8 Features to Focus On When Selecting HRMS in 2025
In 2025, as workplaces continue to evolve with technological advancements and hybrid work models, selecting the right Human Resource Management System (HRMS) is crucial for business success. The right HRMS not only streamlines HR processes but also enhances employee satisfaction and boosts organizational efficiency. Here are eight essential features to prioritize when selecting an HRMS for your organization.
1. Recruitment and Onboarding
Efficient recruitment and seamless onboarding are vital for attracting and retaining top talent. A robust HRMS should:
Automate job posting and candidate screening.
Simplify interview scheduling and feedback management.
Provide a smooth onboarding experience with digital forms, document uploads, and task checklists. By digitizing these processes, HR teams can focus on building relationships and aligning new hires with company culture.
2. Employee Self-Service Portal
An employee self-service portal empowers your workforce by enabling:
Easy access to personal records, payslips, and tax documents.
Requests for leaves, updates to personal information, and benefit claims. This reduces dependency on HR teams for routine tasks, saving time for both employees and HR staff.
3. Attendance & Leave Management
Accurate tracking of attendance and leave is critical. A modern HRMS should:
Integrate with biometric systems or offer geo-tracking for remote employees.
Provide flexible leave policies and automated approvals.
Offer real-time attendance reports and leave balances to employees and managers. This ensures compliance, transparency, and fair resource allocation.
4. Payroll Management System
Payroll management is a core HR function, and errors can lead to employee dissatisfaction. Look for an HRMS that:
Automates salary calculations, tax deductions, and compliance.
Offers integration with attendance and leave data.
Supports multiple payment methods and provides detailed payslips. A reliable payroll module ensures timely and accurate compensation.
5. Training & Performance Management System
Continuous learning and performance evaluations drive organizational growth. Key capabilities include:
Creating and managing training modules and tracking employee progress.
Automating performance reviews with predefined metrics and feedback templates.
Linking performance outcomes to rewards, promotions, and career development plans. This motivates employees and aligns their goals with organizational objectives.
6. Employee Expense Management System
Managing employee expenses can be tedious without automation. A capable HRMS should:
Simplify expense submissions with mobile uploads and automated approvals.
Integrate with financial systems for reimbursements and policy compliance.
Generate detailed expense reports to monitor trends and budgets. This feature enhances financial transparency and reduces processing time.
7. Employee Information System
A centralized repository for employee data is a must-have. The HRMS should:
Maintain comprehensive records, including personal details, roles, performance history, and benefits.
Ensure data security and provide role-based access.
Offer quick search capabilities for efficient information retrieval. A well-organized database supports better decision-making and compliance management.
8. Offboarding Management System
An often-overlooked feature, offboarding is crucial for a smooth transition. A good HRMS should:
Handle resignation processes, final settlements, and exit interviews.
Automate clearance forms and asset return tracking.
Provide insights from exit data to improve retention strategies. Efficient offboarding safeguards your company’s reputation and leaves a positive impression on departing employees.
Choosing an HRMS in 2025 requires a focus on features that enhance both employee experience and operational efficiency. By prioritizing these eight features—from recruitment to offboarding—your organization can streamline processes, improve decision-making, and create a workplace that attracts and retains top talent. Make sure to evaluate vendors thoroughly to ensure the HRMS aligns with your specific business needs and growth plans.

I deleted the ask, but someone wrote one basically saying "why do you post reaction videos to Helluva Boss? Don't you know the show exploits its workers and they're overworked and get burned out?"
And, I mean, I love your energy, person who asked, definitely hold on to those values and speak up about this. But also, I am afraid I might have some bad news for you about literally the whole entire animation industry.
As near as I can make out from the sparse journalistic reporting that's been done on SpindleHorse -- and as a sidebar, please for the love of god read actual reporting about these things and not just callout posts and fandom discourse -- as near as I can make out, SpindleHorse as a studio is neither all that much better nor all that much worse than basically anywhere else in the industry on their level. It seems like it is (or was? Hazbin Hotel seems to be run differently) a studio mostly run by contracting people on a project-by-project basis, which leads to a crapton of turnover, and a huge need for organizing and onboarding, which according to the reporting I have read, the producers and freelancers have struggled to balance and manage properly, which has negatively impacted a number of the workers.
Top that with the usual catty, clique-based backbiting, sniping and poorly managed conflict resolution that's just kinda endemic in creative environments mostly staffed by twentysomethings and stressed out freelancers, and you have the recipe for a workplace where a lot of people are going to have a great time and feel creatively fulfilled, and a lot of people are going to come away feeling justifiably burnt the fuck out and exploited.
All of this is... not especially unusual for the animation industry, or indeed for any creative industry. Which is not to say that it is good, or that it should be allowed to be normal, or that it shouldn't be reported on and criticized (and please for the love of god support unionization efforts because that's the only thing that will actually address these kinds of systemic problems). It's just to say that if those kinds of issues are the line in the sand you draw where you refuse to engage with a studio's output...
Then, for starters, say goodbye to basically all of anime, because the Japanese animation industry is actively in a state of crisis trying to recruit new talent because its working conditions and pay are so astonishingly abysmal. And the horror stories that escape from that industry make the issues at SpindleHorse look like summer camp at times.
But you also have to say goodbye to a lot of American and European animation. Please do not imagine that Disney and its subcontractors, or that Nickelodeon or Warner Bros, are benevolent employers. They exploit their staff brutally and are currently trying to crush the labor value of animation with threats of generative AI being used to replace jobs. But those corporations also have extremely well-funded PR departments and the ability to silence employees with NDAs and threats of blackballing, so you don't get to hear as many of the horror stories as you might from a smaller independent studio that's less able to silence criticism by holding people's careers hostage.
