one of the things that I found particularly interesting in Demigods of Olympus is that it finally gives the best direct comparison we've seen so far between Percy and another character's experiences in terms of academics and particularly ableist discrimination.

The way Zane describes his experiences and what we see in his POV is that, while he is similarly discriminated against for his "atypical" behavior and blame is placed on him, the only sorts of punishments he receives for this are relatively benign, such as an increase in counseling. (It is also notable that Zane is somewhat autistic-coded, such as having the "incorrect" scripts when speaking with adults and Sam explicitly reminding him to remember to make proper eye contact.) Percy, on the other hand, similarly experiences discrimination for "atypical" behavior, but whereas Zane is treated as "too smart for his own good" and given slaps on the wrist, Percy is automatically labeled as aggressive, destructive, and a trouble-maker based on preconceived assumptions about him and is more severely punished, such as being frequently expelled.

We rarely get this level of direct comparison between Percy's experiences and that of another character, particularly such similar experiences, so looking at the differences is really interesting to gauge what their different experiences with ableist discrimination is like - and how it could potentially tie into intersectionality and other forms of discrimination at play for them.

For instance, Zane's parents are generally heavily implied to be middle-class and/or generally financially secure, versus Percy who grew up poor, so it could be classism in combination with ableist discrimination. Alternatively, it could be intersectionality with racial discrimination, as neurodivergent behavior in people of color is significantly more likely to be punished more severely and labeled as aggressive or disruptive behavior due to racist preconceptions - particularly since we know Percy's experiences with ableist discrimination are also somewhat based on assumptions people make regarding his appearance. Both Zane and Percy are racially ambiguous - Zane's appearance essentially being completely unspecified, but Percy at least having some notable details such as having a deep tan complexion. If not racism, it could also be colorism, which in this context often has similar intersectionality. There's a lot of potential options.

It's just very interesting to me! I love having such a direct point of comparison to examine the experiences of two characters within.

before I do the long feminist recontextualization ramble on lmm's warriors album, I must note that the album, despite it being lmm's grittiest work, has such a hopeful tone in it especially near the end. Perhaps the hopeful tones really shine through especially in the backdrop of among the grittiest subject matter featured in MT, but there is something so heartwarming in this being a VERY intentional choice - what with cyrus' dream and the songs that follow with cleon and the gramercy riffs. in their grief and sorrow especially they still sing of giving life meaning - breathing in and believing in the hope of unification against the bigger forces in tow (acab). And this shines especially so with this album's interpretation that the gangs are more of community protectors than deviants and ruffians - and the reason they all believed in Cyrus in the first place is because they wanted a better city for their constituents.

simply said in "somewhere in the city" and simply repeated in the album's finale, they seek a city where they all come home alive.

Bruises, Obsession, "frame me up on the wall to keep me out of trouble"

Brief synopsis: Tim reflects on why he became Robin

Batman needs a Robin. He does. Tim has done the calculations over and over and over again.

Batman can not exist by himself. He can not work alone. He specifically needs a Robin.

Cases solved increase, victim casualties decrease, injuries sustained decrease, Bruce's mood overall increases, and crime rate is drastically lowered. Tim's done the math. The math points to this deduction.

Batman needs a Robin.

Even through the changes in who wore which cape, the calculations still pointed to this fact:

Batman needs a Robin.

It's vital to Batman to have a Robin. It's vital to Gotham to have Batman.

It's easy for Tim to support that cause.

So, Tim gave all he could to Bruce. He helped him when he fell back into bad habits again and again and again and again and again.

It doesn't matter that Bruce hurts Tim sometimes. The man never means it maliciously. 

Tim even feels sorry for Bruce and his tendency to always lash out and hurt those he loves. He feels bad that the man needs Tim to help him and that no one else could or would.

This is why Tim became Robin. It's why he rarely directly confronts Bruce for the risk of Bruce not allowing that help. It's why he doesn't argue with the man in order to keep the peace. Tim just maneuvers behind Bruce's back.

It doesn't matter that Tim finds himself resorting to methods that make him uncomfortable or that he’s becoming shaped in Bruce's own ill-fitting shadow. As long as Batman is needed, Tim will be needed.

No matter the way it scrapes at Tim's need for independency.

Before he threw on a cape, Tim had friends. It wasn't easy to maintain friends, but he didn't lie to them. He didn't have to hide injuries, ditch plans, and spend most of their hangouts worrying about whether Bruce would be alive by the time Tim returned. 

With the stress and the tragedies and the way that Robin seemed to consume Timothy Drake, he looked up one day to realize he lost all of his friends. Robin had friends, important and deeply cherished ones, but Timothy Drake didn't. Between all of the death and Tim's distance, he lost everyone dear to just Tim. His only connections were through a mask.

Tim only realized that after the fact.

Bruce needs Tim, even if the man had plenty of other people to rely on.

He does.

And Tim? He's not Robin anymore. It has always been a temporary gig. No one has been an adult and Robin. Children grow up.

Still, Tim became Robin for Batman. He became the Dark Knight’s pillar, his light. He sacrificed so much because Batman needs a Robin.

And he still needs Tim.

So, Tim became Red Robin because Bruce still needs Tim.
