The Modern State of Game Development: A Call for Reflection
Game development has changed dramatically over the years, and not all of it for the better. As someone who’s spent time making, modding, and playing games, I can’t help but look at the industry today and see a troubling shift—one driven by reliance on shortcuts like AI upscaling, inflated development pipelines, and a lack of focus on optimization. These trends aren’t just disappointing; they…

Valya Vednesday #11
Here’s the longest Valya text to date, by far! I first came up with the idea for this text in November, made a long list of all the words I would need to make for it, and 31 of the words on that list were my Lexember words! So this text has all of the Lexember words, plus a bunch of others I came up with during December, either derived from Lexember words or as part of their etymologies.
The text is two pages of a fictional child’s journal as they travel with their father from their small home village to one of the larger cities on the island Dzu. On their journey they see a number of things for the first time, like magical bells that protect the road with their song and (from far off) a city enveloped in a shared dream that glows with strange colors in the night.
I decided to write the text out on paper, as the child might have written it—mistakes and all! I would say about two thirds of the writing mistakes are there intentionally, and a third were my own mistakes!

Page 1:
Ra dyikli tu kinksi! Ra kli di bubwa tu nksinwi.
I’m not at home! I’m with dad at an inn.
Laga ri bingapkhi nyi hwi tu mazi kitni. A, bubwa hwi tu mazi kitni. Tlizvi pmura püki ra.
We walked all day to get here. Well, dad walked all day. I rode on the horse sometimes.
Bubwa dululya ra, bisashümwi da kihwi nyi zu spüki tabla zu. Bigaru ra sashümwi!
Dad told me to bring my book to write about our trip. I’m practicing my writing!
Nyi hwi tu tüli ndu dru, tali gzulu ki mbaru ra. Nguvamblu ka bubwa, za vi ra dyingapkhi hasra.
We’re going to a really big city, but I forgot its name. Dad’s asleep now so I can’t ask him.
Ltsisha finya bivihru bi vanyi nyi hwi.
We’re going so he can sell some nice pots.
Litlipli hmi tümpi mbrihwi, ba mu hlira ra.
There were these bells on the side of the road, which I liked.
Mu rwa ngahwu tulu langi sta mungu tu krintsi hwu tlizvi, mbrihwi bitala vingwi kikata gamu ba swa ba sa.
They made the same song that the people sing in the village sometimes, to protect the road from getting damaged by snow and rain and stuff.
Tsivi kimbri hwi tümpi ngisi. Ka ra nara, kngisi nyi lu zahnu ngingisi. Ngingingisi! Lki fu lu ngisi pazi! Ki lu düri dru.
For a while the road went alongside a river. I know now, our river is just a stream—a tiny stream! This one is a real river! It was really wide.
Nwa hmi kibgha, ba nwa nyi ngapkhi kinksinwi!
Then there was a bridge, and then we got to the inn!
Ldri tlipli hmi ri sabghu, tu mpi kiklatanu. Bubwa lya nguva mu kinksinwi kli balu puku!
There’s bells here too, on the wall of the inn. Dad said that’s why the inn is so clean!
Ka ra mblu. Zvinwa!
I’m going to bed now. Bye!

Ka nyi kli tu nksinwi sabghu!
We’re at another inn now!
Ha ka tu kitüli nyi dyikli, tali kishiri hlu nyi hlu rdna. Liklatanu skapkhu puku hmi ri!
We’re not at the city yet, but it seems like it. There’s so many buildings here!
Tali kitüli lu tümpi. Bubwa lya ki lu gvübüvu dalilyi tu mpsuru ra ngapkhi suga ki.
But the city is close. Dad says it’s the weird smudge I can see on the horizon.
Tu sivi ndu kitni nyi hwi tümpi lingwandi ba livünggi. Kishiri hlu, mu sambaru mazvi!
For a long time today we walked by farms and fields. It seemed like they would never end!
Ra ga lingu tüngwandi di lipru tugaru mu.
I saw some people farming, with animals helping them.
Ra dyinara da münüri fu. Nüngümi ra surwa mpsisha sta bwami.
I don’t know about that stuff. When I grow up I’m going to make pots like mom and dad.
Mupru tuga ri kikaku hlu mu suhwu! Ba sabghu kihradi ki lu stasta lasti.
When I saw the animals it sounded like they were singing! It felt like a dream, too, a little bit.
Bubwa lya kitninwa tu kitüli tüuhmi, kihradi hlu nana sta lasti.
Dad said it might feel like a dream to be in the city tomorrow.
Tsivünga ra ga zaku. Ka pmütu ngapkhi, tali dzila ra ngapkhi suga kitüli.
I looked out again. It’s dark now but I can still see the city.
Kishiri ki lu sta sabüvu tu mpsuru, dvala sta klabüvu di mbüvu pasa.
It looks like paint on the horizon, or like a picture with the wrong colors.
Kishiri ki lu sta lasti, ba bubwa lya ki lu rdna stasta lasti.
It looks like a dream, and dad said that it is, sort of.
Tu krintsi nyi nyi ngwi hwu tuta, ba vi lya mungu fu ngwi rwa lasti tuta, ba kitüli lu klasti mu.
In our village we all sing together and he said that the people there all dream together, and the city is their dream.
Nana, kidwanwa ra suga gvu klasti mu, tali kidwa ri ra suga klasti da ra.
Maybe tomorrow night I’ll dream their dream, but tonight I’ll dream my own.
======
I may continue the journal at some point! I have some ideas of what might happen when the father and child arrive in the city, and what happens after, but I may also choose a different format to present those events! I’ve always enjoyed epistolary storytelling, so it was fun to try it out!

