Thoughts on Chromokopia?
IT'S SO. PEAK. listened to it w/ my friends as soon as it came out, enjoyed it from start to finish🙏🙏
my top 3 are def Hey Jane, Rah Tah Tah and Judge Judy (but could change). Hey Jane just gets me good, it's gonna be stuck in my head for a while. Balloon was like the comedic relief in the album it's such a. circus-y song. but i love that about it. also the transition from Rah Tah Tah to Noid is crazy??!?!?! but all the transitions in general are uufgh🤤
Hey Jane, Tomorrow, and Like Him make me sad🙁 "I'm feelin' the resentment any time you get near me" SHUT UPPPP🙁🙁 and tomorrow had me tearing up just from the snippet😭😭 like yeah i'm afraid of growing up and things changing!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
honestly there's a lot of different things going on in this album, but it's all so good. Sticky and Like Him are two completely different ends of the spectrum. even i'm struggling making a ranking because i liked every song, 100% gonna do something with noid if i ever get the motivation. the DOGTOOTH reference in Judge Judy was like my sleeper agent activation phrase
also my friend said she was scared of the things i was gonna make with this album (everyone knows i loooove angst)😭

i listened to more current albums this year than i ever have before so i wanna rank them
8. brat remix album - charli xcx
not really much to say about this. its not like i was excited for it but its impressive that not one of them is even really listenable. charli has a knack for picking the worst features imaginable every single time
favorite tracks: :/
7. sophie - sophie
it feels unfair ranking this against all the other ones bcus of the circumstances surrounding its release and im glad the tracks are out in the world but unfortunately none of them really stood out to me. sorry sophie you will always be the queen
favorite tracks: reason why, live in my truth
6. brat - charli xcx
im maybe overly critical of brat because of its reputation but it has a couple songs i really like and a couple i really dont and mostly a bunch that i dont really care about because this album is way too long. overall i guess i like it but it feels half baked in a way that 2 bonus versions couldnt fix. best thing about this album is that it introduced me to her better albums
favorite tracks: sympathy is a knife, everything is romantic, 365, spring breakers
5. imaginal disk - magdalena bay
this album kind of oversells itself with a really incredible first track before settling into something much less interesting but still very listenable. its stretched a little too thin over too many tracks but theres not really any that id skip. just a good album with a couple of great songs
favorite tracks: she looked like me, fear sex, cry for me, the ballad of matt and mica
4. the book of phytoelectron - susumu hirasawa
his instrumentation is as wonderful as ever and i do really like the album but i selfishly wish it was a regular album instead of a guitar album because i think he has like the best singing voice ever. but there were some tracks that reminded me of his old prog rock band that i really like so that was a nice little treat for me
favorite tracks: the history of omnificence in memory grass, area of red flowers on the snowy mountain range, the valley where the blue flowers on expedition take root in the light (damn), pollination charge: vines that go back to the future, remember it will come
3. i lay down my life for you - jpegmafia
seriously awesome production throughout even if the last couple tracks are sorta underwhelming. i know some people dont like this as much as his other albums and im not Super familiar with his other ones but i think this ones my favorite that ive heard. i have kind of a love/hate relationship with sampling but hes uses them in a way i love
favorite tracks: sin miedo, be right there, its dark and hell is hot
2. mahogakko - hakushi hasegawa
honestly im probably putting this too high theres a lot of dead space between the really good tracks but those tracks are like mind expanding and definitely contributed to me expanding my musical horizons this year. one of the most maximalist albums ive ever heard but still very listenable. the contrast between the off the walls instrumentation and their high soft singing voice really works for me
favorite tracks: departed, gone, mouth flash, kyofunohoshi
chromakopia - tyler the creator
kind of a surprise favorite for me ive never listened to a tyler album before and its definitely less ambitious than some of the others on here but i really enjoyed it. a couple of kind of cringey tracks but overall extremely fun and energetic while also being very heartfelt and touching. i will definitely be exploring more of his discography. i also like that sticky sounds exactly like a lisa the painful song
favorite tracks: st chroma, rah tah tah, i killed you, tomorrow, like him

a snapshot in time of my CALM orchestral arrangement
so I just discovered that this is a thing you can do on tumblr and i've been debating putting it up here (i'm not even sure it's legal) but at this point, to me it's worth the (very slim) lawsuit risk to show you guys the inspo behind making this blog. for @bluewrite who i've been meaning to email this to for ages but never got there. for @tleeaves who i think got a slightly older version as did @ghost-of-you but this is also for all of you who've heard me rattling about music things, for people i've gotten into 5sos by talking about this project such as @thevagabondexpress (thank you for drawing the U2 link).
anyway, as you probably know i'm a classical violist. i know my instrument and i know a fair amount of music theory and i know how to play the keyboard/piano as well and at the start of this project i knew very little about building orchestral scores or anything about wind instruments at all. i'd written arrangements and original pieces before but only for strings-only orchestras, and though i'm alright at pulling out instrumentation from songs my experience is largely in the more classic 2000s pop/rock/worship with very minimal synth activity and max 3 part harmonies. to say this was a challenge is an understatement.
it's also not finished yet. i've gone back and forth on this getting feedback from a bunch of people, much of which i didn't understand and wasn't ready to implement. i've also found ashton and calum's videos explaining these songs in more detail and the acoustic version of teeth and best years with the actual chords of the songs and now, differently to the week tfofu came out but similar, i'm on it again, noticing things. noticing musical trends. most of this was done by pure sound intuition and a handful of piano scores arranged by @/keudae on youtube i bought and played to get a feel of the songs. I feel really stoked to have picked up on the whole lover of mine setting us up for lonely heart and being a bit like ghost of you and some of the themes within the album!
