Front row in Nice Cathedral sat Y/n Bianchi. She was dressed in a lacy black dress, her hair in curls tied up in a half up half down hairstyle. Beside her was Charles Leclerc, her older brother. He kept glancing over at the nine year old girl.
In front of them sat her fathers coffin surrounded with daisies, his favourite flower. It was also what Jules nicknamed Y/n.
'Marguerite'
She was playing with the lace, this isn't the right place for a nine year old to be. Outside were a plethora of media and press, ready to capture the drivers attending the funeral, Jules' coffin or Y/n Bianchi. There was little to no pity for the young girl on this hard for her from the media or press.
"Charlie?" Y/n's small and unsure voice pulled his attention to her. "Who are all these people?" Pointing to the many people attending the funeral around the cathedral, Y/n made a face of confusion.
Charles was quick to look around the cathedral. "They are here to pay their respect to papa...just like us" He took a deep breath, trying to keep composure for the nine year old. "Papa is a very loved and respected man by many"
Y/n knew of the love and respect her father had, but still couldn't understand that. "But they didn't know him like we do?" It was true, these people don't know Jules like his daughter and godson does.
They didn't know that he was doing formula one for Y/n, they didn't know that he was both terrified and proud of Charles for following in his path. They didn't know this stuff, personal stuff.
The Monégasque loved how observant she was, he loved that she could seperate personal love and platonic love. "That's why you don't need to give them anything today, just focus on loving and saying goodbye to papa..." Nodding her head, Y/n listened to Charles' request.
"Focus on papa..."

After Jules' death, Charles' practically adopted his daughter. Only a couple months after the funeral, Y/n moved in with Charles. He became her legal guardian.
Y/n, now seventeen years old, was sat at a lunch table with Alex, Charles' current girlfriend and Rebecca, Carlos' current girlfriend. On any race weekend, she would attach herself mostly to the two girls and looked up to them a lot .
"So babes any more news on that boy, what was his name? Tom?" Alex asked curiously. With Charles being Y/n's legal guardian, Alex would take on the role of big sister and would give anything to talk about the seventeen years olds love life.
"Oh my god yeah! Has it moved any more from the dms?" Rebecca would chime in, she was also a great lover of listening about Y/n's love life.
"Well..." Y/n dragged this bit out, seeing how anticipated the two older women were getting. "We've been on a few dates, Charlie doesn't know though"
Both Alex and Rebecca were quick to gasp, drawing the attention of those around them before snickering slightly. "Oh and when I asked what we were, he said that I'm his and he's mine!"
All three females were grinning at that last piece of information and Alex was about to say something when the two ferrari boys had made their arrival at the table. Both dressed in the racing suits, red head to toe.
"What we talking about ladies?" Charles asked excitedly, giving Alex a quick peck on the lips before checking on his adopted sister who was trying her hardest not to laugh.
"Oh nothing! Just asking Y/n how she's finding college at the moment..." The oldest of the ladies, Rebecca, spoke up and quickly covered up their previous conversation with a lie.
Y/n let out a nervous laugh, glad that Rebecca had managed to cover it all up. "Yeah, it um...great at the moment, love it"
She was about to say something else but Charles was quick and swift to step in and essential boost about the girls success in college. "Better than great! Marguerite is at the top of her class, studying media and communication!"
'Marguerite'
It warmed Y/n's heart to know that Charles had carried on her papas legacy.
"Oh wow! Go on Y/n!" The tall spanard celebrated, clearing proud of her success much like his teammate. "Top of the class! You really are a smart lady, you gonna conquer the world!"
The whole table laughed at Carlos’ enthusiasm to praise the seventeen year olds success in her studies.

It was two am in the morning, Charles and Alex were asleep in their room however the teenager was not.
No, she was pulling on her Jordans. Wearing a white and baby pink tracksuit, Y/n grabbed her phone before quickly and quietly rushing to the front door of the apartment.
She was going to hang out at Toms house, yet Charles still didn’t know. Also the Monégasque had a curfew for Y/n, two am was much past that curfew by now.
Y/n went to unlock the apartment door but when she accidentally dropped her keys on the hardwood floors, she panicked. The walls are paper thin.
Of course this meant that she had woken up Charles and Alex. “Fuck!” Y/n quietly cursed herself for ruining her plan.