All of this is to say that 1) it's valid and important to have criticism of both large and small-scale animation studios, and to keep the well-being and happiness of the workers higher in your priorities than the output of Products™.
And 2) if you're going to have a principle for what kinds of problems make a studio's output morally untouchable for you, and what kinds of problems you think should make a studio's output untouchable to other people, you do need to apply that principle consistently to the entire industry, and not just to the independent animation studio that happens to be surrounded by the internet's most inflammatory fandom discourse.
If you don't apply that principle consistently, maybe don't send reproachful messages to strangers scolding them for not living up to your standards, and even if you do apply that principle consistently, maybe still don't do that, because it's mostly quite annoying, and doesn't really do anything to support animation workers struggling for better working conditions.
The Animation Guild in the US is currently in the middle of a bargaining process with their industry, and they have a social media press kit as well as relevant talking points on their website which you can use to post in solidarity with the workers. If it comes to a full industry strike, consider donating to their strike funds to help them maintain pressure. Outside of the US, try and find out what (if any) local unions exist for animation workers, and maybe sign up to their mailing lists. They will let you know what kind of support they need from you.

It's Just Business, Baby: Workplace Conflict 1/4
The Recruiter/The salesman x Recruiter!fem reader Smut series

Summary: he saw no reason why they would want to hire you. He did just fine at the job! The higher-ups were stupid for even bringing you onboard, you had to be a liability. You were a walking enigma, a witch! He hated every little thing you did. So when he tells himself he’s following you so he could always be a step ahead of you, he doesn’t understand why after each meeting he’s left wanting to see you more.
Warnings: eventual smut (18+), stalking, the recruiter’s a warning in himself, kidnapping (reader is insane and kidnaps some people for fun who did her wrong), blood mention, violence, slapping ((list will change based on chapter))
Other Chapters: Overtime 2/4 , After Hours 3/4 , Professional Provocation 4/4

He’d like to think of himself as a level headed guy (he’s not) who can take orders from his boss well and can adapt in the workplace without issue (he can’t).
But when the big guy in charge hired you to join him in this odd recruiting job- he fucking hated it. He hated you.
He was the only one recruiting those low lives into the games and he did a fantastic job, there’s never been an issue! So why did they have to hire you?! Surely you were a threat to the organization. You hardly looked like you could hurt a fly let alone do the things that the job requires.
You were much smaller than him, always wearing a suit similar to his- though he noticed pretty soon upon meeting you that your jacked you wore was much more cinched than his, accentuating your waist. And that made him dislike you even more- is that why they hired you? They figured sex appeal would bring more to the games?!
And then you always had this sick and twisted smile on your face. It’s sickly sweet, like you can tell the future and plan ahead knowing what he’d say before he said it. You were always one step ahead of him. The worst part? You didn’t even seem to notice, or if you did you didn’t care. You paid him little to no attention. Only speaking to him to belittle him or to say some snarky remark in response to him belittling you.
Your eyes always seemed to be narrowed, like you were trying to solve everyone like a puzzle that was presented to you. You seemed to be observant, more so than the average person. He’s tried multiple times to sneak up on you, to try and stalk you from the shadows- yet you always spot him. He’s convinced you’ve adapted some ability of echolocation or something, there was no way you should be able to notice him half the time you do.
You were too complex, too aware of your surroundings, too quick on your feet. He was in competition. And he did not like competition.
Although you knew he greatly disliked you, you really had no idea of this inner battle he had. You didn’t think you were in a race or a competition at all, it didn’t matter to you. What did matter to you were his reactions. That’s the whole reason you continued to mess with him.
The first year you worked with him and the people behind the annual games, you were a complete enigma. He literally couldn’t figure you out. He was good at tracking people and digging up information, but you? Nothing. He was sure you’d be dumb enough to let your name slip in passing or even get a glimpse into your personal life. But nothing.
He tried to follow you home once, sticking to the shadows and moving silently. He knew you didn’t see him, he was sure of it. He managed to follow you from behind for nearly 45 minutes. He figured that’s why you were able to be so secretive- you lived so far away from where you two were normally stationed.
But as you begin to make random twists and turns, he begins to feel like you’re playing him- but you can’t be, he’s sure you never saw him. But when you rounded a corner and head into an alley way, him following after you only a few feet behind, he rounds the corner- and you’re gone. It was then he gets it, you probably didn’t live anywhere near where he followed you out to, you were simply just trailing him along in a god awful game of cat and mouse.
He screams, he’s agitated. He throws his briefcase against the metal trash can, kicking the bags of trash erratically in the alley way. He’s so enraged he doesn’t even realize you’re peeking out of a window of the building you snuck into. Giggling silently to yourself as you watch him throw a temper tantrum.
The next two years you worked for the games- it was the same fucking thing. He knew nothing. The only extra bit of information he had as the years passed was that you were bringing in more recruits to the game than he was.
He never had to worry about a ‘quota’ or worry about how many people join the game because of him; because they all joined when he offered them the brown card and promised them a chance for more money. All 456 players were recruited by him.
Now? With you in the picture? He had to compete. He had to work harder- something he hated having to do- to make sure he got more people to call and secure their spots in the game than you did.
But somehow. Some-fucking-how in the three years you’ve worked for the games- you’ve gotten more people to call in.
The first year, he had 227 people enter and you had 229. He called it beginners luck, only two more people- nothing he wanted to bother himself over. He already had to put all his attention on hating you- he couldn’t focus on losing to you by such a small difference.
The second year? He had 205, you had 251. Yeah, he was getting pissed. There was no way you were better than him. Who would even trust a girl like you to offer them a chance of a life time? Maybe it was because they thought you were a hooker. It was a surprise they called the number and when a sex-hotline didn’t pick up they didn’t just hang the phone up.