but there is a lot i didn't pick up on. especially in the last movement i don't truly feel like i did any of those songs justice. nor lonely heart. and there is a stark difference between the quality of the songs that were played at the RAH and the ones that i only had a studio version to work off (my strings background comes out here). i've also looked at all the 22 individual parts and realised, hey, i want to be in the 5sos spirit and make every single one of these fun to play and right now the only one that is is the cello which carries luke's main melody line but it's also kinda working too hard.
and that's the thing i know, probably apart from that one keychange into lonely heart from ghost of you, this for the most part sounds good and i want to share it here before i rejig it too much, make it too much more orchestral, so we can remember it and see it evolve. because i have a bunch of juno and guitar and percussion and harmony parts i haven't put in. general song vibes. shake up the choruses and make them a variation on themselves each time. maintain the atmosphere it's got but add more layers to it, be more true to the original songs. make something i would be proud to show 5sos if the opportunity ever arose, something that would actually astonish them and I think I can. because their musicality in this album is astounding, and something i haven't seen in heaps of other artists, and i want to recognise that and draw it out in something that can do it justice like an orchestra.

Chromakopia Album Review
1. St. Chroma
This is a kick-ass opener! I loved the teaser for this song and album and this maybe on the same level as Igor’s Theme. Musically, this is a banger way of opening the album. Lyric-wise, it’s a perfect way to introduce the meaning and story of the album. The whispering rap of this song is absolutely masterful. Literally as great as Igor’s Theme. No joke. 11/10.
2. Rah Tah Tah
This one goes super hard and I love it. The chorus is a bit repetitive, but it’s still really good and fun. But the rapping only gets better throughout the whole album. 9/10.
3. Noid
While not having the same impact that EARFQUAKE had as a lead single, I still loved it. The first half was intense and amazing. The second half being the half I ended up loving more. Despite my love for this song, It is the most easy Tyler song to understand the meaning. Also, I absolutely adore the sample in this song. 10/10.
4. Darling, I
Omg! This song is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. Not just because of the instrumental and Teezo, but the message as well. It’s a simple but relatable one. But Teezo is absolutely incredible on this song, I love it! 11/10.
5. Hey Jane
This is definitely isn’t a song to come back to for the beat. But it’s what it’s about. I love the story of this song way more than Wilshire. I’m glad and upset about something tho. I’m glad I don’t have to worry about having an unexpected child because I’m male and gay. But I also wish I could experience my future child being birthed. I don’t know what it’s like to see my child being born, but I have an idea of what that feeling of your child being born into the world. I love this song. Maybe not the most replay-able song on the album, but it’s definitely not a skip. 10/10.
6. I Killed You
The title of the song being after Hey Jane is crazy and criminal 💀. At first, I didn’t really like this song. But it’s definitely grown on me. Not as great as some of the other songs, but not a skip. The deep meanings of the song are really well done. Yeah. That’s all I really have to say. I like the song, and it’s not a skip. 8/10.
7. Judge Judy
You think Childish Gambino was done dirty, wait until Baby Keem. I really like this song. But I want to “love” it tho. I just wish Childish Gambino was more than some background vocals. But other than that, I like this song a lot. But not as much as this next one. 8/10.
8. Sticky
I hate how much hate this song got at first and even now. But DAMN! This shit is so goddamn fucking fire! How can anyone hate this song? Sexyy isn’t even that bad. I think she’s fun on it. The beat drop with GloRilla. Lil Wayne?!?!?! This song is so fucking fire, you don’t even know. All three on one song is absolutely insane! Fuck it. 11/10. I could give it 12/10, but there’s a song later on that’s somehow perfect. 11/10.
9. Take Your Mask Off
This is another incredible song with multiple of the verses talking about different people. Telling them to take their mask off. With the last verse, Tyler is rapping about himself and I love it. It’s one of my favs from the album. This whole album is amazing! Maybe not as perfect as Igor, but it’s still amazing either way. 10/10.
10. Tomorrow
I need an extended version of this song immediately. It’s too short yet perfectly fine. At first, I didn’t like that the double song tradition Tyler has always done throughout his albums being thrown out the window for a single song track. But I don’t care about that after hearing this. I nearly cried here too. 10/10.
11. Thought I Was Dead
HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT?!?!?!??! This is perfect. I don’t care. I think this is perfect. It’s like every song from CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST put into one song and added a Chromakopia filter to it. It’s one of my favourite modern Tyler rap songs of the year. ScHoolboy Q is absolutely perfect in this. Beyond Playboy Carti. That’s right. I said it. Sue me if you don’t like my opinion. It’s perfect all the way through the whole song. 12/10. Sue me.
12. Like Him
Fuck… Tyler… I…I’m speechless… this feels illegal. Like I’m trespassing onto a private conversation… 12/10. The beat, the lyrics, Tyler, Bonita, Lola Young, everything. I love this song so much. 12/10.
13. Balloon
I was so shocked that this was in between two of the most serious tracks of the album. But I love it. I love Doechii. She gets to have fun on this one. I really gotta listen to her music. 9/10.
14. I Hope You Find Your Way Home
Such an interesting and poler opposite song compared to St. Chroma. But it’s such an appropriate way to close out the album. When Bonita is crying, I feel so happy for her and Tyler. I hope to have that same experience with my mother in the future. This whole album was amazing to listen to over and over. 10/10.
This is Tyler’s most personal album and I love that for him. He has never been this personal before and I think he needed it. I love this album so much. Despite it not being a perfect album like everyone hoped it would be and not being perfect, I still love this album and will always listen to it regardless. So I give this album… a 10/10. Just for “Thought I Was Dead”

This week I listened to Chromakopia
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5 out of 5 stars)
I liked this album a LOT and I know that I am not the first one to say this even in the slightest. I would not be shocked if this ends up being one of the highest critically rated albums this year.
