LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
July 6, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUL 7, 2023
The payroll processing firm ADP said today that private sector jobs jumped by 497,000 in June, far higher than the Dow Jones consensus estimate predicted. The big gains were in leisure and hospitality, which added 232,000 new hires; construction with 97,000; and trade, transportation and utilities with 90,000. Annual pay rose at a rate of 6.4%. Most of the jobs came from companies with fewer than 50 employees.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which is a way to measure the stock market by aggregating certain stocks, dropped 372 points as the strong labor market made traders afraid that the Fed would raise interest rates again to cool the economy. Higher interest rates make borrowing more expensive, slowing investment.
Today, as the Washington Post’s climate reporter Scott Dance warned that the sudden surge of broken heat records around the globe is raising alarm among scientists, Bloomberg’s Cailley LaPara reported that the incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act for emerging technologies to address climate change have long-term as well as short-term benefits.
Dance noted that temperatures in the North Atlantic are already close to their typical annual peak although we are early in the season, sea ice levels around Antarctica are terribly low, and Monday was the Earth’s hottest day in at least 125,000 years and Tuesday was hotter. LaPara noted that while much attention has been paid to the short-term solar, EV, and wind industries in the U.S., emerging technologies for industries that can’t be electrified—technologies like sustainable aviation fuel, clean hydrogen, and direct air capture, which pulls carbon dioxide out of the air—offer huge potential to reduce emissions by 2030.
This news was the backdrop today as President Biden was in South Carolina to talk about Bidenomics. After touting the huge investments of both public and private capital that are bringing new businesses and repaired infrastructure to that state, Biden noted that analysts have said that the new laws Democrats have passed will do more for Republican-dominated states than for Democratic ones. “Well, that’s okay with me,” Biden said, “because we’re all Americans. Because my view is: Wherever the need is most, that’s the place we should be helping. And that’s what we’re doing. Because the way I look at it, the progress we’re making is good for all Americans, all of America.”
On Air Force One on the way to the event, deputy press secretary Andrew Bates began his remarks to the press: “President Biden promised that he would be a president for all Americans, regardless of where they live and regardless of whether they voted for him or not. He also promised to rebuild the middle class. The fact that Bidenomics has now galvanized over $500 billion in job-creating private sector investment is the newest testament to how seriously he takes fulfilling those promises.”
Bates listed all the economic accomplishments of the administration and then added: “the most powerful endorsement of Bidenomics is this: Every signature economic law this President has signed, congressional Republicans who voted “no” and attacked it on Fox News then went home to their district and hailed its benefits.” He noted that “Senator Lindsey Graham called the Inflation Reduction Act ‘a nightmare for South Carolina,’” then, “[j]ust two months later, he called BMW’s electric vehicles announcement ‘one of the most consequential announcements in the history of the state of South Carolina.’” “Representative Joe Wilson blasted the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law but later announced, ‘I welcome Scout Motors’ plans to invest $2 billion and create up to 4,000 jobs in South Carolina.’ Nancy Mace called Bidenomics legislation a…‘disaster,’ then welcomed a RAISE grant to Charleston.”
“[W]hat could speak to the effectiveness of Bidenomics more than these conversions?” Bates asked.
While Biden is trying to sell Americans on an economic vision for the future, the Republican leadership is doubling down on dislike of President Biden and the Democrats. Early on the morning of July 2, Trump, who remains the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee, shared a meme of President Biden that included a flag reading: “F*CK BIDEN AND F*CK YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM!” The next morning, in all caps, he railed against what he called “massive prosecutorial conduct” and “the weaponization of law enforcement,” asking: “Do the people of this once great nation even have a choice but to protest the potential doom of the United States of America??? 2024!!!”
