60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - C. Baker 3rd Review

Doctor In Distress - Behind the Scenes

Really, there was never any other choice for this category, was there?

So during 1985 the BBC placed Doctor Who under 'hiatus' for 18 months, derailing plans for season 23 that were already in pre-production. Citing falling ratings as their excuse.

In reality, Michael Grade, then head of BBC drama, personally hated the show and science fiction in general, and wanted to cancel the series outright.

This was met with massive backlash.

We're talking petitions, media coverage, and a even a protest song!

Fans, cast, and crew banded together to make a charity album in protest of the hiatus. Sales were donated to cancer research, and Reeltime productions recorded the music video using an abridged version of the song.

Neither the song nor the video did very well.

The BBC refused to play it on the radio and critics panned the album. Nowadays those involved express regret and cringe over the whole ordeal, but honestly, it's not a bad song.

The bones of a good electric pop song are there.

Hans Zimmer, yes that Hans Zimmer, the Oscar winning composer, was involved in the arrangement. And he apparently played the keyboard/synth parts of the song himself.

The chorus is also catchy as heck and I dare you not to be humming it to yourself as you go about your day.

What problems the song does have are hard to ignore though.

While I like the chorus just fine, the versus are, well, stilted. Granted, I don't know how you could make a song detailing the history of the series and it's current corporate politics without making it sound lame, but nevertheless it's not the song's high point.

Second, the guest performers are decent, but it's clear that the none of the Doctor Who cast are professional singers themselves. Some of them are little pitchy, or speak-sings their lines, and I'm not sure why another take wasn't recorded or used.

Despite the protest's lukewarm response, Grade did relent and allowed the show to return... Albeit with reduced episodes and several 'notes' on how to improve the series.... more on that later.

The consequence of this was a complete rewrite if season 23, and the eventual firing of Colin Baker at the end of that season. (Rumor also has it that Grade was dating Colin's ex-wife at the time... so make of that what you will)

I'll no doubt will be talking about the behind the scene's troubles a little more as we go along, but for now I'm putting the instrumental version of Doctor in Distress in my playlist. ;)

Doctor Who: Classic era spin-offs, low-res pixel style!

Continuing my big series of pixel arts of the Doctor Who universe, here’s a selection of the spin-offs that evolved from Classic characters and situations. A lot of characters are lacking in visual reference material so I had to scour book/audio covers, promotional art, and occasionally fanart (especially from Paul Hanley, again). It was fun! Of course there’re many more spin-offs I didn’t cover, so sorry to Graceless, Big Finish’s Charlotte Pollard and other companion works, various Dalek and Cybermen audios and comics, other BBV and Reeltime video and audio productions, Kaldor City, other UNIT stories, Alan Moore’s Special Executive characters, Olive Hawthorne, The Forge, etc, etc. (And don’t worry, modern spin-offs will be coming later!)

9: Faction Paradox spun off from the Eighth Doctor Adventures novels into its own franchise of prose and audios. Cousin Justine, Cousin Eliza, and Lolita from the two audio series, Compassion/Laura Tobin (who got her own prose series), Sabbath, Chris Cwej after regeneration/Cwej-Plus, Isobel/Scarlette (as seen in the comics), Miranda Dawkins (a tangentially related EDA character who got her own comic series).

TWO GREAT NEW TITLES TO BE LAUNCHED AT WHOOVERVILLE THIS AUGUST!

Reeltime will be attending Whooverville this August and we'll have two great new productions on our dealers table.

The latest DOCTOR ON DISPLAY release GREATEST SHOWS IN THE GALAXY will feature all the OTHER exhibitions inspired by classic DOCTOR WHO ... from right back in 1964 through to the new series launch in 2005 (plus a few later!).

SAFFRON is a six-part 16mm animation series created by PAUL THOMAS way back in the early 1990s. It starred SOPHIE ALDRED but was never broadcast. Here, for the first time, you can see the full remastered and combined with two documentaries telling its story!

Both will be on general release from 2nd September!

60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - Pertwee 12th Review

Auton 2: Sentinel - Spin-off

So the Auton trilogy were a series of ‘made for home video’ movies featuring the popular monsters from Doctor Who and UNIT.

They were produced by BBV Productions, and similar to Reeltime before them, they made their fortune on Doctor Who spin-offs that licensed everything but the titled character.

However, unlike Downtime, there’s no familiar faces to be seen here. All the characters involved are created for this trilogy of films, and to my knowledge, have not appeared anywhere else in the franchise.

In someways that gives the series a bit of freshness. The stories are all clearly set in the world of Doctor Who, what with UNIT and Autons, but because we don’t know the characters the story can play around more with moral ambiguity and intrigue, as the main character, Lockwood, who appears in all three films, may or may not be the hero.

The plot of this particular entry involves someone hijacking a UNIT truck and re-awaking the autons being transported within. UNIT begins to suspect that Lockwood might be behind the hijacking, but he’s also head of the division that investigates the Nestene specifically and is the world’s foremost expert on the matter. So they need to work with him while also investigating his background and any connections he may have with the autons.

Enter in the Natasha, a ‘scientific adviser’ who has secrets of her own, sent to shadow Lockwood and help him defeat the Autons... assuming he isn’t one of them.  

That’s the most interesting bit of the plot. The rest is typical Doctor Who tropes, with soldiers vs alien monsters, a brainwashed cult that’s duped into helping the aliens, poorly edited death scenes, ect.

There’s some better special effects, like a CGI monster that still holds up better than some blockbuster CGI of the era, but overall the plot is a little... well derivative. And despite the actors giving it their all, I don’t know if the emotional beats really work for me.

Overall I prefer the first film, with it’s more claustrophobic base under siege set up and its smaller, yet more focused, cast. 

But that’s a personal taste thing. Many fans prefer this second entry for it’s more ambitious effects, location shooting, and layered plot.

Either way, if you’re a Doctor Who fan, these three films maybe something worth checking out.

Happy Birthday Sophie Aldred!

Sophie Aldred (born 20 August 1962) portrayed Ace in the original television series from Dragonfire to Survival, and reprised the role for Dimensions in Time and audio stories produced by Big Finish. Aldred also had a part in the 1998 Doctor Who spin-off Mindgame. She was born in Greenwich and raised in Blackheath, London. She shares her birthday with her co-star, Sylvester McCoy, who is 19 years her senior, and Anthony Ainley.

Sophie attended Blackheath High School and studied drama at the University of Manchester before embarking on a career in children's theatre. In 1987, while she was working back chorus on Fiddler on the Roof, she was cast as Ace. The Doctor found Ace serving milkshakes on Iceworld in the story Dragonfire, at the end of which she joined the Doctor on his travels. Several stories (Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric, and Survival) explored her character to an extent that previous companion characters had not seen.

Before and since Doctor Who, Aldred has had a varied and busy television career, particularly in children's programming, where she has presented educational programmes such as Corners, Melvin and Maureen's Music-a-grams and the long-running BBC series Words and Pictures. She has performed on radio and in the theatre. She has also reprised her role as Ace in the charity special "Dimensions in Time" and continues to perform the role in Doctor Who audio plays produced by Big Finish Productions.

She co-wrote the hardback reference book, Ace! The Inside Story of the End of an Era with Mike Tucker, published by Virgin Publishing in 1996. She also edited a special issue of Doctor Who Magazine (Issue 255). 

Beginning in 2012, Aldred provided the lead voiceover role in the animated series Tree Fu Tom; her co-star for the first series was David Tennant.

Sophie Aldred married Vince Henderson on 12 July 1997. They have two sons, Adam and William.