You did not care about numbers- you never kept track. You only found out that a log is kept detailing which recruiter got how many players to join when he made a snide comment the past year about how you ‘somehow’ got more players to join the game than he did. Sure, you knew you were quick- working down the list of names given to you by the anonymous higher-ups in rapid succession, but that’s just how you worked.
When you found out about his little competition, the one he seemingly made up by himself, you couldn’t help but laugh to yourself. It was somewhat endearing to seem him so worked up over some internal issue he had with being second best. He would put more effort into his recruitments- working over time to try and get to more people than you.
So of course you do work a bit faster than normal for the next time you’re given a list of names of the people you two were to scout out.
The third year, he came to the full realization that he hated you completely. With his entire being he loathed you. Your effort to annoy him paid off, you had gotten a whopping 306 people to join. To say he was enraged was an understatement- he could swear he would kill you only…. if it wouldn’t put his job on the line.
And to top it all off, he sill knew nothing about you aside from the fact you irked him to his very core. He wanted to find your weakness, use them against you. As much as he tried to find one, to hunt you down when you left work in hopes of catching you doing something he could use against you.
But he didn’t, you were more closed off than he was. And he despised you for it. He was supposed to know everything. And now that the head people decided to add another recruiter, that he adamantly swore they didn’t even need, he knew significantly less than he wanted, no, needed to.
You were a walking enigma. You seemed to just vanish into thin air as soon as your shift is over, you didn’t look like you could hold your own but he figured you had to be able to if you were hired, and you always had that dumb fucking smirk on your face.
He remembered when the first time when he actually saw you working. He was carrying a bag full of bread, making his way to a little side quest he decided to give himself. He figured maybe the break from constantly working to have the one up on you, he’d do something he enjoyed doing. And if that just so happened to be offering bread or lottery tickets to homeless people in some crude choice game, then that’s what he’d do. Anything to get his mind off you.
But no, you just had to be a pesky little parasite and show up everywhere he went.
Admittedly, you didn’t know he’d be passing through the park you’d be in- you were directed to go here by your boss to begin the recruitment process so the park is where you dutifully found yourself. You genuinely didn’t try to run into him- hell you enjoy keeping far from him, you couldn’t stand his attitude.
But when he steps through the gates of the park, leisurely strolling excited to begin his daily itinerary, he hears someone gasp and begin to shout. That’s not the normal sounds you’d hear in this park, he thinks. He stops in his track tilting his head as he listens harder.
It’s a almost rhythmic beat of a few sounds, a couple ‘thwaps’- like something light and sturdy hitting the cobblestone trail of the park , then the same shouting as before, and finally a resounding ‘smack’, all before the rhythm repeats.
There’s no fucking way, he thinks. His normal seething anger that he’s had since you joined the job returning full throttle. He knew the sounds he was hearing could be none other than you playing ddakji with some down on their luck civilian. His head is whipping around the park. He needs to find you.
He tells himself that he needs to see you work so he knows you’re not making a fool out of the games and their integrity. He needs to know you’re actually doing what you’re supposed to be doing- you’re a new employee, of course he needs to shadow you and scrutinize every movement you make, it’s what a good senior employee would do.
He’s following the sounds with a fury, quickly coming upon you and the lowlife gambling with you down a hill at the edge of the park. He calmly walks behind a tree, shielding himself from view. His eyes are trained on you like a hawk about to kill its prey.
He wants to say you’re weak, that you’re an excuse of a recruiter but when he sees the civilian lose, failing to flip your paper square, you don’t hold back. The corner or your lip curls up ever so slightly, the movement unnoticeable to anyone else but him. It was simply because he was so observant to the world around him as a whole.
Not because he would spend every moment he got to stare at you, memorizing every feature of your face and how it naturally rests.
Then your arm winds back, your palm connecting in an open handed slap that echos throughout the part. It was hard enough to knock the baseball cap off of the poor mans head, his face forced sideways with the intensity of the slap.
And then you settle back into a resting position. Almost like you never slapped the man at all. You just stood there, the same grin on your face that he despises and nod towards the man. “Would you like to play again.” To be honest, this was the most he has heard you speak, the job didn’t require you two to interact much- in fact there was rules in place to make sure you and him didn’t get close.
He was strangely fascinated by your voice. It was light, had a specific cadence to particular syllables that made your voice a temptation in itself. No wonder the man you were playing with was quick to agree to go again- like the man was under some sort of trance. And that pissed him off more.
He watched on from behind the tree, eyes narrowing visualizing the idea of you struggling under his grasp, hands holding your throat. He quickly shook his head from the idea- finding that it made heat rush to his cock.
He turns quickly on his heels, not wanting to look at you further. He was mad that you made him feel this way. It made him hate you more. You were a twisted little witch who was casting spells to make his dick hard- at least that’s what he told himself.
He also remembers a time when you had gotten off a train at his stop, catching him right as he handed the signature brown paper card to another unsuspecting victim. You’re walking tall, your eyes rimmed by smokey eyeshadow, and when you notice him- your brow quirked up.
He keeps his composure, the same smile he always has when interacting with ‘clients’ on his face though you can see the corner of his lip twitching, like he’s fighting himself not to scowl.
You hold up one of your hands in a move of mock defense, “No need for theatrics, just passing by to go to my station.” You hum with a grin that makes him want to choke you. Again, it’s the most he’s heard out of you in three years. You and your witch tactics. And then suddenly, all he can think about is fucking you until the cocky lilt to your voice is replaced by broken sobs.
To suppress these thoughts, he just becomes enraged. You can see the way his eye twitches, the way his smile that’s always plastered on his face falters into a scowl. And before he can even speak, you’re walking past him and down the subway-practically disappearing into the crowd.