Prosecutors have told U.S. district judge Aileen Cannon that they want to begin Trump’s trial on 37 federal charges for keeping and hiding classified national security documents, and as his legal trouble heats up, Trump appears to be calling for violence against Democrats. On June 29 he posted what he claimed was the address of former president Barack Obama, inspiring a man who had been at the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to repost the address and to warn, “We got these losers surrounded! See you in hell,…Obama’s [sic].” Taylor Tarranto then headed there with firearms and ammunition, as well as a machete, in his van. Secret Service agents arrested him.
Indeed, those crossing the law for the former president are not faring well. More than 1,000 people have been arrested for their participation in the events of January 6, and those higher up the ladder are starting to feel the heat as well. Trump lawyer Lin Wood, who pushed Trump’s 2020 election lies, was permitted to “retire” his law license on Tuesday rather than be disbarred. Trump lawyer John Eastman is facing disbarment in California for trying to overturn the 2020 election with his “fake elector” scheme, a ploy whose legitimacy the Supreme Court rejected last week. And today, Trump aide Walt Nauta pleaded not guilty to federal charges of withholding documents and conspiring to obstruct justice for allegedly helping Trump hide the classified documents he had at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump Republicans—MAGA Republicans—are cementing their identity by fanning fears based on cultural issues, but it is becoming clear those are no longer as powerful as they used to be as the reality of Republican extremism becomes clear.
Yesterday the man who raped and impregnated a then-9-year-old Ohio girl was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison. Last year, after the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision recognizing the constitutional right to abortion, President Biden used her case to argue for the need for abortion access. Republican lawmakers, who had criminalized all abortions after 6 weeks, before most people know they’re pregnant, publicly doubted that the case was real (Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost told the Fox News Channel there was “not a damn scintilla of evidence” to support the story). Unable to receive an abortion in Ohio, the girl, who had since turned 10, had to travel to Indiana, where Dr. Caitlin Bernard performed the procedure.
Republican Indiana attorney general Todd Rokita complained—inaccurately—that Bernard had not reported child abuse and that she had violated privacy laws by talking to a reporter, although she did not identify the patient and her employer said she acted properly. Bernard was nonetheless reprimanded for her handling of privacy issues and fined by the Indiana licensing board. Her employer disagreed.
As Republican-dominated states have dramatically restricted abortion, they have fueled such a backlash that party members are either trying to avoid talking about it or are now replacing the phrase “national ban” with “national consensus” or “national standard,” although as feminist writer Jessica Valenti, who studies this language, notes, they still mean strict antiabortion measures. In the House, some newly-elected and swing-district Republicans have blocked abortion measures from coming to a vote out of concern they will lose their seats in 2024.
But it is not at all clear the issue will go away. Yesterday, those committed to protecting abortion rights in Ohio turned in 70% more signatures than they needed to get a measure amending the constitution to protect that access on the ballot this November. In August, though, antiabortion forces will use a special election to try to change the threshold for constitutional amendments, requiring 60% of voters rather than a majority.

Six of Crows Reread - Ch. 5
Another chapter by our very own Dirtyhands!
_
Chapter 5: Kaz
“One day Rollins would come to Kaz on his knees, begging for help. If Kaz managed this job for Van Eck, that day would come much sooner than he ever could have hoped. Brick by brick, I will destroy you.”
And that day did indeed come, at the end of Crooked Kingdom and in episode 2.04 of S&B. In my opinion, one of the best scenes in the whole show. Freddy embodied Kaz SO WELL in that scene.
“The boy at the desk was dressed in a creamy velvet suit, a white rose in his buttonhole. He had white hair and eyes the colour of boiled eggs. Barring the eyes, he looked like an albino, but Kaz happened to know that he’d been tailored to match the decor of the House by a certain Grisha on the payroll.
[...]
She had a lucrative side business as a Tailor, seeing to the wrinkles and jowls of the wealthy Kerch, but her chief source of income came from altering moods.”
I think this guy will look really creepy in the show! Also, Nina must not be such a shitty Tailor, if she managed to do that and if she has a lucrative job at it on the side. We learn in the second book that it was Genya who tailored her to look like Mila Jandersdat, but she must have some good enough knowledge of Tailoring (being from the same Order as Tailors) to manage that.
