This is unrelated to the blog's subject, but I'm SUPER hyped about this upcoming indie game called Critter Cove and I've got some super cool news; I got to give the devs some critter designs to show up as Townies you can invite to live in your town!

This isn't even all of them-- in total I've made well over 40 designs that they're gonna pick and choose from. These ones are just some of my favorites.

This character creator is CRAZY good. It's hard to find animals you can't make. Cow, squid, human, raptor, duck, I was even able to make a half-decent Anomalocaris up there. The ones that are difficult to make, like giraffes, horses, and insects, are actually planned to be added in soon.

Critter Cove plays like a mix between Animal Crossing and Subnautica. You sail around to collect scrap from the remains of sunken ruins, rebuild a rundown town on a polluted island, and make it appealing for both residents and visitors. There's also a plan to add a museum feature, dozens of islands, fishing mechanics, and even co-op in the future.

(but co-op will only come if the game's enough of a hit, which is why I'm shamelessly plugging it lmaoo)

It's launching into Early Access on September 10th, but it's got a VERY generous free demo which is only supposed to be "the first two hours" of the game...

...and I'm clocking 61.

(yes everyone this is part of the reason why ive been quiet lately. its a good game, man. i cant help it. im going coconuts.)

Progression stops when you re-build the cafe, but you can keep playing, sailing around, running quests, and doing some simple gardening. Your progress rolls over into Early Access too, so you don't have to worry about losing your townies, clothes, structures, etc.

For all my designs I've got a free key, but it's gonna be launching somewhere in the 20 - 30 USD price range. I can't recommend the demo enough, but even just wishlisting it on Steam boosts their metrics and gets them in front of more people!

if we assume warframes have some amount of biological function rather than being meat suits, it would only stand that in the process of becoming protoframes, the hex would not only change appearance-wise but the way their bodies FUNCTION would change as well as their behavior. I don't have solid ideas for everyone YET, BUT i'll elaborate on what i have so far below...

we don't have a lot of solid info about how cyte-09's kit would work, but being that he's a sniper-centric frame, it makes sense that quincy would start to subconsciously adapt to that 'ambush predator' function, in terms of behavior and also metabolism.

instinctually he feels safest/most comfortable when he's somewhere High Up and Isolated. he likes a vantage point, not much else to it. randomly feeling compelled to climb on top of shit and Perch even outside of patrols while just hanging out because it just feels more secure

bradymetabolic -- his 'natural' state is objectively slowed down in comparison to a normal human being, his resting heartrate is slow his body temp tends to be lower and he can go considerably longer in between meals if he isn't actively making an effort to eat on a schedule. his body is rewiring itself to be best suited towards finding a vantage point and lying in wait, staying as still as possible and expending as little energy as he can until the moment is just right.

HOWEVER, the moment something triggers him to act fast (usually in combat situations although its technically a 'prey response') his metabolism will kick into overdrive and he strikes FAST. for the brief period where he's active, heart rate and body temp shoot up and he burns through however much energy he's been storing in the interim. once the adrenaline wears off, though, he's back to business as usual. if he's in a high-energy situation for an extended amount of time, though, he runs the risk of exhausting himself, hyperventilating, or overheating.

tends to blink less than it seems like he should and picks up a habit of unintentionally holding his breath. trigger finger twitches unintentionally when he's focused on something/someone in a way that kinda resembles how dart frogs will tap their toes while hunting or how the raptors in jurassic park click their claws on the ground. develops and exaggerated freeze response -- when something startles him when he isnt expecting it, he goes completely stock still in an attempt to 'blend in' and wait out the threat.

