Got any Carrie Kelly headcanons? She is such an underrated Robin
For those of you who are new here, Carrie Kelley is technically the third Robin after Jason. She's had a couple of cameos across different universes (like as Damian's acting teacher), but the majority of her appearances are confined to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns where she is a 13-year-old girl who takes up the Robin mantle herself after an aging Bruce returns to the vigilante scene. Her canon sucks, but since I'm out here butchering the batfam anyway, I might as well revamp her characterization.
In regards to her place in the batfam, I think 13-14 is a good age for her because it helps fill in the gap between Tim/Duke and Damian, plus it adds balance because the rest of the girls skew older and it gives her more room for growth. Also 13 is prime Chaotic Weird Girl age and Carrie would absolutely be one
And I know she was briefly Batgirl in canon but can we also revamp that? There's a Batgirl void that she can totally fill but canon is like unseasoned boiled brussels sprouts. In my mind she's Batgirl but with a better costume, different mindset, and keeps her fun and distinct firecracker slingshot
Every time she goes shopping with Alfred, she comes back with another candlestick. She's up to ten now and they're all sitting in her room, fire hazards waiting to happen
She volunteers to help with the kindergarten and she's really good with kids... when she's not acting like one herself. She comes home after the first day with finger paint all over her face
A carjacker tries to break into the Batmobile and she just walks up to them like "Excuse me that's not yours"
She always keeps the dictionary up on her phone in the unlikely event she needs to prove to someone that contranyms are thing

a collection of eco friendly lifestyle ideas + swaps from various sources around the web:
reusable makeup remover wipes/cotton rounds - i use these and they’re way softer on the skin and bigger so you can use multiple times before washing either in sink or with a laundry load.
cutting products open when they are almost finished - will acc save a lot of money and means that even if buying sustainably is inaccessible to you (valid!) you can make products last for longer
freeze your overripe fruits for smoothies - all tastes the same, means you can make ur own cute lil smoothie mixes and they are often thicker!!
wash dry and reuse plastic bags - they’re almost unavoidable, but you can reuse them easily (i do this for my lunch!)
buy slow fashion - to some this might be too pricey which is totally fine!! but for my uk ppl: run and fly, lucy and yak, and fat face all look rly good and have fun clothing.
eat plant based food - you don’t have to be a vegetarian, you can do meat free monday or just choose the mcplant over a normal burger at maccies! quorn has acc aamzing chicken nuggets and often supermarkets have vegetarian aisles!
support your local farmers market - they often do not wax their apples and you will actually be able to support local businesses instead of big corporations! they also are just fun to go to :)
use a bar dish soap and a bamboo brush
to wash your body, buy bar soap and a net type pouch for it to be able to save it and exfoliate, often less expensive and not packaged in plastic, more scents or you can even make your own!! i’ve heard black african soap is rly good!
use a recycled plastic toothbrush over a normal one - you can use bamboo, but for me bc of sensory issues i can’t, so this is a nice compromise!
use beeswax wraps for food instead of clingfilm - they are more sticky and thick so accessible for people with motor issues (maybe, correct me if i’m wrong but less delicate?) and they have fun patterns and are available from lots of small businesses
instead of liquid hand soap, either use a bar soap or my preference would be a glass pump bottle and tablets that you can dissolve as i find bar soap hard to handle, but bar soap you can keep in tins!
use a reusable water bottle - you can fill them with fizzy drinks or energy drinks, there’s no rules against this!! they keep your drink cold and are sturdier then plastic, and definitely cheaper!! you can also draw on some or stick stickers on to make them more ‘you’!
use cloth napkins and ‘unpaper’ towels instead of rolls of paper towels
buy in bulk
use an ice tray or machine instead of buying big bags from the store - less heavy definitely, and you can add fruits and make ice pops with trays!!
use a refillable or natural deodorant- i use wild (uk ppl!!) and it smells nice, the refills are easy and come in paper and i have a rly cute metal holder!!
you can get reusable cupcake papers - esp for my ppl who like the lick the bottom, they won’t fall apart XD!
use a kindle - reduces the amount of paper books you have to buy, easily transportable, can lend books out to ppl and cheaper books!
bring your own lunch - esp if ur a picky eater like me, i often bring a cheese sandwich and some crisps places so i’m not stuck not eating or choking down food i don’t like and leaving leftovers, also means you can use your own plastic tupperwares instead of store bought single use things lol
grow your own things - i used to grow strawberries as a child and it was surprisingly easily, some ideas are bottle tower gardens and a kitchen herb gardens, you can also grow cat grass and catnip for all my cat parents out there :)
collect rainwater for your plants - just keep a mason jar in your backyard if you have one, or journey out when it’s raining and fill a jar, will last you a bit!!

Sébastien Kopp, you are the co-founder of Veja[1], and you have decided to do something useful?
Sébastien Kopp: For the big brands, the sneakers are made in Asia, Vietnam, Bangladesh in terrible conditions. We rebuilt this model differently. As we knew nothing about it, we took things literally. We said to ourselves that we had to start directly with the raw materials. We wondered how to find natural and ecological materials. Veja's first move was to go into the field to find organic cotton, to find wild rubber, in Brazil and then in Peru. Deconstructing a model is not very rocket science. It's a bit of common sense and start as far down the chain as possible.
Everyone looked at us laughing, both our friends, our parents and people in general told us that we were going in any direction at all. But, they saw us so happy to meet worlds that were not ours. This creates the base of Veja. Do not talk too much but rather do, be on the ground. Today, we are 500. We have offices in the Amazon, in São Paulo... In Southeast Asia, the working week is between 70 and 90 hours. In Brazil, it is between 40 and 41 hours.
What interests us is to create a completely different model. Yes, Veja is much more expensive to manufacture, our shoes cost between five and seven times more, but we get away with it because we never advertise. This enables us to sell them at a fair price. It's not "cheap", but compared to the big brands, everything is invested in production. We have a turnover of about 4 million a year. The average price is around 110 or 115 euros.[2]
Justine Hutteau, you are the co-founder of Respire[3], can you tell us more?