For once I am actually listening to a popular album when it came out and that's cool! I had a great time with this album and I could not recommend it more if you haven't heard it yet.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Darling, I (feat. Teezo Touchdown)" is probably just one of the best songs I have heard in a really long time. It blends a beautiful melody and I like the lyricism a lot. It is such a beautifully human song and he acknowledges that with "I'm only human, if it ain't work...". I love the little bits of where he feels love compared to actual relationships, talking, about wealth and music. I think the line about how music fulfills you is just so beautiful and I love it. I love the layers of vocals, I think it it very characteristic of Tyler's music and it's amazing every time. I love this song so much.
"Hey Jane" I would pick this song off of this album for the best storytelling. I love love love that this song has the first section from Tyler's point of view and then it switches to "Jane's" point of view. I think it is a very cleverly written song. I don't think that the beat or anything is particularly of note but it's a great song and I'm a fan.
"Sticky (feat. GloRilla, Sexyy Red & Lil Wayne)" first off, the whistling is constantly stuck in my head. The human voice is an amazing instrument because everyone knows it and you can get things like that stuck in listener's heads very easily. This is very much the sillier side of Tyler's music and I appreciated it a lot that it is halfway through the album. I always like it when there are lots of people on a song. I love music being collaborative. I love that this song has drum and bugle on it, I love real instruments!!!
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Rah Tah Tah" This song is very goofy and very catchy and very hype and just all around a great vibe right off the bat for this album. I LOVE how it goes straight into "Noid" I always love it when albums do that.
"Take Your Mask Off" (feat. Daniel Caesar & Latoiya Williams)" This song just has a genuinely great message and I love it. It's super catchy and all around a great vibe.

ALBUM REVIEW: CHROMAKOPIA
(I'm in no way a professional music critic btw- I'm just doing this for fun and a lot of these are my opinions)
Chromakopia is Tyler, the Creator's 8th Album, and to put it simply, it's pretty good. Like, that's the simplest answer I can give- it's pretty solid. I'm gonna actually go into more detail now though LMAO.
Things I liked about the album (this goes over things also not related to the music):
The marketing(?) was pretty good. It was straightforward, he wasn't doing any mysterious teasers or making the wait really long to build up hype and I think more artists should take from that.
The cinematography was fucking AMAZING?? HELLO?? The cinematography of ST. CHROMA was definitely interesting in terms of what it could mean. Some people think that the men marching in a line into the shipment box was meant to represent conformity and I think that's a really fascinating idea. My personal interpretation was that it represented the men before him following tradition and Tyler blowing the box up represented breaking tradition, and this kinda comes from the line in ST. CHROMA that says "Give a fuck about traditions, stop impressing the dead". NOID also really had some interesting cinematography- I think Ayo Edibri did a great job at representing the unhinged fan (Ayo Edibri ily), and I'm also starting to really love the trend of celebrities calling out the parasocial relationships that fans have with them and how terrified it makes them to really go out. I think he represented those fears really well with the cinematography.
I loved the contrast in between each song. How the album went from slow songs with big use of harmonies and synths and singing (very similar to his later albums) to rapping with a faster, more upbeat sound that reminds me of his earlier albums. It swapped between those sounds with every song which made the album fun to listen to. I also like how, despite the contrast in between songs, Tyler's sound was consistent. Tyler tends to have a consistent sound throughout his music, which is something I've noticed. Usually consistency in music tends to be an artist's biggest weakness, especially for mainstream pop music, but with him, it's one of his strengths because of his ability to make each song still sound unique but keep a similar sound.
I thought that the lines from Tyler's mom were interesting and funny (the "always wear a condom" one made me chuckle a bit), the lines draw you in and make you want to keep listening. Each line also gives away the theme of the song, so you get the gist of what's going on pretty early. The monologue in "Like him" kinda got me emotional, not gonna lie.
I LOVED THE FEATURES SO MUCH! I was pleasantly surprised with Sticky and the GloRilla, Lil Wayne, and Sexyy Red features. I went into it thinking "Oh, this may not be a strong song" given the reputation Sexyy Red has of "not being talented" (personally I think she's very over-hated), but I went out of it loving it, actually- Sticky is one of my favorities. She did really good on this feature, and so did Glo and Wayne. Also CHILDISH GAMBINO??? Yippee!! I figured a feature was in order, since he played with Tyler during Coachella. Also Doechii (I think that's how you spell it?) Had a feature and I really enjoyed it as well, Balloon was a good song and some of the lines were pretty funny, especially if you took them out of context (the queef one 💀)
Yeah the music in general was really good- you really can't go wrong with Tyler, the Creator to be honest. Even his worst albums have like, one or two solid bangers, so you can't really go wrong with it. The music was really good and pretty standard for a Tyler album. A few of my favorites were Like Him, Sticky, ST. CHROMA, and Thought I was Dead, and honorable mentions include Rah Tah Tah, Tomorrow, Darling, I (this one was actually my boyfriend's favorite), and Balloon.
Things I didn't like about the album:
The lack of Frank Ocea- okay but for real, I'm actually not upset about Frank Ocean not being featured. Frank lost a family member and I'd actually rather him not make music and instead take his time to come back, if he chooses to at all. Sorry, had to start off with a bit of a joke. if I'm gonna be honest, there wasn't anything I distinctly disliked about the album. All of it was really solid and standard. I came into it, not having any big expectation because I try not to like, hold artists to a standard when it comes to their art. Art doesn't need to have an underlying meaning. Sometimes it can be fun, it can be satirical, it doesn't need to have a story. I didn't come into Chromakopia having an expectation, therefore I think I enjoyed it a lot more than I would've if I expected it to be the next Igor or CMIYGL (though I'd argue now that it very much IS that).
