RELAEN - BEDTIME (A TRIBUTE TO HERBIE HANCOCK)

Olivia Wendlandt , Marco Zügner , Leon Mache and Leon Raum are back with another superb and refined work!

Two years ago the german experimental jazz collective knocked we out with the outstanding Twines and today they grace our mind and soul with something really really cool.

Relaen resumed a 1979 record performed by Japanese singer Kimiko Kasai and Chicago living-legend,pianist, keyboardist, composer, band leader Herbie Hancock called Butterfly. They cooked an elegant revisitation of the song entitled Tell Me A Bedtime Story, recording a sumptuous,organic,vibrant and intimate rendition able to convey incredible emotions.

RELAEN - BEAT #4

Hey cool people , are you ready for something sophisticated?

If the answer is yes , then prick up your ears ,especially if you’re avid jazz music lovers.

Five months ago we compiled a jazz selection entitled Lines , giving to our audience the opportunity to taste impressive tracks performed by incredible artists like Takuya Kuroda,Kendra Foster,Chantae Cann, Zara McFarlane and Relaen. 

Well, Relaen‘s been on our radar for a while!

The german ensemble composed by drummer Leon Raum, bassist Leon Mache, saxophonist Marco Zügner and keyboardist and lead vocalist Olivia Wendlandt delighted our senses with a fresh and eclectic approach that reminds us innovative groups like Moonchild and Hiatus Kaiyote among others.

Last year indipendent label Wadada Records promoted the captivating opus by Relaen called Twines , followed in February by Twines Rework ( a project packed with revisitations handled by some serious beatmakers/producers such as Maloon The Boom and FloFilz).

Five days ago Olivia and co. , dropped anotha interesting EP , which proves a genuine talent which blooms brilliantly but briefly each year, delivering excellent music where jazz and nu-soul find a fertile breeding ground , fueled by live instrumentation and  a voice which floats over the flawlessly soothing sounds.

Now open your mind to embrace the smooth sound of Beat #4

Brooklyn based Space Captain is what we consider a great exponent of the avant-garde future soul scene and through the mastery and creative mind of its members , it contributed to push the boundaries of convential genres with an innovative approach!

Lead vocalist Maralisa Simmons-Cook, producer and bassist Alex Pyle , guitarists Gray Hall and Mike Haldeman , drummer  Joey Ziegler , keyboardist  Joy Morales and trumpeter Lessie Vonner are the visionaries behind Space Captain musical project.

Space Captain excellent music popped up under our radar in 2013 when they released independently the superlative and refined song entitled Easier  , offering an exquisite taste of the their cosmic world.

The band joined the independent british label Tru Thoughts (mad respect to Robert Luis and Paul Jonas head honchos of the label , which spread and support really dope music from Quantic to Nostalgia 77 , from Alice Russel to Moonchild and the new entries such as Rhi) and released last year All Flowers In Time a real uplifting sonic experience!

Today scrtblk crew highly recommends the new treatment remix of Space Captain song called Blue flawlessly handled by Texas young,cool and virtuoso jazz multi-intrumentalist Sly5thAve (fresh of his recent masterpiece The Invisible Man: An Orchestral Tribute to Dr.Dre , make sure y’all to taste Let Me Ride featuring the amazing Jimetta Rose) and mastered by Quantic.

TAKUYA KURODA FEAT. JOSE JAMES – EVERYBODY LOVES THE SUNSHINE

Refined and with a great aesthetic sense , New York based trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is one of  those artists able to paint incredible atmospheres through the notes of his trumpet. The Blu Note virtuoso musician stepped into the limelight with his fourth album titled Rising Son recruiting a line up of dope jazz musicians such as Kris Bowers and Solomon Dorsey among others. Behind the boards , Jose James is the sonic-scientist which wrapped a well-appointed production and put his signature style over the superb rendition of Roy Ayers Everybody Loves The Sunshine.

MR.JUKES FEAT. BJ THE CHICAGO KID – ANGELS/YOUR LOVE

Last month we invited y’all to explore the sound of British producer Jack Steadman , suggesting the soul piece titled From Golden Stars Comes Silver Dew . The song appeared on Jack Steadman debut solo project called God First released under the moniker Mr.Jukes. God First is the spectacular attempt of a gifted artist who eschews musical conventions in favour of a free artistic expression,flirting with self-confidence and brilliance with funk,hip-hop,soul and jazz sonorities. Angels/Your Love is definitely one of our fav pieces from God First,featuring stellar r&b crooner BJ The Chicago Kid.

