He's so insanely ugly. His face doesn't have any of the boldness of his cartoon look and instead looks cluttered and weird. The lines should probably run like that if you translate his face 1:1, but since this art is so much more realistically proportioned it just looks wrong and it'd probably make more sense to angle the eye lines more.

And that suit is just a travesty. It clashes with his skin colour and is for some reason closely modelled after his red lantern suit, which none of his blue suits have been so why did they feel like that was necessary? It looks bad, especially in this style, and it's kind of edgy in a way RLs get away with and GLs don't.

Young Justice’s blue+red lantern design for razer always kind of bothered me bc it seemed kinda lazy so I wanted to do my own version of it. Not meant to be 2d animation friendly I just did what I thought looked cool. Design notes+headcanons under cut!!

1. Frankly I think YJ came to the same conclusion I did: it’s very hard to come up with a design for Razer when his design is already peak. Like genuinely how do you replace his extremely iconic design? He’s got a very clear silhouette, sharp edges that screams danger. He’s basically entirely branded as a Red Lantern and you can see that from the stripes and shapes in his armor/uniform. So I tried to break off some of that sharpness while keeping others! Being a red lantern is still a part of him, being angry is still a part of him, but he is not solely defined by it anymore.

2. Head cover: I covered his hair because, even though I am of the faith that he’s got hair under those layers, I think he’s got layers for a reason. His wife’s head covers always reminded me a lot of a hijab, and he’s always covered his own hair. I like to think it is a strictly cultural practice, and he wouldn’t wear his hair out normally unless with family members or the like.

3. I gave him back his striking eye markings, his claws, his sharp cheekbones. YJ and the current DC run design for him has always bothered me in the way they completely removed the sharpness in his design. His face shape is extremely characteristic of him, not to speak of his underbite (which I think is a very obvious and defining trait) as well as him being overall sharp. His species is almost strictly carnivorous, he’s got to have a sharpness to him.

4. Even though I really do like the mixture of the lantern symbols, I wanted to try and implement both separately. He’s still striking red, of course, but the blue lantern symbol is much more apparent within his uniform to indicate he’s exceptionally hopeful now more than ever.
