prompt: friends ༉ @moonwater-microfic ༉ word count: 445
cw: mild sexual content, mdni, credit to @indigostation for the ‘little dove’ nickname, regulus is down bad (as he should)
Tumblr media
“this means nothing,” regulus mumbles as he tugs remus’ gryffindor tie to his chest as their lips meet in a searing kiss
remus smirks into their kiss, “whatever you say little dove.”
his voice is teasing and amused yet it has regulus weak in the knees.
he doesn’t do this. have hookups, he’s a pureblood raised in a ‘date to marry’ culture.
it’s unimportant that it’s subsequently also the same culture that holds a special preference to such incestous pairings.
nevertheless, regulus had always planned to be a ‘one and done’ man.
he watched as his brother paraded around his own flavours of the week and any idea that seemed to be dubbed the ‘sirius black way’ had thus removed any will he once had to commit such acts.
which is why it was so suprising to find himself thrust against the bookshelf’s in the hogwarts library being quite decently snogged if he did say so himself.
by one of his brother’s gryffindor friends no less.
remus lupin was an enigma, a quiet, witty and sarcastic enigma that regulus stood no chance against.
the taller boy has him caged tightly against the bookshelf’s, old hardcovers wedging themselves into his vertebrae yet the slightly chapped lips meeting his own cause him to lose all sense of reality.
he knows he is well and truly fucked as soon as remus’ arms travel from where he leans down to meet regulus’ kiss to thread his hands through his dark curls.
regulus lets out a squeak that is equal parts embarrassing and arousing as remus growls into their kiss before tugging his hair.
let it be known that regulus black has never claimed to be a person with a strong sense of authority when stood before a tall, pretty boy.
regulus shamelessly hooks his legs around remus’ hips and arches his back to curl himself further into remus’ body.
remus detaches their lips which has regulus whimpering at the loss, breath hitching however as remus trails his lips down to his neck before sucking what he knows will be a prominent dark bruise tomorrow morning.
“still mean nothing?” remus whispers as he nips regulus’ ear with suspiciously sharp teeth.
regulus takes a moment to come out of his lustful daze, blinking his eyes owlishly before shaking his head without talking.
remus tugs regulus by the chin to lock eyes with him, “words, little dove” remus says, confident yet with a flicker of hesitation in his gaze.
“no, this means something” regulus whispers, lips glossy and pupils blown.
remus smirks wickedly before regulus pulls him back into a teeth-clashing kiss that leaves them both breathless and giggling like children.

Everyone talks about how Remus could pull Regulus to the light side.
But can we consider Regulus pulling Remus to the dark side?
I mean, both are scared little pups that just want to be loved - perfect targets for a cult.
Creatures are (somewhat) accepted by Voldy, see Greyback, the alliances with the werewolves, giants, etc. While the current government is making their lives hell.
Really, the only problem would be that Remus loves his muggle mother, but Voldemort can be charming af, and Remus is a talented young wizard (that can also be weaponised during full moons).
The promise of a place where people know he is a werewolf and still accept him, where he has Regulus and the Slytherin Skittles… The promise of a world where he doesn’t have to feel hate simply bc he is a werewolf.
If taken in at a weak moment, it could have happened.

Moonwater? Their love isn't loud, and to anyone who doesn't know them, it might not even look like love at all. But to them, it's the deepest kind.
Regulus is the type to roll his eyes whenever Remus speaks, muttering, "You're insufferable, Lupin," but Remus notices how he always listens, even when pretending not to care.
He shoves a book into Remus’s hands instead of saying "I thought you’d like this." It’s always something Remus has been meaning to read.
"You look like a mess," he huffs, before straightening Remus’s tie and smoothing his jumper.
When they're studying together, Regulus sighs dramatically, insults Remus’s handwriting, and re-does his notes under the guise of "I can't stand looking at this."
He never outright says he wants Remus around, but his insults come with an unspoken invitation: "Go away." (Stay.)
If someone else is rude to Remus, Regulus suddenly forgets how to be cold. "You don't talk to him like that," he snaps, as if he is the only one allowed to be rude to Remus.
Remus never forces Regulus to be more affectionate than he’s comfortable with. Instead, he learns to read the signs.
He always leaves Regulus’s tea just the way he likes it, without being asked. If Regulus ever acknowledges it, it’s only with an unimpressed look and a muttered, "Predictable."
If Regulus falls asleep in the library, Remus drapes his own jumper over him and leaves before he wakes up. (The next day, Regulus shoves it back at him without a word, but it’s neatly folded.)
When Regulus has a headache, Remus just knows. He hands him a potion without a word, only to get a scoff in response.
Whenever Regulus insults him, Remus just grins, completely unaffected. If anything, he looks fond.
When Remus touches him—fingertips brushing his wrist, a quiet hand on his shoulder—he does it so casually that it never forces Regulus to react. Regulus never pulls away.
No one else sees the way Regulus shows love, but Remus does. And that's enough.

