264: Nick Lowe // Labour of Lust

Labour of Lust is the “other” classic Nick Lowe record. Where predecessor Jesus of Cool made a point of showcasing Lowe as a chameleonic auteur who could glibly master a half-dozen different genres without breaking a sweat, Labour’s more humble legend rests on simply being a very good collection of power pop songs that draw on early rock ‘n’ roll and honky tonk country for inspiration. There are only a handful of songs I’d argue are stone classics (“Cruel to Be Kind,” “Without Love,” and perhaps “Endless Grey Ribbon”), but the album is never less than a sheer pleasure to listen to, bashed out with his band Rockpile in the tough-but-sweet style Lowe had pioneered as the house producer at Stiff. Honestly, being a power pop fan often involves making yourself giddy over bands who suck much more frequently than they are good just so you have something new to listen to, but then you listen to a run of irresistible bops like the trio that closes this LP (“Without Love,” “Dose of You,” “Love So Fine”) and you wonder why you waste your time with the second-grade fresh stuff.

Lowe’s had a long career as a reputed master songwriter despite most critics being lukewarm on most of the music he released between 1981 and his silver fox 1994 comeback The Impossible Bird. Labour of Lust benefits from the fact that, with the exception of Rockpile’s Seconds of Pleasure from the following year, Lowe never really recorded another set of music in the style that had made him modestly famous in the first place. Lowe’s ‘80s work is somewhat betrayed by its dated production, and though there are some excellent tunes scattered across those records, none of it packs quite the satisfaction his first two solo platters (and the period’s singles and EPs) so generously provide. Today, Lowe is a can’t-miss live act, possibly the coolest man in the music industry, and an amiably sexy septuagenarian. He’s doing great, and it’s the existence of records like this in his back catalogue that allow him to stay that way.