on the opposite end, amir adopts a fucking hummingbird metabolism. he runs hot and fast and needs to eat a lot more than you would expect because his body is CONSTANTLY. GOING. he's somewhere int he middle between regular human and obligate nectar-eater -- he processes sugars WAY faster/easier than normal and is pretty dependent on them for energy in the immediate moment, although he does still have the capacity to store longer-lasting energy for later rather than having to eat every thirty minutes lest he starve to death. the more active he is, the more demand is on him, though and he is VERY fucking active. he's built to be on the move 24/7 now, and gets really antsy when 'at rest' because even when wholly idle his body burns energy like a motherfucker and it makes him restless. constantly craving sweet things because his body is demanding sugar NOW or we are going to DIE (this is not true, he's mostly being dramatic, but he DOES feel adverse effects from lack of food or water much sooner than he normally would)

can take short rests that are basically like power naps where he sleeps "normal", but when he actually Sleep sleeps he goes into a torpor state to preserve his energy, slowing down and dropping his body temp and it takes him between 20min to an hour to actually Wake Up completely. does not like doing this but while his body is meant to be constantly moving, his brain still runs on a human schedule and he Needs to get actual sleep. he needs to hard reboot every couple days or else he starts fighting demons. you know how it is.

aside from inconvenient desires to eat raw meat/random animals (imagining excal as an obligate carnivore just feels right), arthur isn't too METABOLICALLY different from the average human, but behaviorally he is fighting for his life. in contrast to quincy preferring open, elevated spaces, arthur is compelled to seek out dark tight enclosed spaces and hole up like a sick animal looking for a place to die (he's fine, but the way he's always stressing out crosses some wires in his brain and makes him Feel like he's dying)

you can tell when arthur and quincy have been getting on eachothers nerves or arguing because they will Immediately retreat to their respective territories to Sulk (quincy starts climbing on top of the stage light scaffolding, arthur is in the security office trying to find a dignified way to crawl under a table). it's objectively really funny to witness. they both do this when theyre in bad moods but when theyre BOTH doing it the chance of it being coincidence is very very low

both arthur and eleanor are VERY catlike, not really in a cutesy fun 'uwu nya' way, but in a 'bites people and knocks shit over and gets random bursts of energy at ungodly hours and feels compelled to chase things that move like prey' way . eleanor leans into this and does not care, she is biting you as a show of affection and you WILL accept that. arthur hates it and suppresses it at all times. catboy instincts calling to him like the green goblin mask 24/7

in tandem with the 'aoi's teeth are more like a squid beak and are dark in color because they're reinforced with metal' hc ive discussed before, i feel like she might feel the urge to try and Consume metallics somehow to feed that process. or maybe her constant melting down and playing with metal is how she assimilates it. not sure yet

i have not many ideas regarding trinity or lettie yet because i almost never play trin and dont have a good handle on how her kit would translate to biological functions LMFAOO im so sorry girl i love you so much but im still chewing on this one. welcome to ideas!

The Puyo characters that didn't come back

And why they didn't. Massive speculation admittedly on my part. Making it a rule to not include characters strictly MadouMono exclusives, because we know they have copyright shenanigans going on.

I put these in the order of appearance, so it starts from OPP, Tsu, Nazo Puyo, and then Box.

Zombie

Probably the most talked about one with English speaking fans in terms of non-returners. It's simply because he was the least popular amongst Japanese fans, ranking extremely low. It's a case of a character being more appealing for overseas fans thanks to Tsu's demo stages.

Honestly, all they have to do to make him more palatable beyond "the stinky guy who spills his guts" is to play up the death metal thing. Make him a musician, but one that's actually successful (unlike Harpy), there's even an old 4koma where he proves to be better at playing the flute than Panotty, lol. That would make him a bit more cute and less creepy/gross.

Edit: Huh… actually, a zombie that plays guitar and likes death metal… that would just be Puyo Puyo's answer to Lord Raptor, wouldn't it?

Sukiyapodes

Unlike Zombie, I actually cannot find a reason as to why this character was excluded. Maybe the current Puyo artists don't know how to draw feet? Up to you to speculate on this one.