Damages to Physical Structures Estimated at $18.5 billion as of end January
WASHINGTON, April 2, 2024 – The cost of damage to critical infrastructure in Gaza is estimated at around $18.5 billion according to a new report released today by the World Bank and the United Nations, with financial support of the European Union. That is equivalent to 97% of the combined GDP of the West Bank and Gaza in 2022. The Interim Damage Assessment report used remote data collection sources to measure damage to physical infrastructure in critical sectors incurred between October 2023 and end of January 2024. The report finds that damage to structures affects every sector of the economy. Housing accounts for 72% of the costs. Public service infrastructure such as water, health and education account for 19%, and damages to commercial and industrial buildings account for 9%. For several sectors, the rate of damage appears to be leveling off as few assets remain intact. An estimated 26 million tons of debris and rubble have been left in the wake of the destruction, an amount that is estimated to take years to remove.
The report also looks at the impact on the people of Gaza. More than half the population of Gaza is on the brink of famine and the entire population is experiencing acute food insecurity and malnutrition. Over a million people are without homes and 75% of the population is displaced. Catastrophic cumulative impacts on physical and mental health have hit women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities the hardest, with the youngest children anticipated to be facing life-long consequences to their development.
With 84% of health facilities damaged or destroyed, and a lack of electricity and water to operate remaining facilities, the population has minimal access to health care, medicine, or life-saving treatments. The water and sanitation system has nearly collapsed, delivering less than 5% of its previous output, with people dependent on limited water rations for survival. The education system has collapsed, with 100% of children out of school.
The report also points to the impact on power networks as well as solar generated systems and the almost total power blackout since the first week of the conflict. With 92% of primary roads destroyed or damaged and the communications infrastructure seriously impaired, the delivery of basic humanitarian aid to people has become very difficult.
The Interim Damage Assessment Note identifies key actions for early recovery efforts, starting with an increase in humanitarian assistance, food aid and food production; the provision of shelter and rapid, cost-effective, and scalable housing solutions for displaced people; and the resumption of essential services.
About the Gaza Interim Damage Assessment Report The Gaza Interim Damage Assessment report draws on remote data collection sources and analytics to provide a preliminary estimate of damages to physical structures in Gaza from the conflict in accordance with the Rapid Damage & Needs Assessment (RDNA) methodology. RDNAs follow a globally recognized methodology that has been applied in multiple post-disaster and post-conflict settings. A comprehensive RDNA that assesses economic and social losses, as well as financing needs for recovery and reconstruction, will be completed as soon as the situation allows. The cost of damages, losses and needs estimated through a comprehensive RDNA is expected to be significantly higher than that of an Interim Damage Assessment.