SONG RANKING:
I can't ACTUALLY rank the songs ngl. I enjoyed every single song, there wasn't one I could particularly place at the bottom or the top- in fact, a lot of songs TIED in my head for how much I liked them. Each song had a different meaning, a different concept. Chromakopia is kinda like an experimental album and I have a tough time putting together a whole list. I thought about it for the whole four days, deciding what songs would go where, and I didn't get past number 5. Maybe that makes me a bad reviewer, I dunno.
OVERALL, I did enjoy Chromakopia a lot. I loved how contrasting each track was, all the emotions you could feel from it. It was energetic, it was emotional, it was freaky, and it was thought-provoking. I will be stuck on this album for the next 3 weeks.

Redacted ship songs?!?! 👀👀👀 LETSS GOOO @penncilkid
Sam/Darlin’
“This is a place where I don’t feel alone, this is a place where I feel at home.”
I’ve already mentioned Two by Sleeping At Last but this song, this song man. It’s probably my favourite song in all existence. It’s so beautifully conforming and mournful at the same time. It reminds me a lot of the inevitability of Sam outliving Darlin’ but celebrating the love and growth they’ve managed to gift each other. With Sam constantly referring to Darlin’ as being “like home” this song feels very fitting.
“Your hope dangling by a string, I’ll share in your suffering, to make you well, to make you well.”
I chose this song for very similar reasons to the previous one. It’s a bit more hopeful, upbeat (with a bit of a country vibe, it’s technically folk rock…) but Sam would 100% sing this to Darlin’!! Tell me I’m wrong 😤
Vincent/Lovely
“I look at you now and I want this forever, I might not deserve it, but there’s nothing better.”
“Feelings they come and they go, that they do, feelings they come and they go, not with you.”
This is a very pretty, very classy song about falling in love under stars. If that’s not Lovely and Vince, I don’t know what is.
Geordi/Cutie
“I don’t like to fight, I told you once, and here’s the twice.”
“I wanna kiss you, wanna hold you, wanna go in as a green light, but I’m a little over-complicating everything that feels right.”
The 22 Break and 22 Make albums by Oh Wonder go pretty hand in hand with each other and remind me a lot of the situation Geordi and Cutie are going through at the moment. 22 Break is a break up album (who would have guessed) but it highlights Geordi’s point of “trust has to work both ways”. The 22 Make album on the other hand makes me super excited for where their relationship might develop to. All I can think of when listening to this ablum is how we’re gonna get to listen to them fall in love with each other all over again, no telepathy, but as people talking!! God I love these two so much 😭😭
Elliott/Sunshine
“Nothing says I like you but not that way. Oh I know that it’s not hard, but I just can’t let down my guard, I’m not trying to say, that I love you, I just think that you’re cute.”
I imagine there was probably a bit of denial/mutual pining between these two before they got together. They’re definitely the type that turned down a lot of people like “We’re just friends 😅” but would secretly both wish that wasn’t the case. They also just deserve a happy, lovey dovey song!
Gavin/Freelancer
“I get messages from the stars, when you’re making love to me, I get messages from the stars, you must be from another galaxy.”
I feel like Freelancer enjoys this kinda music (my Freelancer anyways) and that this song reminds them of Gavin. The “you must be from another galaxy” is kinda funny considering he quite literally is.
“You lift my heart up, when the rest of me is down, you, you enchant me, even when you’re not around.”
Pretty self explanatory I think. A few of Disclosure’s songs are very intense and intimate (You & Me - Flume Remix, especially) it’s almost how I imagine Gavin feels feeding on pleasure. Not necessarily exclusive to just Freelancer but I’m not about to make another section.
Avior/Starlight
“Oh God I dread to know, that after everything, it’s only me who isn’t letting go. I saw you holding on, but for just how long? Oh, if you didn’t stay, I would wait anyway.”
Obviously from Avior’s pov. The pure dedication and hope that if he’s patient enough and holds out hope a little longer they can learn to love him again. The “if you didn’t stay, I would wait anyway” line hits so hard knowing they didn’t stay the first time. He waits cause that all he can do.
“Crack baby you don’t know what you want, but you know that you had it once, and you know that you want it back.”
Again, similar to the previous one. You know it’s good angst when Mitski’s recommended.
——————————
Anyways, gonna stop there cause this has already taken way too long to put together 😭 I had fun tho, I love sharing/assigning music to characters. (Also didn’t intentionally stick to canon ship, that’s just what I had more music recs for) Like always if you wanna join in, feel free!! :D

the fame monster (2009) - my commentary edition
this is so fun, we started doing album commentary with a mutual!! anyone who wants in can join and add their thoughts too <3
BAD ROMANCE - THEEEE SONG OF ALL TIME TBH. excuse me i will literally write an essay on this. first of all: this changed the trajectory of pop music at that time. it really did. i dont want any further comments on this.
second of all, i knowww this is probably the most popular gaga song and everyone has heard it so many times in their lives (especially on the radio in early 2010s lol) BUT! i want everyone to hear it again and again and again. because they just dont make songs like this anymore!!! the production valueeeee are u hearing this????? the vocals??? the lyrics??? the POWER absolute power of this song. oh my god.
also, rah rah bitch. gaga ooh lala even.
last of all, when she said i dont wanna be friends french and THEN started speaking french??? 😭☝ i FEEL that lady gaga
ALEJANDRO - okay this CHANGED ME as a person. im not even kidding. i watched the music video, i was like 10, and it awakened something in me.
this song was also such a hit, and to be honest, it is simply insane to me that we were listening to this on the radio. like?? are u hearing this BEAT??? with that intro?? the hook???? that buildup??? please. this is pop perfection right here.
