This week marks the anniversary of the death of animator, producer William Hanna (July 14, 1910 – March 22, 2001). For me that can only mean one thing – it’s time to reminisce about one of my all-time favorite cartoons – and sitcoms, for that matter – The Flintstones.
William Hanna and partner Joseph Barbera became one of the truly legendary pairings in animation history. Together Hanna and Barbera created The Flintstones and a slew of other iconic characters that have been hugely popular and influential since the 1950s. To show their sustaining power here’s an entry on DC Comics from last year focusing on new comic books to be released based on reimaginings of several Hanna-Barbera characters and stories. I’m not much into comic books so this launch may have already happened. As I perused a collection of classic Hanna-Barbera comic books though I realized I’d absolutely love to own some of them. Practically every single classic character had his own comic book series with the Parade series featuring all of them.
Anyway – the characters that launched Hanna-Barbera Productions in the 1950s include Yogi Bear and his Emmy Award-winning series (1958-1962), Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw McGraw. In the 1960s they brought us The Jetsons in a prime-time slot during the 1962-1963 season, The Magilla Gorilla Show, Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-Long, Punkin’ Puss and Mushmouse, Scooby-Doo and many more.
Of all the shows produced by Hanna-Barbera, however, my absolute favorite is The Flintstones, a sit-com-style animated series influenced by The Honeymooners, another show I adore. I grew up watching Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty along with their prehistoric surroundings and still enjoy watching them whenever time and opportunity allow.
The creators of ‘The Flintstones’ holding a drawing of Fred Flintstone on August 1, 1980
The collaboration between William Hanna and Joseph Barbera began in 1940 when both were working in the animation department at MGM Studios. The two worked on Tom and Jerry cartoons with the first being Puss Gets the Boot (1940). When MGM closed its cartoon department two decades later Hanna and Barbera decided to continue the collaboration with a focus on television.
Having gained a solid reputation in theatrical shorts, Hanna and Barbera approached Columbia’s Screen Gems television studio with a storyboard for a cartoon about the adventures of dog and cat pals Ruff and Reddy. At that point Tom and Jerry cartoons were already enjoying success on television by way of recycled theatrical vehicles so the careers of Hanna and Barbera were on solid ground. The Ruff and Reddy Show followed suit in the popularity department and the two animators were well on their way to making history.
Ruff and Reddy
In 1957 Hanna-Barbera launched The Huckleberry Hound Show, the first cartoon series to receive an Emmy award. Huckleberry Hound marked a huge step in the careers of Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera in several ways. Huckleberry served as a platform for the animators to introduce many characters, several of which became stars in their own series later. In addition, Huckleberry Hound proved a huge hit with audiences, but not the demographic one would think. In 1960 a survey revealed that more adults than children were watching Huckleberry Hound on a regular basis, which prompted Hanna-Barbera to focus its efforts on a primetime animated series. Enter The Flintstones. YABBA DABBA DOO!
The Flintstones ran from 1960 to 1966 and proved such a big success with audiences of all ages that Hanna-Barbera created a space-age family to join them in prime-time. That family, of course, is The Jetsons. I enjoy The Jetsons as well, but The Flintstones are the bomb diggity with their stone-age “modern” appliances that talk and all else that make it a terrific comedy for people of all ages. The premise of the show parodied popular domestic situation comedies, a familiar, winning formula with the added bonus of skits based on the prehistoric theme. One of my favorite gags is when you see the characters step over a crack in the ground that millions of years later was to become the Grand Canyon.
You might enjoy this brief video, a history of The Flintstones:
Through the years la creme de la creme of voice actors worked on The Flintstones, including the legendary Mel Blanc and radio and television great, Bea Benaderet. Take a look at a complete list of the talents who voiced these characters here. I should note that – for me – the series lost some of its steam in its fifth season when The Great Gazoo started appearing. I’m not such a big fan of the alien in Bedrock. Gazoo was exiled to Earth because he created a doomsday machine on his planet. To me that story line is The Flintstones version of jumping the shark, but The Great Gazoo is voiced by favorite Harvey Korman who also voiced several other characters throughout the series’ run.
1960: The Flintstones voices: Fred Flintstone – Alan Reed Wilma Flintstone – Jean Vander Pyl Betty Rubble – Bea Benaderet Barney Rubble – Mel Blanc
As pop culture icons The Flintstones rank among the most recognizable in the world. They are still referenced in television shows and animated series, like The Simpsons and even became the subject of a hit song by The B-52s who recorded a version of the series’ theme song.
The characters in The Flintstones have also been used in the marketing of different products since they first aired. Among these, vitamins, cereal and beer. I can’t resist sharing the following classic commercial, which aired during the series’ first season. Here we see the characters advocating for Winston Cigarettes, the show’s sponsor on ABC. I’m not advocating smoking, by the way.