The whole interaction pisses him off more when he manages to get a hold of your work itinerary, finding that your station for that day was no where near the stop you got off at. In fact, it was on the total opposite side of town. You genuinely just wanted to piss him off.
And it was working.
Every day he woke up his thoughts were plauged by his hatred of you. The way you smiled, the way you’d tilt your head when someone would talk to you- he knew you only did it to make people think like you cared to listen to their troubles. He knew you didn’t, you didn’t care at all- you just wanted to slip that card into their hands and have them call. Securing you another point in the imaginary game he was playing against you.
What made it even worse- the job you both had didn’t ride on how many people you called in. The people above you two simply kept track to make sure you were doing a decent enough job to stay working for them, there was no prize for getting more people and there was no punishment.
Yet he felt like he was being punished. Every day he would have to pass by you somehow. It was like the higher ups wanted to fuck with him. He would see you walking through the park on your way to the next subway station, catching you just as you board a subway car, you pass by him even when he wasn’t working somehow.
One day when you were both at an abandoned warehouse waiting for the days orders, he figured he’d finally say something. “I find you annoying.” He’d grumble out, fingers tapping against the handle of his brief case. “I’m aware.” You responded, it was such a simple answer yet the corner of your lip curled up ever so slightly.
In a second he’s dropping his briefcase and lunging forward. His hand is on your neck, squeezing relentlessly as he shoves you back against the concrete wall. Your hands instinctively reach up to grasp at his wrist, he’s surprised that your grip hurts him. Maybe you weren’t as weak as he first thought.
He expects you to be scared, to be begging for your life-but you’re not. Despite your face begging to turn red and your lips beginning to turn a light hue of blue- you just look at him with that same shit-eating smirk you always wore. “I could kill you right fucking now.” He growls, shoving you harder into the wall for emphasis.
You laugh, the sound only fueling his anger, his fingers tightening. “You won’t.” You answer, your eyebrow raised mockingly, “You kill me. They kill you.” You choke out, your grin still wide as ever even as the breath is beginning to be squeezed out of you. “‘N you’re too much of a good lap dog to go against the wishes of your owner.”
You spit the words out with a weak and breathless laugh. He’s seething, his jaw clenching as he grinds his teeth. But you’re right- he kills you, he’s dead. One of the first things he was told when you were hired was under no circumstances was he to harm his co-worker, or as they labeled it ‘partner’.
However, he would rather shove the barrel of a gun into the back of his mouth before he referred to you as his partner. He is also a model employee so just when you think you’re about to pass out, he releases his grip from your throat.
You gasp for air a couple times before you settle again, simply looking back over to him with your normal wicked grin. Your neck is already beginning to turn red, and in places purple- the outline of his fingers now bruised into your skin.
He would never admit it but the image does things to him that he can’t describe. “A little over kill don’t you think?” You ask in a monotone voice. And the feeling is gone, you ruined it. That fucking smart mouth of yours.
“Far from it.” He growls out, leaning down to grab his briefcase from the dusty floor. And then both your watches are buzzing. You check them in an eerily similar manner, looking down to check the orders received at the exact same time.
And you’re both departing, going to the assigned location that was sent to you. Your steps echo on the gravel of the abandoned warehouse his eyes twitching as he can tell your skipping. You never cease to add to his deep loathing of you.
Yet he can’t stop trying to investigate you. Somehow he managed to intercept your itinerary. It was a tedious task that he’s sure he could never do again unless he wanted to risk getting fired (executed). One of the big rules that was put in place when you were hired was the two of you were to never share schedules or orders you were given.
But he managed to snatch a paper that looked to be your schedule for the day. He kept it tucked into his suit pocket until he was finished with business for the day. His eyes dart to the time block of the time it was. Between the normal locations for recruiting, you had a large ‘meeting’ blocked out.
He quirks his eyebrow up, this wasn’t normal. He looks closer at the paper and scoffs, you must be getting sloppy. You’re not hiding from his as well. He can make out the indentations of writing that was on written on a piece of paper that previously laid atop the paper he stole.
In the shadow of your handwriting- even your handwriting was perfect, fuck he hated you- was a the time it was now and an address. He knew the place, an apartment building that was currently being constructed.
He’s making his way down there quickly, hoping he would be able to catch you doing whatever you were doing. And when he makes it to the address and begins to hear humming he’s ducking into the construction site, beginning to weave between concrete following the sound.
He comes to a large opening, it’s lit by candles and lanterns, there’s a round table with three chairs set up. In one chair was you, the other two were occupied by two men, tied up and gagged. You’re giggling to yourself, waving a revolver around as you speak.
“You two really are something, cryin’ and acting all scared.” You hiss, leaning over the table and pressing the gun to one of the males head, only laughing louder when the male flinches and cries harder. “I haven’t even done anything to you two! If anything I should be the one crying!” You say pointing to yourself with the gun. “You two were the ones who spiked my drink the other week. You guys were much more fun then- talked back more, acted all big and bad, made me think I might have a challenge.” You pout, quickly sitting up from the chair and beginning to circle the table.
Now your black haired co-worker that hates you but can’t stay away from you is watching on from the shadows. He’s captivated by what he sees, you were fucking insane it seemed- much like him. You had a crazed look in your eyes, a drastic difference from the usual stoic smirk you wore.
“You guys ever play Russian roulette?” You chirp out, circling the table and dragging the end of the revolver on the wood. He watches from behind a pillar as you load a bullet into the chamber.
He tells himself he has to leave, not because he can’t watch- no he wants nothing more than to watch, but all he can think about is how delicious you looked in your crazed murderous frenzy. The twisted smile, the oddly innocent voice despite having two grown men bound and gagged, the evil game he could hear going on in the room- it all made him want you.