As she went to pick up the keys, the hallway light flickered on. “Y/n? What are you doing up?” It was Charles. “And dressed?”
“C-Charlie…hi” He gave her a confused expression, clearly not oblivious to her nervousness.
“Y/n what’s going on?” Charles asked again, more firm now.
“I um…nothing” Y/n replied to his question horribly, it was evident that she was lying. He held a intimidating glance over the girl, prompting her to open up and spill. “I was sneaking out! I’m sorry Charlie!” She pleaded.
“Where to? A party?”
“No…um my boyfriends house…” She knew it would come out eventually so it was better to rip off the bandaid and fast.
Silence filled the hallway, Charles looked shocked and unsure of how to react whilst Y/n felt ashamed and anxious.
Another voice filled the air, Alex. “How about we all go to bed, yeah? Talk about this in the morning” She waited for the two to nod, Y/n much quicker than Charles but he did still nod. “Y/n, I suggest you text Tom and tell him you can’t come over”
“Okay…” Charles look even more shocked and angry when he realised that Alex must of known about this the whole time.

Waking up the next morning, Y/n could hear distant voices from the kitchen. Getting out of bed and making her way to the kitchen, the voices became more identifiable.
There were four, all with various accents. Monégasque, Spanish, British and finally Dutch. That could mean only four people.
As she walked into the kitchen dining room, it was confirmed to Y/n that she had Charles, Carlos, Lando and Max there, all seemingly waiting for her.
"Morning..." It hadn't seemed to click in her mind as to why they were all there staring at her disapprovingly.
It was only when she realised that Alex was not there and the usual bubbily behaviour the men would have was no where to be seen that the penny dropped. "Oh..."
"You wanna tell the guys whats happened?" The sarcastic tone Charles had set the tone for the rest of the conversation. Plus it was bullshit. The Monégasque would have already told them the whole story, it was evident on their faces.
"Go on Y/n, do tell..." The third time world champion pushed.
Looking down, Y/n had now instantly found her acrylic nalls very interesting. "I was sneaking out...and Charles caught me..." The seventeen year old mumbled.
"Where were you sneaking out to?"
"My boyfriends place..." The girl finally looked up and was met once again with disappointed facial expressions. "I'm sorry, I know you like me dating but he's a really sweet guy..." Y/n tried to reason with them but before anyone else could say anything, there was a knock on the front door.
"I'll get it and you." Charles got up from his seat, pointing to Y/n. "You are still not off the hook." He was quick to make his way to the front door whilst Carlos, Max and Lando spoke to Y/n a little bit more, slightly softer now.
However, their conversation was cut short rather quickly when they heard Charles shout. "You got to be fucking kidding me!"
Turns out Tom had decided to come over, expecting only Y/n to be home. So now he was being dragged into the kitchen dining room by his shirts neck line. "Carlos, Max and Lando meet the boyfriend. Go on introduce yourself."
Tom and Y/n locked eyes, his more panicked and hers more guilty. "Charlie come on, let him go! He hasn't done anything wrong!" The twenty six year old did thankfully listen to her, but dropped the boy to the ground in the process.
“Except violate our Marguerites innocent mind” Lando snapped back, truly believing that Y/n’s mind was completely innocent.
The young boys hands went up in defence, smirking slightly. He knew that Y/n was far from innocent. “Oh don’t smirk!” The Spaniard caught Toms smirk, and was not happy about it.
It was Maxs turn to speak again. “Okay okay, right Y/n and Tom sit down on the couch” He demanded.
Listening to the Dutch man, the two seventeen year olds were quick to sit down on the couch. Toms hand unconsciously moved to rest on Y/n’s thigh but drew back to his own lap when he felt the sharp glare from all four of the drivers.
“You explain yourself” Max pointed toward the female.
“Me and Tom met through a mutual friend, we’ve been on a few dates and I love him” A deep crimson blush covered her cheeks. Giggling softly.
It was hard for the drivers to stay annoyed at Tom, they could see how happy this one boy made her.
Happiness is all Charles ever wanted for Y/n especially after losing her father. Happiness was something the Monégasque always deeply prioritised whilst raising his little sister.