Testament to the popularity of The Flintstones is the number of Hollywood and television stars that voiced themselves and/or their characters on the show through the years. My favorite episodes are the ones that featured Hollywood stars. I post the examples I could find below, but among the popular personalities that guest-starred on the series were Ed Sullivan, Elizabeth Montgomery, Raymond Burr and Jack Dempsey. Click on each of the following movie star names to watch a clip:
Ann-Margrock
Stoney Curtis
Rock Quarry
Jimmy Darrock
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a clip of my favorite of these, Gary Granite, but here’s his picture from episode 6 of season 1, “The Monster from the Tar Pits”
Another favorite is when Fred does the “Bedrock Twitch”
My favorite cross-over was when Darren and Samantha Stevens from Bewitched appeared on The Flintstones:
Can you blame me for loving this stuff? When classic greats cross-over into classic greats it’s a mash-up made in heaven.
After The Flintstones’ initial run on ABC concluded the show became even more popular as part of Saturday morning cartoon line-ups and in syndication. That’s when I ran into them. Perhaps nothing illustrates The Flintstones popularity, however, than the number of movie adaptations – both animated and live-action – and the spin-offs it begat starting with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (1971-1972 and 1975-1976) followed by The Flintstones Comedy Hour (1972-1974) and finally The Flintstones Kids, which appeared in 1986 and ran through 1989.
Without a doubt, The Flintstones is one of the all-time great classic television shows. I put it up there with The Munsters on my list of favorites and I’m sure millions feel just as I do about it. It’s as funny a situation comedy as many consider its live-action counterparts with great scripts and voice acting the likes of which no longer exist. It’s time you revisit this legendary and enjoyable series. I need to spend more time with them myself.
Hanna-Barbera and The Flintstones This week marks the anniversary of the death of animator, producer William Hanna (July 14, 1910 – March 22, 2001).

Stripped of their weapons by a xenophobic culture, the duo will have to battle to regain them—but what happens when Space Ghost dons the Emerald Ring and Hal Jordan put on the Power Bands? And in the backup feature, Ruff and Reddy were once the toast of nightclubs, variety shows, late night chat fests and Broadway. Learn how they became the comedic duo of yesterday…before they hit rock-bottom today! I’ll say this after reading Suicide Squad The Banana Splits I wasn’t sure what to expect here. I mean let’s face it Space Ghost has had a long and storied career from cartoon to talk show host to serious comic book series so where in that spectrum was going to lie? Well the guys when the serious comic series route and honestly I think it makes for one hell of a great story. Also that it’s also just Hal Jordan and Space Ghost without their teammates or sidekicks made it all the better for me. This isn’t a silly story and while yes there are great moments where the dialogue makes you chuckle it’s because you know the characters and how they think and what comes out is genuinely funny. The story itself is pretty genius and the way it unfolds for the reader is among some of the best writing around today! From concept to execution what the guys are doing here is something that while may be a one-shot is something I’d love to see more of. It’s just that damn good. Speaking of damn good there’s Olivetti! I mean the interiors here are absolutely stunning! The attention to detail blows me away and the way the characters look physically fuels all my macho man crush yearnings. The “alien” species or Perterran’s are great and their technology is wonderfully showcased and the creativity and imagination on display makes this a sheer delight. Ariel’s use of page layouts through the angles, perspective and use of backgrounds takes us on a journey that only heightens what the writing does. Yes this kind of follows your traditional meet, fight and team-up formula but then again that’ worked for years so why change it? What we see, learn and how the pair go about dealing with that and how the use of language here that changes drastically from one culture to the next is poignantly portrayed. This literally left me wanting more and that’s everything a great story should do. This team up made sense and worked on so many levels. It also left the door open for further adventures in my opinion and here’s hoping that we’ll see those.

Meanwhile, back in none other than Wisconsin Dells--
(Mise en scene: Crazy Claws in the House on the Rock-inspired living room of his retreat and guesthouse for fellow Funtastics coming towards Wisconsin Dells, where we find no less than--)
RUFF: I'm Ruff!
REDDY: And I'm Reddy!
CRAZY CLAWS: And I'm crazy to come across you here in Wisconsin Dells--say, how exactly did you arrive in the Dells in the first place?
REDDY: In no less than a rebuilt Cushman scooter we happen to be proud of getting around in!
RUFF: And you'll never guess what adventures we've been up to ... not to mention just sharing the simple joys of life!
REDDY, trying to explain things: You'll have to excuse Ruff's rather excited nature there, Crazy Claws; after all, I found him at an animal shelter after he was rescued from a disreputable "kitten mill" operation!
CRAZY CLAWS, taking bemused fascination: So I take it that you're a pretty crazy pair built for equally-crazy adventures about on a par with what this cat has seen, and experienced! Believe you me, when I came to the Dells some years back, I have to admit that I was at quite the loss for my direction in life ... or, as the Cattanooga Cats put it, "up, down and on the ground"!
[Ruff and Reddy could be discerned chuckling at the item]
REDDY: Meanwhile, have you ever had the feeling like you were on the edge of a UFO flying through interstellar space, hanging on for dear life and realising just how extremely cold it can get, uncertain as to where you were next heading to?
CRAZY CLAWS: I may not have been flying in a UFO like you experienced there, Reddy, but I have to admit that life can get to be rather bewildering at times. Let alone beginning on Friday of a long holiday weekend, come to think of it.
