THE GROUP'S ARTY PENCHANT FOR RETRO GLAMOUR STARTS HERE.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on a photo-session/photo-dump of ROXY MUSIC cover-girl/model Kari-Ann Muller posing for RM'S self-titled 1972 debut album sleeve art. 📸: Karl Stoecker.
SLEEVE ART OVERVIEW: "Cornwall-born Kari-Ann Muller was a former Bond girl (she appeared in "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service") paid a scant £20 to appear on the cover of "Roxy Music" – a steal for the then-unknown band, whose debut album would go on to define 70s art-rock. Evoking classic glamour shots of the '40s and '50s, the "Roxy Music" artwork set the template for all future Roxy Music album covers, though Muller would retire from modeling in order to become a yoga teacher. She retains ties to the rock world, however, as she married Chris Jagger, whose brother has fronted a popular beat combo since the '60s."

Roxy Music
I have as stand alone or as part of mp3 collection by Roxy Music -1st (1972), For Your Pleasure (1973), Stranded (1973), Country Life (1974), Siren (1975), Manifesto (1979), Flesh & Blood, (1980) Avalon (1982). I was a fan before they hit it big with Siren, though I found some of songs on the first lps a bit dull & self-indulgent in that art-school way. With pop dominated by groups like Led…

A Breath of Fresh Air Aug 6
A Breath of Fresh Air With Sandy Kaye bombshellradio.com Tuesdays 1pm EST and Fridays 8pm EST Archival shows : bombshellradiopodcasts.com Known for his part in legendary Australasian bands Split Enz and Crowded House, as well as for Finn Brothers with younger sibling and frequent bandmate Neil Finn, Tim Finn is also recognized for witty, insightful solo material that often negotiates warm jangle and smooth singer/songwriter pop. Having led chart-topping art rock/new wave outfit Split Enz since 1972, the success of his solo debut, 1983's Escapade (a number one hit in New Zealand), signaled the end of the group, whose remaining members -- including Neil -- issued their final LP in 1984. It gave Neil the opportunity to step into the role of singer and main songwriter, and he subsequently launched the even more successful Crowded House in 1985. Tim briefly joined that group as guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist for 1990's Woodface and associated touring, then resumed his solo career with popular albums including 1993's Before & After (New Zealand Top Three, U.K. Top 30), 2006's Imaginary Kingdom (New Zealand Top 20), and 2011's The View Is Worth the Climb (New Zealand Top 30). After working on the stage musical Ladies in Black, Finn returned with a pair of wide-ranging full-length collaborations with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, Caught by the Heart (2021) and The Ghost of Santiago (2022). HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Irwin Allen, Cindy Lee Berryhill, Junior Brown, Rocky Burnette, Jewell Caples, Bun E. Carlos (who I played “the history of rock’n’roll” with live), Coldplay’s 2008 VIDA LA VIDA OR DEATH album, Chick Corea, the sublime crooner Vic Damone, Brad Delp, Pete Farndon (Pretenders), Charlie Feathers, Anne Frank, Uta Hagen, Bill Haley & The Comets 1954 single “Rock Around the Clock,” Roy Harper, “Helsinki Day,” John Lennon’s 1972 SOMETIME IN NYC LP, Christie Martin, Reg Presley (Troggs), Robyn, Amadeo Roldán, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Richard Sherman, the 1909 single “Shine on Harvest Moon” by Ada Jones & Billy Murray, Eomann Walker, and one of my heroes, the late, great bassist and singer-songwriter extraordinaire John Wetton. Seeing him live with King Crimson in 1974 changed the way I play bass and improvise. He was a powerhouse on his axe, but also a great vocalist and songwriter. Nearly every band he joined was fantastic and popular in some way: Asia, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep + many sessions (Malcolm & Alwyn, Phil Manzanera) and an excellent string of solo albums. I chose one from one of the John Wetton/Geoff Downes set list: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMetnmjv90k ...HB John—thank you for your remarkable work and sounds.

youtube

Philip Bailey
Philip James Bailey (born May 8, 1951) is an American R&B, soul, gospel and funk singer, songwriter and percussionist best known as an early member, and one of the two lead singers (along with group founder Maurice White) of the band Earth, Wind & Fire. Noted for his four-octave vocal range and distinctive falsetto register, Bailey has won seven Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame as a member of Earth, Wind & Fire. Bailey was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame for his work with the band.