“He makes me happy…Charlie please”
That same deep blush covered Toms cheeks, he was still a young and awkward teen. “Oh I didn’t know that…you love me?”
They were like love sick puppies, anyone could tell even if they were blind or deaf. “Yeah of course I do…”
This stumped Charles, Max, Lando and Carlos. They wanted to be angry at Tom but they simply couldn’t. Why? Because it was obvious how happy and loved Y/n felt with Tom.
“Putain!” Cursed Charles. How is he meant to be angry now? “You know, you are really making it hard for us to be angry at you”
Lando nodded in agreement. “Yeah fuck you for that guys”
A smirk cracked through Y/n’s rosey cheeks, well aware of what was happening. She knew full well that they weren’t annoyed at them anymore.
“So does this mean that you approve?” As soon as Y/n asked the question, Tom became confident once again and moved his hand back to her thigh, caressing it slightly.
All the older men just groaned, knowing that they’d just have to endure with the relationship. It was gonna happen eventually, Charles just wished it didn’t come round so soon. “Yes fine, just keep it pg thirteen around us please”
Nodding excitedly, Y/n happily jumped up from the couch before wrapping her arms around Charles hugging him tightly. “Thank you thank you thank you!”
This made him reminisce on when Y/n was younger, hugging was on of her favourite things to, especially with Jules.
Whilst the brother and sister hugged tightly, Tom with his new found confidence also got up. Shaking the hands of the three other drivers.
“You protect her, you hear me.” Carlos warned. Tom was quick in nodding, not wanting to cause any more bad impressions.
And in those moments where Y/ns relationship with Tom could come free, letting them love each other openly and without fear, both Charles and Y/n could feel Jules’ presence.
They could feel how he was looking down on them, protecting them, loving them and being their guardian angel.
Watching over his dear godson and his Marguerite.

A história de Mitsuki Yatasharu Phoenix terminou abruptamente, de forma cruel, aos 17 anos. Ela punia aqueles que se achavam intocáveis, que magoavam os mais fracos por causa de suas origens. Sua forma de agir era meticulosa, planejada. Clarice, sem saber da verdadeira origem dessa nova força em Rebecca, ficava impressionada com a determinação de sua namorada em defender os mais vulneráveis, apaixonando-se ainda mais por ela a cada dia.
No entanto, mesmo com o novo amor, a nova família, e a nova vida, a vingança ainda ardia dentro de Mitsuki-Rebecca. Sua jornada era cheia de dilemas: até onde iria para fazer justiça? Estava disposta a sacrificar sua relação com Clarice, sua nova família e até mesmo a sua própria humanidade para se vingar daqueles que a destruiram e aos que causavam sofrimento aos outros?
Ao enfrentar esses desafios, Mitsuki-Rebecca percebeu que a justiça que buscava não era simples. O ódio não podia ser enfrentado com mais ódio. Clarice, mesmo sem saber toda a verdade, era uma luz na escuridão, mostrando-lhe que o amor e a compreensão podiam curar as feridas profundas que o preconceito e a crueldade haviam causado.
No final, Mitsuki-Rebecca teria de escolher: continuaria sua missão de vingança, ou encontraria uma nova forma de justiça, uma que não a consumisse completamente nas sombras?
Assim, a jovem australiana-japonesa reencarnada como Rebecca Lucchese Bianchi Diaz caminhava entre o passado e o presente, entre a vida e a morte, buscando seu propósito enquanto tentava equilibrar o amor, a justiça e a sua própria redenção.