30/70 COLLECTIVE – THE STRUT

We often leave New York streets to reach exciting places from every corner of the world with the aim of discovering interesting artists that deserve your attention!On one such trip,we stumbled upon the voice of Ms, Allysha Joy , a bona-fide Melbourne-bred singer which reminds us of Nai Palm of Hiatus Kayiote. We love Allysha Joy as solo artist but we also love her side project called 30/70 a brilliant collective composed by Allysha Joy, Zeke Ruckman,Henry Hicks,Thomas Mansfield and  pianist Jarrod Chase. 30/70 music can be described as a cathartic sonic experience , a constant experimentation of different sounds: jazz,hip-hop and electro-soul with nuances of soulful and groovy melody.Prick up your ears and listen closely The Strut.  The song is included on da project Cold Radish Coma released two years ago

AKUA NARU FEAT. CHRISTIAN SCOTT – (BLACK &) BLUES PEOPLE

Akua Naru is one of the most clever,brilliant,humble conscious hip-hop lyricist of the moment…unfortunately underexposed,as a matter of fact. This beautiful female got so much class and ethic that run through her veins and every songs she wrote sounds like pure poetry. In 2015 Akua Naru released the beyond amazing The Miner’s Canary , a top-notch album enhanced with a line up of stellar  acts such as Georgia Anne Muldrow, Cody ChesnuTT and Sa-Roc among others. Produced with an organic approach The Miner’s Canary includes the jazzy jam called (Black &) Blues People that boasts appearance from jazz trumpeter Christian Scott.

CYANCA – NEW PHONE, WHO DIS

She’s a well-rounded emerging artist, she comes straight from North Carolina and she draws inspiration from D’Angelo,Erykah Badu and producers such as Ryan Leslie and Pharrell. Scratchtheblock fam , allow us to introduce you to the wonderful world of Cyanca. Combining great skills as musician,songwriter,producer and singer, Cyanca engaged our soul with the superlative smooth piece entitled New Phone , Who Dis (from the project The Isle Of Queens ) produced sampling japanese jazz trombonist Hiroshi Suzuki ‘s masterpiece called Romance.

  MARK DE CLIVE-LOWE FEAT. NIA ANDREWS – HOOLIGAN

If you’re looking for artists with more organic approach to music, then you should partake in a Mark de Clive-Lowe live session or you could taste his amazing projects. This maverick  musician,producer,arranger as well as DJ knows exactly how to express himself….and he’s able to talk to a boundless audience through a universal language: his music!! In 2011 Mark unleashed his best album, Renegades via U.K imprint Tru Thoughts,  circumnavigating “the planet music”,approaching to exciting sonic landscapes where broken beat, future jazz, neo-soul engage the attention of the listener. Assisted by masterminds such as Richard Spaven,Lil John Roberts,Pino Palladino and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson , Mr. Lowe delights our palates with refined pieces like Hooligan featuring the delectable voice of Nia Andrews.

MAURICE BROWN FEAT. TALIB KWELI,KRIS BOWERS AND SOLOMON DORSEY – STAND UP

Grammy award-winning Maurice Brown released this year his last effort titled The Mood enlisting hot artists such as Chris Turner and veteran hip-hop rapper Talib Kweli plus a plethora of trained musicians like Chris Bowers,Solomon Dorsey and Saunders Sermons among others. The jazz trumpeter got incredible skills as musician,composer, arranger and producer …so no wonder if the Illinois triple threat represents an in-demand artist , who had the pleasure to work with a huge list of  performers such as Omar,Timothy Bloom,Tedeschi Trucks Band,Macy Gray,Talib Kweli,Marcus Miller,Ski Beatz,Gordon Chambers and The RH Factor. Brown’s production process led him to explore different sonorities despite his jazz inclinations and probably in our opinion this is the main reason we love “Mobetta” signature sound. Vibe with us listening to the refined Stand Up featuring microphone maestro Talib Kweli.

SERAVINCE FEAT. SHARLENE HECTOR AND ESPERANZAH – 94

Put together dutch keyboardist and composer Vincent Helbers and U.K renowned drummer,composer,producer Richard Spaven and you will be in front of something epic!!! Yezzir, in 2013 Mr. Helbers launched his musical project dubbed Seravince wrapping a spectacular and supa-rifined album titled Hear To See under dutch label Moovmnt Records. The “jazz-oriented” masterpiece hosts interesting musicians such as guitarist Marcus Machado (Conya Doss,Nick Hakim,Pete Rock) and Richard Spaven (José James,Flying Lotus,Gregory Porter,4 Hero , Mark de Clive-Lowe) as well as stellar performers like Renee Neufville. We select the smooth,hypnothic and jazzy piece titled 94.

TAMARA RENEE – CYCLES

Harlem singer/musician/songwriter Tamara Renée popped up under our radar with her monumental single titled  Cycles. The dreamy jazz piece was released last year and it is included on Renée album Conjour Woman a well-appointed project that probably will satisfy your hunger for quality experimental sounds.
