Hey internet etiquette question for y'all

If I want to make a plushie inspired by art I've seen, and it is not for commercial use, I'm not selling it or sharing the pattern, should I still contact the artist first? Or just tag them in the post with the finished plushie and link back to the specific art I based it on? (or reblog their post with the photo of the plushie?) If you were the artist, which would you prefer? Or would you prefer something else? edited to add: I did used to always message the artist first but then sometimes by the time they responded I'd have moved on to the next thing and then I'd feel bad for not making their plushie? It's completely understandable for them to not reply to messages immediately, I also don't always respond quickly, I just felt guilty for not making their plushies after I'd asked about it and it stopped me sewing plushies based on art entirely for a while

#I do always ask before selling the plushie or sharing the pattern #but some things there's just no way I'm going to be able to get in contact with the actual artist #like I saw a drawing of one of the characters of...I think it was she-ra? idk I never watched the show #drawn as a kid with a super cute scorpion plushie that I kept calling a lobster and I had to sew it #but it was by one of the actual artists from the show #I gave that plushie to a friend #I have shared the blorbo sewing and crochet patterns for free here on tumblr but I did ask first #I do also offer the artist first dibs on the plushie I sew #and like either don't charge them or give them a hugely discounted rate that's pretty much #just the cost of supplies plus shipping to send them the plushie #or I do art trades! love me some art trades #idk I really love bringing other people's art to life as a physical object #and getting to share the joy of seeing your idea brought into the real world as an item you can hold #I've sent plushies of their art to a bunch of artists over the years it's one one of my favorite things to do