Justine Hutteau: Respire represents high-performance natural skincare products. They have natural formulas, 98% on average are of natural origin. Four years ago, when we started, very few natural products were on the market. Today there are more and more. We want to show consumers that we are capable of making clean formulas. As a precaution, we do not use banned ingredients. We make products that are effective and pleasant to use. What we want is to support consumers in their ecological transition with a range of solid products, deodorants, shampoos. And we have a range of liquid products in recycled, recyclable, refillable packs to educate consumers about recycling, refilling and supporting them in the transition to solid.[4]
Is it a cost, these products that are recycled and made solid?
J. Hutteau: We work with around thirty laboratories throughout France to find effective formulas. We involve our community of consumers on a daily basis. We have them test our products before they come out. At first, we started on social media without saying what Respire was. There was so much enthusiasm: people wanted to meet us, we organised meetings for several months. We exchanged regularly with these 100 people. Today, it's a private Instagram account with 800 people, consumers who want to get involved and test the products with us.
I have always dreamed of entrepreneurship because I come from a family of entrepreneurs. I always saw my father very happy when he came home from work. From a very young age, I told myself that I wanted to get into entrepreneurship. When I came back from my studies at HEC Montréal[5], I had a health issue that made me realise the importance of taking care of myself and to use everyday’s hygiene products. I realised that deodorant was a taboo subject.
Lucie Basch, you co-founded Too Good Too Go[6], an application to fight against food waste that collects unsold items from merchants.[7]
Lucie Basch: The idea is to enable everyone to make a concrete commitment to the fight against food waste. I don't know how many of you are aware of the amount of food products that are thrown away in the world? It is 30%, at the consumer level. Most of the food waste takes place in our fridge, in the back of our cupboards. The whole point of Too Good To Go is to raise awareness of this cause, that it is totally unacceptable in a context of climate crisis.
Food waste accounts for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions. And in a context of growing lack of purchasing power, hundreds of millions of people are struggling to eat, the idea was above all to talk about the problem and the solutions. And to enable everyone to engage in the recovery of a basket of unsold products during the day. We download the application, we see the various merchants involved around us and we pay a small price on the application, between three and five euros and we pick up at closing time the products that the merchant was about to throw away.
Today, we save more than three meals every second. We save meals in 15 countries in Europe and 2 countries outside of Europe. These are applications that help us think about the world of tomorrow and that make us want to get involved by talking about solutions and possibilities of getting involved.
What is your background ?
L. Basch: I am an engineer by training. I have always been fascinated by food. I started my career at a food giant, quite naively. After two years, I said to myself that it would be more effective to go through impact entrepreneurship, to be involved in the creation of a new food system, in new companies that think about the food of tomorrow.
There is a pride somewhere when you are an entrepreneur, a desire to do well, for all three?
L. Basch: Pride perhaps, but for me it's rather secondary. It is rather the duty and the desire to get involved. The idea of getting up every morning to create the solution and tell myself that we are having a real impact today, with Too Good To Go, we have saved more than 200 million meals today. This is thanks to the millions of users who participate.
S. Kopp: Celebrating sucks a bit. We have passed many stages, we have many victories. But we are in perpetual dissatisfaction. We know that everything is very fragile. It's more determination than pride. We have got always waves in the face. When you set up projects, whatever they are, as small as you start, as medium-sized as you become, as big as you can become, there are always difficulties, one has to convince others. At first we were very frustrated. No one understood what we were doing. Organic, recycling, manufacturing, social integration... We may have been ahead, but there are a lot of things to do, a lot of things to reinvent. The only thing we say to ourselves is that we have to show that it is possible to make a company that is both attentive to the producers and and to the remuneration of the organic cotton producer, as well as to the consumption of electricity. ... Pride, we have none. But the determination is even stronger than 15 years ago.
L. Basch: To pick up on what you're saying, I completely agree. Many companies are a little stuck in their economic imperative. Today, it is the role of an entrepreneur to succeed on all three levels. I'm not saying that we are perfect. It's super hard. But it is essential.
Does this imply even more criteria to take into account to surpass oneself? Is it complicated?
S. Kopp: We introduced three-month paternity leave four years ago. We didn't realise that the paternity leave before was perhaps the most macho thing in the world. We were lucky enough to set it up in 2017, and that one of my closest associates took advantage of it first. His testimony gives me chills today. It changes everything. It can be small things as well as big things. Everything is important. We have a world to reinvent. Let's embrace it. Let's break our necks. Let's get up and try it all over again. This is proof that companies only have part of the solution in their hands. We do business, we are useful. This is the new equation.
Therefore, we need consumers, provide education. We are responsible for that. The pride I have is to tell myself that we are all managing together to change consumption habits because we are managing to develop healthier products.
The consumer is ready to pay more to have ethics, sustainability?
S. Kopp: It's not easy. I would say yes. I'm not going to say that these are much more expensive products... Veja is accessible premium. We are not much more expensive than brands that do less well than us. We have the right price. Consumers who are educated and who are ready to consume differently, are ready to perceive it. It is up to us, as an entrepreneur, to do our best to make prices as affordable as possible.
We talk a lot about this subject of price, particularly in the context of inflation. The consumer wants everything but is not ready to pay for it.
S. Kopp: I don't think that's true. If we understand why, we are ready to do it. Veja shows it. I work with a brand called C'est qui le Patron[8] and that says "this milk pays a fair price to the producer." There are 15 million consumers who have chosen to pay the extra seven cents. When we are told why it costs the price, we are ready to commit. It is important to make a distinction between price and value. In a former life we set up an NGO and ended up in a Chinese factory that makes clothes. If people saw how FMCG, your suit, your shirt, if people saw how it's made, and in what conditions the people live in who make it, we'd buy completely differently.
Do you receive more CVs In your companies?
J. Hutteau: At Respire, we have received a lot of resumes since we launched. We receive a lot of unsolicited applications. What strikes me is that the interviews I go through, people always tell me "I want to give a meaning to my professional life." We feel that young people want to go and work in clubs where it makes sense. They don't want to go and work in a company that funds something devastating for the ecology. For us, it has never been a problem to recruit. On the contrary. It's sorting it out that's complicated. To find the passion and skills that will help us deploy this impact.