Bailey has released several solo albums. Chinese Wall from 1984, which received a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male, included the international hit, "Easy Lover", a duet with Phil Collins. "Easy Lover" won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Overall Performance in a Video in 1985 and was Grammy nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals.
In May 2008, Bailey was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music at Berklee's Commencement Ceremony where he was the commencement speaker.
Life and career
Early days
Bailey was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, United States. He attended East High School in Denver and graduated in 1969. He was also in a local R&B band called Friends & Love. Some of Bailey's early influences included jazz musicians such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Max Roach, the Motown sound, in particular the music of Stevie Wonder and he was also largely influenced by female singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Dionne Warwick.
Earth, Wind & Fire
In 1972, while attending college, Bailey was invited to join the band Earth, Wind & Fire by EWF-founder and bandleader Maurice White. Bailey was the featured lead vocalist on popular Earth, Wind & Fire songs as "Devotion", "Keep Your Head to the Sky", "Reasons", "Fantasy", "I'll Write A Song For You", "Imagination", "I've Had Enough", and "Guiding Lights". He also shared lead vocals with Maurice White on such EWF hits as "Shining Star", "Getaway", "September", "Sing A Song", "Serpentine Fire", "Saturday Night", and sang lead with both White and the girl group The Emotions on their classic disco collaboration "Boogie Wonderland".
With Maurice White's retirement and then death, Bailey became the on-stage leader of Earth, Wind & Fire, along with bassist Verdine White, vocalist/percussionist Ralph Johnson and vocalist/percussionist B. David Whitworth.
In live duet performances, Bailey will sing his falsetto part, then switch to the vocal part originally sung by White, showing off his vocal prowess and versatility.
Solo albums
In 1983, Bailey issued his debut studio album, titled Continuation, on Columbia Records. The album reached No. 19 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. An album cut titled "I Know" rose to No. 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
During 1984, Bailey released his second solo album, titled Chinese Wall, also on Columbia Records. The album reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 10 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA. Off the album, a duet with Collins titled "Easy Lover", rose to Nos. 1 & 2 on the UK Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts, respectively.
Bailey went on to issue his third studio album, titled Inside Out, in 1986 on Columbia. The album reached No. 30 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. A single from the album titled "State Of The Heart" reached No. 20 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
During 1994, Bailey issued his self titled fourth studio album on Zoo Entertainment. Artists including Brian McKnight, Chuckii Booker and PM Dawn guested on the LP. The album cut "Here With Me" rose to No. 33 on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart.
Bailey went on to release his first jazz album, titled Dreams in 1999 on Heads Up International records. The album featured artistes such as Gerald Albright, Grover Washington, Jr. and Pat Metheny. It reached No. 43 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. During 2002 he released Soul on Jazz, his sophomore jazz album once again on Heads Up. The album rose to No. 45 upon the Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
Gospel
Bailey featured on Andraé Crouch's 1979 album I'll Be Thinking of You. He and Maurice White then collaborated with The Hawkins Family on their 1981 live album, The Hawkins Family Live.
In 1980, Bailey joined with friends, Deniece Williams, Billy Davis and Marilyn McCoo to present a gospel show at a popular Los Angeles club named The Roxy. The show was called "Jesus At the Roxy". Williams later reported that "God did something miraculous. Over three hundred people were saved." After that, both Bailey and Williams decided to pursue careers in Christian music.
During 1984, Bailey issued his first gospel album titled The Wonders of His Love on Myrrh Records. The album reached No. 13 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and No. 17 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. The Wonders of His Love was also Grammy nominated in the category of Best Inspirational Performance.
His second gospel album Triumph was released in 1986 on Horizon Records. The LP reached No. 18 on the Top Christian Albums chart and No. 33 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. Triumph also won a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance, Male.
During 1989 he released his third gospel album titled Family Affair on Myrrh Records. The album reached No. 37 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart.
Bailey later played percussion and sang on the King Baptist Church Mass Choir's 1990 album Holding on to Jesus' Hand.
Work with other artists
Bailey sang on Jazz guitarist Alphonso Johnson 1976's LP Yesterday's Dreams. He later played percussion alongside Verdine White on bass upon the track "Tahiti Hut" composed by both Maurice White and Eumir Deodato from Deodato's 1978 album Love Island. He also sang on Ronnie Laws' 1978 album Flame.