“A man doesn’t need a bed to get ideas, Nina.”
Nina fluttered her lashes. “What would you know about it, Kaz? Take those gloves off, and we’ll see what ideas come to mind.”
“A man doesn’t need a bed to get ideas” yeah well, as a very wise man once said (more exactly, Archie Renaux in one of S&B’s interviews) “men are trash” so, yeah, there’s that.
Also, I really wanna see Nina flirt with Kaz in the show! We know she flirts with everyone and we saw a glimpse of it with the “Waffles” exchange, but it would be really funny to watch an exchange like this.
Lastly, I wonder if we’ll see Nina work in the White Rose as she does in the book. She’ll need to find a job as she buys time to free Matthias, so maybe she will?
“The brain is just another organ,” Kaz said, quoting Van Eck.
“Yes, but it’s an incredibly complex one. Controlling or altering another person’s thoughts … well, it’s not like lowering a pulse rate or releasing a chemical to improve someone’s mood. There are too many variables. No Grisha is capable of it.”
Another foreshadowing to what Nina will be able to do under jurda parem by the end of the book.
“Without being invited, Kaz sat down on the plush settee and stretched out his bad leg. “Jurda parem is real, Nina, and if you’re still the good little Grisha soldier I think you are, you’ll want to hear what it does to people like you.”
She turned the lump of gold over her in her hands, then wrapped her dressing gown more tightly around her and curled up at the end of the settee. Again, Kaz marvelled at the transformation. In these rooms, she played the part her clients wanted to see – the powerful Grisha, serene in her knowledge.
But sitting there with her brow furrowed and her feet tucked under her, she looked like what she truly was: a girl of seventeen, raised in the sheltered luxury of the Little Palace, far from home and barely getting by every day.”
It must be very weird watching Kaz stretching his leg in the same couch that Nina’s sitting it. We are used to seeing him be physically detached from the rest of his team, so even these small moments of “closeness” will be very interesting to watch in the spin-off.
On another note, is Nina not making big money as a tailor. Just a few paragraphs ago it said that she had a lucrative job as one, so now she’s just barely getting by?
“He isn’t hiding out. The Fjerdans have him at the Ice Court.”
Nina paused. “Then he’s as good as dead.”
“The Merchant Council doesn’t think so. They wouldn’t be going to this trouble or offering up this kind of reward if they thought he’d been neutralised. Van Eck was worried. I could see it.”
Later we find out that Van Eck was lying to Kaz because, among other things, he didn’t even have 30 million kruge to spare in case the Crows made it out of the Ice Court. So why did Kaz believe him in the first place? I think it was because all good lies are always embedded with a little bit of truth, so Van Eck showing proof of what jurda parem could do (with the Tidemaker being able to cross walls and the Heartrender’s effects being still visible in the stadwatch members) was the “truth” part, and the “lie” part was him being able to pay them 30 million kruge for the retrieval of Yul-Bayur. Of course, Kaz being the greedy person that he is, and in order for him to fulfill his future plans with Rollins, it was a huge opportunity. Besides, breaking into the Ice Court was impossible so that also presented an extra challenge for him so much so that he was almost powerless to refuse it.
“Don’t put this on the old man,” she snapped. “If you’d wanted to help me, you know you could have.”
“And why would I do that?”
She whirled on him. “Because … because …”
“When have I ever done something for nothing, Nina?”
Except he kinda does? Unless he also has a hidden agenda that we don’t know about. In episode 2.08, after Nina says that she’ll claw her way to a happy ending, Kaz answers with “Let me help you” but like...if he doesn’t do things out of charity, what is his reason?
“That may have been true once, Nina, but it’s been a very long year. Helvar is much changed.”
“You’ve seen him?” Her green eyes were wide, eager. There, thought Kaz, the Barrel hasn’t beaten the hope out of you yet.
“I have.”
I can’t wait for Kaz and Matthias’ first scene together!! And the fact that Calahan and Freddy are so eager for their first scene as well just makes me sure it’ll be great!