Nomi

I'm thinking SEGA had no idea what his alts would be if he got into Puyo Quest. Kinda hard to do anything beyond zooming in on the little guy like ARS did. A shame, because he's a funny lil' guy.

Mini Zombie

Same reasons as zombie, unpopular and gross, but has more "cute appeal" than his older counterpart and speaks with some honorifics in a couple of games.

He doesn't have the death metal interest that Zombie has, so there's less to do with his personality besides speech quirks and being stinky. Funnily enough though, the suwa3 website hosting all the character info actually does have the Mini Zombie x Merigu (Banshee Trio member) ship listed! I think it's the only mook/small fry pairing?

It's a cute interaction based entirely on old art… I think expanding on Mini Zombie having a friendship with the Banshee Trio would be a fun idea.

Dragon

I have no idea why this character didn't return. They are cute, marketable, etc. Without this character, Chico feels rather empty.

Chico was a character that already suffered from being introduced way too late into Compile's run and appearing late/not very helpful in Puyo Puyo~n (her abilities can only be used for two stages…) By bringing Dragon back into Quest, there could have been more flavor text.

It's possible that the character was redundant due to other dragon themed cast members with similar names, like Draco and Kodomo Dragon.

In fact, maybe just Kodomo Dragon by himself, creating a child and dragon duo, was enough for Chico and Dragon to not be one…

Choppun (content warning)

Okay so, first and foremost, Choppun is based on a Compile staff member. But so is Nasu Grave, so we all know that connection isn't enough to keep him out.

But… the bigger Zoh in the room (lol) is the fact that uh, Choppun is just… straight up a lolicon? Like, besides the skirt flipping shenanigans in the GameGear games, he is a grown man with a child but actively prefers girls with "flat chests" and hates large boobs according to various other pieces of media.

That's not gonna fly, no matter what. Sure, SEGA in theory could just… make him a silly bisexual cosplayer like he is in some of the manga (where he seems to like Satan and Incubus' attention) but it may not go over well either.

On a semi-related note, Compile had an eroge division and the artist for the GameGear version of Madou 3 (Choppun's debut) left Compile to make adult games, lmao.

Wraith

Much like Dragon, this may simply be a case of redundancy. Why add another ghost character when we have Yu, Rei, and Will-O-Wisp? Especially since she's another "sheet ghost" character.

There was a solution in the form of the alternate character designs, where Wraith, without her sheet, appears to be a beautiful ghost girl.

Water Element

Like Succubus, this character would be "too sexy" and there's possibly copyright issues with the Playboy bunny uniform. On top of that, she's an alcoholic…

I do wish this character came back, at least maybe with a hefty redesign and no rabbit suit if it was a problem. (they overhauled Succubus, perhaps a little too much imo) It'd be nice to keep her as another rival character for Rulue-

Or Ragnus, if one wants to go by the Shin Madou novels they were enemies there. (with Water Element trying to seduce him)

Barry de Babine

Compile copyright for this one. He's definitely not coming back.

For the better honestly, I don't care for this character at all. He's a cheeky reference to JUMP HERO but it never really worked imo. Phased out in favor of Ragnus and I wouldn't have it any other way. (sorry Barry fans)

Vampire

I think Puyo Quest putting in their own original pretty boy vampire character sadly put a stop to Demon Servant reuniting with this guy (as well as the previously mentioned Water Element).

It's unfortunate, because I actually adore his design. Super adorable.

Barbegazi

Very unpopular, gross, and kind of "ugly". Not at all appealing for Japanese fans. His schtick was sneezing on the other characters (Arle and Rulue).

I think he's neat, but man is he a pain in the ass to fight in Madou Monogatari when he gives you a cold! Asshole. I don't say "good riddance" like I do with Barry but I don't particularly mourn him like I do with Zombie, Vampire, and Dragon.

I'm sure there are old man/oji-san enjoyers who may like him, maybe…?

Edit: When I read the suwa3 website, the Japanese fans seem to find this character annoying and they hate fighting him. WOW. 😭 That's a first!

