Distortion, distortion, distortion.
Went into this patch without any clear direction - most importantly, I knew I wanted to pan around some drums a bit, since I picked up Jumble Henge which I've wanted to get a bit more space on the kit forever.
Marbles acts as the master clock, with T2 clocking Zularic Repetitor and Data Bender. ZR on pattern 01000 controls Daiko for metallic percussion through IDUM, and ABD Kicks without trigger modulation. Taiko is triggered directly from T3, acting mostly as a snare.
T1 clocks Bloom (acting as a clock multiplier and sequencer) and triggers Sinc Bucina, which is where we get to the lead? Distorted bass? I really have no clue what to call it - it's a sound I cam across just patching and re-patching. Telharmonic receives Tonic CV from Bloom and Degree CV from X1. Phase output plays through Sinc Bucina, getting heavily filtered, then Strega. Strega applied heavy distorting saturation, very light reverb, and hi-pass filtering. The voice finally goes into Data Bender with additional saturation, in micro mode, with low repeats. All of these processing stages together create that noisy sound, as well as the novel rhythm. There's just something about it.
Some additional pings come from Ts-L, bitcrushed by o_C and through Ikarie and panned around with an LFO.
Ultimately a very cool patch, and one that's pretty much impossible to recreate. Very happy to have Marbles back in the rack right now, it is an inspiration machine.

Kazimir Malevich and Suprematism
Tumblr media
Kazimir Malevich was an artist born in 1879. His birth time is unknown, but he was a Shatabhisha Sun with a Mars AK in Purva Ashadha. Shatabhisha is a Rahu ruled nakshatra located in Sidereal Aquarius. Purva Ashadha is a Venus ruled nakshatra located in Sidereal Sagittarius.
Malevich is known as one of the fathers of abstract art. To give a fairly brief explanation, Malevich believed that in a society that was rapidly industrializing with the invention of cars, radio, and machine guns, art ought to reflect this culture of movement and speed. Therefore, the classical traditions of aesthetic human form and naturalism were crude to him and not “real art.” Malevich established two major shapes of the circle and the square, organizing them to express their motion and weight. This created the movement of Suprematism which valued artistic feeling over reason. Essentially, he wanted to focus on form and the painterly aspects, unburdened from the weight of meaning and high culture. Unfortunately, Malevich’s avant-garde, pre-film views were not favored in the Soviet Union, most of his work was put into storage, and he died at the age of 57. Either way, he stands as an iconoclast and an innovator in the field of art.
This reflects the nature of Apas, Purva Ashadha’s lord, who is the goddess of water, the purifying and cleansing element. Malevich writes,
“In repeating or tracing the forms of nature, we have nurtured our consciousness with a false conception of art. The work of the primitives was taken for creation… The classics also… Between the art of creating and the art of repeating there is a great difference. To create means to live forever creating newer and newer things. And however much we arrange furniture about rooms, we will not extend or create a new form for them. And however many moonlit landscapes the artist paints, however many grazing cows and pretty sunsets, they will remain the same dear little cows and sunsets. Only in a much worse form. ”
This excerpt highlights a desire to make art pure and remove what was false, through innovation, rather than burdened reproduction. I also find the distinction between the primitives, which is very, very common in his manifesto, as Purva Ashadha-esque considering another symbol of the Purva Ashadha is the winnowing basket which separates wheat from the chaff. Malevich wants to separate the weak repetitors from the strong creators.
Lastly, Malevich often refers to the idea of transforming himself in the “zero of form”. The 0, or empty circle which is Shatabhisha’s symbol, represents the full range of possibilities. 0 is the precipice between the negative past and the positive future. The circle is encircled (ha.) by its boundaries, made in the past, that cut it off; the empty circle is ... empty, waiting to be the vessel that can carry endless objects in the future. Shatabhisha is known to break down and incite social change as it has the range to observe and then critique. Malevich, as a Shatabhisha Sun, had the ability to critique the world of painting and in the confines of painting, established an art movement that reflected the sheer weight, speed, and movement of a society in the midst of industrialization. More thoughts about Kyouka and Akutagawa since I have. A Lot. Most of this was initially rambles that were to go in the tags but got too long to fit
In the end Akutagawa likes Kyouka so much and is fond of her because he subconsciously admires how she found the courage to get out of the environment that was severely hurting her and actually call out her abusive mentor for the pain he inflicted her, whereas Akutagawa is aware that he never was and never will be able to do the same. It's only subconscious, because Akutagawa couldn't ever stand admitting it to himself- because to him that would mean admitting being in pain is his fault too, as well as second guessing every single choice he's ever made. But the admiration is still there. Akutagawa is always complimenting Kyouka, and it's kind of heartwarming‚ kind of heartbreaking when you take in that that's just what he always wanted his own mentor to do to him. Akutagawa's character is so tragic...