Do you manage differently in your companies? Is there a way of addressing, of managing employees' careers differently?
L. Basch: Yes. It's pretty obvious. Our daily performance measure is the number of meals saved. We have a way of thinking about performance that is completely different from that of a firm looking for profit. I know much less about my profit numbers rather than the number of meals saved.

Unilever has just made a bold move towards its commitment to support inclusion and diversity in the beauty industry.
It came after the major consumer goods conglomerate recently announced that it would remove the word “normal” on all of its products, varying from personal care and beauty.
Unilever Vows for Positive Beauty
For more than many decades, Unilever Group has maintained its status as one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies and is said to be the fourth largest FMCG company worldwide in terms of sales.
Now, the London-based company, which owns more than 400 brands that includes St. Ives, Dove, Lifebuoy, Axe, and Tresemmé, explained in its recent press release that this move is a part of their “new Positive Beauty vision and strategy.”
This is to roll out several progressive commitments and actions for their brands that would “champion a new era of beauty which is equitable and inclusive” and pledge for a sustainable environment.
In addition, eliminating the word “normal” is the company’s action to “end discrimination and advocating for a more inclusive vision of beauty” and to “challenge narrow beauty ideals.
The said decision comes after Unilever has conducted a global study across several countries like China, India, Brazil, Brazil, the U.S, the U.K, and more regarding consumer’s expectations and experience towards their brands.
With over 10,000 respondents, the company learned that 52 percent of them focus on Unilever’s stand on social issues while the other half felt that having the word “normal” in their packaging makes consumers feel “excluded.”
“It comes as global research into people’s experiences of the beauty industry reveals that using ‘normal’ to describe hair or skin makes most people feel excluded,” as mentioned in a statement.
Meanwhile, President of Unilever’s beauty and personal care division, Sunny Jain, explained that they are committed to discussing “harmful norms and stereotypes and shaping a broader, far more inclusive definition of beauty” through their global reach and the “power to make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Unilever to Ban Photo-Editing on Marketing Campaigns
Aside from eliminating “normal” on all its packaging, the multinational conglomerate also announced that they would end the practice of digitally altering “a person’s body shape, size, proportion or skin color in its brand advertising.”
This also includes social media celebrities and influencers who the company pays to promote a particular product.
Following their decision to ban photo-enhancement across their ads, Unilever says that they will “increase the number of advertisements portraying people from diverse groups who are under-represented.”
This monumental step from the company sends a strong message that they are devoted to improving body positivity and inclusive beauty to its consumers.
Twitter has Mixed Stance Towards Unilever’s Bold Move
With this, social media have mixed reactions regarding Unilever’s recent move.
One user appears to agree with the brand’s recent change and wrote, “What’s “normal”? Unilever decides to stop using the word. Good start. Let’s keep going.”
On the other hand, an individual pointed out that removing “normal” from its marketing is unnecessary.
“According to Unilever, the word “Normal” is offensive to some, and we aren’t supposed to use it.”

Just because summers in New York weren’t as brutal as those in Louisiana, it didn’t mean they were pleasant by any stretch of the imagination. The sun’s reflection from the windows on buildings made Maggie feel like an ant that was about to be set on fire beneath a gigantic magnifying glass. Not bothering with makeup or anything aside from deodorant and sunglasses, she’d yanked her hair back into a ponytail with an obnoxious, electric blue scrunchie and set out for the day.
She’d been running errands all morning—going to the pharmacy to refill her prescription, picking up groceries at the farmer’s market, now she was on her way to some unfamiliar location with a pair of boxing gloves from Bucky’s apartment that he’d asked her to bring along.
Walking down the street, she could feel the thin top that she’d thrown on that morning, sticking to her skin—she was counting down the minutes until she could go home and shower. The address that her phone had taken her to, had a little, nondescript door with a pair of boxing gloves and hours of business printed on the frosted glass. Down a steep, narrow stairwell, she heard dull thuds and occasional grunts as punches were landed and doled out.
Finally, the stairway opened into a massive room with a handful of separate boxing rings that were all occupied. Suddenly, she felt incredibly out of place with her flowery shirt and paper bag waist shorts. It was a bunch of men, her age and maybe a little older, that were boxing with one another with thick gloves and mouth guards to prevent any teeth from going flying following a particularly nasty punch.
If this was some kind of fight club, she was pretty certain that Bucky was about to be kicked out since he’d given her the address freely. Wasn’t the first rule not to talk about it? Regardless, he probably hadn’t seen it and she made a mental note to introduce him to it at some point.
Scanning the room, her eyes landed on a familiar silhouette and an involuntary smile found its way on to her lips. His cropped hair was mussed, and the back of his too-tight, gray t-shirt was covered in sweat. She could feel curious eyes on her, silently questioning her presence but she was only looking at him, “Bucky!”
At the bell-like voice he knew so well, Bucky turned from where he was ducking beneath the ropes to exit a ring and shot her a smile, “Hey.” Accepting the gloves that she offered, he eagerly undid the Velcro straps of the ones that were still on his hands, “Thanks.”
“No problem.” Crossing her arms, she looked around the room. It really did feel like some underground fighting ring but the young woman sitting behind a welcome desk and reading a magazine indicated otherwise; it was just a dive-y, little gym. Tarnished pipes were exposed against the cinderblock walls and there was an unpleasant, stale smell that only came with age. “I didn’t know you boxed.”
With a shrug, he tossed the gloves that he’d been wearing into his open duffle bag that rested on a little metal bench, “Started it a few months back.”
“Maybe I’ll take it up too.” Maggie joked, finally looking back at him. In the recent weeks, she’d felt so restless. Time had taken its sweet time letting her emotions heal, but her body was doing fine, so she found herself missing all of the time that she’d spent with Natasha in the little gym at the compound. Forcing herself to ignore the reminder of her late best friend, she murmured quietly, “Looks fun.”
“Wanna go a round?” Raising an eyebrow, he took a long drink of water from the metal bottle that he’d brought along with him. Pointedly, she avoided looking at the way his Adam’s apple moved with the sip.