So that’s it for chapter 5. Next up, the very first episode of our favorite Heartrender <3

EMPLOYEE CENTRAL INTEGRATION
Essential Guide to Employee Central Integration
Employee Central (EC) has become the core HR system of record for many organizations. It offers streamlined management of employee data, payroll, time and attendance, and more. However, Employee Central’s true power comes from its ability to integrate with a wide range of internal and external systems. This enables smooth business processes, improved data consistency, and greater efficiency.
Why is Employee Central Integration Important?
Seamless Data Flow: Integration eliminates data silos. Changes in EC can automatically flow to other systems, reducing errors and manual data entry.
Process Automation: Integrate EC with recruiting, performance management, payroll, and other vital systems to streamline end-to-end HR processes.
Enhanced Reporting and Analytics: Combining HR data with data from finance, sales, or customer support systems can yield deeper business insights.
Improved User Experience: Employees and HR teams benefit from single sign-on capabilities and the ability to manage data across systems from within EC.
Types of Employee Central Integrations
Payroll: One of the most common and essential integrations is with payroll systems. This ensures accurate and timely payroll calculations based on EC data.
Benefits: Integrate EC with benefits providers to manage enrollments, deductions, and updates.
Performance Management: Link EC to your performance management system to align talent processes and draw insights from performance data alongside other HR metrics.
Time and Attendance: Integrate with time tracking tools to capture employee hours and feed that data into both EC and payroll processes.
Third-Party HR Vendors: EC can integrate with numerous third-party HR applications like recruitment platforms, learning management systems, and more.
Integration Methods
Pre-Packaged Integrations: SAP SuccessFactors simplifies setup and provides pre-packaged integrations for many everyday use cases.
Middleware: Middleware solutions like SAP Cloud Platform Integration (CPI) are intermediaries between systems, facilitating data exchange with custom mappings and transformations.
APIs: Use EC’s robust APIs to establish custom integrations with other applications tailored to your unique needs.
Best Practices for Successful Integration
Planning: Start by identifying your most critical integration needs. Outline clear goals and objectives.
Data Mapping: Invest time in meticulously mapping out data fields between EC and other systems to ensure data integrity.
Governance: Establish a clear governance structure that defines ownership, roles, and responsibilities for managing integrations.
Testing: Conduct rigorous testing before going live to identify and troubleshoot potential issues.
Maintenance: Integrations require ongoing maintenance and monitoring. Implement mechanisms to manage changes and resolve issues promptly.
The Future of Employee Central Integration
As technology evolves, so does integration in the HR space. Expect these future trends:
Increased Use of AI: AI will significantly automate integration processes and flag potential data discrepancies.
Low-Code/No-Code Solutions: Platforms that simplify integrations for non-technical users will gain prominence.
Real-Time Integrations: Real-time data exchange will become more feasible, enhancing process efficiency.
In Conclusion
Employee Central integration is a strategic investment that drives your organization’s automation, efficiency, and valuable insights. By understanding the types, methods, and best practices of employee central integration, you can establish a robust and scalable HR ecosystem.

5 compliance challenges in forming a remote team
In recent times, remote working has become a new trend that is totally beneficial for both employers and employees. But, with great benefits comes great responsibilities. While keeping all the benefits in mind, one has to take care of the compliances, rules, and regulations of forming a remote team in another country.
Because of the advantages of remote work, many enterprises plan to build remote teams outside their home country. But one should not forget about crossing the compliance challenges.
In this blog, we have explained 5 important areas of compliance challenges that one should be mindful of. This blog would also touch upon the issues businesses face due to compliance oversight while forming a remote team outside your home country.
Compliance that you should be mindful about
The five important compliance areas which you should explore more for the destination you choose to build your remote teams are listed below. The early identification of the compliances and ensuring you make arrangements to fulfill those would avoid unpleasant surprises as you get started with experiencing the benefits of remote working. Also, keep in mind that every compliance fulfillment has its own cost and you should factor in those costs in your budgeting.
