OK but RJ Palmer in particular is a pretty solid take on stuff threatening to kill the art world.

Makes me think of a post a bit back that was saying everytime you use ai for anything, you're legitimizing its existence and making the problem worse.

I think that's what Palmer's going for here, not that references are plagiarism, just that using AI for your references is a dangerous support of AI.

...Like, to speak a bit more calmly, I will say I think this vid kinda shows why I'm pissed at Palmer on this issue:

Now, IDK Shaun's own views on AI art, and I do have my own issues with The Cuphead Article but like, note what the right-wing outrage-mongerers he talks about are doing.

That is what RJ Palmer is doing in this debate.

Like, probably not all of the horror stories about AI are like this, for example I think that AI "flooding" of search results is a legit major logistical problem almost no platforms are grappling with, but I feel like a good deal of the stories that induce this panic can be traced back to this sort of process.

And Palmer's one of the big vectors of that, hence my loathing...

Legit hot take, but I fucking have an unending loathing for RJ Palmer, because of how he's spearheaded this gargantuan fucking moral panic over AI art that takes the issue of copyright law, which I was already despairing over basically never getting better, and threatens to make it significantly worse.

Like, in all instances I have seen, anything they could do with regards to copyright and AI (as opposed to doing shit with labor rights and privacy rights that would actually fucking help) is just going to have negative conseqences. Pretty much everyone who knows their shit wrt the horrors of modern copyright has said this.

Not even just for people who use the tech, but it will likely have so many knock-on effects on things that aren't AI via allowing the megacorps to hold draconian powers to fuck people over with even more shit related to copyright than they do now, and the fact that he pushed the "COPYRIGHT GOOD, UNGA BUNGA" perspective to the point where it seems to be the majority opinion makes me want to break glass.

Like, this motherfucker is looking to be for the issue of AI what Metallica was for "piracy," and anyone who follows him is a fucking sucker.