Bailey went on to produce R&B Band Kinsman Dazz's 1978 debut LP Kinsman Dazz and work as an arranger and guest artist on their sophomore 1979 album Dazz. As a band, Kinsman Dazz later became known as the Dazz Band. Bailey also collaborated as a vocalist with tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine on his 1981 album Tender Togetherness.

Listed: Dallas Acid
Dallas Acid is a trio from Austin, Texas that first convened in 2015 to play music inspired by the synthesizer-oriented ensembles of the 1970s. Laaraji is a zither player who had been busking for years in New York’s Washington Square Park before Brian Eno heard him and asked him to come on down to the studio. Their LP, Day of Radiance, marks the intersection of the new age and ambient music genres. Laaraji and his musical partner Arji OceAnanda shared a gig with Dallas Acid in early 2018, after which they went into the studio. This encounter yielded a collaborative LP, Arrive Without Leaving. The members of Dallas Acid compiled this list.
We are sure that most people reading this will probably know about these records already, but these are ten of our favorite, all-time classics that have had the greatest influence on our music. There are literally hundreds of others we should include, but these should be easy to find for those who are unfamiliar and curious. In no particular order:
Steve Hillage—Rainbow Dome Musick
youtube
Canterbury’s epic prog guitar master collaborated with long-time partner Miquette Giraudy in 1979 on Arps, EMS & some modular Moogs, taking our favorite moments from their work with Gong and solo albums to create this early ambient masterpiece. Rediscovered as come-down music in the height of KLF-fueled rave culture in the late 80s, Rainbow Dome Musick offers a different approach to the ambient genre than the work of Eno and the Krautrock pioneers. The two sides of this LP are very effective in creating a reality with no beginning and no end.
Popul Vuh—Hosiana Mantra/Aguirre
youtube
It was so hard to pick just one Popul Vuh record, so we picked two! Both recorded in 1972 and yet worlds apart, the soundtrack for Werner Herzog’s Aguirreis dominated by its beautiful minimalist Moog compositions. OnHosiana Mantra, Florian Fricke goes acoustic with a full band and vocalist Djong Yun, producing reverent, meditative, therapeutic, and maybe slightly unsettling compositions that will definitely make you a better person after just one listening.
Klaus Schulze—Moondawn
youtube
This 1976 LP was our introduction to Klaus Schulze’s work with sequencers. Cyborgand Irrlictwere both big influences on us texturally and structurally, but hearing the way he seemed to use the sequencer to drive composition changed the way we approached songwriting. This is the first in a series of great albums for Klaus over the next couple of years, but it also feels like the first LP to feature his classic analogue space station with all components operating in optimal harmony. Plus, you get to hear Harald Grosskopf (who’s own solo 1980 LP Synthesistis fantastic) play some pretty crazy percussion on the record.
Fripp & Eno—(No Pussyfooting)
Shortly after leaving Roxy Music, Brian Eno had been experimenting with an extended tape-delay system (first developed by Pauline Oliveros and Terry Riley) and teamed up with virtuoso guitarist Robert Fripp to create one of the most unique and revered recordings of Ambient/Experimental/Electronic music. 1973’s (No Pussyfooting)is not quite yet ambient music as we would come to know it but offers some incredible exploration into what was then an undefined genre. Fripp’s technique and concoction of effects would be known as Frippertronics, and while many over the 45 years since have attempted to imitate, none has matched the exceptional playing on this LP.
Ashra—New Age of Earth
youtube
Manuel Göttsching’s reputation as an innovative guitarist with Ash Ra Tempel had been well established by the time he released this 1976 adventure into synth-guitar experimentation. ARPs, Farfisa and an EMS are given equal importance as the echo-driven guitar hypnosis technique that came to define his style. Still too dirty to be true “New Age” this LP captures Göttsching at his most innovative and tasteful, with the perfect balance of darkness and light.
Spiritualized—Lazer Guided Melodies
youtube
I was very luckily to see Spiritualized with this classic line-up in Los Angeles on the Rollercoaster US tour back in 1992. Those first few records with Kate on keys and Will on bass are still our favorites. So magical - the perfect combination of minimalist restraint and calculated explosions of ecstasy. This EP collection has an incredible transportive quality that just hasn’t been outdone since.
Nico—Desertshore
youtube
This 1970 album is definitely a dive into the darkness but might be the most beautiful of all the records we’ve listed. While John Cale’s influence & contributions are clear, it might be the furthest Nico strayed from the Velvet Underground days. You are immediately overpowered by the droning harmonium and rendered almost immobile by her stark words and monotone vocals. If you survive a single listening without an intense emotional reaction, you truly contain the stuff from which all future anti-depressants should be made.