Data security compliances
In recent times data security has become very important and governments imposed strict norms around data sharing outside the country’s jurisdiction.
European countries have a GDPR system for the security of data. The GDPR has the right to request businesses to delete, correct and forward the data. If any such compliance issue or failure to protect data subjects, the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC may require operational changes and impose major fines.
For example, Meta has been fined $1.3 billion for transferring the personal data of users to servers in the United States.
AvePoint surveyed 223 respondents from multinational companies.
Only 26% of them keep records of data for processing and transfer
Only 33% classify the data
Only 10% utilize automatic data classification
All of these are significant for GDPR. Organizations should perform an audit for their data security that may help them to rectify their mistakes.
79% of people say that they would abandon the brand if their data is used without informing them.
That’s the reason why It is significant to have security policies and guidelines to stay away from data loss issues. Keep yourself updated with cross-border data transfer rules and regulations.
Payroll compliances and licenses for remote hiring
It is difficult for foreign employers to consider compliances and legal regulations regarding payroll and taxation. For example, in India, you may have to open a legal entity that allows you to hire employees.
Some local authorities require home occupation permits for remote workers. Some states, and especially locals are strict with the terms of permitting and licensing. There are chances of getting into trouble by paying payroll taxes without having any local-level home occupation permits.
Previously, companies have received notices regarding such situations from interconnected government agencies. The distinctions between managing a business from home and not doing so are blurred as more work is done
remotely and as remote workers gain more autonomy. Ensure with your employee’s local city or country zoning laws and requirements of the permit.
With the help of an employer of record services, you can have a team working for you through a local employer without setting up a legal entity in the country. Such agencies are known as Employer of Record (EOR)
Requirements for foreign qualification
If you have established a corporation or limited liability company, and have employees working from different countries, then you may need to meet the requirements of foreign governments.
You may need to qualify your limited liability company in that country depending on your type of business, what your remote employees are working on, how many employees are in a country, and how long they are responsible. This might be setting up a separate entity in the geography, where you have employees.
Applying for permission to conduct business in a state other than the one in which the corporation or limited liability company was incorporated is known as a foreign qualification. You would need to meet the requirements if you regularly take orders or carry out contracts there, or if you have a physical presence there.
Once registered, the corporation or limited liability company will also be subject to additional compliance requirements, such as the need to name and keep up a registered agent and submit an annual report.
Tax compliance for remote employees
As per rules and regulations, employees are liable to pay taxes to the country in which they work. If the employee is working from another country, under the rule of physical presence, you’re required to hold back the unemployment and taxes in your country. But, there are some exceptions.
Some countries and states have given agreements about allowing an employee who lives in one country and works in another or neighboring state to have their tax paid to the work state. This could be different as the country changes.
The remote employees may have to pay double taxation since they are subject to income tax in both countries. For such issues, you might need an employer of record services that will help you remain safe.
EOR services have the best knowledge of tax responsibilities and assume responsibilities for employees. EOR takes your tax worries and responsibilities away.
Tax nexus- Becoming Permanent Establishment
Tax Nexus is the term that indicates a situation when the organization is having business in a state or country other than its primary location. Depending on the remote employee’s designation or role, the organization comes under sales, income, or other tax laws. Here comes a proficient measure – EOR services to deal with your Taxation.
With the help of an adept understanding of taxes, laws, and responsibilities EOR services help you to be safe.
Understand Permanent Establishment status compliance issues
If an enterprise establishes an entity in another country, here comes the risk of Permanent Establishment. The enterprise is liable for corporate income tax, any attendant penalties, and interest charges.
PE risk appears when the foreign enterprise starts to promote goods and services within a country’s border and generates revenue out of it. For example, buying a factory in another country with the purpose of hiring lower-cost labor.
Increased tax burden and a lot of international tax and other regulations violations and litigation, reputational damage, could be the reasons that may bring PE risk.