And he can’t have that. He’s supposed to hate you. He closes his eyes and runs both his hands through his hair, trying to collect himself. He guesses he spaced out because two loud gun shots sound off. His eyes are snapping open. He’s moving to turn around but he’s caught off guard by you walking past him.
“You missed the best part.” You hum out as you continue to walk, briefcase in one hand and the other straightening out your blazer. “Thought you may have joined, what a shame.” You say, turning around and looking at him over your shoulder.
His eyes widen ever so slightly as you turn and begin to walk off- you knew he would follow you, you knew he’d find the indentations of your writing and you allowed him to get a hold of your schedule.
You were always one step ahead of you and he needed to change that. He needed to be the one in charge. Not you.

What an interesting topic. I’ve heard that a large percentage of employees cite their bosses as the reason they leave their jobs. What are some ways companies try to mitigate this?
They don't.
I can really only answer for my company, which cared about retention (of employees) a lot. Many companies do, because it costs much less to recruit/onboard/train as little as possible, and because it can be hard to get the work done without adequate staffing. I'd add that my company had one area in which staffing was a nation-wide crisis; also my company was in the public sector and was in the press a lot, which mean they cared about their image.
They still didn't do that much to ensure that people had good bosses. That has less to do with this company and more to do with the structure of business in capitalist society. This is a big reason HR is never going to be that helpful unless you've got a tiny company that, completely by luck, has mostly good folks.
A company isn't going to take a generalized point about folks leaving their job because they don't like their bosses as fact. Companies feel they are too diverse and the financial risk is too great to pour money into something if they don't have hard data, so the first step to retention is getting data. You would think exit interviews would be really informative, but those require a lot of time which equals staff which equals money. Some employers do them but mine would only do one if you asked, and then they did nothing with the info. This is because the company's mentality was "well, if you're leaving you're probably really dissatisfied and we don't want to hear about that." I know this makes no sense. But in general, not just in the business but in this society (formed by capitalism), the idea seems to be if you're dissatisfied it's your fault. Meanwhile the company is interested in data about why people stay; they figure if folks are satisfied, that's the company's fault and they want to keep doing the same so they can retain employees.
Our company had a huge employee satisfaction survey they did every year that included questions about employee opinions about the company, their colleagues, and their bosses. You get emails to remind you to take it and if you can't get time in the workday, bosses are supposed to allow time for it. Some problems with that are you still have to remember to take it; if you don't have time you have to ask a boss you might not like to get that time; some folks at my company literally had jobs that literally are life or death so it can be hard to take time to take a survey; the survey is only in English; the survey is only in the computer; the reminders are only in email. So you have to be a moderately good English speaker who regularly checks email and knows how to use a computer and gets regular access to a computer for the company to get your data about your satisfaction. As you can imagine, our most vulnerable employees often get missed.
If the survey showed that folks were really dissatisfied with a particular boss, that boss got put into a series of trainings. Training is good, but US businesses (and plenty of employees themselves) seemed to have latched onto the idea that training is the be-all, end-all of improvement. Many of us saw this in response to the discussions about EDI (equity, diversity, and inclusion) that came about in 2020; business promised to be anti-racist and had some EDI seminars to prove it, and that was all. Why is it like this? What is really needed to make bosses better bosses? And why isn't that being done?
When it comes to "why is it like this": recruiting and retaining good leaders is hard. The way someone becomes a boss in almost any organization is a) management likes them, and/or b) they were good at a job in a lower level or different department, or c) they come from the outside with a good resume and what sounds like good experience. But a lot of time, management likes people who aren't disruptive, and sometimes folks who aren't disruptive are the folks who are not thinking for themselves and not asking questions and doing everything the way they're told even when it doesn't make sense. That doesn't make a good leader. As for folks who are good at the lower level job in the hierarchy or in another department, they aren't always good at managing. It's a different skill set, but I've seen a lot of leaders and employees make this mistake. They think that that the folks who are great at the job should be promoted, and honestly that really doesn't make sense. And last but not least, folks who get hired from the outside are a complete crapshoot, because experience with leadership does not necessarily a good leader make.
As for what is needed to make bosses better bosses, imo what you would really need is someone embedded within the department who is managed by the boss and is doing the same work as the other employees, but also has the training and experience to evaluate what the boss is doing well and isn't doing well, and then also has the authority and buy-in to work with the boss so that the boss can shadow and learn the leadership skills they need. Then, if the boss can't improve, there would need to be the will within the org to fire or demote that boss, and often that will doesn't exist because recruiting bosses is so hard and the training is usually monumental.
Side note, what I'm describing is what consultants should do and normally don't. Consultants come in and ask a lot of questions and do focus groups and maybe some observations, but they are not in there doing the work understanding what it is like to live in this world, and without that I frankly find a lot of the work they do useless. That said, consultants are almost always hired to identify inefficiencies; they're not really there to make it a more satisfying job. Imo, the greatest efficiency is a satisfied worker, but it is hard to get the data to point that way, and again, companies only want data, and again, your dissatisfaction is your own fault.
Another side note, this is why unions are so great. Union stewards are folks who work for the company but can act as a union representative. This means they're embedded in the department and doing the work everyone does, but they can also at times step outside that role and carry the authority of an outside entity that does have some power to use against the employer. This is why all employees should have a union.
So, why aren't companies doing this? As you can imagine, hiring the ambassador to embed within a department, training them, paying them for their time--all of these are just too cost prohibitive to justify when they only thing you're getting out of it is employee satisfaction. It is also possible to improve employee satisfaction by paying employees more, which is in fact why I stayed in this job I hated as long as I did. I was getting paid so much that it just did not make sense to walk away without a firm plan in place. In the end, paying employees more costs less than ensuring they have a good boss.
