his faith in religion and hope that his parents care about him in some way allows him to survive to adulthood but it also sets him back as a person because he was blinded by his own convictions and internalized homophobia. he's also gullible.

-frank : thief of space (prospit)

the sleazy businessman who fund the gang's schemes. inadvertently stuns the twins capability for personal growth and chance to have a new beginning outside of their dysfunctional upbringing by being an absent parent but coming back to them when theyre adults. struggles with feelings of stagnation and unfulfillment. egg motifs.

This is from my novel-in-progress. I'll try not to over-explain, but: it's loosely based on events from my own life (with a lot of straight-up fiction thrown in), and stylistically I'm aiming for something like "if Kathy Acker wrote Jack Kerouac's On the Road." There are the main narrative sections (which hew more closely to the structure of OtR), but then there are all these interludes and meta-fictional weirdnesses and... Anyway, this is one of the main narrative sections.

I buzzed her in, and she said: “And I brought a joint. I thought maybe you’d wanna get high.” Hell yeah, I wanted to get high. “Let’s go out,” I said, grabbing my jacket. I knew we couldn’t talk or smoke like we wanted in front of my boyfriend, who sat noodling around on his guitar in the next room. He’d take one look at Rat Hole and decide she was a bad influence, and he hated weed, too. We headed east on Irving Park Road, towards the Brown Line Stop. Rat Hole cupped her hand around the flame of her green lighter and lit the joint, took a puff, passed it to me. We walked in silence for a bit, passing the joint back and forth, keeping an eye out for cops. Soon everything was a stoned symphony of sound and color, the headlights of passing cars bending and refracting in our blurry vision, their tires wsssshhhing over the wet, salty streets. We got so high we forgot it was still cold; our blood was warm and everything felt like spring. We took the el to Belmont Ave. and it was Rat Hole’s first time on Belmont, and ever after that place became a symbol of our friendship. I thought of my ode to Belmont; the night was like a living version of it. They were all there: punks with six-inch tall Day-Glo mohicans, Jesus People proselytizing, drag queens in their feathers and spangles, goths in their big black boots, suburban spare changers, pickpockets and prostitutes in the Punkin’ Donuts parking lot, and all the sounds, bass booming behind doors of dance clubs, car horns and stereos and hey fuck you, buddy! And all the smells—donut grease, car exhaust, smoke (sewer, cigar, incense), hot dog water, deep dish pizza, grime—an Eau d’ Belmont.

My Musing of Ribbon - Ribbon in K64 Cutscenes and Other Official Material

So if you've ever read my fanfic "Star, Angel, Crystal" or seen my Kirby 64 fanart, you might've found out that I have a quite unconventional characterization of a certain cute fairy—Ribbon from Kirby 64. This post would be focus on how I see Ribbon in in-game materials, and perhaps one day I might talk about Ribbon's characterization in the fanfic itself.

Warning: This post would also include me screaming at a fictional character for being cute because we're talking about Ribbon.

Warning 2: This post isn't mean to invalidate other interpretation of Ribbon's characterization, but rather than me validating my own yee yee ass interpretation. We hug all flavors of Ribbon in Ribbon Land.

I don't really know the fuck I am doing as I am now screenshotting sadge Ribbon and giggling my arse.

I think both (Ribbon being afraid of Dark Matter vs Ribbon being distraught at her homeland's state) are valid and can co-exist. But my reading would be leaned toward distraught, as she definitely cares about her friends. Like I think she was genuinely afraid for her friends when she saw a dark cloud engulfing your homeland.

As for what expression Ribbon would wear if you draw vs Zero Two fanart... it's up to personal interpretation but I might one day draw a very pissed Ribbon carrying Kirby.

Probably would be this pissed.

My reading for this small moment is she was checking if Kirby and Dee were about to tumble but you can also argue she was just chatting with them

So Kirby 64 has many slapstick humors like the gang using Kirby as a springboard, Kirby being hit by his own Warp Star... And just Kirby being hit in general. That said, I think Ribbon in particular has the most moments of she rushing to others to check if there are alright. Such a sweetheart. Would hug.

She would keep you at arm length despite being nice

LOL why was she so chill when a HUGE ahh wave was about to hit?