Chewing the inside of her cheek, she looked around the room at the men with big gloves and the punches they were throwing and shook her head, admitting, “I don’t know how.”
“Then we’ll spar like I know you can.” Bucky elbowed her gently and nodded towards the welcome desk. “C’mon.”
Less than five minutes later, Maggie had signed a release waiver and purchased a pair of hand wraps since hers had been lost in the destruction of the compound almost half a year before. It was an odd sense of déjà vu as she looped the fabric bandage around her wrists and knuckles to brace them for impact. It felt like tying a shoe, something so second-nature that she didn’t have to think twice about the ritual; it wasn’t that long ago that she’d done this same routine almost every single morning.
Only a year ago had she and Steve moved to the little house and, look where they’d found themselves. Tightening the more-cute-than-functional tennis shoes on her feet, she climbed into the ring. What kind of unfound confidence did she have? It had been months—and she was pretty certain that it wasn’t quite the same as riding a bike.
From across the ring, Bucky watched with a little smile as Maggie did a few static stretches. The last thing she needed was to pull a muscle and add to the embarrassment that she was certain she was about to face. It had been a while.
So petite, the shorter woman looked unassuming as she did a few little hops to psych herself up. Taking a deep breath, he nodded with an unhindered smile and held his arms wide, “Bring it on, peach.”
Rolling her eyes at the nickname that he’d come to favor in the past weeks since their stay at the little place in the Tennessee mountains, Maggie moved. He wasn’t expecting the way that she ducked out of his arm’s reach as he charged forward, spinning like a trained dancer as she got behind him. Even after all this time, it was like she could still hear Natasha’s raspy voice instructing her with each swing and step.
The few steps that gave her a running start were barely enough to give her the air she needed as she rebounded off of one of the taut ropes that reined them in and flung herself up on to his shoulders. Despite her attempts to force him forward to the ground so she could pin him, he was like an unmoving mountain. She cursed through clenched teeth; it was impossible to force him off balance.
“Sorry, doll.” She hadn’t even noticed the way that he’d gotten an arm under her leg before he was forcing it up. Off-balance, she let out a short yelp as she braced herself on the ground, vaulting herself away in a back handspring to try and get some distance between them.
Hands shaking from the adrenaline that was pumping through her, Maggie’s words held no malice as she shot back, “Fuck you, Barnes.”
“It’s Barnes now, huh?” He grunted, blocking her jabs with an annoying amount of ease as she got closer, lulling him into false sense of security as she allowed him to think she was predictable. “You can do better than—”
His words were cut off by a swift, roundhouse kick to his center mass that forced the air from his lungs as he grunted, doubling over from the surprise assault. For someone so small, she held some power than he hadn’t been on the receiving end of before. Spinning back to face him and landing with bent knees to absorb some of the shock, Maggie’s grin was brilliant as she innocently asked, “Can do better than what, Barnes? Cat got your tongue?”
Blocking each swipe he made, she was almost laughing as they went around and around the ring. An unexpected sweep of his leg threw her off balance. It was like the world moved in slow motion, before she could brace herself for impact, she was yanked back against his firm chest. His right forearm was wrapped around her neck, taking her breath away.
The way the air caught in her throat was impossible for him to miss but before he could tease her, she squirmed against him. That feeling was familiar in the worst way, and his stomach lurched. A cold bead of sweat ran down his spine; he’d been in this position far too many times and all of them had been spent bringing about someone’s last moments. Suddenly, all he could picture was Maggie with a pale white face, her nails desperately clawing at a silver arm as he refused to release her with a dead look behind his eyes.
Blood running cold, Bucky unwound his arm and all but shoved her away with a low, “Yield.”
Head spinning, Maggie’s brows were drawn together as she was pushed away. Stumbling forward on unsteady legs, she regained her balance and her breath easily. Just a second ago, she was evaluating any way to regain the upper hand and suddenly he was several feet away with a clenched jaw as the fight ended. Frowning, she gave a short nod to acknowledge his surrender—had she done something to upset him?
She certainly hadn’t done anything to make him yield and release her; it wasn’t as if she’d tapped out or given him an elbow to the solar plexus or stepped on his foot…or bit his arm, which she may have done once or twice when she and Steve would spar. There’d been no reason for him to surrender yet he was already undoing his wraps to put them back in his bag while she was left standing in the dimly lit ring, dumbfounded.
Bucky wasn’t as good at hiding his emotions behind his eyes as he’d once been. Even from a few feet away, it was like she could see the thoughts that raced through his mind. He was freaking out and she was left out in the cold, wondering where they’d gone wrong. Was this how he felt when she’d have those silent moments when she was reminded too much of Steve or Natasha or Tony?
What could she do to help?
The walk back to their building was quiet aside from the low hum of everyone else on the streets, laughing and talking as the lazy, hazy summer afternoon began to fade into the evening. The journey was only seven blocks long, but it felt longer as he stayed silent, and she fought to figure out where they’d gone wrong. Each time she recounted the little sparring session, she came up empty-handed.
“What happened?”
Maggie hadn’t spoken the entire walk home—then again, neither had he, as he constantly questioned whether he had upset her or even scared her. Had he restrained her too tightly? He recalled the way her wrist had bruised after he’d grabbed it that morning when they woke on her couch; it had gone through the sequence of a rainbow from an irritated red to a deep, purple blue, before fading from an ugly yellow green into nothingness. The mere thought of a ring around her neck following the same colorful pattern made him nauseous.
He looked up from the stained sidewalk when she finally spoke, “What?”
“Back there.” Nodding in the vague direction from whence they’d came, she clarified with crossed arms as she looked ahead, navigating the busy sidewalk. It seemed as though everyone had decided to stay outdoors on the midsummer day. “Why’d you yield? I didn’t tap out.”
Hands deep in his pockets, Bucky gave a half-shrug as he gruffly admitted with a half-truth, “Didn’t want to hurt you.”
Frowning, she countered, “I could have handled it; I was just trying to figure out how to get out of the hold.” The more that she thought about, the more irritated she became. With a huff, she started, “I know my limits—”
“Maggie.”