DONT CALL MY NAME ROBERTO 😔
MONSTER - i love this one so much. that boy is a monster mo mo monster, so fucking true! one thing i really like about a lot of her music is that the songs are jams and sound really fun, but then when u listen to the lyrics, it gets really really sad. this is a good example of this. she does that a lot starting from this album especially
also that little just dance reference hehe queen of intertextuality and self referentiality (i will say this every time she references her own songs and she does that A LOT i realized lol)
SPEECHLESS - the best gaga ballad!!! TO ME!! it's soooo good. her voice is so captivating (vocal queen always foreverrrr). the lyrics are so 😭😭 the production and instrumentals!! pleaseeee
side note: interesting how her trash father inspired so many of her best works 🤔 when i listen to this song i lose myself in it every time and then i think: QUEEN how could u possibly write this about your dad and how it can be soooo good???
DANCE IN THE DARK - one of her most underrated songs!!! definitely!!! THAT BRIDGE!!!!! marilyn, judy, sylvia tell em how you feel girls 🗣🗣🗣
i love this one so much. sooo much. how do the kids say nowadays, she is really mothering in this one, okay?
ooh and did u know that there is a rina sawayama cover of this song?? i love that as well.
TELEPHONE - oh my godddd the way i would try to do the dance of this but never could 😭 it was too much for little me...
okay this one is absolutely ICONIQUE as one would say. the music video??? that's poetic cinema. they left us with "to be continued" for over a decade now lmao 😭 i wish we could see them together again pleaseeee
what can i say, it's a hit!! another song that no one could escape from in early 2010s lol she's quite the hit-maker isnt she :)
SO HAPPY I COULD DIE - what a layered song. first of all, the lyricism of this song (this album in general tbh) really transcends. the way this can be sexual, or it can be about addiction at the same time. i really dont have the brain power to write abt it in depth but i just love the lyrics of this one sooo much
"i am as vain as i allow" this is so gaga.
TEETH - 😳😳😳 okay... this one is one of her hottest songs imo what does it say abt me lmao
i LOVE this like that beat... and it has such a musical theater vibe to it, it's so so good. has some really fun vocal moments too <3 really what a closer to this incredible album!!
(BONUS SONG) RETRO, DANCE, FREAK -
okay this one is a bonus song (technically for "The Fame" album, but released with the international deluxe edition of "The Fame Monster". so im putting it here as a bonus song lol)
this one is soooo fun for me. i wish this was in the original tracklist of The Fame instead of Disco Heaven tbh. it's fun, it fits the energy and vibe of the album so well. it would be a better closer imo :<
general comments - this album is POP PERFECTION in the literal sense im not even kidding. it's her shortest, but probably the most impactful work.
in terms of production, it has such a CLARITY that is really hard to see in many albums. the art direction and music meets the production perfectly. The Fame is an iconic album, sure. but The Fame Monster really takes a huge step ahead from that if you ask me. which says a LOT about the quality of this album
i want to say, the lyrics in this album is probably my favorite from her works. it just!!!! so good, so powerful!!! the dark side of fame may seem like an overdone concept, but she does it so well here
i would say this is her best album if i didnt know what will come later in her career lmao. it's just so good, so clean, so inspirational, i would just think "okay how will she top this cmon now"... but she does she really does that's really impressive on its own
ranking for now: the fame monster >> the fame
(the ranking may get Messy in the next album commentaries lmao but im just trying 🤷‍♂️)

I just came across your analyses of all the 5sos albums and can I just say: chefs kiss. amazing. from the way you approach them both musically and lyrically (are you a musician? you have a very good ear) to being able to tell who is singing which part of the harmony (when there’s more than 2 singing at once I have No Idea, and even when there’s just 2 I’m still a little hit and miss). so grateful you exist and did them!!! not only for my enjoyment purposes but also because of my crazy projects I’m about to tell you about just in case you’re interested
anyway, it started with the RAH version of teeth. I’m a classically trained violist, I’ve played in many orchestras, I looked and asked everywhere I could think of just to lay my hands on something like the score so I could maybe pull some musician friends together and play it. No avail. Then, sleep deprived and slightly manic and very unmotivated in the middle of writing my honours thesis I must’ve played that bass riff when messing around on my viola and was like ‘this isn’t even hard let me just open musescore’ and decided Luke’s voice best fit the cello and calum the viola and six hours later it was a whole orchestral piece with the riffs passing around the upper strings like the RAH version and also woodwind and brass instruments somehow and then the bass riff led me straight into thin white lies which quickly morphed into NITSW (and can I just say that bridge is the best thing ever when played by strings) and I was like, this is telling a story. That became the first movement of the concerto.
second movement had to start with the flutes playing the piano intro of lover of mine, then I borrowed ghost of you from youngblood and threw in lonely heart, all the ones in vaguely 3’s as far as timing goes went in, all satisfactorily longing (if mvmt 1 is Relationship Angst) ending on a reprise of ghost of you chorus a semitone up (I’m not even sure anymore tbh, it’s def less cohesive but pretty I think) and I tried to copy its RAH intro as an outro. By then I realised I wanted to make the third movement about self discovery that ended on red desert because the album is just SO SAD and it deserved a happy ending and I wanted to try fit as many songs from the album in as I could (no shame and kill my time didn’t fit thematically unfortunately and easier should’ve been in movement 1 but sonically it just didn’t go, at least not yet I’m open to attempting to incorporate any of those songs) so started with old me. I realised I could overlay it with best years. Weird choice I know but the chords and melody worked well enough (and I still don’t think best years has been brought to justice ngl). Then I overlaid wildflower with high which is surprisingly a combination that I love, and it worked music wise and I thought they offset each other alright?? I’m still not quite sure where I’m going with it yet. but then comes red desert and I did the RAH intro and the whole song with harmonies (does get repetitive and idk what to do with that yet) and it’s like. yay, I gave CALM a happy ending.
