in some level of DKA for at least two weeks straight. (Without realizing what was going on. At all. More about that later, whenever I can handle it.)
I only made it through that at all through some combination of luck and sheer stubbornness. And surviving that type of experience WILL use up whatever reserves your body had going in.
And my reserves could not have been great starting into that crisis, after years of misdiagnosed/not properly treated diabetes on top of the (also professionally neglected/gaslit/self-treated, totally predictable) existing celiac complications from longterm malabsorption.
I had already lost a lot of my hair over the years before this last big crisis, and did not have the body mass to spare. No matter how some people wanted to act. 🤨
So yeah, between getting diagnosed with malnutrition going into the hospital, the institutional nutritional fuckery there, and the fairly quickly developing swallowing problems as a further complication of the DKA episode? So that I kept losing more weight before even leaving the hospital--after finally getting back on insulin, which should do the opposite?
(It was indeed that same DKA episode which burned out my esophagus, so that it ended up ulcerating/scarring and trying to close completely up. Leading to the current near-crisis situation.)
It's amazing that I have even managed to physically recover as well as I have so far. It's really fucking amazing.
Even as frustrated as I've been getting lately at feeling weak for obvious reasons and almost like I'm moving backwards in terms of what I can accomplish.
I've been having to rest a lot, and put so much of what energy I do have into taking decent basic physical care of myself--and not relapsing on the ED front. When a serious relapse might well kill me under the circumstances. No exaggeration there. I wish it were.
Really DO NOT need to speed up the starvation, as much easier as it might feel to just stop working so hard to get as much nutrition as reasonably possible into my system.
And, as I mentioned before? I don't dare bring that part up to medical people, now that I seem to have mostly made it out of All In Your Head Land. Lest they throw me straight back into there, with ALL the ongoing health crap. 😬
So yeah, there are multiple ways that complications of that one DKA episode (and, ultimately, the whole longer medical clusterfuck leading up to that even happening) might still get me. And not even necessarily on any particularly longterm scale.
No matter how stubborn and/or tough I ultimately may or may not be? Luck can only stretch so far. And I am seriously starting to worry that it might already be trying to run out.
Even without the Plague Resurgence complicating absolutely everything. Which is another story, which involves so many other disabled people. Which is overwhelming enough that I can't let myself think about it too much.