Ignoring his interruption, she forged ahead, “You have to trust me. I promise, I’m—”
“You never know when to stop, do you?” Stopping in his tracks, Bucky’s words weren’t mean, just tired. With a sigh, he added, “It’s not you that I don’t trust.”
Brow furrowed, Maggie stopped short beside him, “What?”
“Nothing.” Shaking his head, he resumed their journey.
Watching as he walked a few steps ahead of her, she broke into a mild jog to catch back up with him, countering with a slight annoyance, “You can’t just say that and then say ‘nothing,’ James.” Falling into step beside him, she kept her voice soft so only he could hear her despite everyone that surrounded them, “Talk to me, please. We’re friends, and friends…talk.”
Countless times before, she’d confided in him. When she’d spoken about her fear of spaceships in the dark night, when she’d asked him if Steve would have stayed if she’d given him a different answer to an important question, when she’d asked him to run away with her. After all that she’d been through, how was her heart still wide open?
How could he open his to her? Maybe Maggie didn’t know every detail there was to know about his life, but she knew him. It was an olive branch; a way to let her know that he trusted her as much as she trusted him.
“In Wakanda, they figured out how to,” Trailing off with a sigh, Bucky searched for any other word that sounded a little more human but came up empty-handed before continuing lowly, “De-program me.” A sad, resigned laugh was exhaled through his nose, “They got rid of everything that Hydra put inside my head but—I don’t know. Sometimes I’m afraid it’s not completely gone.” Shaking his head, he admitted quietly as he met her eyes, “I just—if it came back and I hurt you—”
“Hey,” The intensity behind his gaze made her chest tight and she slipped her hand into his as they walked together, giving it a soft squeeze, “It’s not going to come back.” Steve had told her about Wakanda; the technology, what they’d done for Bucky, the battle. They wouldn’t have told him that he was free if he wasn’t. She knew what that was like, not being able to trust your own head—maybe not to the same extent, but she knew the constant fear of questioning every thought that ran through her mind.
Squeezing his hand, she shook her head, “You’re not him anymore. You’re you, you’re just…Bucky.”
“I don’t want to hurt you.” Shaking his head, he returned his eyes to the sidewalk.
“You won’t.” Tugging him to the side by his hand, out of the traffic of the footpath, Maggie had to tilt her head back to meet his eyes. “Promise me something.”
The last time she’d said those words, it had been to Steve on the last night of the life that she used to know. It felt so far away that it almost didn’t seem to matter anymore—he wasn’t coming back, he was gone.
But Bucky wasn’t.
He was still in front of her, warm and real and she wouldn’t take that for granted. And she wouldn’t let him hurt the same way that she did. Taking a breath, not allowing him to disagree, she continued quickly, “Promise that you’ll tell me if you ever feel like him again because I swear, it’s not real.” Remembering what he’d said on the roof months ago, she murmured, “You don’t have to go through everything alone, either.”
“Okay.” With the choked word, his eyes were tender as he looked down at her; bare-faced, beautiful, and far kinder than he felt like he deserved. He didn’t cry—he never did, but he didn’t know if anyone ever cared so deeply for him before. As she held out her pinky finger, a tiny smile broke on his lips as he hooked his with hers. “I promise.”
“Good.” Nodding with a matching, secret smile, Maggie finally released his finger. Continuing down the sidewalk to their building, she broke the moment and teased quietly, “You sure you didn’t actually give up because you were scared you were gonna get beat by a girl?”
Throwing an arm over her shoulder, he leaned down to whisper in her ear playfully, “Don’t make me bend you over my knee, doll.”
Grinning, Maggie gave him a sidelong glance, “That a threat or a promise?”

Bilbo Baggins was going on a journey, but the rest of the movie’s plot seemed to go in one of Maggie’s ears and right out the other. Fantasy just wasn’t her preferred genre, but she’d suffer through the almost three-hour film in silence for Bucky’s sake; lord knew that he’d endured enough biographical dramas and historical romances for her enjoyment.
Since their mutual agreement to add benefits to their friendship, surprisingly, not much else had changed. They still had movie nights and did their shopping together, he’d come over and do laundry (tossing hers in as well, because why not?) while she made dinner and then they’d talk about their days. Now, it was all just interspersed with quickies in the kitchen or a few extra hours in bed—morning or evening, they weren’t picky.
Along with their arrangement, though, had come a lot more physical intimacy than she’d expected but she found that she wasn’t opposed to it; there was something that made her feel so warm and secure as she curled up on his lap (much to Alpine’s chagrin.) It had only been a few weeks that she’d spent learning his body, but Maggie had always been an excellent student.
When she’d do the thing with her tongue, it would almost make his knees buckle as his fingers tangled in her hair, when his thighs tensed as she rode him, she knew he was close, but it was also the small things, things that weren’t sexual, but just intimate. They were little moments that she noticed often, like the way his thumb would trace down her wrist before taking her hand or how he’d all but have her restrained against his body when they fell asleep together, holding her tightly like a child and their treasured stuffed animal.
One of the other things that she’d discovered along the way was Bucky’s complete, blissful relaxation as she played with his hair. At first, she thought it was just during sex or when they were making out; he’d hold her a little tighter or kiss her harder—but then she’d realized it when she’d ran her fingers through it and commented about how she liked the length and his eyes closed with a content, dreamy smile, and a muted hum.
There was something so sweet in the way that he melted into her touch so maybe she did it more often just to see the way he reacted. Her legs were stretched out on the chaise as Bucky laid on the couch, his head on her lap while he watched the television and Alpine resting comfortably on his stomach. Running her hands through the short strands of his hair, her nails lightly brushing over his scalp and putting him in a trance, her eyes were on him instead of the screen.
Her other hand that rested on his chest, feeling the comforting, steady rhythm of his heart, grazed over the pair of silver dog tags that he never removed. The only times that they weren’t around his neck were, occasionally, in bed and when he was in the shower—even then, he’d put them back on soon after waking or dressing.
Maggie never questioned it—old habits died hard. Carefully, she slipped her fingers beneath the pressed metal and turned it over in her hand, her thumb brushing over the raised number as she took note of them. It always made her uneasy, the way a person could be boiled down to just a number. Eight digits were meant to be an identifier, just a cog in a machine.