The Order of Bradán Feasa (OBF)
Unit One of an RDNA Druid training program is finally in its first draft! I started writing this in 2020, and wrote a majority of it (114 pages) that year because I wanted to have created something before the feared perception of probably contracting Covid and dying therefrom. Then once I was vaccinated, I got complacent and set the draft aside, coming back to it perhaps once a month, re-reading and revising, not really adding any new content.
In an attempt to push forward with my list of proposed topics, I started to realize I was not qualified to create content for many of them, and that I needed to do a lot more reading and learning for my own sake before continuing. Thus 2021, 2022, and much of 2023 were dedicated to reading my stack of purchased but unread books, annotating, highlighting, and cross-referencing for veracity.
I still have a lot of reading and learning ahead of me, but much of that will align with Unit Three, which hasn't been started yet. Unit Two has actually been in a draft form since 2017, and there will be an exam to go with it. This will probably be the first modern Druid training program with an exam, and it will require a 90% score or higher to pass.
What is the OBF?
The Order of Bradán Feasa is a non-clerical side order made for the Reformed Druids of North America. The name means the "Salmon of Knowledge" in Irish Gaelic, and is a reference to the myth of Finn McCool gaining all the world's knowledge when he burns himself while cooking the salmon. Any person who completes Units One and Two will be inducted to OBF and given a digital certificate indicating completion of said training program. Units One and Two would be considered sufficient training for in-person candidates to be invited to Second Order initiation in the RDNA. The optional Unit Three is the RDNA Clergy Prep Course and Grove Governance Guide (GGG), and would be considered prerequisite to ordination to the Third Order: the RDNA priesthood, in addition to existing customary requirements such as the supervised All-Night Vigil.
Completing the First Draft
While some people write novels during November for N.A.N.O.M.I.R.O. or whatever, I was suddenly inspired to get Unit One done. Over the month of November I wrote 55 new pages and revised existing content again. No, that's no novel, but writing something of (hopefully) academic quality with APA citations is a bit more meticulous, especially with this being my first "college level" type of project in about 16 years.
Members of Oakdale Grove are in the process of reviewing and annotating the first draft already. I find it easier to spot needed revisions or typos when something is in print, plus I love writing directly on drafts with an ink pen because I'm an older millennial (roars in dinosaur, lol). And I get to review and mark it up for editing with a bit of a Dark Academia aesthetic. I'm a bit shocked that Unit 1 is 169 pages, and likely to grow. We've already identified some sections that don't exist yet that need to be here. Unit 2 is much smaller. I expect Unit 3 to be smaller, as well.
The goal is for Unit 1 to go live before Beltane 2024, for Unit 2 to go live by the Autumnal Equinox of 2024, and for Unit 3 to go live by the end of 2024. That last one has the greatest uncertainty though, because I still have two important books to read, and possibly more that I haven't found yet.

Use the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connector and the 3.5mm headphone jack to connect to external displays, controllers, or peripherals.
Expandable  Storage
A microSD card can be used to increase the ROG ALLY’s  storage capacity.

If you want to play high-performance games while on the road, the ROG ALLY is a great option. Whether you’re searching for an efficient way to play your favourite indie games or a potent handheld device for AAA titles, the ROG ALLY offers an alluring blend of mobility, performance, and immersive features.
The ASUS ROG Ally X is not just a straightforward update with a single or double the specs. In order to incorporate as many of the user’s suggestions as possible into the hardware build of this device, ROG even went so far as to entirely restructure the internals to accommodate all of the upgrades you requested from ROG Ally. This is a comparison between the ROG Ally X and the original Ally.
Upgrades for ROG Ally X
The ASUS ROG Ally X, first and foremost, offers notable specifications improvements, beginning with a larger battery. With its 80Wh battery, the ROG Ally X can play for longer periods of time in handheld mode than ever before, all without the need to recharge in the middle of a session. Furthermore, a compatible Type-C charger, like as their new ROG 140W GaN Charger, is the way to go if you want to charge that large battery even faster. The ASUS ROG Ally X now supports chargers up to 100W.
The 1TB of  storage and 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM in the ASUS ROG Ally X continue the ROG Ally enhancements, giving you more space for your games and quicker memory to dedicate to the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor’s visuals.
However, there are other plans besides spec increases. Almost everything has been modified in some manner, even the chassis, which now boasts rounded grips for far greater ergonomic comfort. The ASUS ROG Ally X feels perfect in your hands and will control better than ever with to upgraded D-Pad and stronger, more resilient joysticks. The back macro buttons have been resized to lessen inadvertent presses, and the face buttons are slightly more tactile than on the original Ally.
Additionally, ROG included a second USB Type-C connector that supports Thunderbolt devices and can operate at USB 4 speeds. This port is ideal for connecting an external GPU or other accessories. In order to keep the internal components and touch screen cooler than before, the new cooling system offers additional ventilation and uses dual 77-blade fans, an increase from the original Ally’s 47-bade fans. The speakers have also been updated, including larger chambers for a deeper, louder sound.
Unrestrained Power
Unmatched Performance
The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme  Processor, which powers the ASUS ROG Ally X, ensures fluid gameplay for demanding games.
Graphics Boost
Never skimp on style or quality. Stunning graphics are produced by the inbuilt AMD Radeon RDNA 3 GPU, so you can enjoy your favourite games in all their glory.
Memory Upgrade
Increasing memory to 24GB LPDDR5 makes it possible to multitask and guarantees a smooth gaming experience.
For hardcore gamers, the ASUS ROG Ally X is the best portable gaming companion. Its outstanding performance, long-lasting battery, and elegant design enable you to conquer the competition and take your favourite games with you wherever you go. The ASUS ROG Ally X is a compelling option whether you’re an experienced gamer on the road or searching for a strong and portable entry point into the world of premium mobile gaming.

