Small Shoulders

I am resentful

For the childhood you deprived me of

One not bad enough for people to notice

But not good enough to escape unscathed

It's hard to process my hurt feelings

When I haven't had it as bad as others

But the thing is, it causes resentment to grow

My maternal grandmother’s side of the family is so good at getting cancer the older generations were part of a genetic study in getting cancer. There’s a bunch of medical treatments we’re all steered away from because of this propensity. I was raised to expect to get cancer (to demystify it and to encourage regular checks and early intervention). I have lost a grandmother, many great aunts and uncles (her siblings), aunts and uncles, all variety of cousins.