Assange, Londra rigetta il ricorso: estradizione vicina

Pericolosamente vicino all’estradizione negli Stati Uniti. A denunciare il rischio che corre Julian Assange è stata Reporters Sans Frontières, appena la moglie Stella Assange ha reso noto che la High Court del Regno Unito ha rigettato l’appello contro l’estradizione del fondatore di WikiLeaks. La decisione è arrivata questa settimana dopo ben nove mesi di attesa, senza alcuna udienza ed è stata emessa da un unico giudice, Jonathan Swift, peraltro entrato già nelle cronache per aver rigettato un appello di una trentina di richiedenti asilo che rischiavano di essere deportati in Ruanda, in base alle politiche dei conservatori inglesi contro rifugiati e migranti. È una delle ironie della storia che la sentenza arrivi proprio nella settimana in cui Donald Trump – la cui amministrazione ha incriminato Assange per la pubblicazione dei documenti segreti del governo americano – sia finito incriminato proprio con la stessa legge: il brutale Espionage Act del 1917, per la gestione di una serie di documenti riservati durante la sua presidenza. Le condizioni di salute di Julian Assange sono serie. È rinchiuso nella prigione più dura del Regno Unito, Belmarsh, da oltre quattro anni, con pericolosi terroristi, e da ben tredici anni non conosce più la libertà. È incarcerato a Belmarsh dall’11 aprile 2019, senza che sia mai stato condannato: è in attesa che le autorità inglesi decidano sull’estradizione, che in primo grado era stata negata dal giudice Vanessa Baraitser per la gravità delle sue condizioni mentali. Nel gennaio del 2021, infatti, Baraitser aveva ritenuto fondato il rischio di suicidio. Ma appena undici mesi dopo, la High Court aveva ribaltato la sentenza, dopo che gli Stati Uniti avevano offerto garanzie diplomatiche sul trattamento in carcere del fondatore di WikiLeaks, ignorando completamente che, durante il processo di estradizione, è emerso che la Cia aveva pianificato di uccidere o di rapire Julian Assange, mentre ancora si trovava in ambasciata. La High Court non aveva dimostrato alcun problema con queste rivelazioni: aveva creduto alle “garanzie diplomatiche”.
La difesa di Assange aveva fatto ricorso e questa settimana è arrivata la sentenza. Tutte le più importanti organizzazioni per la difesa dei diritti umani e della libertà di stampa, da Amnesty International a Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), hanno chiesto all’Amministrazione Biden di chiudere il caso. “È tempo di fermare la persecuzione senza tregua di Assange e di proteggere il giornalismo e la libertà di stampa”, ha dichiarato Rebecca Vincent, a capo delle campagne internazionali di Rsf. A questo punto la difesa di Assange e WikiLeaks ha tempo fino a martedì prossimo per ripresentare di nuovo appello alla High Court, e se verrà rigettato di nuovo, e rimarrà solo la Corte Europea dei Diritti dell’Uomo. La moglie Stella Assange si è detta “ottimista”. Nel frattempo, novità importanti potrebbero arrivare dall’indagine dei magistrati spagnoli sulle operazioni di spionaggio contro Julian Assange, i suoi avvocati, i suoi medici, e contro noi giornalisti che gli abbiamo fatto visita nell’ambasciata, prima che fosse arrestato. Secondo quanto riportato dal quotidiano spagnolo El País la settimana scorsa, è emerso che la polizia spagnola non aveva copiato alcuni file che contengono riferimenti alla Cia. Errore tecnico?

song stuck in my head: perpetually the main riff from Charles Mingus' "Moanin'" (specifically this version), a tune which Corey and I have decided is just the soundtrack to an easily imagined animated piece about small terriers getting into Trouble. thus it has become the melody to at least a third of the little songs we sing to and about our small terrier when he is, getting himself into Trouble.
last thing i googled: kdjsshjkghs. well. it was "bicycle in tenebrae" because I watched the opening to Argento's Tenebrae last night and discovered the protagonist spends the first scene riding a MOTHERFUCKING CELESTE BIANCHI to the JFK airport and I needed to know if any other bicycle enthusiasts were talking about this. (a Bianchi is a very iconic Italian racing bicycle, often painted a highly recognisable shade of oxidised-copper blue-green called Celeste. anyway I happen to have one from the mid-80s because Corey, who works as a bike mechanic and salesperson at a terrible little bike shop that is absolutely exploiting them, scored a frame in perfect condition in my exact size and has been refurbishing her since like, August, and she is my pride and joy and the fastest and most beautiful bicycle in the WORLD.) the most ABSURD special-interest collision I've had in months. anyway Corey was able to identify the bike in the film down to the model and the approximate model year, which I thought was very sexy of them.