The number three that had been embossed first on the silver piece tugged at a string in the back of her mind; it was funny how things stuck around long after she thought she’d forgotten them. Phillip Hall had been something of a Second World War buff and so Maggie had seen more than her fair share of documentaries, and more than one had been about the draft that had been instituted during the war. Those numbers on the metal told a story: his unit, his location, and his status.
“It starts with a three…” Maggie’s voice was soft, her delicate brow furrowed as she pressed her finger over the number and let it stamp into her flesh before it slowly faded away.
After the scene he’d been watching ended, his eyes moved to her, “Hm?”
“Your dog tags, the serial number.” There was a pit in her stomach as she frowned, “Steve never told me you were conscripted.”
That’s why she remembered the three—she’d recalled that when she learned what it meant, it reminded her of some scarlet letter; telling those around the wearer that they weren’t present of their own volition. Steve’s had begun with a zero since he was commissioned but Bucky’s was different. Vaguely, she thought she recalled Steve telling her that Bucky had enlisted before he was able to join but perhaps not.
His jaw was set tightly as he looked up at her and her hand in his hair stilled. There wasn’t anger behind his eyes; it was almost some kind of anguish, a silent pain that she couldn’t understand as he contemplated what to say. At her concerned, inquisitive expression, he stared into her eyes as he finally admitted quietly, “Steve never knew.”
Gripping the metal tag tightly, she let out a long exhale as she computed Bucky’s words. It didn’t make sense. How could he have never known? Why wouldn’t he have told him? Why didn't Steve ever realize? From where his head was propped up on her thigh, he could see the way her knuckles were white as she held tight to the necklace. Shaking her head, Maggie started, “Bucky…”
As he spoke, it struck him that he’d never told anyone the truth before—not regarding this, at least. Not his parents or sister, or Steve or Sam, but for some reason he knew he could tell the woman who was touching him so tenderly. For some reason, she made him want to tell her.
“He thought I enlisted but…I’d just registered for the draft, and they called my number a few weeks later.” Sitting up slowly, taking her hand that was still gripping the tags like she wanted to rip them off of him and throw them far away, he let out a humorless breath of a laugh. “How could I tell him that I didn’t want to join up when that was all he wanted to do?”
There was never really a chance for Bucky to tell him anyway. Almost a full foot shorter than him, Steve’s courage fought but failed to outweigh any and all of his ailments, barring him from participating in the war efforts, but not Bucky. No, he was a red-blooded, healthy American male—that was all they wanted. And so, they got him.
Running a hand over his stubbly jaw, Bucky let out a sigh, “He wasn't even a hundred pounds soaking wet and he still wanted to fight more than any guy I trained with. I couldn't look at him and say I didn't want that…but I didn’t have to.” Swallowing a lump in his throat, he gave a shrug as his voice came out smaller than he expected, “I didn't have a choice.”
A choice. An option. A say. It had all been taken from him. Every path except for one had been cordoned off, forcing him to follow a road that had been paved with propaganda and ill intentions. It had led him into the belly of a beast that he never wanted to fight. Staring down at his hand that held hers, she felt warm tears prick at her eyes.
It hit her that that was only the first of many choices Bucky had been stripped off. When he’d been under Hydra’s control, he’d had none of his own. Somehow, he’d gone from one fight to another for decades as a pawn for some powerful institution that never cared about him, not really.
Maggie’s voice was whisper soft when she found it again, refusing to look up because she didn’t want him to know she was crying, though the quiver from her lip that bled into her words gave it away anyway, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Bucky murmured, his thumb rubbing the back of her hand. He’d had time to make peace with his past; there was nothing that could change it. Even if he went back in time, it wasn’t as if that baggage would get lost in transit—it would always be in his memory. All he could do was try to move forward.
“It’s not.” Shaking her head, Maggie finally looked up at him. His eyes traced over her face; it was always the same when she cried, the way her eyes would get glassy, and her nose and lips would get red. It just made him want to wrap her tightly in his arms, to take away the pain. As his eyes followed a tear down her cheek to where it slipped off the edge of her jaw, he could feel a pang in his chest; had anyone ever cried for him before?
A shuddering breath like a hurt child preceded her quiet statement, “It’s not fair.”
“It was a long time ago, Mags.” Cupping her cheek, the vibranium of his hand cooled her warm, red skin as his thumb brushed some of the tears away. The heartache in his expression wasn’t for himself—it was for her, for the pain she carried around like cinder-blocks strapped to her feet, concrete shoes dragging her under with no hope of resurfacing.
Sniffling, she started softly, “But you—”
“I’m okay.” Unable to stand it any longer, Bucky pulled her on to his lap and wrapped her tight in his arms; he didn’t give a shit if it was too hot, with the windows open as they prayed for a breeze to aid the ancient air conditioning unit. He had to hold her.
In his hundred years of living, he didn’t know if he’d ever met anyone aside from Maggie who took on the heartaches of everyone else and made them into their own. It was like some compounding pain that accumulated, filling her until it made her break. Perhaps his conscription had been unfair but so was that—so was everything that she’d been put through, before putting herself through everything else.
His forehead was pressed against her temple as she rested against him, playing with her hands on her lap as he murmured quietly into her ear, “You care so much for everyone else. Why can’t you let someone do the same for you?”
His question reminded her of something Steve had asked her years before; why did she disregard herself in favor of everyone else? If she wouldn’t neglect someone else’s feelings, why did she do it to her own? Maybe it was arrogant, to believe that she could handle more than everyone else or to think that she knew better because she ignored what her heart said in favor of what her brain told her was right. Maybe it was because it was easier to care for others than accept care for herself.
Five years gone, and she still didn’t have an answer, so she just admitted softly with the barest note of defeat, “I don’t know.”

What would being a high schooler in Gotham be like?
You wake up to the sound of a limo driving past your house, an old man taking a small Middle Eastern boy to school. You brush your teeth and put on your vintage Gotham Knights jersey in hopes of impressing your crush in math class. You make yourself a bowl of cereal as your parents and siblings rush to get ready for work and school. You refill the dog’s bowl and feed the fish before you leave.