Gavin Bryars—The Sinking of the Titanic
youtube
Ex-Scratch Orchestra member Gavin Bryars used bit of dark humor as the inspiration for this slow-moving composition for strings. As the Titanic sank, legend has it, the ship’s band continued to play on. First released in 1975 on Eno’s Obscure Records, the recording is increasingly affected over time to simulate the changes in sound reverberation as they sank further into the ocean.
Terry Riley—Shri Camel
youtube
Using a YC-45D modified for just intonation and an early digital delay, Terry Riley adds an Indian tonality to his signature minimalist style. Composed in 1975 but not released until 1980 Shri Camel feels more open and tranquil than many of his previous recordings. Transformative.
LARAAJI—Essence/Universe
Essence/Universe by Laraaji
Obviously we hold the entire LARAAJI catalogue in great esteem, but this 1987 release, re-issued a few years ago on Brian Eno’s All Saints label, is probably our favorite. The ambient master’s zither is more affected than on his other recordings, creating incredible, almost super-natural, reverberated washes of shimmering ecstasy. The two side-long tracks achieve a vibration which is uniquely meditative, even for a musician who’s entire life’s work has been defined by its thoughtfully measured cosmic flow.

7 May 2022: Tuscaloosa, Neil Young + Stray Gators. (2019 Reprise release of 1973 recordings)
This copy of Tuscaloosa, My eight billionth Neil Young purchase, “#04″ in his “Archives Performance Series” (that’s fourth based on recording chronology, not release chronology) is actually my third copy of the album. I seem to gravitate toward CD first with Neil Young, and then pick up vinyl copies of things I really like (or that are available for cheap). In 2019 I bought this album on standalone CD, and then earlier this year I started listening to his 2021 box Archives Vol. II (1972-1976), which also includes a copy of Tuscaloosa. One of the many maddening things about collecting Neil Young is he’ll release an archival album, you’ll go buy it, and then a year later he comes out with an Archives box that contains half a dozen things you’ve already bought, but half a dozen other things exclusive to the box, so you end up double-dipping. My brother came up with a good scheme for this: buy Young’s archival standalones on vinyl, and that way when the next Archives set comes out, which are always CD-only, you at least aren’t buying the same format twice.
One of the many refrains among Neil Young collectors is that he seems to have released so many albums containing live material from the early ’70s. It is true that he does, but sometimes one of them will really stand out. For instance, the last three discs of Archives Vol. II that I’ve played are this (1973), a freaky and spooky alternative version of his album Tonight’s the Night (1973), and then one called Roxy: Tonight’s the Night Live (1973). That’s three albums of material from the same year, with a fair amount of overlap. You’d expect a person would get tired of it all, but I don’t. When I can buy a 32-disc set of a single Bob Dylan tour featuring the same songs on every disc, I can certainly handle a small stack of 1973 Neil Young material. However, favorites do rise to the top. The Roxy set, for instance, I think I also own three copies of, but it’s not one I particularly groove to. That alternate Tonight’s the Night I groove to immensely; if that existed on vinyl, I’d be buying it in a second. Tuscaloosa is sort of alternate version of his album Time Fades Away that actually came out in 1973; I haven’t heard Time Fades Away in a while so I can’t tell you off the cuff exactly how they stack up against each other, but even though it hadn’t been that long since I spent time with my standalone CD of Tuscaloosa, during its Archives II stint I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to keep going with it. It never hurts to find a copy of a Neil Young vinyl release for under $20; that’s an instant purchase.
The Stray Gators was one of Young’s many fluctuating bands, and its members will be familiar to anyone who has perused Neil Young credit sheets: Ben Keith, Jack Nitzsche, Tim Drummond, and Johnny Barbata. Everyone but Barbata continued to work with Young periodically well beyond 1973; he had already served as drummer for the Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young group.
Above we have the front and back covers of Tuscaloosa.
Below is the opened gatefold.
Next we see both sides of the first inner sleeve (this is a 2-LP set).
The second inner sleeve also has a nearly blank back, so I’m showing only the front side.
Here is side one’s label. They’re all the same.