dream trip: I want to show Corey (and everyone else I love) New York, the city I fell in love with, and Corey wants to show me London, which they fell in love with as a teenager, and we both want terribly to spend a month in Scotland, walking Edinburgh for hours and bicycling through the otherworldly green hills. I want to go back to Boston. I want to go back to West Virginia. I want to go back to Nova Scotia, and explore the plains of Canada as well, and I want to drive up the entire west coast and get my head lost on those long strange highways. I want to see Prague, and Tokyo, and Berlin, and Vienna, and Mumbai, and Sao Paolo, and Paris, and Beijing, and, everywhere that's a city that has become a myth of a city. I want to see places I'd never considered and fall in love with the unexpectedness of them. I want to take every single subway in the world. I want to go on a food tour of Italy, and Vietnam, and Turkey, and Morocco. I want to see forests that are older than any building I've ever touched. I want to see Australia, and Galapagos, and I want to get stoned as fuck with Rebecca and Britt in Atlanta and then go hiking, and for Corey and Rowan and Dylan and I to all cook a big meal together and then scream about tv, and go thrifting with JD in Texas, and have Kater show me her best weird secondhand shops in upstate New York, and Avery I want to lie on the floor with you and the record player and get so fucking lost, and I want all the people I love best to show me the places they love best, and tell me why it matters to them and try to see the ways in which they love that place and if I can get it inside of me, too. I want to see so much. I want to see everything.

Mi sentirei incompleta senza la forza che mi danno i miei figli, ma soprattutto mio marito, la mia assoluta metà, un uomo generoso, concreto, mi dà stabilità e sicurezza, mi guida per mano dai miei sogni verso la terraferma come in un quadro di Chagall". LIAFF SPECIAL #7: Jordan Peele - Il cinema terrificante e spettacolare
Carissimi lettori, ben ritrovati con un nuovo appuntamento con LIAFF SPECIAL, la rubrica dedicata all’approfondimento di personaggi e temi nel mondo dell’intrattenimento. L’argomento per questo mese riguarda uno dei registi più insoliti e particolari dell’attuale panorama cinematografico, trattasi di Jordan Peele. In questo articolo impareremo a conoscere il cineasta statunitense, partendo dalle sue origini come attore comico, fino all’analisi approfondita dei suoi noti lungometraggi, i quali rappresentano perfettamente e in maniera diversificata la visione portata avanti dal regista.
The comedian: chi è Jordan Peele?
Jordan Haworth Peele nasce a New York il 21 Febbraio 1979 da padre afro-americano, Hayward Peele jr., morto nel 1999, e da madre bianca, Lucinda Williams. Cresciuto con sua madre nell'Upper West Side di Manhattan, Peele ha studiato fino al 1997, per poi formare un duo comico assieme a Rebecca Drysdale, ex-compagna di scuola e futura sceneggiatrice di Key & Peele. Fino al 2002 Peele si esibisce a Chicago ed altre città in performance comiche e musicali, per poi entrare nel mondo della televisione l'anno successivo, con il suo ingresso nella nona stagione di Mad TV, un programma di sketch comici, dove farà coppia con Keegan-Michael Key. Nel 2008 Peele lascia Mad TV e si mette in proprio, creando musica e contenuto a sfondo parodistico e satirico, appare in alcune serie televisive e film, fra cui l’adattamento televisivo di Fargo, la già menzionata Key & Peele, serie co-creata con Keegan-Michael Key e andata in onda dal 2012 al 2015, e l'action-comedy Keanu, sempre in coppia con Key. Nel 2017 Jordan Peele si da’ ufficialmente alla regia, coronando un sogno che ha sin dall’età di dodici anni, e produce negli anni anche altre opere, fra cui si ricordano la nuova versione di The Twilight Zone, Hunters e Lovecraft Country.
Get Out: fuga dal delirio
“Man, I told you not to go in that house.”