As you wait at the bus stop, you casually kick aside a batarang that someone left behind. And you curse the bus for being late again because the city can fund a bat signal but can’t fix a couple damn potholes. When the bus does arrive, the seats are almost all filled, so you’re stuck with the cracked leather one that has old gum stuck to it. Again. You put on your headphones and listen to your favorite song as the Wayne Enterprises building passes by in a haze, like most things on an unremarkable Tuesday. You daydream of what it’d be like to run somewhere else—Metropolis, Central City, perhaps Khandaq.
The bus jerks to a stop in front of your school and kids shove and shuffle to get out. The bus driver grumbles under his breath about hating his job. You don’t blame him. Some kid accidentally steps on the back of your heel as you enter Gotham High’s front doors.
You put your things in your locker. Your best friend frantically asks you for homework answers. They couldn’t concentrate last night because Nightwing and Killer Croc were duking it out on their block. You hand your friend the worksheet; they’d do the same for you too. “Just give it back before fourth period,” you say.
Your eyes lock with your crush’s in class as neither of you two listened to your science teacher’s monotonous lecture on the molecular composition of fear gas. You wish your crush was your lab partner, but instead you’re stuck with this girl named Stephanie, who ditches you halfway through the lab to call her boyfriend in the bathroom.
You take a nap in second period, because who even cares about classic literature anyway? Plus, you missed out on valuable sleep last night when your kid sister came to your room after having another Joker nightmare. The teacher bangs a book on your desk to wake you up. You keep your head ducked down while your classmates laugh at you. One of your friends shoots you a sympathetic smile from behind his copy of Hamlet.
You get your homework back during lunch, along with an “I owe you one” from your bestie. You push your maggot-infested school lunch away as you and the three or four other people at your table engage in typical conversation. Though, you have to admit, things got rather heated when asked to choose between a date with Red Robin or Spoiler. You don’t notice Stephanie Brown overhearing and looking offended when you chose Red Robin.
Third period after lunch is interrupted by a villain emergency drill. The teachers boredly go over what to do in case of the Riddler, Penguin, etc. Half the kids aren’t paying attention. You find these Gothamite maniacs more of a nuisance than objects of fear—they’re making you miss time on your favorite class to go over procedures.
You suppose the drill earlier is a good thing, because an actual villain crashes your fourth period class. The procedure tells you to leave all bags behind and head to the predetermined safe location, but like hell are you leaving your $1,200 laptop and your favorite Harry Potter book. So you take your stuff to the safe place and wait it out. You can hear the Batman’s gruff interactions with whoever the clown of this week is. But the person you like is visibly shaking from fear. You don’t blame them; they moved here from Coast City under a month ago.
So you awkwardly scoot across the hard floor and lay a comforting hand over theirs. You can’t speak, for the bad guy might hear and find you. But you swipe the tears away from their cheek with your thumb and look them in the eye. It’s a silent reassurance. They give you a soft smile. And boy, do you get lost in every feature. The way their hair perfectly frames their face, and irises swirling with color and quirks like tiny freckles or scars. For a moment, you forget about the battle raging outside.
The GCPD gives the all clear for people to come out. One wall off the school is missing, reduced to a pile of brick. Holes poke through the ceiling, letting that East Coast rain pour in. (The school district won’t be happy.) You notice you’re still holding your classmate’s hand. You awkwardly let go and blush nervously. Did the place suddenly get hot? And why are you so sweaty? You’re not even a hundred percent sure if you’re wearing deodorant. What if they find you gross and never want to see you again?
But your worries are quelled when they open up an umbrella and offer to share it with you. In the background, your friends give you encouraging smiles all around. You text your mom, telling her that you’re okay. Your dad leaves his job at the Gotham Gazette to pick you up. You and your crush trade numbers before you leave.
Your mom’s working late again on a Wayne Enterprises marketing project, so your dad whips up some chili to eat. When the rain lets up, you take your dog for a walk. Past Crime Alley, take a left at the graveyard, and stop by to say hi to your older brother working part-time at the arcade. It’s routine. Nothing spectacular.
At dinner, your sister talks on and on about her day at Gotham Academy. Her eyes sparkle with pride when she talks about the baking soda volcano she made, but dulls when she talks about this Damian boy who called her a “simpleminded imbecile” for it. You’re rightfully ticked off. No one can harass your sister but you. You actively remind yourself that, no, you can’t throw hands with a ten-year-old. But that spark is back when she talks about this Jon kid a little too much. Again, you can’t throw hands with children.
As you brush your teeth that night, your phone goes off. You almost choke on your toothpaste when you check the text. Your crush asks if you wanna go for ice cream sometime this week. You respond with a “yes” almost too quickly. Immediately after, you text your friends in a group chat with messages in all caps. The conversation quickly devolves into memes.
Your brother knocks on the bathroom door and tells you to get out. You quickly finish and let him use it—anyone who smells like nacho cheese needs it more than you do. You alternate between homework and texting until it’s time for bed. You crawl under the covers and turn off the lights, ignoring what sounds like the Red Hood’s gunshots. You fall asleep with a small smile on your face as pleasant dreams dance through your head.
Vigilantes and villains be damned. You have better things to do with your life.

Dezeen Awards 2021 sustainability longlist announced
The longlist for the Dezeen Awards 2021 sustainability categories has been revealed, with 75 projects selected across three sustainability categories.
All longlisted projects are listed below, each with a link to a dedicated page on the Dezeen Awards website where you can find more information about each one.

The architecture longlist, interiors longlist, design longlist, studio longlist and media longlist have already been published.
This year Dezeen Awards has introduced new Dezeen Awards prizes for sustainable architecture, interiors and design. Sponsored by Dodds and Shute, these awards will go to projects that strive to reduce their impact on the planet.
The Resurface Table by Norwegian Trash, which is longlisted in the Dezeen Awards 2021 sustainable design category
Longlisted projects and studios have been selected from over 4,700 entries from 87 countries for the fourth edition of our awards programme, which celebrates the world's best architecture, interiors and design, as well as studios and individuals producing the most outstanding work.

