Attending a holy mass at a monastery chapel, I was struck by the sight of animals freely walking around. It reminded me of how, as the world modernizes, we often forget that humans aren't the only inhabitants of Earth.

Our actions have shrunk animal habitats while expanding our own, destroying nature to build structures and malls that exclude them. While some malls now allow responsible pet owners to bring their furry companions inside, restrictions are still common.

Horses, once a common mode of transport, are prohibited from city roads. Birds are discouraged from nesting near buildings due to their droppings.

Seeing animals like dogs roaming freely in the chapel filled my heart with joy. It served as a beautiful reminder that they too belong here, and shouldn't be confined or restricted. In fact, as some doggos passed by me, I even greeted them wholeheartedly with a "may God bless and give you peace.” 😁🥰

"The fish gave its life to you". 

My dad has clear memories of the time he went fishing for the first time by himself - at age three. He asked his grandpa for a bamboo stick, some thread and a hook, then went digging for some worms for feed and proudly took his very own rod out to the beach. Wearing sandals that his grandma wove for him out of grass, he braved the waves and clambered onto the rocks to get closer to the fish. In the quiet, rural island in southern Japan where he grew up, his tiny body could've easily slipped into the open sea and no one would've heard his screams. But my dad loved fishing. The little boy aspired to be a fisherman, just like many of the elders in his village.

Like my dad's family and many other Japanese families, fish, simply salted or marinated and grilled, was a mainstay of our dinners. As a young child, I'd much rather have sausages than grilled fish any day. My parents taught me to pick out hundreds of tiny bones diligently and delicately with my chopsticks, and all that fishiness in my mouth afterwards wasn't my idea of a reward for my toils.

Once, when I didn't have the patience to clean the flesh off the bones, my dad pointed out that I had too much fish meat left on my plate. "Why do I have to eat all the meat off the bones?" I asked.

"Because sakana-san (魚さん, "Mrs/Mr Fish") gave its life to you. We need to respect it."

It was a simple and tangible, yet profound life lesson for the six year-old in me. I have never left a single piece of fish meat on a bone since.
