Hold on… Is bbc merlin just Romeo & Juliet but with adults and two dudes?
It’s been a while since I watched either, and obviously there are differences, but… both have doomed narratives, are about two enemy “families” (magic people vs non. Montegues vs Capulets), that animosity eventually leading to the death of the main couple (Merlin doesn’t die, but he certainly lost his other half and probably felt dead. plus he’s immortal so we can’t hold him to mortal standards of life and death). Arthur killed kara which led to Mordred killing him, and in r&j there was some back and forth killing to that set it all off, right? And then after the deaths (r&j, Arthur) things seemed to be resolved and people make peace (the Montagues and capulets stopping their feud, Whatever Gwen did on the throne. Seemed hopeful and she knew it was Merlin, right? So she prbly did smth about the ban).
My brain’s not braining very well right now so maybe I’m reading too much into this?? But??? They do have some similarities, right?

Okay thoughts on Romeo and Juliet that I might add to later. My opening, general thoughts are as follows:
- there were people on stage before the show technically began, which was very immersive and helped create the right vibe for the show
- the entire cast was PHENOMENAL, genuinely there wasn't a single person whose performance was lacking
- specific honorable mention to Gabby Beans, who played both Mercutio and Friar Lawrence (absolute show-stealer)
- there was a LIVE DJ doing all the music, which was super super cool
As for specific scenes/details, these are the ones that really blew me away:
- Romeo's soliloquy. Kit Connor's performance had so much personality, it was so joyful and energetic. For any musical theater fans here, the best thing I can think to compare it to is the song Maria performed by Tony in West Side Story (another R+J adaptation, for anyone not familiar with it)
- The character of the Nurse was done VERY well in this show. In Act 1, she was very bright and bubbly and flirtatious, which sort of reminded me of — don't laugh — Nanette (the frog) from Gnomeo and Juliet, who is adapted from the Nurse. BUT in Act 2, following Tybalt's death, she changes completely. She goes from wearing mostly white to wearing all black. Her hands are covered in blood for the entire rest of the show (Macbeth reference?). And, she occasionally wears the jacket that is part of Tybalt's costume. In this production, Tybalt and the Nurse are played by the same person, which makes that a particularly interesting choice.
- Any scene Gabby Beans was in. Her performance of Mercutio was to die for (get it?). She played him with such personality, and was HILARIOUS. Another interesting choice in this show is that she/her characters are the only ones allowed to break the 4th wall, usually for comedic effect, which landed every time. As I said above, she totally stole the show.
And ALSO
I need a whole new set of notes to talk about Mercutio/Tybalt's death scene. ESPECIALLY for my benmars fans out there because there were two distinct choices made there that I feel need to be mentioned. It was fantastically acted, first of all. And secondly, here are the specific choices that I just can't stop thinking about:
- Benvolio is one of the first people to go to Mercutio's body as he dies, of course. BUT, when Romeo comes over to assess the situation, Benvolio falls to the side and just lays down on the ground crying like he has also died. It was a FANTASTIC choice.
- The next fantastic choice that immediately followed that one was, when Romeo leaves the body to challenge Tybalt, and they start fighting, Benvolio essentially crawls on top of Mercutio and curls his entire body around him to protect him from the further violence, even though he's ALREADY DEAD. WOW.
- And, last but not least, immediately following that scene, Benvolio departs from the stage alone to come sit on the stairs in one of the aisles and just cries for the entirety of the next scene. This happened in the aisle right next to where I was sitting.
So now you know why I've called to attention the benmars fans.
All in all, it was a great show, and this was actually my first time seeing a Shakespeare play performed live! A fantastic first experience if you ask me. If there's anything else you're curious about, feel free to ask!! I'm happy to share more.

Let's just hope, it doesn't take the tragic ending as a template...
[Crowley finds Aziraphale. They seem to be dead.]
Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavory guide!
Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on
The dashing rocks thy seasick weary bark!
Here’s to my love. Drinking. O true apothecary,
Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.
[Crowley dies]
[Aziraphale awakes]
O comfortable friar, where is my lord?
I do remember well where I should be,
And there I am. Where is my Crowley?
What’s here? A cup closed in my true love’s hand?
Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end.—
O churl, drunk all, and left no friendly drop
To help me after! I will kiss thy lips.
Haply some poison yet doth hang on them,
To make me die with a restorative. She kisses him.
Thy lips are warm!
[Maggie and Nina approach]
Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O, happy dagger,
This is thy sheath. There rust, and let me die.
They take Crowley's dagger, stabs themselves, and dies.
[Nina]
This is the place, there where the torch doth burn.
[Maggie]
The ground is bloody.—Search about the
churchyard.
Go, some of you; whoe’er you find, attach.
Some shopowners exit.
Pitiful sight! Here lies Crowley slain,
And Aziraphale bleeding, warm, and newly dead,
Who here hath lain this two days burièd.—
Go, tell the Heavens. Run to the Angels.
Raise up the Demons. Some others search.
Others exit.
We see the ground whereon these woes do lie,
But the true ground of all these piteous woes
We cannot without circumstance descry.
[Epilogue. All the heavens, hell and Whicker Street assembled]
[God speaking]
A glooming peace this morning with it brings.
The sun for sorrow will not show his head.
Go hence to have more talk of these sad things.
Some shall be pardoned, and some punishèd.
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Aziraphale and their Crowley so.
GET THIS: Good Omens is basically Romeo and Juliet except it's more tragic with 6000 years of pinning.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who sees this.
