A ROMAN IRON SPATHA CIRCA 100-300 A.D.
The Roman spatha was a long, straight sword used by the Roman Empire from the 1st to 6th centuries AD: Length: 20–40 in (0.5–1 m). Handle length: 7–8 in (18–20 cm). Use: In war and gladiatorial fights.
The spatha was a heavy infantry weapon that replaced the gladius, which became a light infantry weapon. The spatha was adopted from Germanic tribes, such as the Celts and Gauls, and was likely a hybrid of Celtic and Roman design. The spatha was often depicted in ancient art, and was used by higher-ranking soldiers.
The spatha was effective against lighter armored enemies, and its longer reach gave infantry more room to thrust. Cavalry soldiers also used the spatha because they could reach down from horseback.
The spatha design remained in use for centuries, even after the end of the Roman Empire. Swords from the 7th to 10th centuries, like Viking swords, are recognizable derivatives of the spatha.

Ser Jaime?" Even in soiled pink satin and torn lace, Brienne looked more like a man in a gown than a proper woman."I am grateful, but ... you were well away. Why come back?"
A dozen quips came to mind, each crueler than the one before, but Jaime only shrugged. "I dreamed of you," he said.

AKHENATEN
uhhh let's see. I combined some sketches I did of Nefertiti and Akhenaten and ended up somewhere here for an Akhenaten design. in my heart, it's for a comic but there's so much visual research I'd have to do before I could even think about approaching a comic. oof.
anyway moving on: Akhenaten was a childhood obsession! and then I moved onto other things, as one does, but then a couple months ago I decided to check out some books and now I have a headache.

really really enjoy how The Bright Sword depicts post-Arthurian britain as this once colonized, twice abandoned place. like it was conquered and then abandoned by the romans, who remade the aristocracy and language in their image and christianized the country and left behind works of engineering that would not be replicated for a thousand-plus years. then it was this land of christian miracles held together by Arthur and God, and then God abandoned the country and those kinds of miracles were never seen again
and the book explicitly plays with the connections between the Roman Empire and Christian/monarchist power, mentioning that some crackpots believe in the eventual return of the Roman Empire the way that people believe Arthur will return some day, and having the protagonist marvel at roman mining machinery that seems impossible to believe could have ever worked the way he marvels at stories of the Quest for the Grail
not 100% sure where this is going but it’s very effective for being a story about how the age of heroes is dead, because the age of wonders and power is sort of twice dead.

I think, in general, the Italian peplum films deserve more discussion when it comes to adaptations of Ancient Mediterranean material, since they tend to cover periods of time that aren't usually covered by adaptations that originate in the Anglosphere (and overall, the mood is similar, but subtly different, from what you get in a lot of Anglo depictions of Rome and Greece).
They are also often fun rides that are *also* often dubbed into English...often poorly, which makes them even better.