I guess what I’m asking is I want to do more of these for more of their albums or combination of them (like they’re genuinely so fascinating from a musical and storytelling lens I can’t get enough) and I’ve got some ideas but I want to hear if you have anything you can just hear coming after each other. like complete mess and red line or smth?? even moodswings and space between a rock and a hard place?? idk. just ideas. throw them all at me. I’ll do it and dedicate it to you
Okay, first, no, not a musician, it's just that my dad was a dj, so i grew up around a lot of sound equipment because he's very particular about sound quality and that totally developed my ear for that type of stuff and my interest for music is that much more intense because of it (i did teach myself how to play the guitar and i do sing, but, like, i don't have any real training) and I really appreciate you coming here to say these, because i have a lot of fun writing those. Also I saw your tags, don't know if you ever figured it out but the milf anthem is mrs all american lol
Second, I'm desperate to hear what you did with calm, from the description alone it feels like something impressive, I'm very interested to see how you overlayed high and wildflower because i can see it, but i can't really imagine how that would actually work sokaosksokas
And third, I actually have quite a few smaller combos i like to push together (i went through a mashup phase when i was learning how to play 5sos songs lol) but i usually go from lyrics and adjust the guitar to fit my voice, i have no idea how that could work for you, but one i always do is vapor -> lie to me -> why wont you love me -> bad omens (it used to be high at the end, but then they dropped bad omens and i liked the way that narratively bad omens closed the loop, you end up trapped in the relationship you know it's not working I like that a lot for this combo), i have a few weirder ones, that are mostly the ones that i never fully managed to make it work but i think they could, like moodswings into bleach, story of another us into close as strangers, i know you saw my post about rearranging 5sos5 to tell a story and for some reason i think you can overlay caramel and bad omens, and red line and you don't go to parties (this one i admitedlly don't really know, but i think the red line riff with the ydgtp riff could be something, just a feeling lol), there's the rhythm section mashup, tomorrow never dies -> babylon -> tears, that I think you can make something with the bass in all of them, for some reason vapor and me myself and i, talk fast -> not in the same way -> blender -> kill my time, this one i think its cool because of the 80s pop of the melodies and the progression of the story with the lyrics, lover of mine -> best years -> older -> ghost of you, again you have the narrative and i think the piano can work all of there to make this tragic love song. And this is everything i can think of right now, but i will probably think of more as soon as i hit post tho soaskookasas
But seriously, this sounds really cool, please let me know how it progresses <3

WE ARE THE TIGERS/WATT WEEK DAY 4
HAPPY WATT WEEK DAY 4!!!
Today’s prompt is: Pom poms up
Continuing with my contributions for the week, as this is a lyric from Shut Up and Cheer, I will give my song commentary and analysis of it.
The fact I have been in Eva’s place before actually (minus the people dying, but the drama, OH GOD. Yes, I can confirm even SWIM TEAM can have drama. And not the drama in the musical theater way)
•”In a room full of people who have clearly mad bad choices, I may be the stupidest one here”
•Now WOAH WOAH WOAH. There’s so much to say here.
•FIRST, I LOVE THIS LINE. What a BANGER opening line
•PRESTON MAX ALLEN KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING COMING UP WITH THIS OKAY?
•It says a LOT in one line
•effective ways to start a song: be Eva in WATT
•Also just Sydney Parra. That’s all.
•Finally, I just realized could this lyric still technically work if you swapped “people” and “choices”?
•“in a room full of choices who have clearly made bad people” idk 😂
•”Cause having heard the stories, and knowing all the drama” Eva my beloved come here I will give you all the hugs
•”I still said I’d join the murder squad this year” Omg an alternative title for WATT? “Murder Squad the Musical”
•and technically if we’re getting logical Riley is the main agent because Reese k wording Clark was an accident but yeah okay anyway
•”I swore that lightning won’t strike twice, and surely this is all under control” oh honey- YOU GOT A BIG STORM COMING
•”This school costs more than I can say, they straight up comped me 60k” HONEY THAT SHOULD’VE BEEN THE WARNING SIGN/FIRST RED FLAG
•”but also I’m afraid I sold my soul” Never would I have thought to comment here and make a connection to Faust but curse that one college course that made me read Faust- I have a feeling Eva would hate Goethe too
•”So I can say no this shit is insane” THE WAY SHE ADDS A BIT OF A GROWL ON “SHIT”
•”Or I can keep my cool and stay in my lane” ME when there was drama on my swim team and I was not living for it and just trying to live my own life
ARE WE READY FOR THE NEXT PART??
AH HERE IT COMES
AND PUT MY POM POMS UP, OH I RA RA RAH AND DISAPPEAR, SHUT UP AND CHEER
•“They won’t even know that I am here” In other situations I would say oof Eva deserves to shine for sure, I mean yeah she only gets like this song but yeah I understand she was the new girl so she only just got there but it makes sense to me and I’m glad Preston put in in the album because it gives us HER perspective like “do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head” also maybe it’s a good thing Eva was masking because imagine if Riley went after her next
•”I have worked so hard for so much less” OOOOOOOH TOO RELATABLE, RELATABLE LINE ONCE AGAIN
•”I think maybe every high school is a mess” Eva you couldn’t be more real in this song I swear
•”you want a little structure, you just want a smaller class size, and somehow you have ended up in hell” can also confirm
•”if everyone seems crazy maybe I’m the one who’s crazy” Eva is just so real
•also quick psa, on a musical side note, I LOVE THE PIANO MELODY/RYTHYM IN THIS SONG!!