Leviathan

Very obscure, only appears in two games as a Lord of the Dragons. Although mostly a larger version of Dragon in Hanamaru, he has a totally distinct design in Nazo Puyo Tsu!

I think he's kind of neat and adorable… yes, he should come back if possible.

Goddess of Spacetime

I think this one is potentially stuck under Compile's copyright thumb. She appears in the manual of Puyo Puyo, but appears in the GBC version of SUN and as a statue in Nazo Puyo Tsu.

Bringing this character back might ruin her mystique unfortunately. It seems Marle and Squares from Puyo Tetris 2 kinda succeeded her position.

Merrow & Muhoho

I'm putting these two together because you both encounter them in Puyo Box as reskins of the more popular Tsu characters. (Serilly and Nohoho respectively)

Merrow is very redundant, she has the same color scheme as Ocean Prince/Salde and is an angrier/arrogant Serilly.

Muhoho (pardon me, it may not be correct/ambiguous, but I will use feminine pronouns for this character) could have been a neat alt skin for Nohoho though. She's different enough in personality compared to him. More of a sweetheart who likes cute things such as flowers, and less of a con artist.

And finally…

Dark Witch

There may be a copyright issue with this one, I heard that was the reason for Doppelganger Schezo's name being changed to Dark Schezo in Quest…

Perhaps they could bring her back the way they did for Doppel Schezo and rename her "Wicked Witch" or "Nightmare Witch", since she came from Witch's dreams! Lemme know which witch rename you like more, lol.

The character's name is Lunara, a black and white raptor girl that is a recurring minor character.

She was created by a Snoot community member that's a trans woman, and was designed by one of the game's artists. The artist in question also drew a ref sheet of Lunara naked to show that she's a trans woman.

There are conflicting reports here. One is that Lunara was designed to be trans from the start, stated by both the artist and the creator. The other (stated by Cavemanon in their "response" piece) is that Lunara was designed to be cis by another artist, but was secretly hijacked to be made trans. Considering Cavemanon's track record on anti-trans statements, including towards me, I do not believe them.

The trans woman Lunara design is what was used in the game's official demo in May 2023 and was in the game's release date trailer (Feb 7, 2024), which was a week before the game was set to launch (Feb 14). That same day, the reference sheet showing Lunara naked was leaked.

When Wani launched, Lunara's design was different from the trailer. She was given larger breasts, narrower shoulders, and longer legs. You can compare them below:

This change was brought up in Caliber's exposé on Cavemanon, which went up two weeks after Wani's release. Cavemanon responded with the "hijacked design" accusation, and said this about the design changes:

Lunara's creator has stated she's fine with people choosing to interpret Lunara either way they like, but that hasn't stopped Snoot fans from attacking her, including Nerd (head of Cavemanon and creator of Snoot), who misgendered her and called her a "loser attentionwhore [sic] trying to get a crumb of relevance".

so we just going to show you some of the things that we made for competition at the moment..

but me and old have a problem of quantity over quality.

so I got a list of things that we made.

starting with me.

ETC guns. They use a small electrical pulse to set off a rapid chemical reaction.

The Ionizer. Strips off every electron in a substance. Without electrons, chemistry fails in a single instance. The disconnected soup of nuclei protons repel each other and blast out in every direction. Instant disintegration.

puppet Darts: darts that launch an attack on the nervous system of them, causing a brief period of paralysis, then taking over the bodily, causing them to "switch sides".

joy. A sword that fires an inductance beam which stimulates the pleasure center of the brain, creating an instant feeling of total pure joy, and ecstasy. It's used to render threatening opponents completely helpless.

Heal gun. A simple device that stimulates cell growth. people always forget that cancer is a cell.

now old things.