I have lots more to say about this, but I've said a lot already, so if anyone has follow up questions, feel free to send more asks.

"ONBOARDING"
[A/N: Seriously guys, there is no reason why Alucard should be so hard to write XD. He (in cannon) is such a discordant, confusingly consistent mess, OMG. Though I suppose that’ll happen after centuries of consuming souls…Well, at least he’s found a job that he loves! Also, reader is female and American] [EDIT: Forgot to @thirstyforlulu 😅]
“B-by myself!?”
You were at a loss for words. Asset management, training, recruitment. For the latter, you weren’t even sure of the logistics behind that. How could you run an entire HR department by yourself!? The background of the elegant room, the somber undertones, and the echo of your voice did nothing to salve the already desperate disposition of your nerves. As the smoke from the cigar of the steely eyed woman across from you dissipated into the air, a naughty thought appeared:Maybe the reason she puffs on that foul-smelling bundle of herbs is because of the stick she keeps up her—Suddenly, you felt the advance of many tiny legs up your arm and instinctively moved to swat away the possible offender. Nothing…
"Is that a problem?"The woman said as another puff of smoke left her plump lips. The unyielding nature of her gaze pinned you to the spot. The way her blue eyes bore into yours and the enunciation of your name made it clear that she dared you to respond. You did not.The decision was already made for you. There was no getting out of this. "You are to ensure the proper conduct of all personnel under the employ of my organization. You will be solely responsible for the results of this endeavour, be it success or failure. If the conditions in which you will do so do not accommodate your skill, then consider yourself terminated. If this is not the case, you are dismissed".
The openness of the hallway was a refreshing reprieve. Walking a short distance away from Sir Integra's office, you caught your bearings and reflected on your circumstances. "I guess that means I'm hired..."
You walked down a corridor, not really having a destination in mind. You just needed to think. ‘Am I really cut out for this?’ It all just felt so overwhelming. What if you failed? How would you be able to afford to get back home? Could you go back home? Already, the familiar warmth of tears began to prick at the corners of your eyes.
The eerie silence of the hallways seemed to swallow you whole as the weight of your uncertainty bore down. Your muffled footsteps left soft thuds against the carpeted marble floor, the only sound breaking the oppressive quiet. As if sensing your distress, the door lining the corridor slowly creaked open and beckoned you forth, revealing dimly lit rooms. Shadows danced within, casting an unsettling atmosphere that matched your turbulent thoughts. The soft yellow glow of the hallway lights bounced off of your ID badge and mixed with its myriad of colors. Your eyes traced over the hard piece of plastic, already sick of seeing the organization’s namesake. You shook your head. No, you can't think like this anymore! Stop with the negative self-talk! You’re not in America anymore— this is your chance to start again and prove yourself. You deserved to be here! As you continued to wander, the air within the building began to grow colder and clammier. The sudden oppressiveness of the atmosphere made even breathing uncomfortable. ‘What's going on?’ From your periphery, a particular painting caught your eye. It was of an aristocratic woman. Elegant and tall. Though beautiful, something was off. The eyes...Why were they red? You stood under the painting, observing it like a child would an attraction. Though sizable, you felt like the painting’s dwarfing effect couldn’t exactly be attributed to the painting's breadth.
"I see you've discovered Lady Integra's collection." For a short time, your surroundings were a blur as your eyes searched for the new variable.Your sights found its prize when it rested on the source of the rich baritone and smokey cologne: A man. As his chiseled jawline, silky raven hair, and broad shoulders emerged from the darker corners of the hall, more of his appearance came to light. Atop his dark tresses, laid a red wide brimmed hat that matched his red duster , and underfoot, were long leather boots. To complete the man’s strange ensemble, was his pair of orange sunglasses that reflected a brilliant sunset orange amongst the backdrop of shadows. Was this a popular dress style in England? You regarded the strange man with a level of suspicion, allowing the swell of goose pimples that were beginning to form to justify your apprehension. Clearly, this man must be an employee here; after all, he just spoke of Sir Integra. But where is his ID badge? You released a cold puff of air and gathered yourself.
“Y-yes, I have. It’s quite beautiful.” After a short pause, the man gives an appreciative hum. He approached the painting- and by extension, you- with measured strides.Though you tried not to make it obvious, the way your eyes tracked every inch of the man’s movement made your anxiety palpable. You eyed the man’s Adam’s Apple as it bobbed, like he was drinking in your fear. You chided yourself for the silly thought. Peeking through the sides of his glasses, you swore you saw crimson. It’s just a trick of the light.
“Aye, it is, isn't it? A true testament to humanity's will to rebuke what is their natural inheritance. It is but an inevitability, the grip of death, yet pieces like these ensure one will forever persist; even if it is through mere paper and colored earth. Humans…are so fascinating.”
You look up at the strange man, taking into consideration his words. “I…never really thought about it in that way. I suppose the tendency for humanity to preserve itself can be admirable, but I also can’t help but wonder when it stops being worth it to try. How many hours of labor and hardship did it take for one to even get the materials for this? Was the artist that was commissioned for this even compensated? Were they under duress? Countless resources, likely at others expense, just to spite the inevitable. At what point does it become insanity to continue?” To some extent, you wonder if the investment in such decadence could ever not be seen as tasteful. The man tilted his head in confusion, though his glasses made it difficult to tell. He later meets your gaze once more with a wide grin. “And yet it is here for you to ponder on. You still admire it, do you not?” You suppose he’s right about that…you suppose. “Mmh.”
“Alucard” What? Oh, of course, your name! “ W-here are my manners? It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Alucard!" You extended your arm for a handshake. Alucard raised an eyebrow, his expression hinting amusement at your sudden enthusiasm . Despite this, he gently took your hand in his. "The pleasure is all mine, dear" he murmurs, his voice smooth like velvet. As he released your hand, but not before a moment of arrest. The man was unnaturally cold. This made little sense considering he was wearing gloves. You stared down at them, noticing the odd symbols that traced along the smooth fabric.