Also, in my opinion Kyouka never really feared Akutagawa the way Akutagawa fears Dazai. She feared being hurt as long as she stayed in an hostile enviroment, in great disadvantage and with no chance to get out on her own, but as soon as her chains were broken she really... Doesn't falter in front of Akutagawa. She threatens him with a gun the day after having left the pm- and she doesn't falter, doesn't hesitate; she almost blows him up seconds later; she's not afraid of him as they fight during the cannibalism arc; in Dead Apple, she isn't troubled by the idea of being left alone with him, because she's confident in her abilities and knows she can perfectly stand up for herself. None of this could be said for Akutagawa and Dazai. Partially because Akutagawa was much more vulnerable than Kyouka when Dazai picked him up (despite them being the same age; but Kyouka was raised lovingly and had a perception of what being treated with dignity was like, while Akutagawa lacked that), partially because Dazai is way better at manipulating people than Akutagawa could ever be, who really sucks at it. Akutagawa is terrified of Dazai and still very much subject to him: God, he didn't hesitate one second to throw himself from a balcony just to catch a repetitor for a slight chance to talk to him. He begged him to allow him to prove his power although he was beaten and exhausted and every muscle in his body hurt like hell. He didn't object to being teamed up with the person he hates the most in the whole world just because it was Dazai who asked. After four years after having been abandoned, Dazai called, and Akutagawa immediately ran to him- with that desperate look in his eyes. But the list is so long, I could go on forever; every single thing Akutagawa does (or, almost every single... ), he does for Dazai. Kyouka would never do ANY of this for Akutagawa (thank goodness). Akutagawa fears Dazai, Kyouka doesn't fear Akutagawa.
It's also sorta fun how Kyouka didn't particularly try to hide her dislike for Akutagawa even while she was still in the pm. Seriously, Kyouka is so fearless and brave. I wholly believe her being so blunt about her animosity towards him contributes to Akutagawa having a liking for her, be it self-loathing, be it having the courage to do what he himself could never. (And it's also fun to remember how Akutagawa has it in him to hate Dazai. There's a whole alternative universe where he deeply loathes him from the first to the last page).
Really, Kyouka and Akutagawa are some of my favorite foils and I'll never get tired of them. Both of them are kind of ruthless. Both have a deep bond with their siblings, who bring out the best of them. For both joining their respective organizations is seen as salvation. The way they're both very pragmatic and oftentimes even cynical. The way they were perfectly on the same page in Dead Apple, to the point Kyouka deemed it the best choice in that moment to go with Akutagawa rather than stay with Atushi. The real difference lays in how Kyouka found it in herself to rebel where Akutagawa couldn't. But that's not really a difference by itself as much as it was consequence of the environment they grew up in: Kyouka was raised in early childhood with love and support, and was able to tell that what was being done to her in the pm was wrong. Akutagawa, on the other hand, never knew what love is, so he couldn't perceive the lack of thereof.

A sketch of two parts.
I had my first shipment of modules in about 2 months - Maths, Erbe-Verb, and Milky Way 1u now reside in the rack. There will be more in-depth details on those as they're relevant. This current patch came about just trying things with new modules and fleshing out existing ideas I'd been exploring.
Rhythm-wise, the kick is finally on a jitter from Marbles to breathe more life into the patch. The Y LFO controls Cold Mac, acting as a macro controller for a number of drum parameters as well as rhythm selection on Zularic Repetitor. This means that over time, just about all of the percussion will change to familiar but novel arrangements. I want to explore this more, with different random sources and some longer loops to let it meander, but give it more structure.
The bowed voice takes Banshee Reach through Sinc Bucina gated as an AD envelope, then Ikarie as a "twin-peak" formant filter, then Erbe-Verb and finally Data Bender. This was just the second patch with it, but I'm already so fascinated by the workflow and sound design opportunities. I'll be keeping this voice patched up to try out an expressive sequencing method I've had brewing for a while - this should be coming in the next day or two!
As expected, options for patching increase exponentially as you add more modules. So many patches to try out, so little time. I've really valued having the opportunity to leave things patched up across multiple sessions with this new case - but it does admittedly slow down the discovery that comes with a new patch. I'll keep going, and strike a balance eventually.