The next stage of Dezeen Awards 2021 will see all longlisted projects assessed by our panel of 75 industry-leading professionals including
The judges will determine which studios feature on the shortlists, which will be announced in September. A further round of judging by our master jury will determine the category winners, which will be announced in November.

2020 Vanity Clean Out
I always try to clean out my vanity areas (places where I would keep my skincare, makeup, body care, & hair care products). This year I was a little late. I’ve had this stored in a bag for a really long time I just never got around to writing this up and taking pictures, because these posts tend to be long as I do like to talk a bit about them and the reason why I’m discarding them. Going forward, I would be adding these to my empties and clearing whatever I don’t want every month rather than doing it yearly.
HAIR CARE
1. Chi Silk Infusion (12oz / 300ml) Honestly, I don’t style my hair with heat tools that often enough to be using this. I’ve had this in my stash for a really long time. It does break my heart that I’m wasting this product since it’s practically still full. I would give this away but I’ve had this for so many years and there’s some weird sediments on the bottom that I don’t feel comfortable giving it away.
2. Aveda smooth infusion style-prep smoother (3.4oz / 100ml) I got this when I went and got a haircut at the Aveda school, which was a long time ago. Honestly, I didn’t find that it did much for my hair. There’s only a little left but I just don’t really reach for it.
3. Aveda invati scalp revitalizer (0.34oz / 10ml) I got this for free with a shampoo and conditioner. I’m not sure if it really did anything for my scalp and there was a strong herbal scent to it, which I’m not a big fan of. This product was also another that I didn’t reach for. There is only a little left but it is a very old sample.
SKIN CARE
4. Huxley Secret of Sahara Sleep Mask; Good Night (30g / 1.06oz) Honestly, I’m not a big fan of sleeping masks. I believe this one you can also use it as a moisturizer as well. I didn’t really like it, but packaging and product consistency are on point. I’ve only used it about 1-3 times, before it expired.
5. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Hydrating Toner (15ml) I tried using this but I can’t get past the scent of this. It does smell very natural, but strong as well. I’m going to keep the bottle as it’s glass and will be nice for travels. I also found the formulation sticky/oily as well. It does say to shake it before use each time.
6. Frienvita Peeling N Deadcell Sauna Godness Pad These were my worst purchase ever. I did bring a few of these on one of my travels but it was horrible. The pad fell apart so easily and the rice/ exfoliation product was so lumpy that it was super hard to spread, yet alone exfoliate with.
BODY CARE
7. The Face Shop smile foot Relaxing Patch These are amazing when your legs or feet are sore. I’m only getting rid of these because they have expired since 2018 and have lost its effectiveness. I did try them prior to putting it in my dispose bin.
8. Miniso Winter Lovers Hand Cream: Sweet Orange (0.7oz / 20g) I bought this on a whim since the store was closing and had a sale. The pack did come with 3 and I do know that I have used one up not sure about the second one. This one does smell pretty good but the formulation is very bad. It leaves a slight stickiness with a powdery residue. Also when I rub my hands I’m just rubbing the dirt and the cream itself off.
9. LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant: Vanilly Summer (57g / 2oz) This was my favourite deodorant for a long time. I really like the round shape as I never feel the plastic hitting my skin compared to the typical oval ones. I love the scent of this, this was a limited edition scent. This is just really old to the point that the actually product falls out now, plus the scent is no longer as strong as it was before. I’m a little sad that Sephora no longer carries this brand. I have also tried the Vanilla Passionfruit which is another one of my favourite scents.
10. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Liquid Crystal Deodorant: Lemongrass (60ml) I wasn’t a big fan of this. I didn’t like how grainy it felt. And like a lot of their products there is a strong scent. Not a big fan of liquid deodorants.
MAKEUP
11. Skin Food Pearl Creamy Under Eye Pencil This was one of the first ever eye product that I ever bought. I loved how creamy it was and the color pay off was excellent. I wished they still had this. I wasn’t able to find it when I went back in 2018. I have found that Skin Food seemed to be fading away in Korea and on the market.
12. LABIOTTE Wine Angle Mascara 02 Volume Fixer I wanted a mascara that would help with volume. I found that this one did give me volume but when I bat my eyes the product would transfer. I would not get this again. Packaging is very cute though.
13. The Face Shop Make Me Star waterproof gel liner 02 I didn’t really use this that much. Thought I would just have it on hand if I ever wanted to line my eyes. This has now become hard/ dried.
14. the Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer 01 I really liked using this concealer, but nowadays I just use my cushions as concealer as well. This one is just old and has separated now.
15. e.l.f Powder Brush This was my favourite brush. The handle actually came off, I did repair it but then it came off again. Hence I’m calling it quits for this brush now because I can always get another one since it’s inexpensive, but for now I will be using what is in my stash.
16. IOPE Air Cushion XP N21 Ice Vanilla I bought this on a whim and to test it out. This cushion is very old, back when cushions just started to become popular. Honestly, this was too light for my skin and felt very heavy, but gave a very dewy finish. I’m actually getting rid of the compact and a refill that I never opened. This cushion was quite expensive at the time like $40-50 CAD for a university student.
17. Laniege BB Cushion Light This was my first cushion. I’ve actually used. I did finish it, I just kept the case which I am now getting rid of.
18. moonshot Micro Correctfit Cushion 201 Beige This cushion was okay I still prefer the Microfit version. But the compact of this one is so pretty, sadly I dropped it on the ground and it’s broken. Hence, I’m discarding it. I did finish the product.
19. Mamonde Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid #21 Ivory This cushion was different in that it had a mesh part instead of a sponge. Coverage was high but I found it a bit cakey on my skin and heavy. I also found that it accentuated my dry areas.
20. Tarte energy LipSurgence skintuative lip tint I believe I got this through Sephora Birthday gifts. This is super old, hence why I’m discarding it. I loved this as it gave my lips the perfect amount of color and shine. Too bad they no longer have this. I was going to purchase/ find something similar but I have bought so many lip products over the years that I will have to hold off for now.