Time Prison. Time flows slower when near large gravitational fields. Localize it, and they slow to a crawl, and you can dance circles around them. by using kugelblitz. kugelblitz are tiny blackhole, created by concentrated photons, that blasts out massive amounts of Hawking Radiation

De-evolving gun. Turn humans to chimp-like things, and chicken to a raptor is always fun. "by using the fact that you can send bodies back and forth through time he did both at the same time to evolve the body backwards through time" he wrote

time bomb. a battlefield weapon that would enclose thing in a accelerated temporal zone. a month would pass in a second, and they might starve to death. "white kugelblitz" is all that's written

Chrono-Bullet. A bullet that traveling through time, allowing it to hit its target from different angles in time.

Temporal Anchor. that creates a fixed point in time. that point, effectively allowing for a "do-over" nearly for all time.

Chrono-Laser. A laser weapon that can selectively age or reverse the age of its target. "kugelblitz and laser guidance" that makes less sense then a white kugelblitz but okay.

lastly and the reason why he's not here. River Glass. River Glass is a mix between a shotgun, a rifle and a old paddle. it abuse the fact that if you use improper time travel it will leave a broken glass like tear in space, turns out you can pick it up. it has two modes. shotgun mode was just launches the glass and Demo Man mode which falls under the bulb that explodes with the glass. and it's enough to be used as a baseball bat in case he runs the bullet.

Unlike Unpacking where you adhere to a single narrative storyline, you can choose to steer your life in Momento. This is done by simply choosing the items you wish to keep to fill your space.

Momento features beautiful hand-drawn art and whimsical spaces for you to personalise and outside of the story driven campaign is a creative mode. You can collect furnishing and decor through the game and use them to build your very own room and story.

And yes. Once more- there is a cat you can pet. 

3. Croakwood by Texel Raptor 

Release Date: TBA 

Town building but frogs. At least, that’s how I assume the pitch meeting for this game went. 

Croakwood is a town building and management game where you get to design structures, plan out this adorable froggy town and explore the ancient forest beyond. The town building aspect of the game utilises a piece-based building design system which means endless creative possibilities. 

Help your local amphibian population settle in using something called the Frog Market. What is it? I have no idea but I’m excited at the thought of a little frog based economy. 

As you progress through the game, you unlock new areas and builds by completing goals to further develop your froggy utopia. And there is also the promise of secrets to be uncovered within the wild forests that surround your frog lands. 

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any cats but there are so many frogs. 

4. Vampire Rancher by borispixel

Release Date: 2024

I try to avoid a cliche but let’s get it out of the way here: Vampire Rancher is like Stardew Valley but you are a vampire. Taking place in the Wild West, you’re not only expected to tend to your crops (and humans!) but you will manage the shops and saloons by gathering materials and crafting them. 

Visitors will roll into town the more you work to improve it which is excellent for the town’s dying economy bla bla bla- eat them. 

Eat the tourists. 

But no, really- while you play this cozy game and live your best life in the countryside, you are still a vampire and these tourists will be your main source of blood. 

The two ways to improve your character can be found in the usual skill trees that are unlocked via visitor satisfaction and something called “Crimson Gold” which is blood essence gathered from visitors. The latter allows you to unlock special vampire powers like bat transformations or resistance to garlic! Because what is a life without garlic bread really. 

As of right now, there is no news of cats but you will have access to chickens. Which are like cats but dumber. 

5. Tiny Bookshop by neoludic games

Release Date: TBA (Demo available on Steam) 

Tiny Bookshop is a game for the bookworm who dreams of escaping the rat race to open a little bookstore in beautiful locations. 

As an adorably cozy management game, Tiny Bookshop does have a simple story that drives the game onward. The mechanics are simple- decorate your little bookstore on wheels with items you can collect in game and stock your shelves with a variety of books. You get to know the locals of this town of Bookstonbury and can make recommendations to customers. 

Different spots around town may attract different customers and you can move your little caravan about with you, exploring the town and learning more about its long history. 

Based on the demo, there is a dog you can pet.