•”and all of them are doing really well” girl you’re probably the most stable one here tbh
•”or see these goddamn girls won’t get in my way” I kind love how she sings this line, tbh part of me feels like she’s letting some inner Riley out
•“shut up and cheer and back awaaaaaAAAAAaaaAay” YES EVA SING
•”complicated god I know it, I’m afraid but I won’t show it” also a mood
•”I can pray that they’ll outgrow it” Well thank god most of them did (rip we’ll never know about Chess and Farrah if they lived tho)
•”take a chance and make it through the year” LOVE how the instrumental builds up through this section
•”get in the clear” I’m sensing the double meaning here
•”And say that life’s not fair, oh I’ve so been there” who hasn’t tbh
•“Shut up and cheer ready ok”
EVA MY BELOVED. My favorite real icon and to think it started from just delivering pizza. This whole song is just one giant mood. I love it.

Hellaaaaaauuuur, I'm in Taiwan, but I'm going home soon :/
So CBX, I'm glad they won, but I'm also confused about the whole thing, it's awkward af to be working with people you sued ajgghshgajaasgsdgsd also I wouldn't trust SM, but I hope everything improves and works out well. Baek said to trust him, so there's nothing we can say since we don't know all the details
Omfg, have you seen Shinee in Thom Browne, I can't believe Minho and Jinki are the ones serving skirts??? makes me even sadder Jinki won't be promoting. But heeeeey Shinee variety shows!!!
Baek ILY you came with a whole ass Powerpoint presentation on Ateez's lack of good photos <3333 I feel like I'm nitpicking sometimes, but I genuinely care about the pictures especially if I'm buying albums. I bought so many from artists I don't stan because of the photobooks. TXT for example, I bought two of their albums before I even got into them, because WOW same with NCT. And they don't even need to try that hard, like I said before: some of the pics members post on SNS are much better, wtf??? Very true on the settings + clothes combo, sometimes the colours are so off it makes the photos look even more lacklustre... they rely on members' looks, but they still edit them to the point of the boys looking strange :( Like https://twitter.com/shinestarnation/status/1669978356861874176?t=MOHn2peZLBCxzCiWmfTMAA&s=19 and https://twitter.com/hwalilac/status/1669972664046469123?t=6JuN7g_tRmtkZ2jJofzqLA&s=19 - he looks hot, but come on. This https://twitter.com/pshsource/status/1670647944469696512?t=7ewg9ktCAqqyvfKprFNCBg&s=19 is better, and the lil ponytail is cool, but again it's because HWA IS A MODEL
Now onto the album, yeah it's like Movement and I feel the same about it, except Outlaw doesn't have Cyberpunk <3 each song has cool parts, but they blend together too much. Can't even tell which one is my fave honestly, I still cannot distinguish all of them based on the verses. I haven't listened to the album a ton, because I didn't have time also the album is kinda an assualt on my senses 😭. Coming from me - noise music lover, lmao. Bouncy grew on me, it's catchy, I'd rather if Ateez gave me something else, but it's the only track that's different
Bestie my bff/flatmate met Yuta in Paris and hopefully she meets TY too, but FUCK PARIS!!! This video lowkey reminds me of our meeting, so fucking random https://twitter.com/yutpeu/status/1670738437585108993?s=20
Anyways, you're right Yuta is a great actor, the difference between that movie he did and his current drama is soooooo 😂😂😂 and the fact so many people don't know his voice and claim he can't sing, but he can do this https://youtube.com/shorts/YcuQlxS3hjA?feature=share4 !? 127 has a lot of singers and not enough singing lines, their line up never made sense to me. Like Jaehyun is a good singer with nice vocal tone, not a fucking rapper, STOP IT. I think they'd benefit from having another proper rapper instead of so many vocalists. 2 Baddies is questionable, but Yuta's "fill up the tank pour gasoline on me rah"??? Okay rockstar!
Speaking of Jamal Jeong, this https://twitter.com/jaehyunpetals/status/1669874106874073088?s=20 video is so fucking funny I've been laughing at it for days and not Troye pulling him also?! Have you seen the vid where Troye tells him he was born in South Africa and Jaehyun literally has his "if you're from Africa then why are you white" moment, I CANNOT
Hoooooold ooooon the challenges, first Taeyong x Felix, now Taeyong with Woo and Yunho. The universe knew I'd die if it was Hwa, lol
Can we talk about Hwa's room??? He did not dissapoint me, the only one so far who has a room with some personality, not just b&w hotel look (soz WooSan) or a literal man cave (Yunho). His room is gamer nerd aesthetic x high fashion girlie DID YOU SEE THE YSL STUFF???? ANTHONY VACARELLO WHERE IS HIS SHOW INVITE THEN. The Folklore vinyl made me laugh, I won't comment, but it's a crime his room is so small :///
BODYGUARD ANNIVERSARY SOON WTF?!?!
And wdym HWA AND SAN WENT TO DINNER WITH KAI AND WE WEREN'T THERE
Wow, I'm so normal... https://twitter.com/MAS_43ver/status/1670391008151109632?s=20
He is so great and amazing and spectacular https://twitter.com/shinestarnation/status/1670014890969292804?s=20 - DV 💖
hello!!

HELLOOOO LMFAOOO BACK TO BRITAIN 😭😭😭😭😭😭 i think this is like the first time sm backed off??? no bc some ppl are not able to read,,, im vv glad they have an agreement and now will change things on their contracts, not only theirs but potentially everyone at sm will now have a chance to change those contract terms now,,, cbx really became sm’s character development??? im also hoping they weren’t threatened into this,, but as long as baekhyun says it’s fine then it must be, he’s the lawyer i just hope he isn’t be scrutinized and singled out 😭😭😭 AT LEAST WE ARE GETTING THE COME BACK??? ALL THE PRODUCERS ARE SO EXCITED AND ITS MAKING ME SCREAM BC ANON THIS????
do u hear this (put the volume up rly loud) that baekhyun siren call oMG???? ANON ALL THE BEST OLD SM PRODUCERS ARE COMING BACK??? THAT SIREN CALL??? the way im gonna buy this album the minute they drop the photos omg anon u will not hear the end of me talking about their voices ALL THE SM HIT MAKERS BMWDJWK
Omfg, have you seen Shinee in Thom Browne, I can't believe Minho and Jinki are the ones serving skirts??? makes me even sadder Jinki won't be promoting. But heeeeey Shinee variety shows!!!