"So, do you work here?” You ask nervously. “...My dear child, military compounds are not known for hosting tours” Alucard chuckles. You blushed as you kicked yourself for having asked such a stupid question. Unfortunately, it was not the last, but as the conversation between the two of you progressed, you found his biting sarcasm to be…entertaining? Clearly, the man was just as (if not more) entertained by you. From the sneaking glances at his spectacles, hints of amusement expressed itself through the veiled outlines of his eyes.
“Say, earlier when we were talking about that painting, you mentioned something about how humans are ‘fascinating’...” His strong jaw tilted to give you a cryptic expression. The corners of his eyes crinkled in delight as his cheshire smile welded together to tease a truth not yet privy to you. “Yes, and what of it?”
Swirling sunset eyes met with yours. Questions went unsaid and the impossibility of his eye’s inhuman color went unattended to by your psyche. Drawn to his preternatural beauty like a moth to a flame, your delicate digits found respite along the cool angles of Alucard's jaw; his long arms wrapped around your delicate waist in turn.
The satisfied gleam in his eyes turned a bright vermillion, though this did not register to you. After all, how could it when the point of his nose felt so good against the curve of your neck? How could anything matter when the light feather kisses along the new trail of bruises felt so right? You were floating on a fluffy cloud. You leaned in more to seek the comfort of his tongue's girth as he further suckled upon your skin. Pads of your breasts being kneaded was the button needed to release the breathy moan that escaped from your lips. You ached with need, he could smell it. A whine escaped from your lips as Alucard withdrew slightly, a wicked grin spread across his face as he assessed your feeble state. Your arm tickled at the way his gloved fingers danced along your skin. Your jaw felt good in between his fingers, you thought.
“My dear, you wished to know what I meant when I spoke of humanity…Do you still want to know?” It was unfair really. How could you possibly answer such a thing when he was toying with your body like this? When his large hands dared to roam under the fabric of your clothes and to your heat? When his tall nose tickled its way so sweetly along the surface of your cheek until his lips could reach the shell of your ear to continue whispering sweet temptations? Bent sinfully, the Vampire King sampled more of your flavor, though careful not to break any skin—Yet.
“Why do you reject it? Why deny yourself ? Sweet thing, allow me to show you the pleasures of surrender.” 'That... Maybe that wouldn't be so bad...', your mind drifts. The ghost of affirmation clung to your lips by a finger. That shouldn't be a problem, right?
“Is that a problem?” Your mind thought back to that woman..
Blood, as Alucard has learned over the centuries, tasted better when given freely. He just needed the word. He began to coo at you, sure that his prize was soon to be had. Your eyebrows knitted together and your hands reached to push at Alucard's broad shoulders. From your periphery, true would be found. His teeth…His eyes…You couldn't even recall when he'd taken off his glasses…
He's going to kill you, isn't he? Your first day on the job... Will be your last. Though the bulk of your freewill had mostly seeped out and left a vast space for persuasion, the 'bulk of' didn’t mean all. Blunt nails made harsh contact with soft skin. Streaks of scrapped flesh mirrored the streaks of salty water that cascaded down your cheeks. Quickly, reserved defiance turned into a desperate fight for life. Just as quickly, however, your body tired and could no longer accommodate your frantic attempts. Your mind followed suit when the previous bloody tears against pale flesh sealed; leaving no sign of damage behind. “H-help!” It seemed that no such thing would come. Worse than before, the echoes of your voice did nothing to salve the desperate disposition of your nerves. You were truly alone…Never had a smile looked so sickening.
You weren't going to win. Whoever this is, whatever this is, was going to kill you and there was nothing you could do about it.
"Please... Make it quick” Alucard, at your words, sniffed in disgust. His initial features of surprise quickly turned into an acrid distaste. Suddenly, the rotten blood of ghouls would be more preferable than the presence of a coward. Humans who were so willing to just forfeit their life...
"Disgusting," Alucard spits out, recoiling as if offered a meal of festered meat and a chalice of pus. Disdain etches itself onto his angular features, a look of utter contempt. His venomous glare pierced through you, freezing your very soul. Though “free”, you were not sure if you were better off in this situation or the former. Meek human eyes locked gazes with hot coals from the depths of hell.
“BACK AWAY FROM THE GIRL OR WE WILL BE FORCED TO SHOOT!"
The man in the familiar tactical gear,‘Birminghamman’, you vaguely recall, shouts as he points his firearm at the haunting figure. The presence of another human did not, unfortunately, improve your spirits. In fact, the presence of more bodies and more guns made the situation ironically more tense. Red eyes laid no heed to the crowd forming around the spectacle; it's attention only on you.
There was no other form of acknowledgement other than a mere scoff. The specter of a man swiveled on booted heels and was welcomed by the darker expanse of the hallway. Crimson lined shadows retreated, leaving nothing but dotted black plumes in its wake.
Birmingham was the last to lower his gun. "M-miss, are you alright?” You really weren't sure how to answer that question. Were you okay? “Listen, if you need to go to the infirmar—”, You recoiled at his reassuring gesture, only able to stare back owlishly.
You were told everything.

Earlier you said none of the crew survive to bear witness Odysseus's transformation into a sea monster. But what if I told you that there was one person on Odysseus ship who did witnessed his new form, and his name is Achaemenides, who was part of Odysseus's crew before he was left behind on the cyclops's Island until he was rescued and recruited by Aeneas from the Epic Poem known as the Aeneid.