ROG Xbox Ally vs. ROG Xbox Ally X: Comparando os dois consoles ASUS
Por Vinicius Torres Oliveira
Tumblr media

Lexember 6: Kingwandi
Today’s word is kingwandi [kiŋ.wän.di], meaning “a/the farm,” or “farming/agriculture” more generally. It’s the nominalization of ngwandi “to farm” or “to grow (plants),” related to the verb ngümi [ŋy.mi] “to grow,” “to spread,” “to scatter.” The proto-Valya word for “spread” or “scatter” was *ŋuami, which became ngümi, while the causative form *ŋuamidi was what became ngwandi. See day 4’s post for more examples of that causative suffix wreaking havoc on other root words.
Another term for farm that is sometimes used (especially to disambiguate from the more general sense of “agriculture”) is laga ngwandi, lit. “farming place.”
Like with day 2’s word klatanu, the plural forms of kingwandi are formed by removing the ki- prefix (which is inherently singular) before adding one of the other prefixes va- (dual), li- (plural indefinite), and mü- (plural definite).
It’s not clear which sense of the word ngümi gave rise to the meaning of “farming.” It could be to do with scattering/sowing seeds, or with causing plants to grow. It could also be the fact that farming involves both of these senses that gave rise to the association. As with some of the other causative-marked verbs, ngwandi is now basically a separate word from ngümi. Modern Valya has a different way of making causative verbs, so if you wanted to say “The cat made the birds scatter” it’d be Pmüru su mütyi ngümi* rather than anything involving ngwandi, which now pretty much only refers to farming.
Lbmu bingümi lingu küldi mu tu dzu. Tu lingwandi lilmbu lingu rdna. [l̩.ˈbmu.bi.ŋy.ˈmi.li.ˌŋu.kyl.ˈdi.mu.tu.ˈdzu | tu.liŋ.wän.ˈdi.lil.ˈbmu.li.ˌŋu‿r.dnä] To grow garlic, you bury garlic. People do that on garlic farms.
Tumblr media
*Due to the double meaning of ngümi, this could also mean “The cat made the birds grow”!

ASRock Launches DeskMini & DeskMeet X600 PCs
Tumblr media
The DeskMini & DeskMeet X600 PCs from ASRock, which are compatible with AMD Ryzen 8000G Desktop APUs, have finally been released.
Ready AMD Ryzen 8000G APU ASRock DeskMini and DeskMeet X600 Computers Featuring X600 Motherboards Released
Since Computex last year, we have been waiting to see the ASRock DeskMeet & DeskMini X600 series in action, and now that time is almost here. The company has revealed the two PCs that, depending on your preference, will come with AMD’s Ryzen 8000G APUs or the standard Ryzen 7000 CPUs. In terms of power and cooling capacity, these Mini PCs start with the 65W series.
What can we anticipate from the updated lineup? The newest X600 PCH-less motherboards, which are intended to make use of the onboard CPU I/O capabilities to power the connectivity needs such as USB, PCIe, memory, etc., will be available in the ASRock DeskMeet and DeskMini X600 series. The AMD Ryzen 7000 Embedded CPU lineup and the X600 PCH activator can be used to accomplish this. The boards will be available in mATX and Mini-ITX configurations, featuring the AMD AM5 socket and supporting up to four DDR5 slots for a maximum capacity of 256 GB. The boards will also support M.2 Gen5 SSDs, but PCIe 4.0 is the maximum discrete graphics capability available.
If there is enough room inside the chassis, you can still use these to power up an NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card. However, you would need to retrofit the PC with your own SFX power supply because the 500W ATX unit that comes with these PCs shouldn’t be sufficient for that use. This is why there are versions of these that are pre-equipped and barebones. Additional features include two SATA ports and support for 2.5 GbE LAN, providing you with enough I/O for standard office and gaming tasks.
Among the many exciting features of the DeskMeet X600 series are four DDR5 memory modules up to 256GB, PCIe 5.0 technology for M.2 SSD, and Dragon 2.5G Ethernet. Additionally, the 500W ATX Power supply’s fan has been tuned for better and more efficient thermal performance. The DeskMeet X600 series is the ideal option for constructing a potent but reasonably priced content creation and AI system because it supports PCIe 4.0 graphics cards.
The first AMD AM5 Mini STX Platform in the world is the DeskMini X600 series. It offers two DDR5 SO-DIMMs and an AMD AM5 65W CPU, providing exceptional processing and graphics performance. For maximum expandability and functionality in a small package, the DeskMini X600 series includes two SATA ports, two M.2 slots with blazing M.2 Gen5 SSD, super-fast 2.5G LAN, and three video outputs.
The DeskMeet and DeskMini X600 series benefit greatly from support for AMD Ryzen 8000G APUs because you can use the integrated RDNA 3 GPU, which is still more than capable of handling productivity and content creation tasks, instead of worrying about discrete graphics cards. The final costs of these PCs have not yet been disclosed by ASRock.
