街歩きの途中、コンビニに寄ろうとしたところ、赤い車が駐車場に入ってきた。オォ、日産スカイラインRSではないか。久しぶりに見かけたなぁ。今では走り去っていく姿を見かけることもほとんどなく、ここまでの至近距離で見たのは本当に久しぶりのことだ。数年前にはこの近辺でケンメリのスカイラインが走っているのも見かけたことがある。

スカイラインが好きなのはわかるが、それを所有して乗ってみたいというのは、もはや「好き」を超えて「愛」すら感じる。車から降りてきた男性は、マスクで分かりづらいがパッと見で30代、おそらくはその後半といった風貌だった。このスカイラインが販売されていた頃は、まだ子供だっただろうか。

赤と黒のツートーンのRSは、当時の鮮やかさがそのまま。30年以上経過していると思われるが、かなりきれいで整備されているように見える。ペイントし直しているのだろうか。ボディの両サイドには「4VALVE DOHC RS」と刻まれている。この強烈なまでの自己主張。市販車のボディにここまで目立つ文字を描くとは、当時も他に記憶がない。スカイラインの上級車種だけに、レース車両風のペインティングを狙ったのかもしれない。

GT-Rの名こそ冠せられなかったが、事実上のGT-R。6気筒エンジンではなかったため、「GT」を名乗ることができなかったと、後年、なにかの記事で読んだ記憶がある。

この時期は、排ガス規制が一通り進み、自動車が再びパワーを取り戻しつつある時期だった。そんな時代を象徴する名車の1台か。