In Kirby 64, the gang had group bonding activities a lot, like the picnic at the end of Rock Star and the throwing stones competition at the end of Aqua Star. If you observe closely, Ribbon seldom joined such team activities, like she was the only one not eating in the picnic scene, and she didn't partake in the stone-throwing either.

So I think she is generally more reserved, even distanced, though I can see the arguments that she A. Might be a member of royalty B. Is the newest member in the gang depending on whether you accept "Adeleine = Ado" headcanon or C. She had eaten a bug before the Rock Star cutscene.

But I think writing Ribbon as an introvert would be my go-to because Kirby is definitely an extrovert.

Also see this Easter egg picture in Star Allies, she positioned herself the most left in this half-circle/half-ring line because she is left-handed. So she sat the most left to prevent bothering others, which is a common issue for lefties as Lefties often have this awkward thing where their left hands bumps into the right hand of the person next to them... While there are literally a dark knight and a rat she didn't know too well.

Yes I head canon Adeleine initiated this group bonding activity rather than Ribbon and Ribbon was there out of politeness and I will die on this hill—

Personally, I Don't Think Ribbon is A Member of Royalty

I think she is probably just a higher-ranking servant rather than the princess, although I would still hug Queen Ribbon. Her mannerisms, while more distanced than others in the gang, don't radiate "Yes I am a prince/princess" like Prince Fluff.

Plus, I think making Ribbon too important during K64 opening cutscenes would undercut her bravery. I would prefer that she was just naturally brave rather than being TOO important, which is the core of her character—A reluctant hero who chooses to step up not because she is special or powerful, but because she HAS to.

The ending kiss?

So if you dig up some older Kirby 64 material, I think it reads more like Kirby is into Ribbon rather than the other way around. I know this would be bad news for "Kirby is ace/aro" gang, but I would say one can argue 2000s media was allergic to platonic relationships in general. It's 2024, and Kirby is our ally and he is gender-less anyway.

THAT SAID, nowadays it's very rare to see Kirby/Ribbon is written in the way that Kirby has feelings much earlier than Ribbon, and "Kirby is oblivious to Ribbon's feelings" is a common route. I take that route as well to be fair, but my reading is more like this: She wasn't entirely sure about her feelings for Kirby, as she kissed Kirby out of gratitude, guilt of burdening him, and many emotions altogether.

Conclusion

My reading of Ribbon is that she is nice and would rush to you if you tumble, but will keep you at arm length. Also she is brave as fuck.

frank is unknowingly financially aiding both sides. because. he gives his son money which he gives a cut to the gang. and then he restocks charlies first aid kit whenever it gets low bc they still roomies

frank knows about charlies superpowers but thinks everyone else already knows so he hasn't said anything LMAO (charlie didn't tell him, he's just rly bad at hiding his stuff in the apartment)

charlie works with ben and artemis who also have superpowers because they're my fave side characters

one time while the rest of the gang is in desperate need of being saved, charlie and ben are at the base playing with gi joes while artemis narrates their story dramatically. i love them

mac is in fact a damsel in distress that constantly gets saved heroically by charlie (in disguise) and mac is so confused how this short man can lift him so easily

charlie does not talk while on vigilante duties because his voice is so goddamn recognizable.

he knows sign language from when he went nonverbal as a kid though so he uses that to communicate when he can

I thought of a Wonderland Remix for NSR, I thought of Eve being based off of the White Rabbit, 1010 being the Card Soldiers, Sayu being the Mad Hatter, Yinu and Mama being the Caterpillar, DJ SS being the Cheshire Cat, and Tatiana being the Queen.

Hmm, interesting, though I don't feel like all those roles really fit those characters.

If we are just going off of like, costumes and the NSR Megastars doing a collaborative effort as an event. I would say you are right with 1010 being the card soldiers and Tatiana being the Queen of Hearts.

I do think Eve being either the Cheshire Cat or the Caterpillar makes more sense, though Yinu being the Cheshire Cat is also a possibility but I see her more as the White Rabbit.

DJSS being the Cheshire Cat doesn't really fit in my head. Him being the Caterpillar makes more sense to me. Same thing with Sayu being the Mad Hatter. I see the Club as being more of the Flowers, but I will go into that more later. For this scenario I think the only thing that can fit is the Mad Hatter right now.