There’s only music on the first three sides, and on side four they’ve done an etching, which every record company seems to love to do. It’s hard to capture photos of these, but it’s got the band name and album title in a font that looks like nothing Neil Young would ever use, and then a drawing of a gator. Anyone who knows anything about Neil Young album design would know they should have used his handwriting, and a picture of an alligator is just typical record-company foolishness and looks like it came from someone who knows nothing about the artist.

'Baron Von Tollbooth'/'Manhole': Dying Embers of the First American Psychedelic Period (1966-73) Part One
For some reason, I dug these two slices of late-period psychedelic vinyl from my shelves, and reimagined my first listening to them in 1973, at a time when this sort of music was being gradually put out to pasture, to be replaced by more slick and knowing, post - hippie types like David Bowie, Roxie Music, Steely Dan and Little Feat, to name only a few 1970s masters. To give it it's full title, Baron Von Tolbooth and the Chrome Nun (BVT) was jointly credited to Jefferson Airplane's 'royal couple', Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, with Quicksilver Messenger Service's David Freiberg as the studio gooseberry; Manhole, also on the Airplane's Grunt vanity label (which was distributed by RCA Victor), was a solo project, but with a cast of thousands, by Slick, the first of four. I've always remained a great fan of both of these LPs, but they do serve to demonstrate some of the reasons why first generation psychedelic music, in particular that from San Francisco, was looking rather peaky by 1973, a year that, like 1963, can be put forward as the decade's 'true start'. After all, wasn't this essentially Sixties music, even if some of us only really caught up with it in the early seventies?
The Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow (February 1967) was the first really significant psychedelic San Francisco recording. Never mind The Charlatans, Moby Grape, The Great! Society or even Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. We very soon had After Bathing at Baxters and Crown of Creation, Electric Music for the Mind and Body, Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Happy Trails, and Cheap Thrills - these are merely the late 60s products of probably the best known of the SF groups of the time. There are many, many others, some of which can be experienced on a 4-disc Rhino 'nuggets' compilation from 2007, Love Is the Song We Sing: San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970, a sumptuously presented selection, which features the great and the good, the bad and the plain indifferent, as any honest and accurate collection should.
Most rock historians have pointed out that 1970 is probably a good cut-off point; the essential conservatism of America (or Amerika, as some hippies insisted on calling it) began to emerge around 1968 (despite the revolutionary rhetoric of the time) in even the supposed 'radical' genre of the rock music at that time, with the emergence of what we now call 'Americana': Dylan kicked it off with John Wesley Harding and, even earlier, The Basement Tapes (the latter initially only available as a bootleg, Little White Wonder); The Beatles aimed to "get back to where you once belonged"; The Stones courted and were courted by Byrd/Burrito Brother, good 'ol/young boy, Gram Parsons; the covers of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's monster-seller Deja Vu and The Band's eponymous second disc were virtually interchangeable, being sepia-tinted exercises of nostalgia for a future-imagined bucolic rural arcadia (in places like Marin County, however, rather than the post-lapsarian, smack and speed-riddled, Haigh Ashbury of 1968).
As I have described in my books, I'm a fan of the 'seven year cycle' model of musical 'movements'. Taking on this admittedly rather fanciful framework, we can see that the post-1970 years represented a 'decadent' phase of the notional first psychedelic era of 1966-73. English psychedelic whimsy was soon bulldozed by nascent 'progressive' music, both in the form of what became known as Prog, and that of hard rock/metal. (Blue Cheer were thus perhaps the most prescient of all the SF groups.) There were several great albums by the SF musicians around 1972-4, including the first Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir solo excursions, Garcia and Ace, From the Mars Hotel (beloved by Tony Blair's Ugly Rumours band, and probably the Dead's last wholly satisfactory studio recording, from 1974), the early Hot Tuna output culminating in The Phosphorescent Rat, but the writing was very clearly on the wall, despite the efforts over here of bands like Gong and the Welsh jammers Man. (Man were even joined, for a time, by none other than QMS's immortal John Cipollina, thus squaring some sort of circle, I guess?)
More to come...

Roxy Music – For Your Pleasure (Half Speed Master) (LP) (01.04.2022)
Arriving seemingly perfectly formed from nowhere, Roxy Music’s self-titled debut instantly propelled the band into the affections of both the music-buying public and the serious music press – no mean feat in 1972. Frontman Bryan Ferry’s lyrical evocations of romance and glamour, pop-art references and allusions to both old Hollywood and future shock sci-fi came showcased against an eclectic and…
