Plant of the Day
Tuesday 30 January 2024
The foliage of Calathea species (zebra plant, rattlesnake plant, peacock plant, cathedral plant, prayer plan) is sensitive to cold and grows best in a warm, moist atmosphere. Throughout the course of the day, these plants move their leaves around known as nyctinasty.

Guys… I got a calathea…
My one plant rule was “no calatheas” but I got a calathea. Now, in all fairness, it was $3 and was on the sale table outside. So if it dies I feel like I can blame it on that

Happy New Year :D time for plant updates!!!
Tumblr media
I split up my calathea rattlesnake since she was getting so big i just thought it would look better and I had the extra space, air plant is also doing well i actually ordered another one bc my mom bought a little snowman air plant holder for like ¢80 so like why not? :3 not sure about the tiger tooth aloe they were getting a bit stressed in my other light so they're on my dimmer shelf but they just seem not so good :[
Also on this shelf but not in the picture, I've started cucumber plants :D they're still very little just starting their first leaves but they are here
Tumblr media
The spiders are still doing good :D my cat did accidently kick them over the other day but they'll be okay they are strong:)
Sedum seems to be struggling, they also got kicked over a couple weeks ago but they are not handling it well, the pilea is also not doing so well but I'm not sure why
Tumblr media
On the same shelf is my basil:D she's doing so great and she's started to smell like basil!!! It's so cool definitely one of my favorites rn
My regular aloe is also getting a little stressed by the light so I might move them if it seems to be slowing their growth or anything
My VSOH is fine, they're not growing very much right now but I think it's just because of the winter
Lithop is doing its lithop things :)
I've been trying to start daisies and catnip but I'm kinda struggling with growing smaller seedlings at the moment, big ones like sunflower and cucumber and even the basil started pretty easily but I just can't really get the daisies and catnip to grow :/
Tumblr media
SUNFLOWER 🌻💥
they've been shadowing the radish a bit but they are growing so well :DD so proud of them
Thanku for reading goodbye now :3

Watered and fertilised all my plants yesterday and I’m frankly offended they haven’t doubled in size overnight.

I led a lovely afternoon guided nature tour at the Cutthroat Climb and Teal Slough trails at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge! It was a nice break from the mayhem of packing the moving truck with my furniture and whatever else we can fit in there. There's still a lot to be done, but we're making good progress, and will haul things to Portland Sunday. Wish us luck!
Also, I'd love to make some plans for some tours once I get settled in in PDX, so if you've been wanting to book me for a private tour, drop me a PM!

19 July 2024 - Friday Field Notes
Tumblr media
The sky doing some half and half. This was a storm front that ended up rolling further north. I will attest, every time, that the sky here just hits different.

On the left, the baby Robins at work. It's only been a week/week and a half but it's crazy to see how much they've grown! Mama has been feeding them well.
On the right, Robin fledgling that was hanging out by the side of my house. Still trying to figure out how to fly, but they're getting there. Tail feathers haven't fully grown in yet. Watched Mom feed them a grasshopper a little later.

Playtime with Bullsnake. He did not want to hold still for pictures.

First time in a month that I've gone out to do some field restoration work. Of course, ten minutes after I say I haven't seen a snake all season I get rattled at by this Prairie Rattlesnake.
Tumblr media
Swainson's Hawk eating breakfast off the side of the trail.
Tumblr media
Ten-lined June Beetle! A type of scarab beetle, they hiss if you bother them.
Tumblr media
Forgot I planted this Rocky Mountain Bee Plant at work and didn't realize what it was (but I kept watering it) until the flowers started forming last week lol. It's ginormous. Anyone else see the lil green solitary bee?

I don't care what anyone says, I think watching grass grow is pretty exciting.
First one is Blue Grama (aka Grandma's Eyelashes and the state grass of Colorado - the flowers once they've gone to seed do look like false eyelashes). The second is some Buffalo Grass that I planted around the patio area I installed in my front yard. I slapped some concrete pavers down and seeded grass in between them, so once the grass gets established it should help stabilize the soil, keep the pavers in place, and help keep that area cooler. I put jute down for erosion control in the meantime but the grass is doing a bang up job of making it obsolete.
Anyway, hope you all are getting some rest. Feels like it's been a rough week for everyone, so hang in there. Catch you next time on the prairie!

Plant of the Day
Sunday 6 August 2023
In this sunny, dry sunken garden the Eryngium yuccifolium (button eryngo, button snakeroot, rattlesnake-master) was producing branched stems of small, white flower-heads. The base of this evergreen perennial forms a clump of bluish-green, strap-shaped leaves.