A business cannot fail to account for its company tax liability because if tax authorities find so they might look for other irregularities and the PE risk takes place. An employer can be found breaching the obligations because a country’s corporate tax liability and employer liability are similar.
EOR services can be a one-stop solution
Employer of record services will help you manage your remote employees. EORs ensure your compliance with local laws and regulations.
EOR provides a range of services from recruitment to onboarding. They are experts in handling legal compliance issues and also in navigating local employment laws, ensuring a low risk of legal issues for the company. This is possible due to the firm presence of EOR services with fully functioning employment systems in the respective countries.
EOR provides cost-effective payroll processing, benefits administration, and HR management. EOR services can be the best support for businesses that want to manage their remote employees more effectively and efficiently. Forget all the worries of compliance and rely on EOR.

Patrice Lewis Interview
The Mysterious Amish Nanny by Patrice Lewis is a very uplifting book. It has readers understanding how someone needs to change their lifestyle for their emotional well-being, preferring to have family come first.
The heroine, Ruth Wengerd, quits her lucrative job on Wall Street and impulsively leaves behind everything to go on a cross-country trip. Unfortunately, her car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and she needs to be rescued by an Amish man and his son. Because she needs money, she agrees to be the nanny for Lucas, the son of Adam Chupp who is a widower. She begins to fall for this family, bringing back memories of the time she was part of an Amish community as a young child.
Adam is also a contrast for Ruth. He shows her the importance of family, and that money should be for support not for ambition. While Ruth makes Adam understand the importance of having a partner, he shows her the importance of family.
As with all of Patrice Lewis books readers get a heartfelt story with some mysterious plotlines that will keep people turning the pages.
Elise Cooper: The idea for the story?
Patrice Lewis: I had this story in my head years ago. I wanted to write someone snaping emotionally, where they leave their job, and then have their car break down in the middle of nowhere after going on a cross country trip. I had read about the pressure cooker environment of Wall Street, contrary to the lifestyle I have. I based some scenes in the story from the book Young Money by Kevin Roose. Where my routine is deliberately slow and unpressured this is contrasted by the intense Wall Street environment that sucks employees every hour of someone’s life. This was the theme I wanted to explore.
EC: What is the mystery of the story?
PL: There are several little mysteries woven through it. First, why did the heroine’s parents leave the Amish when she was a ten-year-old? There is also how Adam tries to figure her background out after seeing a missing flyer of Ruth. Besides those there was why Ruth left a successful job on Wall Street, what had she done to become so ashamed?
EC: You explore some traditions of the Amish?
PL: I wrote in the story how they sing hymns. On YouTube I came across a couple of Amish girls, one playing the guitar and the other singing a particular hymn.
EC: How would you describe the heroine, Ruth?
PL: She is impulsive and ambitious. She is also impetuous, affectionate, kind, and tender, which comes out in her love of children. She is searching for a “home.”
EC: How would you describe Adam?
PL: There is a lot of my husband in him. We have a woodcraft business for several years. It can leave someone very frazzled which is how Adam reacts. He is lonely, caring, kind, and worried about his hyperactive son. He left behind his support structure after his wife passed away. He was a single dad.
EC: How similar is the relationship between the four-year-old child Lucas and Ruth?
PL: Both are impulsive, enthusiastic, energetic, and firecrackers. Ruth understood Lucas. I based the story where Ruth became Lucas’ nanny on my daughter. She was a professional nanny and learned how to deal with these overly active children by keeping them occupied. Lucas adored Ruth and always wanted to impress her.
EC: What about the relationship between Adam and Ruth?
PL: She still has the Wall Street mentality that money is everything, while he just wants to earn enough to support, himself and his son. Ruth is vulnerable. The relationship started with the young boy’s feelings for Ruth. She remembers the fond memories of the Amish view of community and family since in her early life she was raised Amish. They both realize what they are missing: her a family, and he a solid home life.
EC: How did the financial end affect the relationship?