Nel 2017 Jordan Peele esordisce come regista cinematografico, optando per un horror con elementi di commedia, affermando come i due generi siano incredibilmente simili tanto per il ritmo, quanto per l'affidarsi alle rivelazioni nel corso della storia. Per scrivere il film, Peele afferma di essersi ispirato a The Stepford Wives (1975), uno dei primi esempi di film horror con sfumature satiriche, e che per lui il film è molto personale, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la tematica del razzismo. Con l’aiuto di Keegan-Michael Key, Peele presentò l’idea al produttore Sean McKittrick, il quale rimase parecchio entusiasta del progetto. Peele scrisse la sceneggiatura in circa due mesi e il casting iniziò qualche tempo dopo, con Daniel Kaluuya e Allison Williams ad essere scritturati per primi. Peele racconta di aver scelto Kaluuya per il ruolo del protagonista dopo averlo visto nell’episodio di Black Mirror “Fifteen Million Merits”, mentre per Williams il regista ammette che la scelta dell’attrice è frutto di una manovra per disorientare il pubblico, dato che il suo personaggio appare all’inizio del film come una persona di fiducia, per poi rivelarsi l’opposto nella seconda metà della pellicola, con la scena dove sceglie la prossima vittima e sorseggia del latte sulle note di “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” scritta proprio per rafforzare il lato oscuro del personaggio. Tutto viene studiato a tavolino da Peele, dalla scelta della location in uno stato americano dove non predominavano atteggiamenti razzisti, alla presentazione del “sunken place” come metafora del cadere in un luogo oscuro e pericoloso per poi risalirvi, interpretato da alcuni critici anche come chiave di lettura per raccontare la paura vissuta dalla popolazione afro-americana sin dall’inizio della loro storia. Tale componente aveva portato Peele a temere che il film non potesse avere successo, a causa di un eccessiva identificazione da parte dei bianchi e degli afro-americani che lo avrebbero visto, e ha influenzato anche la colonna sonora, curata da Michael Abels, le cui tracce hanno voci di cantanti afro-americani ed elementi della musica black. Il finale originale del film prevedeva che Chris venisse arrestato dalla polizia dopo aver strangolato Rose e che Rod, invece di salvarlo, lo andasse a trovare in prigione, offrendogli aiuto per smascherare la famiglia Armitage, cosa che Chris non avrebbe ritenuto necessario. Secondo Peele, tale epilogo rifletteva la realtà legata al razzismo, ma durante la produzione del film, Peele optò per un “lieto fine”, anche alla luce degli episodi di violenza contro gli afro-americani da parte della polizia accaduti in quel periodo (in realtà il regista aveva considerato diversi finali, alcuni dei quali sono inclusi anche nei contenuti speciali del DVD/Blu-Ray del film). A dispetto delle previsioni il film incassò moltissimo al botteghino e fu acclamato dalla critica per la storia, l’interpretazione, la regia e soprattutto il sottotesto sociale, arrivando infine ad ottenere quattro nomination agli Oscar 2018, vincendo solo come miglior sceneggiatura originale. Riguardo all’interpretazione del suo significato, la visione più condivisa è quella dove il film è visto come una rappresentazione critica dell’America post-razziale, dove gli antagonisti non sono gli estremisti bianchi, ma i cosiddetti liberali, i quali, per quanto bene possano comportarsi nei confronti degli afro-americani, in realtà rendono loro la vita disagiante, riducendo le loro figure a un modello estetico e nient’altro.
Us: il lato oscuro prende vita
“Once upon a time there was a girl, and the girl had a shadow.”
Essendo rimasto turbato dalla confusione di generi usata in Get Out, Peele affermò che il suo secondo lungometraggio dovesse essere un horror a tutto tondo. Per scriverne la storia, Peele racconta di essersi ispirato all’episodio di The Twilight Zone “Mirror Image”, che parlava di una giovane donna e del suo oscuro doppelgänger, e che l’idea degli esseri incatenati nel sottosuolo deriva dalla sua esperienza ogni volta che prendeva il treno per tornare a casa, affermando che ogni volta che passava sotto una galleria, vedeva un riflesso di se stesso. Nel 2018 ebbe luogo il processo di casting, con Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke e Elisabeth Moss a venire scritturati per primi, seguiti dal resto del cast. Peele afferma di aver sempre visto la famiglia Wilson come un episodio di archetipico quartetto, dove Adelaide (Nyong’o) è il leader, Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) è il guerriero, Gabe (Duke) è il giullare e Jason (Evan Alex) è il mago. Per interpretare il suo doppelgänger, Nyong’o ha usato una voce differente, affermando di essersi ispirata alla condizione nota come disfonia spasmodica, in cui la voce di chi ne è affetto è soggetta a regolari spasmi, aggiungendo anche di essersi preparata in maniera sicura con l’aiuto di terapisti e medici specializzati. Le riprese durarono per tre mesi e all’uscita nelle sale il film ebbe un grande successo, con la critica che ne apprezzò la regia, la sceneggiatura, l’interpretazione della Nyong’o e la colonna sonora di Michael Abels, difficile da dimenticare. Come per Get Out, anche in Us c’è stato un dibattito riguardo al significato del film. Alcuni ritengono che vi sia un collegamento fra gli esseri del sottosuolo, le leggende urbane e la paura per il diverso, altri affermano che il film rappresenti il classismo e il dualismo degli Stati Uniti, arrivando a pensare che il titolo del film potrebbe significare U.S., l’acronimo per United States (Peele avvalorerà questa ipotesi, affermando in seguito che uno dei temi principali della pellicola è il concetto di privilegio). Il film è ricco di riferimenti cinematografici, letterari e della cultura pop, dalle inquadrature alla Stanley Kubrick, all’effetto horror ereditato da film come Jaws e A Nightmare on Elm Street, al riferimento alla figura di Michael Jackson, specialmente nelle tute rosse indossate dai doppelgänger, fino alle citazioni della Bibbia, in particolare al libro di Geremia, dove si parla della caduta della civiltà causata dai falsi idoli.
