(sourced from interviews with raymond lam, terrance lau, tony wu, and german cheung that were posted to bilibili and xiaohongshu, and some behind-the-scenes videos on youtube)

set design/production:

the set design left everyone in awe, from the first day of filming to the last with all the detail and care that was put into it, and they all thought it was a shame when the sets had to be torn down (the space used to build sets for the first movie was only rented, but they hope sets built for the future films can be kept more permanently for others to see after filming)

the chefs and tradesmen working at different shops in the walled city in the backgrounds of shots were all actual professionals. while the cameras were rolling they would legitimately be roasting pork, making dumplings, etc (which means the sets were built to accommodate the required utilities as well)

all the porn tapes stacked against the walls of av's clinic are real vintage tapes from that decade. german grabbed some random ones once and popped them into the tv to test them and actual videos played

it took 3 hours for the makeup team to turn german into av each day, and after every single fight scene take they'd be rushing over to adjust his makeup. he gave a shoutout to the makeup crew in one interview for being so tireless

training and stuntwork:

the actors trained for a straight month before starting filming. as expected some of it was fight/choreography learning but a lot was also focused on building up stamina, as they might have had to do 20+ takes of a move in one day in order to get it right

sometimes they trained so much in one day that they ended up throwing up (raymond and german mostly)

most call sheets define a set time to start and a time to finish for each day. according to german the call sheets for this movie instead would say something like "06:00-END"

german helped with conceptualizing some fight choreography on set, as he's a professional stunt coordinator

raymond tripped and tumbled down a flight of stairs on the walled city set quite early on in shooting. he didn't get injured thankfully but his biggest regret is that no camera was there to capture it (it was 8-9am in the morning and too early for the behind-the-scenes cameras to have arrived)

tony got his jaw cut open while filming one of the final fights and had to get 12-15 stitches (he stressed the professionalism and attentiveness of the crew and how safety was managed on set, but accidents will still happen)

terrance was riding shin's motorcycle through a narrow corridor once, but he was going too slow and the bike tipped over. he fell and burned his leg on the exhaust pipe

there was one day where they filmed for over 20 hours. started during daytime, watched the sun go down, watched it come up again before they went home

sammo hung did a lot of his fight scene shots in one take and of course, the man is a master at this but it still left the younger actors gobsmacked

acting and filming things:

terrance was always eating ferrero rocher chocolates on set. the others got into it too, it boosted energy and morale (raymond also gifted terrance a box of them at some point)

louis koo likes to make small talk with people and doesn't want others to be afraid of him

the dialogue during the mahjong scenes with the walled city four was all improvised on the day of. neither the director nor raymond knew how to play mahjong so they had to figure out what play would be realistic while talking

terrance and louis's reactions during cyclone's death scene were filmed separately. terrance said louis was not only very encouraging when it was time for him to do his part, but he silently handed terrance some alcohol to drink before the cameras started rolling, to ease his nerves (it worked)

the last scene the walled city four filmed was the fishing hut scene where lok-kwan reunites with the other three. they all hugged one another and cried together once they'd wrapped

something else happened on wrap night between german, tony, and terrance that they cheerfully shush one another about whenever it's brought up, and raymond does not know what happened. german has mentioned that that night he got to see another side/a truer side of terrance though, whatever that means ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

a sequel is in the works for totw. the four aren't sure when things on that will start but all they need is for someone to say the word, and they'll be there. they're willing to wait for the screenwriters if it means they have a solid, well-written story to follow up the first film

hope this isnt weird but i've been having fun reading your eakwynn takes and i've become very interested in your vision for them !! so i also wanted to ask (if you haven't been asked this before): how are they when it comes to physical intimacy? what about verbal intimacy? which one does each of them prefer? (it can be something else that's not physical or verbal too)

Never feel bad for giving me more excuses to ramble about eakwynn. Getting asked about them is like opening Christmas presents to me!

Anyway- they're both very physical people. Eak cannot go one episode without pulling Towntrap around, and Owynn canonically both hugs Springtrap and fantasizes about hugging Fox, two guys he just met. Once they get comfortable with each other there is never a moment when they're not touching in some way. Not necessarily in the "making out literally everywhere" type of touching some teen couples have, but rather in a subtle way- like they're always holding hands or locking arms or leaning against each other in some way, but they save the more affectionate stuff like hugging or kissing for when they're alone. But yeah they very much prefer this one.

Verbal intimacy is more... Complicated. Since their relationship started out being antagonistic, they're both initially unwilling to open up to each other too much. Trying to get Owynn to talk about his feelings is already like pulling teeth without the whole messiness that came before their relationship, and Owynn's unwillingness to be honest with him made Eak respond in kind, which meant they were pretty stuck for a while. They kind of relied a lot on non verbal communication early on, because giving someone a gift or a hug in place of an apology was much easier for Owynn than actually saying the words "I'm sorry" out loud, but that can only get them so far, you know?

I think the main issue would be that there's an imbalance in how they see verbal intimacy: Owynn has been so closed off from everyone that to him, he's actually being too open with Eak! He's told Eak things about himself he's never told anyone else ever!! Meanwhile, Eak has two best friends that know basically everything about his life, so he notices really easily how often Owynn will want to avoid certain subjects, or evade difficult conversations, or bottle up his feelings- and it kind of pisses him off that Owynn is so insistent on pursuing him but still keeps him at arms length. It's very much like, dude, if you're so afraid of being vulnerable around me why are you even dating me!!!

It's kind of why I've always imagined eakwynn as the sort of ship where they break up and then later get back together, or they only last if they start dating later on rather than during the show or directly after it- I think Owynn is the type of guy who needs some time to mature and grow by himself before he can be a good partner. Get a job, experience more in life, make some friends hopefully. Eak is a patient guy, but he's not trusting enough to lower his defenses if he thinks Owynn isn't going to do the same for him, and he doesn't have enough emotional intelligence to make up for Owynn's utter lack of one. So better for him to wait until Owynn is at least somewhat capable of communicating to work on things lol. But they do work on things eventually!

But uhhhh yeah they're very good on the physical side, very not good on the verbal side 👍🏻

yeah, uh... no. we are not okay. this does happen, though i don't know the exact details of how it happens. our state government is stuffed full of stupid idiots who don't understand ANYTHING. so unfortunately we live in hell. florida is like, the united state of the united states in that when the rest of the world looks at usamerica as a whole and goes "what the fuck," usamericans look at florida and go "what the fuck." i want to leave this state asap. This place is hell. there is nothing good about this state unless you're a rich person 🙏