I DID AND IM SO PUMPED??) THE STYLING AND THE TEASER PHOTOS?? TAEMIN BACK TO SKUNK HAIR AND HIS FRECKLES??? OH LORD SM BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THAT ART,,, see it’s so simple but the depth?? the filter?? wowzie BUT YES SHINEE SHOWS!!! im also quite upset about that but i hope kibum does a ending fairy w onew’s face in it 🤲🏻🤲🏻
Baek ILY you came with a whole ass Powerpoint presentation on Ateez's lack of good photos <3333 I feel like I'm nitpicking sometimes, but I genuinely care about the pictures especially if I'm buying albums. NO BC I WAS SO FURIOUS I WANT BETTER PHOTOS 😭😭😭😭 right! like it really matters when a photobook is very pretty,, sometimes i don’t even like the songs but the photobook? im buying it. it’s like a magazine collection for me fbenjck nct’s resonance album was the definition of simple but it was so pretty to look at?? a whole magazine style,,, THE NCT SEOUL CITY ONE IS JUST TO BEAUTIFUL !!!! no bc they really do post better on social media,,, petition for booba to do their actual album’s photo books !! ur right, the clothes are like the same colour as the bland background which just fades them out plus the extra photoshop on their lips that DISAPPEAR???? idk if u saw but i was looking thru the deja vu san photos,,, i think they made his nose longer? i think it may just’ve been me but when i first saw it it’s all i could think off,, those photos with the wire have sO much potential like PUT SOME FILTERS LETS NOT MAKE IT BLAND, USE CYBER CORE LIKE ITS THE PERFECT TIME??? like zoom into some random part of their face,, like just show us art 😭😭
honestly that orange ones are so pretty, i wish they did something like that!! i made a another one that i wish was the aesthetic / theme for this comeback,,, cyber core ateez pls 😭😭
Tumblr media
Now onto the album, yeah it's like Movement and I feel the same about it, except Outlaw doesn't have Cyberpunk <3 each song has cool parts, but they blend together too much. each song does have some pretty good parts,, i also cannot distinguish between them.. they seem very cohesive to each other in a sense if u finish one song u don’t even know u finished it bc the next one correlates to the one u just finished,, ASSAULT TO MY SENSES FBWMDBWMBDWKBDKWHDWKHDKWJDKW LMFAOOOO bouncy grew on me too bc i be doing that dance challenge every second <3

RIGHT!! the movie it fit him so well, like his sharp features just make it even better ??? sm get him into movies??? NOOO LITERALLY LIKE ME TOO I FORGOT HOW HE EVEN SOUNDS LIKE BC THEY DONT EVEN GIVE HIM LINES,,, that’s the problem w nct like u guys have some of the best vocalists in the industry but the songs are too small or the lines are just not being given fbwndbsn RIGHT HE IS HE IS !!! HE SINGS SOOOO PRETTILY PLS LEAVE THE RAPPER TO MARK 😭😭😭 the rAH GOT ME FBANBDKS
Speaking of Jamal Jeong, this https://twitter.com/jaehyunpetals/status/1669874106874073088?s=20 video is so fucking funny I've been laughing at it for days and not Troye pulling him also?! the new sound is still probably gonna be my aoty just because of the effects it had on me (dark, sapping forces) but chromakopia is a close second. Love how ‘Tyler’ it sounds, like he’s REALLY come into his unique style. Genius samples, amazing features, really thoughtful topics that still have lyrics with a lot of humor to them. My standouts were sticky, rah tah tah, hey jane (fairly I favorited most of the album but that’s off the top of my head)

CHROMAKOPIA review
i made a review of tyler, the creator's new album because someone on twitter called me dumb for forming an opinion on it before i heard all of it so here it is:
st. chroma: 9 rah tah tah: 8 noid: 7 darling, i: 9 hey jane: 6 i killed you: 4 judge judy: 2 sticky: 1 take your mask off: 7 tomorrow: 8 thought i was dead: 2 like him: 5 balloon: 1 ihyfywh: 5
i really like the instrumentation for the most part but i've never been a fan of tyler's vocals. they're not bad, just not my style. i also think the transitions between tracks usually sucks balls and brings it down as an album, even when the tracks on their own are good
i found the features didn't get in the way of tyler's presence which is cool. i liked Darling, I quite a lot. that said, it's one of many on this album that go on too long for my liking
i often found myself relating to/resonating with the themes of the songs but not loving the way the themes are presented, which happened when i tried listening to DAMN. as well. Hey Jane had really intense stuff but i couldn't really get into the sound of it unfortunately
i can't say i resonated with I Killed You at all, musically or lyrically (though given i'm white there's definitely some disconnect with the discussion of heritage and oppression). it also transitions into Judge Judy SO badly oh my god
Judge Judy was another one where i was intrigued by the premise but did not enjoy the execution. the instrumentation was very, uh, light, and the tone of the rhymes were basic at best. also the kick drum has WAY too much compressor influence. i also hate when songs have moaning
Sticky opened bad despite transitioning well from Judge Judy. it also suffers from anaconda syndrome (stupid hard-ass drums that deafen me with some fuck-ass triangle shit going on)
Tomorrow opened really strong goddamn. Thought I Was Dead's opening horns sound like farts haha. and it ends with literally no transition?? lmao. Like Him was all over the place but based Lola Young feature.
overall: 7/10 adjusted for typical human understanding of out-of-ten scale: 5/10
i liked it enough. if this were a rating of songs only, and not as an album, the overall score might be a little higher