“You don’t scare me.” Remus would state plainly, crossing his legs. Comfortably sat on that worn leather couch in their nook of the library.
Regulus sat across him, would look up from his book. His brow furrowing in confusion by the sudden interruption to their quiet time together. “Pardon?”
“You’re not scary.” Remus would repeat, his tone just as calm as the first time he’d said it.
Regulus would halfhazardly mark his place in his book and shut it closed. So, he had heard correctly. What sort of mind games was Remus playing? “Will you at least elaborate?”
“No.” Remus would decide as he said it, offering Regulus that same smile that always seemed to decorate his face these days.
“No?” Regulus would push, indignant.
“No.”

No one fucks with my baby, but it's Regulus Black cornering every one who has ever said something bad about Remus before they even got together.
It's Regulus who had been terrorizing Slytherins to not say a word to Lupin because he would be taking care of him and no one else.
It's Regulus who punched Sirius in the face after not speaking to him for years after the prank
It's Regulus who faced Dumbledore about him only admitting Remus to Hogwarts to be his soldier when the time comes.
It's Regulus who imperio'd Severus to apologize to Remus after he called him a half breed when he thought no one was listening.
It's Regulus who slithered in the dead of the night to the Lupin's house into Lyall's room, his shadow dancing on the bedroom wall that was illuminated by the silver light of the full moon in the sky, smiling as he saw the look of terror reflected in his eyes.
If I was a blackthorn tree, I'd want to be felled by you, held by you, fuel the PYRE of your enemies.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, that is the same Regulus Black who buries his face into the crook of Remus' face after all of that is done, because simply, no one fucks with his baby.

what if after Remus and Regulus grow up and get married and stuff, Regulus becomes very vocal about how werewolves should be treated better in society. and everyone thinks its just because he used to be a death eater, and the death eaters were known to work with werewolves, but actually its because of Remus

No wonder Moonwater work so well as friends. Regulus is the type of person to call you a piece of shit, and Remus will elaborate on exactly why you're a piece of shit.

codependent moonwater
regulus who has such bad separation anxiety that he just follows remus around like a lost puppy.
regulus clenching his hand around the back of remus’ sweater whenever he gets too far away from him
regulus who climbs into remus’ lap in broad daylight because he needs to be under his skin but this is as good as it’s gonna get
regulus who just has to look at remus with that pout of his and remus is already caving in.
remus who’s so close to the full moon that his possessive nature can’t help but preen at the sight of regulus looking to him for direction and purpose.
remus’ mind just chanting ‘mine mine mine’ whenever regulus makes eye contact with him
remus who has to scent and/or mark up regulus the week before the moon
remus who has regulus wear his jumpers when they hang out so that every scent that’s not his is suffocated by his own.
similarly, remus who flips between possessive and dominant to insecure loser bf who’s so clingy to regulus.
i’m talking, hand holding, waist gripping, arm tugging, anywhere.
like this man is never letting reg out of his sight bc, why would he wanna leave me?? does he not want me??
and regulus who’s never been wanted by anyone in his life, eats. this. shit. up.

Work broke me…
Regulus highly suspected that he wouldn’t return from the cave. After all, Kreacher looked awful when he first came back with Voldemort, and there were surely even more protective spells around.
So he ordered his house elf to send a pre-written letter.
Remus crumbled, sobbing when he read it.
There was only one line:
„I love you. Always have and always will.“

Moonwater microfic
Word count: 300
Tw: none
“You need to stop looking at me like that.”
Remus’s voice is low, tired, but edged with something sharper—something dangerously close to regret. He stands a few feet away from Regulus, shoulders tense as if he’s preparing for an argument.
Regulus exhales a slow breath, tilting his head. “Like what?” His voice is soft, mocking.
“Like you actually care,” Remus mutters.
Regulus lets out a quiet laugh. “Oh, but I do,” he says, stepping closer. His presence is suffocating, all cold hands and sharp eyes, a storm just waiting to crack open. "You're just upset that I don’t care the way you want me to.”
Remus clenches his jaw. “You don’t care at all,” he snaps, but it lacks conviction.
Regulus reaches out, fingers brushing against Remus’s wrist, trailing down to where the cuff of his sweater meets skin. “If that were true, why are you still here?”
Remus doesn’t have an answer to that.
He should have walked away weeks ago—when Regulus had first let slip the words ‘The Dark Lord will change everything.’ When he’d first seen the glint of something twisted in Regulus’s gaze, the slow, creeping pull of something Remus didn’t want to name.
But he hadn’t walked away then. And he isn’t walking away now.
Regulus smirks like he knows it. “You think you can save me,” he murmurs, stepping closer until Remus’s back is nearly against the wall. “But you’re not a hero, Lupin.” His fingers ghost over Remus’s pulse. “You’re just as lost as I am.”
Remus jerks away, as if burned. “I’m not you.”
Regulus shrugs. “Keep telling yourself that.”
The worst part is, a small, rotting part of Remus believes him. Because if he were truly different—if he were truly better—he wouldn’t let Regulus kiss him after this.
But he does.