I am totally pushing the aku top of the school agenda HOWEVER this mf would pop a vein before tutoring anyone (teaching math would end up in murder)
I swear I am extremely fascinated by and genuinely interested to understand what prompts this fairly spread perception of smart Akutagawa because I really can't see it.
Akutagawa is THE flawed character of the franchise. He has barely any redeemeing qualities. His being a ruthless, mindless dog, a beast, an animal is a central theme of his character: he's one of the most inhuman characters, no rationality, no emotions. It only makes sense he'd also be lacking in intellect, one of the most intrinsically human qualities, right? Let's also keep in mind that when it comes to intelligence, he was specifically trained since a very early age so that he wouldn't develop any critical thinking skill or wisdom. He was appositely built to be an executor, never a thinker. A killing machine, a mindless beast. He was made to be a tool, not a person. He is the very epitome of irrationality- and that much shows in everything he does! There's plenty canon evidence to support it. His actions are never guided by preliminary thoughts, he just acts on instinct, akin to an animal. He will kill his target in chapter 4 although his mission is specifically not to, he will barge into a building full of security guards right through the front door without even ordering his subordinates to offer support, he will go rogue and storm into the Moby Dick destroying everything in his path no matter the consequences, he will naïvely jump off a balcony to catch a repetitor just because his worst enemy said it had Dazai-san on the line- do I have to continue? His whole character is exclusively driven either by orders, or by instinct and irrationality. Guys, it would have been SO MUCH EASIER if upon seeing Ranpo's message Akutagawa had just took out his phone and gone “hey Chuuya-san, it's likely we've found the mastermind and the whole thing will be solved here at this place, can you come over one second?”. But he didn't, and it's not simply a matter of suspension of disbelief (in the way that the events are more satisfying this way). Was it for his pride then? Indeed, but Akutagawa's pride and irrationality are in a perpetual concomitant relationship of cause and effect, where one is constantly born from the other. I do think his very simple and straight-forward objectives (1. kill the Jinko 2. be acknowledge by Dazai-san 3. die) are themselves expression of his simple mindset, and so is a certain naïvety he has, that I honestly wish more people took into account when characterizing him.
It's funny because, the thematic relevance of it is the whole point- in reality, I don't think there's such a thing as a stupid person, I firmly believe everyone has their own kind of intelligence, a field each of us excells in. But it's exactly because Akutagawa isn't a person (well. in this context at least), but a character, that one can push a characteristic to its extremes in order to make it symbolic of something, in order to make an archetype out of his character. And Akutagawa at his core is irrationality, he is Dazai's failed trainee and ugliest foil, he is the ultimate pawn, he is the beast. The fact that Akutagawa is a character– it's relevant. He's not a person, he's a vassel for themes. I can dare to rudely talk about him like he was an animal because it's the narrative itself that before anyone else pushes the reader to see him in a dehumanizing way. Akutagawa once literally tore the skin off a man's neck with his teeth effectively killing them. It's quite not simple dog coding anymore lol. But he's just a dude from a book really, he's just symbolism: and that's why he can become a dog, or a pawn, or the stupidest person of Yokohama, as the author or reader pleases. It's really not that deep ahah
I can guess a possible counterpoint would be that perhaps, in a universe where he wasn't subject to the slums and Dazai's abuse such as high schools aus, Akutagawa would get his chance to be witty? But then I can't help but think, if you don't make Akutagawa stupid... Aren't you taking a fundamental trait of his character away from him? What's left of Akutagawa then? What would be the point of reading, let's say, a sskk high school fic if you can't recognize Akutagawa in it? But then again I guess this is exactly the reason why I can't bring myself to like most of alternative universe bsd fics (╥﹏╥)
Also, ultimately, there *are* personal preference components to it. In my headcanon Akutagawa has autism / adhd, and although those don't always have a negative impact on one's academic results, there is a chance they do. And I'd honestly lean towards that chance more when it comes with Akutagawa, because he is the pathetic man that has everything going wrong for him. There's symptoms in his impulsivity and scarce self-control, and I believe they'd make school life very hard for him, especially when it comes to focusing in classes and for studying- which is fitting tbh, can you imagine Akutagawa ever having a happy life? (I'm jk I swear I love him)
Besides, I must have mentioned how one of the main appeals of sskk for me is how despite being thoroughly flawed people they can still be loved. It's surprisingly comforting to think that even the most evil of people can be loved, and it's the same when it comes for stupidity. Stretching Akutagawa's flaws just makes him more symphatetic and enjoyable to read about.