Nope: un terrore spettacolare

Nel 2019, la Universal Pictures annunciò di aver stipulato un accordo quinquennale con la Monkeypaw Productions, casa di produzione di Jordan Peele, e l’anno seguente il regista si mise al lavoro sul suo terzo lungometraggio, raccontando di averlo scritto in un momento in cui vi era preoccupazione riguardo al futuro del cinema, a causa della pandemia di Covid-19, e che pertanto intendeva scrivere un film spettacolare, il quale avrebbe riportato il pubblico nelle sale cinematografiche. Peele aggiunge anche di aver scritto la sceneggiatura rinchiuso in casa e che questo lo ha portato a scegliere il cielo come il soggetto del film, sapendo che il mondo da un lato intendeva tornare all’esterno ma dall’altro aveva vissuto un trauma profondo, che lo spingeva a chiudersi in se stesso. Nel Febbraio 2021 Keke Palmer e Daniel Kaluuya si uniscono al cast, assieme a Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea e Keith David, con le riprese che si tennero da Luglio a Novembre di quell’anno. Il film uscì nelle sale nel Luglio 2022, essendo il primo film di genere horror ad essere girato con la tecnologia IMAX, ed ebbe un grande successo, con la critica che ne esaltò la visione ambiziosa, la regia e l’interpretazione, finendo nella top 10 dei film del 2022 redatta dall’American Film Institute e venendo definito uno dei migliori film fantascientifici del ventunesimo secolo. Naturalmente anche Nope è stato soggetto a un approfondita analisi, e la critica evidenziò che i temi più rilevanti dellla pellicola erano il concetto di spettacolo e di sfruttamento del dramma e del trauma, menzionando il riferimento alla cancellazione della presenza afro-americana nell’industria cinematografica, fattispecie nel genere western, motivo per cui all’interno della pellicola viene citato Buck and the Preacher (1972), il primo film ad avere dei cowboys afro-americani, o anche la figura di Ricky Jupe (Yeun), il quale sfruttava l’incidente avvenuto nella sitcom a cui aveva preso parte da bambino e anche la presenza della creatura per crearsi la propria fama. La creatura aliena è chiaramente una metafora, a detta di Peele, di una minaccia d’altro mondo, nonchè un qualcosa che ci accomuna, vale a dire il rapporto con lo spettacolo, citando come riferimento per la sua rappresentazione il famoso anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, il quale contiene notevoli riferimenti biblici.
What’s next: il futuro del regista
Jordan Peele non si ferma di certo qui. Infatti la Universal Pictures ha confermato che il quarto lungometraggio del regista uscirà nelle sale a Natale 2024 (data soggetta a variazioni a causa dell’attuale sciopero della WGA). Come per i precedenti progetti, Peele non ha ancora svelato nè la trama, nè il genere del film, nè tantomeno il cast, ma siamo fiduciosi che il regista saprà regalarci nuove e terrificanti emozioni. Intanto, se non avete avuto ancora modo di vedere i suoi film, vi consigliamo di recuperarli, ne vale davvero la pena!

In the round-up: Max Verstappen expects a revision to Pirelli’s tyres for the new season will suit his handling preference.