PL: Adam and Ruth became a team first, as she helped him with his finances. Ruth was able to keep track of his finances, write proposals, write estimates, and do the billing and payroll. This freed him up to build, construct, and supervise. This is also based on how my husband, and I handled our business. He can create and build, while I do the numbers and taxes. Just as with us, with Ruth and Adam, one person’s weakness is the other person’s strength. They balance each other off.
EC: Next book?
PL: The title is The Quilter’s Scandalous Past. It is based on a huge Amish store in Ohio called Lehman’s. The heroine, Esther, manages the store for her aunt and uncle. She works with this prospective buyer who knew her as a teenager. It is probably coming out in June. The third story in this series has a “Beauty and the Beast” theme.
THANK YOU!!

The American Worker is Getting the Short End of the Stick
In case you were wondering, corporations are not passing along the benefits of a better economy to American workers:
Patricia Cohen | Paychecks Lag as Profits Soar, and Prices Erode Wage Gains
Yearly wage growth has yet to hit 3 percent. And when it does, the Federal Reserve — which has a mandate to keep inflation under control even as it is supposed to maximize employment — can be expected to tap the brakes.
As Fed policymakers have explained, allowing the economy to run too hot “could lead eventually to a significant economic downturn.” And persistent wage increases, unlike growing profit margins, are considered a signal that the heat is on.
The bank’s primary method of cooling the economy is to dampen spending and investing by raising interest rates and making it more expensive to borrow money — an antidote that could hurt profits in some sectors as well as trim payrolls. The thinking goes like this: Better to inflict some pain now, in the form of higher joblessness and sluggish wage growth, than to allow more pain later.
After keeping benchmark interest rates at near-zero levels during the recession, the Fed has been gradually nudging them up. So far this year, it has raised rates twice.
With tariffs piling up and potentially pushing prices higher, odds are that the Fed will push through two more increases before 2018 ends. The Labor Department reported this week that one inflation measure, the Consumer Price Index, had increased 2.9 percent in 12 months — the highest level in six years.
Discomfort with a tight labor market and growing worker bargaining power is to some degree baked into the Fed’s makeup. Pressure to raise wages during expansions will inevitably be seen as precursors to insidious inflationary pressure.
The conventional wisdom that higher wages inevitably lead to higher prices, however, is flimsy, some economists argue.
“It theoretically makes sense,” Michael R. Strain, an economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said of the link between wage increases and inflation, “but empirically, it’s increasingly difficult to find a real strong link.”
A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, for example, concluded that “the connections among wages, prices, and economic activity are more akin to a tangled web than a straight line,” and that “the ability of wages to help predict future inflation is limited.”
A tight labor market should give workers some leverage to push for higher wages, but hourly earnings have moved forward at a crawl. Regardless, there is plenty of evidence that workers have yet to receive their fair share of this most recent expansion — or even the previous one.
Since the century’s start, labor’s share of the nation’s income has sunk to the lowest levels in decades.
In 2000, when the jobless rate last fell below 4 percent, corporations pulled in 8.3 percent of the nation’s total income in the form of profits; wages and salaries across the entire work force accounted for roughly 66 percent.
Now, the jobless rate is again fluttering below 4 percent. But corporate profits account for 13.2 percent of the nation’s income. Workers’ compensation has fallen to 62 percent.
If workers’ share had not shrunk, they would have had an additional $532 billion, or about $3,400 each, said Jared Bernstein, an economic adviser to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. And at this point in the recovery, shifting some of those corporate profits to workers would have no effect on inflation, he noted.
In the tug of war between workers and investors, Americans living on a paycheck have seldom been left with a shorter end of the rope.
It's time for workers to demand their fair share, I think. The combination of slow-to-raise-pay corporations and Fed policy is a one-two punch to the actual earnings of Americans, diverting more to corporate profits and interest payments that benefit banks.
Just as important, it is time for the Fed to break the tight link between a rise in wages and a corresponding increase in the interest rate, which effectively cuts the benefits of the pay rise for most workers.