So I would change it to be:

-DJSS: Caterpillar

-Sayu: Mad Hatter

-Yinu: White Rabbit

-1010: Card Soldiers

-Eve: Cheshire Cat

-Tatiana: Queen of Hearts

And all of that just for if this is a publicity stunt, which I assume you were going for. Though I have made 3 scenarios where if it was an AU of NSR x Alice in Wonderland with who would be who.

(I am basing this off of the Disney cartoon as I have not read the book or watched the live action version. Anyway, more under the cut).

[Also I forget the scenes in which Alice meets all these people so bare with me]

Scenario 1: Mayday

First scenario I have it with Mayday taking on the role of Alice and Eve would be her sister/caretaker. Yinu would be the White Rabbit in this case that Mayday chases after while Kliff would be the Cheshire Cat.

Mama would be the flowers (or at least the lead flower/rose) that shoos Mayday away. While 1010 would be Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (and a few other Tweedles lol).

Myster Man would be the Dodo that pushes the Sayu Crew (who are a group of Chimney Sweeps and take the place of Bill the Lizard) into the house to get an oversized Mayday out of it.

The Mad Hatter would be Zuke while the March Hare would be DK West. Ellie would probably be the mouse or rat or whatever is in the teapot that freaks out.

DJSS would be the caterpillar in this case as I see him getting very upset at Mayday for the way she speaks.

Finally, Tatiana would be the Queen of Hearts, Neon J would be the King of Hearts, and the Sayu Club would be the Card soldiers (but like a mermaid themed set of card or something, idk).

Scenario 2: Yinu

This one would have Yinu as Alice with Tatiana being her caretaker. Neon J would be the White Rabbit that Yinu chases and Mayday as the Cheshire Cat.

The Flowers would be the whole of the Sayu Club while West and Zuke take on the Tweedles roles.

DJSS would be the Dodo that pushes Kliff (taking the place of Bill the Lizard) into the Chimney.

The Mad Hatter and March Hare would both be played by the Sayu Crew. I don't know who or what would be the rat/mouse.

Eve would be the caterpillar as I just feel like that role fits her the most in this scenario.

And finally, Mama would be the Queen of Hearts, Papa the King of Hearts, and 1010 as the Card Soldiers.

Scenario 3: Eve

This one is probably the least correct with characters matching roles because I just didn't want to double up characters for the same roles I already did before.

Anyway, this one would have Eve as Alice with her casing after Kliff as the White Rabbit. Yinu would be the Cheshire Cat in this version.

1010 would take on the Flowers' roles while Tweedle Dee and Dum would be played by the Sayu Club.

Tatiana is the Dodo that stuffs DK West as Bill the Lizard into the chimney.

Then the Mad Hatter would be Neon J while the March Hare is played by DJSS. Rat/Mouse again, I do not know this one.

Mystery Man would be the Caterpillar, just mainly because I needed to put him somewhere. he probably seems like a smoker lol.

Finally, Mayday is the Queen of Hearts while Zuke is the King of Hearts. Then the Sayu Crew would be the Card Soldiers as I have no other place to put them.

Scenario 4: True to Roles (kinda)

So with this one, which I didn't think I was going to do. I want to try and give characters more realistic roles just based off of personality. This will just be in list form and will have multiple people for roles if they fit. [Excuse the weird order]

-Alice: Mayday/Yinu/Tila

-Caterpillar: Eve/DJSS

-Cheshire Cat: Yinu/Kliff

-White Rabbit: Yinu/Zuke/Neon J

-Tweedle Dee/Dum: 1010/(West+Zuke)/(Mayday+Zuke)

-Mad Hatter: Zuke/Neon J/Sayu Crew

-March Hare: West/DJSS/Sayu Crew

-Queen of Hearts: Tatiana/Mama/Eve

-King of Hearts: Mystery Man/Neon J/Papa

-Card Soldiers: 1010

-Alice's Sister: Tatiana/Mama

-Bill the Lizard: Kliff/Zuke

-Dodo (the bird): Tatiana/Mystery Man/West

-Flowers: Eve/Sayu Club/(Mama+Yinu)