RUFF: Or just on Friday afternoon, come to think of it!
REDDY: I think Ruff got you there, didn't he, Crazy Claws?
CRAZY CLAWS: I think you're better off calling me "CC" just between us here in the hangout....
[Certainly generating quite the bellylaugh.]
And welcome to the Dells, besides.

“Underwater America with Peter Potamus” (episode 6: Lake Tahoe)
[This is a contrived transcript to another episode of Underwater America with Peter Potamus, essentially a travelling SCUBA party with a group of close friends discovering the friendship and fun potential of SCUBA diving on a cross-country journey from California to Maine, with many stops in between.
[This time around, the scene opens with some tacky aerial footage of Lake Tahoe and the surrounds, circling around both the California and Nevada sides of the lake ...]
PETER POTAMUS, on a dive boat just offshore of South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. with a few of the casinos barely visible: State lines, they say, are pretty much arbitrary and not too clearly defined. Heck, they even pass underwater as much as into space ... which perhaps explains the backstory for this week’s diving adventure here on Lake Tahoe, straddling the line between California and Nevada as it does. As a matter of fact, our diving party will basically sense what it feels like crossing a state line underwater ... especially one as is up in the Sierra Nevada.
[As it turns out, we spot the surprise guests for this dive, Ruff and Reddy, coming aboard the dive charter. Peter takes a somewhat surprised double-take at the presence.]
RUFF: My name’s Ruff ...
REDDY: And mine’s Reddy ... and we thought we’d join the dive you’ve set up here on Lake Tahoe ... and just smell that High Sierra air!!
PETER POTAMUS: Which, I admit, is something of an Unexpected Surprise--no less than a cat-and-dog pair of adventurers, as in Ruff and Reddy, who somehow stumbled across this SCUBA party without knowing we were around ... and to whom yours truly is preparing some lessons in SCUBA technique in such incredibly clear (if chilly as well) waters!
[The scene shifts to near shore, where we find Ruff and Reddy getting coached on the procedure for fitting dive gear, making sure the fins are fitted last ... Peter “himself” explaining the “spit-and-rinse” mask-cleaning procedure ... and, leading the two adventurers into the water, while staying close to shore, we can sense the state of clumsiness Reddy encounters when he realises he’s not quite that accustomed to SCUBA.]
PETER POTAMUS, essentially narrating off-camera: I can’t help but admit being the sort who’s fond of introducing the unlikeliest types out there to SCUBA. Especially so such unlikely adventurers as Ruff and Reddy ... and while Reddy may have looked a little unnerved being introduced to SCUBA, I happen to be the sort to take a rather patient approach to introducing other Funtastics to the joy of SCUBA. Which is what this adventure is all about.
RUFF, somewhat excitedly: I do have to admit Lake Tahoe felt a bit on the chilly side of things, but what amazing clarity of water!
REDDY: Perhaps my initial unease could be put down to my not having gone diving serious like in some while ... but believe you me, Peter Potamus has a certain way in making us feel “at home” underwater in a way without needlessly forcing it upon you. And what an experience it was underneath Lake Tahoe ... so clear, so emerald-like the waters happen to be....
PETER POTAMUS: I am certainly a charmer there ... oh yes, the main dive to hand: Though there isn’t any clear marking on the surface of the exact state line between The Golden State and The Silver State, the dive-in was set up so that the dive boat was right on the state line ... and yours truly dived in on the state line, while, thanks to an informal drawing of straws, the rest were divided evenly between the California side and the Nevada side of the lake as much as the boat. [The inevitable underwater-ballet-entrance approach, as captured by Squiddly Diddly just inside Nevada, you might like to know, was One Big Interstate Splasharoo ... particularly considering where we found Breezly Bruin and Wally Gator appearing to be dozing off in a resting position underwater, as if they were sitting in lounge chairs back on dry land.]
WALLY GATOR, recalling the experience: Try picturing yourself on an inflatable beach matteress--only underwater, and just dozing away in blissful serenity while in a SCUBA frame of mind. In such emerald-like waters whose chilliness was enough to jolt you back to your senses if you weren’t careful, don’t you know ...
LIPPY THE LION, himself getting in his quarter’s worth: Just acclimating myself to the sheer body-bracing experience that is Lake Tahoe required quite the cold shower in my motel room the evening before ... and can you just picture the wonderfully unpredictable, sensing some remnants of logging days back in the area.... [You could sense Lippy attempting some stretching exercises not unlike touching toes in sheer weightlessness, and his mypoic partner Hardy Har-Har getting somewhat perplexed at the notion.]
PETER POTAMUS: This may be the first fresh-water diving experience of our tour, but I’m certain Squiddly Diddly managed to adopt to the change in milieu for production purposes.
SQUIDDLY DIDDLY: You can certainly say that again! At least a few hot salt-water baths will certainly ensure my figure is ... well, how shall I put it for an underwater photographer? [The whole team manages to get a chuckle out of that bon mot.]
PETER POTAMUS: Isn’t the diving experience interesting, to say the least?!