So imagine Aeneas and his crew encountering a humanoid sea creature and they had no idea it's the infamous Odysseus, who's heard about Aeneas's exploits, specifically the ones where he somehow manages to bypass Charybdis and Scylla without losing anyone onboard, and it pisses Odysseus off because he had to sacrifice six of his men just to live another day.
So when Odysseus finally meets the famous Aeneas of Troy, he introduces himself as Ulysses of the Seven Seas and Poseidon's right-hand man and judges him to whether or not he and his fleet are fit to sail across his waters.
Aeneas plans on tricking the beast by giving him drugged wine, but Odysseus saw right through his plot and muses on killing him or not. When Aeneas begs him not to do this, it reminds Odysseus of the time when he begged Zeus not to make him kill a baby and force himself to choose himself over his brothers' lives. This causes him to spare Aeneas and his crew and give his fleet a pass.
The other Trojans looked at Odysseus, who turned away due to guilt and shame. The Trojans had no idea why this sea creature decided to let them live, but they rather not dwell on it and continued their duties on the ship.
Achaemenides, who recognized Odysseus instantly, watched his form shrink from afar until he was nothing more than a blimp.
When a Trojan asked if there was something on his mind, Achaemenides replies, "I'm fine. There's nothing to worry about."
Hi! As interesting as this idea certainly is, this story’s main focus is on the Odyssey as it’s inspired by Epic the Musical. And I would personally not on any way use the name Ulysses in anything I wrote or draw about Odysseus, as I consider the Roman version of the myths their own separate tales and Ulysses to be an entirely different person considering how I like Odysseus he is.

As you all know i love Justice League Meet The Batfamily au fics. And i was thinking about how i havent yet read one focusing solely on Signal. Heres one idea on how it could go
Im thinking a au where the JL know Batman has Gotham associates to a extent (aka that he has some, no one knows how many, theres "Robin" but Robin is obviously switched out by another person every few years, etc) and maybe they know Nightwing but thats it. The extended batclan are playing assassin. And Duke gets Bruce. Which is majorly daunting. And pretty much a guaranteed failure. Duke is disappointed but decides to give it his all anyways
Now, there are ofc rules. One is you cant get anybody at work or school. However, "work" only applies to day jobs. Night time escapades are fair game. So Duke targets Bruce where he'll feel safest: the Watchtower. Its basically off limits for the kids. Does that break some rules? Yes. But it doesnt break any of the assassin rules and therefore the defeat will still count
Duke has to recruit some help, obviously. Babs is absolutely down for this. She messes with the zeta to not announce him and does some other stuff. Maybe causes a annoying distraction? Maybe helps make it look like there is a intruder onboard and helps Signal pick off members one-by-one like a horror movie? Maybe Duke just sits in a vent for 4 hours? Maybe another batkid shows up and starts a scene so Batman is focused on parenting them while standing surrounded by his colleagues so he wont feel there is a threat?
Either way Duke shoots Bruce with half a canister of yellow paintballs when no one was expecting a attack/a gun fight
Bruce is shocked. He's just looking at his hand where his fingers touched "the wound" aka the paint. Everyone is either stunned in silence or screaming bc Batman is down
And Signal comes out in the open with the paintball gun on his shoulder all smug. And theres commotion before Batman starts laughing. Everyone looks over. And Bruce just wades through the JL before reaching Duke. Congratulates him, Bruce beaming with pride, and Batman hugs him. Commotion once more: "what just happened!?" "Who is this?" "Is Batman hugging?!" I like it when ppl write Bruce as affectionate around his kids so maybe its a excited swaying hug where Bruce is laughing as he pulls Duke to him and drops a kiss on his head. One of his kids managed to get the drop on him! he's ecstatic! This is a milestone moment!
and maybe then whover has Duke as a target shoots him right as everyone calms down

I have had bad interview experiences where communication took forever, was dropped, where the people I talked to changed and gave me incorrect information... You name it. Now, my stance is pretty firmly "we make our first impression as a team when we reach out to the candidate, not when they are being hired and onboarded for the role". We can't be dismissive of someone until they have gone through the gauntlet of interviews.
But even trying to go the extra mile you are often a victim of circumstances - you have several candidates and you want to make sure to evaluate them fairly, but one of them is dragging their feet getting back to you. One of your critical interviewers is suddenly out sick. The Talent Acquisition agent handling the req left their job and the person filling in has to be onboarded while filling their responsibilities for some other team. Priorities of the team shifted what the role you are hiring for is about.
Job hunting is stressful, just waiting to get a response can be a nightmare at the best of times. A few things you can do as an applicant though;
Always ask when you can expect to hear back unless the next interaction is already scheduled. Ask the interviewers, if you can't ask them, ask the recruiter via email. If they fail to meet the deadline that doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, but it gives you a good excuse to reach out yourself without the risk of being annoying.
Having deadlines is normal. Many people have competing offers that they need to respond to. If you have a deadline, inform the recruiter about it - they will likely try to work around your schedule. Like, don't lie about it to make yourself seem desirable or hurry them into a decision, it can backfire. But if you don't let them know about your deadline they might drag their feet to solve some other timing issue.
Interviewers typically leave you some time to ask your own questions at the end of a loop, sometimes the time you are given is not enough or maybe you couldn't think of anything in the moment. It is a good idea to come prepared, but if you realize after the fact that there was something you wanted to ask about - reach out to the recruiter and ask them to forward the question to the interviewer. They might not be able to help, but they typically don't mind trying.
Now, I can't speak for other industries, but in the games industry we typically have a lot of applications for every position. Getting to the interview stage means the team has taken an interest and the interviewers have a positive opinion of you - you do not need to be concerned with bothering them. In fact, taking an interest in them and being responsible with people's time is a sign of professional maturity that most hiring managers like to see.
